Woo Hoo - We're Number 8!!

In John Hawkin's annual ranking of the top 40 conservative web sites of 2013. No one knows exactly how they're calculated but I can definitely state that after viewing the ever paltry AoSHQ coffers that no graft or payola was involved on our part. :-(

Now #7 Instapundit is not going to an easy target to take down for next year - he is a freakin' juggernaut of blogging. But as fearsome as he can seem we do know that he has a few weaknesses - primarily an inordinate fondness for gadgets, chocolate, and Ann Althouse. Come on people - let's use this knowledge and our animal cunning to claw our way up to #7 in 2014.

Remember - in the end there can only be one!

 The Turtle-Lies of Obamacare

'Obamacare was sold on a trinity of lies."

That ornate phrase, more suitable for the Book of Revelations or perhaps the next installment of Game of Thrones, comes from my National Review colleague Rich Lowry. But I like it. Most people know the first deception in the triumvirate of deceit: "If you like your health insurance you can keep it, period." The second leg in the tripod of deception was "If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor."

But the third plank in the triad of disinformation hasn't gotten much attention: Obamacare will save you, me, and the country a lot of money. This lie took several forms.

...Obamacare may have been sold on a trinity of lies, but it turns out it's also lies all the way down.

Columnist: Hey Let's Give Marijuana to Young People Who Sign Up For Obamacare

Among other prizes and major awards.

First, announce and advertise that everyone between the ages of 18 and 34 who enrolls on the health-care exchanges by the end of the year is automatically entered in a lottery. Winners will receive everything from a free iPhone or iPad to a full-year of health-care underwritten by Uncle Sam. Refer a friend and get a discount. Buy one (year), get one free. In states that have legalized marijuana for recreational use - Colorado and Washington - by all means, throw in a bag of cannabis.

But here's why they ultimately won't - pot or no pot:

Average premiums for young people will range from $157 to $201 a month, which comes out to $1,884 to $2,412 per year. (This doesn't account for deductibles, copays, etc.) Most uninsured young people don't have that extra cash lying around - or if they do, they would prefer to spend it elsewhere.

To Question the Existence of 'Rape Culture' Is Rape Culture

Much has been said about the campus "war on rape" and the way it imperils students' due process rights, but there is another casualty as well: the free exchange of ideas on college campuses when it comes to the subject of sexual offenses.

A particularly revealing recent example comes from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.  On November 5, Katherine Krueger, editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, The Badger Herald, ran a long piece explaining why the previous day's edition had featured a letter to the editor from a student named David Hookstead questioning the existence of "rape culture." Krueger wrote that she had made the decision to run the letter "after careful deliberation and debate with our managing editor and opinion editors."

The fact that Krueger felt the need to justify the letter's publication is remarkable enough; but the reason she gave for publishing it was even more striking.  Hookstead's letter, you see, was an object lesson in "what rape culture looks like," since it expressed "morally repugnant, patriarchal and offensive" views that are "an embodiment of rape culture" itself.

You know just like computer code.

The Many Benefits of Owning a Sailboat

As described in an ad for a 27 foot sailboat ($5000 or best offer). Remember a boat isn't just a cash-hungry declining asset - it's also a bank account-draining lifestyle.

What does captian kurt [sic], popeye, captain hook and tommy lee have in common? They are all bad ass people. Why? Because they were all in command of ships. You should be in command of a ship. You should buy my boat. I can offer you the opportunity to be in command of this Catalina 27 sailing ship for about the cost of a lot of the stupid stuff you bought, buy or are thinking about buying.

...I understand you have many options on how to spend your free time. How you choose to recreate says a lot about a human being. What I am offering you is the open Pacific Ocean, fishing, going to islands, breathing salty air at sea, breathing atomic four gas powered exhaust fumes, drinking rum, drinking whiskey, drinking cheap beer, drinking expensive beer, drinking the dead sea monkeys floating in the drink that your friend backwashed, spear fishing anything that moves, endless supply of gold colored fish to make into tacos, trapping crabs, getting crabs, free membership to hbyc, a money pit, a fist pumping teeth grinding laser eating dance platform, a new kitchen, a boom that might hit you in the head, a $270 slip fee, the ability to t-bone a stand up paddle boarder, the ability to bbq a t-bone steak, the ability to bone in the v-birth, the chance to see whales, the improved chance to bring a whale out of najas and tying knots. These are fine things. These are gentlemanly things. They certainly beat sitting in car traffic towing your sand rail or three wheeler past a bunch of meth labs to glamis or driving a boat in circles in the std filled cess pool commonly referred to as "the river" or any other so called lake. Does a real man or woman want to recreate in a standing pool of "fresh water" or in a hot desert with a bunch of drunk yahoos with engines strapped to their backs?

And you know what's better than buying a boat? Getting a friend to buy a boat - so be sure and pass this ad on to him.

George Takei, Top Amazon Reviewer

Apparently George Takei spends a lot of his time tweeting and the rest reviewing products on Amazon, making himself a Top-1000-Reviewer and probably the Top-50-Funniest-Reviewers. Here is his review of the inflatable human hamster ball:

When Brad asked what I wanted for my birthday, I said "jet pack," just like I have for the past four years. Now, Brad thinks I'm too far into my "Golden Years" to strap on any kind of propulsion unit, so each year his gifts have been disappointing: A bow-tie. A snuggie. Gel insoles.

Imagine my delight when I came home to the ZORB HUMAN HAMSTER BALL in our back yard. "Not as good a jet pack," Brad noted, shrugging. "But safer."

Brad was a bit winded after blowing it up for six hours (I recommend an air pump), so we left it inflated. We strapped it to our car roof using the 120 left-over bungee cords from our home bungee jumping kit (I would NOT recommend this product). We then drove up to the Hollywood Hills sign for a test roll.

A Cop Does Good

The Baltimore Humane Society honored Officer Dan for compassionate service this week for his actions in rescuing a Pit bull after responding to a call about a "vicious" dog on the loose this past May.

For those that don't know his story, Officer Dan arrived on the scene and and saw a Pit bull being chased by kids who were throwing glass bottles at him. He called the dog over to him, and the Pit bull came over, sat next to him and began licking him affectionately. After taking the dog to the Baltimore Animal Rescue & Care Shelter (BARCS), he ended up adopting the dog a few days later and named him Bo.

66 The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently enflamed drivers in Fort Worth, Texas when drivers came upon a roadblock and were asked to participate in a “voluntary” testing of their DNA. Uniformed policeman with flashing lights and roadblocks flagged drivers off the road and directed drivers to an adjacent parking lot where they were asked to "voluntarily" consent to a DNA test. None of the drivers had done anything wrong, they merely happened to be traveling on a road that was being used to conduct the NHTSA National Roadside Survey. The federal government has already spent $7.9 million to research the number of impaired or drunk drivers on the road. http://blogs.christianpost.com/friday-tidings/dna-tests-at-government-roadblocks-18965/ Soona posted about this. As soon as you roll down that window, even if you decline the test, if the officer smells any alcohol or other substances, you probably won't get a choice anymore if you take a test or not. 109 The fact that Krueger felt the need to justify the letter's publication is remarkable enough; but the reason she gave for publishing it was even more striking.  Hookstead's letter, you see, was an object lesson in "what rape culture looks like," since it expressed "morally repugnant, patriarchal and offensive" views that are "an embodiment of rape culture" itself.

122 15 DAYS TIL THE BAN ON INCANDESCENT LIGHT BULBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! today i stopped by my local Costco ( actually not the local one, but the bigger one that sells liquor), to check out on stocking up on bulbs. Sadly they no longer sell incandecants, but I hoped they had a good price on LED's, because unlike the mercury shit , they are good. But $18 for an LED flood is a bit high. My house has close to 50 recessed ceiling floods - mosts on dimmers which I prefer- so do the math -fuck that. so I went to Home depot and purchased a few boxes of dozen old fashioned bulbs. There was a middle class female shopper who i began to chat with who complained that her cfc didn't last long and was UNAWARE of the ban or why there would be a ban. I wonder how many people are aware that they'll be spending 10-20 dollars per good bulb soon or will be stuck with the cfc shit? Im glad I stocked up on bulbs , but am disappointed with the cost of LEDs. they may be the future , but the prices aren't dropping , and I wonder will they? If I replaced all my bulbs with them ( $900) , they'd provide good light for 20 years. But Ill be out of the house by then or maybe be dead. If they last as long as claimed , I won't be replacing them and there will be little profit incentive for companies to mass produce them . so maybe the prices won't fall much. what happens if i stay in a rental for two months, will I spend $20 for a light there? would anyone?

163 "Average premiums for young people will range from $157 to $201 a month, which comes out to $1,884 to $2,412 per year. (This doesn't account for deductibles, copays, etc.) " Those premiums are for the lowest level of insurance. The deductibles and copays are such that if you need the insurance for something like a trip to the emergency room, you are probably going to pay the whole thing out of pocket. One of them had a deductible of $5,800. I can't remember if the co-pays even count toward the deductible. They may be in addition to it. In comparison, my insurance that I got from BCBS through my previous employer had a deductible of $750 per year, and the co-pays were much lower.

177 Have you not noticed her extended series of great work on Obamacare? Obama wouldn't appreciate it, but I do. Posted by: Splunge If she was that intelligent and had any personal intellectual integrity, she could have written that stuff 3 years ago. But she did not, because it would not have been acceptable at the Atlantic at the time. She writes it NOW because they have allowed her to write it because the reality of Obamacare is such that opposition is somewhat popular, and the Atlantic is hedging their bets. Reading the comments indicates that a lot of Atlantic readers don't like this at all. If she had written this three years ago, they would have been unanimously against her, and she would have gotten bounced from her job. Yet, it would have meant something then if there had been more intellectual honesty at that time, and might have gotten Obama un-elected. But that would have been double -plus ungood, from the Liberal Establishment. The will fight tooth and nail to keep socialized medicine, and Hillary will be their new champion in 2015 campaigning to save them from the troglodyte Republicans in 2016.

I am fully in support of this! To allow valuable a valuable series of tubes that are somehow involved in disseminating knowledge to be clogged by such doubters of science. Some type of “climate change” is happening in the future and the science is apparently settled. Why, allowing such ridiculous comments would be like allowing fools to suggest that the Earth revolves around the Sun! In both cases, the science is settled. Perhaps small improvements can be made by adding epicycles here or there, but the basic facts are absolute and unquestionable. As such, I applaud this “Reddit” and this "/r/science" for standing up against those who would doubt them!

Light bulbs are filled with Argon instead of being vacuum now. What if one made a base unit with replaceable tungsten filaments inside the globe? Yes it would be spendy but if we formed clubs or had the spendier equipment at a store that made their money from the filaments as a loss leader for great customers. It might just work. I use replaceable filaments in X-ray systems and Scanning electron microscopes. And these niche filaments are for $200K equipment cost as little as $14. Just to poke them in the eye would be worth it. IIRC Edison's bulbs were built this way in the beginning.

USAA is a great company.

343 The MLS (soccer) team in Houston are the Houston Dynamo. The original name, though, was announced with great fanfare Houston 1836. The name was to celebrate Texas independence. The name was quickly changed to Dynamo, though, after a media controversy when the name "Houston 1836" was declared racist and anti-Mexican by hispanic protesters.

Well AoS is already #7 and Instapundit is #6. One should take DrudgeReport off the list for two reasons:

1) Lifetime achievement award. Drudge is in a class by himself just on his editorial/pictorial juxtaposition of the liberal state of mind.

2) His site is more newspaper than blog. Drudge is what WaPo is not.

I won't be able to renew the policy in 2015, but who knows what the insurance marketplace will look like then? I'm so relieved to know that I've got something in place that's affordable come January 1.

The four-minute piece, which used high-tech motion sensors and accelerometers to measure the quarterbackÂ’s forced and ill-advised throws, revealed that Romo possesses the exceptional ability to fuck up in just 0.64 seconds. The segment also sought to explain the physics involved in Romo haphazardly chucking a perfect spiral directly into the hands of an opposing cornerback.

“We observed Romo missing 98 percent of our targets,” Brenkus said. “While studying the footage, we were able to determine that his capacity to make poor decisions in less than a second greatly influence why he’s so imprecise.”

“There’s not a quarterback in the NFL who can make a mistake as quickly as Romo,” Brenkus added.

Yes but you have Daddy issues. The Lesbian girl next door when I was growing up dated Manly girls. And is now married with children. Yes anecdotal but she brought home the most obvious ones. 516 Right, I don't mean the geography they hope to attract, I was just referring to the actual geographic terms they include in the team names. It's mostly cities, some states, and then the rare regional term like New England or Golden State. Actually are those the only two? I guess technically Tampa Bay is a region, right? Tampa is the city.

564 In re auto insurance and GEICO:

Those of you who have received a traffic ticket courtesy of a cop with a radar gun may well have GEICO to thank for it.

After Warren Buffett took over that outfit, he realized that more traffic tickets and more points on drivers' records meant that GEICO could charge higher premiums. So he graciously undertook to buy radar guns for thousands of police departments across the country. For the public good, you understand.

I would ride a tired-out bicycle uphill in the snow both ways before I would insure a car with Buffett's GEICO. Add to which that Buffett has been a huge Obama backer going back to the very beginning? Fuck the bicycle. I'll walk. Barefoot.

586 "Most Sushi places have lots more than just Sushi to offer...but why anyone would want anything but good sushi is beyond me."

The fundamental problem in the USA is finding "good" sushi that actually is what it claims to be. There have been a couple of surveys which used DNA analysis to figure out what was actually being served, versus what was claimed to be being served.

Typically, stuff that was described as being the likes of top grade tuna often actually turned out to be bottom feeding garbage fish.

National epicenter for this mislabeling of sushi? New York City.

597 an odd aspect of living in nyc is you have to know who you are dealing with. I know everyone I deal with on a regular basis by their first name - from my grocer to the people that serve me coffee to the manager at my steak place. if you want to get the good stuff, or not the bad stuff, you have to know 'em. I did not grow up in ny, but in flyover land and it took me a while to get the difference. in flyover land you always got what you asked for and it was not big deal.

I suspect that it's not rape in particular, but the thought that some violent crimes should receive an earthly version of Dante's seventh circle.

Of course Dante thought these folks should be partially submerged in a river of blood and fire, shot with arrows by demons when they raised themselves too far from their just punishment.....but, y'know, takin' it up the squeakhole.

625 The problem is that we have a seriously screwed-up "justice" system, which not infrequently slaps wrists for truly heinous offenses by truly awful people...but that doesn't exactly get fixed by making the experience of incarceration worse for everyone there.>>

I agree there should be tiers of incarceration.

1 Nonviolent crime offenses is more like a campus you are not allowed to leave. Hardly any guards. An Honor system.

2 Semi violent offenses that put no one in mortal danger (not including rape)A secluded farm with high fences but still limited guards you are not allowed to leave.

3 Violent offenses and or repeated dumbassery An island like Devils Island from Papaillon or a gulag you can't escape due to nature. And fuck you figure this civilization thing out between each other.

And severe punishments like kicking you to the next tier if you're a dick or try to run off.

Today, we've seen better days, and good reasons, and solid principles, and good feelings, and prosperity and the great majority of people being happy with their healthcare....and its all going into the meatgrinder. We can see it and complain, but BHO's shoving it in and Reid's turning the handle, and the bureaucracy is taking everything we hold dear -- from jobs to light bulbs to healthcare to light and heat in the darkness of winter -- and it's gonna come out hamburger.

Or this comic: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2010/8/11/ Which caused a three year campaign of intimidation and harassment against the writers? Yeah, sometimes "don't drop the soap" jokes are funny. But even when they're not, they're not worse than: Cuba. Child prostitution by the government. "Come rape our children for money." Afghanistan. 9-year-old bride. Raped by her "husband", died of internal bleeding the next day. And on and on. Dozens of real rape cultures in the world. The US isn't one of them.

There was a couple at our fish club that hailed from Singapore. People seldom lock their houses.....so that they can sometimes call their neighbors to shut off the stove. It's a weird combo of Ozzie and Harriet and 1984. We had a CNC rep who would talk about how banquets would be taxed on the amount of excess food.

721 All right you cretins, coffee break is over. Back on your heads.

Waaay up yonder in the comments, Nip Slip provided a link to GoodShit, a blog I have visited before. But it has been a while, so I went back.

Hot nude pics notwithstanding, Nip's description of the site owner as 'a bit lefty' leaves a whole lot to be desired. We have stories of NJ teachers that give up their careers to become organic farmers (hint -- even with $200k in parent investment money, they are losing their asses), a research biologist bitching about the quality of reading material found in the field (Louis L'Amour, oh the humanity!), and best of all, an article from The Atlantic by Beth something or other about 'welfare queens'.

Strap your sanity down tight, folks, you're about to enter The Liberal Zone. We find out that white people receive more SNAP bennies than black people do, 45% to 23%, except there is absolutely no mention of their relative prevalence in the US population. We find out that 'astoundingly', 25 states have refused to expand their Medicaid eligibility under 404Care. After all, the feds have promised to pay those costs; how can they turn down free money?!??!?

And NEVER, I repeat never, does Beth explain where the gubmint gets all this largesse to dispense. That's why it is insane to not take this free money. See, the gubmint has this huge plantation of money trees, probably tended to by undocumented immigrants, that produces moar money than they know what to do with. Yet those Evil Repukes want to cut SNAP by 5% over 10 years, on a program that has grown 50% in 5 years. Moar Oh the Humanity! stuff follows.

Try as I might over the last 30-40 years to kill off brain cells, I cannot achieve the IQ reduction necessary to write for The Atlantic. Thus, I post lengthy late night posts on the HQ in the hopes that just one or two sane people get a few seconds of enlightenment or at least a good sneer of derision at my efforts.

The human race would continue fine without either one.

My first actual okra sighting was in 78. Heard the word used in a sentence before. Just never actually laid my eyes on the stuff. Tour of mess cooking in the Wardroom Galley of a Frigate. During my first almost semi-hurricane at sea, ship rocking from here to hell and back, in a hot. tiny galley....there sits a pot of bubbling Navy grade Okra.

Never touched it since.
