Overnight Open Thread (12-10-2013)
— Maetenloch

So my work computer decided not to boot this morning which pretty much wasted the entire day and ultimately ensuckened the ONT. But hey it's not like you were really going to read it anyway so we'll just call it a push.

Are You Colorblind?

Well it's time for the annual AoSHQ color blindness test so we can see what you can't see. It's not like we ever use this information for say embedding secret messages for the other morons on the web site. Because that would be um...wrong I guess.

Tell me what you see.

Demo no. 16 plate 2 42

Can't see anything? Well there are some new fangled glasses for you people.

Okay you saw some things - now let's see how good your color acuity really is. Take the color sorting test here.

Quote of the Day

An acre in Middlesex is better than a principality in Utopia.  The smallest actual good is better than the most magnificent promises of impossibilities.

--  Thomas Babington Macaulay

When All You Have is a Hammer...

Everything is a class warfare nail.

I wondered if we could go back to talking about zombies and socialism? Because there is quite a lot of scholarship on this, recently, and a lot of people writing, erm, quite intelligently about the idea of the power of the zombie narrative as a class war narrative.

91 From "The Hill":

In 2011, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released a study that explored how a VMT system might work. That report suggested devices could be fitted onto cars that log how far they have traveled, and these devices could be electronically read at gas stations to general tax bills for drivers.

... but how did they miss out on the “penis rings” to track how often you use your “Johnson” ?

Of course, it would have to measure not just how often but for how long
and extrapolate some measure of the partnerÂ’s pleasure then use a
formula, cooked up by some bureaucrat, to tax you for your time. With
something like this, there would be no need for abortions, and all those
pesky child support issues would be washed away in no time with the built-in GPS feature.

After years of efforts to stamp out procreation, youÂ’d think this would be a bigger [wink, wink, know what I mean] priority.

So I think they might like their own calendar, to put in their rooms.  Particularly since this is August:

196 I am now, and have been for a while, out of work on disability. I never finished my degree because I spent 20 years working 60-80 weeks. I used to wonder what I would do if I had extra time on my hands and now I have lots, but not much energy. Lately I've been thinking that, in some ways, perhaps it is a Blessing rather than a curse. I can now study whatever interests me. Perhaps I can take a class here and there and see if I'm still fascinated by science.

Posted by: andycanuck at December 10, 2013 11:18 PM (vjQ/G) The chemical symbols are the same regardless of the name of the element in your languages (except for the Germans who use "J" for Iodine). Some of the symbols for the elements represent other languages word. K = Kalium = Postassium Na = Natrium = Sodium W = Wolfram = Tungsten Au = Aurum = Gold Ag = Argentum = Silver Fe = Ferrum = Iron Cu = Cuprum = Copper Sb = Stibium = Antimony Sn = Stannum = Tin Pb = Plumbum = Lead

We had an Indian chap in here once who was arguing that the Moghuls had already collapsed and that the Hindu locals were already sorting the Muslim problem before the Brits interfered.

After some heated argument I ended up agreeing with him. There have always been Brits (I am not one of these) who have had a fetish for Islam, or at least for Arab culture. The Brits in India coddled the Muslims more than they deserved - culminating in Partition.

The Brits brought the English common-law, and we kept out the Russkies. It was an imperialistic adventure that only looks good in retrospect, if you run the contrafactuals.

Kind of like... America in the Philippines! (With the Japanese military playing the role of the Tsar.)

436 W = Wolfram = Tungsten

From wikipedia:

"The name "tungsten" (from the Nordic tung sten, meaning "heavy stone") is used in English, French, and many other languages as the name of the element, but not in the Nordic countries. Tungsten was the old Swedish name for the mineral scheelite. The other name "wolfram" (or "volfram"), used for example in most European (especially Germanic and Slavic) languages, is derived from the mineral wolframite, and this is also the origin of its chemical symbol, W.[6] The name "wolframite" is derived from German "wolf rahm" ("wolf soot" or "wolf cream"), the name given to tungsten by Johan Gottschalk Wallerius in 1747. "

Au = Aurum = Gold

Goldfinger's full name, according to Ian Fleming, was Auric Goldfinger.

437 GMB -- (a) what church? (b) what kind of situation do you live in? (c) how "adult" are the kids mentally? (d) what state are you in?

As a sort of extreme example, if these were well-established sensible kids in New York or New Hampshire, they might just get married.

Posted by: cthulhu at December 10, 2013 08:44 PM (T1005)

438 I'd suggest, GMB, telling both sets of parents as kindly and plainly as possible, and then suggesting that they take a few hours to talk things over before you bring the kids back to their respective homes.

That allows for a bit of a cooling off period. Things get said sometimes in the heat of the moment that are regretted later, but can never be taken back.

Though I'm not totally on board with the attitude, I'm kind of thinking that starting with the boy's parents is the way to go.....and working with them (and clergy!) on the presentation with the girl's parents.

The reason being is that young lads are somewhat supposed to be sowing their wild oats hither and yon -- so it'd come as less of a shock and more of a "ok, coppers, I'm nicked."

468 Well, knowing so little (and I'm not looking for a reveal of all the details here) offering advice is difficult.

But it might help to know:

- Do the parents know each other? Are they friendly (or at least on good terms)?
- Do they know their kids are involved? If so, how seriously involved?
- Are you (GMB) friendly or at least on good terms with the parents?
- Why are the kids "scared beyond belief"? Do they actually need to be fearful of the parents reaction? Or are they worried because they are so young, now facing an immensely troubling situation and just are nervous to break the news?

Posted by: Alana at December 11, 2013 02:11 AM (gRlf5)

Let us not also pretend that there aren't costs and benefits to any course of action. Adoption isn't a panacea -- one family loses a member; one family gains one with an asterisk -- in a "perfect world", it wouldn't be necessary.

But when we're living in an imperfect world, sometimes adoption is the best of available alternatives -- and sometimes, God help us, so is abortion [let's just posit a pregnancy so messed-up that delivering the child would involve a 50% risk of the mother's life, while the child's probability of seeing a 3rd birthday is <5% {and a fourth birthday <1%} while in horrible pain -- with a few billion people on the planet, it's pretty certain that this is out there]. And sometimes the preservation of life is paramount over financial and social ruin. We all know this.

And, conversely, it is wonderful to celebrate the lives of successful adopters/adoptees. They see, firsthand, all of the benefits in their families.

Thing is, I got most of the thing built over the weekend. Then I ran into a problem with sticking the bracket on the door -- the new one doesn't want the bracket in the same place as the old one, and there are painted-over carriage bolts holding the old one on....so, adapter time! Made the adapter about 90% on Monday, got it on today.....and discovered that the silly instructions now want me to run around an empty garage to run wires. Problem is, my garage is Full of Shit. In fact, it is right up to the red line of Overstuffed with Shit. So, tomorrow is now "move enough stuff out that I can run wires" day.

Believe it or not, I was -- and therein hangs a tale. Last May, I ran into my cousin Stevie at my aunt's house in Tennessee. Mind you, we live about 400 miles apart, but we chanced to bump into each other 3000 miles from where either of us live.....

Anyway, he and I are talking about the virtues of being able to do stuff, and he says that he's been chuckin' chips with his mini-mill. I said, "fancy that -- I just got one myself for $400." [about half what he paid for his....although, to be fair, I still haven't unpacked mine]. And, BTW, he bragged a bit about the rotary table he got for $125 (which I'm not sure I believe)....which is a reason I just got one.

Anyhoo, just after this conversation, he's talking to his dad (my uncle) and they're talking about a place that's "right across from the hospital where we went when I got the chip in my eye"....and it's made me that much more cautious that I will not be the cousin who mills a chip into his eye.

As they say: normal people learn from their experiences; stupid people don't learn; and smart people learn from someone else's experience....

Can't you use the old wires (mostly) from your old opener?

btw, installing the optics portion isn't too bad; I've done a couple. There's usually a light on one side that indicates when you're in alignment.

Posted by: GnuBreed at December 11, 2013 03:04 AM (wNF3N)

Again, this whole installation would have been a breeze if my garage weren't Packed With Shit. I'm not worried about the installation part, I'm worried about the "sprawling all the crap on my driveway and putting it back" part.

Nah, he already had power. It's wires to the internal open/close button, wires to the optical safety, maybe even wires to an external keypad.

Same amount of "running", less moving of stuff.

Posted by: Arbalest at December 11, 2013 03:11 AM (FlRtG)

See @541. And this is light wire, not Romex. I'll get it tomorrow -- the thing is, I was so fixated on the mechanical parts of things, and doing them without moving all the crap, that it hit me like a cinderblock in the chest when I turned the page and it wanted me to run all over the place.

Posted by: cthulhu at December 10, 2013 11:20 PM (T1005)

544 It's wires to the internal open/close button, ... That should be easy. No chance of pushing a staple through a 120VAC line. Still, running them along the ceiling should make things easier. Perhaps some zipcord is the answer: rated for 120VAC and a few amps, and 2 wires. Run one for each control. Not pretty, but cheap.

545 I'm curious as to why you need a garage door opener if the garage is just full of stuff and not car.

Or is it stuff with a tiny space juuuuusst big enough for car.

Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That (Unexpurgated Edition) at December 10, 2013 11:25 PM (LSDdO)

546 @GnuBreed and @bill-o get it. I did the whole last bit of mechanical assembly standing in a clear space about 1" from the door that was only about 20"x10". The lawnmower was behind me, there was a folding table to my right, and to my left was a Black and Decker Workmate with a table saw on top.

And I was thinking, "get this done, connect up the white and red from the pushbuttons, and bob's-your-uncle!" Little did I know that running new wiring from the motor to the lower edges of the door was mandatory.

Posted by: cthulhu at December 10, 2013 11:26 PM (T1005)

That is a very astute comment. We bought our house 15 years ago and never thought about it. The garage was built in 1986. I suspect that the opener is 27 years old.

I'm just trying to imagine what it would have been like having an online update system for the Amiga in 1986. Too bad it would made the systems far too expensive to have updatable ROM or enough RAM to not need a large chunk of ROM code. When the Atari ST first shipped they were so far from a final 1.0 ROM they just had you boot from floppy and give up nearly half of RAM until the ROM was finally released as a free upgrade.

As I may have mentioned once or twice, I'm increasingly disenchanted with the state of my birth that possesses the most human-friendly climate this side of the Levant.....but the concept of being able to organize my stuff is partially compensating for my disappointment. There are so many places where I could have a garage for vehicles, a shop, AND a storage area -- and not have to compromise on having a house and a garden -- that it's not even funny.

A big portion of our garage is taken up by what I call giant dog toys. My sister spent a small fortune on agility gear despite not having a yard that allows it to be set up or a reasonably close location that would allow such. She doesn't do agility with the current dog, just obedience and tracking. But she cannot bring herself to give up that equipment. She claims she could gt some good money for it but I suspect by the time she finally accepts selling it is the right thing to do it will have decayed past the point of usability.

If she gave up that stuff we wouldn't put a second car in the space. Instead we'd bring home the large amount of stuff in storage, most of it my mother's, and perhaps get rid of some of it without waiting for my mother to die first. All of us have trouble letting go and my mother keeps avoiding the situation by claiming she's going to take a bunch of stuff to the local swap meet to get cash for it. We have to counter with the fact that much of it had been at the swap meet already several times in the past when she was much younger and nobody wanted it then.

Yeah, given some garage space to use, I'd be able to take advantage of some bargains when they came up and save us some money. I have a hard enough time making mother and sister replace the toilet paper in the tower in the bathroom instead of waiting for the tower to be empty. (The towers hold four rolls and a box of tissue in the top.) The idea being the main supply going empty should be the signal to buy more while the bathrooms are still well stocked and thus not need to make a special trip to Costco,  which is a bit out of the way. But instead it becomes my job alone.

The annoying thing for me relates to the software project guy who keeps getting linked in the sidebar -- no wonderful system ever starts from one that doesn't work.....instead, a working "stupid" system can get smarter. I don't mind putting the sensors in.....if I could use the system in the meantime and make sure it was working properly.
