Orson Scott Card: History's Greatest Monster
Because he has the same views on gay marriage that Barrack Obama did until just a year or two ago, all the bien pensant have agreed that Card is a horrible bigoted monster full of bigotry who must be driven out of all decent society. So no review of the movie, Ender's Game, is complete without a condemnation of the author himself.
Today comes Peter Debruge's review of Ender's Game. Debruge shows some restraint in waiting until the second paragraph before decrying Card's "anti-gay statements." So that's something, I guess. But then he circles back to kick Card again, writing:Though Card may have publicly revealed his own prejudices, the casting department has assembled a wonderfully diverse group of actors - male and female, they come in all colors, shapes and sizes - to serve alongside Ender, including not only Latino best friend Bean (Aramis Knight) but also a fresh set of rivals and bullies, led by the odd-looking Bonzo ("Hannah Montana's" Moises Arias). But of course it's not the "casting" department that's responsible for the ethnic diversity of Ender's Game. It's Card. All of those "wonderfully diverse" parts-Bean, Bonzo, Petra-were written as such by Card. I'm slightly surprised Debruge doesn't know that.
And Hollywood is wrapping itself up in knots trying to figure out the precisely perfect way to blacklist Card and all of his works. The squishy can't-we-all-get-along point of view is that of course his book should be boycotted but it's okay to see the movie (with the proper dispensations of course).
It's amusing to watch Hollywood types scramble about in a panicked effort to teach (tolerant, open-minded) progressives the best way to financially cripple an artist for holding political views they disapprove of. "No no, Hollywood is fine. We are the good people. The bad man is over there! Punish him for his heterodoxy!"
I can just see Dickey and others at The Wrap in the time of McCarthy, making lists of names of evil, evil communists to blacklist. "If you really want to hit Trumbo where it hurts, boycott Johnny Got His Gun and The Remarkable Andrew. That dirty commie still gets royalties from those works. But don't boycott the re-release of A Guy Named Joe! He won't earn cent one from that."
And Rachel Edidin in Orson Scott Card: Mentor, Friend, Bigot acknowledges all the support and kindness that Orson Scott Card showed her personally when she was a fledgling writer:
As a college student, I corresponded extensively with Orson Scott Card. For several years, I considered him a mentor and a friend. He was incredibly generous with his time and advice, and supportive of me as an aspiring fiction writer. I've had dinner at his home.
...The only time his beliefs came up in our conversations was a comment he made about fiction being a totally inappropriate venue for any kind of ideological proselytizing. I may not have agreed with his personal beliefs - I knew that he was an observant Mormon and at least somewhat politically conservative - but I respected and still respect the principle of not using fiction as a soap box
But because she's gay and Card committed an opinioncrime against gay marriage, he's now a hateful monster who must be burned.
Orson Scott Card is monstrously homophobic; he's racist; he advocates violence and lobbies against fundamental human rights and equates criticism of those stances with his own hate speech.I would never, ever suggest that a student seek out his advice. I will not pay to see Ender's Game; I will never buy another copy.
...Card is a monster who helped me learn to write, an author of hateful screed whose novels taught lonely, angry kids compassion and gave them their first sense of home. None of those things makes the others go away.
And note the goal post shifting going on here - not supporting gay marriage == homophobia == hating gays == racism (?) == advocating violence against gays == being a monster in human form.
And if you're curious, a picture of the vile fiend that walks the Earth under the name 'Orson Scott Card' can be found below the fold. If you can stand it - for some say his mere image alone can smother pets and deprive people of rights. You have been warned.
Full disclosure: I read Ender's Game about 13 years ago and was underwhelmed. I found Ender kind of a boring character and could see the twist coming about halfway through the book. I think it would have worked better as a short story.

Oil-rich Venezuela is chronically short of basic goods and medical supplies. Annual inflation is running officially at near 50 percent and the U.S. dollar now fetches more than seven times the official rate on the black market.

China and the Long Nuclear Game
Nuke 12 million Americans? The other 305 million will fully support trying to knock your population back below a billion before demanding your surrender before we cut it in half. Even th most passive parts of the nation can get quite bloody minded. The Yankees killed a few hundred thousand of my countrymen on a point of political order - so just be careful.
...Well, if nothing else, it looks like China isn't interested in nuking Dixie or most of the red states. Deer season is still a go.
Unless China wants to learn about full unrestricted Jacksonian fury the hard way, they better figure out a way to take out the South utterly and completely.

I read Ender's Game as a short story about 25 years ago. If I'm not mistaken, Card did at least three versions of it - short story, short novel, then huge cyclical thing with Speaker for the Dead. The short story was excellent.
I've read a lot of Card's fiction over the years, and I don't see any anti-gay or intolerant attitudes at all. He does address religion and spirituality more than most sci-fi authors, but he comes across as a very compassionate and reasonable guy.

What minorities do not understand...
When someone helps you... and you then call them a bigot... do you really think they will help OTHERS of your type?
Do you really think it helps your cause? Especially when your minority status is SELF IMPOSED????
How the F can anyone tell if you are a LESBIAN, unless you TELL them you are? How can they discriminate unless YOU set yourself apart???
It aint like you are Black... where your minority status us apparent from appearance....

TCM did another Japanese double feature way early this morning. First the 1965 Story of a Prostitute about a woman on a downward spiral of destruction being sent with others to service the needs of a Japanese army battalion fighting the Chinese in WWII. Very frank about things including how brutal the Japanese were. Though that grenade did have the longest fuse in cinema history, it went past 4 and I think even 10.
Then the 1948 Women of the Night about a woman who loses her reason to live when she finds her boyfriend is poking her younger sister. So ends up in a gang of street walkers in the bombed out city. The climax happens when the gang she belongs to finds a girl poaching their territory. So they are beating the girl and well our main character Fusako realizes the girl is her younger sister who is full of youthful bad girl arrogance until Fusako starts to beat her and explain all the horrors she is asking to suffer. Followed by Fusako realizing she is sick of this life also. So she and her sister decide to start new lives. And naturally some members of Fusako's old gang can't handle that so they start beating Fusako up. And its civil war inside the gang. Last shot is Fusako and her sister helping each other stagger away. And the camera lingers on a part of the building that is all that is left in the burned out lot, a stained glass window of the Virgin Mary.

Nature itself has endangered (and extincted) almost all species that ever existed...before Homo Sapiens even arrived.
Seriously, what has survived virtually unchanged since say the carboniferous? Cockroaches, ants and the common fly?

NJ's gun control laws are strict by Texas standards but average by NE standards.
In order to buy Rifles or shotguns you need a firearm ID card. In order to get a FID you have to pass a background check and pay $18.00.
You do not have to register your rifles or shotguns.
In order to buy a handgun you need to have an FID and file for a permit.
You will be background checked in order to receive the permit.
When you go to buy any weapon you have to pass an "instant" background check. "Instant" background checks are taking up to 3-4 weeks.
The vast overwhelming majority of crimes committed in NJ are committed by people who do not have valid FID's or permits.
So you know what NJ needs?

He's been pretty tame in the top headline posts.
Nothing I can see that's all that offensive. Tonight he tweeted a bit about how this unfolding plagiarism mini-scandal of Rand Paul's makes him look pretty silly, and that he needs to hire better help and/or get rid of the people he has that made him look like a clown here. (Because it's obviously not Paul himself who is doing the "plagiarism" -- Senators have staffers who write their speeches/op-eds for them, after taking dictation from the Senator about what points he wants to make.)
I completely agree, and I say that as someone who (as I noted on Twitter myself) has really come around hard on Rand Paul in recent months. The way he's conducted himself in the Senate has impressed me immensely, and at this point I'm actively trying to convince myself that he could be a winning GOP Presidential nominee. But crap like this is...a bad sign. Not because the kerfuffle itself is disqualifying, but because it suggests management problems. The Pauls in particular have a bad habit, as noted by political reporters for years, of being far too loyal to staffers of theirs who have embarrassed or disgraced themselves and their bosses. The last thing we need is a re-run of the Obama "nobody ever gets fired or faces consequences" style of management.

I hear this kind of grrr-arrrr, get 'em, fuck up their shit, nuke 'em till they glow boasting a lot whenever nuclear topics come up. Usually it comes from people who don't have the faintest fucking clue how radically America's nuclear arsenal has been cut back since the end of the Cold War. And how much further it's going to have been reduced by the time Obama and Hagel are done with it.
America now really is vulnerable to a disabling first strike, one that would make it difficult or impossible to land an equally lethal response on an adversary of the size and capabilities of the PRC.
Mutual assured destruction works as a strategic doctrine. If you have enough warheads, enough capable delivery systems, and enough hardened command and control to implement the counterforce component of MAD. If you don't have those things, that doctrine stops working.
That's why you hear this stuff coming out of the state media in the People's Republic: quite open discussions about their warheads on our foreheads right down to specific cities and particular weapons systems they would use to do it. They're not frightened of us. Not in our present condition.
You didn't hear discussions like that coming out of the state media in the USSR. They talked shit about the USA, constantly, but not nuclear war specifics. They certainly talked about that stuff in private and in detail in the Kremlin, but it wasn't on the ITAR-TASS newswires. Because the Soviets _were_ frightened of us, and at the time they had good reason to be.

Well I'm still a pretty big fan of Christie myself, but I agree with you that Rand Paul has, with a hiccup here and there, risen further and further in my estimation since he took office. Wasn't long ago I thought his awful "Civil Rights Act" gaffe was auto-disqualifying (and it still haunts me...such a tragically stupid unforced error), but he's just been so adept at hitting the right notes that I'm beginning to convince myself that it can be looked past.
What I appreciate the most about Paul fils is that he is pretty damn radical without being a "burn everything down" firebreather. Ted Cruz is sex to the base, but Paul has won credibility both from the activist base AND from the establishment types because he's a team player and apparently genuinely not a jerk behind closed doors. I thought he was pretty much the only figure in the GOP who came out of the shutdown looking like a winner -- the way he conducted himself during that mess was remarkably graceful.

The GOP has a supermajority in the House of Delegates (and is within striking distance of a majority in the State Senate for that matter), so Terry Mac's taxing ability will be limited. But don't kid yourself: Cooch is going down hard tomorrow, and the pisser is that he's probably going to take the GOP's AG candidate (who is running far ahead of him and would have otherwise won easily) down with him.

You go to war with the electorate you have, not the one you wish you had. It isn't going to help us to curse the fact that women voters in the state (even Republican ones) don't like the idea of compulsory transvaginal ultrasounds. It is what it is. The solution is not to support boneheaded legislation like that in the first place, or at the very least not to nominate the guy who spearheaded its passage through the state legislature.

All science "evolves" because more information becomes available. Unlike religion, science isn't based upon Revealed Truths.
And, IIRC, there was suspicion about Piltdown Man in the paleontology community right from the outset, but suspicion =/= certainty. And science was the domain of gentlemen back in the day, so such suspicions were often left unspoken for reason of propriety.

What are you talking about? The bill DID become law, pretty much. Governor McDonnell signed it after it was revised to make the "transvaginal" part optional -- but women are now forced to get an ultrasound if they want an abortion.
The truly boneheaded thing about the legislation is that it doesn't even fucking DO anything. You want to sacrifice political capital and potentially piss off moderates and swing voters? Then pass something like the recent Texas abortion bill, which actually accomplished something for the cause of life.

What I constantly advocate for are candidates who are the right fit for their state: you're not going to win statewide Virginia (or anywhere to the northeast of VA for that matter) with a candidate like Ken Cuccinelli.
If Cuccinelli were running in South Carolina I'd be all for him. But if Cuccinelli were running in South Carolina he'd be winning.

Cooch did that too, thru the State medical board. The clinic I have to drive past in Fairfax just closed down because of the cost of becoming hygienic and another one near me is teetering. The ultrasound has a purpose 1. if the abortionist has one, then their facility can be regulated like any other doctor; if they don't and send the women out to a specialist - then there is a delay and time for reflection which could save a life.
That life is worth more then few votes.

Fine then. I don't object to the law per se (the transvaginal part, that bugs me). I'm just saying that what is perfectly acceptable to the voters of Texas (who were hugely in favor of the abortion bill that Wendy Davis tried to stop) or Oklahoma ain't gonna fly in Virginia. And if people like Cuccinelli and the state legislature were going to burn their political capital on abortion, they would have been far better served to do something that actually made a difference, instead of burning the exact same amount of political goodwill for a comparatively minor thing that doesn't actually prevent a single abortion.

This is a counterfactual, so it's impossible to ever know. But I really, really doubt this is true. Bolling is ONE GUY, and while his behavior is turdish he remains just one guy. He isn't singlehandedly swinging this race by 7%. He isn't the reason the third party candidate is polling in the high single digits. That's because Cuccinelli is just plain unpopular in the state -- his favorable raiting is -14 right now. Worse than Terry MacAuliffe!
And Cuccinelli got plenty of support from the state GOP establishment, so I have no idea where that meme comes from. You do remember that the state GOP actually changed the nominating rules specifically to ensure that Cuccinelli would be the candidate (it was supposed to be a primary, and the state GOP changed it to a convention instead to ensure that Cooch didn't have to face off against the more moderate Bolling and run the risk of losing to him). Only after it became apparent that Cuccinelli was doomed in late September (with him down anywhere from 7-14%) did they start pulling resources from his campaign and shifting them to Obenshain's in order to salvage what they could.

How am I undermining anyone? I will vote for anyone who wins the GOP nomination for anything, regardless of my personal opinion of them or whether I think they're too conservative or too moderate (exception: fuck Jon Huntsman and the horse he rode in on). I will tell everyone else I know to vote for the GOP candidate, regardless of those considerations. That is, in fact, much more than many around here are willing to promise. (Look at Jean in this very thread, for example.)
Expressing my opinions here, in the comments section of a blog, is not "undermining" anything. Ace hammers on this all the time and he's got a point: I am not under any obligation to counterfeit my honest assessments of political realities (or my own personal political views for that matter), just to preserve some artificial 'happytalk' atmosphere. Unless I'm sitting around doing what some people here actually indulge in frequently (i.e. declaring "I would rather see Hillary win if the GOP nominates Chris Christie! I won't vote for him and neither should you!") I am not affecting anyone's vote. If I lived in VA I would happily vote for Cuccinelli, and tell everyone else to do so as well. Doesn't mean I think he's going to win tomorrow, or that I should have to pretend I think he will.

Which I routinely deride these days as "Commiefornia", but which within living memory was Reagan Country.
Even in the bluest parts of the state, I still think that Republican candidates who run on platforms of careful fiscal stewardship and law enforcement against violent crime can actually win once in a while.
But what does not work is running social conservatives who want to criminalize abortion and throw weed smokers in prison. Just not going to happen with this electorate in this state. For those who want to die on those particular hills, okay, go ahead, but they are going to die on those hills, make no mistake. Yet the mistake keeps getting made.
In 1998, the state GOP put up Dan Lungren as its candidate for Governor. A really solid balanced-budget law-and-order conservative. Also adamantly opposed to abortion and ready to jail people for burning a doobie.
I said at the time, "Jeez, let's not even waste the money holding the election. Just let Lungren concede to the Democrat immediately upon being nominated." That advice was correct.
Lungren went on to get a whopping 38% of the vote against Gray Davis, a candidate so wretchedly awful as to later go on to be the first Governor in CA state history to be successfully recalled.

They're upset but they're called LIV's for a reason. The last thing a LIV wants to do is admit to themselves that they were scammed, so if Team Obama can convince them that they weren't scammed, it was GOP intransigence, they'll eagerly eat that up to absolve themselves.
LIV's are the prime targets of fad diets and exercise gadgets that promise them quick weight loss without sacrifice. They cannot accept that their own habits (with the exception of those with medical conditions) are why they hate what they see in the mirror.
LIV's are only going to learn through a great deal of pain. Unfortunately the rain falls on the astute as well as the ignorant.

>>>The question is will you vote for him in the primary or convention? Remember, we've been told for years by many like you to hold our nose and vote for the electable guy in the primaries.
In Virginia? No, I wouldn't vote for Cuccinelli in a primary. (A guy with his views, but who had a much softer, non culture-warrior profile? Like Bob McDonnell? Absolutely would support him. But specifically Ken Cuccinelli? Nah.) I'd support him in the general election, though, because that's what you do: you suck it up and go with the guy your party chose, whether you think he was the best choice or not.
The reason I wouldn't have supported Cuccinelli in a primary is not because I disagree with his political positions. It's not like he's too conservative for me. (Heck, I'm not sure it's even possible for a candidate to be too conservative for me -- people here really don't seem to realize just how right-wing I am.) It would have been because he seemed like a near-guaranteed loser to me as a statewide candidate. Again, if I were voting in SC, I'd have no problem with supporting a guy like Cooch in the primary -- because I have no doubt he'd be able to win and actually act on his conservative beliefs. But there's no value whatsoever in nominating a wonderfully conservative guy if that guy is just going to get his ass kicked, because losing gubernatorial elections does nothing whatsoever to advance the cause of conservatism.

Races as used in the book's title did not mean races of people. It referred to species of plants and animals. What do mean when you ask people if they think evolution stopped 10,000 years ago? What point are you trying to make?
Posted by: eman at November 04, 2013 11:09 PM (AO9UG)
"Races of plants" sounds nonsensical. Care to show any examples of that usage?
As for Darwin, here's one context he used "race" in:
"At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilised races of man will almost certainly exterminate, and replace, the savage races throughout the world."
Pulled from a wiki page on "Darwin misquotes". Not to judge Darwin on the statement morally; but in context, savage races clearly refers to aboriginal/native human tribes on imperialized continents.

That's why you were all in for your support of Christine O'Donnel right?
What a dishonest turd.
Posted by: buzzion at November 04, 2013 09:03 PM (LI48c)
But you think he shouldn't be on the ballot, see its difficult to vote for a guy whose not on the ballot.
The question is will you vote for him in the primary or convention? Remember, we've been told for years by many like you to hold our nose and vote for the electable guy in the primaries. Why vote for the electable guy who even if he pays lip services to some of our positions, has no track record of actually getting anything done?

Let me say a word in JeffB's defense here. I can understand how he might irritate some people with his comments but I can't really recall him ever being gratuitously nasty to other commenters. But the same is not true in reverse.
And if I had to put money on the line, I would give more weight to JeffB's political predictions than many other people here. That doesn't mean I'm necessarily happy with his predicted outcomes, but I do think they have the property of being the most likely outcome. Just remember that accurately describing a situation is not the same thing as advocating for it.
For some reason many people on the blog have a quasi-mystical belief that if you state something here, somehow the probability of it happening is affected. But I'm pretty sure AoSHQ comments have about a 0.000% effect on actual election results. And not being allowed to state our actual thoughts on candidates or elections lest we 'tip the quantum balance' somehow makes for a boring and dreary blog.

1.) Hindsight is 20/20. Knowing what I know now about Bolling and the way he has behaved in the current campaign, obviously I have no love lost for him and he's disgraced himself. But in a world where none of that happened (and I didn't know he had it within him to be such a weasel), then yes, I would've voted for him over Cuccinelli.
2.) It really doesn't matter now, but he would have had much more than a mere 'outside chance' of winning, even with Terry Mac's huge money advantage. First of all, Bolling is a much better fundraiser than Cuccinelli (who has always been notably poor at this). Second of all, MacAuliffe isn't winning because of his money. He is already disliked by the Virginia electorate: he currently has a NEGATIVE SEVEN favorability rating. The only problem is...Cuccinelli is at -14. A totally bland, inoffensive GOP candidate -- literally, a "Generic Republican" -- would be beating MacAuliffe handily because people really just don't like him at all...they merely hate Cuccinelli more.
3.) I would have voted for the bastard lovespawn of Nelson Rockefeller, Mac Mathias, and Mike Castle for GOP governor just so long as it prevented Clintonite scum-spawn Terry MacAuliffe from winning the office. Stopping him is an end in itself.

I'm a writer. I'm housebound, so I can't go on tours or attend launching parties. My parents just died and left me more than enough to last the rest of my life. What with self-publishing, I can now live my dream of writing whatever I want without worrying that some offended twats will blacklist me. I can't be blacklisted because I'm totally on the fringe, literary-world-wise, and it doesn't matter if my books sell or not.
In twenty years I've never met a writer I liked. Female writers are the worst. Everything is oozing with estrogen. I recently read some moronic feminist piece about how male writers always make their female characters too beautiful. We need more homely female characters? What for?
The talentless clown who wrote it started out as a brunette with glasses, and after she became the darling of the East Coast literary world--since her debut novel was about a man's many affairs--she became a blonde, lost thirty pounds, and no longer wears glasses.
Thank God I'll never have to mingle with people like that again.

What a dishonest turd.
I assume you missed the part where I said the only thing I owe to the GOP is my vote come election day. If I'd lived in Delaware, you bet your sweet bippy I would've voted for O'Donnell. I'm under no compunction to refrain from expressing my opinion of a candidate here in a blog comments section, however. I shouldn't have to counterfeit my opinions for anyone. If I were a public figure or politician? Then it would be quite different: no way would it be okay for me to say stuff like that. But as a private citizen (not even a blogger, just some guy who comments in a blog) you have no right to say that I'm not being "supportive" unless I actually withhold my vote, which I never would do.
So please, don't call me a "dishonest turd."

LOL, even she agrees that was pathetic.
The rationalizations in the comments are priceless. The NYT liberal reader bubble is an impregnable force field. (Of course, any of them might be Obamabot/ OFA shills, who can tell.)
"This criticism reminds me of the IRS 'conspiracy' earlier this year, when it simply was work overload and frazzled agents."
"When it comes to criticism of this president one learns to discern the origin of the quibbling, and decides how valid it is (see Van Susteren/Fox News)."
"I do not believe it was the President's intent to mislead the American people. I believe he merely overlooked the problem of people losing policies that were, in the main, substandard."
Of course, dears, bless your heart.

Whitman and Fiorina ran afoul of the principle that it's really hard to transition to California politics from a business career.
Note that this even trips up Democrats. I mentioned the horrible Gray Davis previously. The guy Gray Davis had running against him in the Democratic primary that year was Al Checchi, a big-big-big money Democratic businessman. Who has not been heard from since.
The only people in CA who can enter top level politics from business have to have been in the entertainment business. It is the only acceptable route. See also: MURPHY, George; REAGAN, Ronald; and SCHWARZENEGGER, Arnold.

The question you must ask... is Obama Symptom? or Cause?
I think an Obama was inevitable... he is just the face of the culture we now have...
There are three things at play... Celebrity (being famous for being famous, ie, a media creation)... the buying off of the Voting Mob with Free Shit... and the Lefts idea that the Collective or group is more important than the Natural Rights of the individual.
Those are historic trends... that Obama puts a face on... but even without him, those trends would still have progressed...
We are seeing the EXACT scenario with Democracy that our Forefathers were so afraid would happen, that they gave us a Republic, instead of a Democracy.... too bad we morphed into said Democracy...

Um...are you from Virginia or the region? Cuccinelli calls himself that. His supporters do. Everyone does. Political reporters. GOP partisans. Everyone. It's been his nickname for as long as he's been in politics. I can well remember the "VOTE COOCH" fliers we handed out when I was canvassing for him in 2002 and 2003 during his State Senate campaigns in Fairfax.
It's weird, and amusing, that you think it's some sort of slur on him.

But he's going to lose. And he's going to lose in large part because of the way he branded himself after winning the AG race in 2009. It was a conscious decision on his part, and he's had a very hard time running away from it since then in light of the continued demographic changes of the state.

Please, please, please don't be jealous. My life has been a shambles for fifty-one years. Though I'm grateful to my parents for making sure I won't end up homeless, the cost was astronomical. They created a factory that produced six identical misfits who careen from one disaster to another, cut off from the world and unable to cope. Former drunks, druggies, and gobblers all.
My parents' deaths were the most appalling, horrible, mind-warping experiences I've ever had. One of the reasons I'm housebound is because I blew out my immune system from rage. The last year shaved another decade off my life, I'm sure. What do you do when your parents deny they have cancer and refuse to cooperate in their treatment BUT are terrified of dying?
I owe most of my situation to my brother, who controls my finances and has gotten us a 10 percent return on our investments even during the worst of the financial crisis. He's a genius.
Still, I wouldn't wish my life on anybody. I sent my memoir to the book guy here, but I have no idea if he ever covered it. I offered to send a copy to Ace. He never responded.
I'm done groveling for attention. I publish and forget. It's fucking great. I have a friend who's an officer in a foreign army that's pretty much an enemy of ours, but we're pals. He has a deeply mordant sense of humor.
"In fifty years you'll be recognized as a great author," he assures me.
So that's my goal. I hope to leave behind a body of work that'll make people feel guilty that they ignored me when I was alive.
That'll fix them!

Well it's both, really. Cuccinelli was a socially-conservative guy when he was a State Senator representing part of Fairfax, which is actually what made his victories in those three races so remarkable (he won a special election in 2002, his first general elex in 2003 -- I did gruntwork for his campaign on both of those -- and hung on by the skin of his teeth in 2007). Because Fairfarx isn't exactly a bastion of social conservatism. But Cooch was a hard campaigner, and did a great job of getting out there and connecting with damn near each and every voter in the district...and he's smart and wonky as hell, which sells well in Fairfax. So he was able to overcome his social conservatism -- and make no mistake, this fact was WELL remarked-upon by state politics mavens -- by soft-pedaling it and instead emphasizing fiscal and economic questions, particularly education and traffic matters (traffic is a huge fucking deal in Northern Virginia).
Come 2009 and the advent of the Tea Party, however, he clearly made a strategic decision to throw his lot in with the socially conservative wing of the state GOP (note that although the TP began as fiscally focused, the lines began to blur pretty quickly). After winning the state AG election -- and note he actually did slightly BETTER than Bolling did in the LG race -- he tacked hard towards the Tea Party/so-con wing in his political outreach and public appearances. These were in keeping with his prior beliefs -- Cooch isn't a hypocrite or anything, far from it -- but were aspects of his political persona that he had previously backburnered when running in Fairfax.

War on woman? That wasn't an issue until they fucking made it one. They create the issue, they occupy the field first, and then wait for the repubs to arrive while the left's asslickers iin the media snipe at them the whole way. This shit has to stop. We need to do the same, and if it means stooping to their level so fucking be it. If they lie, call them liars. Don't play their game when they create an issue. The media and the left are in cahoots at a sinister level. When they want to target someone they get a reporter to ask a question that is designed to trip the person up allowing the dems to create the issue.
When I saw cunty couric ask sarah palin what magazines she reads I yelled at the TV "don't do it", meaning she should have immediately went on the offensive and said something along the lines of "wtf, do you think we don't have books in alaska you elitist prick?" and stopped it right in it's tracks. It would have put couric on the defensive and blow her line of attack It was a setup, they wanted palin to fit their predetermined battlefield by showing she was indeed a chill billy by answering field and stream, guns and ammo, and fish gutting made easy, OR getting her to prove she was retard. This is how they work. Repubs better get with the program, start thinking faster on their feet, and start operating under the understanding that every fucking question the media asks of them is a setup designed to launch an "issue" and learn how to avoid it. Then the left takes all these issues, throws them in a bag for safe keeping so their ball lickers in the media can throw them all at repub candidates during debates and make them once again race to that same fucking battlefield .This is the reason why the media throws softball questions during interviews with dems, because they are geared to make the dem look reasonable and likeable and giving up no ground for the repubs to create an "issue" with, like they would anyway being the gutless turds most of them are. We need to stop playing on dem created battlefields and start creating our own, and if it takes creative out of the box thinking so be it, but it needs to happen. Answers to questions about anything the left likes to rally on needs coordinated tactical thinking. Lie, cheat, I don't give a fuck, because they sure don't. Its war.

For the next three years we must harass, thwart, mock and conduct constant wars of attrition against Obama and his minions. We MUST keep the on the defensive. Try to run out the clock so we can stop the corrosion in 2017 and start rebuilding.
No one (aside from Elizabeth Warren) who has any shot a the next presidency is anywhere near as toxic as Obama was. Even Hillary would be a "breath of fres air" in that she is merely a power-hungry narcissist; I don't think she has any progressive revolution fire in the belly any more. her presidency would be a boring wasteland of nepotism, backstabbing and bickering. But at least we'd be merely treading water as a nation -- not being actively undermined by diabolical crypto-communists.
Three more years. Three more years.
Let the campaign of narrative-harassment commence!

I have been wondering for a while now what this whole situation is going to be like when the right finally moves from complaining to actual action of some sort. Sadly, the actions that will be required will be uncomfortable and will have consequences. More than one price will have to be paid. Way too many decent people will lose some or all of the things they have worked hard to earn.Eventually though, freedom will be lost to those who wait too long to take action to prevent their own enslavement. I remain really curious how the future will unfold.

army that occupies that battle field first and awaits the enemy is at
ease, and the opposing army that has to race to the battlefield will be
fatigued. This is why we lose. The left occupies the battlefield. The
own the media. and they are agitators. They create "issues" and occupy
the battlefield first. The war on women, Romney's binders,, etc etc are
all examples of this. There are tons and tons of them.

suggestion -- don't accept any of the premises embedded above.
You have made a case for not playing the media game by their rules. OK, but it is also important to challenge the assumptions at a level below that. Who approves the media paychecks? Why? One doesn't have to know the answers to these questions to gain something by getting other people to engage their own paranoia about them.
There was a time when I knew that KMart was finished. It happened when I heard a combo Boat Person/KMart joke. Once a mystique or credibility dies there is nothing that can be done. Of course that may explain our situation today. It may be true that the Republican brand is so tarnished that there is nothing that can be done to save it.
However, the media/leftist brand is just as susceptible. The question is when will the right quit just taking it and seriously, unmercifully, and unrelently attack?

Make them AFRAID to come outside democrat strongholds, and even within the areas they think they're safe, we need to be there, hammering this issue.
And we need to start holding the media accountable, asking them, "Why didn't you ask them about this before they turned it into a bad law?"

I often wonder why we gave up the ground that we have a right to the full ownership of the time between our birth and our death and what we earn with that time.
How did it become true that the only people that actually own the time in their life are welfare recipients? Why did we stop challenging that belief?

In other words, make it mandatory for every pay stub to show every employee the total of amount of extra cost that goes along with their pay -- every single government mandate lowers your paycheck by some amount. Every employee should see the entire total on every check. And no bullshit such as "employers matching contribution" where the government gets to hide how much they really take.

I can understand -- though not condone -- someone demonizing someone they don't know but have been told doesn't share their groupthink. I cannot understand someone who demonizes someone with whom they've had a personal relationship and were treated well in that relationship.

It looks to be the flip side of the lefties who excuse people who have physically injured them based on politics. Wasn't there some reporter assaulted by third worlders who wrote an agonizing defense of their actions?
And here the opposite; A man who does a kindness, excoriated for holding the wrong ideas and being the wrong race, sex and of the wrong proclivities.

Good Morning, Horde. Today is Election Day. Get out there and vote if you haven't already done so.
In other news, I have a cash offer on my little house. It's a low offer and I will have to come up with the difference out of my pocket. This economy is scary, and the roll-out of the ACA is making it worse, so I have about decided it's better to take the offer than to keep the house and hope for improvement in home prices in the next 5 years.
A pox upon all those who kept this Regime in power the last election cycle.

"All of those "wonderfully diverse" parts-Bean, Bonzo, Petra-were written as such by Card. I'm slightly surprised Debruge doesn't know that."
I'm not surprised in the least. I doubt he has read anything outside 50 Shades of Grey and Cosmo at any point in the last 10 years.
Interestingly, Card's prequel has very ethnic belter families as the first heroes and victims in the war to come.

646In Ender's Game's review, they talked about a Gwen, who has equal to Harrison's character. Was there a female head guy, or was it just the Harrison character? Have they inserted an African American female into this story?!
--------------
Graff, Harrison Ford's character, has a black female assistant whose role appears to be to act as the person who keeps an eye on the psychological profiles of the kids. I can't remember whether she exists in the original novel.
Graff does talk with assistants in the novel, but my vague recollection (I read it once about 30 years ago) is that he primarily does it via the e-mails that are included at the start of each chapter. I don't remember if we actually see any of his assistants within the primary text of the novel.
