Quote of the Day I

"In 2012 the CEO of Walmart made $20.7 million. Walmart has about 2 million employees (as far as I can tell, this is only counting the employees in the American stores). So, if you divided the CEO's entire pay among the employees they'd each get $10.35 more per year- that's not quite 20 cents per week; a half a cent per hour for full time employees. Woohoo.

Now, look at a paystub and see how much the various governments' steal from every paycheck, and then tell me who the real parasite is."

Quote of the Day II

Until August 1914 a sensible, law-abiding Englishman could pass through life and hardly notice the existence of the state, beyond the post office and the policeman. He could live where he liked and as he liked. He had no official number or identity card. He could travel abroad or leave his country for ever without a passport or any sort of official permission . . .The Englishman paid taxes on a modest scale: nearly £200 million in 1913-14, or rather less than 8 per cent of the national income.

Quote of the Day III

And at PJ Media, Bryan Preston has finally found the best description ever of MSNBC, something he reveals in the very first sentence of a post you'll want to read:  "Religious cable network MSNBC rallied the faithful with a pair of heartworming [sic -- done on purpose] messages."

Are Americans All Latent Nazi-like Sadists?

Well that's what Stanley Milgram's obedience experiments in the early 60s seemed to imply. But when you look at the details of exactly what was done during the experiments they actually suggest the opposite.

For one thing a majority of the subjects (60%) in most of his scenarios refused to continue with potentially lethal shocks even when heavily coerced by the experimenter. And of those who did administer the shocks many were convinced it was all a sham (and they were in fact correct about this).

It's surprising how often Milgram's 24 different variations are wrongly conflated into this single statistic. The 65% result was made famous because it was the first variation that Milgram reported in his first journal article, yet few noted that it was an experiment that involved just 40 subjects.

By examining records of the experiment held at Yale, I found that in over half of the 24 variations, 60% of people disobeyed the instructions of the authority and refused to continue.

...Milgram went to great lengths with the stagecraft of his experiment, and was dismissive of subjects' claims that they had seen through the hoax. Yet unpublished papers at Yale show that suspicion was alive and well among many of Milgram's subjects (which is not surprising, given that Candid Camera was the most popular TV show in the United States at that time).

Subjects wrote to Milgram or called him afterwards to describe what had made them suspicious. Some commented on how the learner's cries seemed to be coming from a speaker in the corner of the room, suggesting it was a tape recording. Others noticed the check given to the learner looked dog-eared and worn, an indication that it had been handed over many times before. The experimenter's lack of concern for the learner and failure to respond to the learner's complaints suggested there was nothing to worry about. Some subjects described how they had surreptitiously pressed switches of lower voltage but still the learner's cries intensified.

So we're not all secretly Nazis at heart and in fact it takes a lot of effort to get most people to act like one even under highly controlled conditions.

North Korea's Youth Revolution

With the execution of Kim Jong Un's uncle the young people seem to be in charge - and that's not a good thing. Just ask those lucky enough to survive China's Cultural Revolution.

The 67-year-old Jang was for decades a trusted eminence grise, the interlocutor in an otherwise eccentric family. His wife was the youngest daughter of the current leader's grandfather and North Korea's founder, Kim Il Sung. She was also the sister of the young leader's father, Kim Jong Il.

Jang was appointed the de facto regent before Kim Jong Il died in December 2011, a job that included reining in youthful impulses - something the younger Kim clearly resented.

In a 2,700-word screed released Friday, Jang was accused of doing "serious harm to the youth movement in our country, being part of the group of renegades and traitors in the field of youth work bribed by enemies."

Just two years in power, Kim Jong Un has made a cult of youth the theme of his rule, investing the country's scarce resources in water slides, roller coasters and ski slopes.

Megan McArdle: Why I Try Not to Write Bad reviews

I am, as my family and friends will testify, neither nice nor sweet. And I have certainly delivered my share of scathing takedowns and over-the-top denunciations. But I'm not particularly proud of it, and as I backpack into middle age, I've been trying to cut down on the snark, along with late nights, red wine and almost everything else I enjoyed in my 30s.

...But that's not actually the main reason I avoid it. The main reason I avoid the joys of snarky takedowns is that it's not very good for you. Snark is immense, immense fun; the only thing more enjoyable than chortling to yourself over a particularly well-turned insult is having your friends and acquaintances e-mail to tell you how awesome it was. But if you're basically pretty good at snotty putdowns - and most bloggers have at least an apprentice-level facility with this art - it's almost too much fun. It's too easy. It's the writing equivalent of skiing the bunny slope.

I have written some epic snark, and I have written a book, and let me just tell you, there is no comparison. Books are hard. Reported features are hard. Sarcasm and outrage are easy, which is why they tend to peak in adolescence, unlike, say, mastery of nuclear physics.

Producing content is hard while snark is easy.

Just How British Are You?

The Horrible Bad Bad Fisher-Price Bouncy Seat with iPad Holder

Eh - it's actually more interactive than a lot of the stuff people  leave babies with. And sometimes mommy does need a break to use the bathroom and make some phone calls.

The seat is angering parents and child advocates who say the introduction of screen technology so early is harmful to the health and development of babies and claim Fisher-Price's seat hits a new low.

The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood today began a letter writing campaign against the $75 product, calling it 'oppressive and destructive to young children,' while also naming it the worst toy of the year.

23 Thinking about amnesty, I have a perfect illustration of why it sucks and any one who supports it is a shit sucking scumbag. I have a really good friend who has a landscaping business, he really is an artist when it comes to design and he does a great job for his customers, many who he has had for 15 or more years. He probably works harder than anyone I have known, which really is saying something. He pays all his taxes and only takes legit stuff as deductions (has a real accountant do his taxes). In the winter of course work slows so he usually picks up things such as paint jobs from regular landscape customers. About a week ago, one of his customers called him and said "I need my interior painted, I got a bid from a Mexican crew, if you can match it the job is yours." My friend has a wife and child and a house. Pays ALL taxes including employee ss and Medicare. Now how the fuck is he supposed to compete with $6hr/man crew? If it were the free market at work that would be one thing, but it's not. On one hand you have someone following government rules, that if broken would wind up in jail. On the other, there is a group of people that the same government is saying, we will excuse you for not paying your taxes for years and years and years. F that.

47 That Glock commercial conveys a whole bunch of very bad habits in regard to tactical self-defense with a firearm in the home.

I counted about six instances where I was saying out loud, "NO! DON'T DO THAT, DO THIS INSTEAD!"

And of course the _deus ex machina_ of the perp conveniently fainting at the sight of a gun, which is something that's nice if it happens, but doesn't actually happen all that often in real life. Professional crims typically have had guns pointed at them before, and while they might beat a retreat, they're not going to pass out from fear when it happens again.

Curious as to how others in the Horde took it.

Actually, if St0rmfr0nt had a multi-billion dollar media outlet it would sound exactly like MSNBC with only a few obvious differences. RE: Milgram 'experiment' Yeah, I figured as much. The Stamford prison experiment was probably as big a fraud as the Milgram one but it seems to get much bigger play in some sociology classes. I suspect not only biased subject selection, but it was probably corrupted by Hawthorne effect (ie the subjects were playing to the role that they thought the experimenters hoped to see. ) BlackAdder mit eine kleiner Hugh Laurie: heh.

When was the last time you saw anything but a scared idiot woman or a badass action star woman with a gun in her hand on tv? It showed her being familiar and comfortable enough to purchase the gun, to keep it (at least somewhat) at hand and to go get it when she felt she need it. It showed, or at least implied, that she was ready to use it to defend herself with it. All positives. Were there drawbacks? Of course, but I see those as style points. The basic message conveyed was a positive one. And you got to remember, this ad isn't aimed at people like us, it's aimed at the Low Gun Info type.

80 NDH, Did you watch the season enderÂ’s of M of S & Homeland? They were both good. IÂ’ll have to find something else to watch. I liked The Americans when that was on last year, either on FX or USA. My older brother told me it was funny and it is. He didnÂ’t care for M of S. *** Yes! And I was asking about you on the ONT last night. I wish they would stagger the seasons because now there's no Homeland, no Master of Sex, and no House of Lies. How did you feel about the Homeland finale? I think it was far and away their best episode ever. Really fantastic. I started watching another Showtime series a couple of nights ago and watched the first season in one sitting. Have you watched Episodes yet? I've never seen The Americans. Maybe I'll check that out.

94 Until August 1914 a sensible, law-abiding Englishman could pass through life and hardly notice the existence of the state, beyond the post office and the policeman.

This is the kind of government I would like to live with. Not the kind that takes more than half my earnings and gives them to someone else.

That makes me a racist, a bigot and someone unwilling to pay their fair share.

My ideas: - South Park - The Simpsons (before politics ruined it) - Family Guy/American Dad/The Cleveland Show (all the same show really) - Married With Children - Night Court - Soap - Three's Company (although horribly dated today) *** South Park is definitely at the top of the raunchy/funny list. Not raunchy, but very funny and very underappreciated: The Bernie Mac show. I loved that show.

150 Hey, 'Rons n' 'Ettes -- what's the secret to keeping your pizza crust from getting all soggy when you load it with toppings (sauce, cheese, pepperoni, onions, green peppers, ripe olives and mushrooms in fairly generous quantities)?
...............
Almost impossible.. suggesting upthread about cooking stuff first is good.

I move my pizzas around in the oven.  I put a rack on the lowest rails I can, and move pizzas down there to brown and get crispy on the bottom.

The problem is getting them done on top with all that stuff on there.

In the end, you have to realize you can't have both.  Cut back on toppings and sauce.

174 Episodes is funny because it's Matt LeBlanc playing himself, but he's basically Joey. A lovable assholish Joey.

While I'm sure the millions of dollars he made help quite a lot, LeBlanc is probably the Friends cast member I would envy the least. Thanks to his Joey character on the show, everybody thinks he's a dummy... even though it's obvious he's not.

Call it "Tony Danza Syndrome."

177  @ 150 [Chi-Town Jerry] -- Actually, my first attempt came out better than I'd expected. The crust wasn't soggy at all, but I did over-bake it a bit, so it was a tad on the crunchy side. I pre-heated to 500, stuck the pizza no the bottom rack and immediately lowered the temp to 400. I probably should have dropped it to 375 instead.

Next time, I'm considering using a 50/50 mixture of red sauce and ricotta. What can it hurt?

No, don't. Another one of the fine print surprises in Obamacare: every American's passport has been permanently revoked.

Here's a few more Obamacare fine print surprises I bet no one here knows about:

- All Americans have been hereby named fans of Blossom and Dawson's Creek.
- All pizzas MUST be topped with arugula starting on 1/1/2015.
- There is no more 'Male' gender identity, we're all instead now variations on Female on a scale from 1 to 10.

198 29 Hey, 'Rons n' 'Ettes -- what's the secret to keeping your pizza crust from getting all soggy when you load it with toppings (sauce, cheese, pepperoni, onions, green peppers, ripe olives and mushrooms in fairly generous quantities)? Posted by: DamnDirtyRINO at December 17, 2013 10:54 PM (m0h0I) Ditto on sautéing the veggies to get excess water out then I put them on some paper towels to dry out even more. I also add about a half inch of water in the pan and boil my pepperoni for a minute to get out the extra grease without drying it out. Then blotting on paper towels. They are still plenty fatty but don't leave that layer of grease on the top of your pizza that runs off and adds to the soggy factor. I like using a pizza stone on the grill, gets hotter than my oven and doesn't smoke up the house if anything spills onto the stone.

260  @ 198 [lindafell] -- Thanks to you, too. I don't have a stone. I just use one of those cast iron pizza pans with holes in it and a gas oven. Seems to work pretty well, but this is the first time I've tried doing a pizza from scratch (if you consider using pizza dough premix "scratch"). I normally just buy a frozen cheese pizza and add a bunch of crap to it. But, anything more than a couple of toppings and it usually comes out soggy and lukewarm in the center.

266 but if you try to ignore that Into Darkness is supposed to be a Wrath of Khan remake, then it's actually not bad Which would be easier if they weren't so blatant about it being the WoK remake. They start using Khan's name almost from the word go. They talk about the "Eugenics Wars." Almost every scene references either the TOS episode or Wrath of Khan in some way. Oh, but they reversed the "died in the reactor core" scene. So it should be all different and stuff.

Don't bother. As someone who liked the Reboot as "good fun with lots of explosions" I say Wrath of Khan was infinitely better than "NOT Wrath of Khan- 'cause we said so, dammit!" could ever hope to be.

Word. The whole movie is a 9/11 origin allegory, where the US/Federation is the evil bad guy who created Khan/Taliban/AQ and got what was coming to them. To make matters worse, it's a shitty movie, confusing, asinine and pointless.

351 323 Saying "It’s like communism—good in theory, in execution it fails" still bothers me. No, it's not good in theory. Strikes me as very LIV.

Why doesn't anyone ever say "It's like Adam Smith, good in theory!" Oh wait, because that would be vaguely pro-free market. Can't have that, no?

Posted by: Iasonas at December 18, 2013 12:09 AM (FHNkr)

Communism is good in theory if you make one mistaken assumption about people: that if we were to somehow find ourselves in a utopia, we would become utopian in our behavior.

Of course, people being human beings and all, we will behave with all the virtues *and* flaws of the human race, dooming any theoretical utopia to utter failure.

362 If you were right, Pizzas would be made on Grills. They aren't. They are baked in ovens. On brick. Preferably at 600 degrees or higher. I am right, because I'm talking about what is possible in the average home. Home ovens generally don't go to the temps you need to cook pizza properly. Grills do. Now, if you're this guy ( http://backyardbrickoven.com/index.html ), then I retract my comment. The ovens we used in the pizza shop where I worked years ago got way hotter than your average Kenmore.

There was something about Nancy Travis in So, I Married an Axe Murderer that hooked me. As for Lauren Graham, she's always been one of those actresses who seem to turn up on every TV show in a supporting role, but always seemed just a little too hot to be relegated small parts.

That's part of the reason to go with the fetish toy catalogs. (1) Go to library, (2) Get on computer (you clearly don't want to use your own), (3) Google some terms -- "ball gag" might get you started -- and find the results that are NOT youtube, images, or clearly porn (something with "widest selection at great prices" in the little blurb has a good chance of being the right type of thing), (4) see if website offers free catalogs, (5) input asshole's info.

*Rolls eyes* My grandfather was on that damned treadmill for decades. People have idiosyncatic reactions to medications -- for instance, I am relatively insensitive to aspirin and cocaine derivatives -- I never understood why people talked about taking a pill for pain relief until ibuprofen, and have pretty much given up on dental anesthesia completely [and, BTW, I probably inherited it from gramps]. So he was continually on this thing about his blood pressure medication giving him glaucoma and his glaucoma medication screwing up his cholesterol and his cholesterol medications dorking his sugar and his diabetes control messing with his blood pressure, and every recommended course of action involved taking stuff with yet another side effect.

Agoura is pretty different from my youthful memories. I'm amazed at some of the upscale hotels now in the area, suggesting there is a significant business market. I suspect if I still lived in Thousand Oaks I'd have a much better shot at finding a full time job that didn't require a crushing commute. But that isn't really an option unless I became so wealthy I'd be unlikely to look for that kind of job anymore.

I forget where, but there was some speculation that the difference between the branch that became modern humans and the Neanderthals was that modern human females have covert estrus and Neanderthals may have had (like most modern primates) overt estrus. Anyone who has spent time on a farm can mull over the implications of that.

Interestingly, ligers are the largest felines, because there are size-reducing genes in lionesses that are absent in female tigers. They're actually larger than Siberian (Amur) tigers, which are the largest feline species. Tigons, by contrast, generally are about the same size as their parents.

It made for an interesting history sampler.

One centerfold from the late 60s was an active Ren Faire participant and still was when I showed my brother the issue because he immediately recognized her, even though he'd met her as over decade older, heavier, and with kids.

The part I look for after determining it wasn't me or anyone I know, by virtue of the tickets being sold hundreds of miles away, is what kind of place sold the tickets. They get a piece of the action, 5% IIRC, so a big winner can mean a lot for the seller, too. In this case, it was a 'Jennifer's Gift Shop' in San Jose. So I'm thinking Jennifer must be pretty buzzed right now.

Around here, I suspect the big supermarkets compose a major portion of the lottery sales. I wonder how that works out. Does it carry any kind of reward for the employees of Ralphs #448 if a jackpot winner was sold at their location, or does the Kroger company take it all?

Wouldn't the risks be the same except for a couple of days each month? Although, to be sure, it would not surprise me if the specific mutation that flipped the absorb/flow switch were only successful in particularly robust populations or when specific anti-infection measures were simultaneously triggered.

653 I usually just use the CA lottery site for info, and it tends to act like the other states don't exist, even for multi-state games. It does explain why they're listing it as a $318 million jackpot. I'd assumed in passing they were referring to the lump sum but it makes more sense that it is half of the $636 million.

Just ten million short of the record. Amazing how that removes some excitement from the epic amount of cash.

Speaking of which, one of the more fascinating things I encountered in the biomedical area is where they found antibiotics. They started out thinking, "we know where horrible germs are found -- places where you wouldn't want to touch anything if you had a scratch or have anything touch you if you had a popped pimple, and would want to wash everything immediately afterwards......but what keeps all this nastiness from getting started in these horrible places and just marching along until they're downtown?

So, they started sending grad students by the truckload to places like graveyards and sewers. There's a great example at http://tinyurl.com/m456nvp where Giuseppe Brotzu discovered cephalosporins in a sewage outfall off the coast of Sardinia. The grad students who actually collected samples are not named, of course.

676 OK, fine.....we've gone another 20 minutes. So I get to show my pedantic side while I get sleepy enough to hit the sack.

The current internet runs on IP4, "Internet Protocol 4". This means that internet addresses resolve into 4-byte chunks. Since a byte can have a value from 0-255, this means that all possible internet addresses can be expressed as four numbers. For instance, if you open a command window and type "ping ace.mu.nu", you'll get a bunch of info that includes the four bytes for this website -- "174.37.121.35".

So, how does your browser know to contact 174.37.121.35 when you type "ace.mu.nu" into its search bar? Well, it asks someone it trusts, the Domain Name Service. Since there are only 256x256x256x256 possible numeric combinations, it's reasonable to synchronize names across just a few DNS servers -- that's only 4,294,967,296 possible mappings.

Mind you, there is nothing at all that keeps you from communicating with 1.2.3.4, even if it's not valid to a DNS. It's like having house addresses that aren't listed in the phone book -- the postal service still knows where they are and will deliver mail.

The next internet protocol is IP6, which will multiply the available addresses by 65,536 -- from over four billion to over a hundred trillion....and things will get increasingly interesting.

Since Domain Name Servers exist to provide a link between human-readable nicknames and IP addresses, the expansion will widen an opportunity for private linkages, outside the control of established institutions and governments.

Posted by: cthulhu at December 18, 2013 01:59 AM (T1005)

678 It was a lot of work just trying to understand it, cthulhu... I felt like i was in a gaming thread. Foreign languages and shit.

679 A good ONT. Fricking pain meds kick my ass so I've been checking out ONT in the morning.

680 Ok here, Chi. Dunno if anyone's around.

681 Ok here, Chi. Dunno if anyone's around. Well, I am, but I just lurk - especially when the thread covers an area that's a complete mystery to me.

682 Only thing I miss about daylight savings time is all the morons who live by the clock instead of the sun were up an hour earlier. We'd have morning post by now. G'morning day zombies.

684 Quit lurking and jump in, Panhandler. Fair warning : it'll be a long time before most of these guys and gals pay attention to you past "hello," but if you've been around any amount of time, you know they're all good people. Very smart, funny and irreverent bunch here. And um, hello.

685 Late to the party but on that Fisher-Price Bouncy---Get real, whiners! You are the first people to plop your kids in front of Baby Einstein Videos or some such nonsense while YOU play on your phones. You are the first ones to hand that fucking cell phone to them in the cart at the store, as long as they can sit up alone. Spare me the self-righteous bullshit. I didn't have any of that shit when my kids were coming up, but I can tell you, you will still never catch me at a park when I have grandkids "eating"my phone, either cause YOU do that, too, don't you? Save it.

689 Good news of the day - finally had someone call me back and say come work for me. Bad news - he doesn't want me to run the job, he wants me to crawl under the old house and run new plumbing. FML. Oh well, at least I'll be working. It's been a while.

Posted by: shredded chi at December 18, 2013 02:48 AM (xk1jI)

690 Oh well, at least I'll be working. It's been a while. Be like the camel Chi. First get your nose in the tent.

691 You know what, web? I read that, but didn't get the context until you just noted the magic #... And good morning.

Posted by: shredded chi at December 18, 2013 02:52 AM (xk1jI)

692 "...it'll be a long time before most of these guys and gals pay attention to you past 'hello'..." -s chi Is that it? I thought I was just being filtered out. hahaha It's kinda like the country residence thing. The spread south of us is the Lounsbury place, even though Mrs L left about three decades and three owners ago. Someday somebody might stay long enough to become real to the neighbors....

693 Morning, Chi. Howdy Mr. Jarhead. Et al. (Al? Al who?) The Waiting for Vic Club meets every morning for coffee and doughnuts. Who wants glazed with sprinkles?

Posted by: BBQ Unicornwings, Santa's mindful webworker at December 18, 2013 02:58 AM (i5xnd)

694 690 -Panhandler I know, I know. just hoping it's a really big tent. I told him that I'd work cheap for a few days so he knows I'm not a crackhead or an idiot. Been a long time since I had to put on a crawl suit... Hopefully, he's just trying to test me. See if I really know how to build a house, or if I'm full of shit.

Posted by: shredded chi at December 18, 2013 03:00 AM (xk1jI)

695 didn't get the context until you just noted the magic #... -shredded chi Folks just don't make that big a deal about it like in the old days of a few months ago. We're losing our cultural touchstones and traditions!...

Posted by: BBQ Unicornwings, Santa's mindful webworker at December 18, 2013 03:01 AM (i5xnd)

696 Who wants glazed with sprinkles? Around here, that question scares the bejeebus out of me. I think I'll just toast a bagel and mix a bloody mary...

Posted by: shredded chi at December 18, 2013 03:03 AM (xk1jI)

697 See if I really know how to build a house, or if I'm full of shit. Probably a good idea if you don't mention ATC and the Moron Pirate Island then huh.

Posted by: Panhandler at December 18, 2013 03:03 AM (LqVNJ)

698 I would build AtC a mud hut for coconuts. And have it running like Gilligan's Island in no time. Is MaryAnn going to be there?

Posted by: shredded chi at December 18, 2013 03:07 AM (xk1jI)

699 698 Somewhat doubtful, the Mega got won last night - Georgia and California. Wait! Peaches! She wins, she clears 20 acres of slums and builds her own private shooting range.

Posted by: Panhandler at December 18, 2013 03:10 AM (LqVNJ)

700 Crap on a lottery ticket! News just said 2 people are holding winning tickets for the jackpot. I didn't buy a ticket. Of course, I haven't in years, so I shouldn't complain about it.

Posted by: shredded chi at December 18, 2013 03:10 AM (xk1jI)

701 I have watched enough Doctor Who! You got: As British as Stephen Fry walking a corgi outside Buckingham Palace - YouÂ’re awkward. YouÂ’re easily embarrassed. YouÂ’re sickeningly polite. YouÂ’re as British as they come!

Posted by: MathMom at December 18, 2013 03:15 AM (p68km)

702 The second prize for Mega isn't too bad. In some states it's a million in others it's based on the numbers sold so it is about 2.7 million.

Same here...
