Quote of the Day

Those who want to "spread the wealth" almost invariably seek to concentrate the power. It happens too often, and in too many different countries around the world, to be a coincidence. Which is more dangerous, inequalities of wealth or concentrations of power?

Obama Orders Airlines to Obey Chinese ADIZ; Gives China a Propaganda Win

How 'illegitimate' can the declared zone be if you obey it? Because ultimately China is more interested in de facto power than de jure power.

As China doubles down on its new Air Defense Identification Zone, the Obama administration told US airlines to comply with new rules in east Asia. US, Japanese, and South Korean warplanes have flown through the zone, disregarding China's rules, but after Chinese jets shadowed a joint Japanese-American exercise in the area, Washington has reportedly warned civilian airliners to obey them.

Meanwhile other countries are simply ignoring it.

Japan and South Korean civilian airlines will not be complying with China's rules.

And here's What a a Shooting War in the East China Sea Might Look Like.

Moar Hate Crime on Campus = Hoax

This fall semester at the liberal arts college in New York saw a curiously high number of bias incident reports. On Nov. 14, the college sent a mass email to students advising them that Bias Incident Response Team (BIRT) had received at least six reports in the last few months of hateful and insensitive messages being scrawled and spray painted on student residences. Messages included "Avoid Being Bitches," "Fuck Niggers," and most prominently, "Hey Tranny. Know Your Place." . . .

Five days after the email was sent, Vassar President Catharine Hill sent a follow-up email announcing that the bias incidents were hoaxes perpetrated by two students. The students wrote the vile messages and then filed the reports themselves, claiming to be the victims of unknown haters.

American Nuclear Family Heading Towards Endangered Species Status

Married households with children were 40.3% of all US households in 1970; in 2012, that share had fallen by more than half to 19.6%. Interestingly, the share of households that were married without children has stayed at about 30%. Other Family Households, usually meaning single-parent families with children, has risen.

58 Are there any telecommunications gurus on here? I have to do something to control costs and get better service. Here is the situation: 2 houses, both lacking in cell signal (106dBa & 95 dBa). Home office needing data, voice, cell phone service, 2nd home needing the same. Currently we have personal land line in main house, office land line, each of us has a cell phone and we have a wi-fi for portable data. In addition we still maintain a dial up account as a redundancy. Internet is provided by a marginal local line of sight provider that really suffers in wet weather or when foliage appears on the trees. Costs run $360/year for the personal land line $1200/year for the business land line $700/year for the ISP $3600/year for Verizon wireless and the wifi I installed an amplifier last year at one house, but there isn't much signal to amplify. As I am isolated I can put up a tower of sorts without a lot of legal trouble, even though I'm near a metro area. Any thoughts? Thanks.

About 10 years ago, I was working at a place whose Chief Engineer was Swiss. He had some guys he had gone to school with visiting, so that he could show off that he had "made it", and his buddies were staying in San Francisco.

So, these guys come 'round to the workplace (they all wore white socks....odd), and they go off for a while, then a couple of days later, our Engineering dude is all bleary and sort of cranked out of shape. Turns out, one of his buddies had called him an a panic around 3 am because this girl he picked up and brought to his hotel room had some extra parts he wasn't expecting....

Of course, our first thought was, "....and what did he expect in SF?" -- but our second thought was, "wait -- he called you?!?!?"

100 If I remember rightly, the singer/pianist in the Guess Who was Burton Cummings, and he was most emphatically not a part of Bachman-Turner Overdrive, as he and Randy Bachman (a Mormon, incidentally) were on the outs, big time. I know they have since reconciled, and Cummings and Bachman have done a number of reunion concerts. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at December 01, 2013 11:05 PM (8Fl6F) Yep. 101 But it seems clear that the U.S. is also sending a message that it won't respect such a claim (Popular Mechanics)

on the other hand  (from other news outlets)

US Air carriers 'urged' (by Obama's White House or somebody in the news media not authorized to speak for the White House but was repeating what it had been told to report) to comply with China's new ADIZ rules.

So standard Obama White House Operating Procedure, The Obama Administration is on both sides, all sides, all possible sides of the issue. If you want to comply with these new rules you may, or probably should so you don't get shot down, unless you are US Military in which case you don't have to comply even though you might still get shot down, in which case nothing will be done about it.

So Obama is being perfectly clear.

126 From my Dad... The kids filed into class Monday morning. They were all very excited. Their weekend assignment was to sell something, then give a talk on salesmanship. Little Sally led off. "I sold Girl Scout cookies and I made $30" she said proudly, "My sales approach was to appeal to the customer's civil spirit and I credit that approach for my obvious success." "Very good", said the teacher. Little Debbie was next. "I sold magazines" she said, "I made $45 and I explained to everyone that magazines would keep them up on current events." "Very good, Debbie", said the teacher. Eventually, it was Little Johnny's turn. The teacher held her breath. Little Johnny walked to the front of the classroom and dumped a box full of cash on the teacher's desk. "$2,467", he said. "$2,467!" cried the teacher, "What in the world were you selling?" Toothbrushes", said Little Johnny. "Toothbrushes", echoed the teacher, "How could you possibly sell enough tooth brushes to make that much money?" "I found the busiest corner in town", said Little Johnny, "I set up a Dip & Chip stand and I gave everybody who walked by a free sample." They all said the same thing, "Hey, this tastes like dog poop!" Then I would say, "It is dog poop. Wanna buy a toothbrush? I used the President Obama method of giving you some crap, dressing it up so it looks good, telling you it's free and then making you pay to get the bad taste out of your mouth." Little Johnny got five stars for his assignment. Bless his heart.

Jinx the Cat,

It all depends on your location, and what Internet options you have.

If you can get a stable internet connection, it can replace everything to one degree or another. The cell phones can leverage the internet connection using a femtocell, which will take care of signal strength. Use Google Voice or something like Vonge for "landline like" service. If the cells can get a stable connection, why do you need to keep the traditional POTS (plain old telephone service) lines?

If all you can get Internet wise is what you have, you may want to see what wildblue.com can offer (satellite Internet ). Though this can have issues in bad weather.

I hope to keep him around for a long time yet but his side of the family tends to go quickly. I have also known some rare and extraordinary men like that. Widowed at age 50, remarried at 60 (to a 25 year old) and raising family number two with wife number two. I have a friend who is 71 and has a 12 year old son, as well as numerous offspring from family number one.

335 To tell U.S. air carriers to participate in the People's Republic of China's Sea Air Defense Identification Zone is a stroke of genius. To quote Popular Mechanics as a prophet of Commie readiness to interdict air traffic is hilarious. Imagine the fluent radio traffic of loyal Chinese Communist Party controllers interrogating international air crews. I'm sure plenty of operators will be standing by for all the expected calls to 1-800-FRY-SAFE. Imagine overloaded reverse engineered Chinese Communist computers crashing under the deluge of automated responses of commercial transponders simply doing their jobs. 404 error, please try to fly through here again some other time soon. See how many Chinese drones are loosed into the Sea Air Defense Identification Zone to keep tabs on all that traffic. See how many operational fighter jets the Chinese People's Red Great Leap Forward Air Force send up. It is laughable that the Communist Chinese presume to manage access to a huge piece of sea and atmosphere.

Wait. Tim Hortons has invaded the U.S. now? Is this because Canada used their unassuming wiles to quietly become better than us during these years of darkness?

This will not stand. America will be renewed. But maybe we'll need to cut off that Northeast Corridor to survive. A Tim Horton infection, once started, is hard to stop. Amputation may be required. Without drastic action, the very principle of bacon itself could be lost. Canadians have many virtues, but understanding bacon is not one of them.

347 PGiS, it is a somber film that has moments of levity and others of sadness.

Rudi, the 'boy with the lemon colored hair,' has a puppy dog infatuation with Liselle but he grows into being her best friend.  He is a sprinter who sees nothing wrong in wanting to be like Jesse Owens so daubs himself in black polish that leads to him being hauled to his parents by a neighbor.  And his father Alex is reduced to telling him why he can't be like Jesse Owens is because the father says so.  He becomes her ally.

At one point Rudi thinks of running away - 'See I am prepared!' as he holds up a bulging knapsack,  Liselle ansers 'probably has your soccer ball.'  So him and Liselle are at a lake all alone and they scream "I hate Hitler!" before eventually going back home

Rosa, played by Emma Watson - you won't recognize her, is 'the woman wrapped in thunder.'  She is gruff and with a sharp tongue but you find as the movie goes on its because she cares too much for her husband Hans and eventually Liselle.

Hans, the painter who refuses to join the NAZI party.  The NAZIs finds out one of his neighbors is really a Jew.  They are dragging the man into a car.  As everyone else stands there as the man screams he is a good German, Hans rushes to try and help his friend.  He is knocked violently to the curb.  Later at home as Rosa tries to mend his wounds, Hans breaks down at the kitchen table crying and wondering what had he done.  Later Liselle tells him he had merely done what people do.

And there is Max.  A Jew on the run after Kristalnacht.  Hans owes a life debt to Max's family.  Max's father died in WWI instead of Hans.  One night after Max regains some of his strength he and Liselle are in the bedroom upstairs.  Max sleeping in the bed that would have been where Liselle's brother slept if he had not died.  And they are giggling imaging letters to Hitler from his mother.  Both have lost their mothers - Liselle's had given her up because she could not care for the girl.  And when the SA came for the Jews on Kristalnacht, a friend helped Max escape but he had to leave his mother.

Awesome. The Italians call it Lardo, and, I imagine, charge a lot more for it. The Cantonese will, at times, serve you a dish that consists of a very crisp layer of caramelized pork skin, 3/4" of pure happy pork fat, and 3/8" of meat. It's incredibly delicious, and, I am informed, illegal in the US because you're not allowed to butcher pigs at the optimum "suckling pig" age, for some reason.

And if America as we have traditionally understood it is going to survive in a recognizable form, America has to be politically broken off from this place (and the rest of coastal Commiefornia). There are other parts of the country which share that fundamental incompatibility.

But that guy who married Courtney Stodden... yeah, as a father, I'd find it much harder to object to that. He straight-up married her, which is a pretty solid sign of his intentions.

Granted, they recently split up, so maybe blessing their union wouldn't have been the smartest decision her father could've made. But it seemed good at the time.

431 So, I'm heading out in the morning for New Orleans. Looks like I'll be staying in the nearby town of LaPlace, rather than New Orleans-proper. I'd like to avoid driving in the city itself as much as possible, but the hotel (Holiday Inn) doesn't appear to have a shuttle service as far as I can tell.

Anybody got any tips on how I might be able to get to-and-from the city without huge hassle or expense?

432 #426: I'm not sure, to be honest. She was 16 when they married, and thus may not have even needed parental permission, depending on where she lived at the time.

That's another reason I wouldn't have objected too strongly in that situation. If he just wanted to sleep with her, her father would have legal recourse to stop him. But marriage? Not so much.

Even without age-of-consent laws permitting marriage whether or not the girl's father okays it, the fact that her suitor was willing to give up so much just to have her is pretty compelling. Marriage is kind of a big deal, especially for the man involved.

440 #431 The marriage was legit as far as I know which implies parental consent if it were legally required from at least one parent. He did the straight up thing and married her; what they did before getting married really is her father's job to control but I never heard anyone say they slept together before marriage. The fact that it fell apart has probably more to do with their lifestyle choices than age differences. My aunt at 22 married my uncle when he was ~55 and it lasted over 40 years. Have a buddy in his mid 70's divorce his wife, #2, after 19 years of marriage. Their age difference is 20 years.

442 "Oh for fuck's sake are we now discussing how my particular area of geography has to be destroyed? Again?"

I live in the SF Bay Area. I was born here. It's my particular area of geography.

And if America as we have traditionally understood it is going to survive in a recognizable form, America has to be politically firewalled off from this place (and from the rest of coastal Commiefornia). There are other parts of the country which share that fundamental incompatibility.

No place has to be "destroyed", as you put it. Rather, the incompatible regions must divorce from one another. Hopefully in an amicable manner.

Nations don't have to be geographically contiguous. No reason why the USA can't break up into coastal and heartland pieces, with many of the Pacific and Atlantic coastal sections remaining in a long distance union with one another.

And, arrogant liberals from the two coasts will still be able to look out the windows of the jet from thirty thousand feet and sneer about "flyovers". Except that the flyovers will be spared having to cohabit within the same political union as the arrogant liberals any longer. I call that a win.

Yeah if you ask me none of those bands qualify as metal. I can't put a finger on it. There was always good and bad metal, and even the bad stuff still had some elements I could somewhat recognize. For me that early 90's era was a different deal, I hated that stuff on a whole different level, I found nothing about it familiar.

464 Knew a dude in college whose hot but very stupid girlfriend wound up with the nickname "bacon grease". Nobody would tell her why they called her that, of course. Seems one evening at a frater party she passed out, and he lubed her with the leftovers from the breakfast pan, and had his way with her. That she didn't figure it out the next morning, just from the prominent bacon scent emanating from her nethers is surprising, though perhaps not. Her being hot, but very, very stupid and all.
