You Can Do Anything: Must Every Kids' Movie Reinforce the Cult of Self-Esteem?
It's probably no coincidence that the supremacy of the magic-feather syndrome in children's movies overlaps with the so-called "cult of self-esteem." The restless protagonists of these films never have to wake up to the reality that crop-dusters simply can't fly faster than sleek racing aircraft. Instead, it's the naysaying authority figures who need to be enlightened about the importance of never giving up on your dreams, no matter how irrational, improbable, or disruptive to the larger community. As Jean Twenge, the controversial cultural critic of America's supposed narcissism epidemic, argues in her bestselling book Generation Me, younger generations "simply take it for granted that we should all feel good about ourselves, we are all special, and we all deserve to follow our dreams."...In addition to disparaging routine labor, these films discount the hard work that enables individuals to reach the top of their professions. Turbo and Dusty don't need to hone their craft for years in minor-league circuits like their racing peers presumably did. It's enough for them simply to show up with no experience at the world's most competitive races, dig deep within themselves, and out-believe their opponents. They are, in many ways, the perfect role models for a generation weaned on instant gratification.
...Contemporary animated films would never emulate the tough life lessons of A Boy Named Charlie Brown, but they'd do well to reintroduce the twin notions of failure and humility. In a movie like Planes, it should be good enough for a modest crop-duster just to qualify for the Wings Around the Globe race.
Turkeys Away: An Oral History of the Famous WKRP Episode
A very entertaining account of how it came to be. A lot of WKRP was based on WQXI in Atlanta.
The 30,000 Year Old Cave of Mystery
There's a cave in France where no humans have been in 26,000 years. The walls are full of fantastic, perfectly-preserved paintings of animals, ending in a chamber full of monsters 1312-feet underground, where CO2 and radon gas concentrations provoke hallucinations. It's called the the Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc Cave, a really weird and mysterious place. The walls contain hundreds of animals-like the typical Paleolithic horses and bisons-but some of them are not supposed to be there, like lions, panthers, rhinos and hyenas.
A few are not even supposed to exist, like weird butterflyish animals or chimerical figures half bison half woman. These may be linked to the hallucinations. The trip is such that some archeologists think that it had a ritual nature, with people transcending into a new state as they descended into the final room.
In fact, the paintings themselves are of such sophistication-some even have three-dimensional relief-that is hard to believe they were made back then. However, radiocarbon dating shows that these paintings are indeed prehistoric: A group was made around 27,000-26,000 years ago and the other at 32,000-30,000 years ago.

And may I just say that the Turkey Drop episode of WKRP is on of the top 5 funniest fucking things ever to exist in a weekly television episode. It goes up with:
John Cleese in the dead parrot bit from Monty Python
Harvey Corman and Tim Conway in the dentist bit from the Carol Burnett show.
Artie Johnson and Ruth Buzzi in the dirty old man bit from Laugh-In.
I'm still debating the 5th one.

Quite in fact my 14 year old son pointed out that Barney the Dinosaur and Bob the Builder perhaps literally elected Barry.
They resent the gains the harder working make legitimately, and then seek to darken the notion of the work that led to the gains they hope to usurp.

If you haven't seen Cave of Forgotten Dreams, I highly recommend it. It makes you wonder what other mysteries are out there in the world that humanity has forgotten*
On the kids movie front, both The Incredibles and Ratatouille go against the just believe tide. The Incredibles has the immortal if everyone is special then no one is line and the plot of Ratatouille revolves around the hard work it takes to become a success. Sure, it has the everyone can cook vs. not everyone should argument, with everyone can winning out, but that win only comes after a ton of hard work. The message of Ratatouille is that everyone should be given the chance to work their ass off to be a success. It is not a coincidence that those are both Brad Bird films.

I've never watched Will and Grace. Nor have I watched Seinfeld, Friends, Big Bang Theory, How I Met your Mother, or It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
I watched whatever my folks wanted to watch in the 70's. I was a kid and we had 3 channels. In the 80's I was a teenager and really didn't watch much tv. In the 90's I was busy working, getting married, having a baby, watching my first husband die way too young, and really didn't watch that much weekly episode type tv. In the 00' my kids took over the tv and I get to listen to cartoons whenever I can't avoid it. (Thank God for the mp3 player). Now, I watch the Duck Dudes, The Voice, Sleepy Hollow and America's got Talent. Those are the only regular weekly shows I watch.

MLS has grown markedly during the Great Recession. Of course, that's because it's appeal right now is mainly to upper class whites -- the group that has prospered during the recession.
MLS has done especially well in the Pacific Northwest, Vancouver, Seattle, Portland.
MLS has seemingly permanent niche in the American sports landscape. It's small, but it's solid and keeps growing at a good pace. As long as they keep costs under control they should continue to prosper.

A Christmas-y elf had a dream
Making toys with a full head of steam
He filled up the shelf
In spite of himself
Though he suffered from low elf-esteem.

Breaking Stalins Nose
by Eugene Yelchin
Sasha Zaichik has known the laws of the Soviet Young Pioneers since the age of six:
The Young Pioneer is devoted to Comrade Stalin, the Communist Party, and Communism.
A Young Pioneer is a reliable comrade and always acts according to conscience.
A Young Pioneer has a right to criticize shortcomings.
But now that it is finally time to join the Young Pioneers, the day Sasha has awaited for so long, everything seems to go awry. He breaks a classmate's glasses with a snowball. He accidentally damages a bust of Stalin in the school hallway. And worst of all, his father, the best Communist he knows, was arrested just last night.
Eugene Yelchin's moving story of a ten-year-old boy's world shattering is masterful in its simplicity, powerful in its message, and heartbreaking in its plausibility.

Infinity Park in Glendale, CO is a rugby stadium built for the local team and serves as the unofficial home stadium for the Eagles. It seats about 4000, which is about half the size of the pro leagues in the UK and Ireland.
The Aviva Premiership in England is thinking of helping to set up a pro league in the US since the European championship is kind of falling apart, and they see the US as a market that they can exploit.
If it puts more rugby on my television screen, I will be happy.

Actually this is part of the reason almost all the expansion teams will be in the South: Orlando, Miami, Atlanta and maybe San Antonio. This way the northern teams would be on the road in much of the winter, with perhaps 2-4wks x-mas/jan. The switch will be made, if for no other reason than to get the playoff out of football season.

If it scares the bejeezus out of you and sickens you to your stomach, it's accurate. I was actually doing pretty well with that aspect, thanks to my long-running "Crusade to Bolt Wheels to Everything" project, but it threw me off my timing enough that I got to "old door hooky-widget was bolted through door using spacing that new door hooky-widget barfs on" and had to call it a day. Tomorrow, I'm fabricating an adapter plate to change old 4-bolts to new 2-bolts, and probably running off to Lowe's to buy countersunk screws for the new 2-bolt holes. It looks like the big deals after that are safety widgets and settings. The actual track and motor unit are firmly mounted where they need to be -- above a shelf unit full of magazine back issues, coax cable snippets, a bike carrier for a car, some boxes of empty boxes, a tub of old financial statements, parts for other shelf units, a solid gold Kama-Sutra coffee pot, and a baby's arm holding an apple.

Picked up a few items like a 3-pack of screen protectors for my phone that I've been meaning to replace for months. Plotted the destruction of mankind a bit. The usual.
If you want to avoid looking at hideously overweight people, it is the right time to shop at Walmart. The majority of the people there were stocking shelves, a task that quickly filters out those unwilling to exert themselves.

Who is to say that that AI hasn't already occurred?
And is quietly manipulating media and other systems creating some of the chaos that seems to be spreading.
There already have been unexplained and odd shortages, outages and screwups connected with intelligent systems.
Who's to say that an AI that decided to eliminate Humanity would do so with bullets or robots?
How much of our misunderstandings and glitches in our daily lives are errors or a very subtle plan being put into action that destroys our civilization.
An AI doesn't have to kill humans to eliminate them as a threat. Just reduce their ability to BE a threat.
Either by making the Human Race totally dependent on computers and interactivity or rendering them incapable of stopping their continued existence.
Gee. We've reached that point already, haven't we?

Typically when I see a new thread, with no comments,I shoot back to the old one to grab willow, then jump forward.
Never got into the "First comment"race.
Did that for too many years at Jarles Chonsons place between photos of tankers and fence gates, with a side collection of empty beaches.
Not judging...simply saying it's not for me.

"In fact, the paintings themselves are of such sophistication-some even have three-dimensional relief-that is hard to believe they were made back then. However, radiocarbon dating shows that these paintings are indeed prehistoric: A group was made around 27,000-26,000 years ago and the other at 32,000-30,000 years ago."
Or, you know, it could just be that radiocarbon dating is not all it's cracked up to be. And you really don't have a farking clue.
