The Family from the Carol Burnett Show

So I've been on a kick of watching old Carol Burnett episodes especially the classic Family skits. Some of these I haven't seen since they originally aired and I was pleased to see that they're still as funny and timeless as I vaguely remembered. (Mama's Birthday and Forgive Your Enemies are classics)

Of course I see a lot of Eunice, Mama and Ed in my own extended family (I suspect I'm not alone in this which is what made them so appealing) and watched many a family holiday start out with high hopes and a veneer of good cheer and joviality while the tension and periodic squabbling slowly built until you just knew a Scene was about to erupt. Entertaining as long you're not involved and just accept Christmas screaming matches and reconciliation as another family holiday tradition. Good times, good times. Norman Rockwell they weren't but that doesn't mean that they don't love each other (mostly) and aren't a real family.

Another thing I noticed is that the skits are rather long by today's standards. Some are as short as 10 minutes but most run around 20 minutes or more which allows for a good amount of build-up and character development. After watching a few I've realized that they were essentially written as short one act comedy plays with recurring characters (as well as an underlying layer of pathos).

You can watch practically the entire collection here.

Tough Times For the Treacher

Some guy named Josh did this to me tonight, because he thought I was rude when he tried to run me over. http://t.co/j2zVnrwYb1

- Jim Treacher (@jtLOL) December 04, 2013

I think the sooner he gets back to Indiana the better his life will be. And despite the various kerfuffles here the Morons wish him well. There are people who are willing to help him - if he'll let them.

'12 Years A Slave' Is Making People Crazy

The award for craziest response to 12 Years a Slave has to go to Jonathan Chait, however. Chait claims** to have been so emotionally devastated that he laid in bed unable to sleep for five hours, tossing and turning and tearing up the sheets even though he saw a morning matinee and didn't go to bed until 10 hours later. Indeed, the movie so deeply and profoundly affected Chait that it reminded him that all conservatives are engaging in racist tropes every time they criticize the president.

Granted, it doesn't take much to make Chait think that conservatives are super-terrible race-baiting bad guys. For instance, did you know that Republicans who seized on Obama's "you didn't build that" gaffe were engaging in a racist assault on the president? Don't worry, Chait was all over it. Dog whistles and such.

Munchausen Identity by Proxy

An identity defined in terms of victimhood needs fresh injections of oppression to sustain its existence. Those African-Americans who define "blackness" not in terms of positive values but in terms of negative values, need white racism, the real thing or the fake one, to remind them of who they are. And the same holds true for other minorities who define themselves not by their culture or values, but by their resentments.

The left's need for victimisation means that increasing levels of tolerance actually lead to escalating confrontations with these manufacturers of intolerance. The assertion that all white people are innately racist because of their privilege is one such response to increasing tolerance. By claiming that whiteness itself is racist, the left gets back to political identity, rather than actual discrimination, as the source of conflict, and redefines even the most tolerant university multicultural spaces as racist.

The manufacturers of intolerance, whether they're tenured academics like Ward Churchill, professional politicians like Barack Obama or angry waitresses like Dayna Morales, respond to tolerance with provocations. Their goal is to elicit evidence of intolerance to sustain their political identity. The more tolerance they encounter, the more they escalate their provocations. Their goal is not a tolerant society. It's not a multiracial society or a post-racial society. It is a society perpetually at war over identity politics. That conflict is what gives them power.

Is the Government Manipulating the No Fly List To Keep People From Testifying in Court and Then Lying About It?

It sure seems that way. The fact that there's no due process of any sort with the no-fly list has always bothered me.

How to Sell Hockey Tickets in Russia

Hockey is as Russian as gulags and alcoholism. So who would've thought the Magnitogorsk Magnitogorsk of the Kontinental Hockey League would need grassroots marketing to sell out a home stand for a team that is 18-7 and third in its division?

Mostly SFW I think.

Space Suits and the Picard Maneuver

We moved on to wool gabardine. When you're doing heroes, when you want the characters to look heroic, there are certain things that you must do to make them seem that way - Broader shoulder, narrow of hip, as vertical as possible, chest out, ready to go after evil. As well as being more comfortable for the actors, changing the uniform to a shirt and pants combo, rather than a jumpsuit, meant that Patrick Stewart's shirt almost constantly rode up, thus creating the iconic Picard Maneuver. 12 School Uses Biased Worksheet to Politically Nudge 6th Graders The public schools are becoming increasingly more politicized. They are used to teach obedience to the collective, the evisceration of the Bill of Rights, the fight for “social justice,” and even how to inform on their parents political views to the state. Yet another example of the state “nudging” vulnerable kids to think correctly and help transform society has been uncovered. The assignment presents various either/or political questions and labels them “Democrat” or “Republican.” The problem lies in how those differences are expressed. 24 U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren pledged today she will not run for president in 2016 and when pressed added she will finish her six-year term.

The Bay State senior senator has been mentioned in the preliminary talk about the presidential race, but fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton has generated the most buzz.

"I'm not running for president and I plan to serve out my term," Warren said at a press conference in Boston with Mayor-elect Martin J. Walsh.

When peppered about her intentions, she added: "I pledge to serve out my term.

"I am not running for president. I am working as hard as I can to be the best possible senator I can be," she said. "I am working as hard as I can to be the best the possible senator that I can be and to fight for the things that I promised during my campaign that I would fight for. I am fighting for bank accountability. I am fighting hard to help rebuild AmericaÂ’s middle class."

When asked if she sees a clash looming between Hillary Clinton's centrist wing of the party vs her liberal branch, Warren dodged any mention of the former U.S. Secretary of State.

Yep Maetenloch, those were great sketches. IMHO however, and if you looked at them a certain way, they were as sad as they were funny. The writing was just deep enough to make it seem that Eunice never felt loved or appreciated, and Mama was constantly getting criticized.

74 When I was a kid in the late '80s, a local station played reruns of the Carol  Burnett show at 9pm. I watched it every night and always loved it. I really would like to watch them all again since so many skits were spoofs of old movies that I hadn't seen yet but would enjoy on a new level now that I have. Heck, my first exposure to "Gone with the Wind" (Korman is such a handsome "Rhett"), "Mildred Pierce", "Sunset Boulevard", and "Double Indemnity" were all on this show, lol.

My fave moments were of course when Conway would crack up Korman. Conway's "old man", short golfer, and Mr. Tudball were the funniest. I thought Lyle Waggoner was very dreamy. Steve Lawrence was awesome, too... good looking and funny impersonating Cagney.

Oh, and it's nice to know Conway is a Christian and I'm guessing a conservative since he's been on Huckabee.

78 60 Q: Anyone else have the urge to punch Wil Wheaton? A: For a very long time. He's a real douche. You said it brother!!!!!1! Posted by: Dr. Sheldon Cooper at December 04, 2013 10:59 PM (T/XcG) I totally mean it when I say he's a douche. I remember an episode of Weakest Link when they had Star Trek cast as contestants. Wil Wheaton and Roxanne Biggs-Dawson (B'lanna Torres from Voyager) were on it. Wil spent most of the episode mouthing off to everyone in his douchey way, and made a near borderline sexual remark about RBD on air. Later on when they interview the contestants who were cut, she said that he was extremely rude and said all sorts of inappropriate things off camera during the filming. No one liked him.

Have a friend in his early 30's. We were talking about his reading assignments and film screenings for english when he went to school. He bitched about the crap they pushed on students. They were flavour of the month books and films with "a message", that changed from from year to year. When I told him that I got reading assignments on stuff like "1984" and "Lord of The flies", he asked...

"What's 1984?"

I thought he was shitting me. I said that there's no fucking way you could go through high school, without 1984 getting referenced in one subject, or another. "It was never mentioned", he told me. I knew schools were getting bad... but, holy shit, they never even mentioned Orwell... ever.

171 Several weeks ago my phone, which at the time had FB on it (which I haven't used for months and months), popped up a couple of messaging alerts that I didn't recognize. Can't recall the specifics, but it sounded like it was some sort of FB messaging thing. So I deleted FB from my phone. I hate this police state shit. As for Treacher, obviously that incident is terrible. But I have to say, he has a very odd demeanor on Twitter and the stuff here was not to his credit. Don't know if it's because of his time in DC or what, but he's block-happy on Twitter and just plain argumentative. Blocked me for honestly no reason except I guess he didn't know how to say "hey, let's agree to disagree." I wasn't even arguing with him, just trying to ascertain his view on something or other which I've since forgotten. I think he's got issues. Perhaps impatient people pick up on those and if those people are inclined to violence they react accordingly. He sure has a lot of bad luck.

209 In the context of why some cultures (specifically Anglo-Saxon) have been sucessful while others tend to create banana republics.
The key thing, I believe, is a culture that has “maturity”, basically self-restraint. That was clearly demonstraited in English culture in the English Revolution (also the first American revolution, and a precurser to the 1775 American Revolution.

In order for rule of law to work, you need a culture of virtue, one where people follow the rule of law because that is what is done, even if they donÂ’t agree with the results.

Banana republics result from people not following the rule of law, but doing what benifits them or what they think is best.

It requires a POTUS who follows the rule of law, and a population (including his supporters) who insist he does.

The fundamental problem is that no constitution enforces its provisions. El presidente or the party in power can always violate any written rule of law if willing and sufficient people are willing to look the other way.

It reallly comes down to culture, not the specific set of rules involved. ObamaÂ’s Democratic party is the banana republic party.

The mayor hates you, the council members hate you, the cops hate you, the firemen hate you. The average person doesn't do well in that scenario, let alone someone prone to anger, depression, or self-pity. Jonah Goldberg seems the type who honestly is unfazed by all the hatred he gets. Ronstadt can sing, but she said some hateful things about conservatives & Christians during the Bush years:

'On the issue of the ongoing battle in Iraq, Ronstadt added, "I worry that some people are entertained by the idea of this war. They don't know anything about the Iraqis, but they're angry and frustrated in their own lives. It's like Germany, before Hitler took over. The economy was bad and people felt kicked around. They looked for a scapegoat. Now we've got a new bunch of Hitlers."

"This is an election year, and I think we're in desperate trouble and it's time for people to speak up and not pipe down. It's a real conflict for me when I go to a concert and find out somebody in the audience is a Republican or fundamental Christian. It can cloud my enjoyment. I'd rather not know."'

In our old work building, we had these smartassed little fucking ninja mice that would eat the peanut butter off of the mousetrap triggers. Cleaned 'em right up and left the trap untripped. After several weeks of feeding the damned things, I made up a long, narrow cardboard box and set TWO traps in the thing, with the baited trap deeper inside so the mouse had to climb over the first trap to get the goodies.

Nabbed one of the little bastards first time out with that trick. Had a really odd, surprised look on his face lying under the trap bail. Within a week, we were mouse free.

300 Two weeks ago, the liberal Center for Media and Democracy kicked off a national campaign to reveal the identities of anonymous contributors to conservative groups in an effort to unseat the GOP governor here.

Now the group may have to answer embarrassing questions about its own finances.

A Watchdog.org review of financial documents reveals the Madison-based CMD, which bills itself as a journalism organization, received $520,000 in 2011 from the Schwab Charitable Fund. ThatÂ’s 60 percent of the $864,740 CMD received that year.

CMD lists no donors on its tax returns, but its website identifies numerous financial backers without any financial data. Several are highlighted in bold and labeled “current donors.” But one important name is missing: Schwab.

Schwab is a so-called donor-advised fund -- a financial institution that manages contributions to nonprofits so that donors remain anonymous. Such donor-advised funds are legal. Like many nonprofits, Watchdog.orgÂ’s parent, the Franklin Center for Government and Public Integrity, uses one, too.

But CMD and allied organizations have worked feverishly to suggest the practice is shady — and limited to conservatives. As recently as Monday, CMD attacked the practice on its own website.

The Skyfall theme is the only one of hers I have heard that I know is hers; and that works because she does not have the 'squeaky let me crack it on the high note' thing, and the song sounds like a Bond song - like the 'Goldfinger' theme.

Yup.  They're cute.  and fuzzy.

But they must die.

I have parrots, and huge cages for them (like 7' x 5') and those little mousey sonsa crawl UP the cage and shit in the parrots' food.

Last year we had a family of owls in a nearby tree.  Kept the lot clean, pretty much.  This year it's golden eagles and they tend toward the bunnies more than the mice so I'm on my own.

310 The National Security Agency is reportedly collecting almost 5 billion cell phone records a day under a program that monitors and analyses highly personal data about the precise whereabouts of individuals, wherever they travel in the world.

Details of the giant database of location-tracking information, and the sophisticated ways in which the NSA uses the data to establish relationships between people, have been revealed by the Washington Post, which cited documents supplied by whistleblower Edward Snowden and intelligence officials.

Orkin wanted $700 for an annual contract.

Next two pest control folks didn't do rodents.

Last one was local and sounded good, and I made an appointment. But after talking to all four I discovered that what they do is first determine where the little buggers are getting in (1/4" is all a mouse needs). Plugging the holes with steel wool, or bigger (aluminum foil works).

Then killing the little mothertruckers that are stuck inside.

We did the 'live trap' thing where you get a gravity trap and put some peanut butter at one end, they walk in and get trapped.

Problem was we had like 20 of them set around the house on every corner and who checks 20 mousetraps a day, every day?  I don't.  And so they die a horrible death of dehydration.  Not a fan of that.

So now we go chemical and just poison the shit out of them.  So far so good; two years running and we've got like 6 dead mices a year.  Guess word got out.

And I probably shouldn't include WSJ. Breitbart and Daily Caller have also been growing nicely. Breitbart is #1,005 now. Daily Caller is #1,895 Breitbart jumped ahead of NewsMax for #4 in the right-o-sphere. I don't know anybody who reads NewsMax and nobody I read ever even links to it. But somebody is reading it. I think it skews much older, but not sure. Heritage has moved up hugely in traffic. Went from around #20k to #10k in the last year or so. Althouse has plummeted. She lost 30k spots in the last several months. Hotair seems pretty stagnant. Blaze, Breitbart, and Daily Caller seem like the new pretty girls getting a lot of attention.

384 Mice appear to dislike even the smell of cats. My parents very occasionally have mouse problems in their home (notably, once in the attic and once in their outdoor storage closets - the latter all connected above the shelving). The cat was let loose in the "infected" area, and disappeared for a few hours. No mouse bodies were ever left on the back doorstep (i.e. where all of the dead birds and lizards typically end up), but no evidence of the mice in question was ever seen or heard again.

392 Happy Days was the big TV show when I was growing up. But then TV was  never anything important. I just didn't watch a lot of TV as a kid.

What I did was hang with my gang of friends and play games. When we weren't riding our bikes we were playing one of the following:

Hockey- either in the street or on roller-skates in our basements.

Basketball- there were two parks with hoops we could walk to.

Baseball- in the park with  tennis balls, only after overly-sensitive neighbors complained about broken windows and dented aluminum siding. Oh and then there was whiffle-ball  in our driveways

Football- and then there was football. From sun up to sun down. Full on tackle football.

Now I am pretty much *on-line* all the time. I cant imagine how these kids today, who are growing up in the internet age are dealing with their reality.

If I recall correctly, when I was a kid we played football from the time we left school until we were late for dinner.

Full contact with all the force and momentum an 80lb kid could bring to a tackle.  On grass and sometimes concrete.

And on the off days we'd play basketball (also full contact) or baseball (fast pitch... Ts are for pussies).

Seems we all got through it just fine.

448 cthulhu, WKRP was I think one of the first attempts to make an actual "hip" sitcom. And it didn't hurt that the producers actually hired some young, fresh writers.

It worked wonderfully. Just wish the ratings had been better, as it was gone within three years of its premiere unfortunately.

457 That's the weirdest thing about humor, or art, or tunes.  You can agree with someone all night about something and then they say something that completely "puts you off".  :/

...You liked that?!?

I've seen solemn individuals laugh at the stupidest shit.  I've seen simpletons "get something", when I "missed it".  The dour like the silly, the rambunctious like the dead-pan, the oddballs who swear by the conservative humor.

I can tell you this much:

-A bar full of people Will Not Laugh at Late-Nite Comedians' Jokes.

I've ripped them off as "filler".  It is personality that sells.  ...period.

Only us old dogs who actually worked on mustangs and watched them catch fire in the barn (yup) even notice.  And now we're old so we want leather and updated goodies.

If we want retro we go find an old 'stang and restore it.  Don't bring old shit to a new game.

The fundamental error of the governing class -- the "original sin", as it were -- is to think that better decisions are made by people who have "no skin in the game" -- whether by virtue of their superior intellect, superior education, remove from the tawdry details, or whatever. They all want to put taxpayer money where their mouth is, while making bank and keeping it.

And those global warming assholes are among the worst. I well remember the "Coming Ice Age" alarms being rung in the 70s, and here these same clods come back to the trough singing "global warming" in the 90s and expect us to be so stupid as to not remember when they said the exact opposite. Now the "hockey stick" is busted, we're looking at a possible Maunder minimum, and the ink is barely dry on the last batch of lies.....whaddaya wanna bet they'll start agitating about cooling again?

525 ....and a weatherstation close to us is showing 30.7 degrees. Brrrrr....

As an aside, this house was built in 1955 as a rectangle with an attached garage, forming an L -- and probably had zero insulation. In the 80's, the garage was converted to a family room and gained fiberglass insulation all around. The rectangle was extended about 6' farther on the non-garage side, and that extension was insulated. A new garage was built on the other side from the old garage, making the house into a U. Some idiot used blow-in insulation in the attic.

Then we bought the place. We removed all the blown-in attic crap and laid down fiberglass batts, and also put in fiberglass under the floor. We remodeled the kitchen in 2004, which was at the bottom inside of the U, and insulated that. In addition, the wall that was originally the long wall of the L that was 1/2 originally garage got insulated because it was paneling over studs (no drywall, no insulation) and you couldn't even hang a picture on it without tearing a hole.

So attic and crawl are insulated, but from the front door [bottom of the U] you have: 1' 1955 nothing; 6' 2004 insulated (turn); 25' 1986 insulated (turn); 20' 1986 insulated [end of one side of U]; 20' 1986 insulated; 6' 1955 nothing; 24' 2002 insulated (turn); 50' 1955 nothing; 6' 1986 insulated (turn); 25' 1986 insulated (turn) 6' 1986 insulated [cutting into the house to skip the new garage]; 29' of "I have no clue".

Reason I bring this up is that I was in a discussion group about energy efficiency consultants who would evaluate your home and tell you what parts weren't designed right and nearly busted a gut laughing.....and, when invited to "share the joke", got nearly all the participants either boggling or laughing outright. The only reason that I was such a radical is because I'd been behind the wallboard so many times and actually knew what was there -- most people will look at a 1955 house with a 2012 paint job and assume that the guts are 2012.

Then we bought the place

534 "And those global warming assholes are among the worst. I well remember the "Coming Ice Age" alarms being rung in the 70s, and here these same clods come back to the trough singing "global warming" in the 90s and expect us to be so stupid as to not remember when they said the exact opposite. Now the "hockey stick" is busted, we're looking at a possible Maunder minimum, and the ink is barely dry on the last batch of lies.....whaddaya wanna bet they'll start agitating about cooling again?"

No doubt and the funny thing is the solution will be the same: "give us more control over your lives and hand over more of your money."

Yeah. Funny how that always stays the same. How 'bout we start with "you predict something that doesn't happen, you live in a refrigerator box under an overpass" and see how that works out?

It's only 16 degrees C in Sydney, 9C in Canberra at the moment. It's well into summer and approaching mid summer now...

547 I'm going to die, falling off the roof, hanging Christmas lights. I'll be wearing thermal undergarments, layers, a Cleveland Indians hat and a black hoodie. I'm fairly sure my middle-finger will be extended and my teeth will have been brushed. Posted by: Slapweasel Hung the porch lights today, but refused to go on the wet porch roof and hang the star. We will get by w/out it this year. Since my Dad fell off his roof a few years ago the wife seems to be amenable to letting this pass. I'm too old for a broken arm and she apparently doesn't fancy a trip to the ER. Yeah, the joys of getting older. The porch lights look good. We will have a Merry Christmas w/out the star or me falling off the roof!

550 I remember the Eunice episode of her going on the Gong show.  I always thought the ending was kind of sad because she immediately gets gonged and that's the end of the skit, if I remember, with no laughter and only showing Eunice face as it faded to black, end of skit.
