Take The Geek Test

I could recognize 12 of the 16 symbols which I guess puts me in the geeky but not shamefully geeky category.

Quote of the Day

"The feminist convention is for the woman to continue using her father's name as a statement against patriarchy."

Chris Christie: Kind of a Jerk

From the Mark Halperin and John Heilemann book describing when Romney was considering Christie as a running mate:

He was also a fundraising dynamo, but he and his staff were overbearing and hard to work with, demanding in ways that would have been unthinkable from any other surrogate. Months earlier, Christie had banned Romney from raising money in New Jersey until Christie had given the O.K. to do so-a move Romney found galling, like something out of The Sopranos. Are you kidding me, Mitt thought. He's going to do that? There were plenty of New Jersey donors who'd given money to Mitt in 2008; now Christie was trying to impose a gag order on talking to them? "He sounds like the biggest asshole in the world," Stevens griped to his partner, Russ Shriefer. More recently, Trenton insisted on private jets, lavish spreads of food, space for a massive entourage. Romney ally Wayne Berman looked at the bubble around Christie and thought, He's not the President of the United States, you know.

Chronically behind schedule, Christie made a habit of showing up late to Romney fundraising events. In May he was so tardy to a donor reception at the Grand Hyatt New York that Mitt wound up taking the stage to speak before Christie arrived. When the Jersey governor finally made his grand entrance, it was as if Mitt had been his warm-up act...

Car Washes Banned in San Jose, CA

Another ratchet in the nanny state noose:

Students in San Jose, Calif., can no longer hold car washes to raise for money for school events because city officials say they endanger the environment.

Cheerleaders at Lincoln High School had to cancel a scheduled Oct. 20 car wash after a visit from the city's Environmental Services Department, the San Jose Mercury News reported Friday.

"Anything that is not storm water or rain water is considered a pollutant," said Jennie Loft, the department's acting communications manager. "If it goes into a storm drain, that pollutant will harm wildlife and habitats in the creeks."

Loft said school groups could still hold car washes if they were conducted under certain conditions. Those include washing vehicles over grassy or gravel areas, ensuring wash water doesn't go into the street, gutter or storm drain and leaving no soap stains on the ground.

The same rules apply to cars washed by their owners.

Cars can be washed with a solution that requires no water, but the concentrate costs $159 a gallon.

VDH Asks Some Simple Question About ObamaCare

If a program is said to be both superior and universal in providing excellent coverage for all, why would there be any exemptions whatsoever for anyone, especially for those who support or even helped pass the legislation?

If insurance companies would go broke selling life insurance of a reasonable cost to those with preexisting conditions, or affordable car insurance to those with numerous citations, why would they not do the same with Obamacare?

If the program was passed through coercion, noble lies, and subterfuge, and ushered in with the same, why would anyone believe it will not operate in the same spirit and practice?

Ouch: Jimmy Carter Questions Obama's Competence

I had in mind what Jimmy Carter, who ranks with James Buchanan and a few others as among America's worst and most inept presidents, said about Obama. When asked by Parade magazine how he would evaluate the Obama presidency so far, Carter said this:
He's done the best he could under the circumstances. His major accomplishment was Obamacare, and the implementation of it now is questionable at best.
This is, as Guy Benson points out, a withering indictment from Mr. Malaise. And on first blush, I thought, an unfair one, at least given the source. Who is Jimmy Carter to indict anyone on grounds of incompetence.

Retconning Recent History

Hey remember when Bush rejected the Kyoto Treaty despite Clinton signing it, lied about WMD in Iraq and made gas prices rise to reward his oil industry buddies? Well the left does.

Of course none of these events actually happened. But if enough reporters claim they did in books, that becomes official history.

Where Does Most Counterfeit US Currency Come From?

I would have guessed North Korea but that would be wrong.

At present, less than one hundredth of one percent (one in ten-thousand) of the hundred dollar bills out there are fake. Most of them are in Asia and South America.

...But the North Koreans are not the biggest supplier of this phony cash. That distinction goes to Peru (and to a lesser extent Colombia), where several criminal gangs have long produced ten to fifteen percent of the fake U.S. currency in circulation. The gangs are protected by drug lords and leftist rebel organizations. Because the counterfeiting operations were so small, they were difficult for the government to take down in Colombia.

On John Carson and Happiness

Even so, the droll superstar who found himself compared with Will Rogers and Mark Twain was acutely miserable off screen. "I don't have much of a talent for happiness," he once observed. "I never have. My mother saw to that." This sounds like pop-psych rationale, but Bushkin observed firsthand that the line was based in reality. At every turn, Carson's cold, domineering mother, Ruth, remained a monument of ingratitude. Nothing her son did merited applause. After Johnny sent his parents on an all-expenses-paid tour of Europe, for example, he called to ask about the highlights of their journey. Ruth gave him a five-word answer: "It's good to be home." When he sent her a mink coat, she promptly returned the gift because it was "too fancy for Nebraska." When she passed on, Johnny ad-libbed a brief epitaph: "The Wicked Witch is dead." Small wonder that he had difficulty with the women he loved but couldn't respect and the associates he needed but couldn't retain.

37 Apropos of nothing that has gone before, but I need a place to vent. My church recognized an event called the International Day of Prayer for Suffering Christians today. As part of that we watched a brief film about the attacks against Christians by radical Muslims in Northern Nigeria. As I watched I struggled with a range of intense emotion--compassion, sorrow and heartache but intertwined with all that was rage. I'm talking rage against the barbarians who slaughter innocents in the name of their vile moon god. But I felt even greater rage against the MSM that either ignores said savagery, or insists on calling it this meaningless thing called sectarian violence, or who persist in the myth that Muslims can only be described as victims of oppression, while in pretty much any incident you can name they are the oppressors over and over and over again. I also found myself struggling with rage against western governments that are blind to these injustices and refuse to say a word on behalf of these victims of violence. I'm sorry but I also found myself raging against a man who would say something so stupid and meaningless as the future does not belong to those who slant the prophet of Islam. That's it. Vent off--thanks for a safe place to do so. Back to regular programming.

If Hitler had not gone off the rails and gone into the Fuhrer-ing business, he probably could have made a decent living doing architectural illustrations.

Congress Needs To Pass The Employment  Non-Discrimination  Act

"Millions of LGBT Americans go to work every day fearing that, without any warning, they could lose their jobs -- not because of anything they've done, but simply because of who they are. It's offensive. It's wrong. And it needs to stop, because in the United States of America, who you are and who you love should never be a fireable offense."

89 Drudge links to a WSJ piece out tonight, "You Also Can't Keep Your Doctor," and it is a devastating testament to the horror that is ObamaCare. Every single Republican representative and senator should learn the details of this, and it should be all they speak about to any reporter anywhere that shoves a mic in front of their mouth. This woman's story should be made bigger than Sandra Fluke's ever was. Much bigger. It is truly the war on women, and not just with the stakes of free birth control pills, but with the stakes being life or death.

94 To the Left that WSJ story about the lady with stage 4 cancer losing her insurance because of Obamacare will not move them. I can predict their response -- we've already spent $1.2M on a white lady with stage 4 cancer? Why? That's so unfair! Think of all the school lunches we could have bought for Somali refugees. Obama's logic on "bending the curve" is all about end-of-life cost containment. And that means not spending money on people with stage 4 cancer. I do not expect Islamist groups to care about the anti-Christian posturing of Western governments. I am just perplexed by this new “doctrine of fairness.”

Besides the fact that fairness or being fair isn’t referenced once in the US Constitution or, thanks to a story in the WSJ some twenty years ago, there is no word for “fair” or “fairness” in many languages, we are now propelled into using fairness as our rudder.

While the idyllic notion of fairness is laudable, there really is no definition of fairness that is recognizable to all.  I doubt there is any case law to support a definition.  It instead becomes, much like beauty, “in the eye of the beholder.”

Of course, the Left also think that Golden Dawn in Greece trying to keep out non-Greeks are the worst people ever. Greeks voting to limit immigration and keep out non-Greeks from Greece - worst, most Hitler-like people ever. Blacks murdering and raping whites in a systematic campaign to cleanse southern Africa of white people? Reasonable response to the legacy of Apartheid and Colonization. I hate the Left.

199 I loved the 1337.

2. 1337
n. 1. Nestled between 1336 and 1338, 1337 is commonly known as a number, or for the more advanced; an "integer"
2. Often misused to satisfy a lamen's ego, the self-proclaimed 1337 will misuse the title, pretending to hold Xtr3m H4x0r capabilties while in fact masturbating to preteen beastiality at 2:00 AM with baggy eyes; anonymously hassling n00b's with better things to do than kill their babies over mindrot such as Everquest and Warcraft. See also "colon debris" and "queefstain"
"i t0tally pnwed u. u r so a n00b and i am so 1337"

7. 1337
1337. Originally used by hackers to avoid simple net searches that would turn up, for example, "I am an elite hacker".

Instead hackers would say "1 4|\/| 4|\| 31337 |-|4x0|2".

"31337" was later shortened to "1337".
Now 1337 used mainly by the gaming community (also in chatrooms) to mean an especially skilled player.1. 7|-|3 |=|31 15 93771|\|9 (|053 70 7|-|15 31337 0p3|24710|\|!

[ bold mine ] and: "Since March 2007 United Healthcare has paid $1.2 million to help keep me alive, ... " I see the Eeeeeevil Insurance companies keeping Ms. Sundby alive, and bleeding a bunch of money to do it. Yet, they're still able to stay in business. I suspect that much of the treatment for Ms. Sundby is experimental, or at least well-monitored, to help others ... a "free" test subject, with the successful treatments passed on to help others at lower cost, and the less-successful ones perhaps used on people who do not respond to the successful ones. ... but, ObamaCare is ending this. Aside from the fact that Ms. Sundby is now prevented from using the care she had, ... ObamaCare has "panels" ...

245 In re the banning of car washes in San Jose:

You can be sure that the city is looking for new things over which to write up the residents to raise cash via fines. Car washing is a slam dunk. Just have patrol cars rolling up and down the blocks every weekend afternoon. Easy money.

And why would San Jose be so desperate as to have to stoop to such measures?

Zero Hedge put up a list of lists of various boned American municipalities a few days ago. Cities ranked by erosion of tax base, by lack of cash on hand, etc.

One of the criteria by which they listed cities in trouble was by percentage of the general fund budget that goes to pay pensions for unionized public sector "workers". In San Jose, a staggering 30.9% of the money the city spends every year is on pensions.

When it gets that bad, and when the city gets to where it's shaking down people for washing cars in their own driveways, that's when the people who do NOT work in unionized city jobs start asking, "Why the fuck do I still live in this loser burg," and start making plans to relocate elsewhere.

He decided to submit himself to aggressive treatment, basically becoming a human guinea pig. He ended up surviving and living normally for over 25 years. So fucking retarded. Beyond stupid. Because, not only would such a thing

1) Open the floodgates to a raft of groundless lawsuits-- every time someone who happens to be gay is fired, for whatever reason, they can resort to this. The burden of proof, so to speak, will be on employers, who'll have to spend a shitload of money defending themselves against (or settling) countless frivolous lawsuits.

And therefore

2) Employers will much less likely to hire gay people in the first place!!! Instead of helping gay people retain jobs (fairly), this is more likely to discourage an employer from hiring a gay person in the first place.... because you know if you ever have to fire them, you might be facing a lawsuit.

Alas, this is true. I just hate, so much, that the left in America gets to be termed "liberal."

In this I envy the (fiscal) right-wing, in other parts of the world. They get the term (neo)liberal, which I consider much a more appropriate appellation. (Even though it's usually derogatory, used by leftists there, just as it's usually derogatory when we use it here.)

It just so happens that contemporary American conservatism is essentially, almost by definition, "liberal" (in the original political sense of the term)-- i.e. committed to conserving the values and freedoms enshrined in the American Constitution.

That a monstrosity like Obamacare can be called "liberal" offends me on a very deep linguistic/ semantic/ etymological/ historical level.

I've seen it inside my family.... with both a Black in law... and a Lesbian... both would cry discrimination when the problem was not their minority status... but stupidity... "

I agree, I've seen it too, and it's sad. It's dysfunctional thinking, that hurts the person in the grip of it.

Gay marriage etc. is one thing (whatever one may think about it). But this proposed legislation is a different thing-- like instituting an "affirmative action" type ethos (in effect self-segregation) for LGBT, like there is for blacks, in employment.

Which is just weird. For all the injustice or prejudice gays may have suffered in different ways in the past, when it comes to economics/ education/ employment etc., by and large that population is doing very well for themselves, seems to me. To their credit.

So in an arena or dimension where they are *least* victims (and least see themselves as victims, to their credit), the Obama administration wants to assign and encourage a sense of victimhood?

Stupid, as I said, but also so damaging and pernicious.

The slavers have been changing their name steadily since at least the 1870's.  Once, they were just proudly slavers and called themselves slavers.

Once the advocates of freedom made it too difficult to remain proudly slavers they started changing their name.  However, no matter what new name they pick people eventually catch on.  This is why they can no longer call themselves totalitarians, fascists, socialists, national socialists, communists, marxists, etc.  They tried liberals for awhile but people eventually figured that one out as well.  They will be progressives until people catch on one more time, and then they will change their name again.

In the end, every single one of those incarnations is just the slavers trying to return to their slave owing roots.

If the slavers think they can get away with it they will eventually call themselves conservatives and republicans as well.

Heh, wouldn't be surprised. After all, now that Obamacare's been "implemented," they can call anyone who favors its repeal a radical revolutionary, seeking to topple and destroy a sacred institution, a deep-rooted system, which organizes and orders 1/6 of our economy. What are you, nihilists and anarchists?

Exactly.  I was just reading info on the origins of fascism.  It seems there were a bunch of folks in western europe that tried to take over from the far left.  They couldn't get any momentum so they started taking ideas from the far right and eventually cooked up enough bullshit to fool the average bear with a synthesis of various crack-pottery.

In the end, slavers will name themselves anything, say anything, do anything, promise anything, and adapt in any manner required to start taking over ownership of other people's lives (they don't want all of your life, just the wealth producing part, which is your time, which they steal by controlling your choices.  I have learned to just skip all the bullshit and refer to entire sordid group as slavers no matter what they would prefer to be called).

So, what kinda guy was Ray Brown?

Posted by: jc at November 04, 2013 12:19 AM (PlzOe)

337 Ray Brown was one the most natural musicians who ever lived.
Unpretentious as hell. You would talk to him think you were talking to your average truck mechanic.
He spoke and played the truth.
And he had a perfect life. He lived his life unimpaired by physical complaints. Or, more accurately, if he had them, he never griped about them.
Then he did his last gig, went to sleep and did not wake up again.

We should all be so lucky.

There are some people in the world that even though I have never met them they somehow send out an aura of being truly gentlemen and decent human beings.  Is that a fair statement about Ray Brown?

Posted by: jc at November 04, 2013 12:33 AM (PlzOe)

339 I would not elevate him to sainthood. He was a man, as am I. We are imperfect.
But damn, could that guy play. And teach. He was exemplary, in the literal meaning of the word.

Being a musician is special. People pay you money to bring in to creation a thing that never was before. Maybe never will be ever again.

Posted by: jc at November 04, 2013 12:39 AM (PlzOe)

341 Stamina. Tone. Intonation. Time. Stamina.
And stamina.
Mostly stamina.
I mean, you got to play while 6 horn players take 4 choruses each, the piano player takes 3, then, you get to solo maybe for one chorus, 7 minutes in, and you have to have something left over to light up the room.

You got to be the strongest son of a bitch for miles to that, night after night.

Do you get to play all types of music you want to play?

Posted by: jc at November 04, 2013 01:00 AM (PlzOe)

347 Thanks, be to God. I did not make it into the top commentes for the week. And on another note: "I have been increasingly more troubled by Obama saying "the future does not belong to those that slander the prophet of Allah." I was always troubled by it, but now more so. I used to think Obama was an Atheist with ties to Islam. Now I wonder whether he was supported by big Muslim money every step of the way and really has much, much stronger ties to Islam that I thought. What about "The future does not belong to those that KILL the followers of Christ." He's NEVER said that!! Yes, he's a fine Christian, Mr. Obama. Nope :^(

348 "Do you get to play all types of music you want to play?"
That is a very good question, jc.
If I answered "yes" then I think you could stick a fork in me, as contentment is deadly in music.
I love all types of music, except that which bores me.
But a PROFESSIONAL plays all types of music competently and with inspiration. A Pro is not allowed to have biases about that which pays the bills.

Here is my thing. If I take the gig, I do my very best, which is usually pretty good. If I don't think I can do that, I decline the gig.

And if the gig turns out to be not so great, I remind myself: I took the gig. The blame is on me. Not the person who called me. I still will give 100%, but if the situation turns out to be not so good, it is on me, as I took the gig. I said yes.

I went thru customs earlier this year and the guy working customs (Federal Immigration agent) was constantly bitching about his job the whole time. I know he has a rough job, and it is hard to be cheerful at times. But, I looked at that guy and said "Hey, pal, this IS the job that you applied for. You worked your ass off to get this job. And now you have it."

So, shut up already...

Same thing with music.

357 Varg Vikernes ... Neo-Pagan / Satanic Black Metal: Wake Up Europe! "If you, dear European nationalists, really want to save Europe (as a biological term) you have to realise that the only thing to do is to cast aside all Christian and other international nonsense and embrace only the European (i. e. Pagan) values and ideals and if you like the European deities as well. If you work for Christianity in any way you work for the Jews. Plain and simple. If you are serious in your attempt to preserve anything European you better drop that Christian nonsense right away and embrace our European heritage! Period. Christianity is internationalism, so you cannot fight for both your nation (race) and Christianity. You have to choose. Christianity is partly based on Judaism, an Asian religion, and it is foreign to us. This is a fact that cannot be disputed, whether you like it or not. Christianity is the cause of all our problems, because the Christians (with their "holy" bible) allow the Jews (their "chosen people") to enter through our back doors and spread their foul Hebrew poison into our minds and wells." "The Christian slaves and other internationalists lead by their Jewish masters have tried and failed to destroy our European race and culture for 2000 years now. As long as there are true Europeans alive they will continue to fail, and our European blood makes sure that we can at any time revive the true European spirit and turn Europe into our Elysium again. We can do it in less than one generation, and they know it and they fear it more than anything else. A European Europe will ruin their plans for Jewish world domination. " "Christianity was created by some decadent and degenerated Romans as a tool of oppression, in the late Roman era, and it should be treated accordingly. It is like handcuffs to the mind and spirit and is nothing but destructive to mankind. In fact I don't really see Christianity as a religion. It is more like a spiritual plague, a mass psychosis, and it should first and foremost be treated as a problem to be solved by the medical science. Christianity is a diagnosis. It's like Islam and the other Asian religions, a HIV/AIDS of the spirit and mind." - Varg Vikernes, Metal Crypt E'Zine, May 10, 2005
