As an adolescent, I loved to read the science fiction magazine Analog. One of my favorite Analog stories was "Hindsight" by Harry Turtledove. (I still have my copy of this "special spoof issue," dated mid-December 1984, in my garage.)In "Hindsight," a 1950s pulp sci-fi writer is startled to discover that an unknown author has published a story that remarkably resembles one he had in the planning stages. He and his editor investigate, eventually discovering a woman who reveals she's a sci-fi writer from the future who has returned to the 1950s-all the way from 1983!-to try to change the world through science fiction.
...But my favorite thing about the story is a scene in which the writer from the future ushers the two men into her back room, where she keeps her future technology. There's a 1980s-era word processor and a dot-matrix printer, charmingly outmoded from the vantage point of 2013 but stunning to the men in the story. And in the corner, a top-loading VCR attached to a small color TV set. She plays Star Wars for the writer, and he's flabbergasted-not just by the color picture, but by a recognizable-yet-aged Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi.
...I can't be the only person who thinks about this stuff. (I mean, Marty McFly's Walkman!) So I mentioned it on Twitter and suddenly found myself in a discussion about what Apple device you'd want to take back in time from today to blow away those sci-fi writers in 1956. (If you're interested, I've saved the whole thing on Storify.)
The iPad is probably the right answer, assuming you had time to prepare. (Be sure to bring a charger!) The tablet would be shockingly small, but it has a nice, big screen-big enough for a bunch of dumbstruck 50s denizens to crowd around. It also has the capacity to hold a staggering amount of content.
One of the mental games I play whenever I'm stuck someplace without anything or anybody to occupy me is to imagine that I was suddenly transported back to say 1959 with only what I'm holding and what's in my pockets. How would I be able to prove that I truly was from the future and how much information could clever investigators glean from the few objects on my person?
Well the dates on any coins or bills would be a big clue - and (assuming they aren't clever Commie fakes) would tell them right off the bat that we were still around 50 years later so probably no nuclear WWIII. The tags on my clothes would also be some evidence although I wonder what they would think of all the 'Made in China' labels - did we defeat and occupy China somewhere along the way?
My Jeep car keys with their radio-based remote control would probably impress them - especially the mysterious ICs used in the circuits. The high tech Swiss Army knife I always carry with a laser, pen, and USB stick would probably both amaze and baffle them. And then you have the unusual alloys in my watch and plastic products in my shoes and clothing. I figure all that plus my dental work would be enough to convince them that whatever my story is I'm definitely 'not from around here'.
And if I happen to have my iPhone with me....well then behold and fear my techo-magic all you puny twentieth century humans!!
The Two Kinds of Libertarianism: Calhounian and Heinleinian
Today in America, we see two kinds of libertarianism, which we might call "Calhounian" and "Heinleinian." Both kinds believe in freedom, but they are very different in their emphasis-and in their politics. The names behind the adjectives are John C. Calhoun (1782-1850), of South Carolina, and Robert A. Heinlein (1907-1988 ), of California. In other words, two different states, two different centuries-and two very different outlooks.
...Finally, the two groups are wired differently. Calhounians are often rooted in place, and feel both constrained and liberated by tradition and belief.
On the other hand, the Heinleinians, tech-oriented as they are, tend to feel emancipated from the past. We might consider one of the central activities of a modern techster: computer coding.
Well Heinleinian libertarianism may be sexier at the moment but the Calhounian version has a stronger Burkean pedigree of existence and is more likely to survive in adverse conditions. After all who doesn't want the most freedom for their own kith and kin?
Never have I seen Israel and America's core Arab allies working more in concert to stymie a major foreign policy initiative of a sitting U.S. president, and never have I seen more lawmakers - Democrats and Republicans - more willing to take Israel's side against their own president's. I'm certain this comes less from any careful consideration of the facts and more from a growing tendency by many American lawmakers to do whatever the Israel lobby asks them to do in order to garner Jewish votes and campaign donations.
Fairly good advice and even the 'douchey' ones are more right than wrong.
People are tired of you being the funny, drunk guy. When in doubt, always kiss the girl. Always carry cash. Keep some in your front pocket. Never stay out after midnight three nights in a row. Unless something really good comes up on the third night. It's better if old men cut your hair. Ask for Sammy at the Mandarin Oriental Barbershop in Hong Kong. He can share his experiences of the Japanese occupation, or just give you a copy of Playboy. There's always another level. Just be content knowing that you are still better off than most who have ever lived. You can get away with a lot more if you're the one buying the drinks.
Like all predators muggers consistently choose victims who are the most vulnerable even if the muggers can't say exactly why.
A small number of criminals commit most of the crimes, and the crimes they commit are spread unevenly over the population: some unfortunate individuals seem to be picked out repeatedly by those intent on violent assault. Back in the 1980s, two psychologists from New York, Betty Grayson and Morris Stein, set out to find out what criminals look for in potential victims. They filmed short clips of members of the public walking along New York's streets, and then took those clips to a large East Coast prison. They showed the tapes to 53 violent inmates with convictions for crimes on strangers, ranging from assault to murder, and asked them how easy each person would be to attack.
The prisoners made very different judgements about these notional victims. Some were consistently rated as easier to attack, as an "easy rip-off". There were some expected differences, in that women were rated as easier to attack than men, on average, and older people as easier targets than the young. But even among those you'd expect to be least easy to assault, the subgroup of young men, there were some individuals who over half the prisoners rated at the top end of the "ease of assault" scale (a 1, 2 or 3, on the 10 point scale).
5 Reasons the English Language Makes No Freaking Sense
I blame the French and academics with a Latin fetish.
Over the last 500 years, there's been a continuing effort to standardize all spelling -- and a lot of the stuffy academic types making the rules made a real mess of it. In the 16th century, the people putting together dictionaries decided to insert a "b" into "debt" and "doubt" to remind everyone that they had evolved from the Latin word "debitum" -- even though the preferred spellings, "dette" and "doute," made way more sense. But hey, at least the common man would forever be reminded of precious Latin, thus ensuring that it would never become a dead langua- oh wait, no, it died more completely than an engineer on the away team, didn't it? The academics did the exact same thing with "receipt" (then spelled "receit," but drawn from the Latin word "recepta" ) and smugly smirked down at generations of dyslexics accidentally writing "recipe."

Muslims Attack Protesters Calling For An End To Islamic Violence
But with the annual release of the FBI's hate crime numbers, statistical proof is once again available for those who are interested in the real answer as to which groups are subjected to the most attacks. This year's numbers, like those of every other previous year since they began compiling such statistics, are clear: Jews remain the No. 1 target of hate crimes in America and no other group comes even close. Incidents involving Muslims, who are, according to the unchallenged meme that is central to every story or broadcast about the subject, the prime targets actually suffer only a fraction as much as Jews. Is it too much to ask reporters who regurgitate the same tired, unproven story lines about Muslims in the coming year to take these facts into account?
The actual number of hate crimes involving a muslim victim per year: 130. Which is miniscule compared to the population of the US and on par with the number of reported anti-Muslim hate crimes pre-9/11.

And tell them that it took them 30 years to overcome the disadvantage they had forced on themselves by their closed architecture, confiscatory pricing and proprietary software and hardware.
And then they had to do it in a new medium other than the one they first developed. That just happened to be being underused.
I'd take back a Glock 13, 2,000 rounds of ammo and a list of certain people's parents.

* AIPAC is itself subject to influence. That's why it went all-in for American interference in Syria - because Obama made calls. AIPAC's initial thought was to leave the mess alone.
* AIPAC is not nearly as powerful as people think it is. That's why Congress shot down the call to interfere in Syria.
As for where TEH JOOS!! fit into any of this, I'm not seeing it. I just saw a lobby group in DC stumbling over its own dick (and, incidentally, annoying a lot of everyday Jews in the process).

The only thing I don't like is that our Germanic language started to be subjected to Latin grammar rules: since English is NOT Latin, we are allowed to end a sentence with a preposition. Ending sentences with "of, up, off, etc" is legal.

This doesn't happen very often out here in ludite land but it does.

Wow. That is amazingly generous. How can you say, "not a good one" @92? The kids trusted you, you did your best to help them, and you're giving them shelter and education going forward. How does this qualify as anything but mitzvahs?

They are going to have too, some I guess. If they want to stay in the community. Believe me neither is going to be able to sit around and do nothing.
There are plenty of chores to do around here. Plenty of lessons to be learned.
But if you look to standards of our community, most young people are married by the time they are 18-19 so they are only a bit ahead of themselves.

It's not just the community, it's also the standards of history -- protracted infantilism is a very recent innovation.

Holy crap---I do that too!
The first thing I always think about for that (and for any era earlier than the '70s) is my relatively-cheap quartz crystal watch: it'll be thinner than earlier watches and once anyone normal or a genuine watchmaker opens it, they'll see it doesn't have the workings of any watch of the era. The dentistry is a good idea although the state of my gums and teeth will probably match earlier (much earlier) time period's.
However, I've got an Italian surname on my i.d. so I'd have to be careful if it's WW2 era but I can tell them I've got my dad and two uncles serving in the Canadian forces. (As well as the Irish-surnamed ones; and my dad's friends.) So that would help in that case.
And if it really came push to shove, then maybe discussing (but only with literally the highest-level staff and starting out with one-word written statements that would mean nothing to interrogators) the Ultra secret, Los Alamos and D-Day landings in Sicily, Normandy and Anzio with their code-names if time appropriate (say in late '42 or early '43) and using the argument that no Italian/Axis spy used as a field agent would have been told ANY of that information because he'd be too valuable to use as a field agent in case of capture so I must be from the future. "And by the way, guys, you might want to have your families look for a few stocks and gold buying starting at certain dates; nudge, nudge, wink, wink; like I'll be doing with my dad."

Pretty much the standards of the community are relaxed and teens get to explore the world around them.
Now standards very from community to community and are not very "standard" at all.
Amish are what you call super conservative on what it means to live "a simple life" Then you have what are Traditional Mennonites, almost as conservative as the Amish. Will dress and will not even admit they speak english.
I come from a Reform Mennonite tradition. The old dress is favored but dressing "western" is not frowned on much"
We also use a lot more modern technology that the others.
In our version of Rumsprina, you pretty much decide if you are going to stay in your community and all that entails.

There's one woman who's not comfortable with this in the first place and when she has her "abortion" too late and instead ends up with a live birth, the witnesses are so amazed that it starts a trend to having live births instead of abortions. I can't recall exactly but I think the population used test-tube-style baby farming for population replacement so there were no longer any live births.

Like changing a toilet or digging up a clogged septic tank.
You know it's going to be dirty and smelly. You know it's going to be painful and difficult to persevere.
You also know that there won't be any fun or prizes after the jobs done just that things won't smell as bad anymore.
But you know it has to be done and it needs doing NOW and not later.
Vote for anyone other than an incumbent unless you are SURE they are an actual conservative that represents there constituents.
Vote for those who are known to have integrity and fewer "connections" than their opponent.
And if all else fails, write yourself in so that at least you are voting and not surrendering.
We might be surprised at the results. (but probably not.)

Actually, it wasn't that exciting....it's just that they assume you're going to install them in an empty garage, and it frequently took some minutes to go from one side to the other because of all the warehoused crap [for example, to go from the door attachment bracket to the power plug for the unit, you had to de-attach the door using the emergency release handle, open the door manually from the inside, exit the garage, go around 3 sides of the garage (though the house on side 3), exit the house into the garage, and go forward about six feet -- even though you ended up about 8' from where you started.].

A modern car! Take a trailer of spare parts, and let's just get that converter off before you leave, because 1959 fuel will plug it up in a day or two. Your new versions of a VCR won't tape the broadcast line-counts of 1959, you know. What did the dot-matrix chick do when she ran out of tractor-paper? Punch a lot of holes?
You might do best to just take a calculator, with spare batteries of course. In '59 they still did a lot of calculations.

I can about see myself bursting into a cabinet meeting to warn Allen and John Dulles that Fidel was approaching Habana, and having them roll their eyes, cluck their tongues and call me a rube for not knowing that they knew all about it...
A car magazine not noted for its great fiction once ran a fun story, in which a guy sends off a coupon to a parts advertiser in the back of a 1930's magazine -- and gets an answer! He quickly develops an old car parts business, all by mail, then figures a way to order a new car, to be left on a street. An unplanned bathroom break keeps him from actually meeting his out-of-time correspondent (and he was worrying about that--talk about a deus ex machina plot device). He ends up with a showroom-new Model A in the present time, and gets points taken off by car-show judges because it's too damned original. Now that's how I'd like to do time travel. A new Ford GT, you know, was about 16 grand.

As a child of the transition between the worst cold-weather car-starting device ever invented (Ford's variable-venturi carburetor) and hassle-free quickly-toasty electronic fuel injection, this gets my vote as jaw-dropper for anyone who's experienced four actual seasons.
Don't worry about keeping your foot correctly-positioned in 1/64" increments on the accelerator pedal. Turn the key and let the silicon do its magic!

I had a variable-venturi carb on my first car!!!! Boy, was that a total piece-of-shit or what? I understand the principle, and evidently it tested out fine on the bench with lab-grade gasoline, but when released to the real world, the needle valve rapidly developed a coating of gasoline impurities and would wonk out the precise fuel/air/velocity ratios that were supposed to make it so kewl.....often to the point where it underperformed standard carbs.

They were using NTSC in 1959 US. Any VCR should be fine so long as it has an RF input. If anyone ever made a consumer VCR for ATSC broadcasts, I never saw it marketed, even at CES.
Today was one of those really crappy days when I had nothing to do, no motivation, and just went back to sleep in hopes of never waking again. Then, after I could sleep no more I lie in bed being miserable. Yeah, I get like that. No, pharmaceuticals have never helped. It seems I'm just wired to be miserable.

For those watching from countries using other television standards, NTSC stands for "Never Twice the Same Color", and refers to a method where a black-and-white picture is transmitted, along with the number of degrees from a reference point on a color wheel, and the television set attempts to reconstitute this into a color picture.

That Marine Brigade you're going after the Roman Legion with? They're going to get the shits and die of it. Smallpox, plague, mumps -- get your shots, because we have no immunity. You're positing dragging your entire modern world with you into the past. That's not a mental game, that's alien invasion.
For cold starting, a properly-adjusted Carter automatic choke would outperform a variable-venturi any morning at 6. But they had to be cleaned every summer, and the carb set, and new plugs and points installed -- that could cost ten or twelve bucks, so it's no wonder people wouldn't stand for that.
I had a Benz with a Zenith on it. I bought it without being smart enough to realize that the Masters of the World in Stuttgart straight-up expected you to have the carb internals re-tuned between two and four times a year, by their technicians. That went a long way toward changing my mind about that line of cars.

Especially to run wire. The new optical sensors (near the bottom corners of the door) were a particular pain. I could run them up to the ceiling easily enough, but the door had to be closed in order to run them to the middle and back to the motor unit.

Yeah cthulhu, quite disappointing. Heinlein used the future as a plot device and setting; his interest was exploring the human condition. You will find no long winded explanations of personality transfer mechanisms, or FTL physics, or even immortality other than Mendelian genetics. The Old Testament has 600 year old humans too, if I recall.
Heinlein did evolve quite a bit in social liberalism over his career, but always he insisted on personal responsibility.

What do you suppose they'd make of it, back in 1959, to find out how much we pay for having TV piped into our homes via cable, and still have to watch commercials? Or, you know, our cars seldom rust out, get 50% better mileage, and then you show them the sticker price? We're about 25% over the inflation rate, so the 59ers will argue that just getting a new one every two years is worth it...

Besides that, technocrats are way, way, way too far into credentialism. "We're the best and brightest 'cause we've been to Harvard Law, we have Ph.D's, we've won Nobel prizes, we were at Yale...." and suchlike. Heinlein absolutely shredded such pomposity -- he revered and valued learning, but never insisted that it came from a single font.

sensors (near the bottom corners of the door) were a particular pain. I
could run them up to the ceiling easily enough, but the door had to be
closed in order to run them to the middle and back to the motor unit."

To access the ceiling between the door opening and the door opener, the door needs to be closed or it'd be in the way. So you have to wire up the walls with the door open ('cause junk), then close door and run wire sideways along the ceiling and back to the opener.

I give you the Series I E-type, with updrafts. And see your point.
The Benz was (and is) marketed as being reliable. You bought an MG because it was fun to work on. And you got to have a lot of fun.

There is a guy around the corner from me who has a collection of miniature cars -- as in, he can easily fit nine of 'em in a standard two-car driveway. He has a whole lot of fun. I think he even has one of these http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peel_Trident .

I sometimes wonder how far back in time I'd have to go before the casual knowledge I have of things would be cutting edge discovery. I know generally how DNA and replication work, but when would it be enough to be useful? The theory I know about aircraft and rocketry are pretty useless without hardware, and much of the theory is pretty old anyway.

Depends where you are in 1959. The first cable TV deployments in Colorado were only ten years later in 1969, bringing reliable reception to those customers for the first time. Where I grew up, Thousand Oaks, CA, had a cable deployment just a few years later. I remember the bill for Storer Cable to get 2 through 13 was $14 a month back around 1975. Without that cable service you were lucky if you got one or two channels, if any. There were a lot of big hills and small mountains between us and most of the broadcast towers in LA.
The VCR as a consumer product would have been remarkable but the first commercial VTR system was introduced by Ampex in 1956, for which they were awarded an Emmy in 1957. The Kitchen Debate between then-VP Nixon and Soviet leader Kruschev were recorded by an Ampex VTR in 1959.
Which reminds me, one of those laptops should have the 100 GB Wikipedia archive on board.

Thing is, you'd sort of have to hit a "sweet spot" with every bit of knowledge -- the point where you wouldn't be burned as a heretic but might still be considered seriously. And that "heretic" thing isn't just the Roman Catholic church.....

Similarly, just a bit of insight into steel manufacture, high carbon steels, and things like nitriding, would have been revolutionary 150 years ago.

I don't see that this has anything to do w/e-statements. All my accounts are on e-statements and they deliver PDFs of the paper statement you would receive in the mail that can be printed out and/or saved onto your HD. No way the bank could "delete" them.

The weird thing about VCRs is a thing that few of us ever deal with -- it's just like a regular magnetic tape recorder except that the read/write head is mounted on a wheel that spins diagonally across the tape -- so when the tape moves one inch, the head can scan multiple partial multi-inch paths. This allows wide mag tape to record oodles of data. There's an explanation with graphics here -- http://repairfaq.cis.upenn.edu/sam/icets/vcr.htm .

A little background on why you might want to keep actual paper bank
statements, even if they're tossed in a box you seldom look into.....

So you believe that a pdf reader can't be subverted? When was the last time you let your reader auto-update? Using Adobe? Have you checked to see how many times Adobe was compelled to do something for the NSA without telling anybody what they'd done?

Yep. But the fundamental issue is that banks keep their accounts completely electronically -- if they send you completely electronic data, what "real" is left to be reconciled? I'm a CPA, an auditor, and you always talk about reconciling to source docs.....what if all the source docs are queries off the same database? Of course everything will be consistent....and when the underlying database is modified improperly, everything will be consistent then, too. The Orwell quote @381 is one of the most astute observations ever made, and should give anyone pause who believes in electronic statements.

The issue runs way deeper than PDF readers and if you think your paper statement is some sort of protection, it could be rigged just as easily...

If you have a paper statement, it has a beginning balance, transactions, and an ending balance. The next paper statement should have a beginning balance that equals the previous ending balance, more transactions (which are not duplicates) and a new ending balance.
Transactions can be "disappeared" by rolling them into balances -- end balance period 1, $1000; beginning balance period 2, $900. They can be gamed by reflecting them twice -- check #123 clears for $100 in period 1; check #123 clears for $100 in period 2.
If you can change two adjacent statements, you can do anything you want to the account -- but if one has been printed on paper and shoved in a box, it can't be changed.

And basically this is what is done w/e-statements. They are printed then a PDF made and emailed. They look exactly like the paper statement, your source doc, because that is the original document. I think your a bit paranoid here, tampering could not happen and not be caught if one does one's due diligence.

If you do your own accounting or record tracking then it's your data against their data.
BTW a pdf sent thru the internet is still digital.
I keep the statement AND the envelop which has a USPS frank barcode in the corner showing who, where and when sent it. Which is another form of verification of my receipt of THEIR data at that time.
I'm in a tussle with the Electric company and with out the paper statements;
1) I couldn't have figured out what they were doing
2) I might've missed what they were doing
3) I have a record to look at when hassling with Customer service (and it contains more info than what's on the E-bill)
Just sayin hard copy's the way to go when dealing with massive corporations and bureaucracy.
