Applying Broken Windows Theory to Liberal Intolerance
When forbearance wears thin towards constant liberal hate...
Usually, it's in a situation where the insult is just tossed into the flow of a conversation - almost always in a group setting where the perp feels emboldened - and then the conversation moves in other directions. The rude barb just becomes part of the landscape.We've gone too long allowing a perjorative landscape.
It's why the most Senior Democrats feel free to call us the worst possible names and taunt us in a demeaning manner. They receive no pushback from our Senior politicians for the venom spewing from their mouths. We've become The Grand Old Punching Bag Party.
Compare the rude, vicious terms from Obama and his spokespeople, and Senior Democrats such as Harry Reid, Chuck Schumer, Dick Durbin, Nancy Pelosi and others, with the gentlemanly behavior of John Boehner and Mitch McConnell.
There is plenty of push back and name-calling on both sides at lower levels and on the blogosphere, but it's qualitatively different when it comes from The White House and the Democratic Party House and Senate leadership.
When the leadership of the Republican Party does not push back against the leadership of the Democratic Party for the name-calling and taunts, it's an invitation to more attacks, and it sets a national tone.
We've become punching bags. At dinner and at the highest political levels.
We need to do what Rudy Giuliani did to graffiti artists and squeegee guys, apply broken windows theory:
Social psychologists and police officers tend to agree that if a window in a building is broken and is left unrepaired, all the rest of the windows will soon be broken. This is as true in nice neighborhoods as in rundown ones. Window-breaking does not necessarily occur on a large scale because some areas are inhabited by determined window-breakers whereas others are populated by window-lovers; rather, one unrepaired broken window is a signal that no one cares, and so breaking more windows costs nothing.
What if you weren't so polite? What if you pushed back against every casual insult and made everyone just as uncomfortable as yourself? What if you refuse to accept even the minor broken windows of intolerance and hate?

Give it time...and check out the free stuff you can get at gutenberg.org, and the cheap, off-copyright stuff you can get, organized for you, for a couple of bucks on Amazon. My Kindle has all of Dickens, Twain, Kipling, and Doyle, along with a bunch of paid stuff. And if you ever travel for a long stint, it's really nice to bring 300 books along for less than 1 lb of the 50lb bag allowance they have now.

I'm with you, especially because today, clicking around Buzzfeed (I think) (yeah I know), I ran into an article about "How to be a Wall St Douchebag" (paraphrase)(yes they were serious that you might want to be this), and one of the things was basically how you can't just wear Hermes, you have to earn Hermes. Plus a bonus story about how some guy wore a Gucci belt, which was super-OK, except it had a "G" on it, so that was not OK.
Not living by the sort of rules that these people have is a minor pleasure of life.

To supplement this, I do carry a leatherman squirt e4 - the wire stripper is priceless, and the small screwdrivers complement the Gerber's big ones.
Have you heard of "Multitasker"? They build their multitool for the AR-15 crowd, but the tool itself is quite spiffy. Something about their design is different than what Leatherman or Gerber do. The steel they use is different, as well as the machining process.

Yes and yes. He likes the job for now, and it makes him happy (and so far he hasn't experienced any more PTSD in the wee hours, that we know of). He knows he wants to go to school again and make a career in logistics or something, but for now he's making money, happy, and we're leaving him alone.

A big believer in gloves. I wasn't too sure about all that nonsense until he showed me a retired set of his.
He had been helping move an engine block, and the unsecured crankshaft spun under its own weight at a certain angle. A crank that had previously been razor-knife-edged at the machine shop.
It cut a beautiful deep semicircle about the size of a fifty cent piece right into his set of HEAVY-ASS leather work gloves, just at the base of one thumb. The sort of thing that would have been a guaranteed emergency room trip if it happened to an actual hand. He just shrugged and cursed and retired the glove.

My thoughts on splitting wedges are that impatient people use them. My Father thought that when we cut the tree down all things to get it to the split stage had to happen that day. I have found the wedges aren't needed if I let the cut to fireplace length logs dry for at least 6 months. Some big trees still need them dry but not regular sized ones.

Eh - injuring yourself for no good reason is just dumb. You see we have these new fangled things known as "gloves" that protect your hands while working and they really do work. I highly recommend them.

TIGTA (Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration) are the Treasury arm that investigates IRS wrongdoing, and threats or bribery against IRS employees.
IRS auditors are not part of TIGTA, and TIGTA does not participate in audits, or collections. TIGTA was the agency that was releasing the scathing reports about IRS earlier this year (several of which were talked about here).
If TIGTA was out visiting this guy because of his TV appearance, it is likely based on allegations that he (or his client) was audited in retaliation for badmouthing Obamacare. In other words, TIGTA was looking into whether the IRS did something wrong. Either this guy knows this, and chose to misrepresent the meeting, or he "lawyered up" during the interview thinking it was an audit, and never learned the purpose of the interview.

But, the Colt Lightweight Commander (Series 70), is the last word on the subject. It is the Sean Connery to the Beretta's Pierce Brosnan.
Still, as I'm a fan of 9mm in compact carry pistols, the S&W Shield is superb, as is the Ruger LC-9.
And don't write off the offerings from Kahr Arms. Moonies or not, they make a fine gun.... especially after a 200+ round break-in run.

Interesting personal story from last week. I have one unabashed lefty friend on FB. He's not all bad/crazy however as he is very pro 2nd Amendment and only recently wrote on his feed *against* hate speech policies. He has some other good traits as well... he loves Corvettes and other classic American cars and is a decent hold'em player to boot.
Having said that... when he gets nasty about something, he gets nasty. And last week he was excorciating Fox News (which is ironic, as I've actually seen him post links to Fox News stories). Well maybe I shouldn't have but I brought out the usual "but you know MSNBC is just as bad" response. He then wrote some garbage about how MSNBC, in his opinion, isn't nearly as bad as Fox.
That's when I lost it on him and wrote something along the lines of "oh really? Like Bashir did with Palin? If a Fox person had said anything like that about any liberal woman, you'd still be screaming your head off. Thanks again for sharing your breathtaking partisan hypocrisy."
Well, I expected the guy to unfriend me or at least write me back some 10,000 word essay explaining why once again the liberal (him) is right and the conservative (me) is wrong. Instead his full response was, and I quote:
"That is your right."
I didn't know whether to laugh, cry, or pass out.

The old company I used to work for made radiation shielding. One of our projects was to build all the shielding for a forklift used to haul those decommissioned Russki nuke cores around.
That was one heavy forklift.

My son volunteers with her sometimes on her weekend shift. Everyone knows him, and he really gets serious about his "job". He'll clean all the lazyboys, restock the drinks and candy (after having some himself), and make sure the toiletries are perfectly lined up in the bathrooms. A Brig. Gen from the Pentagon even complimented him!

And, your objection still didn't clear the hurdle of the Colt Lightweight Commander being the ne plus ultra of the CCW underworld.
Not that I object to mouseguns, where applicable. I highly favor a factory or gunsmith tuned KelTec PA-380T as a deep concealment or just good ol' pocket gun (in a proper pocketgun holster, of course!) Strangely, the KelTec actually has more useable sights than the Ruger LCP380, which sights are best used by Braille.
Hell, for other than Khaki shorts and a tee-shirt carry, I'm just fine with my S&W M-28 Highway Patrolman in .357 Mag, with a 4" bbl. All you need is one kick ass belt to hold it. Dragon Leather Works, is a helluva good choice. So is Don Hume.
Final advice. Master the double action revolver trigger. Strong hand and weak. Accuracy first, then speed. Combine till thoroughly blended.
Do that, and any semi-auto trigger will be child's play.

I think it will be one of the storage rooms away from the USO. It's pretty small IMO, the main room. There is a nice little entertainment area with a big screen TV and about 20 lazyboys with all the drinks, candy, and power bars in the world. Still, I don't know how they will fit even half that number of Marines in that one room.
Maybe they'll show everyone how they sleep standing up, stacked 20 deep.

Stepson told me during basic, they will put 4 Marines into one portapotty to 'take care of business' during training. There's some standing, crouching, bending, and really close up and personal stuff that goes on when 4 Marines have to relieve themselves at the same time in the same portajohn.

We have a 2 holer outhouse at our cabin. My father tells me privacy was not a thing back in the day. 1000 sq ft houses 6-12 kids and a 2 holer you did what needed to be done even with Grandma. And it was normal. So I don't doubt that they do that to break our privacy issues. And a portajohn is a lot like a foxhole so the lesson may be of use.

Most of it cannot be polyurethaned (fits together, tolerances), but I'm thinking of doing the bed. One of the common tricks in 3D printing is to lay down blue painter's tape to print on, and continually putting it on and taking it off would be easier and cleaner if it weren't bare plywood (or stained bare plywood).

Oh, you want to cook a turkey ON a dutch oven, not IN one.....yeah, I do that sort of thing all the time. You want a high rack (like maybe bridged over the top of the thing) -- and you don't really want to retain juices too much (see "stewed bird" reference above).
I personally find that the best advice for roasting turkey is to make that you're flipping the bird -- either at the person who's coaching you through cooking turkey, or about an hour from the end of cooking -- start with the breast side down. And don't screw around with "turkey lifters" -- they're outright dangerous -- thick silicone mitts, like these: http://tinyurl.com/kp8l5pc. If you get the ones without cotton lining, you can put 'em in the dishwasher afterward.

My company produces videos about our products for our YouTube channel and we moderate all comments, deleting anything that veers into personal attacks and/or running down the competition.
When YouTube overhauled their site format several months ago, the “approve comments” setting was inadvertently deactivated without our knowledge. We uploaded a video late at night and were stunned by the negative comments that had been posted when we checked the video count the following morning. We immediately switched the comment approval setting back on and deleted all the negative comments.
A funny thing happened: we stopped receiving all the rude and disrespectful comments, and were able to approve virtually all comments. We figure we set the stage so that viewers know we won't post nasty stuff on our channel, so they behave accordingly.

I like the red/black possibilities, but some parts are going to have to stay pretty close to natural because the visual contrast is too useful. Get this, though -- they claim to have never developed a multi-level BOM! I'm going to have to develop my own just to be able to stain the right stuff the right color. I'm thinking red sides and a darker underbelly, light on the stage (with polyurethane on top). I can probably polyurethane the sides as well after it's assembled.

Having a removable tray can help with another issue -- getting items off of the stage. If I used something like aluminum, I could just stick the whole thing in the freezer and the object would probably pop off by itself.

And hoping that a cheap version used less dense plastic since it would be less strong but cheaper. I don't need these fixtures to hold up just keep something stable.

Short answer -- cheap ones use PLA. better ones use ABS (like lego bricks), but require a heated stage and more touchy temperature control. Most 3D prints are not quite hollow, being filled with mathematical webbing that behaves somewhat like foam -- it is trivial to adjust the density of this webbing (it's set as a percent). If your guys are making everything solid, it's because they're completely removed from costs.
Long answer -- get the Make Magazine 3D printer issue that just came out.

That's what I needed (I think) Cost aint so much an issue just the 3D printed fixtures I've seen so far interfere in interpretation.

Put a 90deg bend on one side of the tray, so it can be bolted to the table. Use 2 locating pins and 2 screws with knobs (4 holes, 2 with the pins glued in, 2 threaded. get some inserts from HF and glue them in).
You might need another piece on the opposite side, very short, that will catch the tray and keep it flat and non-moving.

This one's the "getting feet wet" model. I visited Type A Machine's HQ in San Francisco last year -- they had Make's "Best of Show" last year and seem like really good folks, but I decided to spend the year pursuing more of the machining angle. Then, this year, there's this PrintRBot micro printer.....
To be honest, I'm stealing the idea of staining the plywood parts from Type A -- a lot of places like the bare singed plywood "I just whomped this out" aesthetic, but you throw on a couple of teaspoons of stain and it's "I just whomped this out, and it's badass."

What I posted are not feelings or conclusions I just came to. I have felt this way about the cowardice of GWB since at least 2007. Especially the way in which he never ONCE took on the "truther" loons, thus legitimizing what can only otherwise be described as the modern equivalent of Holocaust denial.
Even today, the majority of voters (be they LIV or otherwise) believe more lies about GWB than truths, and its his own goddamned fault.

I live in Silicon Valley and have gone to -- I think -- all but one of the Maker Faires that there have been in the Bay Area, I've been the controller of semiconductor, robotics, and telecom companies. And I was hearing that this was the Next Big Thing....so I checked it out. I even had a travelogue of my journeys on the ONT at the time. I was this close *holds fingers a millimeter apart* to buying a 3D printer from Type A last year.....but ended up going a different way.
And, to expound just a little bit more....it is clear that we're not getting more control over our own destiny from socialist Democrats or "we'd like to prove ourselves more adept at running the welfare state" RINOs. The whole bizarre drama - Hadley, Rice, chief of staff whose name escapes me - he's from Maine, anyway - it is all still unbelievable. Wilson's wife? WTF? Who cares? The op-ed was idiotic and should have been obliterated - vituperatively and in detail, followed up with an attack on the "press" for not understanding intelligence matters, or even knowing how to do their jobs.
But this is also the template - the only serious one - for every interaction with the "press". Dubya was a catastrophic example, but 24/7/365 we are witnessing a similar disaster.

The thing is, the LIV that both parties compete for won't learn anything. Indigo dyeing or machining AR lowers -- they're stuck in front of their playstations drinkin' 40's.
The thing that hackers realized early on is that "data wants to be free". If you could have a kit-built gizmo where you could put in ethanol, water, saltpeter, and -- depending on the program -- have it cough-up 75% of common prescription drugs at useful purity, then those kits and those programs would get around, regardless of public policy.

I just found a comment I wrote back in August. The way the show unfolded makes sense because the show depicted a time when the trend was from lawlessness to more ordered civilization. Like it or not, we're currently accelerating in the opposite direction, and people need to be reexamining the validity of the morals drummed into us while coming up during better days that likely will never return.

In the upside-down world we were born into, the thugs get a hell of a lot more protection from the rest of us because of the law than the law provides the rest of us protection against the thugs. I watched an episode of "The Rifleman" the other night. In it, Lon Chaney played a bad guy named Charlie Gordo in the marshal's jail waiting for transport to the prison in Denver to be hanged. Gordo's minions started killing people to get Gordo released.
When the marshal's office came under siege at night, my first thought was that the marshal should kill Gordo immediately. If the thugs then succeed in overrunning the marshal and Lucas McCain, then at least the big boss is dead. On the chance that the marshal fends off the bad guys against the mighty steep odds, anybody with the bad form to ask later what happened to Gordo should be dragged out and shot.

That's similar to my usual thoughts during a show with the "bad guys take over a boat. Good guy captures one, puts in closet. Climactic scene with bad captain -- bad guy from closet shows up, drama!" -- my take is that any captured bad guys go over the side -- that way, they're several miles behind the boat and trying not to smell like shark bait when the big scene with the bad boss happens. I would never, ever, EVER keep a bad guy as prisoner if they had taken over my boat.
