'Health reform is starting to look like a bigger success than even its most ardent advocates expected'
This Is What Poverty Is Like...Or Not
So Linda Walther Tirado AKA KillerMartini wrote a piece on what it's like to be truly poor and how the limitations from poverty end up forcing her to make bad decisions and how she and her family have to live off of junk food in a hotel. It soon went viral on the internet.
Rest is a luxury for the rich. I get up at 6AM, go to school (I have a full courseload, but I only have to go to two in-person classes) then work, then I get the kids, then I pick up my husband, then I have half an hour to change and go to Job 2. I get home from that at around 1230AM, then I have the rest of my classes and work to tend to. I'm in bed by 3. This isn't every day, I have two days off a week from each of my obligations. I use that time to clean the house and soothe Mr. Martini and see the kids for longer than an hour and catch up on schoolwork. Those nights I'm in bed by midnight, but if I go to bed too early I won't be able to stay up the other nights because I'll fuck my pattern up, and I drive an hour home from Job 2 so I can't afford to be sleepy. I never get a day off from work unless I am fairly sick. It doesn't leave you much room to think about what you are doing, only to attend to the next thing and the next. Planning isn't in the mix.
...Convenience food is just that. And we are not allowed many conveniences. Especially since the Patriot Act passed, it's hard to get a bank account. But without one, you spend a lot of time figuring out where to cash a check and get money orders to pay bills. Most motels now have a no-credit-card-no-room policy. I wandered around SF for five hours in the rain once with nearly a thousand dollars on me and could not rent a room even if I gave them a $500 cash deposit and surrendered my cell phone to the desk to hold as surety.
Except that it appears to all be bullshit. She owns a house, is married to a Marine and has worked as a political campaign aide off and on since 2004, takes vacations to Vegas, and attended boarding schools in her youth and doesn't think much of your ilk.
So why is she still raising $100,000 to 'get out' of poverty?
On the morning of October 31, 1975 the body of 14 year old Martha Moxley was found in her backyard. Her skull had been bashed in by a golf club and her pants and underwear were pulled down. The night before she had been last seen with Thomas and Michael Skakel, nephews of Ethel Kennedy.
Gently interrogated by the police, murder suspect Michael Skakel threw the trump card: "You can't touch me! I'm a Kennedy." And indeed, the Greenwich, CT police didn't arrest him, even though the golf club that smashed in the 14-year-old's head came from Skakel's golf bag, and he admitted peeping in her windows - and abusing himself. He put himself on the scene, owned the weapon, and admitted unrequited lust for the victim. But "You can't touch me!"
From Wikipedia:
Over the years, both Thomas and Michael Skakel significantly changed their alibis for the night of Moxley's murder. Michael Skakel claimed that he had been window-peeping and masturbating in a tree beside the Moxley property from 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Two former Elan students testified they heard Michael Skakel confess to killing Moxley with a golf club. Gregory Coleman testified that Skakel was given special privileges, saying Skakel bragged, "I'm going to get away with murder. I'm a Kennedy."
And indeed he did which is why it took 27 years and the eventually fading of the Kennedy influence to finally bring Michael Skakel to trial for the murder of Martha Moxley. And now after serving 11 years in prison he's out on bail pending a new trial due to 'inadequate representation'.
So what do you do with a pair of Google glasses besides cheat at poker with them? Well you can also become a modern Cyrano de Bergerac and help improve a younger guy's game:
I'm married with three kids, and my wife has made it clear that Glass is not an aphrodisiac for her. So I figured I'd lend my device to a single twenty-six-year-old editor at Esquire. The plan: He'll wear it to a downtown New York bar, and I'll watch the live-stream video from home and tell him what to do. I'll be his Cyrano. I'll get a vicarious night on the town, all while eating my butternut-squash soup in the comfort of my home. I can't wait.
House to Soon Vote of the Undetectable Firearms Act Bill
Which despite its name would also ban plastic gun parts and even plastic magazines depending on how the DOJ interprets the vague wording.
Well Sony has become notorious for taking away features in its Playstation "upgrades" which you can't really opt out of. And now Tesla has stealthily removed a feature on its cars through a software update.
One of the great innovations of the 21st century are products that are cloud-connected and update and improve automatically. For software, gone are the days of having to buy a new version of physical media (disks or CD's.) For hardware it's the magical ability to have a product get better over time as new features are automatically added. The downside is when companies unilaterally remove features from their products without asking their customers permission and/or remove consumers' ability to use the previous versions. Products can just as easily be downgraded as upgraded.
It was a wake up call when Amazon did it with books, disappointing when Google did it with Google Maps, annoying when Apple did it to their office applications - but Tesla just did it on a $100,000 car.

Gargoyles are no fun to talk to. They never finish a sentence. They are adrift in a laser-drawn world, scanning retinas in all directions, doing background checks on everyone within a thousand yards, seeing everything in visual light, infrared, millimeter-wave radar, and ultrasound all at once. You think theyÂ’re talking to you, but theyÂ’re actually poring over the credit record of some stranger on the other side of the room, or identifying the make and model of airplanes flying overhead. For all he knows, Lagos is standing there measuring the length of HiroÂ’s cock through his trousers while they pretend to make conversation.

Has to be an unused scene from the first one. Could be though, that there's a version from an international theatrical release with that scene (and others maybe) in it. Never seen it myself either.

Also, what's this about the Patriot Act preventing people from getting checking accounts? I've had banks actively trying to get me to sign up for accounts.
It prevents you from opening an account without ID or proof of residence, IIRC. Obviously, that discriminates against the same sort of folks that will be disenfranchised by voting ID requirements - i.e., really, really stupid/lazy ones.
I couldn't produce the usual proof-of-residence documentation when I moved back into my parents house a couple years ago, since there were no bills with my name attached, but somehow the local bank and I were able to figure something out when I explained the situation.

Bacon Cheddar Puffs
1 cup milk
1/4 cup butter
1 cup all-purpose flour
4 large eggs
1 cup fine shredded sharp or mild cheddar cheese
8 slices bacon, cooked crisp, crumbled
1/2 tsp. onion salt or powder
1/4 teaspoon garlic salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
Combine milk and butter in medium saucepan. Heat over medium heat until butter is melted and mixture is simmering. Add flour all at once; continue to cook, stirring vigorously with a wooden spoon, until mixture forms a ball. Remove from heat. Beat in 1 egg until mixture is smooth. Repeat with remaining eggs, adding just 1 egg at a time, beating until thoroughly combined. Stir in remaining ingredients. Drop heaping teaspoons of mixture onto greased baking sheet. Bake in preheated 350°F oven 25 minutes or until puffed and golden brown. Serve warm or at room temperature.

The family have made something of a habit of that, to be sure.
I was recently put in mind of the interview which LBJ gave right in the last months of his life, in retired exile, his heart slowly locking up, when he described having taken over the Presidency and finding out things he had only suspected.
"We were running a damned Murder, Inc. in the Caribbean."
Consider that Johnson was a guy who had blatantly stolen elections for decades, tolerated Roman-decline levels of corruption among his cronies like Bobby Baker, and faked up a Silver Star for himself, and STILL he found the Kennedys horrifying. That just about says it all.
Posted by: torquewrench at December 02, 2013 06:52 PM (gqT4g)
IMHO about the only remaining difference between the Kennedys and the Fred Phelps clan any more is the comparative amounts of old money residing in their bank accounts.

It came out via a bit of digging (by the crew at The Conservative Treehouse if memory serves) that the Miami-Dade school district previously attended by Saint Trayvon of the Bloodied Hoodie runs its own independent police department.
Yes, you read that right. The school district have their own pet cops who they control and who report to them.
Why in the world would they want something like that? Think of the expense!
Well, for one thing, if they had to report crimes committed by students to the regular Miami cops, those students who committed serious enough crimes would be arrested. Possibly tried and sentenced. And taken out of school. Diminishing enrollment. And thus diminishing funding. Striking terror into educrat hearts.
So, the school board's pet cops existed in at least some degree to provide a veneer of authority for the school catching students committing obvious serious crimes (in St. Trayvon's case, burglary), and "diverting" them to nonjudicial punishments.
Of course, a second-order effect of this is that delinquent students learn fast that they can bend the rules sharply and still be let off with minor punishments. Encouraging them to push harder and farther the next time, into more serious crimes. Such as, well, assault and battery.
It will not be lost on the perceptive reader that the student body of those schools must be committing about a hundred thousand metric shit-tons of crime in order to justify having a special police force just for that school district.

With the lights out so you don't cast a shadow during the ambush. They're very light/shadow motion sensitive. In low light you can sneak right up on'em.
Another thing to try is a darkness trap. Offer them a dark faux escape route that has no exit - like a slightly bent piece of cardboard. When they duck under it, squash them with it.

This could be a good thing "fix" and once given the user option to have it lower at speed some will want to keep it high to save it from getting hit on the under body or go to the local dealership and have a dead weight added to under carnage to add the protection. All other car makes have dealt with design flaws by recalling 500,000+ cars. Most people don't care if they have to add dead weight because the flaw was a metal support bracket that was not strong enough and in turn it lower the fuel efficiency.

See I disagree and don't say the same thing about Brady. Because for so many years all you hear is how his receivers are crap and just wait until he has some real receivers. And they have traded and picked up free agent big name receivers for him in the past that have ended up being his major targets. Even the French from France think that the Quebecois French are nuts.
Once we are finally finished with the tedious charade of trying to hold together the disintegrating senile bankrupt USA as a cohesive entity, and America breaks up into smaller more suitable units, it is to be hoped that some of the sensible American heartland states and the sensible Canadian heartland states can form a customs union, if not an actual federal union.
Quebec? It needs to go its own loopy way. A solo nation.
One popular geographer has Quebec as a natural fit with Louisiana as "New Acadia". Not buying it. Those cultural strains diverged a while back.
Not least because there are a lot of black people in Louisiana, and my experience with the white Quebecois is that they adore idealized black people in theory, but have a really hard time with non-hypothetical real-world black people actually being anywhere near them.

Quebec and Louisiana were never close.
Quebec was colonised by France. The old Acadia, in what's now "Nova Scotia" (by the way, Cajuns - on behalf of the British nation - sorry 'bout all that) was settled by people who happened to be French and intermingled with the local Injuns.
Louisiana got non- Quebecois French and exiled Acadians. Also Haitians.

I wonder if carving Nunavut from the "North(east?west?)ern Territories" was a part of that too, along with the sudden boosting of "First Nations". I don't remember any of the latter until the late 1980s.
If you look at a map of Quebec, almost all of it north of the St Lawrence is, basically, what we'd call "Indian Territory". If Quebec gets independent, the First Nations up north don't have the slightest interest in speaking French and reciting "our forefathers the Gauls".

What is odd about the Quebecois is that they were at one time quite culturally conservative. Americans had hopes that they would team up with us to fight the Brits during the War of 1812, since Americans assumed they were hostile to the Crown, but, according to Paul Johnson, the Quebecois, who were very religious then, loathed the French Revolution and distrusted Napolean more than they did the Brits at that point.
Some writer said that one day in the '60's, all the churches emptied in Quebec - that's how abruptly they secularized. Wonder if that is when they became extreme moonbats as well.

Most places wouldn't let their creepy dipshits associate with anyone that stupid.

I've been saying it but he hasn't been hearing it. And because I'm nice to everyone (shut up Cochran), he may misconstrue that as flirting.
He's PTSD. Got his ass blown up a few times and still has shrapnel in him. One of the injuries was his head, and there is still quite a scar.
Posted by: Gingy @GingyNorth at December 02, 2013 11:56 PM (N/cFh)
Hmmm.....that does complicate things....PTSD is a real thing, that is unfortunately (and largely for political purposes) being tossed around as a "get out of responsibility free" card to anyone who ever received a military paystub (IIRC, Nidal Hasan tried to work that angle).
That said, if he's running around with "poor impulse control" to such a level, it may slide over into the "danger to himself and others" territory where a lovely sojourn in a loony bin may be appropriate. Problem is, I wouldn't trust modern psychiatry to make that determination (see Nidal Hasan reference above).
I can better understand your desire to keep things discreet and low-key. That said, I hope you swatted him hard enough to make an impression.

No! My heavens! What an absolutely shocking suggestion.
You should have stabbed him in the throat.
Short of that, you should have taken this to the instructor at once and formalized the complaint. Did the guy serve in uniform? Yep. Did he get chewed up from it? Yep. Might he really truly have PTSD? Yep. Does that give him a free pass on unacceptable conduct? Nope.
I have a friend with PTSD that he brought back from the sandbox. When it's acting up, he stays out of public. Because he knows it's his responsibility to behave responsibly, and if he might behave irresponsibly, that's something he can control via self-isolation till he feels he is back in control of himself. (This has to be watched. Some vets do this and then never come back out into public.)
It might also be a reasonable thing to find out who his girlfriend is, if not already known, and have someone else go talk to her. "Are you aware of what he has been doing?" That sort of a thing.

Or couldn't see it. There was an issue with placement. The previous owner of that Long-EZ had dopily chosen to locate the fuel switch valve up and behind the headrest of the seat. Crappy ergonomics.
If I had seen something like that in a plane I was buying, I would have immediately paid a good A&P to correct it and put a nice bright placard right by the goddamn thing in its new easy to reach location. Over here! Fuel switch!

In my experience, people out of that "community", if that's what to call it, vary widely in their attitudes towards approaching others.
Some can be remarkably blunt and crass in their come-ons, to near bodily assault levels, akin to what this guy did. Others dislike that sort of crude maneuvering and feel it discredits their lifestyle, preferring a more subtle and polite and ethical approach.
Perhaps his girlfriend is more of the latter school of thought. Or perhaps she's as tasteless as he is. Hard to tell without deputizing an intermediary to talk to her (I don't think it would be for the best for you to talk to her.)

Time for Kipling, methinks:
Man's timid heart is bursting with the things he must not say,

But when hunter meets with husbands, each confirms the other's tale—
The female of the species is more deadly than the male.

Power went off in Caracas and other cities around the country soon after 8 p.m. local time (0030 GMT), to the intense annoyance of residents and commuters.
"I feel so frustrated, angry and impotent," said sales adviser Aneudys Acosta, 29, trudging through the rain along a street in the capital after having to leave the disrupted underground transport system.
"I live far away and here I am stuck under the rain. Something's going wrong that they're not sorting out. The government needs a Plan B. This is just not normal."
Monday's outage appeared similar to a massive September 5 blackout that was one of the worst in the South American OPEC member's history.
Maduro, a 50-year-old former bus driver who narrowly won a presidential election this year after the death of his mentor and former leader Hugo Chavez, accused the opposition then of deliberately sabotaging the power grid to discredit him.

About 95% of it is done, but I've spent the day moving potted plants (some large) and putting-up a greenhouse -- and I am seriously thrashed. I've already had a run-in with that little Advil, but I've still got aching spots.

If I have not passed this information on to you, go over to http://www.swagoffroad.com and click on their Metal Fabrication link.
They have kits (that requires welding) for a finger brake press that can be used in a HF 20-ton press.
If you are putting aside tools, "for later", a finger-brake press is enormously useful. There is quite a lot you can do with sheet metal, and this one can bend reasonably thick pieces. They show 1/2" stuff, I'd trust the thing to maybe 1/4". more likely .190. Some of their other tools look interesting too.

@466 Sven
"I'm a Wolverine fan...."
My condolences.
The American left are the most intellectually uncurious bunch. Those acquiantances have told me rarely no one ever asks about their childhoods-- the lefties never do.

Last time I checked we were all born and we will all die. The hours, minutes, and seconds between those two events is all we get on this earth.
Notice how all the people who say fair all believe they should be able to claim ownership of your limited hours in order to augment their own? Only the insane of the imbecilic could actually think that the act of stealing one person's time for the benefit of another should be defined as fair.
