Overnight Open Thread (11 May 2013)
— CDR M

Don't forget it's Mother's Day tomorrow.

Game of Throne's Mother's Day cards. Never Happen Events

Everytime I read about the health care system in Britain, I cringe as I see it as a harbinger of things to come here. So after reading British Hospitals reveal 750 'Never should happen' blunders, I was curious as to what that rate is in America. Well, according to John Hopkins University School of Medicine, the rate in America is about 500 a year. So what do you think will happen as we get fewer and fewer doctors as Obamacare gets fully implemented?

Lasers

Ah yes. One step closer to mounting 'em on sharks. Lockheed Martin's ADAM laser blasts enemy rockets with its HEL beam.

The Pussification of America

Wrong, wrong, wrong. I don't even know where to begin. Physical education class shouldn't require team sports. Team sports build camaraderie. They teach you to assess the skill sets of your teammates and then get you to employ them where they'll do the most good. It helps you build your communication skills. So many positive things. And yes, they do need to bring back dodgeball.

Villain Shoes

If Rum was around, I'm pretty sure she'd want a pair of these Disney villain inspired shoes. Probably not stompy enough though.

Dead Giveaway-The Song

I knew I have seen this guy before.....

Wolfenstein Returns

Man, I loved playing the original and even the sequel (Return To Castle Wolfenstein) that came out in 2001 so I might have to give Wolfenstein: The New Order a shot when it comes out later this year. The preview trailer does not show much outside of a lot of mechanized robot Nazis. Fingers crossed the SS Elite Guard are back. Those chicks were tough.

Waffle Taco

Hmmmm. I might have to give this a try. Taco Bell Tests Out Breakfast Waffle Taco. Needs bacon though.

17 Dodgeball is a racist, sexist holdover from the Antebellum South, akin to whipping and and chaining the slaves.

That you want to bring it back makes it abundantly clear that misogyny and racism is alive and well in America, and OBama's policies have come not a moment too soon.

Only when he is alowwed to fully implement his social engineering will America fulfill the promise of the collective!

20 EC and NC- I did pick up the little rifle. Their ammo was priced a smidge on the high side. But man did they have it to sell. Lots of cool stuff.

Funny, I never knew they were there. There is a little music shop around the corner that sells some high end acoustic instruments that you can't find just anywhere that I used to frequent.

Got to pick up Road Jr from the gym.

106 I went to R.C. grade school, nerdygirl, and we played "I'm the King of the castle; you're the dirty asshole" and I only discovered as an adult that the real chant in the game is "I'm the king of the castle and you're the dirty vassal."

When we had snowfall covering the schoolyard we'd also play tackle British Bulldog. I don't know if you guys played BB---one kid would start as it and would defend the wall that was 'safe' and all the other kids would have to get passed the "it" to touch the wall. Anyone "it" would tackle would join "its" side so eventually you'd end up with all the kids as "it" except for the one winner. In summer we'd play "touch" BB as tackling onto asphalt is just a little too psycho (contrasted with legally knocking someone down play ball hockey or the like).

BTW, just as some more old-time Canadian trivia, when we'd play "soccer" in the schoolyard using a tennis ball we'd call it playing "foot hockey". I doubt the kids today call it that (assuming they're even allowed to play foot hockey during recess).

117 Didn't they have a Doctor's strike once in California and the death rate went down?

BTW

One thing I do recommend regardless of who what or where you're health care needs get taken place; pay attention, ask questions, google what you don't know and be a little skeptical of a doctor's opinion.

Yeah they went through a lot of education but think about what and how and who educated them.

They're taught the prevailing wisdom, they're taught to treat disease not necessarily cure it, by the nature of the business (and keep in mind at all times that it IS a business) they must use a decision tree for diagnosis that delivers the most LIKELY answer not necessarily the correct one.

They also may make decisions about how to treat you based on economical considerations (this has always been true) and on the possibility of liability and/or being challenged as to whether they applied "best practices" to your case.

Got a disease? Read up on it. Got a condition? Read up on it and apply some thought to how you can more cheaply or easily provide therapy.

Don't expect them to treat you as an individual. Especially these days.

Take a look at Anthony Foxx, who as co-chair of the DNC Host committee (purposely established as a separate entity from the Democratic Party) arranged for a $10 million dollar loan to fund the convention. The DNC Host Committee then simply walked away, defaulting on the loan. Oh..., yes..., now Foxx is Obama's nominee for Sec. of Transportation. Don't bother looking for qualifications.

150 How yeah, forgot.

If you do have to go to the hospital for a surgery or treatment, keep your eyes on anyone who physically touches you.

If they're not wearing gloves, ask them to. If they're wearing them BEFORE they walk into your room, ask them to put new ones on.

If they refuse, ask them to wash their hands. If they still refuse tell them you'll file a complaint and that they can't touch you.

Of course this may not be physically possible for you which is why it's a very good thing to find someone to stand by with you as often as possible.

As a witness and a helper as the nurses have way too much to do and not enough time in the day.

I've watched medical workers who think that the gloves are to protect THEM and not the patient (they are also but more) and would wear the SAME GLOVES while going from patient to patient.

I came down with a nasty and persistent skin disease from being in a hospital and believe that was where and why I got it.

It went very well, the weather we were worrying about stayed to the north of us and we had plenty of cars show up, not bad for the first show at this location. More importantly the managers for the strip mall we were at liked the turnout so it looks like we may have a permanent venue for the show. Having a place to hold the show is the biggest part of it, every other decision revolves around location.

I'm still kind of tickled my Subaru won best in show, we had it off to the side with a generator in the back powering the DJ equipment, but it was the only "import" (it was actually made in Lafayette, Indiana) on the lot.

I fell off on a gravel road, smacked my head and couldn't remember what day it was. I found myself sitting in the hospital examining room with a nurse asking me what I ate yesterday. Why thank you! After doing the mom for gig for 23 years and really never asking for anything and really never getting anything I decided this yr I would try something. I found an ad for a watch I really wanted. I ripped the page out and taped it to the bottom of the bag of goldfish that daughter# 2 eats for a snack. I noticed about 2 days later it was missing but figured she had thrown it away. Tonight daughter #1 showed up and they gave me the watch I wanted. Funny how that works. They were both so proud of themselves!

When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

People need to get over all the stuff that happened to them in school.  Perhaps some of it did seriously damage a few people, and for that,  we should be sorry.  But most of this is nothing but looking for another way to be a victim.

I endured dodge ball,  the odious President's Physical Fitness Test, swimming in regulation swim suits WITH a swim cap, folk dancing with the boys class, and basketball with girls rules (now abolished).

Be aware that on the Cape Cod Bay side, the tide goes way out, so there may be no swimming for a good part of the day. Fun for the kids to explore tidal pools though.

If you want to be close to swimming, stay near the ocean side so you can walk to the beach. They're all equally cold.

219 117 Bitter Clinger One thing I do recommend regardless of who what or where you're health care needs get taken place; pay attention, ask questions, google what you don't know and be a little skeptical of a doctor's opinion. No fooling. A few years ago, I had a physical, and was diagnosed with high blood pressure, and LVH (an enlarged heart). 3 days before, I had been running sprints ... for the past 2 years or so. Wiki pointed me to the answer ... LVH is bad, except in one case ... just one ... the saving link. Some research, a new MD (one who sees people who exercise severely), and detraining for a year, ... my heart is no longer enlarged. Write down what the physician says, analyze your health, habits and vices, do a lot of research ... and be honest with yourself. It can make quite a difference.

Whenever I went on trips, I'd bring back dice for my audit staffers -- often multi-sided ("D and D dice"). I'd encourage them to do their audit samples right in front of the person being tested -- "you have 300 checks and I need to pull 10 to observe the signatures meet the signature authority policy. First we roll a six-sided die for which group of 100, then we roll two 20-sided dice for which one. Winning numbers are <rolls frantically> 137, 361, 228...." Sometimes we'd let the people roll their own sample.

Since the BH has been commuting to High Point, we've been experimenting. While I was out that way, we went to Lexington Barbecue and had some good stuff. Seems to me that one issue causing confusion is that there are two different sauces -- the sauce you cook it with and the sauce you eat it with. Here in California, both are referred to as "BBQ sauce".

I find all this pork smoking\ bbq sauce somewhat interesting. My daughter graduates next Sat and her good buddy across the street does as well so we are somewhat combining our parties. Neighbor has a guy lined up to smoke a whole hog which we will split. I am a bit leary on how it will turn out but half tempted to give tips based off this post. I am also curious what other people around the country do for their kids graduation. When I graduated it was a simple affair, now it's a full blown party with full meal, alcohol and people coming from out of town who get hotel rooms. I sometimes wonder if we haven't lost focus on what it's all about.

You know the general rule: a 1:1 ratio in rifle cost to glass cost. If you can find gear that beat the 1:1 and still performs, that's a very good thing. From what I've see, the lower-end glass has been getting better and better, to the point where it's competetive with the top names' lowest end models.

365 "The Count of Monte Cristo", by Alexandre Dumas, is the best adventure / revenge novel ever written. Discuss. It's been years since I read it, but my remaining impressions: The first third up until whatsisname gets out of the Chateau d'If and finds the hidden fortune is tense, and a lot of fun. The remaining 2/3rds is tedious, since the Count is at that point basically invincible and never in any danger, and it all just drags on and on.

We're still looking forward to the prospect of taking you out to dinner sometime -- but this particular excursion was......odd. I put 2500 miles on a rental car in 10 days, had two lunch meetings with morons in Tennessee, visited with a cousin I haven't seen in years and his wife and kids that I'd never previously met (even though he also lives in California) at my aunt's place (which is 2500 miles from home for each of us) and spent a week in Florida visiting a mouse. 393 379 in other words, its a food and drink bribe to get people to come to your graduation or wedding

Oh. Then no, that's not how I have come to see it.

Graduation ceremonies are to reassure the people who raised the troublesome child that he/she has actually, really, accomplished something that other people would recognize as something.

Bachelor parties are to give your buds one last chance to torment (and tempt, in some cases) you.

Marriage ceremonies, spiritual purposes aside, are to affirm your commitment before the community.

Funerals are for those who are still here to come to terms with the loss.

In no case is the person or people who are nominally the focus, the main point of the exercise.

Yeah. In the olden days of not that many years ago, if you were overmatched by medical school, you became a dentist, or went for the overseas medical degree. In the Brave New World of Government Care, the only important thing is "qualified," one bar for all, so you can feel free to fill the ranks with a much lesser sort of being than we used to insist on for a medical degree. I don't know when the "clock" rolls over. One of the coins (Celestial coins I think) caps at 7 and will disappear if you wait too long, you can "buy" trinkets with it (and should do so because it caps). The other (Ardent coins) doesn't cap but the "store" goes up to hundreds of coins (meaning logging in daily for a year plus for the top "prizes"). But you can buy a permanent mount at like 100.

It seems to be close to Noon CDT, which makes not a lot of sense as the servers are on the west coast. Or at least that's my guess according to when the Celestial Coins dropped.

I'm saving  up to five for the crafting supplies since the other options seem rather temporary (and unless there's more ingame storage where the adventurer's knapsack came from, I don't have the space to be piling up enhancement jewels).

I was really hoping there was a fairly pain free way to pile up the AD given all the sinks for them I've seen.

So everyone bid everything up to a billionty, and the early beta folks had a billionty. It should settle down a bit. The *shops* are not too bad (not good), but the auctions are nuts.

So sorry to burst Army weapons development bubble, but who is dumb enough to tout a successful laser test at 1.5 km = 1500 meters, which is LESS than a mile?  News flash, these lasers need a significant energy source (read gatta have large truck mounted generators) . . . the bad guys are in somewhat entrenched at least temporarily 'safe' positions launching missles targeting locations dozens of MILES away, yet they will set up, hold still and wait while we drive out a few trucks, set up and start our (large) generator, set up and light up our (high power, another reason for large generator) air defense radar (for which they have no indication?) . . . and wait to launch until we're all set up to detect, acquire, target (make decision radar blip is evil, and we want to kill it), and energize our (*very*) short range laser?

- didja notice we had to 'light up' the target for a few seconds w/ the laser to get a kill?

At 1500 meters they can shoot at us with light machine guns!!!

This qualifies as a sort of 'we mock ourselves w/ our own advertising' defense industry pseudo Darwin Award.

The reason it's a "test" is that it's not ready for deployment.

Every weapon in their arsenal underwent tests that were either unsuccessful or inadequate for real world use before they were put into use.

For many years, the naysayers pointed to the imperfect tests of missile defense as proof that it could never work.  They've since bee proven wrong.

Team sports in PE are usually worthless exercises.  That said, I'd make four years of PE mandatory, with only one year of sports and games.  The other three years would be: physical fitness and health (including human reproduction), self defense, and the final year would be more of a finishing school type of deal.  You'd learn social dancing, how to properly dress for various occasions, how to behave at a formal dinner, and so on.

555 It is so....angry my current state. The obvious Lie now, 4 Americans dead and the "O" star chamber states some bull-shit video as a cause and effect? Posted by: Richard at May 12, 2013 05:47 AM (o2AEs) Don't forget over 300 Mexican corpses including a bunch of teens at a party traced back to the DOJ program to covertly arm narco-terrorists in a neighboring allied country for the express purpose of seeing them used in crimes. And used porkulus funds to pay for it. Or the IRS targeting conservatives and Jews for "special treatment" because they believe in the Bill of Rights or that Israel has a right to exist. Or any of the other hundred items on that list... Just trying to cheer you up.

Hahahaha! Deadpool. Awesome. Not very authentic, though. She's not ugly enough to be Wade Wilson.

Then this form of the technology is more suitable for the Navy. CIWS effective range is in that ballpark and is supported by an existing significant power source and air defense radars (it even has it's own), and the platform is highly resistant to small-arms fire at those ranges. The laser would solve one of CIWS core problems - very limited ammunition capacity.  It would also have it's own - rain, dense fog, and even a smokescreen may be enough to block and/or disperse the laser energy, while a physical round is like Honey Badger.
