Because I'm entering Holiday Mode you get le ONT en advance.
As I've always said I like bicycling but not bicyclists. There's something about putting on spandex and taking an enjoyable pastime just a bit too seriously that brings out the ugly part of human nature in people. Christopher Caldwell of the Weekly Standard agrees:
Late last August, along the coast of New Hampshire, Kevin Walsh, police chief in the town of Rye, got a lecture on law enforcement from a bunch of grown-up bicyclists. Local law requires bikers to ride single-file when there is traffic. But this day, a pack of a dozen or so bikers were racing down Ocean Boulevard, at high speed, up to five abreast, according to an interview the chief later gave. Walsh decided to flag them down and tell them what they were doing was unsafe, "out of control," and "an accident waiting to happen."
He stood in the middle of Ocean Boulevard and signaled them to stop. The bikers blew past him in a whoosh! of Lycra, sweat, and profanity. Walsh got in his cruiser and cut off the bikers four miles up the road. When he stopped them, they began to chew him out. "You almost killed somebody back there, standing in the middle of the road," one of them screamed at the cop. "Do you understand we can't stop? Do you understand we can't stop like a car?"
And Sunny Bunch points out the obvious - that physics works against bicycles:
I just like that anecdote because it so perfectly captures the self-righteousness of the bicycling class and their utter refusal to deal with the simple physics of the situation they find themselves in. When it comes to roads, bicycles can neither accelerate properly nor decelerate properly nor defend themselves properly from the 3,000 lb. behemoths on the roads.
As does Bookworm:
My thinking has always been that the bicyclists believe that their environmental chops mean that they are wrapped in an invincibility cloak, one that allows them to ignore the law of physics. That is, I've thought that, in their overweening bicyclist arrogance, they truly believe that, even as they break all known traffic rules, they cannot be hurt because they're on the side of angels.
Oh and Bike Lanes Are Racist Too.
Apparently Fish DO Need Bicycles
That women prefer part-time work is simply irrefutable. It was true back in 2007, and it's even true among Ivy League graduates! Study after study, both here and abroad (the majority of women in the UK, Spain and other countries seek some combination of paid work and family work) shows women as a whole (the Sheryl Sandbergs notwithstanding) want multifaceted lives. They want balance.
And there's only one way to get it: rely on a man's more linear career goals. Unlike women, a man's identity is inextricably linked to his paycheck. That's how most men feel a sense of purpose. Indeed, research shows men see it as their duty to support their families even when their wives make as much money (or more) as they do!
Well as Instapundit points out women with husbands tend to vote Republican and the government can't have that.
Well good luck with that.

51 years ago Vasilli Arkhipov single-handedly prevented the Cuba Missile Crisis from going nuclear hot.
50 years ago, at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis, second-in-command Vasilli Arkhipov of the Soviet submarine B-59 refused to agree with his Captain's order to launch nuclear torpedoes against US warships and setting off what might well have been a terminal superpower nuclear war.
The US had been dropping depth charges near the submarine in an attempt to force it to surface, unaware it was carrying nuclear arms. The Soviet officers, who had lost radio contact with Moscow, concluded that World War 3 had begun, and 2 of the officers agreed to 'blast the warships out of the water'. Arkhipov refused to agree - unanimous consent of 3 officers was required and thanks to him, the world was saved from being scarred badly.

I've noticed the people who ride their crappy bikes to work b/c that's all they've got can manage to stop for the four-way stop, unlike the assfucks with the spandex.
My hypothesis is that regard for the rules of the road is inversely proportional to the bicyclists' ability to sue the fuck out of the motorist with the right of way.

My theory is that it has more to do with their life outside of cycling. If you're a selfish asshole who expects the world to jump through hoops for you at work, then why would that change on the road?

Yep.
I hit a bicyclette in Boulder '11. I was obeying the traffic laws; she was blasting across a pedestrian walk. I had no way of seeing her. She lost a bike and got scraped up (no hospitalisation required, praise G-d). I got a ticket for being at fault for, I guess, not having perfect clairvoyance.
I moved out of Boulder proper soon after that (since I was pretty much homeless then, that part wasn't so hard). I don't go back much.

There's no other way to describe these people than as total jerks.
They spit on drivers through open car windows, they throw various shit, they make a whole lot of noise, and they deliberately ride slow in gaggles to snarl vehicular traffic, and they do all of the above at peak commute hours. In SF. Which is a tiny hilly city with narrow inefficient roadways that tends to lock up frozen even without being deliberately interfered with.
I've spent a lot of my own life on two wheels, both engine powered and human powered forms, and I give anyone riding on two wheels considerable respect and distance when I'm behind the wheel of a car. But, the Mass-holes make me want to get out of the car and start throwing punches.

Again here in SF, one of the asshole local bicycle community came blasting down an extremely steep hill into an intersection as pedestrians were starting to cross on the far side (with the green light for the peds). He was going far too fast to even think about braking to a stop, and dumped the bike, but still had more than enough kinetic energy to slide into the crosswalk and kill some luckless old fart on foot.
The cyclist actually then put up a bunch of social media posts largely about himself and his chewed-up gear and bike. No real expression of interest in the person who had just died on the pavement in a huge pool of their own blood thanks to him.
Last I heard, he was going on trial. Which in San Francisco, for manslaughter, means most likely a time-served suspended sentence with probation. IF THAT. It would blow your mind the stuff for which SF juries won't convict.

An ex-USN bubblehead observed to me that there was a reason that extremely large diameter torpedo tubes showed up early on in Russkie boats. (Early as in just that early.)
Because, if you think about it, a nuclear torpedo does away with a lot of problems involving precision terminal guidance and discrimination of decoys. It just has to get within a few kilometers of the target to accomplish the job. A nuclear torpedo is also a neat way to wreck a harbor.
He said that when things were tense and they were patrolling with warshots loaded, their tactical posture always assumed the risk that if they fired on a Red sub, they might get a nuke-tipped revenge shot coming right back along that bearing.

The DA did the right thing and tried his ass. However, he only got probation and service. He should have been thrown in a Fed lockup and fined severely.
Poking around I see that those assholes have killed three people in NorCal.
I rode a bike while in college and rode through some rough urban locales. I get the danger involved with doing so. But the idea that there's no malicious recklessness in these cases is GD insane.

You know, I'm thinking that fogging the bike lane with a cloud from one of those pepper spray foggers would do wonders for the attitude of a spandex mob. Especially if it's around a blind corner.
And I still love my Surly singlespeed. Lots of fun.

I've already been warned about Rampart, and recommended several eateries (including Cafe Du Monde for beignets). But, as far as capturing images of the city that give a fair, reasonably accurate sense of the place (without risking life, liberty or property, of course), where should I go?

- Sorry but given most of their malfeasance is in SF, not sure why it should bother people. It's left-libs annoying left-libs, which is what most of them deserve IMHO.
- Would love to see them try that crap in places like Texas. There'd be so many of them crushed into the pavement, the state would probably deem "deceased CMer" a regular asphalt ingredient for the best road ride.

Oct 62 I was doing my usaeur tour. We provided security for a missile co near stuttgart.
In our kaserne, over the doors in the separate rooms was a light board with 3 lights. Yellow--most practice alerts where you moved most of the equipment to a preassigned area.
Green, same drill, but more stuff went out and you stayed for a day or so.
Red, EVERYTHING mobile went.
the 24th, we woke up to the klaxon and saw that red light blinking. Scared the shit out of everyone.
Out we went, I set up our perimeter and issued ammo. We loaded and locked weapons hot. Stayed that way for 18 hours and then stood down.
Scary time, because we all were aware that we wouldn't survive an nuclear exchange.

It always seemed foolish to me to ever do otherwise - acting unpredictably makes it harder for car-drivers to avoid hitting you.

I love the story that chili basically came from deep southern prisons who were basically forced to make near-completely rotten leftover beef palatable to inmates. So they just hacked it to almost molecule-size bits and added so much hot spice, chiles and other ingredients, it became the beginning of the legendary stew we know today.

Near as I can figure, chili long predates the era of such prisons, and is a general manifestation of having to make old gamey meat palatable from the era before refrigeration. A long era, needless to say. We forget the recency of ubiquitous cold.
I asked a cheerful Thai guy who cooked absolutely rocket hot (hot enough to make me pop out in sweat, which is REALLY SERIOUSLY FUCKING PRAY FOR INSTANT DEATH HOT) when his family began to use that level of pepper in their cooking.

I've thought about doing a post about how we live in an "age of magic". Almost everything in our live would be considered magic 200 years ago.

What's really going on here is that it sucks to get started again on a bike, especially one of those $1500 5-ounce jobs with the pedals that clip on to your feet. Its tiring and frustrating to get going again. And it feels wonderful to fly along rapidly. That's it. They don't want to stop, there's no physics against them. Idiots.
Bicyclists are a serious menace in the Northwest. They are basically insane to be biking around in a city to begin with in the NW, but they treat cars like they don't belong on the road. They beat on your car, cut you off, block the entire road with swarms of bikes trying to shut off car traffic, and so on. And the city loves it, they want more in Seattle and Portland.
And if you ever, EVER hit a bicyclist... you're at fault, no matter what. Its idiotic.

In one word.
Yes.
God also gave the ability to the poor person to improve their situation by working or other means and God is also the reason the Doctors are sent to cure the child with cancer.
God also gave the ability to the chemist to design the drugs that will help cure the child and the desire of Doctors and Nurses to help heal the child.
He also made you a dorkwad but thats another story

Oh, crap, I had to come back to say that my dad, like many of your dads, I'm sure, had an eighth grade education, but he's the smartest guy I know. Not just in farming, or mechanical, but all around SMART! He hates playing Trivial Pursuit or any game with us, but he'll pipe in with the correct answer if he hears us floundering. The key: reading. He's read more books than I could ever hope to. And I read a LOT! And thanks to my dad, he instilled that in me. People are always so mystified about how I know things. Duh. Read. (This looks like a humble brag, but it's not. I am just thankful that my Dad gave me a love of reading.)

I got about 90 minutes of sleep last night. The local raccoon family got into it with a neighbor's dogs just after I dropped off. Sounded like World War III, the director's cut. I never got back to dreamland.
Extra caffeine was required as I headed out this morning. Fortunately, I had a coffee bar fully staffed by college graduates with straight-A degrees in Grievance Studies to make sure that my caffeine requirements were fully taken care of. I like reliability and constancy in life, and it's great to know that those very same college graduates will still be there to handle my brewing requirements in the year 2033.

He gave you the will to believe or not as you will. That does not have any effect on what his will is. If it his will for you to experience pain and suffering, you will.
Your reaction to that is of your own free will.
Hope that clarifies it for you.

Near as I can figure, Mr. MM relies upon his wife and her friends as absolutely infallible oracles with regard to all of life's vexing questions.
For instance, Mr. MM's wife and her friends think that assault rifles are "scary".

As the Bible is the work of Jewish authors, and as I say quite a little about Jews and Judaism in this book, I wish to take pains to explain my position in advance. Rationalism is much indebted to the educated Jew. Even more is the Jew indebted to Rationalism. The only miracle in the history of Israel was performed by Rationalism. All the Bible miracles are nothing in comparison. Rationalism has saved the Jew from his greatest enemy - the Bible.
...
the poet Heine exclaimed: "Judaism is not a religion; Judaism is a misfortune" (Philosophy and Religion in Germany). The same poet congratulates himself upon the hastening departure of Jehovah: "It is the old Jehovah himself that is preparing for death. Hear ye not the bells resounding? Kneel down, they are bringing the sacraments to a dying God."

Does this all sound familiar? I would think by now almost 100 years later the detractors would have better and more refined arguments.

You're contradicting yourself twice over.
You've told me that God is responsible for your well being. And God is responsible for kids with cancer (since it then gives God the chance to send nurses and doctors to help them).
But if I say I have nothing to do with my actions, it's all due to God, I'm not well learned on the finer points of religion.

I think the fundamental problem is that you're trying to talk down to everyone here....but you're doing it with a bunch of word games that everyone else outgrew before they hit High School. If you were actually curious about why God allows suffering, hit Bing -- there's 3,230,000 results, you could maybe read a few. Instead, you come here to badger people with your preening condescension.
Or maybe you could read some C. S. Lewis -- tightly reasoned works that he put together painstakingly over years which, to his mind, inevitably lead to Faith. Not getting in the face of a bunch of drunks who want to hang out and have a good time. You'd get better answers, and you wouldn't piss people off.
Now, mind you, there are a lot of folks on the blog who may have read and understood Lewis' works, and who might be going, "er, ummm....if I could just say it half as beautifully as he did, I'd sound like a fookin' genius next to this moo-guy." But what that is effectively saying is that they've forgotten more than you ever knew. Go get yourself some learnin' -- take a class or something, maybe go to one of them there collitches you keep runnin' on about.

For someone with such a high regard for going to college, you sure have managed to turn out undereducated. Do you go storming into bars and demanding that people recite Paradise Lost? Do you accost people on streetcorners and demand they explain quantum theory? Do you burst into bus terminals and demand that the guy sleeping on a bench tell you how to make Bechamel sauce? So why the hell are you here nattering on about "why does God allow suffering" when there are thousands of more authoritative sources?
You're just as pathetic here as you would be at the Greyhound station, loudly declaiming to a bunch of people who could care less, "He doesn't know how to make white sauce!!!!" How can he consider himself educated if he can't make a white sauce?

The EM waves induce voltages on the aluminum foil. If the foil is resonant at the wave's frequency and not grounded, it will re-radiate the radio waves since it's effectively an antenna. If it's grounded or non-resonant, most of the energy will be dissipated via currents to ground or in the form of heat due to eddy currents (i.e. the sparking fork in the microwave)

It would take infinite time to even attempt via enumeration, yet there are possible truths in that universe that are unprovable, yet true.
That was the crux of Godel's work. There can be true things its impossible to prove true using the rules of a system. They may however be proven true in a higher order system operating with somewhat expanded rules.
trivial ex. The volume of a cube in 3D space is LxLxL, yet making that statement in flatland, while manifestly true, is unprovable because flatlander rules only allow for 2D operations.

I think it got a few answers tonight that it wasn't fishing for. Besides, I've been amusing myself by thinking up the adventures of "Dr. Oink-Oink, Sooper Geeeneeeus, with credentials to prove it!"
I agree that he's just stirring up shit, but the fact that this has been repeated so many times means that we need either (a) bannination, (b) toleration, or (c) something that induces him to want to play nice or stay away. I'm going with (c) and a solid dose of Alinsky #5 -- not quite as pleasant as Chanel #5, but fragrant nonetheless.

For somebody who has all the answers, you haven't considered the answer to; "what happens if the lights go out for 2 weeks or the dollar collapses"
I'm pretty sure your faith as it were begins and ends with "I'm so smart, nothing bad will happen to me and I'm my own deux ex machina"
If we're ever in a situation where The Burning, SMOD, or other massive shit getting real happens, your college degree won't be worth shit if you think you're still going to hand out a few bucks to have a lesser intellect do your work for you, especially if the ATM's don't work and the lackey you expect to do the little things only takes cash or bartered goods

Actually, I'm more partial to the wider fingerboard [fat fingers] and tonal options available from a splittable-pickup Les Paul clone. You lose a touch of the brittley-bright Strat sound (but get close), but can also get into great washy fullness. I'm notso hotso on the set neck, so I actually prefer the clones -- although, to be truthful, it's not like anyone's shoved a $6000 1959 goldtop into my hands for comparison.

Their little stunt where they shut down the government in hopes of delaying Obamacare cost the US economy $2 billion and 120,000 jobs.

Yeah its a screamer. I'm usually a hot ceramic magnet pickup dude, but this thing breaths some fire. Yeah this has a great neck on it, really comfy. I have routed '55 custom with a duncan distortion in the bridge (to appease the metal gods). That has a soft V neck, and its flat out fucking possessed. My only complaint was they did the full 57 conversion, so it had 3 pafs in it when I got it, and I had to lower that middle pickup down, because I hate middle pickups with the heat of 1000 suns, they get in the way. There is something to those old suckers, thats for sure. Those are the only two 50's vintage guitars I have. I didn't even want to START going down that road.

You are not a Christian or Jewish believer correct?
Posted by: GMB-Schoolyard bully at November 27, 2013 02:21 AM (nkPV9)
The problem that arises is twofold. First, there is a wide variety of evidence that is based on reasonably well-understood phenomena within the scientific framework that would lead to the earth being pretty darned old. This goes from radioactive decay (as eman mentioned) to plate tectonics, speciation, geologic core dynamics, archeology, selenology (examination of craters), and many more. This leads to observation #1 -- God obviously wants the sciences to believe in this way because he has arranged for the evidence to overwhelmingly show this.
Second, the evidence for 4000 years is somewhat flaky. If you own a couple of Bibles, why is the King James so different from the New English? Why is the New American Standard version different from both? Simply put, the Bible comes from a variety of sources which may or may not accurately track the original inerrant word of God, and -- in any case -- none of those versions are in modern, colloquial English [of either the UK or American sort]. From what I understand, a great deal of the Old Testament uses words that can translate as "years", "cycles", "phases", or "ages"; "days", "periods", or "phases"; or "seasons", "cycles", "phases", or "turns" -- and these are normally translated as "years", "days", and "seasons", respectively. In addition, 4000-year-estimates are generally constructed by splicing all known events together into a seamless timeline....which may make as much sense as splicing together events at your home based on whether you were using the 2012 AT+T yellow pages or the 2013 "Good Neighbor" yellow pages.
So we're left with an "angels dancing on the head of a pin" issue -- how many can? Depends on what God feels like -- he can shrink the angels, grow the pin, increase the angels' agility.....or not. He has decided that science should show the world being old. OK, fine -- it's old.

When I was 15, I was seriously, "rah, rah, rah -- atheism!" and did the big intellectual sneer at believers like Dr. Oink-Oink is doing today, but I soon grew out of it. Fact is, atheism is as much a statement of belief as any other creed -- and when you start thinking about what is able to be known, you start looking at atheists as assholes. Then you start seeing the world without so much filtering, and quite a lot of stuff makes you go, "hmmmm....".
Now, that doesn't mean I've got God's email addy, or that He phones me up twice a week to check up on things. But I'll act like He's around, and sometimes things happen that sort-of hint that He is. But in the meantime, the very least I can do is to respect the Faith of others.

The Pope will never get a fair shake in the current media. Everything about him will be slanted, misquoted, badly contextualized, or spun into the aether. 48-hour rule applies.

Check hotair.com for large chunks of quotations from folks who like what they hear and those who properly recognize it as madness. Stuff like capitalism causing poverty, and allowing poverty to continue is a violation of Thou shalt not kill.
And of course no recognition that all redistribution immediately runs afoul of Thou shalt not steal.
It's a document rather than a speech, which makes misinterpretation less likely, unless deliberate. Which as cthulhu notes is always possible.

exactly.
Further, do I really care why someone is motivated to be a decent person or should I just be thankful that they always make an effort to be a decent person? (side note -- I hate the whole 'hypocrite' political weapon -- the only people that are never hypocrites have zero for standards. All of the rest of us fail to meet our own standards at least sometimes. The higher one sets one's standards, the more often one will miss [although the negative consequences of the miss will diminish more and more.])
Should I really worry about where my rights come from, or should I just continue enforcing the statement that they all come from God so I can carefully explain to all the fucking slavers that I will kill each and every one of them before I give up those rights?
Should I really go out of my way to piss on people whose only "crime" is annoying people by trying the help them?
Should I really pick on people with the foresight to store canned goods and dry blankets? Should I make snide comments about the charitable organizations they run, the universities they fund (even if the asshole professors inside it shit on them the whole time) and the hospitals they build and operate?
Only an idiot (or obnoxious prick or both) spends time shitting on the nuances of someone's faith rather than noticing actual, tangible, measurable deeds and recognizing the benefits of those deeds.

I left my church because I have no intention of making efforts on behalf of those building Satan's kingdom, of which socialism/government idolatry is a prominent part these days.
I know for Roman Catholics, a lot of weight is put on the importance of being part of The Church, but for a lot of the rest of us Christians, we prefer to form congregations and denominations based on shared beliefs and the values they generate.

Capitalism causes poverty? The phrase unclear on the concept comes to mind. Poverty is the natural state of mankind. How can an artificial system of mutually beneficial interaction cause the default condition that preceded its existence?

If someone swoops in and takes something from A and gives it to B, A is going to be hurt and B will be better off. Looking at the overall society, this can be net good or bad.
If someone swoops in and swaps something from A for something from B, then A and B can feel better off, A and B can feel worse off, A can feel better off and B could feel worse off, or A can feel better off and B can feel worse off. From the view of overall society, this can be net good or bad.
But in a free market, A and B meet, look at each other's stuff, maybe adjust amounts, and decide to trade -- and both A and B will feel better off afterward or they will not trade at all. This makes a free market the only guaranteed winner, where overall society benefits with a net good from all participants.
Now there are all sorts of criticisms to raise about free-market capitalism, but the one overriding factor that needs to be taken into account is that it has net benefit to all society.

Use actual dust/grit. (very very fine. think scale; the smaller the scale the finer the dirt)
Apply in layers a little at a time.
Go look at rusty, dusty, dirty old abandoned vehicles/metal structures to see how rust and weather streaks.
Think dulled colors, flats no shiny (unless it's a chemical).
use metal brushes (very carefully and modestly. Remember SCALE. To make scrapes in paint.
Use Scotch dish pads for fine abrasion. Any High points should be points of streaking/rust. The highest blade gets cut first.

The best irony of the whole thing --- "The invisible hand" takes a little faith. It works just like you described as long as the underlying assumptions of the Law of S/D hold true (scarcity, multiple wants, rationality, substitutability, diminishing marginal valuation).
And, where the underlying assumptions do not hold true, people have the option of forming governments to address the issues presented by that set of facts.

Now, drivers can be quite stupid and inconsiderate too. Besides passing why too close, some idiots will have a passenger roll down their window and suddenly yell just as they go past. Have they no clue that if they are successful in startling the cyclist that that person may well lose control and crash into their car or fall behind it to be hit by another car? It isn't just a matter of losing complete control because of someone yelling. On a bike you are often very restricted in the path you can follow because of rocks or potholes. So even a tiny fluctuation can cause you to hit something that leads to loss of control.
People, all of them, just need to use a little common sense and be considerate.

It's not so much that it is a buzz kill as much as the fact that accelerating from a dead stop takes a lot more effort than rolling through at even a half a mile an hour. You really notice this if you drive a car with a stick shift and an engine that is underpowered for the weight of the vehicle. Like a Toyota Matrix. American traffic signs are set up for vehicles with automatic transmissions and a lot of horsepower. I used to wonder why European roads were set up with so many more yield signs than stop signs but driving that underpowered Matrix and experiencing the same kind of issues that you encounter on a bicycle was an enlightening, if frustrating experience.

Oh, I wish I had the day off, Jerry!
Anyway, here's the morning story:
Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.
When you watch a movie, how often do you think of the editor? According to editor Edward Dmytryk, it is the art of film-making, and without it, movies ould be little more than photographed stage plays.
In the early days, of course, films were unedited. Cameras recorded a scene in one continuous shot from the front, producing a static, stagey view. It wasn’t until Edison director Edwin S. Porter (of the first “blockbuster,” The Great Train Robbery) began piecing strips of film containing different scenes together that he realized the possibilities the medium had to offer.
When talkies came in, the editor’s job became more difficult; now he (often she) had to contend with words as well as pictures. Many times, when performers blew their lines, a good editor could piece together a strand of dialogue from different takes rather than call everyone back for retakes. The height of this art may have come during the filming of 1953s Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, where legend holds that every line of “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend” had to be spliced together because Marilyn Monroe was incapable of singing the song straight through.
Another example comes from the 1935 movie Ruggles of Red Gap. Director Leo McCarey was having difficulties with a scene where Charles Laughton, as the English butler Marmaduke Ruggles, was to recite the Gettysburg Address in a Western saloon. The problem was that Laughton became so overwrought with emotion as he recited the address that the scene turned into a joke – which was not what anyone wanted. The scene went through nearly 50 retakes before Laughton begged for mercy and McCarey agreed to hold off on filming for a while.
At this point, Dmytryk (remember him?) suggested that they use the best parts of the various takes and edit them together into a seamless recitation. McCarey agreed and Dmytryk went to work. Using a line here or a phrase there or sometimes even single words, he finally pieced together a complete version of the speech. And for years afterward, radio networks asked Laughton to recite the Gettysburg Address whenever LincolnÂ’s birthday rolled around.
Ruggles also starred Mary Boland and ZaSu Pitts*, neither of whom are remarkably attractive women, so no real cheesecake today. Instead, hereÂ’s a chilling shot of Pitts in Erich von StroheimÂ’s lost masterpiece Greed. She is the doomed Trina, paranoid winner of a lottery prize, sleeping on her bed of gold coins:

Hope you all have a happy Thanksgiving and a wonderful day. See you all on Monday.
*Her name was a portmanteau word made from her given names of Eliza Susan; itÂ’s pronounced ZAY-sue.

Rightly or wrongly, my opinion of bicyclists who stray onto the public roads crystallized a few years back when this happened:
My family -- wife, two boys and I -- were coming back from riding our own bikes on the Silver Comet Trail one Sunday morning. At one particular point, the Trail (an old railroad right-of-way) dips down to cross a road at an intersection with a traffic light. We were sitting in our Odyssey at the light when it turned green. Something made me hesitate before moving forward -- and a bicyle flashed by in front of us, clearing the front bumper by no more than a foot! Someone had decided he didnÂ’t need to break his momentum by stopping for the newly-red traffic light, and if I had not hesitated, he would have smeared himself across the right-hand side of our van, and likely killed himself in front of my childrenÂ’s eyes.
When I recoved my wits, I leaned on the horn and looked left at the bicyclist pedalling up the grade onto the Trail. He was a young guy in bugeye sunglasses, an ‘Alien’ helmet, and blue spandex. He hadn’t had time to stop for a red light or to preserve his own life, but he had time to stand up on his pedals and give me the finger. I wish I could recognize him in street clothes; I would like to meet him. Socially.
ThatÂ’s what I find infuriating about that certain class of bicyclists who insist on mingling with motorized traffic that weighs ten times what they do and moves at speeds three times theirs. ItÂ’s not territoriality on my part, or even having to occasionally slow down to get around them. ItÂ’s that they engage in inherently reckless, dangerous behavior -- and put the burden of their safety in my hands. I donÂ’t want to kill anyone, even by accident and even if the law eventually decides it was an accident.

Everybody operating any kind of vehicle in Boston sucks. I will never drive there again. Every time I visit my sister I either fly into a different airport or, if I fly into Logan, I get a cab to someplace outside of Boston where I rent a car.
When I am at home, if I see a car with Massachusetts plates I change lanes to get away from them on the chance that they are from Boston. If I were running the state government, I would not recognize a Massachusetts driver's license and direct the state police to pull them over and escort them to the nearest state border so that they can crash into people some place else.

Since I drive and ride, I encounter assholes in cars and on bikes. Since I understand the enormous difference in mass and because I have lived long enough to understand my own vulnerability I try to avoid busy streets wherever possible, even to the extent of riding 22 miles on a trip that is 14 miles by car on heavily traveled roads. I always stop at red lights but I will roll through stop signs after seeing that there is nobody else on either road and no cops nearby. If there is a shoulder on the road, I will usually ride there unless it is too full of potholes or debris. I almost always ride by myself and never with a pack five abreast blocking traffic. Since I am carrying a handgun, I don't give people the finger because I do not want social situations to escalate to something really unfortunate if it can be avoided.
As you have pointed out, a bicycle rider is very vulnerable. Deliberately swerving into his path or opening a car door in their face is at least as likely to cause death or serious injury as sucker punching somebody in "the knock out game". What do you think is an appropriate response to unprovoked assault with a deadly weapon? How about if someone has premeditated a deadly assault enough to assemble a weapon from a slingshot, a bolt, high strength fishing line and a fish hook?
Even FMJ 9mm will not reliably penetrate through a car door or dashboard. However 7.62x25 Tokarev will go through car doors even if it hits the window crank mechanism. If my state goes to open carry, I will be wearing it in a holster on the left side to discourage asshats from getting a foot behind me and honking their horn or throwing stuff at me.

Been to several funerals which were attended by the Patriot Guard. In Holland, MI, a year or two back, the Westboro shits were rumored to be showing up for a Marine's funeral. The local Baptist preachers wanted to take the brand back from the Phelps brood and get their folks to turn out.
Got to be a big deal.
The procession passed an assisted living place. The old folks were out there in their wheel chairs, with staff, holding flags.
I estimate about eight thousand people. The PG had, said one guy, 600 bikes, and there were other clubs.
Am I a bad person for presuming the spandex crowd would consider that hopelessly lower-class?

Strange, but I never said I ride on one of the busiest streets at 5:30 PM, taking the whole road, did I?
But, even if I did, as I pointed out, I would not be taking the lane or otherwise obstructing traffic for more than a matter of less than 30 seconds.
Then there is the fact that if I was even out on the road at that time where I live, I would have no trouble going as fast as car traffic anyway! In fact, I'd probably be going faster than traffic on a bike lane or sidewalk in that situation.
You see, I account for EVERYTHING in MY particular situation in order to be considerate.
