Even Obama Can't Violate Fundamental Laws of Politics

There is an ironclad law of redistributive politics at play in the ACA (ObamaCare) fiasco.

This law is that concentrated interests almost always conquer diffuse interests.  Milk producers are a concentrated interest.  Milk consumers are a diffuse interest.  Guess which group is favored by the long history of milk price supports?  Dairy farmers get fat checks.  School teachers and plumbers and accountants pay more for milk.

One corollary to this law is that legislators try to create concentrated benefits and diffuse costs by separating the funding mechanism (taxes on all) from the supply of benefits (a local interest). Perhaps your community benefits from a community center, educational program, or a resurfaced highway.  Those projects almost always fail a simple cost-benefit test because if they made sense for local communities to do, they would just do them.  If they don't, they seek assistance from their representatives in Congress.

...Vulnerable Democrats in Congress are starting to panic because they are seeing the consequences of violating the law of diffuse and concentrated interests.  Those insurance cancellation letters and the higher prices faced by a portion of those shopping on the exchange are a small portion of the population (probably less than one percent), but they are highly concentrated, not to mention vocal.

Yep signs like this are a sign of a major politics FAIL:

Why Government Hates the Family

The long-term goal of the government's social policies are to flatten society out into one atomized mass. There will be only the state and the individual, and the individual will have no protection, no mediating institutions, between itself and the state.

Antipathy towards a wide variety of actors--the Catholic Church, the Boy Scouts, "special interests" of all types, political parties, private universities--can all be understood in light of this fact.

The government reserves special hatred for the family, because the family is older than the state and, unless steps are taken, will outlast it. It gives the individual a locus of attention besides the state, and therefore, must be crushed. The ongoing destruction of the concepts of both marriage and family by the left is intended to remove permanently the transcendent family from the political sphere, leaving only mere biological relationships, which are not enough to inspire resistance to the state.

Because your real family is all your fellow progressive comrades.

Fatal Shootouts

Both of these videos show people being fatally shot. They're not graphic but consider this a content warning.

Here two armed robbers in Brazil hold up a pizza place but don't realize a policeman saw them.

And here is another video showing a traffic stop gone bad.

Can you spot when the gunman was fatally shot? Answer: Nope because guns aren't death rays.

Woo Hoo We're Number 1!

Guess who is the world's largest producer of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon fuels (oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids)? For years it has been Russia, which is deeply dependent on the production and export of such products (taxes and tariffs on them provide 40 percent of the government's budget).

But this year, probably already, Russia will be overtaken by the United States, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal. U.S. oil production increased by more than a million barrels a day last year, the largest annual increase since oil production began in 1859. Russian oil production has been falling.

This has huge geopolitical implications and those implications all favor the United States. Imports of oil and gas are falling, down 15 and 32 percent respectively in the last five years, improving the balance of trade and reducing the political leverage of such countries as Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela.

And all this is despite Obama's best efforts.

Matt Yglesias Goes to a Walmart

And finds it surprisingly great.

Like most good urban liberals, I've been engaged in a lifelong near-boycott of Walmart. Not so much out of any deeply felt, principled objections to the store, but because they don't really build Walmarts in big liberal cities. When the company tries to set up shop in a liberal town, it's frequently stymied by union groups and their allies. The myriad zoning and permitting rules surrounding urban land create many avenues for groups with political clout to block disfavored stores, and such moves have, for example, kept Walmart out of New York City for years.

But on Wednesday, after running a gantlet of political obstacles, two new Walmarts opened in Washington, D.C. And the one I visited, at least, is pretty great.

But completely passé since it didn't satisfy his needs at the moment.

Still, while wandering around, it was hard to avoid the conclusion that the urban-format Walmart may be an idea whose time has already passed. The store was actually surprisingly busy for a midmorning Wednesday, with seemingly half the off-duty shift workers and scooter-bound disabled residents of the city plying the aisles. But there was nothing I wanted to buy.

And here is a classic video of two brits visiting Walmart who find their snark overcome by admiration of the behemoth known as a Walmart Megastore.

The Coach Who Never Punts

Kevin Kelley is the head football coach at Pulaski Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas. In games, he instructs his team to never punt, to never receive punts, and almost always onside kick.

The numbers Kelley cites are that eye-popping. And he isn't cooking the books: Cal professor David Romer concluded that teams should not punt when facing fourth-and-4 or less; NFL stats analyst Brian Burke has detailed the need to rethink fourth-down decision-making; Football Outsiders has conflated punts with turnovers. You've even read about it on this site. Most fans and analysts who are willing to accept that change is a fundamental part of life have embraced the idea that automatically punting on fourth down doesn't make sense.

Since Kelley took over, Pulaski is 124-22 and has won three state titles.

5 Animal Rights Campaigns That Managed to Screw Over Animals

The Humane Society wanted to euthanize all of Michael Vick's dogs (luckily a judge disagreed) and then just a few years later worked to allow him to get more dogs. WTF?

14 Yeah, the 80's really sucked for tv. I don't know why. Apart from the odd show, it was pretty dire. No wonder video rental joints and vcr's went like gangbusters back then. The 60's and 70's were ok and generally it was ok in the 90's, but man, the 80's were sucky for tv. I'm pretty sure the correct thinking is that it was all Ronald Reagan's fault.

32 1980s TV was a blur for me. Graduated High school in 80 went to college for a year and a half and got kicked out. Worked crap jobs and drank way too much for a couple years. Then went to Vo tech for 8 hours a day with a 6 hour a day part time job and drank too much for 2 years. Graduated Vo Tech got a full time job and my first kid was born within 3 months. cut back a lot on the drinking but still didn't have much time for TV. Then it was the 90s.

33 Yglesias is such an idiot.  Urban walmarts will succeed because you can get stuff NOW, not 3 days later, and it'll be cheaper.

Amazon's prices aren't any better than Walmart's and you gotta pay shipping costs as well, and you gotta wait days to get your shit, and you expose yourself to all manner of online hack chicanery.  Chances of getting identity theived at WMT when forking over greenbacks?  ZERO.  Absolute FUCKING ZERO.

Graduated in 87 but most of the 80s are a black hole to me. I remember I got drunk and high and chased girls but most of the details are really fuzzy.

79 Kevin Kelley is a raging asshole. He gets all kinds of credit for his innovative approach to football. It's all bullsh*t. he s successful because he coaches at a private school and can recruit the players he wants. Our high school played in the same conference as Pulaski Academy (PA) for two years. During that time, we played them 3 times losing all three by substantial margins. In those three games, we recovered all but one onside kick. In fact in the first meeting, they turned the ball over 5 times. The 2nd of the two years, we went into a regular season game with them as number 2 in the state (they were number one). The score was 47-0 at halftime. We met again in the state championship game. The final that time was 63-28. That season, he had 5 Division 1 prospects and several more Division Two players. The student population of his school is about 350 or so. Yeah, it's his innovative approach to football.

It has been stuck in my head since I first heard it 2 days ago.

No, it's not. There's a hell of a lot more, but that means more shit. Mind you the ratio's probably improving. The 00's, generally were fucking sucktastic. Arguably worse than the 80's. For all the faults of 80's shows, at least there was an effort... even if it meant they were trying hard at sucking. The 00's saw the zenith of wall to wall reality tv suckage.

I believe NDH, sorry if I am giving her credit, when it should be to someone else, said sheÂ’d like to see how the media reacts if Reverend Graham passes compared to Mandela. GWB is a good man, if I were him I would avoid SCOAMF like the plague he is. Now that he has been gone for over five years and the youth has abandoned SCOAMF, Bush going with him gives some creditability to the JEF. The Bushes should have gone by themselves. Did they go to Dame ThatcherÂ’s funeral? I do not believe anyone as a United States delegation. They went privately. I believe Jim Baker went but I could be wrong, along with others from the Reagan admin. but they went as private citizens. Dame Thatcher was a US Ally, what did Mandela do for us?

110 "Guess who is the world's largest producer of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon fuels (oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids)? For years it has been Russia, which is deeply dependent on the production and export of such products (taxes and tariffs on them provide 40 percent of the government's budget)." Which is part of the reason why Russia likes to arm the Middle East; the resulting instability keeps oil prices higher than they might otherwise be.

132 If you actually listed all of the new shows for each decade I think you would find that most of them were crud. The 80's were the height of violent non-violence. Sure everyone had "assault weapons" but they couldn't hit anything. Therefore, it had to be resolved either via car chase, explosions (somehow better than bullets), or a fist fight.

The national Humane Society has had a bad reputation for years. They're more interested in pushing a political agenda than in protecting actual animals. The local Humane Societies are pretty good. I wouldn't donate to any of these national organizations. Most communities have very good rescue groups that are locally run and whose entire focus is on finding homes for pets that would otherwise be put to sleep. Michael Vick and other people involved in dog fighting should not be allowed to own dogs. Period. The fact that he is a pro athlete shouldn't get him special treatment.

Compare and contrast:

In the 1983-84 season, you could watch Newhart, St. Elsewhere, Hillstreet Blues, Ripley's Believe it or Not and a number of other not bad shows.

In 2013 on the legacy networks, you get to watch hours and hours of wannabe divas and willowy effeminate men singing, and everything else is a "Evil White Male Republican" plot point of the week drama series.

It physically nauseates me to see what is being wrought in my country these past years.

But know this--the precepts she was founded on are still bright beneath the slime.

We will be as great again.  You cannot put that genie back in the bottle.

I may not live to see her resurgence and you young ones may perhaps witness it in the fullness of your years.

   But it WILL come.

Knowing this, you MUST, in whatever way open to you, work to see it happen.

I'm as sure of this as the sun rising, because all of you here are Americans.

Yeah, it is, despite the sorta flat direction etc. It could have benefitted from a bit more style and movement. But, good cast, story well told and all that. Al Bundy has an early bit part as the team member that elects not to go on the mission. A wise choice, really.

After a little reflection, it's painfully clear to me how the Obamacare train wreck will play out:

1. Come January, hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, of people will be left high and dry: cancelled by their old providers, unable to buy insurance via the exchanges.

2. Obama and his media claque declare: "See? Market capitalism *failed* all these people! We need to step in and help them!"

3. An "emergency" bill is presented in Congress to create "temporary" federal health insurance for these people. I.e., single payer.

4. Republicans who oppose said bill will be slandered as scheming to deny health care to the middle class.

5. Bill passes: for the children. Naturally.

6. With the continuing collapse of ACA, more and more people are funnelled into the "emergency" single-payer system - i.e., *real* Obamacare.

7. Media shouts hosanna, Wall Street goes bananas, Democrats sweep to control of both houses of Congress in November.

Call me paranoid if you like; but I think that with this gang there's no such thing as paranoia: only degrees of awareness. I'm willing to bet a bright, shiny nickel that the "emergency" single-payer bill has already been written, and will be sprung on the us on or around January 15, with the talking points and canned "news" stories being worked on even as I type this.

Remember: these people never let a crisis go to waste. Which is why they manufacture so many of them.

482 I'm sure it has been said before so I'll just repeat it: The Johnson Foundation, et. al, have been working on a single payer shift for decades. If you've been reading ThinkProgress for the last 10 years you know that hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent to help about 8% of the US population force the issue. As it happens, they've been successful enough to get the most radical group into power since Wilson and FDR and by legal but unethical moves and major lies plugged in the transitional system to get to single payer. Seven years ago I was reading white papers from the Left explaining how, after they force everyone to buy insurance, they would force all healthcare workers into government unions which would control costs and help ease everyone into Single Payer. The political miscalculation they have made is only one thing: No matter how much radical bullshit spin they put on it in the now State Media millions of Americans are getting direct marketing snail mail punching them in the face telling them they are fucked and now completely owned by the State. Doesn't fly even in what little we have left of a free society. And we laughed. Oh how we laughed. Just my contribution to the noise.

No. Two reasons. One, I don't know if any of the other provincial auto clubs are any different in that respect. Two, I can pull wrenches with the best of them, and I have saved enough money over the years by NOT belonging to an auto club, that if I ever need a long highway, I can pay it out of my savings. 494 I spent most of my high school years drunk and high as a frikkin kite - '82-'86 - and somehow scored an 1120 on the SAT (which I took ONE [1] time with a hangover).
As an office aid (senior elective) I actually glimpsed my 2 inch thick 'permanent record' (while stoned, after lunch of course) which scared the piss out me of me because it was 2 INCHES THICK.
So after I graduated #292 out of 307 and 4 of my best friends went to jail, I applied to Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University-San Marcos) where I went on to earn 2 Bachelor's degrees [Management and Marketing] which allowed me to succeed beyond my wildest dreams, much less anyone that knew me as a young man.
And not once did I ever watch network TV from '82-'93.
TURN THE TV OFF
AMERICA! I LOVE THIS FUCKIN' COUNTRY!

They may abandon the man and the ACA, but until there's a sufficiently powerful and widespread alternative or a lot of partisans have a come-to-Jesus moment, they will simply do the same thing the next time around. Some of them really don't think of themselves as Partisan, they're not *lying* when they say they're not partisan so much as they are brutally unaware of how easily manipulated they are - one of the "tricks" is programming them in school and pop culture to believe that "the establishment" is always The Conservatives, regardless of who actually has power. The "establishment" (bureaucracy) has been "liberal" for a very long time. The MFM and other lower-rank "liberals" still think it's the other way around.

I've used mine enough over the years to have in the "tolerable loss" area. It's not great, but every so often it helps (like when Jiffy Lube refilled my car with six quarts of oil and it blew the front main seal [car only holds 3.5 quarts]. Plus, you get discounts on museum tickets and touristy stuff. And I got exceptional customer service when Hertz in Charlotte, NC, was playing games -- as in "Google Earth for walking directions to other rental agency" customer service [Hi, Amy!!! Renewed thanks!].

Plus, he was used to dealing with board meetings where you learn what needs to be said, and when to STFU. GOP candidates seem to do a good job with answering questions, but they don't know when to STFU. Once they go past the STFU moment, that is when the facepalming starts.

OT and short, but I love this place.  I lurk a lot, because of the time difference, but reading the comments, even well after the fact sometimes, helps keep me sane.

I've been in Afghanistan since March.  Sitting in Kyrgyzstan right now, waiting on the next flight.  Somebody messed up and we missed a flight, so instead of 72 hours here, we got 10 days.

Then Baldy posted a link on the Pearl Harbor thread, about the guys on the West Virginia.  I've been in the Navy almost 17 years, and never heard that story before.  Those guys were stuck on the bottom of the harbor for longer than we'll stay in Manas, and then they died.  Kinda puts my little problems in perspective.

Point is, thanks for everything you do - to ace for letting us hang out here, to the cobs for keeping it running smooth, and to the commenters for making it all what it is.  I love you guys (most of you, at least), more than a lot of people I know in real life.

544 520 Any of the legal beagles still here? While I was at Gushie's this weekend, somebody (probably my asshole neighbor) was in my backyard. A bunch if stuff was moved & knocked over, plus they tried to get into the storage shed on the north side of the yard. Oh, and the creeping fig on my side of the dividing wall is knocked off (it was fine when I mowed the lawn Friday) like someone scrabbled their way over the wall.
So, if I get him on tape doing the same stuff, can I get him busted for criminal trespass and attempted breaking and entering? And will that fuck up his physical therapist certifications?

Posted by: bebe's boobs destroy at December 09, 2013 01:49 AM (9MTZt)

In general, there are a bunch of limitations about imputing prior bad acts to people who have been later demonstrated to be acting badly, unless you can establish a pattern of behavior. In other words, if you get him on film shinnying over your back wall, you can get him for damages on that day, but not the day before; if you get him leggin' it over the back wall twice, you can get him for damages on those two days -- but not a third; but if you get him for 19 occasions of tiptoe-ing through the tulips, you can probably add on the 20th.

Depending on the area, a man-trap, shovel, and sack of lime might be a better investment than a security camera. Has to be somewhere where passers-by won't respond to the screams, though.

I'm not one, but I have opinions. It sounds like trespassing, but it would probably help if you had signs posted saying No Trespassing on your wall/fence. Also take lots of dated pics of the signs and the backyard, then set up your video camera.

At most, you might get the cops to charge him with trespassing and property destruction; likely misdemeanors and thus you will have to sign charges personally. But the evidence could also come in handy for a restraining order or civil lawsuits against the prick.

548 An excerpt from a letter I sent regarding the Charlotte fiasco:

As to myself, I called the AAA number on my reservation paperwork and bitterly explained that I was only doing business with Hertz on AAA's say-so.....and that recommendation wasn't looking too well for AAA's business judgment. The AAA rep, Amy, went significantly above and beyond the call of duty to extract me from my situation – even using numeric street addresses to triangulate my position relative to other rental agencies – and found an available rental car 300 yards away at a different company [thus proving that Hertz' assertion #3 was an outright lie]. Mind you, that's a 300 yard slog cross-country with cumbersome luggage....but against the prospect of an indeterminate wait at Hertz?

We made arrangements on the phone, checked them twice, and she even called the counter of the other agency to verify that a car was actually available. I then hung up, and started off on foot across the Hertz lot to the frontage road, down 3 driveways, and onto the other agency's lot – where everything magically started to work like it was supposed to.

I have no idea why AAA is so enamored of Hertz – I have never in my life experienced such a horrible quality of service with rental cars, and I've rented right-hand-drive in Scotland and Fiji with a California license. But I can tell you that representatives like Amy are why people are enamored of AAA. She was polite and professional with someone obviously cranked-out-of-shape, tired, and in a bind. She was clever and resourceful when it came to making alternate plans. And she was thorough and effective in making sure that things were going to get better. When I finally marched out of the Bedlam at the Hertz lot – 2-1/2 hours after getting there – I felt that I had a guardian angel who had saved me.....and I wanted her management to know about it.

549 BBD: Harbor Freight has a 4-channel video recording system (to a HD) for about $250.00 (with coupon). Fry's and other places have similar systems, with likely better reliability, and probably better connectivity), for not much more. You might set one up, very discretely on your property, to video ONLY YOUR property, but so close to the edge that a hand or foot on to your property will be recorded. Getting advice of your personal lawyer is probably also a good idea. The needed results can be put on a USB drive and handed to your lawyer for action.

551 Wow, is there legal expertise here tonight? I was wondering about something. Would someone be kind enough to offer their thoughts? Thanks in advance. I had a punch-card with a fitness organization. I still had 13 out of 15 visits left on the card, but the organization changed owners, sent out an email saying there would be limited time for people to make use of their punchcards (I got the email, but didn't catch the notification) and now they will no longer honor the punchcards. Is it legal for them to not honor an agreement made with the previous owner? I've done my part -- paid the fee. Allowing me to have my visits costs them little to nothing and preserves customer goodwill. I am certainly not interested in buying another push card if they didn't honor the previous one.

Yep. Your contract is with the old company, and they are gone. The new company ought to show flexibility, but they don't have to.

555 Bebe, we had neighbors trespass, vandalize, and take things from our property. We called the sheriff (we are outside city limits) who came and looked things over. They just kinda added it to the list of transgressions by the neighbors until they had enough to tell the neighbors, "Hey, you're taking this too far. We're going to have to start fining you." These were kids doing this, and we did insist that the kids come over and work off the hassle they caused us.

Posted by: Mindy at December 08, 2013 10:15 PM (GRLuN)

556 Also HI BEBE! And I wish you good luck with that. Surveillance cameras are getting relatively cheap, just make sure that if an installer comes out they're discreet about it. Sounds like the neighbor is an awful busybody and it kind of depends whether your goal is surveillance or deterrence.

There are two big things that skew the outcome of your situation -- first, the circumstances of "organization changed owners" -- and, second, the laws in your state. If, for instance, the new owners picked up the assets (but not liabilities) of the place.....you're SOL. If they picked up the operating business, but the state doesn't say they can't slap an expiration date on visits.....there ya go. But I can recommend one thing....ask management what the best deal you can get is -- without arguing. Go in and say, "I don't know what you bought when you took over the place, I haven't gotten down'n'dirty with local 'prepaid service card' law -- but I'm sitting across the table from you and seeing whether we have a mutual interest in a continuing relationship."

Comes in my yard & cuts my plants, but refuses to cut the tree hanging over in my yard, that if it falls will land on my house. Had the balls to tell me it was my responsibility to cut what was hanging over. When I told him it wasn't, he said he'd take card of it when he is ready. 570 Mindy: Let me play too. First, how much money is involved? $200.00 is not a trivial amount, but walking away might turn out to be your best option. Second, how much time has elapsed, between the e-mail and the end of the window for use, and since the window closed? I'm guessing a 2-4 week window, and it's been at least 2 weeks since it closed. This strikes me as a potentially good deal if you can make #3 (below) work: Third, how much for a new card? This might be the best option ... see if they will discount it a bit. A smile and friendly attitude might just do it. If not, then find a new place. With no harsh words, no "word" will get around, and if the new place asks, all you have to do is say things couldn't be worked out, and you were worried about taking a complete loss again. You win.

The trick is finding the real management. One time, I was sitting with my aunt, uncle, and grandma in a restaurant (Bob Evans?), and some stuff spilled on the floor in the gap in the counter between employee-land and customer-land.

Waitresses carefully stepped around it, busboys ran off to tables, leads glanced at it and looked away.....and then a nondescript older woman wearing regular street clothes showed up and started methodically cleaning it up. "Ahhh," thought I -- "management."

The guys on the hot seat, who can be creative and make a deal to get something done, are going to want to be good to you. Anyone else won't have the authority to get close.

I'm "economically suboptimal" and a bit of a cheapskate. This membership is far and away the best deal in my little town, so the alternatives are not nearly as affordable. At this point, I'm thinking it may be better to just be more resourceful with my workouts (bodyweight exercises at the closest playground) and leave it at that until I strike it rich or at least strike it comfortable.

598 So, a little excerpt from last night's Xmas party for BH's work.....

The head dude for her division (founder of the company) is chatting with us about the NC facility (which is run by the BH). He notes that there was someone whose hiring got crossways and had to come to California for training instead of sitting in a class in NC while a California trainer went there. And how he'd visited the site and that everyone was jealous because she'd actually gone to CA.

He specifically mentioned that it was her first time on an airplane coming out -- so I got to put him some knowledge. It was also her first time on an underground train (subway), her first time on a boat, and her first time on a cable car ['cause, where else are there cable cars?]. How did I know this? 'Cause I was drivin'.

Now, you could go ga-ga that a manager would take so much time squiring an employee around....or you could (more reasonably) say that we ran around SF doing public transportation to work off some excess BH energy and ensure "her guy" from NC had a good time.

It was very entertaining having the BH's top dude tell me how meaningful a somewhat mistranslated story was when I had been there to experience it.

1 - If you are very good friends and almost in relationship but not crazy attracted to them physically (sex - but not tried yet ... with them), do you look past it physically and think that everyone will eventually be old and not as attractive - go forward - or stop and just be friends.

2 - firefox or chrome.

Thanks.

603 Besides killing the thread, I did a "turn off the lights" run on the other side of the house......during which I walked into a folding door sideways. I'm not sleepy enough to hit the sack immediately, but self-preservation is adding a vote.

1. I'm guessing that you're pretty young. If you're looking at a lifetime bond, then lifetime values are primary; if you're looking at a quick fuck, "disease-free" is "really deep, man".....

2. I'm getting to the point where I hate Google with the heat of a thousand suns, but it's  up to you. I run Firefox with ABP.

611 Good Lord, I drag in this late and the ONT is still limping along. Sorry I missed the 80's TV conversation as I did not see much during the 80's. Two overseas tours during the decade as a Platoon Sergeant in both left damn little time for what junk AFRTS carried!

I was stationed at Pearl Harbor in the 80s. Saw Tom Selleck twice in the flesh. Both times were at strip clubs.

I'm betting he was more HQ Moron than not.

616 Wal-Mart tried to get into Chicago years ago.  Every "group" in the city had demands that Wal-Mart had to meet.  Unions wanted to set wages the stores would have to pay, politicians wanted pay-offs, every city government office wanted pay-offs, every race/so called oppressed group with a grievence wanted a pay-off.  Wal-Mart finally said to hell with it and built a store in a suburb, were 80% of the applications were from people who lived in Chicago.  And the town that they built in gets all the sales tax.

617 Is there no one that the Obama Administration can hire to make Michelle look respectable? Just saw the Kennedy Center thing and that teal dress. Egads. No wonder Barry was attracted to her.

618 What I want to know is how did the smoking Muser in the white shoes and pants get from the bad tired car to overlooking it on the side of the road without a smudge?
