Well if you don't have anything better to do I guess you can hang out here. But if the cops come by, my story is gonna be that all you people are uninvited intruders who happened to bring along their own malt liquor kegs. And could probably use a good tasing.
Some of these people I've never even heard of which of course means they probably suck. Let the brawling begin.
The IRS Doubles Down on Critics
If you criticize IRS officials, you may be subject to all 501(c)(4) electoral and campaign regulations. And the IRS gets to decide if you're in violation and administer punishments.
Those rules restrict even truthful, nonpartisan criticism of IRS and bureaucratic wrongdoing by classifying it as "candidate-related political activity."
For example, if an IRS official subjects citizens to incredibly burdensome demands for irrelevant information just to harass them for their political or religious beliefs, no 501(c)(4) group could later criticize that official's nomination to be IRS commissioner, without engaging in restricted activity. That's because the IRS's proposed regulation defines even unelected government officials, like agency heads and judges, as "candidates" if they have been nominated for a position requiring Senate confirmation. The IRS's proposed rules are an attack on the First Amendment that will make it easier for the government to get away with harassing political dissenters and whistleblowers in the future.
Bastards.
The good part of Vine is that the videos are only 6 seconds long so they get right to the point.
A Gadget to Confuse Government Phone Tracking
How do you keep the government from using your phone's GPS to track you? Answer: Have a local GPS spoofer.
The Yosemite Box emits a GPS signal that gives the GPS coordinates of Yosemite National Park, maybe at the top of Half Dome. You simply keep the device near your cell phone when you do not wish to be tracked. If all cellphone metadata had the same address it would make the collection effort worthless. It would be low power so as to get under FCC regulations. Yosemite of course is just a random choice but a nice place for people to think you are visiting and besides you can say that you climbed Half Dome.
Note that this won't prevent tracking via which cell node your phone connects to.
Did I say "damn thing" about those wonderful solar panels? Yes, I did. I hate them. It turns out that the only way to realize a saving on them that's significant enough to offset their cost over a period of ten years is to use electricity only during "non-peak" hours, which are the hours when the sun doesn't shine. That means that, on weekdays during the seven spring and summer months of the year, I can't run the dishwasher, turn on the washing machine, use the dryer, or engage in any other significant electricity usage unless I want my energy bill to go through the roof.
The engineer in me likes the idea of solar panels but even with subsidies they only make financial sense if you sell excess electricity back to the electric company and adjust your lifestyle around non-peak hours. Still it's probably worth having a few portable solar panels (say 150W worth) so you can recharge battery packs, phones, etc. in the event of a disaster.
5 Authority Figures No One Realized Were Con Artists
Including the infamous human rights lawyer, Giovanni di Stefano, who wasn't.
He is perhaps the craziest lawyer to ever grace the inside of a courtroom, having gained notoriety for his willingness to take on impossible "crimes against humanity" cases that no other lawyer would touch. His clientele has earned him the nickname "The Devil's Advocate," and a whole bunch of friends in high (or, as it happens, low) places. In the 1990s, he used to own a soccer club with his close friend, the brutal Serbian warlord Arkan. He attempted to appeal for the serial killer Harold Shipman, and -- according to him -- even Saddam was on buddy terms with him.
So, yeah, he's the kind of guy who might be willing to fund his friends' genocide projects if they asked him nicely, but there's no denying he's also the type of lawyer that likes a challenge -- you have to be at the top of your game if you're going to defend the worst of the worst. Except, of course, for the teeny tiny fact that he's not a lawyer at all. Di Stefano never had any legal credentials whatsoever. He's just a random dude who read a few legal texts and started presenting himself as a professional.

The Unusual Origin Of Iconic Dungeons And Dragons Monsters
If you ever wondered where Gary Gygax came up with all the monsters in the original D&D Monster Manual, well here is part of the answer.
It turns out some of the most iconic monsters, like the Rust Monster and the Owlbear just to name a few, were based on a toy line made in Hong Kong and sold in discount stores back in the 1970s. Gary Gygax, the creator of D&D, picked up a bag of these funky little rubber monster figures and the rest is rpg history.
The World's Most Expensive Handbag
Such a deal at just $125,000.
A one-of-a-kind Hermes handbag, made of matte crocodile and Togo leather and featuring built-in feet, has sold for well over double its estimate at an exclusive auction in Texas to become the world's most valuable bag.The 'Geranium Porosus' bag is believed to have been made in 2010 as part of a Petit H Exhibition, a Hermes project in London at the time that gathered numerous rare materials and fabrics and had the world's best craftsmen create something with them.
The unique tote, which measures 32cm, would have originally retailed for about $60,000 and was expected to fetch about $50,000 at the Holiday Luxury Signature Auction in Dallas over the weekend.
However, an unknown buyer put down $125,000, and shot it straight to the history books.

Been a fun year in the comments though. Especially the book threads. And the NFL threads, for where I got to vent about how many yards of cock the Texans blew this season.
Here's to a better year ahead, plus to unhorsing some useless Colorado congressmen.

If Jimi Hendrix lived longer, he would be the Black Ted Nugent today.
Or, conversely, Ted Nugent would be the White Jimi Hendrix.
Disagree. But if Hendrix had not killed himself, and he were alive today, and there were a fundraiser to pay to teach him to hunt deer with a bow, I would chip in a few bucks.

As to the graph of performing artists, clearly done by some weenie who hates metal and needs redeeming social value. A music critic for some old dying daily paper, maybe?
Morrisey is a genius? I think that one who is easily parodied loses genius points.

Sure he was. "Genius" is not such a scary word; most think it means an all-around superior being, but really it means a kind of freak dedicated to one purpose, and able to carry it out beyond what others could do. Newton was socially incompetent, and possibly the greatest genius of all time (though Aristotle is a candidate). One definition I like is "an infinite capacity for taking pains." But I also like "one with clear perception of things that others do not see." Hendrix fits the first of these well, but is also a pretty good fit for the second. Try these definitions out against your favorite genius and see how it comes out.

I'm glad about your brother, Carol!
I too feel sort of sad when I see old New Year's party pictures. That pic was taken when America was on top of the world and every person in that photo knew it. They looked into the future and saw only bright days ahead.
I look into the future and pray we can somehow hit the brakes before it is too late.

Sure, but Rock n Roll is basically dead, outside of some very hardworking bands playing in small places, and bureaucracies never go out of business when they ought to.

I love rock music and the music of the '60's, but I hold off on applying the title genius to any pop music artist. I honestly don't know how long it will last after the last of the boomers are dead and gone. Gershwin has lasted the test of time - but how many listen to him nowadays? What about Stephen Foster, the most important 19th century American songwriter?
Popular music is of its' time and place. That makes it very powerful - but also guarantees that it will fade. I listen to "California Dreamin'" and I am immediately taken back to the summer of '67 (when I was a kid jumping through the sprinkler in the backyard and listening to it on our transistor radio). Does it mean anything at all to a 7 year old now? Or a 17 year old?
If the music of the Beatles and the Stones and Hendrix lasts as long and means as much to future generations as Bach does - well, then people will be talking about genius.

I'm not sure that's true about any of them. They all still did some good songs in the 70's, it's just that they didn't have the luxury of parsing down the sets and sticking the name "The Beatles" on the albums. If you drop the filler and drek from what they put out and just pick the best tracks from each of them, with one good Ringo song, you get what would have been a Beatle's album. The process wasn't so much writing together as the collusion on deciding what songs made the cut. That's where each member tended to reduce the excess of the others. The ratio of good songs declined after they broke up, the collaboration in the writing/recording stage did produce better results, but, they were still able to come up with a couple of truly great tracks each, for what would have been a yearly or once every 2 years LP.

Makes me suspect that this Hercules movie coming out might not be all that good.

I'm sorry to see this. My wife told me not to retire from the Navy because we might find out we really didn't like each other. I told her if that happened I'd get two jobs and we'd pretend like I was still in. Fortunately (for me anyway) this turned out not to be the case. Hard to believe she's been gone 3 and a half years now, I really miss her sometimes. I might have to find out if there is another redhead out there who'd put up with me one of these days.
But until then...it could be worse. You could be working. Like THIS GUY!!!

Minimun advice here Thunderb get to the riverside and get the next bus ticket to the toliet that is called Poipet in the NE or a mini-van to do a border crossing back into Thailand in the SE. ItÂ’s very simple. It is in the name of Philosophy, of Humanity, of Liberty and under the Reign of Reason that you will finish like thatÂ… Because, at this time, Reason will have its own temples, and the only temples in France, at this time, will be temples of ReasonÂ… You, Monsieur de Nicolai, will die on the scaffoldÂ… You, too, Monsieur Bailly, on the scaffold. ... I told you: you will then be governed only by Philosophy and Reason. Those who will treat you like that will all be philosophers; they will have in their mouths the phrases that you have been speaking for the last hour, and will repeat all of your maxims

"The night in Islington was sweet and fragrant.
"There were, of course, no Fuolornis Fire Dragons about in the alley, but if any had chanced by they might as well have sloped across the road for a pizza for they were not going to be needed.
"Had an emergency cropped up while they were still in the middle of their pizza with extra anchovies they could always have sent across a message to put Dire Straits on the stereo, which is now known to have much the same effect."

Posted by: MAx at December 31, 2013 09:25 PM (b7yum)
Yup. No one imitates Cobain, Prince and Davies anymore. Can't swing a cat by the tail without smacking a Hendrix or Miles imitator nowadays.
In other news, I'm drinking Firestone 17th Anniversary limited edition brew that my brother gave me for Christmas. Holy shit, that stuff is good.
'sup jackwagons. Happy New Queer.

735 Really really good to see ya Jake. I changed my nic 'cuz I've come to the conclusion that using the real name is just asking for it. Plus it has one less letter so I'm starting the new year with 25% greater efficiency.
I have so many AR's and pistols I haven't even fired yet I'm struggling to figure out what to put in the truck for tomorrow. In that sense it's been a pretty good year. And all that stocking up on ammo- how did that work out ya think?

Cato's Top Ten 2014 Predictions:
#1. More drugs and dumber drugs. The coolest new one of 2014 will turn you into a zombie, complete with the mindless hunger for the flesh of the living. If you took krokodil with it, you'll have the rotting to match!
#2. Democrats create a program to give $10,000 out of the treasury to everyone that registers Democrat. John Boehner refuses to oppose it and sabotages filibuster efforts.
#3. China makes a Statue of Totalitarianism in the same style as the Statue of Liberty, but bigger. Despite quality concerns, contaminated materials, and worker deaths, they finish it on schedule.
#4. Christian opposition to gay movement's demands that everyone "Bend & Spread 'Em" on command deemed a hate crime.
#5. Iran drops nuclear bomb on Tel Aviv. Obama Administration continues negotiating over nuclear enrichment, claiming to be near a resolution.
#6. Russia buys the state of Alaksa to be the future site of the Vladimir Putin Presidential Library.
#7. American withdrawl from Afghanistan accelerated due to new rules of engagement and pursuit by one angry local with a board with a nail in it.
#8. George Soros buys a desk in the Senate Chamber and a vote. New Senate rules amended to allow it retroactively.
#9. Obama super-scandal, giving every military secret in the entire country to every other country for one cent while snogging a Chinese spy on the oval office desk on live TV. Democrats say there isn't enough to prosecute.
#10. Obama Administration apology tour ends up in England due to a weather-induced layover. Accidentally habitually apologizes to the Queen. Queen accepts apology with return of stolen property, namely the entire US. US celebrates.

The Democrats and their scandals will present a golden opportunity for the Republicans to take Congress.
The Republicans, led by Boehner, McConnell and Rove, will turn this golden opportunity into a total blowout for the GOP, and the Democrats will retain the Senate, take back the house, and generally run everything.
Hillary! will sail to victory in 2016. Again, thanks to Boehner, McConnell and Rove.

Merry Fucking New Year,
Happy Fucking Winter Day!
St. Sylvester's Watching,
But for me it's Hogmanay!
St. Basil is anything but Solemn for The Mary,
His Epiphany was always about The Pray!
Lupercalia is coming,
It's my favorite way to say,
Merry Fucking News Years
And Happy Fucking Winter Day!

"I got this router's big brother, the EA4500, and there is a huge weirdism about that router that is completely undocumented and likely shared with this one.
For some quick intro -- web addresses (like www.woot.com) are translated by DNS's into IP4 addresses (like 123.111.222.1). Information travels over the internet by being chopped up into packets, which have IP4 addresses.
A router is a device that looks at a packet with an IP address on one network, and says "that's one of mine" -- then passes it into a different network with a different target IP address (likely one it assigned by being the DHCP server).
How this works in real life is your router wakes up and asks the internet: "where am I?" The internet responds, "you are 123.111.222.1" and the router happily says, "bring on the stuff for 123.111.222.1". Then a computer wakes up and asks the router: "where am I?" and the router responds, "you are 192.168.1.100".
So when your computer wants a webpage, it says, "please send it to 192.168.1.100" and the router changes this to "please send it to 100 at 123.111.222.1". The web server responds "here's some traffic for 100 at 123.111.222.1" and your router changes this to "here's some traffic for 192.168.1.100" on your local net. It sounds very complicated, but it goes on all the time and very quickly.
By tradition, basic routers actually do hand out IP addresses starting with 192.168.1.100, and the routers, themselves, are 192.168.1.1 on their own network. This allows you to connect legacy equipment -- stuff that checks dipswitches for "where am I?" instead of just asking -- by giving it addresses like 192.168.1.50 -- it'll get recognized, 'cause it's in 192.168.1.XXX, but other devices won't bump into it because it's under 100.
OK, so here's the weirdism -- if the router wakes up and goes, "where am I?" and the upstream router says, "you are at 192.168.1.XXX", then the Linksys router goes -- "ooh, scary, that's what I was going to say!" -- and when other computers on its network start asking where they are, it uses three COMPLETELY RANDOM numbers for its first three segments -- so the first in-network computer might well be 252.17.197.100 -- instead of the 192.168.1.100 that it would have been traditionally.
And that means that your legacy devices -- the 192.168.1.50 gizmo -- completely disappears to all the other computers in your network....'cause it ain't in 252.17.197.XXX land.
The only way to deal with this is through reset to factory defaults -- it cannot be configured through local or web config and survives normal reboots and resets. You're permanently exiled to 252.17.197.XXX.
Other than that, and a tendency to "hang-up" on hibernating computers and re-use their IP addresses, I really like the EA4500, but I would seriously hope that anyone buying an EA series router knows about this quirk in advance."
I blame the NSA.

I, myself, am really glad to put 2013 behind me. I personally didn't have much in the way of catastrophes, but it just was a horrible dispiriting mess throughout. With many of the same bunch of clowns in power -- and, you'll note, I did not say "governing" -- we're going to get more crap in 2014, but each and every day holds the possibility of "knock that shit off" -- and our recovery and success will begin when that happens.
Someone made a great observation with regard to "what is the GOP alternative to Obamacare?" -- if your house is on fire, do you ask the firemen "what is your alternative to this conflagration?" We can do repairs or rethinks once the fire is out and we can see how much was burned.
That said, I'm wary of what is to come in 2014 -- and frankly expect much more of the bad than the good -- but hope that we turn the corner on failed policies from the 30's, move away from our wretched socialist slum, and pursue again our vision of a shining city upon a hill. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=332QeTNmfh8

=====
long story and I am not ready to tell it yet.
We've had a pretty good winter but I am not getting any chances to get out in it. The downhill skiers have had a big win -- the flatlands got over a foot of nice powder so the mountains had to get 3-6 feet.

My former, pasty, Spartan demi-god master was mentioned and I was stirred to post.
I'll go back to pulsating blue in solitude now, until, one day, maybe I'm called back to service.

Serious question.
A "public house" is a pub, right? Isn't tht exactly what Toby is singing about in that song.?
And basically what the HQ is?
We've got winners
We've got losers
Chain smokers and boozers
We've got yuppies
We've got bikers....

The ambiance is quite different. In the UK, the limiting factor is "house" -- most Brits live in shrunken digs that are positively claustrophobic. In the US, the limiting factor is "booze" or "socializing", because you typically have more room at home than you do in a bar.

Have to look in the United Cobloggers and Parking Attendants' Local 217 Rulebook to see if they get today off, or just get time-and-a-half for posting.
Seeing a local teevee stations' "year in review" during last night's evening news was enough to close off any attempts at Holiday Cheer: the rapidly improving economy is having a great effect on housing prices (up! up! up!), John F'n Kerry gave us Peace With Iran!, and Mumbles Menino is being replaced by someone who is actually worse (but maybe, if we're reeeeeeal lucky, not as awful as Bill DeBlasio). We got the bestest, most wonderful health care system in the world, too, thanks to Choom Boy! Oh, and don't forget all that "Boston Strong" crap....

I live about 30 miles NE of Bahstahn, Carol, on a sort-of-island at the end of Route 128.

There may be some truth to that.
My e-mail addy is yahoo based anyhow.
So I would have used it no matter what.
And if one was required, by default I would have had the correct account.
In other words...I may have done it the right way....by accident..
