Army Lt. Col. Doesn't Understand the Second Amendment, Constitution
Hoo boy this one just gives me a headache. Lt. Col Robert Bateman published an essay in Esquire in which he calls for complete gun control and ends up showing how unclear he is on the 2A and the Constitution in general.
Now Lt. Col. Bateman qualified as Airborne and a Ranger and is a military historian having written several books and taught at West Point. So he's not a nobody without any cred. Yet like so many others he gets hung up on the initial clause of the Second Amendment ("A well Regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state.") and pretty much runs off the rails after that.
Fundamentally he doesn't accept the Supreme Court's Heller decision at all. His counter-argument: Well he just knows better and they're all wrong. For him the militia = the National Guard and therefore civilians have no right to own firearms.
Oh and if he were king, he has a few modest royal pronouncements in mind:
1. The only guns permitted will be the following:
- a. Smoothbore or Rifled muzzle-loading blackpowder muskets. No 7-11 in history has ever been held up with one of these.
- b. Double-barrel breech-loading shotguns. Hunting with these is valid.
- c. Bolt-action rifles with a magazine capacity no greater than five rounds. Like I said, hunting is valid. But if you cannot bring down a defenseless deer in under five rounds, then you have no fking reason to be holding a killing tool in the first place.
[See King Bateman is indeed a merciful and generous liege allowing people like yourselves to own something that goes bang - M.]
2. We will pry your gun from your cold, dead, fingers. That is because I am willing to wait until you die, hopefully of natural causes. Guns, except for the three approved categories, cannot be inherited. When you die your weapons must be turned into the local police department, which will then destroy them. (Weapons of historical significance will be de-milled, but may be preserved.)
3. Police departments are no longer allowed to sell or auction weapons used in crimes after the cases have been closed. (That will piss off some cops, since they really need this money. But you know what they need more? Less violence and death. By continuing the process of weapon recirculation, they are only making their jobs -- or the jobs of some other cops -- harder.)
4. We will submit a new tax on ammunition. In the first two years it will be 400 percent of the current retail cost of that type of ammunition. (Exemptions for the ammo used by the approved weapons.) Thereafter it will increase by 20 percent per year.
5. We will initiate a nationwide "buy-back" program, effective immediately, with the payouts coming from the DoD budget. This buy-back program will start purchasing weapons at 200 percent of their face value the first year, 150 percent the second year, 100 percent the third year. Thereafter there will be a 10 year pause, at which point the guns can be sold to the government at 10 percent of their value for the next 50 years.
6. The major gun manufactures of the United States, less those who create weapons for the federal government and the armed forces, will be bought out by the United States of America, for our own damned good.
[Okay his lordship is a tad weak in the econ area but that doesn't mean he still doesn't know what's best for all of you]
Okaaay - I don't even know what to say at this point. I think this whole essay is clear evidence that a) some people simply don't get the whole concept of a constitutional republic b) when you leave your domain of expertise, there's no limit to the amount of stupid you can achieve, and c) under no circumstances must Robert Bateman ever be allowed even a scrap of political power. And it's also a reminder that there are some good reasons why the US is a civilian-run republic.
Update: Herschel Smith at The Captain's Journal who's familiar with Bateman's previous work says he's just an academic troll:
And thus has Bateman shored up his progressive credentials one more time, and gotten the attention he so desperately wants, all at the same time. In the future, pay no attention to Mr. Bateman. He’s a publicity hound and attention seeker, and uses inflammatory and exaggerated rhetoric to evoke responses. The internet calls this a “troll.” It’s just that he’s a troll with credentials – and he’s an expert on everything. If you don’t believe it, just ask him.
Andrew Sullivan and the Great Porn Gap
Unintentional funneh I assume since Sullivan has no known sense of humor.
For reasons I won't share, I was poking around Andrew Sullivan's site this week and stumbled across the following: apparently, there's a "porn gap." In "high-income cities" the top five search terms on porn-video websites are "1. Gay 2. Ebony 3. Teen 4. Lesbian and 5. MILF while in low-income cities they are 1. Teen 2. Lesbian 3. MILF 4. Ebony 5. Gay."The first thing to cross my mind, obviously, was What would Charles Murray have to say about this?
But then, that question turns out to be easier to answer than you might think.
A weekend Wall Street Journal essay-"Charles Murray on the porn class divide"-practically writes itself. He would look back on the good old days, when both the upper and lower classes had to watch the same pornography, so that no matter how much money your family had, at least you'd have some shared social experience. And there'd be a quiz, so that the rich could realize how little they understand about blue-collar porn.
But the best part is that Murray could even recycle his last title: Coming Apart.

7 Horrifying Things You Didn't (Want to) Know About Prison
Inmates train for riots. At yard time, you'll see a ton of them doing martial arts together. Sometimes they'll start a fight with three or four guys just to see what our response is, that way they're able to work up a counter for it. They figure out what our moves are, and then they practice their methods for beating us while we watch...That's one of the reasons we let them have things like Xboxes and PlayStations. If you give them video games, they'll be less likely to start fights. So once a week we'd hook up a bunch of TVs in a classroom so all of the murderers and rapists could play Halo. There's nothing more interesting than seeing guys who have killed multiple people deathmatching each other. Teabagging seems a lot less innocent when you know it might end with one of the aforementioned riots.
Speaking of which ...

In Defense of the Going Out Shirt
It's being unfairly maligned.
The wild American bro is most recognizable by its ubiquitous nighttime camouflage: thigh-length swaths of cotton, collars pointed outward like airplane wings, sleeves rolled up and flared out like a Musketeer's. This is known in bro circles as the "going-out shirt." It is the bro's uniform whenever he goes to clubs, bars, house parties, or-god help us-dates. It is always worn untucked with jeans (boot cut, of course), and is considered the "dressed up" alternative to a T-shirt or polo.
I've still got a Going Out shirt or two and the bottom line is that I just look (and feel) good in it.
Breeding has done a lot of damage to dog breeds.
The English bulldog has come to symbolize all that is wrong with the dog fancy and not without good reason; they suffer from almost every possible disease. A 2004 survey by the Kennel Club found that they die at the median age of 6.25 years (n=180). There really is no such thing as a healthy bulldog. The bulldog's monstrous proportions makes them virtually incapable of mating or birthing without medical intervention.
Yahoo group. That is all.
The group thingy. And the middle class.
And my Twitter spew.

That's your basic "off heading" opening. Most common causes - lousy pack job that wound up asymmetric, or poor body position when opening that biased the load on one of the risers causing a turn during the opening.
Both are preventable with care. There's less common causes, but those are the top two

There are several.
The least popular; the "Let's quit drinking together," group, has had zero attendees since its inception in 2004.
The next least popular, the "Let's stop using profanity together," has, shockingly, zero attendees since 2004, but Alex the Chick signed up for one class when she was hammered, so there is one name on the roster.
The "Let's stop masturbating" group never even made it into the class schedule, so technically it doesn't exist.

Don H Says:
When I worked in USASOC Surgeon’s Office, we had a saying: “Ranger Tab or Ranger Scroll?” You could always tell the guys who had served in the Regiment. They were much more squared away (in the right way) than guys who had just been to the school. As my office mate (who was tabbed) put it after going on an exercise with the Regiment,if it were raining in the 82nd, and you told a trooper with a tab to put on his wet weather gear, he’d say “I don’t need snivel gear. I’m a Ranger.” And teh person asking would sah “Airborne. Huaah.” In the Regiment, if they told you to put on your snivel gear and you said that, they’d say “what part of F@#$%%^& put on your snivel gear don’t you understand?” Because they’d all proved whatever they needed to prove, and were more interested in soldier welfare (and, in turn, having soldiers available for the mission). So there is a real attitude difference between officers who had served in the Regiment and officers who had only been to the school. And one of the best GOs I ever worked for (James Jackson) was a former Regimental Commander–and a real out of the box thinker.
In 1997, the DOPMA Promotion Rate, which is the number of officers selected for promotion by a given board divided by the number of officers in the primary zone, was 65% for selection to lieutenant colonel. In 2002, it had jumped to in excess of 90%, and remained at that level until 2013. In fact, in 2006-2010, the DOPMA selection rate was IN EXCESS OF 100%. I know this is “inside baseball” talk, but to put it in simpler terms, to get a rate in excess of 100%, you have to basically select the equivalent of everybody in the primary zone, plus above the zoners and below the zoners. In other words, from 2006-2010, the only way you could not get promoted would be if you impregnated the division commander’s teenage daughter. And if his wife liked you, then you still might get promoted.
The typical pin-on point for Colonel is about 5 years (my time in grade was 4 years, 10 months when I pinned on O-6). So if we assume he is a due course officer, than he was selected in a year when they were selecting anybody who breathed for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel.
In 2006, the promotion selection rate to Lieutenant Colonel was 113.6% No, thatÂ’s not a typo. 113.6%.
Fortunately, the selection rate to Colonel has pretty much hovered at about 50% for most of the same time period.
So I ask, with a selection rate in excess of 100%, is it surprising htat a guy like this would get promoted?
A prediction:
I’m betting if you dig, you’ll find that he went to Ranger School and Airborne School as a cadet or immediately out of Officer Basic. The only jumps he will have made would have been in school (I’m not going to say he’s a five jump chump because if he went to airborne first, he would have jumped a couple of times in Ranger School). Doubt there was a battalion command in his career–and he may have declined consideration, just to be safe. Maybe a deployment or two, but most likely as a staff guy someplace. And probably an extraordinary amount of time in TDA overall.
And hopefully this copy and paste job doesn't land me in the barrel.

Not wanting to state the obvious here, but, such parsing on bolt actions is the thin edge of the wedge. Really, what the hell can someone do with a 6xround carcano, that you can't do with a k98? Once they start fucking round with this shit, no 303's, no carcano's... they'll end up telling you that your k98, springfield or mosin is an assault rifle too.

It is absolutely forbidden that mere colonials should ever rebel against the king. That is the purpose of the military, and a well regulated militia to guarantee that no rebellion against the government ever succeeds.
No outside force of arms should ever be permitted to challenge the legitimate government or the men who hold government positions.

A few months ago, a guy in the WSJ comments section, a career military guy who recently retired, said that in decades past that the Dems contempt for the US military reinforced military conservativism and thus made the idea of leftists declaring military rule absurd - the troops would never follow a left-wing president and fire on American civilians.
He said now he thinks the military would split 50-50%. Lots of purges, lots of brainwashing going on during the Obama era.

But reactionary-to-reactionary: the right of a freeman or, even, a moderately free serf to bear arms is not really about rebelling against the king. It's more about protecting oneself from bandits, which bandits the current king is refusing to police; for reasons of his own.

We have devolved into such a nation of pussies that we put those who act less pussiful on a pedestal. It's frequently undeserved. Most people physically and mentally could do the same things, they just don't, 'cause they're big pussies. It doesn't mean the big pussies are in any way less (or more) capable of comprehending freedom and objectivity. Representative government eventually fails when the state holds a monopoly on violence. I've worked with privates that fucking get this, but the ivory tower academy douchebags seem to struggle at times.
Point being, never let hero worship cloud what you know to be right. Good leaders in the military are all about moral courage, which demands booing this clown without caveat.

It's an oddball trapezoidal shape, and the terrain doesn't lend itself to that long of a range without a ton of dirtwork. Also, part of the property is an 8 acre lake smack in the middle, plus he has 7 streams running through other parts. The only logical explanation is that it isn't about insurance, but a way to track voters, and enroll as many medicare voters as they can, so that they can screw the productive class in this country and still hold their congressional seats.

Nothing anti-purebred about it.
The facts are that some purebreds have medical issues directly related to the manipulation of the breeding stock to create the breed.

Uh. Just because you ran the o-course doesn't give you street cred. I have a list of shitty officers that did this or that. People is people. Leaders are leaders. Rank doesn't mean shit.
Best officer I ever served with: Lt Gen Gary Voellger. I'd carry his ruck. Served on his staff and he was a man's man. And Col Wayne Bechler. Lt Col J. Nelson.
That is the end of the list. 13 years active service, 10 as a contractor. 3 names. Do the math.

Now diesel may not EXPLODE easily but it CAN if the mixture is just right and there's enough oxygen present with a detonator of sufficient power.
Fuel-air-fertilizer bombs use diesel or kerosene for preference.

This man blew people up and him and his wife tortured others. But none of that will be spoken of.
His short time rule (and don't think for one minute he wasn't being steered by the ANC) did little to nothing to better the country or it's problems. And long term, Black (tribal) rule will eventually destroy it like most other populist/communist/tribal groups have done through out the rest of Africa.

Per LtCol Bateman, and no offense to any verterans of our outstanding Army, but from the big green machine has often come the (very few) American military officer bad apples who favor fascism.
Read Victor Krulak's "First to Fight" for a fascinating account of how the Marine Corps' attempt to save itself from extinction also resulted in their saving America from near-total loss of civilian control of the military. Of particular interest is Colonel Merritt Edson, of Edson's Raiders fame, who submitted his retirement so that he could speak freely in front of Congress against Eisenhower and Truman's plan.

I have a 275 gallon diesel ( heating oil) tank in my basement. If a house fire won't do it, a lighter will?
Posted by: fluffy at December 05, 2013 11:50 PM (Ua6T/)
For Pete's sake, all you need is a wick. You can even set motor oil alight readily with a wick. Diesel is far better than gasoline for getting a campfire lit. Splash diesel on the sticks, which act as wicks, hold a match under one, and takes fire in seconds, and the fire spreads in a few more seconds. Doesn't explode like gasoline, and there's more heat in it, so the wood itself get's going in due course.

First: gratz on the docorate. Wife is 4 years into hers. I won't get one, I'm walowicz from the big bang theory: masters in eng. I'm too old and too tired, and the one thing I love no one offers a degree in within a 1K radius. And don't have $60K to drop on something no one will ever hire me to do (astrophysics). My kids call me "professor" and I constantly correct them: "It's staff sergeant, goddammit!" but they persist.
Second: microfiche! even spell check rejected the word, that's how old we are.

Today I was in a part of town I rarely visit, getting an oil change and went for a walk to kill some time. In the nearby Food 4 Less (part of the Kroger grocery empire) they had taters that could sustain a small family for a few days. They had to be at least three pounds or more.

Now that everyone seems to have settled down, let me stir things up a bit.
Has anyone checked out:
www.goodrx.com/ ----Prescriptions, and not Canadian Pharmacy
www.medibid.com/ ---- They might be a search and negotiation company, thet will find local physicians, surgeons, facilities, etc., that will take cash
www.routethree.com/products/critical-insurance/
This might offer something like AFLAC, perhaps cover hospital stays, fixing broken bones, etc.
Does anyone have any information , thoughts, recommendations, etc.?
I started at a thread at Hot Air yesterday, related to opting out of 404Care, and ended up with these. Part of the problem I see is that they seem to want to get my information first. OTOH, they do seem to be somewhat reputable.
It looks like it might be possible to greatly mitigate the effects of 404Care and only have to deal with the IRS fine.

I've pushed maybe 300 students through physics in the last 18 months. Of those, when class started, 10 were black. 5 have passed.
I push more asians (this isn't racist, it's fact) than black students. Also, increasingly: women. I've been at this teaching game for about 20 years.
You used to never be able to find 1) a girl or 2) a hot girl in a physics class (believe me, as an undergrad I was hunting). Now?
Holy yoga pants hot smart chicks! And they're like evil smart. You do NOT mess with these girls, half of them are carrying, they've got knives, guns and brains. Which, as a dude, I have to admit is exceedingly frightening.

Cold moving in, but we're still dry ...
Cold starting here right at the freezing point. Been raining all day with the forecast calling for sleet for the morning commute.
We work 12 hr shifts, weird rotation, with only 4 people even qualified for the position. You definitely hope that the next guy can make it in.

one day in lab I stood up fast from my chair without knowing there was a guy walking behind me with his stack-o-cards pinned between his hands. of course I bumped him, and naturally the middle of the stack slid free and hit the floor so all he left was the part on each end stuck in his grip.
I was so embarrassed.

A few years ago I went for an update prescription for my glasses and the guy who did the exam noted that my blood pressure was quite spectacular. Such that he wanted to call an ambulance to take me to the ER right then and there. I resisted and went home. Some time later I had my mother drive me over to be examined. Doctor said wow and then said I'm admitting you.
They soon administered some drugs and my BP was soon within an acceptable range. I was fifty+ pounds overweight and the likely cause was obvious, though they did want to eliminate a possible blockage of the renal artery as that can get very serious. At that point they could have scheduled some tests as an outpatient and sent me home, knowing I had no insurance and this was already going to be expensive. But no, they kept me there for four days, sharing a room with a elderly dying man with no bowel control and a running vocalization of his suffering.
They then presented me with a bill for nearly $17,000, and that didn't even include all of the time for the assorted specialists who poked at me briefly. All told it was closer to $20K. I paid the specialists over the course of a year but the hospital got stiffed.
This price tag was simply absurd. After it was established that my BP was controlled by medication, there was no reason for me to remain more than a single night. That would have eliminated the bulk of the bill. The rest would still have been ridiculously high because they have to charge such inflated amounts to get compensated for any amount that covers the real cost. Government has well and truly screwed up the medical industry and the solution sure as hell isn't more of the same.

A couple of years back, the BH and I visited Saint Petersburg, Russia. Lovely place. Every year, around April, 200 pound chunks of ice fall off the faces of the buildings [most of which are about 3-4 stories tall] during the thaw. People are killed on a regular basis -- maybe not every year, but sometimes twice in one year.

Process here is outside. When you lose flow in the winter, it's easiest to just walk the lines looking for the spot that has snow or ice still on the pipe.

Reminds me of something I saw near Osterley on the Piccadilly Line -- there were all these blocks of dwellings, but all the waste pipes were outside the walls (facing the trains). Being a SoCal guy, I always figured the waste pipes would run inside the walls, but they ran 'em outside.

Most large cities have a central heating / cooling system, generally operated by a utility company. Makes more sense to have one central utilities house with piping to all of the large buildings.
Not all buildings will use these systems, but not having to maintain boilers / chillers, no need to design them into a building, and the air permitting requirements are getting tougher all the time. Letting a central BOHO handle all of that for you is a major plus.

Funny you should mention that.....I've been gradually increasing the strength and bitterness of my morning tea to the point where it's practically undrinkable and I'll get sick if I drink it too fast....and it's only recently that I've discovered that the way to fix the side effects is to not brew it so damned long in the first place. 7. That the people have a right to bear arms for the defense of themselves and their own state, or the United States, or for the purpose of killing game; and no law shall be passed for disarming the people or any of them, unless for crimes committed, or real danger of public injury from individuals; and as standing armies in the time of peace are dangerous to liberty, they ought not to be kept up; and that the military shall be kept under strict subordination to and be governed by the civil powers.
It's evident that the Founders wanted to keep the number of Amendments to a minimum: the First Amendment, for instance, actually covers five different issues, the Fifth an additional five and so on. In this highly compacted context, it doesn't take a lot of imagination to see 'item seven', compacted (maybe a little too well) for the sake of brevity, as being both the source and true meaning of the Second Amendment.

I remember raising my hand and asking do you really think the Founder's thought it was necessary to add an Amendment to the Constitution that said the military was allowed to own rifles. Even the overwhelmingly liberal class burst into laughter because it was so absurd.

While the left tries to claim that the 2nd Amendment traces to Federalist 29 in which Hamilton describes the importance of Federalist control over the militia, the 2nd Amendment does not trace to Federalist 29, but to #13 of Mason's Rights.
