Christmas is the next feast day--ours will feature the Christmas goose, several ducks, venison, and ham.

There's plentiful deer meat so the choice cuts will be used.

We bone our deer to avoid the marrow flavoring the meat since it's so pungent.

The pie choices I'm not sure about yet, I make them and haven't decided on.

87 Jack La Lanne was an awesome dude. I've always been a pudge, and I could actually watch his show....and feel like doing something other than throwing a brick through the TV. He always had that "come along with me...." vibe instead of "you there, Fatty!"

I always liked to hear about his stunts like towing 70 rowboats a mile in Long Beach Harbor while handcuffed and shackled....at the age of 70. His message was, "I was a fuckup until I was 15 -- come with me and do amazing things!"

I've managed to do a few amazing things, myself, since I was a kid....though I'm still packin' the pounds....and some small part of it was because Jack told me I could.

88 I'm so stuffed I can hardly move... can still type at least, lol. I ate too  much of -- well, everything! Especially greenbean casserole (made this year accidentally with cheddar  French's fried onions but was very good) and stuffing. I still had room for pumpkin pie and whipped cream, tho.

About turkey being dry, my mom's so sick of turkeys not turning out year after year that she started doing baked chicken several years ago. More consistent and flavorful.

It's pretty impressive what the OT and PT people can do. Your brother's case is very different, but even so, my mom had had a fall at 91 years old, and they managed to get her back so she could get around with a walker. He'll probably get depressed because PT can be painful. My older brother is in a rehab hospital right now because he had cysts on his back. When my other brother suggested we all send him cards(he's in another state), I made up a card with iPhoto. I used a photo of him in a cowboy outfit when he was about 4 years old, back in the fifties. I already have picked out a really old photo of him with my older sister, myself, and a department store Santa from around 1954, that I am going to use for a Christmas card. Yo, Slappy! Up @97, Carol's bro is hurting.

I want to say that, even in this time of gratitude, there can still be pain. Even at the worst of times, we can cherish the good times there have been. Even when we're feeling most alone, we can "hang-in" until we can "hang-out" with those we love. And I want to say that Paul is important to us, though we've never met him and he's never talked to us.....because he's important to Carol and God. And, y'know, whatever God and Carol can agree on -- that's da shiznit.

175 Best recipe for homemade burgers I know:

Grind your own. 80/20 fat to lean sirloin or other cuts. Grind on to a doubled up sheet of plastic wrap as about as long as a tenderloin. Roll the grind in the plastic. Sure you can mix different meat but orthodox first, experiment later.

Key: cut the roll in to 4 - 5"  chunks. Each chunk is a patty waiting to be pressed down against the grain. The point being that the grind is going to have a horizontal alignment. The burger has a better bite and stay a bit juicier.

Salt only on raw meat. Pepper on cooked sides plus any other seasoning. Salt doesn't burn; other seasoning does.

Also, pea-to-walnut size bit of butter on top after the first flip. Test for done-ness by touch.

188 Also sad that past century Presidents actually expected the ordinary people in our country to be educated, thoughtful, and capable of understanding things in an adult manner, while today we watch a stutter moron read drivel from a teleprompter and we are told he is brilliant.

Thanks for pointing that out. That is part of my painful nostalgia. Yes those past Presidents could speak that way because they weren't speaking to a purposefully dumbed down public.

189 Personally, I *like* that pi is 3.14159 . . . whatever. In radians that gets you from the front of the circle to the back. 2*pi, which gets you back to where you started, is pointless and zero.

190 I only hope, with what I have, that our friends outside religion can see the power of love through example.

I've said before that praying for one's adversaries is the hardest thing to do.  It is often forgotten and should be a staple.  A reminder that these are not our mortal "enemies".  They are not "others", as my own laughter and ridicule often indicate.

They are all God's children.  While their grasp of simple mathematics is clouded by False Idols, their humanity remains.  Our love for them hasn't waned.  It has only been temporarily rejected by ideology.

-When an atheist spurns a holiday, he knows not his misfortune of "caricature".  He sees not his own "religion".

-When a progressive says, "Get Out Of My Bedroom!", he does not see that he wants into every room of your house.

-When someone asks you to care for your fellow human being?  You do so voluntarily.  Coercion leads to sanctioned theft.
-Theft of mind.
-Theft of body.
-Theft of soul.

We see this proven daily and throughout history.

When "Progressives" see Government as the Cuddly Cure-All for what Ails "Society".  (I HATE the word 'society'.)  It defies the Nature of the Human Condition.

Government is a Slow, Cold Automaton.  It doesn't "feel your pain".  It lumbers endlessly toward Regulation of Society.  It knows no Constitutional Laws within its elitist system of endless immoral nonsense.

Much of Government is a racket that uses coercion to reward interest groups with unearned wealth.  Above All Else, the "Public Sector" is a racket for Insiders, Cronies, Bureaucrats and Interest Groups.

Its insulation allows it to "feel" nothing.  Its paycheck is guaranteed.

...It steals it from you.

Well written.  I come to the same place from a different direction.

Government is only one thing -- our attempt to form a monopoly on the use of force.   This is a very valid goal to strive for, as we are better off with courts rather than 'The Don,' police rather than mobs, armed forces rather than warlords, etc.

Somehow we got it in our dinky little brains that we should start assigning all our problems to the entity we invented to hold the monopoly on force.   It is no surprise that the entity is incapable of seeing any possible solutions that are not focused on the use of force.

I'll post a follow up in a couple minutes.

209 The underlying assumption that "Government will solve all the problems" is now so embedded that many people cannot even see that they have made that assumption when you say it in plain English.  They look with their heads tilted like a Labrador Retriever if one suggests that their assumption can actually be debated.

Worse, our current government (regardless of party in power at any given time) only has one tool in the toolbox -- and that is bureaucracy.  Big toolbox -- huge toolbox --- only one tool inside.

Would you take you car to a mechanic that only had hammers in his tool collection?  Watching him trying to back out a screw with a hammer would be like .......watching the launch of Ocare.

We have been inventing new bureaucracies for a long, long time.  Imhotep was a bureaucrat.  But just because there are jackhammers, jewelers hammers and every kind of hammer in between doesn't make a hammer a good substitute for screwdrivers, pliers, saws, dies, sockets, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.

Bureaucracy is like aging.  It is a human condition and there is nothing we can do about it.  But, we don't have to pretend it is omniscient, omnipotent, and infallible.

211 I thought the tryptophan "deal" was debunked?  I thought it was in such small amounts that it actually had no factor in drowsiness.

My understanding from years ago was that the sheer amount of food eaten caused the blood to go to the digestive system instead of the brain.

I also thought that the one-half hour after eating and before swimming was also debunked.  The reasoning for that is cloudier in my mind than the former "debunking", but still prominent.

It is from this viewpoint that the Libertarians command my attention.  Allowing FEDERAL jurisdiction over my finances is a bridge too far

As Reagan once said, "It is not that our Liberal friends don't know anything.  It is just that so much of what they 'know', just isn't true."

State-wise, you can vote with your feet.  The once-prominent axiom, "All Government is Local", no longer provides for the numerous Federal Appointments to Unelected Positions of Power.

The Seventeenth Amendment made States' Rights inconsequential.  Why not have one Senator per State?  Why not seventeen?  It makes no difference.  The States have been relegated to National Popularity Contests and your prize is an anti-coal Senator in a coal mining State; (such as Ohio and Sherrod Brown).

It has been argued by smart people on this blog that State Legislatures may do no different, should they appoint Senators, as had been the rule "Pre-Seventeenth", but shouldn't all Government be "Local" --?

Shouldn't you be able to "Vote with Your Feet" locally?

Federal rules, regulations, fees, fines, taxes and legislation has made this a vote of "strained peas vs. pea soup".  The Feds have a stranglehold on the States via Grants and Top-Down governance.

The "Popularity Contest" makes it even worse.

Once Government actually becomes more local and the people stop thinking "D" - or - "R"?

...we just might have a fighting chance.

The debunked result was that not only did your tablespoon of worthlessness float to the surface, but it retarded the pasta's sauce-grabbing properties.

Since I hadn't put the word "weasel" into quotations, I suppose the metaphorical nature of the origins might slip one's mind.

...perhaps not.

...perhaps we're too far down that rabbit-hole where the color of the pill no longer matters.

It doesn't matter.  I'm headed off to rock some Def Leppard and smoke some cigarettes I've rolled myself.

264 Night Slapweasel.

265 >> What Karl Rove doesn't understand is that The Tea Party sells. He doesn't even know his own market.

The Tea Party is an expression of an underlying unrest -- Proof in point, it basically has no national leaders. It just is.

It's true that we are up against an implacable foe, an internal one, that will not rest until their vision of a gubmint controlled utopia is established. But many things are going in the direction of Liberty. Just not at the federal level, yet.

Many more state gun laws have been loosened than tightened.

Many (most!) states refused to participate in the 404care exchanges.

Eminent domain laws have been restricted by several states, making it much harder to use than the SC has foolishly ruled it can be applied.

More people are politically involved, most of a conservative/libertarian bent. This is not the same as voters as the Dems are continuing to game the system to register more LIVs. But will they vote? And will they vote in the way that Dems expect?

CNN and MSNBC have lost over half of their viewers in a single year, a development that has to be causing a lot of clenched assholes on the Progressive side. News is getting out in a lot of new ways.

404Care is the gift that keeps on giving, and will keep on giving, support to the view that those crazy conservatives were telling the truth. What other lies might start to be questioned?

Lots of Republican governors.

These are a few of my favorite things.

Interesting ......... didn't know that.  Is that something that cycles with the Prez elections--that is, did something similar happen in 2008-09?

Hey Bers,

Happy Thanksgiving.

I thought half of CNN's viewers were people stuck in waiting rooms and airports and have to watch without a choice.

It was a Drudge link from a few days ago. In searching for that link, I did see a lot of variation over the past 9 years in various links. Politics does play a pretty big role in viewership, it seems.

Yeah interesting point, most of the viewers seem to be exactly that. The airports always have that shit on.

Fox has more viewers than CNN and BSNBC combined. Here's a fairly recent (Nov. 7) Mediaite article on their comparative ratings:

The truth about the State-level Legislative landslide is true.  In Ohio, the turn to Republican leadership amongst the Legislature was decisive.

...here's the problem.  Our Governor, John Kasich, who has filled in for Limbaugh and O'Reilly; and espoused Tea Party principles?  Has gone around the Republican Legislature, (much like Obama), and has pulled stunts like these:

http://www.freedomworks.org/state/ohio/rss

The links in this link are numerous.  The studied voter would take three hours to comprehend and verify them.  They are "wonkish", to say the least.

Once defeated in a State Vote by people who didn't want to cut "Public Sector" Union salaries and Pensions?  Kasich did a One-Eighty.  Our "conservative" talk radio guys kept saying that "he'd tried to cut too far".

They made the police and fire departments sound like they'd be slashed.  These were "conservatives".  On the radio.  They were all sounding like Karl Rove.

They weren't driven by Rove, but they couldn't see the "political" value of fastidious spending.

These populists found a home in their jobs, let alone the political nature of taking a stand against Unions.

One of these "so-called" conservatives was Bob Frantz.  1100 WTAM, Cleveland.

He's entertaining enough, but he is a Major League Pussy when it comes to Police and Fire.

-"We'll cut it.", says Ohio.

-"We went too far.", said Bob Frantz.

He. Does. Not. Get. It.

He continues to defend these Unions to this day.  He's a good talk-show host.  He just doesn't understand "Public Sector" Fuck-You-ery.

Theft comes in many forms.  Not telling the whole truth is one of them.

294 Our turkey turned out perfect. We only cooked a 10 lb bird, and that was plenty for the two of us and three guests. We served it with mushroom stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, broccoli rabe and shoe string cut root carrots and turnips frites. This year we brined the turkey, then rubbed olive oil with a little oil of oregano mixed in it and basted it with vegetable broth. We'll probably do it this way from now on.
