Why Is The United States The Greatest Thing In The History Of Ever?
You know, Canada's nice. Too nice, according to Canadians, but they're just being, well, too nice about the whole thing. They don't want you to feel bad about how nice they are. That wouldn't be nice. The British Isles are fairly pleasant. They have nuclear weapons, but I never get the impression they'd use them or anything. They're like the hood ornament on a Jaguar. It doesn't matter what's on the hood, because the car is always in the shop. I think Finnish people are nice, or would be, at least, if they would answer a question without staring at their shoes. Australians are a blast, of course. I think it's all the Foster's and everything being poisonous in their country that makes them so jolly. Why be glum if even the fuzzy, cute animals might drop you where you stand? The orchestra played at a 12 degee pitch on the Titanic, didn't it? Might as well; it's less work than panicking.
No, the US is not the greatest thing in the history of ever because we're all nice, or fun, or polite, or smart, or salubrious, or even interesting. We're the Greatest thing in the history of ever because we spent $25 billion just so we could do donuts on Old Man Moon's lawn.
The rest of our Federal budget? We wasted it.
Well the ability to deliver a physics package on a miscreant anywhere in the world within the hour is pretty awesome too.
And we recently achieved this even with no government funding. So we have that going for us.
The Problem With Camille Paglia
Actually, there is nothing in the WSJ article that indicates a leftist or even a liberal orientation on Paglia's part, although that vote for Obama would certainly suggest it. That is the puzzlement of the Obama appeal; how could someone like Paglia have ended up voting for him? There's a hint of the answer in this interview with Paglia from October of 2012. She didn't support Obama any more by 2012, but asked why she wasn't voting for Romney instead, this was her answer:
I cannot cast a vote for a party that cast so many votes in the primaries for the vile Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum! The Democrats may be naive about institutions and economics, but the Republicans seem to be culturally and psychologically naive in imagining for a single second that Newt Gingrich is a deep and erudite thinker!Did she consider Obama "a deep and erudite thinker"? And is that the proper criteria by which to elect a president, or is it more akin to the selection of a professorship in the academia Paglia has criticized so strongly?
Paglia goes on to add, "No, the Republican Party has become very provincial in terms of culture," in contrast to Nelson Rockefeller's abstract art collection; I kid you not. But that's Paglia for you.
I've always found Camille Paglia interesting yet ultimately frustrating as a writer since I started reading her essays in the 90s. She can seem very clear-headed and generally conservative yet this never seems to translate into a coherent world view and she consistently supports liberal democrats. So I eventually decided that a lot of her shtick is really just contrarianism mixed with emotion and clever writing. Which puts in the same for-entertainment-only-not-to-be-taken-seriously category as Peggy Noonan.
I'm Shocked, Shocked to Learn that Scientific Studies of Conservatives Can't Be Replicated
Concerned by the unreliability of scientific research in the field of psychology, an international group, the Many Labs Replication Project, began fact-checking major research. Of the thirteen studies it reviewed, only two were proven completely unreliable - and both had to do with conservative political behavior. Both studies concerned "social priming," a phenomenon by which people are made more likely to endorse a view or act in a particular way by first being exposed to certain stimuli.
...Scientific American, in telling this story, fails to note an irony which is not without its own scientific significance. The Project's review suggests a much-more-than-random failure of scientific studies that pertain to conservative views and beliefs. Scientists' inability to form sound theses in this area and to pursue their evidence with good methodology is a morsel that one interested in academic bias should not want to pass up.
BAE n. Spelling representation of a dialect pronunciation of babe or baby. The catchphrase "bae caught me slippin" (meaning, "My baby caught me sleeping") came into vogue as a caption to photographs taken by people pretending to be asleep.CIS adj. Identifying the gender that one was born to and identifies with, as in cismale for "male with male gender identity." Short for cisgender, an antonym of transgender. Pronounced as siss.
CRONUT n. A wonderful pastry that is part croissant, part doughnut and part hype.
DEEP STATE n. A hard-to-perceive level of government or super-control that exists regardless of elections and that may thwart popular movements or radical change. Some have said that Egypt is being manipulated by its deep state.
RESTING BITCH FACE, BITCHY RESTING FACE, BITCH FACE n. A face that, when at rest, looks angry, irritated or aggressive.
Also Words That Appeared The Year You Were Born
And China's Slow Motion Conquest. The Chinese campaign of conquering real, or imagined, nearby "lost territories" by winning many little victories in battles none of the victims is willing to go to war over continues. This campaign is quite active in the South China Sea, North Korea and along the Indian border. China has, in the last few years, taken control of sizable chunks of India and large swaths of the South China Sea one tiny piece at a time. The victims are organizing, but have yet to come up with a workable defense against the Chinese tactics. Despite growing resistance by the victims, and their ally the United States, China keeps pushing and keeps making progress. Nothing any of the victims has done so far has stopped the Chinese, who apparently believe that ultimate victory is theirs because their opponents are too disorganized or intimidated to put up any effective resistance. Nevertheless, it is a risky game and there are constant minor crises that could go awry and become major problems.

The ship graphic is vague. A gray ship silhouette is said to mean 'not deployable in the Pacific.' But what about USN carriers that are going through post deployment refit or even a refueling or SLEP? So the graphic is simple and wrong.

Her comments about Gingrich typically miss the point. His role on the right is not "deep and erudite thinker." It is "master tactician, master verbal fencer." He states the obvious in very clear terms, and is not intimidated by context or process, so he'll happily mix it up with people like debate moderators who are used to deference. We have strayed so far in the direction of ignoring obvious things (like "hey, we're spending much more money than we have, and it will collapse someday, and that day is not far off"), that it may seem to someone not paying attention that Newt is attempting to be erudite. He is not. He is trying to get across to your easily-distractable brain that this shit is real.

It does hurt. I try to repress the picture of the couch-with-Pelosi scene. The other part of Newt is "he has a flaky side where you never know what the hell he is going to do on impulse." If he didn't have that, he might have been President at some point.

Germany would more likely have won, at great cost to itself. But at least it wouldn't have been able to claim it had been stabbed in the back [by Jews]. So, no Hitler.
But Germany's victory would have been engineered by letting Lenin, Stalin and Trotsky gain control over Russia and sign a separate peace. Oh wait a minute. That actually happened! Germany *did* let Lenin take over Russia and sign a separate peace. With or without American involvement.
So, we probably still get Stalin in this counterfactual where the Americans let Kaiser Bill win.
The argument I'd rather have is whether *the Brits* should have told the Belgians, Frogs, Serbs and Russkies to go their own way when the Kaiser came calling.

These so-called rescue attempts were to rescue the ship, the meat bags on boat are purely secondary concern - per the ship's insurer, is it worth chartering an icebreaker to get the ship out? Once, yes, twice, ye, third no - cutting losses.

"The proposal of any new law or regulation of commerce which comes from this order, ought always to be listened to with great precaution, and ought never to be adopted till after having been long and carefully examined, not only with the most scrupulous, but with the most suspicious attention. It comes from an order or men, whose interest is never exactly the same with that of the public, who have generally an interest to deceive and even to oppress the public, and who accordingly have, upon many occasions, both deceived and oppressed it."

Woody Wilson being spanked in a foreign adventure? Oh my.
Note, Wilson's invasion of Russia on behalf of the "Whites" was also a folly. By that point, whoever took over Russia was going to do it upon a mountain of skulls. Kolchak and Denikin were, if anything, worse than Trotsky and equals to Stalin and Hitler.
If Wilson had fucked up twice that might have discredited liberalism forever.

They think it's cool. It's cheap.
What it is, is a legacy of Prohibition. In the immediate aftermath of Prohibition, only 3.2% beer was legal. But if you brew with only Barley Malt, you'll be at 5% or so. So they added other things, and that style, which some people came to like because it went down easy on a hot day, has persisted.

It's pretty straight forward and the Dems are focused and moving it along. So, what are the Republicans or the Tea Party prepared to do?

No, it wasn't over at all. Ludendorf expected to win up until shortly before the end of the war. The Germans most certainly would not have settled. And as has already been pointed out, Lenin probably still would have been installed, and from there we ineluctably get Stalin. (because I like saying ineluctably, that's why)
Wilson was an ass, but getting involved in the war was the right thing to do from an American interest pov.
No Arrogant TR, No Wilson, No Treaty of Versailles, No Weimar Republic, (Possibly no Stalin) No Hitler, No World War II, no Atomic Bomb, possibly no Communist China, and so on.
When you look at how close we came to utter catastrophe and losing that war, I'm astonished you think it was the worst possible outcome. Things turned out pretty damn well by world historical standards. The fact that you're posting your opinion on the intertubes confirms that.

The worst aspect was the involvement with anti-semitism. Although Jews had no bed of roses in the new soviet world, in central Europe Marxism was seen as a Jewish doctrine. Many Germans who happily shipped off their Jewish neighbors just thought of them as so many leftists, and on the grand scale, Jews as a group did not do a lot to oppose the misapprehension. Then again, things got late early.

That's one of the many wonderful things about the recipe -- it's extremely forgiving. You can make it to accompany anything that's in the oven at any reasonable temperature (300-425). Yes, they really did. Look, we can argue hypotheticals all night, but that fact is that the human race had reached the point where we could build things like nukes, and yet madmen like Hitler, Stalin, Mao, and Obama didn't get the chance to destroy the world because we and others stopped them in time. Again, the fact that we are here arguing about it openly is historically anomalous.

Oh, I understand OK. Carriers are mainly a means of projecting power at a distance, and that's not really Canada's bag, anyway. But if I were in charge of naval procurement, I would order a dozen or so nuclear-powered hunter-killer subs, and make sure they were suitable for long patrols under the Arctic ice. And some nuclear-powered icebreakers, even if we had to buy them from Russia. Look at a map to see why.
And a couple of boomers, with missiles to go with, because nothing projects power like a mushroom cloud on some middle-eastern pest-hole.

The invention of the atomic bomb was probably the one time history took a better turn, though not obviously for those who died at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. To any imbecile who wants to say: "Visualize a world without nuclear weapons" to me, I'd answer: "Here, let me strap you down and force you to watch the deaths of over 50 million people in World War II, all but those in the last week or so exclusively caused by conventional weapons."
At the rate this species was going by 1945, the invention of the A-bomb probably has saved a billion lives, including most of our grandfathers and great uncles and therefore most of us.

Side note, there were two major plagues in China in the first quarter of the century, either of which had the capacity to cut the population in half. Despite our conviction that only American missionaries worked there, there were Germans both protestant and catholic, and they had German chemistry backing them up. I think it's fair to say that German civilian involvement controlled those. A little piece of German do-goodery that gets washed away by all the other German things that were going on.

And that's the important difference. An atomic bomb could lay waste to a city or an army in seconds, where once it required months or years of preparation, tens or hundreds of thousands of men, supplies, ships, etc. It changed the calculus in war planners' minds. Absent the bombs, how many nations would be willing to gamble that they were too far away and just tough enough to win a fight against the US or some other power that got involved in their affairs?

Fosters was actually a decent drop back then and it seemed to benefit from being more commonly in cans, rather than stubbies, like most other brands at the time. It kind of dropped off during the 80's compared to the 70's, but it was not uncommon. Still on tap in a lot of places then. I think something happened in the brewing process, too. Used to be made with a lot of sugar or something. Dunno. But for awhile in the 70's qand early 80's it was the choice for drink quick- get drunk young reprobate crowd.

I ahve several thoughts wise, ranging from the "weaponization" of science for political purposes, grant funding, human nature, etc.
Maybe some day i'll get a chance to put all on this paper.

That would also explain the rampant level of fraudulent published papers (and theses). But I think it's something much deeper and more personal than bias confirmation -- I think it's the triumph of credentialism over achievement.

The novel Solaris by Stanislaw Lem is much better than the Soviet/Tarkovsky film, which in turn is much better than the Hollywood/Soderbegh movie that was based on the earlier film rather than directly on the novel.

It's absolutely amazing how much alternate history can be spun out of small changes in policymaking personages. Especially with reference to WWI, which was one of those enormous inflection points that led to many hugely important subsequent events.
Consider: WWI is never fought. Or, America stays out. Or, Germany emerges victorious. Or, the sealed train containing Lenin is never dispatched to the Finland Station. Or, the young Adolf Hitler succumbs to his combat injuries.

When I served in NATO forces in Germany, there were competitions among the forces, emphasizing infantry, armor and artillery.
The Canadian infantry were frequent winners in those competitions. The low-down on them was: physically tough, outdoorsy, and very resourceful (maintained effective operations when faced with lack of supply, adverse weather, or pretty much any other problem.) They would adapt and overcome challenges.
So, glad they're on our side (and we on theirs).

The academic world isn't just infiltrated by the left, it's owned lock, stock and barrel.
You see the same kind of behavior in the MFM and bureaucracies and it's bled into society at large - the inability to discuss coherently and calmly because it is impossible to challenge the premise - and that's critically devastating in science.
Well, it's devastating everywhere, but it's a "core competency failure" in science.
The more I look into it the more I see scientists have as much in common with used car salesmen as not. And that's very, very sad.

How does Bolshevism shake out if the galvanizing figure of Lenin is still in exile?
Does a communist clique still seize power under Trotsky, or Stalin, or one of the later-liquidated Old Bolshevik figures? Or does Russia end up for the long haul with a mild social-democratic government under Kerensky or some similar figure instead of going Communist at all?

University research was always owned, lock stock and barrel, by someone or other. For many of us, engineering was a trade school for a corporation, and physics was the triple-A for government space and weapons research...and we were fine with that. That's a bias. To universalize the concept of research bias, you have to look farther out and farther back than the one/two generations of the current line of bullshit, and recognize the other flavors.
The idea that university departments are even supposed to be the cutting edge of new projects is fairly recent, and, it irks me to say it, pretty damned statist. The great research labs were always part of a privately controlled institute, a business, or a wealthy amateur's estate, until this last century. Then the Germans built that weapons lab shaped like the Kaiser's hat, and the race was on. At this point, we still feel cozy with the notion because Moonshot, but our doubled-edged sword has turned on us hasn't it.
In engineering, there was an English school and a French school (of thought) in the 18th century. Franklin commented on the superiority of English experiment design, and the superior work habits of English researchers. West Point came down hard on one side of the scale, and the impact of its [engineering] graduates left a heavy mark on the profession in the US in the two generations in which it was the only game in town. In chemistry, well, duPont was a refugee from France, developed a gunpowder less susceptible to damp (in a blue state!), sold it all to our side, and there you go. About the time the Puritan establishment lost control of Harvard.

I have read about the Davy Crockett several times. It was a small missile that could be launched from a Jeep or other small vehicle. 15kt warhead, IIRC. Intended for things like stopping a column of tanks in the Fulda Gap. I saw criticism of it for reason that the crew firing it were within the blast radius of the warhead. Well, who would know better that an A-bomb was about to go off at point X than the guys who launched the damn thing? Push the button, then get your ass in a slit trench, or hunker down behind a rock wall or one of your own tanks, so you have shelter from the immediate blast and radiation flash. The fallout might get you. Or not. But you would remain an effective fighter for a few days, even if you were to absorb an ultimately lethal dose of fallout. Not so if you got a lethal does from direct exposure to radiation from the fireball.
Personally, I believe the biggest issue with miniaturized nuke weapons is that they made the idea of first use more palatable, and raised the specter of an ever-increasing nuclear exchange, back in the day when mutually-assured destruction was the mantra. But it seems to me that mini-nukes would be just dandy for dealing with rogue states with few or no nukes of their own, but otherwise well-armed and dangerous. Saddam Hussein, exhibit A.

In the 1700s average life expectancy was about 40. It was higher for the upper classes, but not a lot higher. So at 35 in the 1700s you'd be the equivalent of 50s/60s today.
Posted by: Mr. Moo Moo at December 31, 2013 12:09 AM (0LHZx)
That's a common misconception -- much of the life expectancy differential was focused pre-puberty. As an example, the individuals mentioned made it to 45, 66, and 49 -- but were felled by acute kidney failure, radiation sickness, and Aaron Burr, respectively. Their life expectancy otherwise wasn't all that different from today's once they hit adulthood.

I had always figured that if Hitler had refrained, Stalin would have waited for an opening and then attacked Germany.
Those suspicions were strengthened by the book _Icebreaker_, written by a Cold War era Soviet military intelligence defector. He averred that the USSR had been quietly gearing up to do just that when the Nazis preempted.

Point being that a nuclear bomb won't necessarily kill you within its blast radius if have something really, really solid to hide behind, or in. A deep trench would be ideal. The heat and radiation are strictly line of sight. The overpressure from the blast is not, but a trench will not collapse from that, unless it's ready to collapse at the slightest shake. A thick stone or concrete wall, or the mass of a tank should provide adequate shelter from the relatively small blast of a Davy Crockett device.
And what's to say you couldn't put the same warhead on a larger missile, with, say, a range of ten or twenty miles, or on a Predator drone?

The Royal Navy was very dependent upon ports for refueling. When Home Fleet and Force H cornered and sank Bismarck, Home Fleet with Rodney was almost out of fuel. If Ark Royal had not crippled the battleship, it would have escaped. Due to lack of fuel on the Britain's part.
For Pacific operations in 1944-45, the Royal Navy did create the fleet train needed for that expansive ocean.

I've been fortunate enough to spend a few of the hours of my life talking engineering with some of the people who designed and built Apollo-Saturn.
You could never manage to come up with a completely consistent cover story, to include unpredictable technical fuck-ups, to that level of immensely in depth detail. Sorry. It happened. Just as the history books relate it.
There are two things about which all of those old engineers are completely consistent.
The first is, for Pete's sake, we were just getting to where we were really GOOD at going to the Moon when the politicians pulled the plug on the program. Some amazing science opportunities were left on the table. And the boosters had been built for a few more moonshots.
The second is that sooner or later there would have been a crew lost in flight, simply because of the distances and dangers involved, and the lack of backups for certain flight functions. CSM engine won't fire for transearth injection after the returned LM is jettisoned? Crew die in lunar orbit. No possible rescue option.
And really, if you go back and read the deliberations, a big part of what motivated the politicians was fear of another Apollo 13 scenario, except without the possibility of crew survival. It would have been a huge national trauma at a time when there were already more than enough of those going on.
Sadly, America still has not figured out that (in the words of one wise sage), "Perfect safety is for people who don't have the balls to live in the real world."

Viktor Bout To Be Extradited By Auction
Alleged arms dealer to be sold to highest international bidder
BANGKOK (SFI) – The Foreign Ministry announced today a halt to the extradition proceedings of alleged Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout to the US. Instead, the former KGB agent and supposed inspiration for the film “Lord of War” will be extradited to the highest bidder in an attempt at fairness and transparency.
“The Russians lobbied hard to influence the original Criminal Court trial, which ended in their favor. Then the Americans lobbied hard to influence the appeals court decision, which they won. All this lobbying is hard for us to keep track of. So we think an outright auction is best,” said Sirisak Tiyaphan, director for international affairs at the Office of the Attorney General.
The process of deciding where to extradite Bout has caused chaos and gridlock among ThailandÂ’s competing government institutions, all of which want to extract some kind of gain from their piece of the process. As a result, competitive lack of co-operation has stalled the case, preventing anyone from being properly paid off.
“By auctioning him off publicly, and splitting the proceeds evenly between the courts, the police, and the Foreign Ministry, we can all come away happy,” said Chartchai Sutthiklom, director-general of the Corrections Department.
“Together we can,” he added.
The auction will be held at the Supreme Court next Monday at 9AM,with the bidding to begin at 100 million Baht. Main bidders expected to attend include the Russian government, the US State Department, Mossad, Congo president Joseph Kabila, and a consortium of Hollywood producers headed by Jerry Bruckheimer.

I've actually been reading this site and the old one for most of the ten years it's been up . I think I first found it and LGF at the same time using links from Drinking At Home which has sadly been defunct for many years. (I think I found Drinking At Home from Robert Spencer's site during my OMG we are all going to die any day phase when I worked for the Fed in DC).
All kidding aside this is without a doubt the best conservative site on the web. Hotair lacks the humor and really the intelligent commentary. LGF went full retard a long time ago. Most of the other blogs just can't produce content day in and day out that rates up there with AoSHQ. So thanks Ace for 10 years of hard work.

There never was. As Davy Crockett said during the debate about an award to Decatur's widow, Congress is not empowered to do that. The single greatest error in the Constitution is the failure to stipulate a penalty for Congress' violation of the restrictions therein, and if I were granted a "do-over", I'd be thinking hanging.

Hanging is too good for them. The Code of Hammurabi answer would be slavery. After all, that is essentially what they are doing to you every time they tax a part of your life away to pay for their popularity with someone else.

Wouldn't it be just delicious if every Supreme Court decision relating to a "Congress shall make no law...." clause [e.g. First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."] involved gallows? As in, "nope, that abridged the freedom of speech -- all you assholes that voted for it, queue up over there."
A couple of rounds of that, and we might even be governed as our Founding Fathers intended.

Despite it being a universal part of human culture around the world, I'd have to say that chattel slavery is probably inherently corrupting, and it would be a good thing if it were eradicated worldwide (which, note, it hasn't been). While it might be a fitting punishment, I can't see where the efforts of maintaining the logistics of the legal/operational support for it would be a good thing. Leaving violating legislators dangling around the periphery of the National Mall, by contrast, has a salutary effect on those in the Capitol and requires little maintenance.

HVAC unit replacement with salvage value = zero. Unit was never separately accounted and has been part of a 39 yr SL of the entire building (commercial not residential) for 9 years. The HVAC unit is a "structural component" based on IRS definitions.
Can one estimate the value of just the HVAC unit at the start of depreciation and figure the loss as the difference between the estimated value and the amount of accumulated depreciation (to be based on the estimated value over the period held calc'd by 39 SL)?

Since it's not separate from the building. And in fact is necessary for the building to have value as an occupied space. Like the plumbing and the heating etc.
Now I think you can write off the cost of the replacement HVAC as a business expense.
But that's just a guess and with the IRS even the fully informed are not.

There is an international cabal of Marxists -- heavily influenced by the Frankfurt School, but also encompassing Gramsci's "march through the institutions" [AKA, "take over the cheerleaders"], Critical Studies' "bitch about everything we don't run", Alinsky's "ruin everything we can't control", and Soros' "sell out to my profit just like I sold out fellow Jews to Nazis" -- who are all over the world hoping to loot everyone else. The oppressive Vietnam-supported regime are part of this group. The MSM is so thoroughly corrupted by this group that occasional breakouts of common sense are noteworthy.
Any questions?

What result are you looking for? On first impression, you're going to do a "repair" on the thing and expense that 100% in the current year, while continuing to depreciate the aggregate. Is there a desired outcome that is different? Are there facts and circumstances that would make this complicated?

OK, skimmed your link. *rolls eyes* 263A, again? I was on the front-lines of the original clusterfuck. After years -- and I mean YEARS -- of thrashing, the IRS said, "whatevs" and walked away....because the whole concept of changing capitalization to make the CBO score a bill better is nonsense.
So, here's the thing -- if you capitalize the new, you need to write-off the old; if you expense the new, you continue to depreciate the old. Start by looking at what you were doing -- if you replaced a $5000 half-depreciated fully-operational heating system with a $35,000 solar-powered intelligent individual-room-controlled comfort system, then why even try calling this a repair? If you swapped-out the cheapest thing you could for something that died, you're looking for cover to call this what it is.

I should be sleeping now. I (like many night-owls) have a pronounced skew toward "later". When I was in college, there was actually a period where I lived on 28-hour days where I slept 9 and did stuff for 19.....only problem is that there's only six in a week.
Getting older, you need less sleep, but it's going to be a pain in the tuchis to be up in six hours.

thing is -- it ain't enough money for a headache. Dollars wise the tax difference between the various approaches wouldn't be enough to pay the CPA to explain it. The whole thing is just silly.
It has been a component of a larger 39SL for 9 years. It had some book value and now it is gone with salvage = zero. Seems like a very definable loss.
The way I read it, there is no choice other than starting over with a new 39SL on the replacement unit. Which of course is bullshit because the lifespan is like 15-20 years tops.

The original UNICAP fiasco had everyone throwing up their hands. Here's the thing -- is it an upgrade or a repair? Common sense, throw it down.
Now the IRS is going to be sniffing around and second-guessing a certain percentage of things, but they have to deal with reality -- and if things are on another foot, they'll be trying to prove you wrong with the payoff of the difference in tax. I'm gathering that the difference in tax is minimal. Don't overanalyze, don't over-prep. Call it like you see it, document it that way, and move on.

If you're doing it for a client or employer, make sure to explain it in a way that can be retrieved. If you take an arguable tax position (side note -- see FIN 4
, civilians frequently freak-out at the first IRS communication. But if you have an email that says "facts are facts -- we had to repair this; if the IRS decides to portray it as an upgrade, our taxes could be off by $2000 but they'd be arguing that red was blue. Either way, we're better off not spending $3000 to find out." you should be golden.
Posted by: cthulhu at December 31, 2013 01:55 AM (T1005)
The deal is, you don't have to deal with a state's bullshit unless they can get a mitt on ya. So a Texas company doesn't have to collect South Dakota sales tax unless they have an employee there, own real estate there, or have a license there.
So, one time, I was managing a corporation in Silicon Valley, and we had a trade show in Texas, and those lousy bastards tried to assess property taxes on our booth because it was there during the assessment date in Texas.
Each and every state wants to use everything in their power to put you under their regime. The laws of nexus are going to be at the SCOTUS from now 'til Doomsday.

Really the only things unique to PBS that might be worth saving are:
Mclaughlin Group
Frontline
The American Experience
Sesame Street
Masterpiece/Mystery
Old BBC Comedies (Keeping Up Appearances, Faulty Towers and etc)
Red Green
Starting from the bottom:
Red Green - This was something I liked a decade ago. It's stupid but fun and I always liked it. I don't know if there is a market for it on cable though it sure beats Swamp Pawn Shop or whatever. Someone might pick it up but if they don't I wouldn't cry too much. I haven't checked Netflix/Hulu/Amazon but that would be a good place for it to land since it's a dead show.
Old BBC Comedies - See Red Green
Masterpiece/Mystery - Well A&E seems to think they are all artsy. They seem to prefer shows like Criminal Minds but maybe they'd actually like to play something that didn't involve the gory dismemberment of hookers. Now some people will point to Masterpiece/Mystery as a triumph of public broadcasting but I can match that with 2 great privately funded shows like The Wire or Breaking Bad. The only unique feature of Masterpiece/Mystery is that it's uniquely British just like the aforementioned shows are uniquely American.
Sesame Street - There are a dozen networks that would pick this up. The merchandizing is so big on Sesame Street that I can't imagine anyone passing it by; but if they did and if you've read Malcolm Gladwell's dissection of Sesame Street vs Blues Clues you know that the private sector surpassed the public in creating a show that actually teaches kids things. I personally can't think of a single thing I ever learned as a child from the show. Therefor: meh.
The American Experience: This can be one of the most unbiased shows on PBS. Their Reagan Biography was fantastic. I can't imagine the History Channel passing it up.
Frontline - There might be some bias in this one but overall I think it's a good show. 60 minutes has a bit of similar schtick though I think Frontline does a better job by focusing on a single topic. Again I think it would be picked up but if it wasn't ... meh. Like most of the world these days I get more out of doing my own research on the web.
They Mclaughlin Group - This one is a problem. There is no news network out there that wouldn't fuck this up. If Fox, CNN, or MSNBC picked it up they would tone down the bedlam because some viewers can't follow the 5 way free for all. In fact they would turn it into The Five. Now I like looking at Dana Pareno as much as the next guy but The Five is definitely sacharine compared to The Mclaughlin Group. I am pretty sure Elanor doesn't go to dinner with Pat after the show.
I think this show is like football for politics. I feel rage when Elanor Clift speaks her addled hippie mind or tells everyone else to let her speak after she interrupts the guest conservative for the 13th time. However, that is counterbalanced the joy of seeing Morty (or much less often Clarence) occasionally team up with Pat for a beat down when she crosses into utter stupidity.
Posted by: bestie21 at December 31, 2013 02:09 AM (AzO5R)
You don't have to -- here's the logical flaw: "if it's good for the country, it should be from the government".
Just chew on that for a bit. That's the underlying premise. "The land is fertile, it should be from the government"; "people are productive, it should be from the government", "there are valuable mineral deposits, it should be from the government." -- how stupid is that? But that's what they want you to buy into before you start talking specifics.

It's more than that. Every liberal argument starts with a bunch of hidden assumptions. For instance: "Wouldn't it be great if everything was free". Then when you talk about economics they say: "Let's set that aside for the moment."
So lately I just start off with "I deny the premise" and say what I think. :-)
