— Open Blogger Welcome to the Caturday version of the ONT. Forgive me for what I am about to do to you.
In football news, these two items cannot be ignored.
First, it looks like both Tomlin and the sideline official will be disciplined following this chickenshit move on the part of Tomlin. I'm a lifelong fan of Pittsburgh, but trash like this should not be tolerated.
And, ICYMI, this is noteworthy. Get your jollies now because this kind of fail isn't likely to repeat itself with one of the greatest football programs in our generation. They are the home team but, still, failure this epic deserves special mention.
Last week, the Florida Gators were beaten by Georgia-Southern by a score of 26-20. Worse, GSU won without ever completing a single pass. Could it get worse still? Yes. Yes it can. Did I mention that this was supposed to be a paid hit for the Gators? They paid $550k for the pleasure of this embarrassment.
From tweep Jamie Jones, this letter from NASA.
Dear Mr. JonesWe thank you for your interest in our work. Unfortunately though, we have no interest in your attached sketch entitled "A Breakthrough in Awesome Space Rockets, Now Give Me Some Money". We've long been aware of the science behind the reaction that occurs between Coke and Mentos, so believe us when we say that there's no practical use for it in our work - even if we did use "a shit load of Coke", as you so eloquently put it.
The rest can be found here. My new most-favorite vid on You Tube. Even a dog needs someone to talk to.
To anyone who hasn't yet tuned into the Showtime series Masters of Sex, you don't know what you are missing. The writing and acting are superb and, well, there's lots of boobies. Plus, they have the best intro on television right now.
From tweep JavaJoe comes this simply delightful Thanksgiving greeting to President Obama.
This ONT brought to you by pinups of the feral variety:

The low-light Karmann Ghia community lost a member that way last year in SoCal. His black 58 hit an SUV at a good rate of speed head on and the gas tank failed. A fire erupted and burned up the front half of that car plus killing the driver/owner.

That is --- until 4 minutes left in the 4th quarter----it ended abruptly.
Ya see, my brain-dead, neuron-depleted so-called "computer" in the Verizon FIOS TV DVR system just quits at the end of whatever time the game is pre-set to by the network---even if the network doesn't end the game at the pre-set time.

Not really. Their celebrity dies and they go on, often for decades. They're the ones whose obituaries produce one of two thoughts. Either 'never heard of them but supposedly they were famous once' or 'he was still alive?'
Kind of like lottery jackpot winners. Because a few have spectacular public flameouts, we begin to assume that this is the natural consequence of sudden immense wealth. But we forget that the number of jackpot winners who lead quiet lives far outnumber those whose downfall makes the news.

BTW, I did not realize there is a brand of toliet bowl cleaner named Kaboom!
I was Woodman's, a mega-supermarket (the sort of place that has an entire long aisle devoted solely to spaghetti sauce - I go there to get things I can't find anyplace else) and I saw the Kaboom! cleanser. Hmmm - Kaboom cereal and Kaboom toliet bowl cleaner.

My mom had that recommended to her by a friend. For some reason she thought it would come in a different container than the stuff we already have at the house. Her arthritis is making it hard for her to deal with that type of squeeze and twist top. But it's in the same package and no Kaboom for her.

My liberal boss gushed about the Masters of Sex program and how "progressive" Masters and Johnson were - which kind of wrecked it for me.
What I know about Masters and Johnson is that they shocked the nation by revealing that (supposedly) a very large percentage of straight men had had homosexual experiences. In fact, their stats were skewed because they had interviewed men who had spent time in prison. Their dishonesty paved the way for later lies, damned lies and statistics - like the one about 10% of the population being gay. It's really more like 3%.

Jumping Jehoshaphat!
Different suspension and materials is why.
Semis beat the crap out of asphalt. Ever see a section just before a stop that's all rippled up?
That's from the semi tires bouncing as they stop (maybe because of a light or no load or maybe not) pound the pavement and/or the weight can actually shift the asphalt a little as the brakes are applied.
IMO trucks should pay a lot more road taxes as they do over 50% of the damage.

_Giant_.
He kind of lost me in the half hour or so of that one. Elizabeth Taylor was sure pretty, though.
_Rebel_ just annoyed me, and while I remember watching _East of Eden_ I don't remember anything about it except the anti-German thing. Not sure what that says about his acting.

In the case of runners, some say running on asphalt or gravel on the shoulder is easier on one's feet than running on the sidewalk. In that case, you'd better be dressed in day-glo lime and pink from head to foot, because having feet in good condition isn't much of a comfort if you end up in traction because a driver couldn't see you.

"Died early. Was part of the Baby Boomer generation. The bad boy of a generation."
Er, James Dean was born in 1931. The oldest Boomers were born 15 years after he was and were still watching Howdy Doody and Captain Kangaroo when Dean died. He was no more of a Boomer than Elvis or Marilyn Monroe were.
You can blame the Boomers for a lot of shit, but the Dean cult is not one of them.

The thing about 'ettes is that girls in High School tend to get clique-ish and only talk to about 10% of the young hoodlums wasting four years of their life at political indoctrination camps. Which means that 90% of male-gendered types hit their 20's just trying to remember what it was even like to talk to a female -- just talk. Turns out, if you can avoid saying, "ewwww, girly stuff" about knitting, many of them can discuss life, honor, projects, politics, cars, sports, firearms, and booze -- y'know, important stuff -- just like anyone else.
At least the ones around here can. Then, again, at least 3/4 of the guys on other blogs are metrosexual-types who don't know jack about stuff.
And there's nothing that says "hot" like being accomplished [ http://tinyurl.com/q7698vt ].

Yeah its an actual series they are running. They made a les paul, a V, an explorer, an SG, and a 335 type thing. They originally were supposed to be gunmetal grey, but I think they are doing them in that desert tan, and they come with an olive drab case. I thought it was supposed be 100 of each, but I'm not sure. I ordered the frigging thing in april, and I guess they are just starting to deliver some.

Tea, petit fours, and an interdimensional, soul stealing portal ...
Posted by: Adriane... at December 01, 2013 02:07 AM (jdRXP)
The last batch of dishes (#four or #five) are in the dishwasher as of about 15 minutes ago. The counter on the sink side is reasonably clean. The counter on the cooktop side is still covered in junk, supplies, and detritus. They managed to get a bunch of chocolate on the floor that I have to get up before it migrates to carpet.
Just to illustrate the dealio -- a truffle is made by making a chocolate shell, which involves taking a block of white, dark, milk, or flavored chocolate and chopping into bits (uses a cutting board, sprays stuff everywhere). Then you pop that into a bowl and melt it (carefully) in the microwave [soften/stir/repeat]. Using a clean paintbrush, you paint the insides of the truffle molds (which are made from clear, stiff plastic about 1mm thick) with the chocolate and put the painted mold in the fridge to harden.
After the shell is done, you make up the filling -- usually ganache, but you can include nuts or caramel chips and whatnot (more bowls) -- and stuff it into the truffle (spoons). After the truffle is full, you paint more chocolate over the bottom to seal it up and cool it again to harden. When you're ready to make boxes of candy, you pop 'em out of the molds.

Dippin' things to make truffles -- they old; that's old school truffles. We in a new school, our generation, my generation.
Painting truffle molds lets you make stuff like this -- http://tinyurl.com/owgc8ss -- easily. The even newer method is to use silicon molds (still painted) so (a) you can just tug on the ends and have everything fall out, and (b) you can run the molds through the dishwasher.

You'd probably faint if you saw my kitchen six hours ago. Everything from powdered sugar to chocolate shavings and stuff piled in the sink, on the counters, open bottles of liqueurs.....
When we rebuilt the kitchen in 2004, one of the design considerations was that we could pretty much have an egg fight in it and be able to clean it up rapidly. The counters are granite slab; the backsplash is Corian; it's an undermount sink; the floor is resilient sheet vinyl and there is only one seam in the whole installation (and only I know where it is).....if I only had to haul crap out and wipe it down, I'd've been done hours ago. It's cycling all the stuff through the dishwasher and making it nice for next time that is all the work.

We've got an ice-cream maker (not the kind where you freeze the bowl, the kind with the built-in freezer) -- just bring some whole milk and/or cream.
By the way, if anyone has ever wondered, ice-cream makers and temporary generators are convenient, nifty, functional, and LOUD. As in, "you want several closed doors between you and the widget" loud, and you don't want it outside if your neighbors are touchy.

If you sip a cognac, the richness of your experience can expand to feeling the sunlight upon the grapes; if you listen to music, you can discern the fraction of a millisecond that the bassist lets the drummer get ahead of him; if you spend time with a beloved pet, you can heart the excitement in his voice about wanting a pet cat......oh, wait.....

Actually, true cognac (appellation d'origine controlee) is sufficiently limited in its production that the grapes probably were fit to make wine with -- and maybe even decent wine.

Posted by: Adriane... at December 01, 2013 04:09 AM (jdRXP)
Heh. When the BH and I were staying in Taveuni, Fiji, at the former Travelodge (bought out by a private concern), we'd hear "fumpth" regularly -- it was the geckos falling off the walls or ceiling. We loved it, 'cause it meant that they were on-the-prowl eating nasty buggies -- used to crack us up.
If you stayed out late (not as common as you might think, because "island"), you'd stagger back to your room and hit the light switch, and easily a half-dozen geckos would lose their footing and fall to the floor -- after which, they'd frantically attempt to get to cover [as if we were gecko predators]. So it'd be "fumpth, frdfrdfrdumpthf'dmpth/scurry, fumpth/scurryscurryscurry....fumpth, scurry." -- and then this weird silence, as if all the hidden geckos were holding their breath and thinking "you didn't hear that, did you?"
