Why the Arapahoe School Shooting Ended So Quickly
Because there was an armed deputy sheriff at the school who raced towards the shooting and ended the attack in just 80 seconds. Thanks to his quick response only one student (still in critical condition) was shot.
The rampage might have resulted in many more casualties had it not been for the quick response of a deputy sheriff who was working as a school resource officer at the school, Robinson said.Once he learned of the threat, he ran - accompanied by an unarmed school security officer and two administrators - from the cafeteria to the library, Robinson said. "It's a fairly long hallway, but the deputy sheriff got there very quickly."
He praised the deputy's response as "a critical element to the shooter's decision" to kill himself, and lauded his response to hearing gunshots. "He went to the thunder," he said. "He heard the noise of gunshot and, when many would run away from it, he ran toward it to make other people safe."
The deputy was yelling for people to get down and identified himself as a county deputy sheriff, Robinson said. "We know for a fact that the shooter knew that the deputy was in the immediate area and, while the deputy was containing the shooter, the shooter took his own life."
The shooter who was 18 apparently bought the shotgun legally and it turns out that he was an avowed socialist who was also anti-gun. But you'd never learn this fact if you only listened to the self-censoring MFM.
If You Like Your Checking Account, You Can Keep Your Checking Account (Minus a Lot of Money)
Giving the government direct access to your bank account via ObamaCare is going about as well as you'd expect.
Shannon Bruner of Indianola logged on to her checking account Monday morning, and found she was almost 800 dollars in the negative."The first thing I thought was, 'I got screwed,'" she said.
The Bruners enrolled for insurance on the Washington Healthplanfinder website, last October. They say they selected the bill pay date to be December 24th. Instead the Washington Healthplanfinder drafted the 835 dollar premium Monday.
One viewer emailed KING 5 saying, "They drafted my account this morning for a second time."
Do you have the right to know your own genetic code? The FDA says no - and wants to regulate genetic testing.
The people of Detroit pretty much - who kept electing governments that paid out 13 monthly checks per year even though only 12 were budgeted and who guaranteed city workers a high return on their savings no matter what.
Most press accounts note that city-worker pensions in Detroit are modest. They rarely mention that, for two decades, the city supplemented those pensions with annual, so-called "13th checks" for retirees-an additional monthly pension payment. Pension-fund trustees-themselves city workers, retirees, city residents, and elected officials-handed out nearly $1 billion in these annual payments to retirees in the city's general pension fund.
...In 2009, for instance, the pension system gave workers a 7.5 percent return on their savings, even though pension assets slumped by 24 percent. In its report, Conway MacKenzie called such payments "an abuse of discretion" and noted that the trustees, who determined the yearly guaranteed return, were "effectively robbing (the General pension fund) of precious funds necessary to support the traditional pensions the city had promised."
So to help keep that risk at bay, the man has spotlights all over his home and garage, he as a security system, you have to get through one screen door just to reach his fortified front door. He has two watch dogs and bars on every window and he has his dummies.
"A car will come by and they pick my place because I keep it nice. They'll slow down, see the dummies and take off. They come back around and look again. Eventually if they figure out they are dummies they are also figuring out that now they're being watched. They keep moving. They don't stop," he said. "What's behind those dummies? You have to ask that. If you get past the lights, alarm, dogs, doors and dummies, then you have another problem, you have to deal with me. My home is my castle."
Well it seemed to work for the Omega Man.
It's not looking good for the A-10. Despite its usefulness and effectiveness the USAF has never been fond of the plane and has long hoped to replace it with something sexier.
So why retire such a valuable aircraft? The answer is rooted in the world of shrinking budgets and service rivalries that often characterize battles over military roles and missions. After World War II, the Army made occasionally forays to take complete control of the CAS mission, arguing that their platforms should provide most of the support for friendly troops on the ground. According to the Army, it should be their pilots flying support missions for ground units in contact, and not the Air Force....Unfortunately, the A-10 has been the big, ugly symbol of the CAS debate since its conception in the 1960s. The USAF only built it in the first place, it is argued, to deflect the Army's attempt to take over the mission with the fast and costly AH-56A Cheyenne compound helicopter. Now, say the boot-centric warfare believers, the USAF wants to dump CAS completely.
True, the A-10 isn't the only arrow in the CAS quiver. But can anyone name a platform--current or planned--that will do the Warthog's job with the same efficiency and effect? Get back to us when you have an answer.
That argument is off-target. In the last 10 years, the USAF and its allies have provided CAS using fighters, helicopters and gunships....within this family, the A-10 is different but not unique. What it brings to the party is better persistence than a supersonic fighter, lower cost per hour and-its advocates argue that this is crucial-flight characteristics that are better suited to operations beneath an overcast."

Why Airports Are Having to Renumber Their Runways
Because the Earth's magnetic field is constantly shifting.
As earth's magnetic north pole wanders from its geographic north pole, its magnetic field also changes in different ways for different parts of the world, and it's difficult to predict where the field will shift enough to make a difference for airports. In the past few years, Stansted Airport in London and a handful of airports in Florida, including Tampa's, have also had to renumber their runways.
These small shifts in earth's magnetic field are inconvenient for aviation, but they're nothing compared to a complete flip of the north and south poles. This has happened hundreds of times in earth's history, the last time 780,000 years ago. It's hard to say exactly what will happen-we humans have never lived through one-but it will definitely affect more than runway signage.

1. Because it's a steampunk player in a Tron universe. For one thing, it isn't interconnected with all the comm links that use Blue Force Tracker to identify all the ground units.
2. "CAS is a mission, not a platform." The Army has over 650 Apache helicopters that it could use for CAS.
3. Keep in mind that the last 10 years have been a bit of an aberration. The Army went in *very* light, without its usual complement of artillery, which it bought to put a ring of fire and steel around its troops. This required the Air Force to offset the Army's lack of organic firepower.
4. The Air Force has to cut something. It can no longer keep "peanut-butter-spreading" the cuts across all systems; it's to the point where the only real savings will be found by retiring complete systems. And this trumps everything in DC, where everything is about the dollar.

Mike, if it hasn't been answered already, molten rock from volcanoes becomes slightly magnetized as it freezes, and that magnetism is in phase with the Earth's field. So if you have an oriented sample of ancient rock, you can measure the remanent magnetism, and deduce the polarity of the Earth's field at the time it crystallized. This has been done in exhaustive detail along the mid-Atlantic spreading ridge, and other ocean ridges, and the lines of alternating magnetism look like a bar code, or what a digital computer tape would look like if you sprinkled magnetic dust on it.

Does it? I thought it precessed (like a spinning top) and then flopped over.....so that there's always a North and South magnetic pole, but it starts tracking through temperate, then tropical regions. Mind you, that might mean you see the Northern Lights in Kenya for a night or two, but it doesn't leave one hemisphere blasted with radiation.

The flip doesn't appear to take any great amount of time. Looking at zones of continuous seafloor lava deposition, a band of "normal" lava is flanked by bands of "reversed" lava, with no "zero" or "sideways" lava being found. Which is probably why there don't seem to be mass extinction events associated with pole reversals. There are many, many more pole reversals than there are mass extinctions, and there doesn't appear to be any correlation.

Yeah, that gun just sounds absolutely EVIL.
The biggest problem with the A-10 is that pilots can't just drop ordnance quickly and climb to altitude in order to play fighter ace, which is what every gorram F35 pilot is gonna do once they replace the 'Hog.
It's time to retire the Key West Agreement and transfer the 'Hogs to the Army. Both the grunts and the 'Hog pilots will be happier.

I remember talking to a an AF pilot at an Air Show in 1983 about what he was flying, and he used to fly A-10's but was now an instructor flying T-38's. He said the Air Force was transistioning pilots out of A-10's because they weren't going to keep it.
In 1983. There are a lot of people (read Colonels and Generals) in the AF that will be just happy as clams that the A-10 is being retired at last.

This'll be the third or fourth time the AF brass has seriously tried to kill the A-10. Most famously in the late '80s, an effort which was instantly shot down when the 'Hogs kicked ass in Gulf War I.

It's possible. AFAIK, they don't know exactly how long it takes, just that in geologic time, it's probably very short. But, geo time is a long ass scale. There doesn't appear to be a link to multiple extinctions, but, a flip may not be a walk in the park for a species.

That's a tough paper to read, because the translation is so poorly done. Nobody took the effort to clean up the resulting English and make it grammatically correct. But it all sounds pretty speculative to me. Obviously, more research has to be done. One thing is certain: we know we are overdue for a pole flip, because the Earth has long history of pole flips. You can make book on it, as long as you don't specify a time. not like global warmening.

Lots of air to air, worldwide since 1973. Not much involving the US.
Scott Speicher was shot down and killed by a MiG-25 on the first night of the Gulf War. About 30-40 Iraqi aircraft were shot down in air to air combat during the war.

I think that's an angle that has good potential for storytelling.

top) and then flopped over.....so that there's always a North and South
magnetic pole, but it starts tracking through temperate, then tropical
regions. Mind you, that might mean you see the Northern Lights in Kenya
for a night or two, but it doesn't leave one hemisphere blasted with
radiation.

I was kind of thinking of a dynamic where the speed of the precession was increased the farther the magnetic pole was from a rotational pole. To put this in perspective, the north magnetic pole was at 81.3N 110.8W in 2001; it had moved to 83.1N 117.8W in 2005; kept right on going to 84.9N 131.0W by 2009; and was estimated to be at 85.9N 147.0W in 2012. It's moving about 34-37 miles per year. [Hmmm....it's actually closing in on the rotational center, which is 90N <anything>....]
But I had envisioned the change as something where it would move 35 miles a year within 10 degrees of the rotational pole, maybe 70 miles a year until it was 20 degrees off, 140 miles a year at 30, and so on -- until it had to be moving at over 40,075 kilometers per day when it hit the equator [because that's the circumference of the earth, and it would still need some north/south speed]. In terms of geologic events, the entire process could take years and still not be "a great amount of time".

Airmen don't just jump in their cockpits and go wherever they want to go and strike whatever they want to strike, just as the Soldier doesn't just go over the berm and smash whatever's in front of him. Both work for the Joint Force Commander who sets priority, timing, and effects for all the components -- air, sea, and ground. If the JFC wants the AF to provide gobs of CAS, the Airmen will salute smarty and make it so. Philosophical debates occur up to the point the JFC decides what he wants his forces to do. Then everybody executes accordingly.
Airmen understand the emotional attachment the grunts have for the A-10. But CAS isn't the only thing the AF has to be capable of providing.

Yeah, geologists are all about time. But that's what is nifty about the seafloor spreading ridges. Upwellings of lava occur more or less continuously. We have video taken down there, now. So say, a pole reversal occurs, and it takes 10 calendar years to stabilize in the new orientation. There should be some bands, maybe a few meters wide, of freshly-cooled lava with no remanent magnetism, or with magnetism at some oblique angle to a nominally north-south polarity. As far as I know, there just doesn't seem to be any. Could it be a sampling problem? Are we not getting enough samples close to reversal boundaries? I don't know for sure, but scientists are curious people, and I would think that searching for zones of null or off-axis magnetism would be a big priority. Whoever discovered it would get a big feather for their cap. (As indeed would whoever managed to show that the magnetic flips were ALWAYS so fast as not leave a signature in sea-floor lavas.)

The F-15 is next, you know. The Air Force doesn't want rid of it, but they're getting long in the tooth and the cost per hour goes up every year. Not to mention that the bomber we have the most of is older than most of you.
Let's just say that the people in their wisdom turn to you, gentle commenter, to be in charge of allocating funding that grows slower than the inflation rate, to cover missions that are dumped on you (like Equality For All, for instance). Just exactly what would you do? And after you kill all the generals, what would you do then?

But CAS isn't the only thing the AF has to be capable of providing.
And yet, the AF has consistently refused to give up the CAS mission to the Army, even to free up resources to perform their other, essential duties. They only grudgingly gave up the rotary wing CAS mission because it wasn't specifically prohibited to the Army in the KW Agreement. The history of armed helicopters in the US military is pretty eye-opening.

Bullets and cannon shells have zero maneuverability and have long'ish time to target, and missiles have a much higher control surface loading than a drone does. All the drone has to do is wait for the missile to get kinda close, then turn inside the missile's envelope. The missile won't be able to turn as tight as the drone and will overshoot. Lather/rinse/repeat until the missile runs out of fuel.

Does anyone have plans to see Saving Mr. Banks? Frankly it looks like the last kind of movie Disney would ever make these days, a flick where the rich white male conservative (in this case, Walt Disney himself) turns out to be at least somewhat the "good guy" versus a shrill, way-too-serious-minded author who also happened to have been a lesbian (P.L. Travers, although thankfully her bisexual past seems to have been eliminated from the film).
In the meantime, went ahead and got the blu-ray of Mary Poppins. Frustrating that Disney Video lets these flicks go out of print (have you seen what a three-year old blu-ray of Fantasia is going for?!?).

Animal life was already fairly complicated before it, but not as easily fossilized. The Ediacaran Fauna or whatever the frak it was is still pretty mysterious.
The Snowball Earth period may have nudged the Cambrian Poof.
Posted by: eman at December 16, 2013 12:14 AM
The Vendian species is still relatively mysterious, yes. But mostly in regard to what it was exactly... were they a closely related, were they more a bunch of existing/known types... were they a whole other branch of life? It's still being debated, with more nodding to strange, but already known types. However, as slight as the record is, compared to the Cambrian, they have a pretty decent number of larger types. Not a plethora, but much healthier than there used to be. Some hung on for awhile, until the early, even mid Cambrian IIRC, but, the overhwelming majority got hammered at the VC boundary.
The Cryogenic period happened a long time before the Cambrian, I don't think it would have played much part, if any. Could be wrong though. It was an extreme period.

No, I wouldn't -- and this is a reason (besides Pixy's peculiarities) why I generally quote the entire bit I'm commenting on. If the best damned plane out there for CAS were exclusively in the US, wouldn't anyone wonder just WTF people were anticipating? F-16s have a variety of missions that anyone could easily come up with that would apply all over the US, but A-10's?
And, BTW, if you read clearly between the lines, you will note that I said "using them in North America". I, personally, know the difference between that and "using them against US citizens" and chose my words carefully. It would be a rational thing to do if we were facing an impending flotilla of Chinese landing craft hitting the west coast.....but are we really? Are we talking about helping Canada out with a flood of yetis coming over the pole? Are we going to need CAS to defend the Rio Grande some time soon? Moving the A-10 to an exclusively National Guard role would indicate some serious batshit crazy in the planning loop.

No it wouldn't. It would mean that they don't see enough use of CAS in the near future to justify active duty squadrons. Considering that the war in Afghanistan is winding down, that's not completely unreasonable. They could still call up an Air National Guard squadron as necessary to support operations somewhere in the world.

I had a TI57 that I loved before I bought my first HP. Well, actually, it was the Radio Shack equivalent; a TI57 with Radio Shack badging all over it.
Mine got destroyed because I got carried away experimenting with the programming feature. I found that if you shorted the keyboard lines, you could occasionally get an unusual/impossible keystroke entered into a program.
After many rounds of such fun, it died on me in the middle of a state FBLA accounting competition. When I pressed a key, it would just light up a segment of the display instead of doing anything. Had to finish the competition by hand. I didn't do well.
Bought an HP32E after that and never looked back. I still have the 32E somewhere, if I knew in which box to look.

It might also indicate an intent to preserve the fleet and all necessary support and logistical functions in the face of politics.

I agree that we are pressed today and will be sorely pressed tomorrow to safeguard our lives, effects, in institutions from the rampaging Federal Leviathan....and would love to think that states might step back from the abyss and take some responsibility for such preservation when the Feds don't....but I don't see it. The only state with the gumption and resources to save the A-10 by de-nationalizing it might be Texas, and that'd still be a huge project for them to undertake. Furthermore, it's only one small piece of the overall military. It'd be like West Virginia throwing all-in to preserve Marine NCO swords if the Feds discontinued 'em.

I'm going to hazard a guess and say the thing that is killing the A-10 is maintainability. Like the old Tomcat, an aircraft I loved, but it was a maintenance nightmare. I think before they retired the 'cats they were taking something like 21 hours of maintenance per flight hour (keeping in mind that a one hour inspection involving 2 maintainers is 2 maintenance hours, multiply that by two or three shops, then the turnaround inspections, it's not hard to log 10 maintenance hours in a 1 hour turnaround cycle if nothing needs to be fixed). I'm guessing the A-10 is similar.
This is what happens when you have high-time airframes, it's not the frame that gets you it's the wiring and etc. not to mention trying to keep up with the avionics. Some of the Toms still had vacuum tube radios (they were at places like Pax River, but they were still there). And the Tom wasn't even an extreme case, we have/had P-3s that were older than the aircrews that flew them, and if you really want to have your mind blown, look up the first year of operations for the BUFF (B-52). THAT's a high-time airframe, and some of those airframes are still in service. Not many that old, true, but there are a few, and the newest ones of them aren't exactly spring chickens.
I know lots of ground pounders that will cry big alligator tears when the A-10 goes, but it will have to fly off into the sunset sooner or later.

Of course they'll have to go sooner or later. The problem is that there's no decent replacement and the AF doesn't seem interested in providing one, instead offering up the F-35 boondoggle instead.

Can't just paint the USAF with that brush. Marines and Navy are getting them, too. Of course the Marine version is supposed to have a honking great fan in the middle of it that isn't working out too well, and the USN isn't real thrilled with the idea of going back to a single engine aircraft.
Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde, NC Chapter at December 15, 2013 09:09 PM (xa1/W)
From the Wikipedia OV-10 page:
Boeing has recently put together plans internally to build a modernized, improved version of the Bronco, called the OV-10X, to satisfy an Air Force requirement for a light attack plane. ... Boeing indicates that international interest in restarting production is growing, to compete with other light attack aircraft such as the T-6B Texan II, A-67 Dragon, and EMB 314 Super Tucano.
... On 3 February 2010, during the Singapore Air Show, Boeing announced that the international interest for the aircraft was such that it would go on with its development even in the case it failed to win the USAF tender for 100 Light Attack/Armed Reconnaisance aircraft.

No it wouldn't. It would mean that they don't see enough use of CAS in the near future to justify active duty squadrons. Considering that the war in Afghanistan is winding down, that's not completely unreasonable. They could still call up an Air National Guard squadron as necessary to support operations somewhere in the world.
Posted by: Colorado Alex at December 16, 2013 12:51 AM (lr3d7)
Right, but as I was saying above....the concept on the table was transferring the AF squadrons to the NG, so that we'd have some weird multiple of what any person might think we needed based in a non-expeditionary mode in the US.
I fully realize that the names of military forces are whacked -- and there's some base that keeps cropping up in anecdotes where the air support is handled by the Navy, base security and operations are an Air Force responsibility, and the Army is tasked with keeping surface ships away -- and I'm totes aware that we've been using National Guard all over the place in the post-9/11 "stretched years" -- but there is a reason that these services are distinct, and that is very closely linked to why the military of the United States is under civilian control.
