Jokes Are No Laughing Matter Comrade
The "five rules of survival in Socialism" are instructional. "1. Do not think. 2. If you must think, do not speak. 3. If you think and speak, refrain from writing. 4. If you must think, speak and write, then do not sign charters. 5. In case you think, speak up, write and sign, then do not be surprised by what happens to you.
The "seven wonders of Communism" makes a point about the economy. Accordingly, in Communism, 1. All had work. 2. Even though all had a job, no one did anything. 3. Even if none of us has done anything useful, the "State Plan" was filled above 100%. 4. Although the "Plan" has been "over fulfilled", you could not buy anything. 5. Even if nothing was offered for sale, everybody had all he needed. 6. Even if everybody had everything he needed, all were stealing. 7. Although everybody was stealing, nothing was ever discovered to be missing.
At the Yalta Conference, Churchill finds Stalin and his KGB boss Beria in an intensive conversation. "What are you discussing? - We will kill 30 million Poles and a mailman. - Why the mailman?" Stalin turns to Beria "I have told you that all they will care for is the mailman?"

Welcoming Our New Insect Overlords And Their Beneficent Plans For You
And no you can't keep your current insurance plan because They Know Better.
...Overblown outrage is the stock and trade of conservative politics these days.
But here's what conservatives won't tell you, lest it undermine their theatrics: Many insurance plans are shutting down because they don't meet the higher bar of quality benefits required under Obamacare, and of those people who lose access to their plans, many will pay less and all will have better and more comprehensive options.
And this is absolutely nothing new:
Back in 1993, during the fight over HillaryCare, Mrs. Clinton explained Democratic reasoning to then-House GOP Leader Denny Hastert. If Americans are allowed too much discretion over how they spend their health-care dollars, Mrs. Clinton said, "We just think people will be too focused on saving money and they won't get the care for their children and themselves that they need . . .
"The money has to go to the federal government because the federal government will spend that money better."
#Biden2016: Joe Biden Congratulates Wrong Guy in Boston Mayor Race
When Marty Walsh won the Boston mayor's race, Vice President Joe Biden was quick to pick up the phone to congratulate him. But, there was a problem. The Marty Walsh who Biden had on the other end of the phone wasn't the Marty Walsh who had been elected to succeed longtime Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.
...That Marty Walsh said before he could explain the mix-up, Biden launched into his congratulations, saying "Marty, you did it, you son of a gun."
Meet the New Sandinista Mayor of New York
And his lesbian wife.
No amateur psychoanalysis of Bill de Blasio is complete without mentioning his domineering lesbian wife, Chirlane McCray (and yes, even after he adopted his mother's maiden name, she still wouldn't take his name). Prior to her marriage to the doughboy from Cambridge, McCray was best known for a 1979 Essence article in which she spoke about her experiences as a homosexual woman of color. De Blasio's account of how he wooed her reads like one of Heartiste's "Beta of the Month" horror stories as reinterpreted by Dostoevsky's Underground Man, as he steadfastly refused to take no for an answer

"Comment Noir" for the Moron Horde-
7:36 PM 11/6/2013(dim the lights, imagine a soulful sax solo in the background):
She was a contortionist. I met her at a Mobius strip club. She was trying to make both ends meet, but her personality had an odd twist. I thought the relationship would go on forever, but it was one-sided. I had to draw the line somewhere. Eventually, she started to lose her edge. At the end, she really came unglued.

True story:
Went to England when I was about 20. First night out in London, my friends and I went to a pub, where we proceeded to discover (belatedly), that English ales were not 3.2 beer.
An Irishman down the bar heard my (lack of) accent and staggered over, yelling expletives about how America sucks and how he hates America and how he was going to kick my ass. All of this in an incomprehensible Irish accent.
I'm half in the bag from strong English beer, and have no idea of the rules for bar fights in London. But that doesn't matter, because Paddy swings at me, misses, falls down, and stays on the ground for a good 15 seconds. The bartender clearly doesn't give a rat's ass, and I am flabbergasted.
So Paddy finally gets up, looks at me, says, "I'll buy you a pint," and staggers back to his bar stool.

All this bitching all day about TFG and the ACA.
Y'all keep missing the point. And this is not a joke, it's something to wrap your minds around and accept as fact....
These fuck-ups are ALL features, not bugs. The whole point was to pass the law, not to make it work. It has to fail in a spectacular way, so people again look to someone, anyone, who can fix this mess.
And there will be the government, waiting with their pre-written bill to make America into a single payer socialist paradise.
All these so-called mistakes and outrages are just necessary steps in the journey.

Dinkins was WAAAAYYY over his head and even his platoon of advisers couldn't help as NYC requires a proactive Mayor just to stay even with the craziness.
Everything went bad during Dinkins tenure. He's the Jimmy Carter of Mayors.
From folks say, DeBlasio is smarter and therefore more dangerous and devious. The only good thing is that he's not a rich man like Bloomberg so this is the best he'll ever probably do.

Giuliani was the perfect mayor, because he made the city incredibly safe (don't believe the current numbers: it's already getting worse), but was able to preserve the feel of the neighborhoods and the "grittiness" of the city.
Bloomberg just turned it into his image of a perfect city...and it sucks.

In 1983 he legally changed his name to Warren de Blasio-Wilhelm.
By the time he appeared on the public stage in 1990, he was using the name Bill de Blasio as he explained he had been called "Bill" or "Billy" in his personal life. He did not legally change over to this new name until 2002, when the discrepancy was noted during an election.

De Blasio is a creature of the municipal unions.
He will probably give every union a sweet heart deal and generous raises in the next go round.
Fun fact: The NYPD pays more for it's "retired" police force than it's active police force.
It pays 4.7 billion for their retired comprising over 46,000 retirees and 4.3 billion for it 36,000 active police force.

Unless this is all faux outrage, meant to drum up the groundswell of real anger necessary to effect change....

It was attempted, but didn't work. The upside of metric is everything is decimalized. But, the basis of a month is the moon. There's no getting around 12 cycles to a solar year. You could simply make it 10 months to a year, but it mucks up the lunar cycle. When they tried the metric time time, they didn't go that route and kept 12 months. Defeated the purpose of the concept. Either way, it's not a winner.

Well yeah, you could. But without a complete system based on 10, it kind of defeats the purpose.of metric. A lot of mucking around for little gain. IIRC, they tried to change everything, including seconds, but couldn't get it all to fit, without ignoring the solar/lunar thing.
One thing about metric that always bugged me... why the hell isn't there an equivalent to a foot? You only have a mm, a cm... then a metre?! What the hell? There ought to be a "decimetre".

You know that the single-payer bill is already written, right? It's sitting in some senator's cabinet, ready- made for when the time is right.
Get there first. With a viable alterative plan, and a determined opposition party to push for it.

US = 60hz
Most of the rest of the world = 50 hz
Also, generated power on the power lines isn't exactly the standard I would use for generating precise frequencies. There are electronic timer circuits that do that job much, much better. Besides, most of todays electric clocks are electronic anyway, even the ones with analog dials, so their timers are electronic frequency generators (quartz crystals, fr'instance).

After two-thirds of the subscriber base announced they were leaving, and the publisher's board of directors shit their collective pants.
Everyone has a set of rules they live by. Torque's Fifth Rule says, "Whenever anyone says it's not about the money, it's about the money." This was about the money.
Kinda makes you wonder what could be accomplished if conservatives in general had anything like the courage of the G&A readership when it comes to consumer boycotts.
In off moments, I imagine the wave of total panic and fear that would come over thousands of liberal media executives if half the country basically said, "Nah. No more. Done with this. There is. And it is often marked on meter sticks. But it is rarely used in practice. When I took high-school physics, we worked in the mks system: meters, kilograms, seconds. This was before Canada went metric. mks was dead easy to use, and the numbers were pretty intuitive. But Canada adopted the SI metric units, or cgs, centimeters, grams, seconds. So we wound up with crazy-ass units like the "Pascal" for pressure. Instead of something intuitively understandable like kg/m2 for pressure, which is pretty readily convertible to psi, we fill our tires to 250 kPa, (roughly = 35 psi).
And they should never have metricated the land survey or highway systems. That was plain-ass stupid. The entire country was surveyed in miles and feet. And on rods, chains, and moosedicks, too. Well, I may have made that last one up.

Most people use the "pick a system" method for measurements today.
I work in chemical process, most people I talk to assume we use gallons / liters. We run everything by pounds per hour because it's easier to do the mole ratio calcs.
The odd part is we use the old British
M = 1,000
MM = 1,000,000
Not sure if this is a legacy of the company or of the operating system

Best design by far is the Robertson square socket, invented in Canada, eh? Stronger than the Torx, and easier to manufacture, too. And a new Robertson bit will wedge tightly into a new Robertson screwhead, so that the screw stays on the driver, making one-handed screw starting practical. Boat builders and fine woodworkers love 'em.

Newtons are metric. And they are a measurment of force. Weight is the force of gravity acting on a mass. Pounds are a measurement for mass or weight. When you are dealing with physics you denote the difference with and m or f after the Lb. So its lbm for mass and lbf for force. lbf would be what your weight is measured in.

If you look at labels on things, there's some big-ass bar code and a bunch of microscopic print that's grey on orange or some other bullshit combination....thus showing that the end of civilization is nigh: things for computers to read are printed so that people can easily see them but make scanners unnecessarily large; things for people to read are printed (by computers) with such bad contrast and small type that they can't be read by human eyes.

You could color-code your sockets. Use the resistor color code as your basis, and use the colors in the same sequence. Take the 3/8 set of inch-standard sockets, for example. The smallest one of that series is normally 3/8, so put a black stripe on it. 7/16 gets a brown stripe, 1/2 gets a red stripe, 9/16 orange, 5/8 yellow, 11/16 green, 3/4 blue, 13/16 gray. White is left over. Similar scheme for the 1/4 drive and 1/2" drive, and for the ends of wrenches.

I know what you mean. We've found here that use of a true Hg gauge is more reliable than even the 'certified' vacuum gauges, when doing calibrations for our lowest range instruments.

Mercury barometers and pressure gauges have been used for centuries. When the weather forecast says "thirty point oh-two inches" that's the height of the mercury column in a barometer glass. And the blood pressure gauges used by doctors worked that way, too. I remember having my blood pressure taken on those. The vapor pressure of mercury is very tiny at normal temperatures. Standard atmospheric pressure at sea level is trifle more than 30" of mercury, and over 30 feet of water. Probably why water barometers never caught on.
You can also build a mercury diffusion pump to pump a vessel down to a very high vacuum indeed.

I have worked with High vacuum systems for over 20 years and have never seen a mercury high vac diffusion pump. The primary diffusion pump can only knock molecules down the system to secondary pump. How does a Mercury molecule do that more efficiently than silicone molecule? Bigger and heavier yes but less abundant and way more dangerous. Think football team with 10 guys vs 20 a great team takes 10 minutes to get to10^-11 but without Mercury it takes them 20 minutes but without the hated Packers.

She also thinks he is a fool, becuase, I Quote, "he is pushing the socialist agenda too fast. The best of the Republic are dissuased/attacked as they are not in the vested moneyed interests of the powerful. Those that they cannot control, must be destroyed. Think the way Sarah Palin, love or hate her, was attacked-- by her own political party no less.
The current GOP will choose another blue state RINO in 16', and try and placate the conservatives with another VP slot, but it won't make a difference in the world at this point. The FSA is beyond saturation and new comers fill the ranks daily.
