Meet the New Official Portrait of the Danish Royal Family
Holy WTF - They paid good krone for this?
When the Queen of Denmark opted to commission the first royal family portrait in almost 125 years, she turned to Thomas Kluge, a largely self-taught Danish portrait painter whose inspirations are said to include Rembrandt and Caravaggio. After four years of work, Kluge's finished painting is finally here: an inexplicably creepy portrait that reimagines the royal family as a clan of sadists, transvestites, and malevolent pigmen whose abominable ruttings have brought into the world a brood of Damien-like progeny.
Or perhaps he accurately captured the creepy-and-kooky-and-all-together-ooky scandi nature of the Glücksburg family. All I know is that Damien Prince Christian must be taken down before he attains his full powers. And that's not going to be an easy task:
But the prince will not easily be killed: he has splintered his soul between seven horcruxes, each of which has been hidden as a sort of Easter egg within Kluge's masterpiece. Can you find them all?
But all future bloodshed aside I am looking forward to the dramatic TV and movie series based on the painting.
Why the Democrats Used the Nuclear Option
One reason the filibuster persisted for so long is that it actually made the Senate as a whole more powerful. So why would the Democrats get rid of it now?
What's peculiar about the timing of the Democrats' decision is that it comes just when the partisan risk of abolishing the filibuster has been heightened. The abject failure of ObamaCare has made the prospect of a Republican Senate in 2015 and a Republican president in 2017 much likelier. Thus even from a purely partisan standpoint, rational Democrats would have been more cautious about invoking the nuclear option when they did than at just about any other time in the past five years.
But then over half of the Democratic members were only elected after 2008 and the 'Elizabeth Warren' senators are more radical and have no memory of ever being in the minority.
Harry Reid's Nuclear Option Was a Good Thing
The move shows how foolish Republicans like John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Orrin Hatch were to worry that if they broke the filibuster, Democrats would then do it too. Democrats did it anyway. The only way to deter bloody-minded Democratic behavior is to treat Democrats as they treat Republicans. Democrats sicced special prosecutors on GOP Presidents for years, but they gave up the independent-counsel statute only after Ken Starr investigated Bill Clinton....The silver lining is that the end of the nominee filibuster will work for conservatives too. The next time they hold the Senate and White House, Republicans should employ the same weapon. Democrats are pretending that they are only breaking the filibuster for lower-court nominees, not for the Supreme Court. They can dream on.
The next GOP President should line up Federalist Society alumni for judicial nominations like planes waiting to take off at O'Hare International Airport. Imagine two or three more Clarence Thomases on the High Court confirmed with 51 Senate votes. Planned Parenthood can send its regrets to Harry Reid.
As Patterico points out ObamaCare can now be repealed by 51 votes in the Senate. As long as the GOP has the 51 votes - and the will to cast them. So let's get more 'Ted Cruz' Senators and fewer Gang of Whatever.
"Nuclear Option" Is About Packing Courts With Judges Who'll Uphold ObamaCare Regs."
"The media shielded the president from every criticism - until he betrayed a liberal cause,"
Millennials in the Workplace Training Video
The faults of the Millennials are hardly unique to their generation but as a group they do seem to have gotten through 20+ years of parental and school training without having had them corrected. As Adam Carolla complains they seem to confuse effort with actual results and expect to be rewarded for the former.
China Declares 'Air Defense Zone' over Japanese Senkaku Islands
And issued the following rules:
First, aircraft flying in the East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone must abide by these rules.
Second, aircraft flying in the East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone must provide the following means of identification:
1. Flight plan identification. Aircraft flying in the East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone should report the flight plans to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China or the Civil Aviation Administration of China.
2. Radio identification. Aircraft flying in the East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone must maintain the two-way radio communications, and respond in a timely and accurate manner to the identification inquiries from the administrative organ of the East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone or the unit authorized by the organ.
3. Transponder identification. Aircraft flying in the East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone, if equipped with the secondary radar transponder, should keep the transponder working throughout the entire course.
4. Logo identification. Aircraft flying in the East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone must clearly mark their nationalities and the logo of their registration identification in accordance with related international treaties.
Third, aircraft flying in the East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone should follow the instructions of the administrative organ of the East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone or the unit authorized by the organ. China's armed forces will adopt defensive emergency measures to respond to aircraft that do not cooperate in the identification or refuse to follow the instructions.
Fourth, the Ministry of National Defense of the People's Republic of China is the administrative organ of the East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone.
Fifth, the Ministry of National Defense of the People's Republic of China is responsible for the explanation of these rules.
Sixth, these rules will come into force at 10 a.m. November 23, 2013.
Both Japan and the US have already announced that they will ignore it. What could possibly go wrong?
None Dare Call It Redistribution
Rebecca M. Blank was a top candidate in 2011 to lead President Obama's Council of Economic Advisers, but then the White House turned up something politically dangerous."A commitment to economic justice necessarily implies a commitment to the redistribution of economic resources, so that the poor and the dispossessed are more fully included in the economic system," Ms. Blank, a noted poverty researcher, wrote in 1992. With advisers wary of airing those views in a nomination fight, Mr. Obama passed over Ms. Blank, then a top Commerce Department official and now the chancellor of the University of Wisconsin. Instead he chose Alan Krueger, a Princeton economist.
"Redistribution is a loaded word that conjures up all sorts of unfairness in people's minds," said William M. Daley, who was Mr. Obama's chief of staff at the time. Republicans wield it "as a hammer" against Democrats, he said, adding, "It's a word that, in the political world, you just don't use."
Because redistribution implies theft from someone else. And eventually that someone will be you.
The War on Women Is...Mostly a Same-Sex Battle
They stared at her, looked her up and down, rolled their eyes and sometimes showed outright anger. One asked her in disgust, "What the [expletive] is that?"Most of the aggression, though, happened after she left the room. . . . "Women are indeed very capable of aggressing against others, especially women they perceive as rivals," said Dr. Vaillancourt, now a psychologist at the University of Ottawa. "The research also shows that suppression of female sexuality is by women, not necessarily by men."
Stigmatizing female promiscuity - a.k.a. slut-shaming - has often been blamed on men, who have a Darwinian incentive to discourage their spouses from straying. But they also have a Darwinian incentive to encourage other women to be promiscuous. Dr. Vaillancourt said the experiment and other research suggest the stigma is enforced mainly by women.
Important Safety Tip: Avoid Yemeni Weddings
Oops.
"A man dancing to "Gangnam Style" at a wedding party in Yemen reportedly killed three people when he tried to fire his AK-47 in celebration and accidentally sprayed the group with bullets."
Hey man what gives him the right to interrupt a private robbing?
A family member who did not want to be identified said White should have never been shot to begin with.
"If his (the customer) life was not in danger, if no one had a gun up to him, if no one pointed a gun at him - what gives him the right to think that it's okay to just shoot someone?" said the relative. "You should have just left the store and went wherever you had to go in your car or whatever."
And yeah I'm pretty sure this was already covered on the blog but it's worth covering again.

Once the Democrats are no longer in power in the Senate or White House, they'll go back to demanding the supermajority for all Judicial nominees. They don't care about the rule of law, only power in their obsession with "equality".

We begin with Queen Margrethe II, a matriarch who has been painted by
Kluge with all of the graceful femininity of Tubbs from the BBC's League of Gentlemen.
Next to her sits her swollen husband, Henrik, who has been captured
with such close attention to detail that you can actually see the meat
sweats diffusing through his skin-tight velvet suit. Note also the tumor
or possible herpes sore disfiguring Henrik's upper lip, which Kluge has
made sure to render with nearly Rembrandt-like fidelity.
In the lower left-hand corner, Princess Isabelle rocks back and forth on the floor, staring with milk-white eyes into the distance as she purses her black lips and slowly twists her dolly's head off. To the right, young princes Nikolai and Felix build the metaphorical tower of blood that they must eventually climb to take the Danish throne for their own. But they will not ascend to claim their crimson thrones unchallenged. To get there, they must first defeat Prince Christian, the second heir to the throne, whom Kluge depicts as the 1,000-year-old Satanic dwarf in the center of the painting. But the prince will not easily be killed: he has splintered his soul between seven horcruxes, each of which has been hidden as a sort of Easter egg within Kluge's masterpiece. Can you find them all?
If you would like to have your soul stolen by Kluge's Danish royal portrait in person, Kongehuset is on exhibit at Copenhagen's Amelienbourg Museum from now until March 2, 2014.
That's just classic.Oh, and Primus is awesome.

Why do we keep entertaining these ridiculous fantasies. The democrats did this because they know there's no way in a thousand years any Republican will EVER do it to them. Who's going to? A President Romney? Ha, ha, ha. A President Christie will just nominate more Breyers and Souters. Democrats have looked across the field of battle into the eyes of the enemy and found out -- guess what -- that he doesn't exist. They have no enemy. Only if a Palin gets elected will a GOP President "line up the Federealist Society alumni" etc. No, it's over now. They pushed, McConnell got rolled, and it's a new world. Watch them goose-step over every rule of law and tradition left in this country.

Looking at her resume, the only thing I'd really know her from is 'The Class,' a short lived sitcom I liked. She has done a lot of work but little of it was in a show I'd watch.

Mom, "Took her in to get her hair trimmed. Can see her face now."

Mom, "Instead of having a furry face. And they put bows in her hair."
Mom to Dad in background, "Do you know how to remove the bows?"

And, sounds like your back isn't much better. Hope that neurosurgeon comes through soon. To make matters worse, the disk was literally bending several of the nerves going into my legs. So after a few days, I could barely walk. The worst was when I tried to take a warm bath, and literally couldn't get out of the tub. My family almost called 911 on me that night.
It was two days later when I went to my doctor, where I could barely stand long enough for them to weigh me. Then getting off the scale, I fell over. I was a basket case. Thank God it's over.

Plus, I love the fact that as classy a person as Adele, whose entire marketing strategy was basically her voice and raw pure talent (as opposed to Gaga's increasingly banal theatrics), pretty much put Gaga in her place a few years ago.
And then there was Amy Winehouse, whos marketing strategy was "another incredible talent whose personal life is a gigantic train wreck" a la Janis Joplin.

Is it just me getting older, or is everyone just getting tired of the incessant crap? Every year, there are fewer and fewer movies I want to see, albums I'm interested in owning, radio stations I'll put up with. It's hard to imagine that we're less than a week from Black Friday and I can't think of anything I'd be eager to acquire. Hell, I'm passing up t-shirts from places that we visit.
It's not that I've lost my joie de vivre -- it's just that I'd rather enjoy nice things instead of getting more crap. Half the time, I can't seem to dredge my favorite stuff out from under the garbage piled on-top of it. Am I losing bandwidth and cannot keep my finger on the pulse of pop culture -- or is pop culture dead as a doornail?

I'm a fan -- I love the lemons speech, and can sing both songs, and think the concept is fun....and haven't played either for months. There is just so much wrong in that painting. Some is disturbing when you're zoomed out -- like the girl at lower left with glowing eyes -- but gets better when you zoom in and see that she's looking sideways. But other stuff is only vaguely disquieting when zoomed out.....but gets seriously odd when examined more closely -- like how the figure in red on the couch (the queen?) looks like a tranny, while the other figure's eyes point in different directions [this is, btw, a common feature among the figures].

Cultivating the desire to hurt others robs you of your innocence.
And the realization that you have heard it all before allows you to rejoice in the creativity of those who can put a unique stamp on it.
For example, Pacific Rim == Godzilla, but dang! the pilot hydraulics are much better than the painted vacuum cleaner props they could afford in the original(s).
Ran == MacBeth, but with sushi and samurai ...
Star Wars == the Hidden Fortress but with laser beams and outer space!
et cetera.
Posted by: Adriane... at November 25, 2013 03:19 AM (jdRXP)
I don't think I've been cultivating the desire to hurt others all that much -- it's more like standing aside while others are hurt. As an example, take Obamacare -- it is, objectively and factually -- going to kill people. It's such a tremendous clusterfuck that, even were it repealed tomorrow, people who might otherwise have lived will perish. When it was passed, I wrote emails and letters, funded everyone I could, spoke out against it....and watched them sneak it through in the dead of night using procedural crap on a party-line swindle. Now it's years later, and people will start dying Q1, 2014.....and I'm going to let them. I did what I could when nobody had to die, and now I'm not doing a thing to help when people are actually going to die.
And I know, well, that plots have been recycled over-and-over in popular culture -- a huge chunk of Shakespeare's canon was recycled from Boccaccio's Decameron. But Shakespeare, at least, made it interesting. I'm finding less and less of a reason to engage at all with the current crop of "artists".

The place that showed movies wasn't one of my regular places, IIRC they pretty much had PBR only in the movie section. Not sue if it was on Little Creek or Granby.

Later yrs I lived in Hampton an hung out at a dive biker joint called 'KT's Buckroe Restaurant'

It's not that I'm uninterested in everything....I just spent some time since my last comment reviewing the birth of the Renaissance in Italy, especially the peregrinations of Petrarch and Boccaccio. I was amused by rhyme schemes in Italian octets (in which, unlike in English, a good half of words end with either "a" or "o") and Petrarch's pining over forbidden love (which reminded me of the earlier Heloise and Abelard -- which is always referenced in gauzy romanticisms while the historical account is gritty, cruel, ugly, and horrible -- including Abelard's castration by Heloise's relations).
Maybe I'm just feeling Sturgeon's law: "90% of everything is crap".

Posted by: PMRich at November 25, 2013 04:17 AM (KDUNf)
Or, in certain jurisdictions, honor killings. Of course, Abelard lived around 1100 AD, about 500 years after Mohammed.....and about 900 years ago.
Having a bunch of your henchmen break into a guy's room late at night and castrate him with a rusty (stainless steel wasn't invented until 800 years later) knife is a pretty direct (and hopefully archaic) method of dissuading him from dallying with your niece. Not quite the same as a facebook dislike.

There is another annoyance that comes with age. I can't remember the song that some boy band sang on the AMA awards tonight (my sister put it on until some idiot started spouting about how terrible the Traytable Martin thing was and how it cannot be allowed to happen again) but it had the same main lyric and title of a song from yore that held much fonder memories for me. Partly because it was from my youth and also because it was actually a good song rather than something utterly forgettable.
An example of this: If you mention the title 'Since You've Been Gone' I'm going to think this catchy tune is what you mean:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfWPqRtozh0
But somebody much below 30 is going to think this annoyance is the song in question:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7UrFYvl5TE
Technically not the same title but most would think it was. And the Kelly Clarkson song isn't as utterly forgettable as that boy band but if I was expecting to hear Rainbow and got her instead I'd be at the least disappointed. Maybe if I was a teen or twenty-something it would be different but I just don't think it has the same pizzazz as the older song.

Maybe I've had my heart broken too many times, when something with great promise turns stupid or becomes corrupted. Repetition has taught me to surrender my dreams of something made for the big screen that holds up to the book written for a very demanding audience. Movies cost far too much to live up to my standards. TV series can do a lot better thanks to having so much more time to tell a story but the cost factor still outweighs doing things right. So it becomes a parade of garbage with fantastic production values and a few bright spots occasionally.
That is just one aspect of life but it carries over to so much else. Too much experience tells me not to get my hopes too high when it comes to so many form of human endeavor.
