Overnight Open Thread (12-19-2013)
— Maetenloch

So all but one of my computers are currently down while I'm restoring them which means I've got nothing really. So you'll get whatever scraps I happened to have lying around and you'll like them.

Who Disapproves of ObamaCare?

Well mostly the very people it was supposed to help - the health care uninsured.

Fifty-three percent of the uninsured disapprove of the law, the poll found, compared with 51 percent of those who have health coverage. A third of the uninsured say the law will help them personally, but about the same number think it will hurt them, with cost a leading concern.

Moreover the uninsured really don't like the idea of mandated coverage and many are foregoing the mandated insurance either because they can't afford the new plans, just don't think they need any, or are philosophically opposed to being forced to buy insurance just for living in the US.

Seventy-seven percent of the uninsured said they disapproved of the mandate, compared with 65 percent of those who already have health insurance.

...Of the uninsured who said they were not likely to sign up by the deadline, fully half said it was because of the high cost. Twenty-nine percent said they planned to go without coverage because they object to the government's requiring it, and 11 percent said they did not need health insurance

Just one more layer in the giant FAIL onion of Obamacare: Even the very people it was designed to help hate it.

The Love That Dare Not Speak Its Name

The love of vajayjay that is.

It seems like, to me, a vagina — as a man — would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying?

Meanwhile the Robertson family says no Phil, no show:

We want to thank all of you for your prayers and support. The family has spent much time in prayer since learning of A&E’s decision. We want you to know that first and foremost we are a family rooted in our faith in God and our belief that the Bible is His word. While some of Phil’s unfiltered comments to the reporter were coarse, his beliefs are grounded in the teachings of the Bible. Phil is a Godly man who follows what the Bible says are the greatest commandments: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart” and “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Phil would never incite or encourage hate.We are disappointed that Phil has been placed on hiatus for expressing his faith, which is his constitutionally protected right. We have had a successful working relationship with A&E but, as a family, we cannot imagine the show going forward without our patriarch at the helm. We are in discussions with A&E to see what that means for the future of Duck Dynasty. Again, thank you for your continued support of our family.

Police Pulling Over Drivers For More Random DNA Tests

This time in Pennsylvania.

"Pennsylvania police this week were pulling people to the side of the road, quizzing them on their driving habits, and asking if they'd like to provide a cheek swap or a blood sample - the latest in a federally contracted operation that's touted as making roads safer. The same operation took place last month at a community in Texas. Then, drivers were randomly told to pull off the road into a parking lot, where white-coated researchers asked if they'd like to provide DNA samples for a project that determines what percentage of drivers are operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol at given times. With uniformed police in the background, the researchers also offered the motorists money - up to $50 or so - for the blood or saliva samples."

The Story of the Photo

On 21st December 1989, Jean Guichard traveled to the lighthouse in a helicopter when such a storm broke out. Guichard was a celebrated photographer of maritime heritage around France and decided to take photos of the lighthouse during the storm. Inside, the lighthouse keeper Théodore Malgorn was waiting to be rescued, and thought Guichard's helicopter was his rescue helicopter.

He hurried downstairs to open the door - a moment which coincided with a giant wave enveloping the lighthouse. Malgorn rushed back inside and managed to close the door, and Guichard took a series of seven photos that became instantly famous. They sold over one million copies in poster print and earned him the World Press Photo award.

Two years later, automation came to Breton lighthouses; La Jument's keeper was retired 1991.

7 Nevada’s own “Napoleon XIV½” Throws a Temper Tantrum Nevada’s own “Napoleon XIV½” Jon Ralston threw a temper tantrum on his blog about how Sen. Dean Heller’s office was sooo unprofessional. Why? Because Heller’s office had better things to do than to cater to (yet another) malignant narcissist, who is not above belittling the accent of an immigrant. He is the textbook description of someone with a Napoleon complex, abet in the case of Ralston it is more of a Napoleon XIV… and a half… complex. More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=4451

9 So, I was stuck in traffic today and a song came on from years ago. Singing along, my brain cross associated the song to something I did at the time it was a hit that I'm not proud of, and suddenly my conscience went into overdrive and decided that the drive home would be beat-up-on-the-brain time. I got into a thought loop where I kept remembering bad stuff I'd done 20 or more years ago. Nothing major or prosecutable, no rapes, murders or bank robberies, just the small beer of being an imperfect human. "Remember that girl who was sweet on you at 18? You totally used her for sex for about a week then dumped her, I bet you hurt her! Hey, then there was that party in Catonsville where you drove home too shitfaced drunk to see! You lied to XXX! You totally stole that thing dude! You were intentionally mean to XXX for no reason whatsoever!", and so on and so on. Now, as I said, all of this was over 20 years ago, and I probably am the man I am today because of the idiot I was then, but some of that stuff was so....foreign to who I am now that I wound up feeling guilty decades later! I am willing to bet the same thing happens to everybody (everybody with a sense of honor and virtue anyway). I wouldn't do any of those things today. I couldn't do them today, just...could not do them. But I did do them back then. Oy. I realize that everybody is an asshole sometimes, and while I can't change the past I can make sure not to be an asshole today or tomorrow. That's hard enough at times, it doesn't seem fair to have to remember stupid shit I did decades ago.

43 I'm among the fortunate, I'm pretty unlikely to ever have to deal with the Obamacare Exchange.  My company is pretty committed to providing insurance for employees and is large enough to have significant pull.

However, I decided that if I were ever to lose it, I will pay a fine before using that web site.  I will never enter my personal information into that thing.

Related, I read a really great article the other day about doctors that are setting up fee for service practices that don't accept insurance at all.  All procedures are listed up front on a menu, and generally run about 20% of the going rate.

If Obamacare never gets repealed, then I'm willing to bet that becomes the new market, with insurance companies out of the loop.  Which wouldn't be a terrible outcome.  My doctor already moved to a concierge practice, which I'm paying out of pocket for.

A third of the uninsured say the law will help them personally, but about the same number think it will hurt them, with cost a leading concern." Because the insured don't know how crappy the offered plans are. You have to sign up for an account and go through several steps, on a site that doesn't work a good share of the time, before you can find out what the plans really are. If you get through all that you find out that the cheap plans (bronze) have such high deductibles and co pays, that you may as well be uninsured. You will pay a couple hundred dollars a month in premiums, then when you get hurt and go to the hospital emergency room, you will pay the entire $4000 yourself to meet the deductible. But you get a free mammogram, which must make the dudes feel great. If you get a higher level plan, silver, you pay several hundred per month premiums, but you still have higher deductible and copays than you had with your old insurance. People who have insurance through their employers like I used to know none of this.

Like you, it isn't malicious things, not truly evil things, but sins of omission, indifference, self-interest, a failure to consider others, failure to keep the needs of others uppermost in my mind.. The terrible part is, the older I get, the more those things come to mind. There is no way to atone for them.

A couple of times in the last day A Christmas Carol has been quoted. Last night someone here quoted Marley with what for me is one of the most memorable bit from the story:

Related, I read a really great article the other day about doctors that are setting up fee for service practices that don't accept insurance at all. All procedures are listed up front on a menu, and generally run about 20% of the going rate.

If Obamacare never gets repealed, then I'm willing to bet that becomes the new market, with insurance companies out of the loop. Which wouldn't be a terrible outcome. My doctor already moved to a concierge practice, which I'm paying out of pocket for.

Posted by: Dave in Fla at December 19, 2013 10:59 PM (LxcRK)

It has long been my opinion that medical "insurance" is the primary cause of excessive charges for medical procedures.  It disconnects the normal feedback loop between needs and costs and encourages overcharging  on the part of the medical suppliers, and unconcern regarding costs from the Medical care recipients.

Medical costs would be much more reasonable if the market wasn't so heavily distorted by these perverse incentives.

It happens to everyone.  A year ago I had a falling out with my college friends after I drank too much one night and lost my temper.  Hardly a day goes by that I don't think about what happened and regret it.  But it happened, I can't undo it, so instead I try and make myself a better person out of the experience.

172 The Duck Dynasty statement

"We want to thank all of you for your prayers and support. The family has spent much time in prayer since learning of A&E's decision. We want you to know that first and foremost we are a family rooted in our faith in God and our belief that the Bible is His word. While some of Phil’s unfiltered comments to the reporter were coarse, his beliefs are grounded in the teachings of the Bible. Phil is a Godly man who follows what the Bible says are the greatest commandments: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart” and “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Phil would never incite or encourage hate. We are disappointed that Phil has been placed on hiatus for expressing his faith, which is his constitutionally protected right. We have had a successful working relationship with A&E but, as a family, we cannot imagine the show going forward without our patriarch at the helm. We are in discussions with A&E to see what that means for the future of Duck Dynasty. Again, thank you for your continued support of our family."

174 NEVER understood the acclaim for Charlie Brown cartoon. ( watched it grow from a tiny strip at the edge of other columns into the big strip so I experienced the whole dreary lineage of the sad sack that was Charlie Brown)

Schulz was a jerk in real life and that was reflected most of the time in his strip.

Never found them amusing. They were to me about equal to Dondi or one of the soap strips.

The Specials were always a bore also.

The only slightly amusing character is Snoopy and that's because Schulz didn't know enough to create a downbeat, negative caricature of a dog because dogs are generally pretty upbeat.

Him and Dr. Seuss can blow me.

213 I count as two Presidents because I can thrash any man who says I don't. I will pummel anyone who dares to call me a single President until his bones are so much gravel and his internal organs are an undifferentiated mass of pulp. My fury will not be sated until my victim is reduced to a bag of skin filled with a slurry of blood, phlegm, and pureed entrails. That emaciated crank Andrew Jackson could never do as much damage as I can. That ridiculous poseur Theodore Roosevelt will never match me in sheer violence. I am so terrifying I cannot be confined to a single Presidency. I am two Presidents because I am twice as powerful, in the physical sense, as any other pair of Presidents you care to name. My sheer animal vitality extends to the sphere of romance. I can sire a nearly infinite number of offspring. My seed is inexhaustible, infinitely potent, and will quicken a generation of near-supermen. Women are drawn to my manly power, and after coitus with me are so overwhelmed that many have gone insane. Others, unable to consider any man after me, have become nuns. I can eat two whole prize hogs at a sitting. I can sign my name on the side of a speeding freight train. I can smash mountains with my fists. When I use the privy, my flatulence breaks windows as far away as Philadelphia. The hairs of my magnificent mustache can scratch diamonds. I drink a gallon of flaming whiskey with every meal. Nor am I lacking in intellectual attainments. I have written every book in the Library of Congress, using a variety of pseudonyms because of my tremendous modesty. I have lectured in Constitutional Law at the nation's finest universities, and am the superior of all my staff at their tasks. I have ten thousand patents to my name, and Mr. Nobel of Sweden is inventing a special prize to give me, in recognition of my vast accomplishments. My virtue is such that roses grow spontaneously at every spot on which I urinate. Sick and malformed persons are spontaneously cured by my spittle. I once clouted an imbecile on the back of the head with my open palm, and the blow made him the most intelligent man in the State of Indiana. The Pope and the Grand Mufti routinely send me telegrams, requesting my opinion on matters of theology and ethics, for they consider my words to be the equivalent of Divine Writ. Gentlemen, I count as two Presidents because of my titanic superiority in all aspects of existence. If you doubt anything I have said here, beware my wrath.

241 "Rape Culture" Around the World Did you know that in Bosnia, UN soldiers frequented brothels where the sex workers were 15-year-old slaves kept chained to in rooms with buckets for toilets and mattresses soaked in bodily fluids and filth? Every single UN nation on deployment there had soldiers who frequented the establishments. Except the US. Rape cultures exist — countries that tell people it's acceptable to rape. But according to feminists, it's jokes by Americans that really cause rapes, and real rape cultures should be ignored. (See: http://www.prisonplanet.com/teenagers_used_for_sex_by_un_in_bosnia.html and many other places.)

Course you can't be blamed for the GOP NEVER demanding recounts when ballots are "unexpectedly" discovered that strangely enough put the Democrat over the top.

The Att'y Gen race in Virginia was one. They just capitulated.

See this is why I'm not supporting the GOP anymore. They won't fight when they do get in they cave to the Dems when they do manage some fiscal control they cut the wrong stuff and do it stupidly.

Plus the just don't seem to want to win. And since they don't want to, I'm going to grant them their wish.

380 Viral pneumonia feels worse because you tend to spike a big fever. In a lot of older folks it can morph into bacterial because they feel lousy and lie in bed and bugs multiply in the inflamed bronchi. There are lots of things that present like simple community acquired pneumonia but are much more serious and complicated so it is important to rest, drink fluids, use something to keep the lungs open (tea, sudafed, inhaler, whatever) and follow up if it doesn't get better. 385 207 All this talk of Duck Dynasty and Phil Robertson and A&E, but precious little of the gorilla in the room, which would be GLAAD. This group has immense power, and I do mean immense. They are the reason gays a way over-represented in all television shows. They are the reason God isn't mentioned ever in a positive manner, and why gays are almost never the butt (pun intended) of jokes. They made on call to A+E, and the execs there decided to fuck with their most successful cash cow ever. One call. Posted by: Normal man spitting on his hands at December 19, 2013 11:43 PM (agLwc) Shows that are popular with audiences are not always popular with the advertising department. Many shows with good ratings have been cancelled while low rated ones stay on the air because the ad department and ad agencies like the shows, and Duck Dynasty is one of those shows that the ad department hates. When the show was a concept, the ad department thought it would be great because they envisioned the wine and cheese crowd in the Northeast laughing at the rednecks on the television, when they didn't tune in and middle America started watching and relating to the Robertsons, A&E freaked out. It didn't matter that the show is highly rated, the execs started to become embarrassed by the show. Same thing happened to WCW and WWF/WWE. The networks that were showing them decided they were above having pro wrestling on and decided to cancel or not renew the shows even though both were in the top 10 of cable shows. One organization moved to another channel, the other folded. The reason, the network execs were embarrassed by it. Make no mistake, A&E wants to be rid of the Robertsons, and it appears they will get their wish.

I once started reading a biography of Schulz and stopped. It focused on the poor relationships he had in his life. He apparently had a nag for a wife, and Lucy was supposed to have been based on her. I seem to recall that he also had difficulty relationships with his mother and other female relatives. As I recall he was an unhappy man.

He not only was dressing as a woman, he wore orange Buddhist nun robes. LMCO accommodated this to the point of letting him use the women's bathrooms. The accommodation was groundbreaking as it was not understood to be required by law at the time (I was doing HR-related work, so I was familiar with employment rules).

They are Liberal womb dwellers. They went into journalism to "make a difference" not to see or relate the facts. The Robertsons are not at all stupid and they don't need the money.

412 One other little note....GLAAD's very existence relies on persuading donors that it is GLAAD, and not basic human decency, that is responsible for the donors' well-being. This being the case, they occasionally are tempted to draw a distinction between themselves and basic human decency to prove which one is more effective.

Unfortunately for them, basic human decency is like gravity -- it's the weakest of the four fundamental forces of physics.....but usually manages to be the most relevant.

451 Bishop Timothy Clarke, head of the First Church of God, a large African-American church with a television ministry in Columbus, Ohio, was perhaps most typical. He felt compelled to address the president's comments at a Wednesday evening service and again Sunday morning. He was responding to an outpouring of calls, emails and text messages from members of his congregation after the president's remarks. What did he hear from churchgoers? "No church or group is monolithic. Some were powerfully agitated and disappointed. Others were curious -- why now? to what end? Others were hurt. And others, to be honest, told me it's not an issue and they don't have a problem with it." What did the bishop tell his congregation? He opposes gay marriage. It is not just a social issue, he said, but a religious one for those who follow the Bible. "The spiritual issue is ground in the word of God."

464 President Barack Obama's half brother is publishing an autobiography that details the domestic abuse that served as the theme for his earlier semiautobiographical novel, which featured an abusive parent patterned on their late father. Mark Obama Ndesandjo also recounts his sporadic but intense encounters with his brother over the years in "Cultures: My Odyssey of Self-Discovery." The self-published book, to be released in February, also tries to set the record straight on some points in the president's bestselling 1995 memoir, "Dreams From My Father." In that book, Obama seeks to learn more about their father, a mostly absent figure, after learning of his death in a car crash in 1982 at age 46. Ndesandjo's book comes four years after his novel, "Nairobi to Shenzhen: A Novel of Love in the East." As in his first book, Ndesandjo wanted to raise awareness of domestic abuse by using his family's story, although he said in an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday that the president's relatives have not universally welcomed his airing of private matters in public. Ndesandjo spoke ahead of a news conference to launch the book in Guangzhou on Thursday. When asked how he would describe his relationship with his brother, he said, "Right now it's cold and I think part of the reason is because of my writing. My writing has alienated some people in my family."

466 In his new book, Ndesandjo recalls alcohol-fueled beatings meted out by his father to his mother. He recounts one incident in which his father held a knife to his mother's throat because she took out a restraining order against him.

Posted by: thunderb at December 19, 2013 11:05 PM (zOTsN)

467 The book recounts Ndesandjo's first encounter with Obama, who was visiting Kenya in 1988. They did not hit it off. "Barack thought I was too white and I thought he was too black," Ndesandjo said. "He was an American searching for his African roots, I was a Kenyan, I'm an American but I was living in Kenya, searching for my white roots." The 500-page book includes an appendix listing a number of alleged factual errors in Obama's 1995 memoir, "Dreams from my Father," such as quotes incorrectly attributed to Ndesandjo's mother. "It's a correction. A lot of the stuff that Barack wrote is wrong in that book and I can understand that because to me for him the book was a tool for fashioning an identity and he was using composites," Ndesandjo said. "I wanted to bring it up because first of all I wanted the record to be straight. I wanted to tell my own story, not let people tell it for me," he said.

482 Good news: we are finally getting a big screen TV. Bad news: Our place is so insanely packed that to free the space to accommodate it, I need to redistibute several pieces of furniture. Worse news: My measurements were a little off, and the bookcase I thought I could shimmy into the bedroom is juuuust a smidge too tall to get in upright. The hallway is too narrow to get it in anyway but upright. Until I figure which direction to go now, it's on its side in the hallway. Hell, it basically IS the hallway. I may have just crossed the line from "American Pickers" to "Hoarders".

Time to get out the plane or the rasp or a chisel.

I have to do like one of those square puzzles with all the numbers where you have to move the numbers around and get them in order?

put this there and then I can move that over there and then I can move the other thing where that was and then I can get just enough space to put that other stuff HERE>.

So I know the feeling. I'm still unpacking from moving 6 years ago.

The other is to rearrange even more of the bookshelves to shuffle the two shortest ones into the bedroom. If I go the first, it will be interesting to see if I can out as easily as it got it...since I had MUCH less stuff occluding its passage when I first bought it. It's rapidly become a Magic Square problem, only wrought in oak.

All your previous bad decisions are done. You have a current situation, and the opportunity to make the best decisions possible for NOW. Start making them. You can mourn the previous bad decisions when you have a chance to sit and think a bit.....but you really need to make a good decision or two immediately.

Posted by: cthulhu at December 20, 2013 12:33 AM (T1005)

511 First there's shelters and particularly for women.

Being homeless, women usually get a better choice and more of them.

(ymmv depending on where you live but on average it's better)

Do you also have to provide for your dad?

If not then you're even more better off.

Move to a warmer clime (after checking what services might be available for you where you are.)

Move to where jobs are. (N.Dak, Alaska, Texa) stay away from large cities stay away from tourist places.

I've lived rough for a few months and though it ain't pretty or cozy, I got by and managed to parlay that into a job that lasted me almost 20 years.

Be smart be alert don't let it get you down and don't let people's opinion's make you feel inadequate.

Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That (Unexpurgated Edition) at December 20, 2013 12:35 AM (LSDdO)

512 Parking in your car could be hazardous and depending on the size of the police force (and the composition of the area) they may patrol and spot you and roust you. Without a driver's license you could get hassled a lot.

Try some shelters.

Go to churches. they can at least tell you where to go for help if they can't/won't help you then.

Deety, you need not exaggerate the issue beyond what it is -- it's plenty dire enough. And if you're looking for a literal answer, it is well known that people pull into Walmart parking lots for overnights all the time. You can also try at trucker places like Pilot -- they even have showers for rent. The YMCA (or YWCA) also has info on such things locally.

Listen to this guy. Being poor and homeless in the United States is better than being a prince in 90% of the world.....largely because it's likely to be temporary.

And I forgot to mention, talk to the Salvation Army guys. Did you know they're actually a church? And that -- very rare among charities -- their executives aren't wealthy? The fundamental principle of the SA is that they need to go where there are souls who need saving, so they have a lot of knowledge about things that other churches/institutions just gloss over.

And on that note, I'm convinced DT truly knows what she must do and just needs to make it happen.  And I hope against hope she will.

A vagrant is a homeless person who has no lawful means of support. "Living rough" is not "vagrancy".

There are a number of resources available to those who cannot afford to pay rent -- so many, in fact, that it's impossible to catalog the variety without extensive research. I've mentioned a few upthread -- and, oddly enough, however much of assholes the Pima PD might be, they can be a resource as well. Much of the problem is that people don't ask. So start asking.

And, yeah, I'm a doofus -- but I honestly wish for your situation to get better and I'm trying to help.

As a complete aside -- this comes from SCUBA training. We had an entire unit about complicated things that can happen to divers, and emphasizing simple mitigation policies requiring minimal explanation.

You can be helpful, and you help would be appreciated, but you have to break things down and be extremely clear, straightforward, positive, and complete at this stage. It's sort of like, "before you discuss decompression issues, make sure the diver isn't running out of air."

You are not automatically a "bag lady" if you don't have an apartment for a few weeks.....and you're not automatically going to get raped and robbed once you don't have one. It ain't like you're staying in the Ritz-Carlton, but you can make it through this with minimal disruption.

541 Deety, you're a long time favorite of mine here. I know you have had, in general, a tough go.

It sounds to me that you need to for the safety net. section 8 housing, food stamps, utility assistance, maybe even seeing if your dad qualifies for extra disability payments.

You and he have paid into the system before; it's now time to ask for some of it back.

I noticed the reco to car camp out at truck stops -- not bad at all. Pay by the day for internet access, video surveillance, showers available for around $3 If there's a McDs nearby you can access the web for free.

I'm sending positive vibes in your direction.

I could see that @531, especially, was well-meant, but didn't fill in the gaps enough to be smoothly understood -- and, sometimes, clarity must come first. The urge to help is always a good thing. Stay, help, heal. But understand that nuance has its place.

With DNA they can tell if you are descended from Native Americans, Irish or Scandis and then just save the time and effort of a breathalizer, blood or pee test and just haul you in.  It's kind of like the system used in "Minority Report".

552 Over at HA, one Headline guy postulates that AnE expected Duck Dynasty to be laughed at, kinda like Honey boo Boo. But it didn't work out that way, which horrified the PTB; but the money was rolling in. So now they have found a way to get rid of it.

DD will find a new home if they want to; they've made  nice pile already so they can be picky or even quit completely.

To me, I've never seen an episode nor do I plan to. Cable shows get dropped all the time. Nut I think these guys have options if they want them.

554 I have to say, the time I spent living rough was some of the best times I had. No clock, no boss, few worries, no stuff, no money.

It was very interesting and these days I look back on it with fondness and a wish I could go and do it again. Alas my health might be a problem and my age and agility.

I ain't a spring chicken anymore. Hell I'm not even a fall chicken.

At this point in time with further experience and a jaundiced eye, I have concluded that the majority of shows on TV for at least the last 30 years have been more "laughing at" than "laughing with".

Some very vile and disturbing attitudes can be seen in some surprising places on some of the shows.

558 If you look at the DD clan, and a breakdown of their cash flow in, A&E and the series are NOT the major source of income that one would expect.

Duck Commander, Buck Commander and the other side businesses are actually greater contributors to the total income.

And frankly, if Phil walked away from the NFL to shoot ducks, I think he is perfectly fine with a parting of the ways between he and A&E.

This, IMHO is a man who is truly more beholding to his faith then he is to either fame or fortune.

And a man who has nothing to lose has freedoms that others do not.

Talk to your landlord. If they won't listen or don't believe you or don't want to be bothered (cause they've been lied to too many times by you or others) then go to legal aid they can advise you on the process of eviction and what you can do to gain time.

Most areas have laws to prevent instant evictions (that doesn't mean they don't happen cause some landlords take a chance that you don't know the law and won't come back on them)

That's why my first stop would be the landlord with and explanation and the legal aid if the landlord won't work with you.

If you have income, there's no reason for you to be thrown on the streets. If you have any outstanding warrants that could be trouble and interfere with your resolution. Get that fixed asap.

Don't worry about problems that MAY happen. Worry about the problem before you and it maybe that your fears won't come to pass. Worrying about what may happen just wastes time and energy. Apply your mind to solving what you can and figuring out how to solve what you can't at this time. Worry about what you might have to do if this or that happens only serves to bring on stress and overload.

You need start looking at things as whether they advance you or not. If 3 residents died of cancer because the place where you lived was a horrendously contaminated shithole DOES NOT MATTER in the context of your eviction. And making the landlord suffer for any of that is way beyond your pay grade. Make things better for you, today. Make good decisions for you, today. Make responsible moves, today. See what you can do about keeping blots off your credit rating; earn a few bucks, don't have legal actions with your name on them -- try the painting/cleaning thing. Put your stuff in storage, try the various suggestions here about living rough. Things will get better -- make sure you're there when they do.
