Overnight Open Thread (12-26-2013)
— Maetenloch

Quote of the Day

"We in the United States may not believe that we are engaged in an ideological struggle with anybody, but other people are engaged in an ideological struggle with us. We in the United States may not believe that there is any real threat to our longtime alliance structures in Europe and Asia, but other people think those alliances are vulnerable and have set out to undermine them. ...We are intellectually, economically and militarily unprepared to contemplate Great Power conflict, let alone engage in the hard work of renewing alliances and sharpening strategy. But History is back, whether we want it to be or not. Happy New Year."

Quote of the Day II

I said in an earlier post, and I'll say again here:  The Left makes inroads into institutions, while conservatives abandon them.  Theirs is the better tactic.  Or, as I've also said before, Leftists have horrible ideals and great tactics; conservatives have great ideals and horrible tactics.

Obama Engaged in a Campaign of Civil Disobedience Against ObamaCare

Heh. At this point I don't even know what parts of the law will still be operative later this week. And Obama probably hasn't decided that yet either.

In the great tradition of American civil disobedience, President Barack Obama is defying a law. It's just one that he himself lobbied for, signed, and lost a house of Congress over. Even Henry David Thoreau would be hard-pressed to understand this one.

It's Good to be Part of the Nomenklatura

So you don't have to worry about those pesky laws meant for unimportant people.

No charges will be filed against a Montrose city councilwoman who said she forgot her handgun was inside her purse when she brought it through security last month at Montrose County Regional Airport, while the councilwoman has agreed to participate in adult diversion, Mesa County District Attorney Pete Hautzinger said Friday.

Or regulations about letting your service weapon get stolen through sheer negligence.

Jesse Jackson Is Desperately Seeking Relevance

So he's trying to insert himself into the A&E-Duck Dynasty affair.

Rev. Jesse Jackson weighed in on the raging Duck Dynasty controversy over star Phil Robertson's opinion on homosexuality, claiming, "the statements uttered by Robertson are more offensive than the... driver" of civil rights icon Rosa Parks' bus.

According to the Daily Mail, Jackson added: "At least the bus driver, who ordered Rosa Parks to surrender her seat to a white person, was following state law." But Robertson said what he said "without cover of the law." And Jackson said the statements Robertson made in answering a GQ reporter's question were given "in a context of... 'white privilege.'"

...Instead, Jackson is demanding that Robertson's "indefinite" suspension be upheld and he also wants a meeting "within 72 hours with A&E executives and Cracker Barrel's CEO to discuss the future of Duck Dynasty memorabilia."

Yes I'm sure Jackson is very interested in di$cu$$ion$ about ra¢ia£ h€aling. With Jesse Jr. in the pen I guess someone's gotta run the family shakedown business even if it means coming out of returement.

Unemployed Single Mom Borrowed £1,700 From 8 Payroll Loan Companies To Buy Hundreds of Christmas Presents for her Kids

And now she says she can't pay them back. And somehow it's all the loan companies' fault. Irresponsibility thy name is Katie McGill.

A single mother-of-two who lives on benefits used payouts from eight payday loan companies so her children could have a special Christmas.

Unemployed Katie McGill borrowed £1,690 from the controversial firms and will have start paying back £3,000 from January 2.

The 28-year-old from Devizes, Wiltshire, took out the loans of between £80 and £380 to buy 'hundreds' of presents for her children, but now fears she will not be able to provide for them when she tries to cover the repayments.

She bought a bike, a TV and a DVD player for both Mya-Renee, three, and Calvin, eight, and took them for a meal.

The jobless mother said: 'There were hundreds of presents under the tree. Their gran passed away this year so it was nice to be able to treat them.

'They got loads of computer games for their Xbox, they got a new TV and DVD player each, new bikes and loads more.'

I suspect her plan was to use her sob story to get people to give her enough money to pay off the loans after Christmas. Sadly it'll probably work.

End of the Line for Red Lobster?

I have fond memories of the lobster as a kid including the time they had an all-you-can-eat-shrimp night and a young Maet discovered he really, really, really liked shrimp. And the manager was really, really glad to see us finally leave.

Red Lobster isn't making enough money and its parent company, Darden, (which also owns Olive Garden and other chains), all but rang a death knell when it announced today that it would either spinoff or sell the seafood chain. While no Red Lobster locations are disappearing for now, this is bad news for the chain.

Yet Another Hate Crime Hoax

A man who told police he had been robbed and beaten at a Paris health food store a few days before Thanksgiving was arrested after he allegedly withheld information about the incident and has now been charged with filing a false report.

Joe Williams, 32, of 803 E. Wood St. was arrested Friday afternoon after turning himself in at the Henry County jail.

Williams originally told officers he had been beaten and robbed Nov. 20 at Healthy Thyme, which is at the same address as Williams' home. There was also a fire, and Williams had a homosexual slur written on his forehead.

Officers later found inconsistencies in Williams' story. Paris Police Sgt. Ricky Watson said Williams failed to bring up certain facts known to investigators on three different occasions.

"I can tell right now you don't know shit about dynamite."

Heh. Shit being the operative word here. It's a slow build so stick with it until the end.

2 Watching a show on UNCTV pbs station called "fordes and mills" about water in NC. The historian said "it was not unusual to walk fifteen miles in a day, you had to cross fifteen streams, there is hardly a mile in NC without a stream." Very interesting to me, not something I have considered but I have walked many miles in NC and I can see that his statement is hardly an exaggeration.

38 Saw "The Desolation of Smaug" today. Meh. Inevitably the Hobbit movies will suffer in comparison to LotR, but gratuitous (and crappy) CGI is a self-inflicted wound. Seeing a hero fighting a cartoon is not emotionally gripping.

Towards the end, though, I came to a realization that will make me appreciate these films more. This isn't a heroic quest trilogy like LotR. The characters - Bilbo, Thorin Oakenshield, even the Elves - are morally weak, and that moral weakness extends to all of Middle Earth. Their greed and self-concern are destructive, not least of all in enabling the return of Sauron and setting the stage for the redemptive struggle of the Rings trilogy. The films work better when seen as a tragic prequel to the heroic triumph of LotR.

40 I'm too tired to go back to that thread but "Frumious" wrote a nice piece about UUs (Unit Uni) They are very kind people and invested in helping others and their services do provide a sense of community. My problems with the hymns is when they take a original hymn Like "All Creatures Of Our God our KIng" and change it to "All creatures of the earth and air" and because I'm a trinitarian I like hymns about Jesus as Lord. I'm not trying to a thread to start to bash Unitarians. I just feel strongly about hymnody .

67 America's status as a superpower rested on five pillars: we had a superior population that could be drafted in greater numbers than most other nations; we could manufacture more than all other industrial powers combined (150% of all other WW2 combatants, Axis and Allied, with 50% of our production still going to commerce); we had a technological edge with the intellectual resources to make our own tech obsolescent within a few years; we were the leaders of a global alliance of Westernized capitalist powers; and we had the nukes and would use them. Today, in 2013, bringing back the draft would start a civil war; we can't understand or administer the tech we have (Snowden/Ames/Bradley), and wouldn't stay ahead if immigration was halted by a war; NATO governments would fall if they stood with us in a tough one; our manufacturing capability is a shell of what it was; use of WMD is understood to be a war crime requiring the imprisonment of everybody involved. And when my 8 friends tried that Endless Lobster promotion, after the sixth round they told us the oven broke. All tied together, as I believe God is punishing Gorbachev. "Ah! If only we held out 10 more years! TEN MORE YEARS!!!"

This one, however, had a question written in big magic marker lettering from a previous visitor: "Are these covered under Obamacare?" Hello, Horde!

............
Blah..  The Hobbit is a kid's story...  being from the 30's, it's much more adult themed than kid's stories of today.  Perhaps we can call it a young-adult novel.

It's a quest for gold.. an adventure.  There are very little noble emotions involved with the main quest.  But, there are redemptions.. and growth.  and loyalty.

Don't make more out of it than was meant to be.

The Hobbit, IMHO, is much better done than Jackson's LOTR.  LOTR was rushed and cheap.

Red Lobster in North Palm Beach closed about five years past.  In keeping with our new sensitivity towards minorities, I will carefully construct the reason for closure.

The restaurant demographic began to change, and the wait staff had a difficult time making a living because certain groups refused to tip.  The staff was in constant turmoil, and the managers lasted for short periods.

After approximately a year, the elderly white retired population no longer went for the "early bird" or the family groups for the early evening dinner.
The corporate management attempted to save the location, but finally came to the realization that it would never recover the reliable white clientele, and closed the location due to "unforeseen circumstances."

Today, the location is a father/son orthopedic surgeon facility coupled with physical therapy.  No good deed goes unpunished.

109 I too saw that dynamite story earlier, as Gerard dropped by and made a post (reminding me to check his site for new stuff).

The first time we ate at a Red Lobster was in Chicago, where they way overcooked the shrimp so that it was like rubber. Coming from the Gulf Coast, that was quite a letdown.

And when my best bud and I were around 18, his future ex-wife had an uncle with an all you can eat catfish place. Back then all you can eat places were rare. We got invited to dinner there, and decided to make them suffer. We each fasted for over a day, and ate northward of 5 platters of fish EACH, plus assorted side items.

It was our one and only invite.

126 CCW - A few years back, was standing in a bar parking lot after closing time one night talking with a gal from pool league (yes, she was hawt), probably 2:30, 3 AM. Cop pulls up. She's in her driverseat, I'm at her window trying to get my game on. Cop asks the stupid question, i told him i'm working here, he checks our IDs. Comes back within a minute with a serious attitude hassling her - you have a CC permit. Are you carrying now? Why didn't you tell me? He basically ignored me once he ran her tag and/or DL (not sure which is connected in VA), but i wondered why he was so concerned with a law abiding gun owner, while i could've been holding and he turned his back on me as if i wasn't there.

127 55 Pricing of clothes is a total mystery. Wife bought me a down Barbour vest for Christmas, $400. Didn't fit so back to Orvis, which did not have my size.
Searched the net for an hour, found one in upstate NY for $230, no tax, free shipping. Same vest.
Go figure.

I think it's like buying books or DVDs. Expensive when they come out, astonishingly cheap sometime later. The real price is the price if it didn't have the designer label on it. But to realize that price, you have to catch it when they're no longer extracting money from those who regard the newest thing in clothing as equivalently exciting to a new movie that has just come out on DVD. (and yes, I sort of called those people, if they're not women, ghey, but it was really subtle, right?)

About clothes being expensive.  My Grandma had a sportwear shop in Palm Springs back in the '60's to early '90's.  When I was in grade/jr high, I would spend Easter Break and some summer with her.  Even went to Market with her in LA one year.  I asked her why she raised the price from what she paid so much.  She doubled it from what she paid and added a little for shipping.  That way she could still make a little on sales and cover all the overhead.  Seemed to be similar at the temp Christmas job I had in retail clothes about 20+ years later.

I guess that vocab dates me a little.

226 Just to get this on an active thread, I'll hope you'll forgive the re-commenting...

A great night I picked to go out.

There's no reason for you to care about Toronto and the MFM up here (especially as mayors here don't have alot of special powers---they're mainly just one more vote on a city council, which is why it's different to support Mayor Ford than squeaky-clean P.M. I would think the local PD would be pretty friendly out there. I guess they're getting a little big for their britches? Posted by: shredded chi, the young curmudgeon at December 26, 2013 11:29 PM (5aFK0) Roanoke County cops are pretty laid back about things since it is the "Republican" part of the area, same with Salem City. Roanoke City? Nice looking downtown that they keep pouring money into on the latest "get rich quick" schemes that every "progressive little city like Asheville, NC" is doing. So now the police department is getting the "progressive city" bullshit hoisted upon it, and it is starting to show. Very few of the upper level officers are promoted from within, and those who are, are of certain protected classes. Lots of Lt.'s on down are retiring to go to work for other police departments in the region.

Beavers will totally re-landscape your environment, cutting off water to your irrigation/drainage and flooding outbuildings/roads, and the dams are quite solid. Dynamiting beaver dams is a cost-effective and efficient way of (a) restoring the desired landscape and (b1) giving the beavers a hint to relocate or (b2) sending them along to that great beaver lodge in the sky.

It helps if you start thinking of them as giant tree-killing flood-causing rodents.

You do it when the little bastards are setting up shop in the managed forest where you planted 1,000 trees 10 years ago, or at the radio repeater station that isn't going to appreciate being four feet underwater, or where they're going to inundate the spot where early settlers signed a peace treaty with the indigenous people, or at the low spot of the road that people depend on to get from A to B....

I would posit that man, and any & all of his actions are natural, thus, shooting that godforsaken beaver, making a hat out of his hide & a soup out of hos ass, then blowing up his damn dam is just as natural as a rainbow in April.

303 If nature had a force that destryoed beaver dams for their benefit, I would go with humans being an alternate opposite reaction to said dwms. As I personally know of none, tough to answer Nature does have a force that destroys beaver dams. (Damn, Nature has an answer for everything!). Beaver dams alter their environment. They provide good conditions for the growth of saplings and access to the same and beavers live in beaver heaven. Then they eat all the saplings and new ones won't grow and the beavers fuck off to dam a new stream. The old beaver dam rots and bursts and streamflows return. But that's in real nature, which has time. We cohabit restlessly with nature, so we intervene sometimes.

Posted by: Frumious Bandersnatch at December 26, 2013 08:37 PM (1xUj/)

304 287 Agreed, man is part of nature and this must be factored in. My point was that if blowing up dams is to be considered wrong or against nature, doesn't one need to look at what is considered "ownership" of the land? 321 A new Rob Ford-related item from just today if you'll forgive me.

One of the things about this is that Ford has had his (few) mayoral powers curtailed with the councillors unprecedentedly appointing a deputy mayor/overseer when legally the only thing that can see a mayor replaced by council for according to the letter of the law is for the mayor to be convicted of a criminal offence. (Ford hasn't been charged let alone convicted of a criminal offence.) BTW, the left is refusing calls for a quickie mayoral election to settle this issue.

The other day Purp bitched in a sidebar link about Ford not declaring a state of emergency because of the ice storm. Today the deputy mayor abandoned the city to fly to Florida for a one-day family get-together.

See the sock for a quick view of it and read the very brief report linked therein to the liberal-leftist Star reporting on the trip and guess how the report would have read had it been Ford flying out even just for one day.

Maintain vigilance for a bit -- it could be picking up smoldering. Where are the sensors?

We live in the 'burbs, and every so often, we smell smoke. The neighborhood was built-out in 1955, and many of the original owners are still here, and it isn't all that unlikely that one is burning trash in his fireplace.

In fact, two doors down we have one of the old-time politically-connected lawyers from when this town was pretty-"Wild West" -- and we've got a little story that we tell ourselves about how he gets the newspaper in the morning and reads the obituaries, goes to his filing cabinet and pulls the dossiers, reviews them during the day and burns 'em at night. Who was blackmailing who, covert affairs, bribes, payoffs....so every time we smell smoke, we think to ourselves that a little bit of the *real* history of Silicon Valley is going away forever.

369 Late to the party but I did get a chance back in the late 70s to play with a case of dynamite. The brother in law wanted to dig a pond on his farm and we tested out the dynamite as right the tool to get it done. The instructions that came with the dynamite were from about 1920 and mostly explained how to blow up ditches instead of digging them. Fun stuff but a heavy equipment was what dug his pond since it was cheaper and he wanted it near the house. Which the testing showed us was a bad fit for dynamite..

Anna, this is The Talk. You should have one in practically every room. They are cheap, they save lives, and you can use the pattern of alerts to screen out false positives and almost instantly focus in on real problems. We actually don't have one in our living room just now (though we have one in our garage), but when we had the godkids spend weekends here I put one up over the convertible couch.

I assumed you pulled it so that it'd shut up. Move it to a bedroom and put the battery back in. Then tour other rooms with it and see if it has a problem in any of 'em.

So, random comment on beavers, muskrat, etc.

I was born in California, raised in California, I've seen skunks and possums, coyotes and rattlesnakes, deer and bobcats....and I go visiting my aunt in Tennessee, and I'm driving in a mall parking lot, and there is this large creature moving around in a planted area, and I'm going, "holy shit! What IS that?!?!?"

And, thus, I was introduced to the woodchuck -- also known as the groundhog -- a 30-inch, 30-pound rodent that can burrow, swim, and climb trees. Oddly enough, they're seldom found in western zoos and they evidently litter the eastern landscape to the point where they're unworthy of comment unless observing weather-related phenomena in February.

This is one classic case where, as Dickens reports, "the law is an ass." It's a reason to have individually-batteried units, even where it would be easier to wire them to house current -- and easy to improve, as well. If an alarm is shrieking at say, F#, then all the concurring alarms should shriek at C.

And you can still buy individual battered units.

434 425 - Adriane Took me a minute, but I see what you did there. Yeah, cth - i think with modern alarm systems one can still determine which detector is sensing the "danger" if you can get to a control panel. But, in your avg new construction house, code says they all go off so you GTFO. If one lived in one of these newer homes, and one were so inclined, one could disable the "communication" wire that interconnects all smoke detectors, thus making them all work as individual units. But, I'm sure that by snipping or disconnecting that red wire, ones homeowners' insurance would be null and void in the event of a fire.

476 And we've now come to that part of the game show where we....Ask. The. Horde!!!!!

We're in California, south of SFO. We were hiking on Christmas Day and heard a sound was being made by some wildlife, but we couldn't identify it. There were at least two sources for the sound, and one would respond to the other, and then there'd be silence, and then they'd repeat. There was quite a bit of resonance involved, so it wasn't something squirrel-sized or smaller, and it was very low-pitched, sounding something like "K-K-K-K-K-K-K-K-K-K-K-K-K".

I certainly don't want to give it away or prejudice anyone, and I'd really like to know if there are some deer or birds that use that call.....but the closest match I'd heard before was an African lion at the Atlanta zoo, and it did sound sort-of-like an extended version of the part from 3:48 in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVZCAQP6eQM . Thing is, we'd hear it from far away down the canyon, then we'd hear it sort of close from uphill, then a pause, then far away downhill, and sort of close up....until it was sort of close down.

If there are two talking to each other, they're clearly not hunting, though I was keeping an eye on the rock and stone inventory nearby. But it did make our Christmas hike a bit more interesting than otherwise.

Funny you should mention that -- we do this hike all the time and have seen amazing things.....but usually not with our cameras handy. As an example, one time there was this whole flock of deer that was eating the landscaping around the entrance booth, and another time there was a huge flock of wild turkey invading the picnic area. So we've got a running gag that we'll see bigfoot fighting a space alien whenever we don't take our cameras. Because I'd used that very line, we were actually carrying a camera.
