Overnight Open Thread (12-25-2013) - Lazy Christmas Evening Edition
— Maetenloch

Merry Christmas All. Leftovers are on the table and the port-a-potty is next to the garage. I'm claiming this here bottle of cheap champagne sparkling wine and going back into my cave to keep working on Plans and Projects. I'll check back in later to make sure we won't be losing our deposit.

No One Is Beyond the Reach of the Comedy Police

Not even Steve Martin.

The storm started Friday when he invited people to ask him grammar questions on Twitter.

Someone wrote, "Is this how you spell lasonia?" to which Martin replied: "It depends. Are you in an African-American neighborhood or at an Italian restaurant."

The Perpetually Offended Humor Monitors were not amused and Martin quickly tried to explain:

"I knew of the name Lasonia. I did not make it up, nor do I find it funny. So to me the answer was either Lasonia (with a capital), or Lasagna, depending on what you meant. That they sounded alike in this rare and particular context struck me as funny. That was the joke," he wrote on his website.

But it was too late - he was already condemned as a hateful thought-criminal and the internet mob was summoned based on misquotes from Salon and TMZ. On the other hand Steve does know a lot of people so with a bit of groveling he'll probably still be allowed to keep working.

Jimmy Being Jimmy

[Update: This quote seems to have come from comedian John Fugelsang instead of Carter. I still stand by my rant though based on prior offenses.]

And still casting out nasty slurs and insults inside a soft drawled voice. Having the government take money from people and then give it to other people isn't Christian charity - it's really theft and redistribution of income designed to make you feel all charitable and decent without having to lift a finger. But then Jimmy Carter has never been charitable to anyone who dares disagree with him.

Okay I Did Not Know This Factoid

Mannheim Steamroller I understand. A Mannheim Steamroller Christmas sounds exactly like what it is: an electro-classical New Age Christmas record made by an advertising jingle-writer from Nebraska. Strangely enough, Chip Davis, the founder of Mannheim Steamroller, was also the songwriter behind the completely fictitious country music star C.W. McCall and his 1975 #1 hit "Convoy," so that either proves my cultural dis-overlap/star-cluster theory or refutes it. Either way, the incongruity of a plains-state advertising executive writing both the theme to a Kris Kristofferson trucker movie and a proto-steampunk bleep-bloop Xmas album is somehow easier for me to understand and enjoy than of a shiksa Texas millennial contest-winner singing lewd gospel-voiced country-rock Christmas carols. If you told me that Kelly Clarkson was an invention of a Nebraskan jingle-writer I would be expected to smirk knowingly because that conforms to the blue-state counter-narrative of my own narrative of hipster superiority. But Kelly Clarkson is real.

Chris Matthews' Christmas Hate

Because politics and hate never take a holiday. What a sad way to go through life.

Most Americans view Christmas as a time to consider such lofty things as peace on earth and good will toward men.

Not MSNBC's Chris Matthews who actually devoted his entire Christmas Eve Hardball show to mercilessly attacking eleven conservatives with assistance from a panel of some of the most conservative-hating liberals in the nation.

Icelandic Highway Delayed Due to Impact on Endangered Elves

In case you thought the American EPA and its allies didn't have some trump cards up their sleeves.

Elf advocates have joined forces with environmentalists to urge the Icelandic Road and Coastal Commission and local authorities to abandon a highway project building a direct route from the tip of the Alftanes peninsula, where the president has a home, to the Reykjavik suburb of Gardabaer.

They fear disturbing elf habitat and claim the area is particularly important because it contains an elf church.

The project has been halted until the Supreme Court of Iceland rules on a case brought by a group known as Friends of Lava, who cite both the environmental and the cultural impact - including the impact on elves - of the road project. The group has regularly brought hundreds of people out to block the bulldozers.

Could Have Used a Gun

After first robbing the wife the man came back 12 hours later to rape her on video tape. The couple were forced to fight off the would-be rapist with fists, wasp spray, a baseball bat and eventually a knife - fatally wounding him.

An intruder who was stabbed to death after breaking into a gym owner's house had been planning to sexually assault his wife and video tape it, according to reports this week.

Ken Boonstra was stabbed to death by a 26-year-old woman while her husband attacked Boonstra in their Washington home.

Police have now revealed that Boonstra, 48, had a camera and tripod in his pocket when he broke into the couple's home.

The couple, who own a local branch of a gym, are not being identified because they are the victims of a crime. The wife's mother and the couple's 7-month-old daughter were both in the home at the time of the attack.

The Original Reviews of 10 Classic Christmas Movies

Some were seen as classics from day one while others barely got made.

Snoopy and his pals overcame a lot of troubles to make it to the small screen in 1965. Executives didn't like the slow pace of the show. They didn't want Linus to recite Bible verses. They hated that there was no laugh track. And they thought having the children be voiced by real children instead of adult voice actors was the worst idea in broadcast history.

Turns out they were wrong about all of it. It's been estimated that nearly 50 percent of households with televisions tuned in to watch A Charlie Brown Christmas that November, and they've been coming back ever since.

Being Right vs Being Happy - A Scientific Study

Intervention

The intervention was for the male to agree with his wife's every opinion and request without complaint. Even if he believed the female participant was wrong, the male was to bow and scrape.

Main outcome measure

We measured quality of life with a Likert score of 1 to 10 (10 being the best possible quality of life). Although our tool was unvalidated, it was thought to have face validity. It was justified on the grounds that brevity was essential, given that the intervention was administered in a potentially complex domestic environment.

And here were the results:

F1.medium

But the researchers believe that more study is needed.

Many people in the world live as couples, and we believe that it could be harmful for one partner to always have to agree with the other. However, more research is needed to see whether our results hold if it is the male who is always right.

No, people need to learn a little basic human decency.   I could not even begin to tell you what some of my family members' politics are, other than my dad's twin who is an Obot and whom I finally told that we are never discussing politics ever again, because when we are together for family things, we don't talk politics.

60 With regards to Jimmy Carter: He revealed that it was his grandson that helped the video of Mitt Romney speak about the "47%" that were not reachable by his ideas because they were on the Federal dole, as Romney spoke at a private fundraiser. And Jimmy was pretty proud and self - righteous about it. And this guy (his grandson) is running for governor of Georgia next year. Jimmy is the kind of Christian who likes to wear his self-righteousness on his sleeve and have it both ways. I think Jesus would have some harsh but thoughtful words for him. The bulk of the OS install doesn't require any input. And the various updates take a looong time but again don't require much input.

The only complication is that there is a bug that has cropped up in how XP deals with updates that requires a workaround of manually installing the IE8 upgrade and its cumulative patch rollup. Microsoft is aware of the problem but considering that XP support ends in April and installing XP from scratch isn't a very common task any more, whether it is high on their priority list is doubtful.

Most businesses of any size use imaging to rebuild machines that need it. That would be the case with these but I was completely uninvolved with the original setup of these machines and any other using that particular imaging setup, and nobody who knows where the files are stored has been answering the phone, so I just elected to do it the hard way. Fortunately, I have a full set of Dell OS install ISOs, so it starts off at SP3 with no need for activation or key entry.

Another bit of automation is Ninite.com, a great tool for getting all of the common freeware items installed with a single file. Chrome, Firefox, anti-virus, PDF read/write, optical disc burning, and some other stuff only takes a single click to install once you've created the file, which takes about five minutes if you know what you want.

I also got a bigger food processor, an extra bowl for the new, bigger stand mixer I got back on my birthday and 3 REALLY shiny sauce pans to replace old cheaper ones. I guess I'm not leaving the kitchen for a while. Now, if I could just get those two geese I bought killed and dressed I'd be really happy. You would not believe how hard it is to find someone to kill and dress geese. I thought it would be fairly simple, but no. Anyone know someone in central Texas that will do the job and that knows what they are doing. Oh, and isn't a big flake?

203 I know Gerry Brown was Governor & thought it was same Gerry or Jerry Brown that was reelected after years in 2010. Jerry (with a J) was governor and got re-elected. You see signs around the state for Edmund G. "Pat" Brown. That's his dad. Posted by: t-bird at December 25, 2013 11:18 PM (FcR7P) Pat Brown was elected in 1958. Before then, the California was a GOP dominated state, holding the state Senate for 60 years and the Governorship for 56 of 60 years. Pat Brown was re-elected by defeating Richard Nixon. He was defeated by Reagan, who briefly had the state Assembly as GOP for one of only two times since '58, and the state Senate for the only time since '58. Jerry Brown was first elected to a L.A. community college district race for trustee. He was elected to a statewide position in '70 and won a narrow race in '74 for Gov. In '78, he benefited by the major political issue neutralized that June by the passage of Prop. 13 which limited property taxes to 1% and limited the increase in actual dollars to what was then well below inflation. He won re-election. He was defeated for the Senate by San Diego Mayor and future Gov. Pete Wilson, who took over from GOP Sen. Hayakawa. Jerry Brown later became Mayor of Oakland, and then Attorney General in '06. California limits statewide elected officials of two terms per office, but it was not retroactive and passed in '90. Brown won his third term in '10 and will likely win by a large margin in '14. They are trying to get him to run for President again...

Cut and paste from thread below:

FWIW, the Iowa trip is a go. Plans are to cruise the southerly route through Memphis TN, St Louis MO, KCMO, then north to SW Iowa.

I'm taking off from Raleigh early on the 2nd and hope to be in Memphis (well, Millington actually, just north of Memphis) by 8 PM (7 PM local time), then I'll head out from there early next morning.

St Louis between 12:30 and 1, stop for dinner, KCMO around 6 PM and stop for supper, and SW Iowa two and a quarter hours after leaving KCMO (whenever that happens to be).

Any morons/ettes along the route that want to do a meet n' greet, I'm amiable.

250 I read the reviews of Christmas shows and movies, and there was a link to a newspaper review of the 1966 classic "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". http://tinyurl.com/lvpwtdt The reviewer sounded awfully jaded and uninterested. Really, WTF? Story and characters by Dr. Seuss? Narrated by Boris Karloff? Animation by Chuck FUCKING Jones? How in the wide world of sports can a cartoon get any better than that? However, the newspaper page also had an interesting article about the limitations of 1960s satellite and space probe technology for discovering life on Mars, or even Earth for that matter.

She does not need him- it's likely just geography. Gets her closer to TV studios by many miles, which is likely a good thing. And a real airport. I agree with others that she might not be the perfect candidate, but her influence can/will be enormous.

257 Any debt Palin had to McCain is fully expiated by the amount of crap she endured at the hands of his campaign staff. Yeah, it cast her into the national spotlight but she was already on the way up and would have likely been in a better position today for national office if she hadn't been McCain's VP candidate and had her governorship sabotaged as a result.

266 I have a request of the horde.  I come to you humbly and ask of you simply:

The Matriarch of a family, from which, spawned my Two Best Friends...

...has taken ill.

I ask for your prayers.

-This woman requested I take my hat off every time I entered her home.

-She, with daughter, requested Doors Remain Open amidst "Mixed Company".

-This woman has been a Faithful Servant of Jesus Christ our Lord for over sixty years.  She will have deserved her place in Heaven, should that be the case.

On Thursday, January 2nd, this beloved woman will have her bladder, and all reproductive organs removed.

Her doctor teaches other doctors in the "art" of these procedures.  She is in good hands.  (Cleveland Clinic).

I ask of you prayers because I know of no other collective of talent and caring greater than you fine people.

As I found myself on my knees earlier this evening, I bore emotional tears that I hadn't expressed in years.

Please pray for this fine woman; this beautiful soul whose advice and example have served me well over these many years.

Thank You All...

277 Where did you bozos get the idea that buying a house in AZ requires an Alaskan to actually move to AZ?

A huge number of Alaskans took advantage of the last housing crash to buy homes in sunny areas for wintertime getaways.  I know more than a dozen of folks that did and I am related to 4.  I have the name of a AZ real estate sales lady that had the good sense to specialize in AZ properties for Alaskans.

Most Alaskans do no more than 90 days out of AK at any one time for a host of reasons that I won't bother explaining right now.

No matter how much someone loves Alaska, most people have a set number (different for each individual) of Alaska winters in them.  Once they go over the number, they can do no more.  It is not a crime.  If you haven't experienced it, you just don't know.

Yeah exactly. A few months ago I tried a cab a friend of mine has. He had put a set of eminence redcoat private jacks in it. Those fuckers are just amazing. They are supposed to their copy of the 25 watt greenback, but they sound more like an H30 but way tighter and bigger. I have vintage cabs, but they don't leave the house anymore, and I only really used them with a few old marshalls that were tweaked for big gain and voiced for the old H30 speakers. I plugged the heads into my friends cab and was blown away. The private jacks sounded incredible, so I figured seeing I had a ton of the more newer cabs with the 75 watt speakers I could pull 2 aside and load them with the private jacks. I love them fucking speakers and was going to get a set. The wife conspired with a friend who owns a music store, so I got them today. The new celestions are made in china, so fuuuuck that. The private jacks are American, and they sound great.

303 So, I've got to share this one with the Horde....

We had Christmas dinner at our house this year on Christmas Eve, with the BH's Sister and her Partner, and the Sister said something about God or Bless Us or something, and immediately apologized for being too religious, saying that she didn't want to be ramming this down our throats or anything. When we went on our hike today, the BH and I were discussing this because it is just so odd.

The Sister and her Partner go to church every Sunday in San Francisco -- 50 miles from where they live. The Sister teaches Sunday school; the Partner's taking courses at a seminary. They are both flaming libs, and their church choir has actually sung for Obama. And, of course, they're immersed in fabulous culture, IYKWIMAITYD.

By comparison, the BH and I are not much into churches, but are respectful of those who are -- the BH got a scarf to cover her head while we were in Russia because that was the proper garb inside the Orthodox churches that we wanted to visit. We experience God on our weekend hikes, when we can see His trees and mountains firsthand, and know Him by his works -- but have little reason to talk about it. And, of course, as non-Progressives generally are, we tend to be polite.

And, yet, the CHURCH-GOERS thought to get all stumblingly apologetic about bringing up RELIGION at a CHRISTMAS dinner to people who RESPECT it.

My personal take? This Duck Dynasty imbroglio has got bat-signals going out on all Progressive groupthink channels that say, "keep Progressivism rabidly secular." Problem is, some of the groupthink channels are churches.

317 "Problem is, some of the groupthink channels are churches."

I have attended some of those churches at times. You never hear the name of Jesus. Not once. Every sermon is all about anything but Jesus.

I attend a church where it is all Jesus, all the time. His life, his teachings, his trial, his death on the cross, his resurrection, his return.

Big difference.

318 Speaking of Idaho, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that I received a Cell Broadcast message outside of Coeur d'Alene this morning wishing everybody within range a Merry Christmas. On one hand, I'm disturbed that I'm getting cell broadcast messages at all. On the other, I'm happy I'm in part of the country where (for the most part) it's not the crazy progressives in charge of everything.

It's one of those things like "liberation theology" being mired in slavery or critical theory being dismissive of critical thinking. It's a groupthink indoctrination center disguised as a place of worship, but very well-connected politically.....just as Jim Jones was.

cthulhu, it sounds exactly like that (@322).  Homosexual-friendly churches are not a problem, but homosexual-dominated churches seem kind of inauthentic to me, as much of the liberal homosexual political agenda cannot square the circle with several thousand years of Judeo-Christian teachings.  My (very limited) contact with individuals of that sort seems more of a vague spiritualism with a veneer of good works in the Catholic tradition, without the other elements (namely sin and personal suffering, along with a truly faith-based rationale for redemption).

@316 jc--Got a few days around New Year's to recover.  Almost as busy next month, but days off are spread around a bit more and not quite as many shifts to work.  I'm probably going balls to the walls until late spring when baby boy Crank arrives.

this will strike to the core of some, some not.

when it starts to hit the core, things get awkward ( a forced apology where not needed, a backing off of talking points, etc.)

 inauthentic is a good descriptor.

Their church does some good works -- feeding the hungry, providing some organization to the scrambled.....but spends an awful lot of time providing photo ops for SF politicos. And I have no idea of what theology they're pushing and very likely do not want. I think a lot of the contradictions you mention are usually resolved by omission......but, like I said, the folks who are in the church WEEKLY are now APOLOGIZING for introducing the slightest bit of religion into CHRISTMAS.

Totally off topic -- I was the controller of this manufacturing company a few years back and was trying to get the production activities to track with backlogged sales orders.....and our purchasing was getting this total bullshit slow-boat over lasers -- we were buying them for an "off-label" use with the provision that we could try 'em out and return the ones that didn't work for us, but they kept whinging around about the returns and creating artificial impediments....and, in the meantime, our purchasing guys needed to be on-the-ball for hundreds of parts we needed to get shit made. We were up to about 150 lasers sitting around in boxes needing to be returned, at about $1000 each, and it was taking up 2/3 the time of the purchasing guys just to maintain forward momentum.

Now the BH and her sister are from NYC, and the Sister was "between jobs", so I sought (and got) authorization to temp her in to just get the lasers returned. Our rep on this deal was a guy named Dudley, who we referred-to internally as "Studly Dudley" and he had evidently been tasked to do anything in his power to slow and/or stop the returns.

So we brought the Sister in, explained the situation, gave her the pile of stuff, told her who the players were, showed her the communications to-date, and gave her total control while telling purchasing that it was completely not their problem.

About Day 3, I'm walking by the office we stuck her in, and I hear her slammin' on Dudley....."what ELSE do you need for us to get RMA numbers and ship 'em back? What do you mean you need facility information, don't you know where your own goddamned factories are?" A week later, we didn't have laser boxes all over the place. One of the coolest and easiest things I'd ever done, and I still crack a smile about it all these years later -- getting a bunch of bureaucratic stonewalling? Recruit an NYC hardass with a mandate and go have a cup o' tea. Studly Dudley didn't know what hit him.

The problem with that CC, as I see it, is that it cedes the battleground  to the enemy.  Steve Martin could have just said, "it's a joke!  Fuck off!"  But because the left is perpetually angry, he was bullied into an apology.  When Chris Matthews spends an entire program demonizing conservatives, he stokes their anger which, in turn, encourages the left to commit vandalism, refuse to deal fairly with conservatives and encourage / abet outright treason.

When we bully the left and punch back twice as hard, they back off (see "DD").  I realize that perpetually angry and outraged is no way to go through life, but how else do you hold the bastards' feet to the fire?

Oh, and happy Boxing Day to you all.

It would be nice if our tax dollars went to the poor, but they don't.  They go to communist politicians such as Jimmy Carter.   I grew up on the side of needy - which is why I hate Democrats.  The poor would be so much better off if Democrats weren't taxing and stealing the first dollar you make. One of the first things Carter did was bring back all the draft dodgers from Canada.

354 Eh. The man you call Jesus took a whip to the equivalent of The Federal Reserve, the national bank, the Treasury, the IRS and the Congress, all rolled into one. Most Christians today take the whip to themselves, to other Christians and to people who are no better off than they are, socially, financially and politically. Walking into the House or Senate with a whip? Taking on the Federal Reserve, the IRS or the treasury with nothing but a whip? Not happening. They live in fear of everything but their own self-righteousness.

356 Jesus kicked people off disability and sent them back to work.  He got the dead off the voting lists at least twice. He proved you cant feed the poor on Filet-o-fish sandwiches for free without a miracle. He made alcohol without a license. He proved the government was corrupt and untrustworthy.   I really do like that Jesus fella.  The nonbelievers who try to berate his followers generally don't have a clue what he teaches and expects.

357 "LA Story" has aged surprisingly well. I hate rom coms, but that's a damn good movie. Steve Martin should tell them all to fuck off. He's got nothing left to prove. I'm kind of liking it that some of the formerly "edgy" comics are being caught in the PC dragnet. I do wish it'd be one of the more assholish types rather than Steve Martin.

358 Earlier this year, comedians Key and Peele did a bit where they played all of the team members, except for one, of the East/West college football teams. The names of the players became more and more outrageous, until the last player, a white guy, announces his name as "Dan Smith" from BYU.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gODZzSOelss

They've also got a recurring bit where a black teacher pronounces all of the names of the white kids as if they were "black" names, so "Blake" becomes "Ba-lakay", and "Denise" becomes "De-Nice". The best one, I thought, was "A-A-Ron" instead of Aaron.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd7FixvoKBw

I enjoy these guys' comedy, despite the fact that I'm a middle-aged, conservative white guy.

I'm also a fan of Steve Martin, and remember how his early film, The Jerk, started with him narrating how he was born a poor, black child.
