46 Reposting from the previous thread: My recipe for Wassail or mulled ale Tie up whole cloves, whole allspice, whole cinnamon, crystallized ginger, and orange peel in cheese cloth and add to 5 bottles of brown ale and 1/2 bottle of madera in a crock-pot. Core 3 apples and 1 pear, all stuffed with light brown sugar, honey, and another brown ale and roast at 350 def F for 1/2 hour. When done, add all that to the crock-pot. Lastly, add a few drops of bitters and serve when hot.

94 The dialect test didn't work for me. I'm dialect confused because of moving around so much my adult life. I changed many words when I got married to avoid "discussions" with hubby about the proper naming of things. Plus I've noticed everywhere we've lived has a different name for yard sales, and I don't use the word "dinner" anymore. To avoid confusion we have lunch then supper. Dinner does not exist. I also pronounced many things properly growing up so don't exactly speak the same as the rest of my family.

138 dialect test was not very accurate for me but I have a feeling it is because I did not grow up in a single location - between years 1 and 10 I lived inseveral states and several regions. Also, you do adopt new stuff. When I moved into nyc I eventually quit referring to carbonated beverages as pop and started calling them soda . Several questions in the test made me choose between phrases I had used at different times. It placed me as living on a detroit madison axis. I have never lived in either, an I35 axis would have been more accurate.

157 On that map that says about who brings gifts, I think I have to set you guys straight, at least from the german perspective: St. Nikolaus (or Santa Claus as you call him) comes on December 6th, when the german children put their shoes or boots in front of their door(the night from 5th to 6th) and get them filled overnight with candies and little toys. On the 24th of December, parents usually close off the living room for the kids to decorate the tree and put the gifts under it. It depends on the region of germany when the kids are let in the room, either 4 or 6 pm, a little bell is rung and they are let into the room to see what the "Christkindle" brought. That is the time to exchange gifts. December 25th is totally reserved for festive eating an drinking. Plus December is also a holiday, like boxing day in England.

166 RIght now I am probably the only person in the WORLD listening to a very interesting and now-forgotten Christmas record: Tennessee Ernie Ford and the San Quentin Prison Choir, "Recorded at San Quentin Prison." ...singing hymns. Think I'm kidding? Think again: http://wax33records.com/uploads/2/8/8/8/2888228/9197143_orig.jpg Found it in a free box on the street the other day. This will likely be my only Christmas-themed behavior this year, as I am neither Christian, nor religious in any way, nor are the immediate members of my family, which lets me off the hook. But hey, any excuse to hear serial killers and gang-rapists singing "Must Jesus Bear the Cross Alone?" and "Somebody Did a Golden Deed" is a good enough excuse for me. Standout track so far: "Higher Ground," which unsurprisingly is the title track. Brilliant. Tennessee Ernie Ford was a genius, both musically and media-wise.

Don't know where the Salt Lake City part came into the equation, but I did grow up within 60 miles of Santa Rosa, and most intriguingly, my father )who taught me to talk) was born in...Seattle! So I must have picked up some dialect from him. Not bad. Not bad at all.

BCochran, you are my new best bud.  Thanks for shedding the truth. The ASPCA and the HSUS run these heart-wrenching commercials, but do little to rescue cats and dogs.  In fact, they have rather poor ratings for non-profits because they give most of their time and money to lobbying against corporate agriculture.  They lobby to save cats and dogs, but fight farming.  If you love animals, please donate to your LOCAL pet shelters.  They are not affiliated with ASPCA and HSUS and they need your money so much more.  They will also actually use the money to rescue and place cats and dogs.  Thank you.

224 "Best part about the Pasadena freeway is that if you get totalled, injured or killed the other driver will be an illegal without insurance"

An old college chum who was a very sanctimonious green type back in the day called to say he was going to be at a get-together of friends. I figured he would show up driving a Pious -- er, Prius -- or some similar tiny eco-shitbox wheeled appliance.

Instead he arrived driving a behemoth Canyonero sized SUV. The sort of thing that requires two parking spaces and that gets ten miles per gallon with a jet-stream tail wind.

I said, "What the fuck? This is, uh, _noncongruent_ with your beliefs."

He was abjectly, profusely apologetic. "I live in L.A. now and we have small kids. My wife insisted. For safety. It's not my fault."

And he's right. Because the place is not only infested with illegals with no insurance, they're illegals with no insurance who get completely wasted late at night and do stuff like go rocketing the wrong way up freeway exits.

It turned out this was his second of the sort, because some drunk illegals had rammed and totalled the first one, and then taken off on foot, abandoning their unregistered beater car.

At least no one in his vehicle was hurt, two dozen air bags having gone off. The illegals who piled out of the wreck were pretty messed up, limping and bleeding and cussing a blue streak in Spanish, but that's what EMTALA emergency rooms are for: patching up bunged up people who shouldn't be in the country, at public expense.

Going to L.A.? Be thus advised.

238 I am just having a hard time thinking of Mikhail Kalashnikov as a hero. Some see him as hero and saint for his gun because his gun is used to liberate people from tyrants. But it is the number one gun in the world used by tyrants to kill people. I just see him as now that he has passed away he has to answer to the victims of the AK-47. Anyone that kills someone has to answer to the victim in the hereafter when it is their time. That also goes anyone who has their name attached to the weapon used. Mikhail Kalashnikov has a lot of souls to answer too.

Nonsense. McClain was going to LA because it was *Christmas*. He wouldn't have made the trip for New Year's, or Nakatomi Day, or what have you. And the bad guys were counting on the building being shut down for the holiday.

Plus, the use of Christmas carols in the sound track is half the fun: the Ode to Joy swelling to a climax as the vault door swings open has to be one of the great uses of classical music in the movies.

256 Which is one of the many reasons Independence Day is my mostest favorite holiday. It actually occurs on the day it occurred. Posted by: AltonJackson Are you kidding? The US went independent on July 2, 1776, not July 4. The July 4 was just the date on the Declaration document, which confirmed what was already voted on two days earlier. I thought everyone knew that. Wpedia: "The Declaration of Independence is a statement adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, which announced that the thirteen American colonies, then at war with Great Britain, regarded themselves as independent states, and no longer a part of the British Empire. Instead they formed a union that would become a new nation—the United States of America. John Adams was a leader in pushing for independence, which was unanimously approved on July 2. A committee had already drafted the formal declaration, to be ready when Congress voted on independence. Adams persuaded the committee to select Thomas Jefferson to compose the original draft of the document,[2] which congress would edit to produce the final version. The Declaration was ultimately a formal explanation of why Congress had voted on July 2 to declare independence from Great Britain, more than a year after the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War. The national birthday, the Independence Day is celebrated on July 4, although Adams wanted July 2." Sorry to break your heart, but even Independence Day is celebrated on the wrong date.

258 "San Francisco bans wood burning on Christmas Eve"

In Commiefornia, this is not new. For a couple of years now, they have had [highly paid generously pensioned public sector union asshats] driving around the neighborhoods in unmarked cars with infrared viewers.

To stamp out the terrible menace of people lighting fires in their fireplaces. I mean, if you allow THAT, who knows what it could lead to? We're talking slippery slope here, folks.

When I first heard about that practice, I figured that the thing to do was to call in a bunch of fake reports of illicit hearth fires in the Bayview-Hunters Point area of SF. Which is basically San Francisco's criminal armpit section. Anyone driving around in a car aiming a handheld device out the window is likely to be assumed to be lining up for a drive-by, and met with a returning fusillade of gunfire.

I'm tired of this crap. Everybody knows about Saturnalia and the pagan Yule celebration. The only reason to keep bringing it up is pure anti-Christian bigotry. The original tribes who explored the basin where the L.A. metroplex now stands called it The Valley Of A Thousand Smokes, and variants thereupon. Commenting on the perpetual haze in the air.

Even without industrial civilization, atmospheric physics and mountains had their say.

I do wonder how much of the haze was due to leaking volatile petrochemicals getting airborne. It is not popularly appreciated in 2013 just how much oil was underneath that part of California before humans began actively pumping the stuff out. Quite a bit. Which got out via natural seeps and vents and tar pits.

Shit, there is still a company quietly pumping oil from old fields underneath Beverly Hills via buried pipelines. The ecoholic Hollyweird crowd would go apeshit if only they realized.

Looks like high 70s and perfect tomorrow - the Christmas weather I grew up with in SoCal.  No waiting for SoCal kids to play with toys on Christmas day - just go outside and get to it.  Even better were the traditional shorts/shirtless touch football games at the local college practice field on New Year's Day (before the Rose Bowl) when we were young teens.

Thanks to you all, here's to hoping our hopes and desires for the world and country are not in vain.  For now, roast pork loin with rosemary and sage from the backyard, egg nog, good pinot from the central coast, and See's to top it off ....

I guess she didn't think it was a big deal since I wasn't raised Catholic and mass hasn't been my tradition, but I went last year and loved it. The music, the pageantry, the timeless connection to something much bigger and holier than myself. It was glorious, a true religious experience. I miss it. Well, I stuffed the stockings, wrapped the last gifts, and now I'm sitting here drinking a beer and doing insurance paperwork. Not exactly the moving experience I was counting on. This beer has a few friends in the fridge, I wouldn't want it to be lonely in my stomach, I think I better drink those too, for solidarity's sake. Maybe I'll work on taxes next. Festivus!

When I was a kid in the 70s, there was a hot dog cart down the street from me that sold meatball wedges for a buck and a half, and for those of us with limited funds, a 'sauce wedge' for a quarter. They were soooo good, I can still taste them. Definitely one of the better childhood memories.

China's own massive defense outlays - at least $90 billion this year - and the lukewarm attitude of Taiwan's once steadfast American ally to providing the island with state-of-the art military hardware have also had a negative impact on the thinking of many Taiwanese, including potential recruits.

The early Church only "celebrated" the story of Jesus' death and resurrection--that was the key part, the fulfilment of The Covenant. But after many years, people started to ask why the Mass doesn't celebrate all parts of His life, including His Birthday. The Pope at the time asked Church scholars to determine what day that was. Some of those scholars were familar with a debate among Jewish scholars--even at the time of Christ--that great prophets always die on the anniversary of their birth or conception. They had found a "pattern" with the couple of prophets where they knew the details. Well, the date of Jesus' Death was known (it was tied to The Passover and that is tied to the Spring equinox and lunar cycles.) The Pope didn't want to celebrate Jesus' Death and His Birth on the same day-the focus of Lent and Easter is reflection on your life and repentance for your sins. So they assumed that Good Friday (March 25 that year) of the year he was crucified was the day of His conception. And adding the length of human gestation (I think they used 270 days), that gives you December 25.

Strangepork, one problem with the small town ER is that it is usually a 12 hour shift.  The other major problem is that unless you have a couple partners who want to work nights only, you get whipsawed between day and night shifts constantly.  A third problem is that lots of times you're short staffed.  I work in one ER full time and 2 others contingent, and all 3 are currently short staffed.  So instead of working 10 shifts a month at my full time job, I'm working 14, and once I pick up at the other two hospitals I end up working 20+ shifts a month, which translates to about 60 hours a week--which are split between day and night shifts.

471 Well, I got it. If you read my previous post, I was bumming about missing mass. Some good Christmas music later, especially this video of my favorite carol (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Zh-yR0pbmU), and I managed to reach that peaceful place in my soul. I have tears on my cheeks. Luke 2:8-14 8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” That's something I would have loved to have seen. A dark night, the milky way wheeling above, and hosts of angels singing across it. Magnificent.

474 Dear amazing people: I hope alla y'all have a happy Christmas. But, for some, happiness is measured and relative. Maybe your blessings seem too few compared to your troubles. Maybe you can't be as thankful and as joyous as you'd like. Don't we all have our stresses! God at least bless us all with the patience to muddle through, and enduring faith in the divine hand. By incomprehensible miracle, the Son of God was born as one of us dust-to-dust mortals, and died the most inspiring death. In life, in death, in rising again, he revealed our Father's love, changed humanity, and is still changing lives and saving the world. We may wander from him, but he never abandons us. So, a Christmastide prayer, to Our Father, and Jesus, and any designated subordinates in charge of mortal pixels and packets: Keep Ace and his cohorts in blogging safe from harm and free of threat. Fill them with your righteous spirit and guide them to Truth. Confound the demons and the trolls with their own mischief, and send your Pixys and angels with swords to defend, strengthen, and increase the supporters of liberty and justice. Bless this virtual place and its actual population in the year to come. Bring your cooling grace when flames threaten to erupt among us. Grant us abundant wisdom to do what's right, with bountiful mercy for certain irrepressible moronic indulgences. Amen. Okay, the bar's open again.

480 CC, I wouldn't want to be working your schedule.  The 60-odd hours a week sounds familiar though, that's about how much Mrs. Strangepork works.  Just about as much as a person can work, year after year.  The trouble with family medicine is that every year more of that time is consumed by paperwork BS, and patient contact time decreases (along with compensation, of course).  I bet you have to deal with the same trend.  Hang in there, friend.

481 Here's abput the only place I can complain about this aside from to spouse. Our little rural church had a lovely Christmas service. It was beautiful outside, snowing a little when church started and we had Holy Communion. In my tradition, you don't have it every week. Everybody who was there had family with them except the 98 year old patriarch of the church, She has two sons who live about 10-20 minutes away. Neither of them made the effort to be there. I realize one has grandchildren and great grandchildren and maybe they were with them, but the other one is estranged from his own wife kids and probably was out somewhere getting hammered. I am very sorry he had an addiction problem and pray for his recovery but I could tell she was upset about being the only one without family , She's not going to be around much longer. Couldn't either of you boys get your selves to church knowing that it would have meant so much to your mom-who by the way is named Mary?.

487 Yah, Stragepork, that schedule isn't that uncommon for some office-based specialties.  Where I did my training, huge medical center, the ER docs only worked more than the minimum for full time if they wanted.  In the ER it's usually worse than FP because you can easily stay an hour or two late if you have a really sick patient, and I live at least an hour away from each of my jobs.  So, a 12 hour shift often  turns into a 15 or 16 hour day, throw in eating a meal and some sleep and that's the whole day.

The total number of surgical abortion clinics left in the U.S. is now 582. This represents an impressive 12% net decrease in surgical abortion clinics in 2013 alone, and a 73% drop from a high in 1991 of 2,176. Of 87 clinics that discontinued surgical abortions, 81 are permanently shuttered while 6 abortion businesses ceased surgical abortions, but continued to sell that abortion pill. The figures do not include the 11 abortion clinics that were closed temporarily in 2013, then reopened later in the year." I have met people in Silicon Valley who commute in from the Central Valley (despite the similar names, they are not geographically contiguous) and who have a 3+ hour commute. Each way. Every workday.

I think that's insane. Destructive of health and of family life. But people do it.

512 285 "L.A. was famous for its smog, in part, because it was surrounded on 3
sides by mountains -- not huge ones, sure, but enough to keep the stuff
from dissipating."

The LA Farmers' Market is very near the La Brea Tar Pits, so there are some pretty obvious hints of the hydrocarbons underlying the area. Funniest thing happened a couple of years back -- a guy was walking along and tossed a cigarette butt on the sidewalk -- only to have a five-foot burst of flame whoosh out of a nearby crack.....he just happened to pick a time the hydrocarbon pool was belching natural gas.

Also, the city of Carpinteria (on the coast closer to Santa Barbara) was named that because the original Spanish explorers noted the local Indians making canoes from planks and sealing them with black goo collected off the beaches....which is somewhat inconvenient for the eco-crowd that likes to blame the black goo on the oil industry generally and the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill specifically.

513 Fen - That situation you described stinks. I searched for a service this evening, and was shocked to find none nearby. I tried four different churches. I went to the Lutheran Church on Sunday morning, but I don't think that's my cup of tea. Probably didn't help that it was the last day for that Pastor. I may try again this weekend. I'm hoping she'll bring the kids over tomorrow, btw. (doubt you remember, but they're not mine - I have no legal right to see them). They call me dad, I'm all they've ever known as a dad, and I know they miss me as much as I do them. I'm.actually considering just showing up. It's been a month since I've seen them...

515 497 "CC, an hour commute? That really sucks. A commute can be the worst part
of the day, and one that long? You must have a strong constitution."

I have met people in Silicon Valley who commute in from the Central Valley (despite the similar names, they are not geographically contiguous) and who have a 3+ hour commute. Each way. Every workday.

I think that's insane. Destructive of health and of family life. But people do it.

One guy bought a light airplane and moved to a planned community with its own runway. It cuts his commute from 3 hours to 90 minutes. But how long can you strap on an aircraft at the start and end of a demanding professional workday, five days a week or more, and not make a smoking hole in a hillside somewhere en route?

You have no idea -- here in California, you pretty much have to treat all of the Spanish as if they were "blah-blah-blah", because there are tons of people who have no idea what it means. So you say things like, "I saw a bunch of Alcatraz pelicans" or "I went over the pass in Paso Robles" or I went to "The Cats restaurant in Los Gatos" -- or even "the snowy sawtooth peaks of the Sierra Nevada".

Depending on your vocabulary, you run into some weirdies, too. There's a major thoroughfare nearby that is "Alameda de las Pulgas".

Posted by: cthulhu at December 24, 2013 10:23 PM (T1005)

537 FS, I thought so--Mrs. Crank's father was a travelling minister, Nazerene IIRC.  The only thing he wouldn't do was the Holy Roller thing.  She tells the story that one time they drove to a church in West Virginia, and they were handling snakes.  Quoth her father, "Sorry, brother, there's only two ways to deal with a snake--a shovel or a shotgun."  He then turned around and left.

Posted by: Conservative Crank at December 24, 2013 10:23 PM (b2cFu)

538 I think snake handling is an unusual thing. I don't understand the theology behind it. Yes, they were protected from snakes in the early church. It seems to me that if you're in there handling snakes you're being presumptous. After all, the Scripture says "Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God."

The "Valley of the Smokes" thing was because smoke from campfires would rise straight up for a couple of hundred feet and hit an inversion layer, and just flatten out -- so when there were a number of parties (or a wildfire) in the LA Basin, there were all these pillars of smoke running up to a ceiling of smoke, and the air immediately above would be clean -- and this was readily observable from the hills surrounding the area.

In my first job after college, I lived in Newbury Park and commuted into Encino on the 101 Freeway, and when you crest the last rise before heading into the San Fernando Valley, you're usually in the clear no matter how much smog there is below you, and you can really see the top edge of it. Oddly enough, there seems to be an instinctive bottleneck there where drivers go, "oh, shit! I gotta drive into that?!?!?"

over the pass in Paso Robles' or I went to 'The Cats restaurant in Los

Going over the pass from Paso Robles leads to the genuine heart of coastal central California. A steep and scary ride down into San Luis Obispo and parts beyond.

An absolutely beautiful part of the planet. California is wasted on Californians.

And, of course, that's the "Cuesta Grade" (Spanish/English: "Slope Slope"). I've had some history on that bad boy....I've driven it when there was a full-fledged wildfire on one side that was lighting spot fires on the other. Another time, I followed taillights through dense, dense fog....hoping that they didn't suddenly drop downward. With unlimited funds and some sort of force-field to keep the Progressive state at bay, I'd love to retire there.

But you're wrong to say that California is wasted on Californians....it's wasted on Progressives. Nancy Pelosi was born in Baltimore; Barbara Boxer is from Brooklyn; Arianna Huffington is from Greece; Tom Hayden is from Detroit -- there is no end of Progressive assholes who were born in other places and came to California to royally fuck it up. Me, I was born here -- I'm working on leaving.

There are a number of big winners that have done well.  By and large, they kept their day jobs and put the money into trusts or other investments so they can't just go nuts.

If I won hundreds of millions, I might have to retire from medicine just because of the jackpot lawsuit mentality.  But I'd find something else to do as a job, because otherwise I'd get very bored and start doing very foolish things with the money.

Don't let the bias throw you. The vast majority of people who won big lottery jackpots never had a 'look at the tragic result' story told about them because there wasn't anything to exploit. By and large, those jackpot winners who went berserk and self-destructed were already doing so on the cheap. But that doesn't sell newspapers.

678 Carol, she's at her grandparents.  Waiting to hear if our lawyer made bio-father crawl back under a rock.  We will not be taking custody of her ourselves, the risks are too high.  We will try to get her placed in a residential treatment program once the dust settles.

DDR, I saw a funny Drudge headline today about whether HuffPo has yet to turn a profit. If you recall, someone bought HuffPo for a buncho bucks, and Arianna scored a big payday of around $300 million. The plebes writing for HuffPo are mostly unpaid hacks though. The hacks whined about 'where's our share?' and received a nice raspberry in response.

I hope they had to pay taxes on the raspberry received.

Cthulhu, her grandfather is currently laid off and so he can watch her every moment of the day, which neither I nor Mrs. Crank can do.  Furthermore, he is physically better suited to disarming or restraining her than Mrs. Crank is with her pregnancy.

Honestly, there is no safe situation right now.  My niece and her sister, who is a borderline personality in the making, may very well go Thunderdome on each other if they are in the same house long enough.  But the alternative is her doing something to hurt Mrs. Crank or my unborn son, which I cannot abide.

683 I either bought or uploaded all my favorite Christmas songs & put on CDs for my late Mother's entertainment system at nursing home. I donated all CDs to nursing home when she passed away. Most that I bought are also on my Mac, but songs that I copied from CDs are on my oils Windows Vista, that I upgraded to 7. I should turn that on to see if it still works. I was about to take a hammer to it a month ago because it kept turning itself on & off. It worked last week. Elvis & Dean Martin were among my favorite Christmas songs. I cracked it on December 16 because I have wireless printer set up on Mac, but program I use to log into work will not recognize wireless printer. I cracked that Dell moving it to connect to printer because I worked from home that day & a few others last week. Most of the sings I bought from iTunes are old songs I got to burn to CDs for my mother.

I was seeing the same risks that you cite, but I'm very much encouraged by "he is physically better suited...." In general, when you refer to "grandparents", the mental picture is not so robust.

Blessed are they who walk into peril for another's sake, eyes open and unafraid, knowing that it is far better to suffer harm in a righteous cause than to prosper by turning away from good.

You've got a handful to deal with. Best o' luck. Keep us posted.

My only living relative is a sister in Texas and myself in Florida.  Christmas Eve for me the last few years is always best spent at the VA Hospital walking the wards with nothing more than a kind word.

The veterans have been regaled with cards, food, etc., but the missing link is always human contact.  Some are ornery and mean bastards, but others are grateful to just talk about stuff.  Asking questions about their youth or some military event will generally initiate conversation.  About stuff.

I have been very fortunate in life, and many of these old men have not. My Christmas gift is the ability to remain positive in the face of overwhelming sadness, and to live another year for this very simply mission.  Praise be to God and bless all of his children.  Merry Christmas to all!

700 Fenelon That is awful. A 98 year old mother is a wonder to cherish. No matter what their issues are, they should have gone to services to be with her. They will be crying like babies when she is gone, they should make the effort while she's still with us.

703 Edward Snowden will deliver the "Alternative Christmas Address" on Britain's Channel 4. In the past, the address was given by figures such as Ali G and Sharon Osborne. The "Alternative Christmas Address" is the channel's answer to the Queen's message to the country. Oddly, I bet none of them actually respond to what the Queen says in her address. Anyway, Snowden is full of himself. Keep freezing your ass in Russia.

We had dinner for four. Started out with a turkey -- Butterball. It's pre-brined, so it should be totally easy....pain in the....to start with, it was in the garage fridge, so it was frozen into an icy bowling ball. Had to liberally bathe in warm water before the neck and gizzards could be extracted. Butterball does some weird surgical thigh tuck that blocks the body cavity -- I ended up just cutting it -- doesn't bag the neck (took me forever to get the bottom part unfrozen off the spine) -- and isn't clear in their labeling about what is and isn't included. Stuffed the neck and body cavities with rosemary sprigs cut from the garden. Put spine up into the oven.

Next fun -- roast tomatoes. Toss a couple of cloves of minced garlic in a baking dish, throw in savory, basil, and parsley, drizzle with EVOO, and roughly chunk in a bunch of tomatoes (>60% Roma). Throw in oven, remove when you have some charred tips on top. This is the easiest and non-screw-up-iest recipe out there. It'll never come out exactly the same way twice but it'll never be less than totally delish.

Had green beans steamed over white wine with a drizzle of dill butter. To show you how concerned I was about this, the dill butter is "shake dill into microwaveable bowl, throw in half-stick butter, nuke until melted."

Stuffing....take a couple of boxes of cheap, generic stuffing mix, substitute white wine for 1/3 of the liquid, ignore the bullshit about "healthy spread" and just use butter. Add herbs, garlic, and bouillon until you have "herb soup" instead of water, then dump their stuff in. Oh, and run a bit dry.

The BH also had some cranberry something on the table, I also had some Heinz canned gravy.

Dessert was the BH's souffles.

Got total raves about everything.

CC had status @415, believe the little one is at 15 weeks.

There is a local chain here that caters to the restaurant trade, so I've got pre-minced garlic in a jar and dried savory leaves, but -- again -- the real coolness of this is because it's almost impossible to screw up.

And now for the theory: the great mass of this is tomato. When heated, tomatoes sweat moisture. In normal circumstances, this might evaporate into the atmosphere -- for this dish, it flows downward and is protected by the olive oil. Instead, the fluid mixes with the herbs and garlic, forming a rich base of flavor.

So strange no one ever mentions how he bit on the Elvis style of dress & even the glasses! Granted, I respect Costello more than Presley...
