Duck Dynasty 1, A&E, GLAAD, Bill O'Reilly 0
Still, the bottom line is that regardless of what A&E says to provide cover for itself, Disney, or the Hearst Corporation, Robertson was reinstated only nine days after being indefinitely suspended. Throughout his suspension he did not cower down to A&E. Rather, he said he had simply quoted the Bible in his comments to GQ and made clear that he would not apologize for doing so.
Bill O'Reilly is a big loser here as well. He too kicked Robertson while he was down, criticizing him for quoting the Bible in a way that singled out one group of people.
Par for the course for Bill O'Reilly - he's obsequious to those on the way up and kicks those who he thinks are down. Because just lookin' out for the folks.
Also What It's Like Being Put on GLAAD's Blacklist
In case you don't know the full extent of GLAAD's fascism, let me tell you what GLAAD did to me.I won't hyperlink this, but if you go to GLAAD's website and seek out their "commentator accountability project," you will find my name. This is GLAAD's blacklist. Within hours of GLAAD's publication of my addition to the list, which amounts to an excommunication from polite society, an e-mail was sent to the president of my university, along with dozens of other high officials in California, with the announcement: ROBERT OSCAR LOPEZ PLACED ON GLAAD WATCH LIST.
The e-mail stated clearly that as a result of my being placed on this list, I would never get a direct interview in the United States. (Whoever "they" are, they made good on the threat, because when I was brought onto Al Jazeera, they made sure that I was the only one critical of gay adoption, versus two hosts and two other panelists who were for it, and the host cut my microphone.)
According to the press release sent to my university, any media outlet introducing me would be bound to introduce me as an "anti-gay activist" certified by GLAAD as a bigot.

Biblical Scholar/MSNBC Host Joy Reid Blasts Palin for Having Christmas Tree
In a segment that was stranger than fiction on The Ed Show, guest-host Joy Reid claimed Palin was going against the Bible by displaying a Christmas tree in her home when she was interviewed for a Fox & Friends Christmas special."Certain parts of the Bible also appear to preach against let's say, I don't know, Christmas trees," Reid said, according to a Newsbusters transcript.
Reid then read Jeremiah 10-10, thinking she was indicting Palin in a game of "gotcha":
"For the practices of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel. They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter. Like a scare crow in a cucumber field, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good."
"Now, a Christmas purist wouldn't want to stray from the Bible on Christmas, would she?" Reid said.
Key distinction missed by Bible expert Joy Reid: No one worships a Christmas tree. Also note that Sarah Palin hasn't run for any office for over five years yet still accounts for something like 15% of all MSNBC coverage.
Narcolepsy Confirmed as an Autoimmune Disease
Immunologist Elizabeth Mellins and narcolepsy researcher Emmanuel Mignot at Stanford University School of Medicine in California and their collaborators have now partly solved the mystery behind these events, while also confirming a longstanding hypothesis that narcolepsy is an autoimmune disease, in which the immune system attacks healthy cells.
Narcolepsy is mostly caused by the gradual loss of neurons that produce hypocretin, a hormone that keeps us awake. Many scientists had suspected that the immune system was responsible, but the Stanford team has found the first direct evidence: a special group of CD4+ T cells (a type of immune cell) that targets hypocretin and is found only in people with narcolepsy.
Creeping Sharia: Reporting of UK Trial of Muslim Lawyers Banned for 'Cultural Reasons'
Because they might be shamed. It took an appeal by the Daily Mail to get the gag order lifted.
A man who was caught masturbating in the meat aisle of a Sainsbury's store has been banned from every supermarket in Britain - unless he is supervised by another adult. Eugenio Freitas, 49, was captured pleasuring himself through his trousers for 10 minutes on CCTV cameras. The married father of four went to the store in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire "fully intending" to go shopping, but then became overwhelmed by his "excessive sexual drive," a court heard.
But maybe not quite that much.
The 20 Best Movies Disappearing From Netflix on New Year's Day
It's unclear why they're being removed - limited space or studio restrictions - but you won't be able to stream them after Dec. 31st. One of the downsides of not owning a physical copy.

Dunno 'bout "Psychic Breast Readings", but I've volunteered to help with cancer screenings by means of a "Man-o-Gram".
The highlight of the exam, is that it's performed by using Braille.

"Par for the course for Bill O'Reilly - he's obsequious to those on the way up and kicks those who he thinks are down. Because just lookin' out for the folks."
A "moderate" relative of mine who likes O'Reilly was surprised to find I can't stand that phoney blowhard fake populist O'Reilly. My relative, who is "moderate" only in his own mind (I'd call him a lib) assumed that I love everyone on Fox News. Because my relative thinks everyone on Fox is "far right wing."
That goes to show you how much my relative has actually watched Fox (other than O'Reilly). And how much he actually knows about how conservatives think.

No news to me or most other Christians that Christmas trees are a Germanic pagan custom adopted by Christians - I believe I learned that from my parents set of World Book Encylopedias (the 1959 edition).
Leftists are so incredibly ignorant of Christianity that they think that "Christians adopted an old pagan custom for their own use" is some sort of big "gotcha?"

I was looking for the Cowboys game and caught a bit of "Alaska: The Last Frontier." The farm couple caught a duck eating her own eggs. Out came the axe and goodbye duck. Also showed a farmer shooting mice who had gotten into the grain supply. Guy shot 40 mice.
I like that they don't seem to whitewash the amount of killing farmers must do. I've tried to tell that to vegans who are "against killing." My dad was raised on a farm and he said killing pests and vermin - everything from mice and foxes and deer - is something you have to do every single day on a farm.

Can *anyone* help me find a description of the Battle of Kickapoo Springs (Texas, May 1870) that gives more detail than "Sgt. Emanuel Stance led a ten-man patrol to victory over an Apache raiding party, for which he received the Medal of Honor"? So far the closest thing to an eyewitness description I've been able to find is Willie Lehmann's account of his escape, and he didn't actually see the fight itself. There appear to be exactly two book-length biographies of Stance, both out of print, neither available in my library, and WorldCat refuses to retrieve any info on other libraries for me. And as my next book deals with the capture of the Lehmann boys, I really want to get the descriptions right!

You don't make a half dozen great movies by accident.
I object.
I defy you to watch Point Break and tell me "that guy can act." If you can do so without busting out laughing, you're a better actor than he is.
He has been in some good movies. Hollywood is not a meritocracy, though, and whatever the hell the reason was (I'm at a loss to come up with one), there is not a single movie or a single scene he has done that has caused me to think "wow, that was one hell of a performance."

The Kennedy's are a good example.
Okay, invoking the Kennedys when discussing Catholicism should be the equivalent of breaking Godwin's Law in discussing politics. 1.) They were too extreme an example to be emblematic of Catholicism, 2.) They were about as Catholic as Madelyn Murray O'Hare, 3.) JFK had some conservative beliefs, and 4.) to the extent Catholics went for the Camelot myth, so did half the country.
Look at what Pope Francis is doing, he seems to be letting the moment get to him.
Pope Francis is moving the church a bit leftward, but if you're familiar with church theology, it's really not that big a change from the previous popes.

Cozumel has super shore diving.
You get a map of site descriptions and basically just drive around the island and dive with your buddy, no boat required. Each site has yellow painted rocks at the entrance, one with the name and the other with the number.
In addition to being cheap, you don't have to get up early on vacation and haul all your gear to the edge of some pier.
We did pay to boat dive at "The Devil's Throat", a tunnel that starts at about 80 feet and lets out on the side of a wall at about 100 feet.
I was last, my tank got stuck in top of cave, mask filled, pitch black, panicked, instructor saved me. Big time freaked.
Posted by: Justamom at December 29, 2013 10:41 PM (Sptt
Sounds horrible -- caves have to be quite large if I'll enter 'em without seeing the other side, and I tend to move through them quickly so as to maintain trim. Part of the reason is that one time I got held up in one and was trying to maintain buoyancy control and not float upwards into a couple of lionfish.
The BH knows this quite well, and one of her more famous exploits was going through some lava-tunnel caves off Roatan when this total jerk we nicknamed "Dr. Twinkie" decided to stop at the exit to get a photograph with her behind him and me behind her. She body-checked him into next week 'cause she was looking out for me.

I had to uninstall the kindle app on my android, all of a sudden it didn't want to download any of my books. Apparently there's a glitch with the "new and improved" Kindle app that doesn't want to play nice with the 'Droid Razr. Good thing all my stuff is archived at Amazon.
And now that I've gotten that done...back to work I go. Three days, then vacation.

Anna, and rickl if you're still here - was on a congressional staff visit to Vandenberg in 1986 (?), primary purpose was Space Shuttle military facility. I still recall clearly that after we arrived we met immediately with the base commander, who talked about his beaches, wetlands, and species of birds for most of the briefing. It is a spectacular location and mostly untouched, and this guy was clearly an outdoorsman - but it was so ridiculous it was funny. He had the ultimate command, for his interests.
Used to enjoy watching the high altitude vapor/etc. trails of rocket launches from that site as a kid - you could see them hundreds of miles away, if the timing was right in terms of sunset.
On a related culinary note, any foodie or wino morons travelling through CA's central coast (and you should, constantly) should know that the place to eat near Vandenberg is in fact on the military reservation. Hitching Post #1, the original, is located a few miles off Hwy 1 in the middle of nowhere, not far from the base golf course. Town that used to be there was a railway construction boom town back in the 1930s. The second and sister restaurant, Hitching Post 2, was featured in the movie "Sideways", set in central coast wine country. But the original is far better in terms of cool, both due to location and intact decor, which includes a classic collection of signed photos on the wall. Rocket and missile launches, aviation squadrons, etc.

I propose a rules change: we'll keep the "one hour rule" for every post except the ONT; but' for the ONT we'll adopt the "twelve hour rule": if the ONT is up, save it for tomorrow morning.

First, it boasts a sentence in Aramaic, verse 11. The rest of the book and, for that matter, all of the Torah and the rest of the Prophets are in Hebrew. (Daniel and Ezra are in the Writings IIRC.)
Second, it's been heavily fudged between the Greek and Hebrew versions. And I do mean "versions" - the Dead Sea Scrolls have the original to Greek Jeremiah 10's. 'Tis much shorter. Also seems to make more sense. In fact that goes for most of Jeremiah, the Greek version is more internally consistent and makes more sense. I know I sound like I'm praising Hamlet in its original Klingon but . . .
Third, it seems to be the basis for a very old apocryphal work, The Epistle of Jeremiah = Baruch 6.
As to whether it bans Christmas trees - well, from a Euro perspective, it bans the druidic rites first associated with those trees. But Christians don't worship those trees anymore as has already been mentioned. It'd be like banning altars just because altars vaguely resembling them had been used by pagans.

Belize and Costa Rica are both great places to visit, but before you go -- this is a picture of a common venomous snake in the area -- http://manbir-online.com/grafics3/fer-de-lance-2.jpg -- and here is another pic -- http://tinyurl.com/k4oocma -- and one more -- http://tinyurl.com/mav5wyf .
The fer-de-lance has a toxin very similar to a rattlesnake, so if you think of them as silent, well-camouflaged rattlesnakes that frequent leaf-litter, you're in the right ballpark. And tropical forests have a lot of leaf-litter. I'm not saying don't go or anything, I'm just suggesting that situational awareness and good stout boots might be in order.

I was actually wondering -- dishcloths, according to the version of English I learned growing up, are the same as dishtowels and are about 18" x 24", made from a thickish, but soft cloth. About as thick as denim, but nowhere near as stiff. I'd assume the basic cloth is usually made on a loom and finished with a serger. Note, however, that I said "version of English" -- the NYT dialect thing makes it very clear that we're not necessarily using the same one. What did your dishcloths end up looking like?
And I'm not getting the "hot for flannel" reference.

It lets you add another monitor to a system that otherwise wouldn't support it. Not fast enough for gaming but fine for most other purposes.
My brother does a lot of remote tech support using a company supplied laptop. It only allows a single external monitor, so he has three USB 3.0 video modules for a total of four monitors. This lets him work on multiple machines at a time rather than being idle while waiting on a particular machine to do something lengthy.

That's actually quite interesting.....and I like the comment "once you give one away and they find out that you can Scrub Glass with one". I've never seen one before. I use http://tinyurl.com/ldf97ul for that phase of dishwashing, and "dish cloths" for wiping dry -- but, then, I was pretty much raised by wolves.
Can't you at least pretend to go along with a sock? I mean, next you'll be saying I'm married to James Carville. Besides, if you did start sending me pics, there'd be a good chance the BH would body-check your ass into a reef.

Yeah, speaking of language differences....hash browns are shredded potatoes, fried flat so that they're cooked through in the middle, but the faces are browned. "Cubed potatoes" are when they're peeled, then cut into 3/8" cubes and fried. "Potatoes O'Brien" are cubed potatoes with similarly cubed onions and peppers. And "Country Potatoes" are random chunks of potato with the skin on, cut into chunks no bigger than 1" on a side, with bits of onions and peppers, fried with seasoning....and I keep going places where everything's normal except for ordering potatoes at breakfast.

Get off my f ing lawn. a dish cloth is a f ing towel cut to size. It will range from location or ancestry and even wealth (fancy, embroidered, flour sack or knitted). Yes it's cheap and ubiquitous now but50+ years ago making a dish cloth was a necessary skill.

And here, I was expecting a crumpled pile of flannel pj's.
I was serious about the question, though. I don't knit, myself, but I'm insatiably curious about the world around me and painfully aware that brushing teeth didn't start when Oral-B was incorporated and that people blew their noses before Kleenex. So I'm very curious to know if this was an active tradition in Gingy's home growing up, or whether she discovered it through knitting. Oh, and that's a very nice example -- I particularly like the zebra stripes, rowr!

That's another interesting cultural context -- 'cause "towel" resolves to "bath towel" which resolves to terrycloth; whereas "shop towel" is something quite different; and "dish towel" is more similar to a "shop towel" than a "bath towel". You're implying that a "dish cloth" is to a "dish towel" as a "washcloth" is to a "bath towel".

J.K. If I've gleaned enough here you and Gingy are leading a simple life by choice. But I am old enough (just barely) to have received gifts from people that lived through the depression. She just knits, it's what she likes to do. Her mother tried to teach her as a child but it didn't take, she really got into it after we married. (Oh God, I just realized that that means I'm less exciting than knitting). She spins roving into thread too. She sometimes dyes it, but not often. Hell, she even knows how to card raw wool, but that's a PITA and she usually buys wool already cleaned. I've said it as a joke often enough, but you really could send a sheep in our front door and a sweater would come out the back. She's my bargaining chip for when society breaks down completely, knowing how to actually make stuff from raw materials is our ticket into one of the compounds that will arise after society collapses. Sadly, I'm only half kidding.
Posted by: Weirddave at December 30, 2013 01:32 AM (N/cFh)
Relearning the basics is a good thing. I'm trying to get in touch with my inner machinist, lately, myself. And I'm still curious as to whether little dishrags like this were a fixture in Gingy's childhood home (or yours, for that matter -- it's just that I'd never heard of such a thing, and they make total sense for the 1940s kitchen).
But this brings on a total digression. We live in a subdivision where our block is a normal rectangular one, but the next one over is shaped kind-of-like a hand. If you take the sidewalk and do all the fingers, it's about a mile from our house to that block and once around and back. We can extend it a bit by doing the block to our north, which is shaped like a "U", and then looping back by way of our street continuing the other way into a U bend of it's own and changing names halfway. And so we frequently take walks around various permutations of the above....and we were talking about the BH's cousin and Kratos, who have both recently received PhDs in biotech-related subjects.
People have been predicting wonders from biotech for decades now, especially when they realized the overlap between biology and IT, but very damned little has come to pass -- and, so, the moron and the cuz are doin' post-doc sorts of things. And, thinking aloud, I said, "that's because nobody has demonstrated a direct link to cash, yet." Speculating further, I talked about needing an HP "GeneJet" printer, where you put in the sequence of bases and it outputs DNA. The thing is, this is very close to possible today and you just know it's going to happen.....so what does it mean?
Well, we're getting a preview of the first thing that will happen when you look at the 3D-printed guns story. The media and government will wet their pants and try to ban everything. Why? Well, how 'bout someone who pulls down the genetic sequence for smallpox and cultures it? What if that someone is as wack as the guy from Sandy Hill or the Dark Knight shooting in Aurora?
But how 'bout looking at it from the good side? What if you create DNA from a computer, buy suitable ova from the supply store, and making baby animals gets to be just one order of magnitude of effort greater than brewing beer? You print the DNA on your HP GeneJet, you get some compatible ova with DNA removed (and compatible mitochondria) from Amazon, you try some implants (tricky bit of work there) on a dozen or so and stick 'em in the Xerox cell replicator, and when you find one that "takes", it goes into the Breville Executive grow-out tank. Want a thylacine? Dial it up. Passenger pigeons become common in zoos. Extinction becomes entirely hypothetical.
But you won't see that happening in a hyper-regulated state.
