Study: If You Own a Gun, You're a Racist

There's so much stupid in this 'scientific' study published in PLOS ONE that I don't even know where to start. Here's just one nugget in the tard sandwich:

Racism and guns go together.

That's the finding of an international study released Thursday that says the two are linked. More specifically, odds are greater that a racist white American also keeps a gun at home and opposes gun control regulations.

The conclusion wasn't too surprising for researchers at Australia's Monash University and Britain's Manchester University, which sought to better understand American gun culture.

"There had already been research showing that blacks are more likely to be shot, so we thought there must be something happening between the concept of being black and some whites wanting guns," Monash researcher Kerry O'Brien said in an email to the Daily News.

He also found that political leanings and geography play a part into firearm ownership.

On Journalistic Black Holes

As far as investigating the dark side of the Major Issues, there's a critically important concept that students of journalism are rarely taught.  It's easy to find any number of targets to write about in capitalist societies with an open press.  But totalitarian governments are journalistic black holes.  Journalists can tickle their self-righteous neurocircuitry every day (and many do), by exposing easy-to-find faults in democratic societies.  But beyond their event horizon is the bigger story that often remains untold as it occurs-the horrific deaths of millions in totalitarian regimes like the former Soviet Union, Communist China, North Korea and, yes, Saddam Hussein's Iraq.  That's why, when Robert Conquest was asked whether he wanted to retitle his updated The Great Terror, about the Soviet purges, his answer was: Yes, how about I Told You So, You Fucking Fools?

The FDA Moves to Ban Trans-Fats

Luckily they're exempting the small amounts of naturally occurring trans-fats or else we'd all become vegans by government fiat.

"Citing growing health concerns about trans fat, the FDA today proposed measures to eliminate it from the U.S. food supply. While trans fat can still be used, the new measures now place the burden on food processors to justify the inclusion of it in a food product as experts have maintained that there is no safe level of consumption and no health benefits. Since 2006, the amount of trans far eaten by the average American has declined from 4.5g per serving to less than 1g as restaurants and the food industry have reduced their use of it. There will be a 60 day public comment period for the new proposal."

Oh Noes: Mexican Coke is Moving to High-Fructose Corn Syrup

Executives at Coca-Cola in Latin America decided to make the switch after the Mexican government approved a tax of one peso on every liter of soda sold.

But not to worry - they'll still make a cane sugar version for export to the US. As long as the FDA allows it.

Living the Potemkin Life

The Intertunnel loves stuff like this. They treat the discovery of such work online as akin to unsealing Tutankhamen's tomb. While I've never done it myself, I've seen it done lots of times. Landscapers for tony houses in Massachusetts routinely split granite in this fashion to make outdoor steps while I was working alongside them doing something else. Feathers and wedges. Of course, there's one gigantic bit of handwaving involved with the video. Someone's got to drill those holes, and drilling holes in granite is no picnic.  Most use an air hammer. The wedge and feather work is the easy part, if more fun to film.

...If you do things for yourself, Intertunnel viewers are quick to praise it, generally, unless it's self-defense, of course; but there's a limit to what's sensible, or even possible to do on your own, and you rub up against that limit pretty fast. It's ridiculous to poop in a hole in the ground with a solar panel on the roof over your head and talk about sustainability. Solar panels aren't made in a shed, and you don't swap last fall's rhubarb crop for them. Your hammer came from Home Depot, not a forge in the back yard. And money made right next to a smokestack and spent with you out in the landscape is still the same kind of money.

Duck Dynasty Producers: A Little Less Jesus Please or It Might Upset the Muslims

When the producers of Duck Dynasty asked the stars to stop saying "in Jesus' name" during prayers because it might offend Muslims, Phil Robertson stood his ground and gave an eye-opening response.

"So they would just have me saying, 'Thank you Lord for the food, thank you for loving us. Amen.' So I said, 'Why would you cut out 'In Jesus' name?' They said, 'Well those editors are probably doing that. They just think that they don't want to offend some of the Muslims or something.'"

Robertson says he had a conversation with the producers, and the objections to Jesus' name stopped.

"I said, let's see now." Robertson went on, "I said, 'what year is it?'" And the editor finally answered, "2012? (the time the conversation took place, apparently).

Robertson then said, "2012 A.D. Anno Domini. The year of our Lord. I said, 'you Hollywood cats are counting time from Jesus, just like I am. I would think that of all the people who walked the planet Earth, if we've all decided in America here to count time by just one of 'em, Jesus of Galilee, I just don't think it would hurt to throw his name in there from time to time."

How To Blow $14.8 Billion Dollars in 12 Easy Steps

First get at least $14.8 billion dollars. Then join the Brunei royal family.

Prince Jefri Bolkiah is the younger brother of the Sultan of Brunei, and he is believed to have blown $14.8 billion on a series of follies including grotesque mansions; enormous collections of sportscars; haremsful of exotic prostitutes kept on standby at home and abroad; fleets of jets; musesumsworth of gaudy gems; private football tutelage from NFL greats for his pampered son; private concerts by Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston (the former in a purpose-built, single-use stadium); and more (and more).

...According to Fortune, when Hakeem wanted to learn football, Jefri imported N.F.L. stars Joe Montana and Herschel Walker to Brunei, at a cost of seven figures each, to teach him the game. Hakeem and his friends showed up in brand-new uniforms, the gargantuan prince weighing 300 pounds, trailed by a valet and guarded by a state security force. Hakeem was not able to catch the ball, so a teammate would hand it to him, and he would then shuffle down the field for an easy touchdown, because no one was allowed to tackle a prince. When Hakeem turned 18, his father gave him $1 billion as a birthday present, according to one of Zaman's affidavits.

45 Free health care for artists is part of Obama's super-awesome plan to boost the economy. See, previously, these would-be economic dynamos had to toil at places like Target to get their health care by day, and then suffer for their art in off-hours. Now that they won't have to work at Target, in theory, they will unleash their creativity upon our moribund economy. In practice, their artwork is most likely just unnecessary enough that most customers won't want to pay their inflated prices. So they will wind up back at Target just to put food on the table.

137 45 Free health care for artists is part of Obama's super-awesome plan to boost the economy.

Re: Trans Fats

The trans label is put on after oils have been hydrogenated to make a multi-unsat oil into a saturated oil. 288 I don't really think LDS people would be offended at you crossing yourself. They believe in the power of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross too. Most wouldn't be offended, but it would be a distraction. That said, when I was volunteering at our local art museum and we did the preview of the religious art exhibit a couple of years ago, the curator was apologetic about one of the displays, which was a Catholic-style Christ on the Crucifix. So I think some of the folks around here do find that symbology troubling.

Son, we live in a world that has stadiums, and those stadiums have to be filled by men with teams. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lieutenant Weinberg? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Martin and you curse the Dolphins. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know, that Martin's hazing while tragic, probably saved tackles. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves games! You don't want the truth, because deep down in places you don't talk about at the office watercooler on Mondays, you want me on that sideline. You need me on that sideline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very entertainment that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it! I would rather you just said "thank you", and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a helmet, and run a post pattern. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to! 307 I don't really think LDS people would be offended at you crossing yourself. They believe in the power of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross too.

Not really. Mormonism is structurally a prophetic religion. Jesus's sacrifice does mean something, but only to the degree that Daniel's sacrifice means something - it's a martyrdom with salvation at the end.

Mormonism's main faith-claim, distinguishing it from Christianity and Islam, is the post-resurrection appearances and visions - including those in the New World.

And that is why there was no cross in the Tabernacle Choir when I went there in 2003 or so.

328 The trans label is put on after oils have been hydrogenated to make a multi-unsat oil into a saturated oil. Due to the Trans fat scare, almost all of the food industry is moving away from Trans fat to palm oils. You still get the same level of saturated fats, and very similar cooking characteristics - but they were never hydrogenated therefore magically they are better for you. Posted by: PMRich at November 07, 2013 11:21 PM (KDUNf) Trans-fats are mono-unsaturated fats, i.e. hydrocarbon chains with a single double bond, the rest being single bonds. Difference can be seen here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cis–trans_isomerism Natural mono-unsaturated fats are "cis" and generally healthy. Trans-fats are "trans" and are made by hydrogenating polyunsaturated fats.

347 Through His suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane and by giving His life on the cross—that is, by performing the Atonement —Jesus Christ saves us from our sins (1 Peter 2:21) as we follow Him. Because of the Atonement, you can be forgiven of your sins when you sincerely repent (Book of Mormon, Mosiah 26:30). There seems to be IMO an unfortunately debate about whether it's appropriate to have the corpus on Jesus on the cross with some Protestants sects saying "No" because he's no longer there. The cross is central to the faith. You can't have the resurrection without the cross. Religious art for hundreds and hundreds of years has contained pictures of Jesus on the cross. If people are offended by it maybe they just need to not look at that art. I was once at an interfaith clergy gathering at an Episcopal Church. The rector came up to someone who was going to preach and said "You should take off your pectoral cross. Someone might be offended ." Their response: "I am a Christian minister I'm not taking it off." I agreed with them. This was 20 years ago and there were no Muslims in that small Upstate NY town, but the Rabbi who was standing there said. "I'm certainly not offended at Rev. Smith wearing his cross. Will we next have to remove Christian art from museums because someone is offended? I realize you're being sensitive and caring, but in other cases this stuff just goes too far.

360 Y-Not- getting offended at a display of religious art that includes crucifixes? Well, jeez, such sensitive souls would have a heart attack if they ever visited Italy, because you can't walk 3 feet there without seeing a Catholic church with Catholic art - Christ on the cross, the Virgin Mary, saints, etc. I can see making a public prayer non-denominational, but having to apologize for art - when much of the greatest art in the Western world is specifically Roman Catholic? I don't get all offended and put out when I see a Chagall painting with flying rabbis or a Hindu stature of a god with 6 arms. It's the idea that just seeing or being exposed to art from a faith you don't personally hold yourself that drives the militant atheists to insist that a cross that has been in a park for 100 years be taken down. That's being ridiculously oversensitive.

News to me that no-one talks about these books, but then I'm (barely) under 40. I grew up on newspaper-articles about the Dead Sea Scrolls where, indeed, several of those "extra" books were found.

At least "Ecclesiasticus" / Ben Sira was even cited as Scripture in Talmud. And 1 Maccabees ranks among the better histories of Antiochus IV Epiphanes and the rebellion against his tyranny.

So it's not like there is a Big Papist Conspiracy to hide the "apocrypha". They're not Torah, exactly, but then neither is Esther :^P

The FDA Moves to Ban Trans-Fats

Forget going John Galt, I think it's time to go Edgar Friendly.

You see, according to *Cacteau's* plan. *I'm* the enemy. Because I like to think, I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech, freedom of choice. I'm the kind of guy who would sit in the greasy spoon and think "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the big rack of Barbecued spare ribs with the side order of gravy fries?" I *want* high cholesterol. I want to eat bacon, butter and buckets of cheese alright? I want to smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinatti in a non-smoking section. I wanna run around naked with green jell-o all over my body reading a Playboy magazine. Why? Because maybe I feel the need to okay pal? I've *seen* the future, you know what it is. It's made by a 47 year-old virgin in gray pajamas soaking in a bubble bath, drinking a broccoli milkshake and thinking "I'm an Oscar-Meyer Wiener". You wanna live on top, you gotta live Cacteau's way. What he wants, when he wants, how he wants. Your other option: come down here, maybe starve to death.

I'm not sure I like the name "Cacteau," though.  Can anyone think of another name we can use for the Leader?

Be ye merciful and ye shall obtain mercy; forgive, and ye shall be forgiven; as ye do, so shall it be given unto you; as ye give, so shall it be given unto you; as ye judge, so shall ye be judged; as ye are kind to others, so shall God be kind to you; with what measure ye mete, with the same shall it be measured to you again.

Actually, the Catholics' "extra" books were taken from the Jewish canon as it existed at the time. It's just that the Jews dumped a bunch of them into the sea at Jamnia. . .

Protestants and Catholics agree on the extent of the New Testament, although admittedly I consider 1 Clement a serious contender for inclusion. (Pity that it was written in the second generation! You really do have to read this book.)

I love my Arisaka, but with my old eyes and the battlefield sights (sighted in at 300 meters) I can't hit shit with it. I'm hoping the scope fixes that.

I saw a scene for the first Hidden being shot. It was on Las Palmas off Hollywood Blvd. late at night. I was there with a friend to browse the news stand and the theater across the way was done as the strip joint in the movie. We hung around for a while to see if anything interesting would happen but there seemed to be a long delay in setting up the shot. I noticed an attractive woman in an ankle length fake fur coat, which made me more inclined to wait.

Months later the same friend and I were seeing the movie and had a Holy Shit! moment when it got to that scene, with Claudia Christian in the dress with cleavage in the rear. The next time I saw her in person was several years later when I was visiting the Babylonian Productions stages and she was shooting the scene where she going to use the Great Machine to do a news broadcast to the galaxy. There was some difficulty because the set had been designed for John Schuck and she was a lot shorter. They worked out a sequence where the camera would pull in tighter so a guy could slip in a platform for her to stand on without appearing to have suddenly gotten taller. I think they spent half the day trying to get a minute in the can.

615 The after midnight crew on AoS.... here's a question:

My CC permit expired in Oct.  I got the renewal in before the deadline hit so I didn't have to do the jumping jacks through the flaming hoops to get it renewed, just was late on the paperwork.

So from now until my new permit arrives in the mail (up to 90 days), I can't CC.  I called the sheriff's dept and they said "Just open carry."

God I love where I live.

However, I also teach at a university.  And you can already imagine that scenario.  So should I test it?  Or just carry my Emerson blade?  There's that little patriot inside me that says "carry the sig open on your hip and see what happens."

And then there's the 'I've seen this movie' part of me that says "Not a good plan.  Dude.  Trust me on this one."

I'm leaning toward the patriot rebel side.

Oh, and I'm not teaching next spring.  I'm going to go run drugs or guns or dabble in human trafficking.  Teaching is for suckers.  Learned that the hard way.  The whole 'giving back' thing is fine until you're eating ramen noodles with the juniors you're teaching.

K-12 pays a fortune with bennies and a pension.  University teaching?  not so much.  And those little bastards? 14-18 age group, yeah... No.  Not this old drill instructor.  Bad plan.

Married a woman smarter than me.

We were both NCOs in the military, then both defense contractors raking in over $230K  a year between us.  My contract ended in 2010, ever since I've been raking leaves and grading undergrad homework.  Is what it is.

sure, rub it in.

I do love teaching, I really do.  And here's some math:

A TTP (tenured track professor) gets $5800 for teaching a 3 credit hour class (that's a class that meets twice a week for 1 hour and 15 minutes) for 15 students.  For each class.  So teach 4 of those per semester. Not too bad right?

Me?  I have 92 students per class, not 15.  4 credit hours each.  two of those = 180 (after drops, about 150).  I spend at least 60 hours a week on grading, class prep, notes, online shit, office hours.  I get paid 6K for those.  Oh, and throw in a lab.

My take home is $1200 a month for 60 hours a week.

Yeah, not doing that shit ever again.  Learned my lesson.  Fool me once...

Seriously you just reminded me of some friends of mine from art school who hit it big. "studio artists" my ex is a "commercial artist,"(we called those art whores) and i was an "illustrator." (Which means my images were always ones in which you knew what was going on and my pictures looked like things.)

we went to our friends art opening for their installations and drove home in stunned silence. Now, as an art whore my ex was very accomplished and successfull and you would all recognize his projects if i pointed them out to you, and you would go, "cool, must be fun to get paid for that." He turned to me finally after twenty aghast minutes of silent driving and said to me in a hushed voice "I dont know about you, but i think Tim's a fraud." Like he couldnt believe it.

"Yeah. Little kids do that. But they dont get paid like he does." was all i could say. I have a drawing in CRAYON Tim's wife did thats worth prolly 500 bucks just for her name on it. It is visually indistinguishable from a drawing made by my friends 4 year old child.

They get grants. They have museum space. At least if people are still paying what they were for their Styrofoam and toilet paper creations (installations)  they will be taxed like the 1%, and hate it like i do. BUt people like that flummox me. and yes of course they are liberals and hipster douches.

Wow, Godwin-lite twice in 24 hours.  You're not worth serious debate.  Stating that someone who believes that McCain is not as bad as McCaskell or Obama is the political and moral equivalent of Nazi sympathizers and sycophants is not only grossly inaccurate, but an insult to all those who suffered and died due to a totalitarian regime.  Frankly, it gives Obama and his ilk too much credit as well, he's too lazy to bring about evil of that magnitude.

Ad hominem attacks are the refuge of those who have lost the debate on merits already.  The fact that it is a patently false attack as well just underscores how badly you are beaten.  God help you, as you clearly cannot tell venal sins from mortal, nor mere opportunism from true evil.

698 Sven, McCain et al dont fight because they and their donors are going to reap huge profits from the abortion that is Obamacare. That being said, I agree with you that it is high time to distinguish who stands for what, and judge them on their acts and accomplishments.

and choking is what is needed.

For the love of God does the GOP not grasp a big portion of its base and a huge portion of the people who have left the coalition have a genuine hatred of Leviathan?

If the choice is a gentle pubic thrust to my throat or a savage rapine thrust I'd prefer the savage rapine thrust because I may bite the crank off as a reflex and as EoJ says I am not down with sip of penis.

The GOP's mission seems to be slowly "teaching me" to remove my gag reflex.

I saw REM open for Sip Of Penis back in '89

700 MW we are in complete agreement. I need to quaff a little more coffee before I hop on the scooter and ride to work. Current OAT is 47F.

MW I'm afraid you misattributed, Jarhead is the one who stated a slower march to the camp via the moderates.

I don't disagree that RINO domination leads to "just a slower march", but that if it takes a handful of RINOs to get to a majority, or a supermajority, that's a tolerable evil is the thrust of my argument.  Go to war with the army you have, not the one you want--and i don't think we are ever going to see a majority of hard right conservatives.  Hell, the Revolution had only 1/3 Patriots and 1/3 neutral (RINOs of the time, as it were).  Seems to me that worked out pretty well, because the Patriots were the dominant ideology.

The army we have invites Charles Schumer Royalist into camp to make plans...

I'd prefer to either remove them from the army or myself.

Thanks.

704 Sven1077, I'm right there with ya buddy. I dont give two shits about the GOP or it's 'leadership'. They are a bunch of parasites that need to be purged. We just need to find an appropriate and effective emetic.

705 For the love of God does the GOP not grasp a big portion of its base and a huge portion of the people who have left the coalition have a genuine hatred of Leviathan? A) They don't know. B) They know, but discount the numbers. C) They count the numbers but addicts won't quit. D) People, generally, are nuts. E) All of the above.

706 Hell, the Revolution had only 1/3 Patriots and 1/3 neutral (RINOs of the time, as it were). Nobody fought alongside the neutrals or let them make decisions on our war plans. They were neutral so they were ignored or told to pick a side. Had the neutrals been given positions of power, things would have fallen apart after the first major British victory.

Well they are about to find out what a Conservativeless GOP can accomplish I'd wager.

The Conservatives held their nose and backed McCain and Romney...Romney being the easier to bear...

The Liberal and Moderate GOP went to Donkey.

Since I guess the lesson is going to donkey is fine I will join them if the candidate is another ":fuck you I am a centrist" candidate.

709 2 scenarios --

1 -- a solid soldier of Side A is captured by Side B during battle.  Side B takes the soldier to a POW camp and holds him until the end of the war.  Although held, POW is treated with respect and there is no punishment for being on the wrong side.  At the end of the war, POW is released to return home.

2 --  a soldier from Side B is found to be aiding Side A.   Side B executes its own soldier for treason.

711 The Germans lost the battle of Stalingrad because they relied on Eastern European troops to guard one of their flanks. The Russians knew these troops lacked the will, training, or equipment of the Wermacht and so concentrated all their force on them. The auxiliaries were routed. They flanked the Germans and defeated them. The Germans would have been better off without those troops. The Germans lost because they relied on the unreliable. There is a lesson there for us to learn.

718 Okay, I looked it up: from 1976 to 2005, 94 percent of black victims in the U.S. were killed by black offenders. So clearly it's all whitey's fault! If those damn racist white gun owners would just stop buying guns, then black people would stop killing other black people. It's all so simple and logical!

719 The Germans lost the battle of Stalingrad because they relied on Eastern European troops to guard one of their flanks. The Russians knew these troops lacked the will, training, or equipment of the Wermacht and so concentrated all their force on them. The auxiliaries were routed. They flanked the Germans and defeated them. The Germans would have been better off without those troops. ----------------- Mostly because they lacked the equipment - particularly anti-tank weapons that could hurt T-34s. But even without that crippling problem, they were also spread far too thin. I think there would have been a manpower shortage even if German divisions had been in place instead. It wasn't as if the Germans hadn't been warned, though. The Romanians, who were the primary targets of Operation Uranus, detected the pre-offensive gathering of Soviet troops. They warned the Germans repeatedly that the Soviets were going to attack exactly where the Soviets attacked, and that when the attack came, the Romanians weren't going to be able to hold. When the attack started, the Romanians had 22 modern tanks (11 Panzer IIIs and 11 Panzer IVs) that they had received from the Germans. By the time they quit trying to break the encirclement, they had 2 (one of each). In the aftermath of Stalingrad, the Italians and Hungarians (who had also taken losses as secondary targets, in addition to the troops they had in Stalingrad itself alongside the Germans and Romanians) pulled their armies back home. The Italians subsequently collapsed when the Allies invaded. And Hungary's armies wouldn't see combat again until the Soviets reached their borders in late 1944. The Romanians were the only one of the three nations that continued to provide support to the German armies in the field throughout 1943.

The army we have is shooting at US more than at the Democrats.

Reasons.

723 Now I'm beginning to see why respectable scientists sneer at plosone.org. It has the reputation as being a dumping ground for trash papers that would never see the light of day through peer review. (Not that peer review doesn't have problems of its own, but it does still filter out a lot of junk. This is one of the junk papers it filters)

724 Also, I call bullshit on those"artists. I made my own lifestyle choices, but I don't demand anyone else pay for what I do. Since when was art not about sacrifice? If you're not willing to accept that living by your art means struggle, you're a fucking HOBBYIST, not a real artist. (This is not to disparage hobby artists who take their art seriously but don't live off it. There are a lot of artists who think of themselves as "serious" and are easily offended at the implication of being a hobbyist. But that's what they are if they become societal parasites)

725 Seems like the only thing that doesn't make a "racist" these days is being an old school actual racist. Which is odd...
