Guns & Ammo Editor Doesn't Understand the Second Amendment
In the December issue G&A technical editor Dick Metcalf supports regulating guns using this argument:
"I bring this up," Metcalf writes, "because way too many gun owners still believe that any regulation of the right to keep and bear arms is an infringement. The fact is that all Constitutional rights are regulated, always have been, and need to be."
"Many argue that any regulation at all is, by definition, an infringement. If that were true, then the authors of the Second Amendment themselves, should not have specified "well-regulated."
Meanwhile Bob Owens (now of Bearingarms.com) who I have a lot of respect for also doesn't seem to quite fully get the Second Amendment either:
As a shooting community, we seem to be huge on the latter half of the Second Amendment, and not so much on the first half. Find a Second Amendment rally anywhere, and you'll hear cries of "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed!" You won't hear many cries (if any) for "a well regulated militia being necessary for the security of a free state!" Do you ever wonder why that is? While I don't purport to speak for everyone, I have a hunch.I think it has to do with the uncomfortable fact that the first half of the Second Amendment suggests an obligation and a duty.
A "well regulated militia" would require people to sacrifice, to get in shape, learn small unit tactics, hike with heavy packs in deplorable weather conditions, give up modern conveniences, and generally suffer to become something that might pass as the sort of militia that would have a hope of surviving in today's fourth and fifth generation warfare.
Look I'm no constitutional professor but it should be pretty well understood these days that the term "well regulated" in the 18th century had the connotation of being well run and functioning rather than the modern meaning of being controlled and restricted by say the government.
Plus the first clause of the Second Amendment, "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state", should be seen as a motivational phrase providing a justification for the second clause without necessarily limiting it to that single purpose. So you could just as well re-phrase the 2A as "A well armed neighborhood watch being necessary to repel an invasion of zombies, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed," without changing existing gun rights or limiting gun ownership to only fighting the undead in an organized group.
And that's not just my interpretation - that's what the Supreme Court said in District of Columbia v. Heller on the very first page of the decision syllabus (italics mine):
- (1) The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home. Pp. 2-53.
- (a) The Amendment's prefatory clause announces a purpose, but does not limit or expand the scope of the second part, the operative clause. The operative clause's text and history demonstrate that it connotes an individual right to keep and bear arms. Pp. 2-22.
- (b) The prefatory clause comports with the Court's interpretation of the operative clause. The "militia" comprised all males physically capable of acting in concert for the common defense. The Antifederalists feared that the Federal Government would disarm the people in order to disable this citizens' militia, enabling a politicized standing army or a select militia to rule. The response was to deny Congress power to abridge the ancient right of individuals to keep and bear arms, so that the ideal of a citizens' militia would be preserved. Pp. 22-28.
- (c) The Court's interpretation is confirmed by analogous arms-bearing rights in state constitutions that preceded and immediately followed the Second Amendment. Pp. 28-30.
- (d) The Second Amendment's drafting history, while of dubious interpretive worth, reveals three state Second Amendment proposals that unequivocally referred to an individual right to bear arms. Pp. 30-32.
- (e) Interpretation of the Second Amendment by scholars, courts and legislators, from immediately after its ratification through the late 19th century also supports the Court's conclusion. Pp. 32-47.
- (f) None of the Court's precedents forecloses the Court's interpretation.
So basically your individual right to own gun has nothing to do with a "well regulated militia" - even if that was the original motivation for it. And anyone who claims they're currently connected is wrong. Period. Full stop.
It's rather dismaying to find that even professional writers in the gun community are still confused after Heller on what exactly the second amendment means.
Teacher Bullying and the Delphi Technique
Or why you'll be labeled a neo-Nazi if you have the temerity to complain about about your child's indoctrination.
A Pennsylvania father objected when his daughter's middle-school history teacher assigned a project about a New York Times article blaming Republicans for the government shutdown. His complaint apparently made him the target of an orchestrated response by faculty at Camp Hill Middle School, and an English teacher named Cydnee Cohen left a voicemail message for one of the parent's Facebook friends:"We're having some problems with a parent in our school district and on his page you are one of his friends.but I would like to know, some of it seems like he is a neo-nazi.call me."
The mutual friend sent a text (see screenshot) to Cohen, saying that Josh is the "furthest thing" from a neo-nazi, as he is Jewish. Cohen responded, "he is tea party right wing!"
Eh six of one half a dozen of the other.
La Tristesse: Europeans Sadly Discover Obama Isn't the Cool Euro-Guy They Always Dreamed Of
But just another American who's kind of a jerk.
For a long time, the U.S. president retained a much higher popularity on the other side of the Atlantic than that of the average European leader, even when his popularity collapsed among his own citizens. Obama resembled neither Angela Merkel nor Nicolas Sarkozy. Obama was a cool president.
This summer, the image caved in. The "Yes We Can" president became the "Yes We Scan" leader. In press cartoons, large ears pushed out. It's not the repulsion inspired by his predecessor, George W. Bush - not yet - but the charm is gone. Without Hillary Clinton's talents, Barack Obama is not cool, he is cold.
...Truth be told, Barack Obama has lost count of the friendly leaders he has offended. Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, is furious at his Iran policy and makes no bones about it in Washington. Also concerned about the opening to Iran, the Saudis are furious regarding America's Syrian policy and sulk profoundly under their white ghutrah. Dilma Rousseff, president of Brazil, is furious about having been bugged and canceled her visit to Washington.
Is actually proof that ethnic cleansing and expulsion work.
"Europe's social engineers of the last generation seem to have assumed that the "dark forces" of nationalism and chauvinism had been left behind. That was partly true; the horrors of the two world wars have made many (though far from all) Europeans unwilling to fight anymore on ethnic grounds. But the subsidence of ethnic nationalism in European politics was also a function of the mass ethnic cleansings and genocidal killings that left most European nation states fairly homogenous. There was no "German Question" in Polish or Czech politics because there were no more Germans in these countries. The "Jewish Question" largely faded in postwar Europe, in part because of revulsion against Nazism, but also because the Jews were gone. Europe's architects liked to believe that Europeans had transcended ethnic hatred, but much of Europe's postwar peace came from the success of ethnic hatred in creating homogenous countries."
-- Walter Russell Mead

Everyone is a Beautiful Special Snowflake These Days
Which is why 'selfies' and professional photo shoots are replacing the traditional cap and gown yearbook photo.
The Instagram generation, devoted to "selfies" and bombarded with digital imagery, is increasingly forgoing the time-honored cap-and-gown pose in front of the blue-mottled screen for portrayals more elaborate, personal and, of course, expensive..After the $300 session fee (and the optional $120 hair and makeup service), [Brooke] Daniels's minimum charge for prints and other products is $850. One Fairfax family dropped $7,000 recently for a deluxe senior shoot that included multiple prints of the daughter on canvas, suitable for filling a living-room wall.
[Chris] Steuble said his customers usually spend between $300 and $1,300, with the average being $700. He offers a "photo safari," during which he and the student's family set out to shoot in a range of settings, "some brick-and-
mortar, some nature, some urban street scenes," he said.
Because they look more attractive in groups.
(a) The visual system automatically computes ensemble representations of faces presented in a group, (b) individual members of the group are biased toward this ensemble average, and (c) average faces are attractive. Taken together, these phenomena suggest that individual faces will seem more attractive when presented in a group because they will appear more similar to the average group face, which is more attractive than group members' individual faces.
Basically the human male visual system gets confused when it sees more than one or two chick faces and ends up blending them together. Similarly to how mountain lions and bears often become confused as to the number and size of prey if you wave your hands and yell.

Strange trend at 70% in Virginia.
DEM Lt. Gov got 782,000 votes
Terry Mac got 728,000 nearly 60,000 LESS
Cuc has 767,000 versus 699,000 for the Rep Lt. Gov.
Mac isn't getting the straight line Dem vote...while Cucinelli is getting his and more...strange. Mac will still likely take it but it's going to be closer than we thought.

Dead wrong. European peace came from the US essientially making European armies superfluous.
Just a couple of months ago, Europeans were warning that the EU debt crisis could eventually lead to a European war. There are MASSIVE nationalist movements in every single European country.
The peace comes from the fact that they no longer have the weaponry to wage worlds wars.
You're welcome, Europe. It was our pleasure.

Just as the meaning of Revolution back then didn't mean what it does today. It meant to revolve, as in revolve around the sun to a new beginning. It was only after our Revolutionary war did the term take the meaning to revolt.

Actually, the meaning of the word "regulation" has changed enormously since the era in which the Constitution was set forth.
If you read the correspondence of Jefferson, you will find him describing long walks in the countryside as the best means of "regulation" of the body.
By which Jefferson meant, in effect, exercise.
A "well-regulated militia", in the context of bearing arms, would then be a militia who were competent to handle arms, as a result of privately owning and regularly exercising with said arms.

Threatened to take his little kids. They're adopted.
Roberts skirted the law when he adopted them. They're both by Irish mothers.
Irish law basically says, no adoptions to foreigners, including Americans.
The mothers traveled out of Ireland to give birth. This is legally dicey.
First order of business from any future GOP President has to be to quietly ask Roberts to resign. He's fatally compromised. Another wonderful legacy of the Bush bunch.

Well regulated means uniformity.

This "militia" was addressed in the main body of the Constitution for regular Army & Navy and the organized militia (primarily article 1, section
ALL the 'militia' were to be well-regulated, a uniformity of arms, whether a regular soldier or frontier farmer.
BUT, what do I know - I see that the 1st specifically refers to Congress, therefore it specifically forbade Congress from infringing on, say, religion, where the 2nd just says 'shall not be infringed' and everybody thinks that only applies to the Federal Government on Federal Territory, not States.
What Federal Territory was there in 1787?

Profound sympathies, justamom.
I tend to figure psychiatry, and especially child/adolescent psychiatry, is not all that better scientifically grounded than is phrenology.
Have you considered that there are other potential reasons for your daughter's self-harming impulses? Consider all possibilities. Plenty of times in more conventional medicine, the obvious diagnosis turns out to be wrong upon a second look.
Bullying hurts, but so do a lot of other things. Hidden substance abuse. Invisible relationship problems. Including even abuse by psychiatrists, to be frank.
There has been an ongoing high profile court case near where I live, in which a supposedly brilliant and stellar child psychiatrist at the top of his profession turns out to have been molesting boys sent to him, for decades on end. The court minutes are pretty damning about the level of professional standards in that field.

But I will argue that the Second Amendment specifically says ARMS, not Guns...
An Arm is a Military Weapon. One that is viable in Combat.
The base military Weapon of the world today, is the Semi Auto Assault Rifle... its pretty much the MINIMUM...
Yet in California? We can't have any militarily viable weapons... unless of course we are in the Police, or Hollywood....

I suggested alternate possibilities beyond just bullying. I don't want to rule out that bullying might well be the cause.
However, what makes modern bullying so acidly corrosive is SOCIAL MEDIA.
Which has the capability for every small humiliating adolescent slip to go global in nanoseconds. And for disorganized bullies to spontaneously organize.
I understand some yuppie parents of school-aged kids are now imposing "timeouts" on Facebook and the like. Frankly I suspect they'd have better adjusted kids if those timeouts lasted until age eighteen.
The list of social media induced teen suicides is startlingly extensive.

They were basically told, "Hey, any color you want so long as it's not white."
There just aren't enough of the white kids to go round. It's a reality that many would-be adoptive parents would prefer to, if they can't have kids who share their own genetics, have kids who at least look like they do.

I tried to make that same point in a FB debate the other day - here in Colorado, the most onerous part of the new regs is the private gun transfer background check requirement, which makes anyone who loans outside of a specific set of immediate family members (uncle yes, great uncle no, brother yes, SIL no), or very specific locations and activities (incorporated range, licensed hunting) a criminal (class 2 misdemeanor).
Our gambling laws have a simple definition that could have been appropriate here, "bone fide social relationship" - they got weirdly specific instead of using a simple definition, as is their wont.
If I invited a friend to my land, and we were plinking in an isolated, safe area, if I shot his gun, that would be a crime now.

Prayers for you and your daughter. I was bullied in Jr High (who wasn't?) and I made the mistake of not standing up for myself because of the mistaken idea that I would be "messing up" in school by fighting and would get in trouble. In retrospect, an energetic response to such bullying challenges would have done a world of good. As it was, my inaction just opened me up to be bullied by others.
My advice to my children has been to laugh bullying off, joke back to the bully and eventually become friends with them. If there is no other choice they certainly have the option of defending themselves and if a bully wants a fight, they should take it to them with great force, but not take the first swing.
Martial arts lessons help the self esteem and confidence and help in the case your daughter or son needs to take action. It usually doesn't take much.

One of my cousins adopted a Russian brother and sister when they were three and four respectively. Orphans.
They were absolutely unmanageable. Complete psychos who attacked the other kids at school, attacked their adoptive parents, and killed the family cat.
At one point my cousin wanted my eighty-year-old mother to tutor them, but my brother and I said that we'd be there too, with baseball bats, so it never happened.
The kids were MADE into psychos; it wasn't their fault, but they were still irredeemable. If I had to brain a psycho child to protect my elderly mother, I would.
After four years, my cousin sent them back to Russia.

Regarding the ethnic cleansing in Europe:
Apparently these European social engineers don't know their own history. Maybe they need to read Savage Continent: Europe in the Aftermath of WWII .
The killings based upon your family line didn't stop just because the war was officially over.

That was another horror story I read about Romanian orphans. Some girl they adopted was violent, too, but mostly stole stuff a lot. Just when the broken-hearted family were about to send her back to Romania she broke down, telling the family that in a Romanian orphanage you had to steal and fight; or else, starve.
Eastern Europe. Fun place.

Really, when I hear them say "junk government", you know what I think they're trying to say? "Junk" brings to mind "junkyard", like the old show "Sanford and Son", about an angry black man. So really, isn't this just another conservative codeword for "black", isn't this just another example of the racist opposition to a black president?

Ceausescu got his Praetorian Guard from the orphanages. They were the guys who ran over the crowds with tanks and machine-gunned them from the air with helicopters. But the people won anyway.
Ever see Nicholai and Elena's trial and execution? It's classic. They're both saying over and over, "This isn't happening." After they're found guilty and taken out to be shot, these mass-murdering pigs are screeching and begging. "How can you do this to us?" they ask.
The firing squad began shooting as soon as they saw them. No order had to be given. Fully automatic AKs opened up for several seconds. Nicholai fell into this amazing contortionist's posture, lying on his back with his legs shaped like a "W," his heels up by his shoulders. Elena lay with her ankles crossed, looking really relaxed. Both corpses' eyes were open.
Doctors checked to see if they were alive by tapping their eyeballs with their fingertips, and then they loaded them into these bizarre, narrow, Transylvanian coffins and posed with them in some confusion.
It's amazing footage. Somewhere online it's up with subtitles in English. All world leaders should see it, not that it would do any good.
"Won't happen to ME! I'm special!"

I can't speak to the accuracy, but a recent article 'claimed' the Roberts illegally adopted 2 Irish orphans via a South American country. If this is the case, it would be a big enough scandal (via the LSM blowing it up) to give 'rats the excuse to demand Robert's resignation.
At the very least, it would prove a major distraction for the whole session of the SC, and the O-care ruling.
Is it true? Can't say... would Obaka use dumpster divers to get dirt on anybody in his way? Hell yes.

You'd have to get all the Class 3 paperwork in order, meet the explosives storage requirements (which probably would exclude urban/suburban storage sites for the big stuff), but its doable.
There are owned cannon, tanks, and jet fighters. I don't know if anyone owns a surface combatant. That's a pretty high maintenance item

If only there was some sort of place where young men, say 16-18, spent large amounts to time during the year. A place with rooms where they could gather and learn about this stuff.
Secondly, he's wrong. Marksmanship, a bit of fieldcraft, D&C, first aid, and some basic squad tactics would be very easy to teach and more than enough for most young men. The idea is not to make professional soldiers but to give enough of the basics that you're not starting from scratch down the line.

lets not all get the vapors over Christy
he sucked up to the JEF and poured all that sweet sweet federal money over blue counties
when the crypt keeper died, instead of giving a year appointment to someone who could run for the job, he gave it to a no name place holder until he could hold an election at the earliest opportunity. He basically gave the job to Booker. See, now Booker, who always had aspirations for higher office, is out of the way. His way. Booker would not be running for governor
The Dems, prolly in a quid pro quo move, ran Barbara Buono, a nobody from Middlesex County. Made her feel good, but she was never gonna win
He won the way the democrats win
by dropping millions of taxpayer dollars over blue voters
he will be a shoo in for POTUS (not)
even in the exit polls today, voters, who had just voted for him by a huge margin, said they would rather vote for Hillary for POTUS than him. By a wide margin
He knows how to get elected in NJ. But they wont vote for him for POTUS. And the press loves him now. They loved McCain too. And Romney

I never said I wouldnt vote for Cruz. Dont put words in my mouth. Just he wont win shit. What does he give us? We need to fucking win to do anything. Christie has at least shown he can campaign and get some minorities on board. He's more effective as a campaigner than Romney ever was who had to quit after his first term cause he would lose. As long as he focuses on fiscal issues, I really would climb on board. I seriously dont think he'd burn good will by going after guns either.

the only reason any minorities at all voted for Christy is because he eliminated Booker as competition? By all but giving him that Senate seat?
Why would he do that? Because he knew he would have a much tougher race with Booker in it because of identity politics

"Look I'm no constitutional professor but it should be pretty well understood these days that the term "well regulated" in the 18th century had the connotation of being well run and functioning rather than the modern meaning of being controlled and restricted by say the government."
Then why did the Constitution explicitly grant Congress the power to regulate the militia? (While reserving to States the power to enact the regulations as well as select the officers.)
Wthout such controls and restrictions by the government, what would be the difference between a militia and a bandit gang?
And the biggest question, how exactly do you determine a militia, or anything else, is "well run and functioning" without an external set of standards to measure their performance, and where do these standards come from?

Blackstone remarked on precisely that in his famous Commentaries On The Laws Of England thus codifying it as part of English Common Law.

Ask your jaggoff what body of law he bases his opinion on. The US legal system adopted huge swaths of English common law...including an intrinsic right of self defense.

Governor Christie is well-positioned against potential opponents if he seeks re-election next year, but Newark Mayor Cory Booker would make it a race, according to a Qunnipiac University poll released today.
from 2012
Booker also has not said if he will run, but he reached out to party leaders from around the state at the Democratic National Convention last month to lay a foundation if he does enter the race. He also has a national fund-raising operation that could compete with the amounts Christie could raise, and is seen as a favorite of Washington Democrats who might want to see Christie defeated.

OK, speaking of silly names, we had local election here today, mail in ballot only, which, of course, means voting for people I have never heard of ...
There was a silly tax amendment, basically the teacher's union campaigning to put my gold in their pockets codified into state constitution, so that was easy choice. "Reform" fiscal conservative group put up slate of school board candidates who had been called out by an 2nd hand acquaintance retired school teacher on FB as "dangerous extremists", so that was easy too once I identified the names ...
Last remaining race was for City Council Ward in my wanna-be prog suburb - a Dan Smith, with no background to speak of, vs a middle aged white woman named "Shakti", I shit you not ... easy choice there ... that was what was on the ballot - one name - Shakti ... her proudest accomplishment was being on some kind of diversity committee ...

Anyone that thinks Christy won't get the full John "Maverick" McCain treatment or the Mitt "severe conservative" Romney treatment by the full court press mainstream media in the 2016 election is a fucking idiot...
The media has consistently painted left of center republicans (that they just love to have on Sunday morning tv talkshows to bash fellow republicans) as extreme conservatives in elections for the past 20-30 years. If you haven't wised up to this fact yet there ain't no hope for ya...
... the only chance is of course to run a man or woman that actually fights this narrative not embraces it at every turn and to support this man or woman to the hilt with every means available. This is something that establishment republicans can't seem to grasp.

There are private, legally owned tanks, artillery pieces, machine guns, rockets launchers, and fighter planes. There's nothing in current Federal arms law that would prevent private ownership of large surface combatants either.
The only thing current ATF enforced Federal law punts on explicitly is WMD like NBC weapons. There's explicit language directing you to check with DOE regarding nuclear weapons.
Last time I read the Federal arms law cover to cover, it was silent on bio/chem-weapons, but that was a while ago

Even that is permitted, but you have to abide by some fairly strict storage requirements regarding bunker construction, stand-off distances from inhabited areas, etc. to ensure safe storage. The storage requirements are not unreasonable. No worse than any explosive manufacturer needs to abide by.
If you live in an urban condo or the burbs, you'd need to have your ammo storage facility elsewhere.

If that shit is what the GOP now stands for, I repeat, I am going to stay home on Election Day from now on. Seriously. I can't be bothered to go vote for that. Want to win? Great. Don't count on my vote as you build your electoral models.

So you're deciding that voting for the guy that will cut your throat with a razor blade is better than voting for the one who'll cut it with a hacksaw blade are your only two choices?

Anybody that is proud of staying home for Romney should be really happy with TFG, since they got the result they desired and received ...
How is tea party supposed to replace GOP when their advocates are too pure to be sullied by base politics? If only their candidates, who are routinely rejected by voters, were somehow more pure, or, is it, supported by the evil GOP, who is supposed to go away, the voters wouldn't reject them any more? The tea party started as grassroots, libertarian style politics but was co-opted by the SoCons - if you want intellectual purity, feel free to go sit in a room, all by yourself, because that's the only way to get it. In other words, leave already ... we are beholden to your unpopular views, and, then, you withhold your votes anyway ...

Well, goofy cruz, I would be happy to vote for whomever is the nominee, and it's a little early to tell who will be running. We have problems with getting good candidates, across the board. By the time the primaries reach my state, fait accompli ... but since all that matters is our quadrennial choice for temporary king, I will try to address your question.
I would be happy to support Cruz over Christie in a primary, if it came to that, I think Cruz is a pretty awesome candidate - smart, understands the constitution and the republic, Hispanic appeal, etc. I am still peeved at Christie for the post-Sandy hugging of TFG, since I believe that's what pretty much finally swung the election, but if he is nominee I will proudly vote for him - that's politics - you build a coalition and get as much as you can get while yielding as little as possible to achieve victory. It will be better then voting for weasel McCain for sure!
Regardless, if we are wedged with unpopular social issues by Dems again, we will lose again. Purity over politics means you always lose the politics, because success requires compromises. If your goal is purity, you will get it, and, you will be alone in the wilderness ...
The oddly difficult to follow and attacking nature of your attempt to put me on the spot today for declaration of sides and a preferred candidate for an election three years from now, kinda makes my point ...

If you don't mind I would like to slightly modify your suggestion and call it "Lie Like Obama Day."
It would be like April Fools Day on steroids. Everyone would have an obligation to lie all day.
One could end every single utterance all day with "period" no matter how nonsensical it makes the statement or question. For example, "honey, where's the toilet paper?, period." Or when a sales clerk sez "Have a nice day" one could respond with "Have a nice day period."
The sillier the day gets the better. Once the mockery reaches bone marrow level there will be much rejoicing except by the popular people's front.

Understand weft, and your point is well stated. I guess my response would be that you have a better shot at getting what you want by supporting those who you agree with in a greater amount then those that you don't, as a whole, and withholding votes, or supporting third parties, which is absolutely your right, tends to support those whom with you disagree more ...
In a two party system such as ours, which is due to the winner take all structure of our federal system, the role of third parties is to pull the larger ones around in the overlapping bell curves that constitute our voters. Yes, parties change, and maybe it is time they should, as I am disenchanted myself, but still enfranchised with no intent of giving that up ...
Dude, at least you are consistent, keep abiding ...

I found a lady that is coming to get this year's crop. She's going to make some lemon pepper jelly and a few other things; I'll get a portion. All my friends and relatives nearby have quarts of lemon juice from previous years. So do I. I burned out one electric juicer already.
Southern MS has a marginal climate for citrus. One nearby area is known as Orange Grove, but I doubt you can find a single orange tree there any more. One hard freeze can kill the tree. The lemon tree, in fact, got real sick one winter and half of it came close to dying.

I still don't know what the fuck the governor of Wyoming was thinking when he told the northern Colorado counties to go pound sand, that he had no interest in annexing them.
Talk about creating an energy superpower state! A giant missed opportunity.
Note also with regard to northern California secessionism, that you have to lump in southern Oregon. Look up the "State of Jefferson" some time. There is some history and tradition which must be respected.

Anna, interesting. But I doubt they were in it commercially as was once the case in Orange Grove. It takes about 5-6 years for the trees to begin bearing significant fruit; a hard freeze comes along every 5-6 years here so I imagine it happens a lot more frequently in Natchez.

I don't know when this got started.
Decades ago, I used to get in trouble at night. Sometimes involving the police.
Then at lunch in the daytime, I would hear hand-wringing anxious urban liberals talking about what a _bad idea_ it was to have Vietnam veterans on the police force. Because they all just knew, despite not actually knowing any Vietnam vets themsleves, that those vets were all ticking time bombs of violence waiting to explode. As bullshit Hollywood movies of the era told them.
Whereas my real-world experience with genuine VN vets who had gone from green to blue was that they were awesome police officers. Not least because nothing rattled them. Totally calm in all situations.
After you have survived Khe Sanh, civilian stateside police work is a vacation.

On one hand, soldiers don't have many places to go after you've spent 8 years hunting Taliban in the Hindu Kush.
The other side of the coin is that the existing cops should retrain that mindset. But what happens is all the guys running around wearing 5.11 pants want to play GI Joe so instead the training and mindset of kill or be killed flows the wrong way. It's reached epidemic proportions in our LE now.
Every SWAT/EST/ERT team is loaded with idiot cowboys who want to be door kickers instead of thoughtful citizens with a responsibility.

The Congress shall have Power . . .

The commerce clause is another where they have mis-defined the word "regulate" which when used to "regulate" trade between the several states, meant to keep regular. some of the states had imposed duties or taxes on the other states products that were being transported through the state to a port, and this was restricting trade, so the idea was the federal government would not allow restrictions like this to keep trade "regular" or going unrestricted.

I don't disagree that the snipers need training. I disagree that the police need snipers.
IMO, militarization of the police forces have led to no knock raids and people getting needlessly killed, including a few police officers. When you spend a lot of money building a super seekret elite SWAT team you start looking for excuses to use them (get your money's worth). In other words, when your only tool is a hammer...
Police forces should pay more attention to the teachings of Robert Peel and less to the teachings of Robert Rogers.

Republicans don't generally win in blowouts, so a phony Libertarian can, with some underhanded support from the Democrat Party, steal enough votes from the Repug to hand victory to the Democrat, no matter how much that Democrat sucks.
We need to ponder how this particular tactic can be countered. Education on the true nature of the phony Libertarian can help, but we also need to learn to counter the GOP establishment, which would ultimately rather see the worst possible liberal win over the best possible conservative.

people who do that are angels. its so thankless. i am sorry her kitty is sick. every time one of them is hurt or ill i am beside myself. its easier if they will let you help them. sometimes they wont. I had a very injured female who was pregnant who would come and cry and eat the food here but would not let me catch or help her. the vet i worked with came over and we both cried. But she survived. eventually she learned to trust me enough that when i returned from my sisters wedding and sat on the porch she forgot she was feral and jumped in my lap and head-bonked my chin to let me know how much she missed me.
grim reminded me that when feral cats disappear it means they are eaten by coyotes out here. She thought i came back from the dead or a very bad misadventure! Coothie met her today, we call her Lulu.
I purposely didnt follow the elections. i dont trust the results. the world has turned very dark so i have decided to turn my face towards the light and find solace in small warm things, my friends, and my farm. At the rate this is all going enjoying every little bit of happiness and committing it to memory may be what it takes to get us through what is ahead. Its not going to get any easier. But friends and small pleasures lighten the burden. I cant fix my country but i can make sure the sick old wild tom under the porch gets soft food he can eat without teeth.

I only see one problem with your carefully laid scheme, and that is when America falls I believe it will be more like the fall of Rome, ushering in a dark age due to there not being another strong arm to pick up the burden of civilization, rather than the fall of Britain when America was there to carry on. We've been carrying the world for a little over a half century now, and we can probably go on for a while longer, but what happens when we are no longer able/willing to carry that weight?
And with that joyful note, it's back to the salt mines!

That bit by Metcalf really pissed me off when my copy of G&A came in the mail last week. The 2nd amendment talks about THE MILITIA being well regulated, not guns being well regulated. The only regulations on guns that would promote the well regulation of the militia would be regulations requiring militia age males to keep and/or bear some substantial minimum of firepower. The idea that well regulation of the militia could be used to restrict the keeping and bearing of arms, when the second half of the amendment explicitly says otherwise, is grossly untenable.

All other arguments that do not address this fact concerning the intent of the writers of the 2nd amendment and bill of rights are mere distractions that do not address this central point. IOW it does not matter what the common definition of "regulated" means now as compared to then because the second part of the amendment clearly and unequivocally states that "the right of the people to bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Period! And it doesn't take a Constitutional expert to understand that. Do not fall for the distractions as the foolish editor of Guns & Ammo did which will certainly dearly cost his publication in cancellations.
Posted by: Rob H at November 06, 2013 06:13 AM (qx1UM)
People want words to mean what they want them to mean. Definitions of words and the intent of the Founders don't really count with such folks.
Sophistry. It's a mental disease, not a philosophy.
The Americans who always chant 'shall not be infringed,' have a better clue than most wrt the Second Amendment. Because that was the intent of the Founders. Yes, the original intent was that every comminutiy, from villages to cities were to have their own 'well-regulated' militia - separate from, and not affiliated with - the US military. That meant getting going to drills and training under a local commandant. The only exceptions were those men who were too old or too young or those who held positions within the community that were critical to the community, e.g. trash collection and utilities.
It also meant buying and maintaining your own uniforms, weapons and gear, unless you were unable to afford them. Then, the city or village bought them for you. Those weapons and gear were also to be kept in your homes - in addition to your personal weapons, if any.
It also meant that every village and town had their own armories, however large or small or well-stocked. Those armories were not subject to state or federal regulations or control.
Constitutional construction. Get some.
Posted by: Warren Bonesteel at November 06, 2013 06:48 AM (klGLB)
And one other little question to top it off. How can you or anyone else claim that the 2nd amendment alone in the Bill of Rights actually restricts the right of the individual citizen? The Bill of Rights in context lays out its intent right in the document where it says:
"THE Conventions of a number of the States, having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, will best ensure the beneficent ends of its institution."
The Bill was written to restrict or limit federal power not that of individuals or the states and yet it appears that only in the case of the 2nd amendment is there an argument that it somehow limits an individual right? How is this so in the context of the documents stated intent? And where else in the Bill of Rights found a restriction limiting of the rights of the states or the individual that would support the argument that the 2nd amendment does stipulate such a restriction?
Sophistry? Yea some folks who want to read into a document restrictions that clearly are not that are masters at it.
Posted by: Rob H at November 06, 2013 07:37 AM (qx1UM)
And thus the US Code even provides or an unregulated militia:
(a) The militia of the United States consists of all
able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as
provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who
are, or who have made a declaration of intention to
become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens
of the United States who are members of the National Guard. (b) The classes of the militia are - (1) the organized militia, which consists of the
National Guard and the Naval Militia; and (2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the
members of the militia who are not members of the
National Guard or theNaval Militia.
How can a militia be "regulated" as some define the word to
now when it is not even "organized"?
