Overnight Open Thread (12 April 2013)
— CDR M

Remember hearing that the drought and soaring hot temperatures last summer were because of global warming/climate change/whatever the hell the peers are calling it now? Um, yeah, about that. Not so much. 2012 drought wasn't caused by global warming.

NOAA asks: What caused the 2012 Central Great Plains Drought?

NOAAÂ’s answer: The central Great Plains drought during May-August of 2012 resulted mostly from natural variations in weather.

• Moist Gulf of Mexico air failed to stream northward in late spring as cyclone and frontal activity were shunted unusually northward.
• Summertime thunderstorms were infrequent and when they did occur produced little rainfall.
• Neither ocean states nor human-induced climate change, factors that can provide long-lead predictability, appeared to play significant roles in causing severe rainfall deficits over the major corn producing regions of central Great Plains.

Sex With A Robot

So morons, how many of you are part of the 9% that would have sex with a robot? 42% weren't sure if having sex with a robot constituted infidelity. I guess the question is does a sexbot equal a vibrator? They're both machines right?

F-15 Pron

By the way, the squadron in this video has been sequestered. They can only fly enough to maintain minimum pilot qualifications which is probably in the 10-15 hours a month range per pilot.

Sci-Fi Remodel

Damn, these dudes are some hard core fans. Scifi Remodel: People who have turned their homes into imaginary worlds.

Electro Shock Soccer

Give me the controls, and I could probably get into soccer. Some Norwegian TV hosts hook up a bunch of soccer players to electric shock devices to see how giving players a shock during a game affects play. The fun starts at about the 1:50 mark.

Public Education

If you have kids in the public reeducation system, behold what they might be getting taught. According to a social studies teacher at a middle school in Connecticut, the 2nd Amendment does not ensure everyone has the right to bear arms. Oh, and the Constitution is a living, breathing document or some shit.

Boibeaux’s son is an eighth grader at Northeast Middle School. On Monday his social studies teacher gave students a worksheet titled, ‘The Second Amendment Today.’

“The courts have consistently determined that the Second Amendment does not ensure each individual the right to bear arms,” the worksheet states. “The courts have never found a law regulating the private ownership of weapons unconstitutional.

The worksheet, published by Instructional Fair, goes on to say that the Second Amendment is not incorporated against the states.

“This means that the rights of this amendment are not extended to the individual citizens of the states,” the worksheet reads. “So a person has no right to complain about a Second Amendment violation by state laws.”

13 Leviathan's Children The Progressive left have a collectivist view of society where that “everything within the state; nothing outside the state; nothing against the state.” Nowhere is that more clear than their view towards people's children. The state becomes the substitute parent and becomes the one that raises children and instills its social norms and its beliefs, to the point where the state becomes mother & father (or non-gender specific parental caregiver). It conditions people towards dependency on the state, to the point where grown men and women are simply grown children, and the state is there for the elite few to take care of the dependent masses. More often, those who espouse this view have grown more bold. Melissa Harris-Perry, a pseudo-scientist and talking head at MSNBC, has boldly proclaimed that all our children belong to the collective, that is, Leviathan More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=1919

Boibeaux said heÂ’s demanding meetings with the principal as well as the board of education.

“I just don’t appreciate this as a parent,” he said. “I expect teachers to teach my kids and tell the truth – not what they think their point of view is.”

Ellen Solek, the superintendent of the school district, told Fox News they have now decided to pull the assignment from the classroom.

“It is no longer an assignment in that particular school,” she said, noting that it was an “administration decision in the best interest of the district.”

She refused to answer any questions about the content of the lesson, how it became a part of the curriculum or how many students were assigned the lesson. She also refused to acknowledge whether the school will apologize to students and parents.

“No comment, thank you,” she said.

20 So.... there's no individual right to free speech, either?

Considering that there is no Constitution at all any more . . . yes.

The upside is that you can freely ignore anything a "federal government" agent or representative says, because the power they allegedly wield derives from a nonexistent document without force or effect.

As for public school-I was reading in the Forgotten Man about the 20's "intellectuals" who wanted the world to be like Soviet Russia, and decided to start in the schools. Eleanor Roosevelt was one such educator. So this crap has been going on for a long, long time. But now we have the internet to compare stories, and shed some sunlight. Isn't that what the leftists said about the gun owners in the sandy hook shooting? The gun owners have blood on their hands, they are all guilty, the NRA murdered them, etc etc. Its the exact same logic, no?  Why are we not using the same tactic?

The pro abortion crowd is as guilty of the gosnell murders as the gun crowd is guilty of sandy hook.

79 I have a question for the tech savvy amongst the horde. Is it possible to have a shitty IP address? The reason why I ask is that is because I came home from work and fired up the lap top and my internet was slow as shit. I also found that my IP address was banned here (no, I didn't do anything to warrant a banning). I messed around with my cable modem and router until I got a new address and now everything works fine. This is the second time this has happened. Any ideas? Is it my ISP or my router that flakes out on me?

I had a cable modem that acted similarly.  It somehow lost some chip, and the tech had to reprogram it to recognize the WWW addresses (DNS Servers?).  After a few iterations of problems and solutions, they finally replaced the modem.  Problem solved for years.

Chem jeff, second the motion, change the password, maybe have the babnk stop remote access until you change acct ###.

99 79 I have a question for the tech savvy amongst the horde.

Yeah, either one could be a possibility.  Since it fixed itself with disconnecting and reconnecting the stuff my guess would be the culprit was your router.  Whenever I've had slow problems with a cable modem attempting to reset usually doesn't work and would require a call to the company and have them do a hard reset and check.

Yea, you could get a dynamically assigned one that's getting pounded by attackers or DoS'd.

Maybe the last guy to have it had a hackable NT4 machine facing the net or something and that IP was getting handed around like a $5 crack whore on all the hacker sites

123 Apologies in advance to the morons who have been on all day for repeating myself here: I went to the Friday Morning Group held by Citizens for Limited Taxation this morning. It's a who's who of republican and conservative activists and apparatchiks where they somehow get the best guest speakers and its all free. Really cool morning. Got to hear Dan Winslow's stump speech, he's a powerful speaker. I disagreed with most everything he said but it was entertaining. Next up was a Gabriel Gomez surrogate. The crowd kicked his ass to about 20 minutes but I give him props for the effort. He really has shit to work with. Then we heard from Christine Morabito who is the head of the Greater Boston Tea Party. We have our Tax Day rally tomorrow on boston common. She spent half her time explaining why they are fighting with pretty much every other group, and the other half excitedly telling us they spent money commissioning a TEA PARTY RAP SONG and that they invited lefty front group No Labels to attend. So, they're over. Jim Wallace, director of GOAL MA was there. That's the NRA chapter in MA I believe. He was hilarious. It was like one of you guys giving a talk. Only fatter. Then Chanel Prunier told us about Leah Cole's surprising victory in Peabody. They spent $90,000 and only got 36% in a three way race. But the strategy they used was sound. It was basically what I would have done. There were some other ancillary speakers who were also interesting, but by that point I was busy networking. So that was my morning. Still selling fundraising tickets over the phone. That was less interesting but more necessary.

When "new arrivals" pack 20 people into a two bedroom house, it'll add to the population quickly

LA wasn't adding a lot of new housing when I left, any development was happening either in San Bernardino or Riverside counties, or white flight to Castaic or Thousand Oaks

It wasn't a large gain, I'd attribute it to vigorous birth rates of immigrants

There is nothing better than Augusta National Golf Club in April. It brings back memories (for whatever reason) of a little southern golf outing at Keesler AFB in 1990 (MS). The golf course there runs along the airfield and the Back Bay of Biloxi. So between watching the ships sailing and C-130s doing touch and go's, it was a fun and interesting golfing. Ok, there is no comparison with Augusta National and Bay Breeze Golf course but still it brought that memory back. Plus, June-July-Aug in Biloxi is probably no time to golf but I did anyway. I was 21 and in shape. Couldn't do it now.

152 The black lists only weed out the worst of the worst.  If someone doesn't get too greedy, they can play almost forever.

All the worms/trojans/DoS you hear about are the ones that cause problems.  There could be hundreds of others out there that show some restraint and don't trip any flags.

Most of the cable/DSL boxes have firewalls that make you pretty invisible to IP and port scans unless you explicitly opened up some ports, but if someone latched onto the IP previously without a scan, then they can hammer your router box.  If the bot doing that hammering is too stupid to notice the IP isn't responding, the shit'll just keep flowing.

Back when I was using dialup, it was weird -- literally within seconds of connecting, the inbound hack attempts would start.  They were probing the crap out of dialup IP ranges.

Alton @ 176

I went through Ann Arbor last May on the drive home from Grand Rapids (business with the team at my company), and we were driving all over town to find some place to eat that my boss remembered from his youth.  We ended up at Zengerle's Deli  (which I guess is sort of famous).

Only time I've ever been there.  Didn't seem that there were too many Zombies out, but it hadn't gotten dark yet.

201 I'd be fine with taking territory anywhere in the world. But history says the farther and less connected with the mainland, the better the odds we give it away again after taking it. Pretty much all of North America is rightfully ours. It's in the name for crying out loud. All of Canada lives within shouting distance of the US border. They all want to be Americans, they just won't admit. Their basically parasite neighbors mooching our wife and watching TV through our windows. So just annex the bastards and be done with it. We'll still let em play hockey and eat at their Tim Horton thingies. It'll just be more efficient with fewer countries.

Bleach is a ca. 3% solution of sodium hypochlorite in water. Would a 3% solution of sodium chloride in water have any special refractivity? The refractive index of sodium hypochlorite is not that significant. This is bullshit.

Btw, "refraction" != "emission."

Lenses refract (i.e., bend) light. So does water. That's totally different from emitting light.

Refraction involves bending light incident upon the refractive substance, i.e., light that comes from somewhere else. Emission means the light originated in the substance. Totally different.

If you don't have any open ports on the cable/DSL box and and the machine looks invisible to a port scan, probably not.  I've put NT4 SP3 machines facing the net on my DSL box and they didn't get whacked.  Start surfing around with an ancient browser on a machine like that and there could be problems though.

Gibson's got a pretty easy to use port scan test online at www.grc.com

Posted by: Jean at April 12, 2013 07:45 PM (S4AQU)

324 Do the batteries consume the energy or does the light consume it?

A certain amount of any battery's power is dissipated in internal heat generation cuz there's like chemical reactions and shit going on to produce the lectrons that's gonna generate the photons in the bulb.

You'd hope the bulk of the battery's power makes it to the bulb though...

...BUT, I took apart a 14.4v Black and Decker flashlight after all my 14.4v B/D batteries died and I was divesting from that tech.

The bulb was actually a 12v flashlight bulb and they'd wired up an ordinary resister in series with it to knock the voltage down so the bulb wouldn't burn out being fed 14.4v.

So on that B/D flashlight, the bulb was a heater sucking juice, AND the resistor was a heater sucking juice.

@BCochran,

Things that didn't help my not getting into Medical School.

I'm interviewing at the University of Nebraska (which is in Omaha for Medical school.)

My wife is studying at Creighton at the time, so I had been to Omaha before.

They ask "Are you going to visit the zoo?"

I respond "Well, I'm from St. Louis, which is one of the top ranked Zoos in the country, and it's free, and there's lot of other stuff I love to do in Omaha, so I think I'll pass and do the other stuff my wife and I love to do."

They seemed mortally offended.

I mean my god, why would I pay $10/person to see a zoo that's just going to make me go "meh."

(I even skipped the San Diego zoo when I was out in Cali in favor of Universal Studios Theme park.)

373 Since I just got done reading Ace's Keurig review and now have coffee on the brain, do you know what the worst part of John being in intensive care was? Besides the obvious, of course. The coffee the hospital provided used a machine that added hot(ish) water to coffee extract. Twice the acid and half the flavor of bad coffee (and I know bad coffee 'cause I've made my share of industrial coffee for large groups). Know what was worse? I drank the stuff anyway instead of paying $1-a-cup in the cafeteria.

396 If it's a cable modem, it's going to be getting the ip address, not the router. That's how Charter and Comcast configure them. If it's dsl, it's possible the modem is bridged and the router is getting the ip. (That's how we configure where I work.)

at any rate, you tend to have a lease on a particular ip, so it will try and renew with the same ip address, even if you cycle it. I've talked to people dealing with someone hacking into their system, that tried to release an ip and couldn't. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Make up a story about the modem and ask them to replace it. I can't think of any reason why the company wouldn't.

Now, if someone would only explain to me why you can go for an hour without any calls on a Friday night, and someone will always call in 5 minutes before quitting time, wanting you to walk them through reconfiguring their router.

I hate the approach of teaching chemistry by starting with the fucking wave equation. That is used to systematize and provide a framework for thinking about chemistry, but is not itself chemistry. Chemistry is about things that are blue, that stink, that are pulled into or pushed out of magnetic fields, that sort of thing. Also, make abortions illegal for anyone who is mentally unstable. We all know how the Left worries about mentally unstable people making bad decisions and shit.

Yep. I used to have to ascend a ladder to get to the top of the crucible (ca. eight feet off the floor, ca. four feet above the lecture table) to light a strip of magnesium to start the thermite reaction, then scamper back down before I got showered with the shit flying out the top. After the reaction was roaring away - and few things roar like a few kilos of thermit mixture - I'd have to step up and press a paddle underneath the crucible to lift a nail-like valve and let the molten iron run out. (That's when I lost shirts.) A kilo or two of red-hot molten iron running out into a sand pit is damned impressive.

The guy who lectured after me was an economics prof, who used to complain that I left the lecture theater full of smoke. (Which I did.) Pussy.

Well there really are two parts to it.

The first part is the "gee whiz" part.  Seeing thermite or seeing hydrogen balloons blow up or seeing luminol reactions are really awesomely cool.

Then there is the "why" part.  Why those things behave the way they do.

I would submit that the "gee whiz" part is absolutely necessary for creating new scientists, but nevertheless only goes so far.  You also need the "why" part.  So IMO a good introductory college chemistry class ought to have both.  Since it's college, probably more "why" than "gee whiz", but definitely both.

434 64 The way I see it, the pro choice people are guilty of all the gosnell murders. The pro abortion crowd murdered all those babies, gosnell was just the tool.

I agree with everything except  your last sentence. The pro-abortion crowd  *IS* guilty of the Gosnell murders because abortion is MURDER in every case (a  scant percentage is to save the life of the mother); WHEREAS the 2nd Amendment is NOT used for murder 100% of the time -- it is usually self-defence (i.e. pro-life) or hunting. A scant percentage is used in actual murders.

455 Hey, here's some advice based upon recent DVD watching.

If they decide to make a new series based on the old 60's Lost In Space show, and you guys want to try out for the role of "Narrator," remember this:  in your voice-over work audition, you must include the words "unaware," "incredible," and "alien."  It doesn't matter what you say after that, as long as the word "undocumented" isn't in the script.  That might be awkward.

456 We keep having wars and not getting any goddamn territory. Fuck that. Next war get some freaking land. America should immediately. 1) Take the Bahamas. Might take a half a day max. 2) Baja California. Americans like waterfront property. This give tons. It'll be Florida West. We could seize it in a day. America's Tail. 3) Alberta + BC. Capture the oil and chicom spies in about a week. 4) Cuba. More waterfront. Waterfront is good. That'd be a good first few months. Leave the rest of Canada and the Carib for later. Posted by: Flatbush Joe at April 12, 2013 10:58 PM (ZPrif) We also should really have all of Mexico north of Mexico City. Also Panama. Too important to be left to the Panamanians. 480 297 Must-see video documentary on Gosnell at Gatewaypundit.

There is nothing to do but fall on your knees and pray.

Posted by: PJ at April 12, 2013 11:37 PM (ZWaLo)

My prayer today  is  that these murdered babies will not have died in  vain; that God will use them to open the eyes of those who have wilfully blinded themselves  to  the horrors of abortion;  that their brief lives will bring   people to  repentance and seek God's forgiveness.  And then, for the information to get out  that the POTUS  is on record FOUR times supporting this very thing.

If people hear this story, hearts will change. A local reporter (@jdmullane)  posted on twitter today:

"Sat through a full day of testimony at the Kermitt Gosnell trial today. It is beyond the most morbid Hollywood horror. It will change you." and "It's as bad as it gets. It would change minds on the abortion issue if it were covered wall to wall."

If people start questioning this  "sacrament" of the Left, maybe they will question of things the Left supports, too.

I pray this leads to revival. We are overdue for one.

490 If I were to build a giant ball of pure iron 1.4 solar masses across and slung it into the sun, would it poof?

umm...

well let's see...

mass of sun: 2e30 kg
so, 1.4 x mass of sun = 2.8e30 kg Fe
latent heat of fusion of Fe = 272000 J/kg
energy output of sun in 1 s = 3.8e26 J
so if 2.8e30 kg of solid iron is flung at the Sun over the duration of 1 s, it would require 7.6e35 J to melt it all
since the Sun does not produce that much energy over the course of 1 s, it would instead collide with the sun, imparting a certain amount of kinetic energy to the sun equivalent to the remaining solid mass of Fe and the liquid Fe
this of course neglects the nuclear reactions that might take place
the bottom line is, it would be bad for the Sun

Thermite, how does it f**kin' work?

Iron has considerable affinity for oxygen coordination (to form various iron oxides, most notably rust), but that affinity is as practically nothing compared to that of aluminum for oxygen coordination.

So elemental aluminum + iron oxides --> aluminum oxide (Al2O3) + elemental iron, in a reaction that release a cubic shitload of heat.

Incidentally, this is one reason that aluminum smeltering is so energy intensive, and in turn why recycling aluminum is one of the few economically worthwhile recycling initiatives: ripping the oxygen out of aluminum oxide takes enormous amounts of energy. That's why Al plants are located next to hydroelectric dams.

Government's job is to create social order. That is the root of Conservatism. AN orderly society guided by a godly government is what Conservatism whishes to achieve.

If Rick Santorum was the nominee last year., he would have won. 10 Million Whites who did not vote would have came out. By rejected Santorum who was sent by God to save us, America sealed its doom.

Social Issues are the most important.

You can install a replacement drive fairly easily if you're comfortable with such things. They're down for maintenance right now but ConsoleSource will probably have the unit available for order.

The latest rumor has it that Microsoft is looking to offer an Xbox Mini, a shrunk down 360 with no optical drive focused on downloads and streaming. If connected to the new high-end console, likely via an HDMI passthrough, it can run 360 disc games by using the other machine's drive and passing the data over the network channel within HDMI. Supposedly this setup allows a single controller to work with both to reduce clutter. This may also lead to a bundling arrangement with both units in the same box.

If they can be connected over gigabit Ethernet, it may be possible to have the units in separate rooms and play games for either platform on both of them.

Just a rumor at this point though.

693 Ray Sist, savage peasant at April 13, 2013 01:43 AM (CuDT2) So what about a .177? There is a "scale" factor that must be considered. Impact energy and impact energy are still important, but if the projectile diameter is small enough, then the projectile acts like a nail, and tends to go through the target, rather than transfer its energy. If the projectile can be guaranteed to mushroom, then that extends the caliber's target-size (and distance) range. .177 is good for squirrel, but something larger, like javalina ... no. Move up to something like Cape Buffalo, and, yes, a .223 should still work, but only to the head ... and even then, there's a lot of uncertainty. .30-06 is better, but still ... .416 Rigby is a much better choice.

Then they said I had to have an interpreter box (this was so they could charge me more for basic or piss me off and quit or upgrade I think)

Okay, (btw all this time, they NEVER announce shit on the TV about what they were doing. They said they sent out flyers (geniuses with digital comm and using dead trees) but I never got one) so I go get my digtal box.

It's clunky and ugly and it has a separate remote plus I have to use a special thingy to transfer the signals to the tv ????? how funking retro is this shit?

Hook it up and voila; doesn't work (and I'm no slouch when it comes to troubleshooting and jury rigging electronics.)

Take it back and start to get replacement and the clerk is some dumbass temp (I felt sorry for them they weren't trained well and had to ask someone else what to do every other question) who can't figure out what needs to be done to take the bad one and give me a good one so I said fuck it, I quit. Cancel the cable.

That starts ANOTHER whole deal of how to do that with their (I'm so sure it was fast and easy to use. NOT) customer service software program.

Finally get a receipt for the box and a cancellation notice. Made sure I got one in case they tried to charge me for another month saying I hadn't canceled.

Took 3 months to get refund and had to complain for that. They said they had to have the equipment checked. I said there is not equipment except the cable wire at the pole. They said they had to check that before they issued a refund.

Fuck CUMCAST with a pineapple sideways on an extensible meat hook.

Been a year now and I rarely even think of something I would like to watch.

Fuck em fuck em fuck em.

Lately Verizon is making noises I don't like. They've told me I can't upgrade my setup without taking on a voice channel also (I have dsl only) and they've raised the price twice in the last year.

It's like they want me to GTFO or upgrade. I guess their last cave in on the contract to the Communist Workers Union was too expensive.

Bastards. And I can't find anyone to supply just dsl in my area.

I'm almost ready to cut them off too and go use the Library when I need to go online.

Fuck them too. (not the library)

I would go even bigger. Maybe a .458 Winchester Magnum.

The argument in favor of the Rigby sort of falls apart with modern loads and rifles.

Supposedly the recoil of a .458 or a .460 Weatherby isn't even noticeable when the target is a charging cape buffalo.

.204 ruger is very popular now. I agree with .223. Usually cheap and available.

I have been reloading 6mm in 65 grain Vmax at about 3500 fps. Turns ground squirrels inside out. The Barnes varmit grenades really explode, but I dont find them as accurate.

745 CBD: The .458 Winchester is larger, yet slightly less powerful, than the .416 Rigby. I'd go with either. My point about larger rifles was more of a "use enough rifle +10%" when hunting. CBD's #708 is exactly correct; hunting with just enough rifle strikes me as cruel and pointless; if you need food, then do it right the first time.

(I got this Purp)

Look, whoever you are, whatever you are; give it up. You're busted. You don't comment here or any other site that is anti liberal (I think that's the best way to describe us all) on a regular basis.

Why because YOU ARE a LIBERAL. You're just trying to pull a Killgore Trout on us by saying bad things that look weird or biased or racist or just stupid to make the normal people who comment here look bad.

You drop a few stupid statements that make no sense (because you have no clue what being anti liberal means or what or how we say things. You just frame the statements with what you THINK we would say or what someone else (more likely) thinks we would say and repeated that to you) and try to evoke a response where by you can say more dumb shit.

You really are piss poor at this trolling gig. What? Did you whack off too much today or did Mom catch you and now you're bored cause you have to not whack off until she goes to work at the diner so you decided it would be fun and clever to come bait the "conservatives" in their den and then run back to your regularly scheduled online circle jerk to laugh and giggle about how clever and cool you and your fellow masturbators are compared to the wing nutz over at the HQ?

Either shut up and listen, maybe you'll learn something (doubtful) or go away. You're not going to get the effect you wanted and you really are annoying. Plus we're all lauging and giggling to ourselves on how much of a bad job you are doing at this.

At least do some research and observe how real anti liberals talk and what they talk about before trying to use some canned version of what you think they'd say.

You're pathetic, sitting there with in your jammies with cheeto crumbs down the front, empty munchy bags strewn around on the concrete floor on that moldy old couch mom wanted to get rid of and that you're "friends" (I.E. kids who need a hangout when skipping school or when they want to get high or feel up their girlfriends (which you don't have) and who know you worship them and will do anything for them so you let them use your "place"/"crib" to come hang out) dowsed in beer and cum and who knows what else.

BTW those "friends" of yours? Have they tried to get you to do stupid stuff to be accepted by them yet? Maybe ask for a handy or a circle whack with you as pivot man? They'll get there eventually you know cause they have nothing but contempt for a despicable little dweeb like you who has no real friends and no real life except what little dregs fall by the wayside when your "friends" come over.

One day you'll wake up with a bad taste in your mouth and a wet ass and realize that they were only using you. Like a used tissue.

Don't you just want to scream at the injustice of it all? How you're such a sensitive and caring guy and yet all the girls sneer and mock you while going out with (that means fucking them) the guys who don't care about them and just use them for amusement. Unlike you're sensitive self?

I could go on but the terms and conditions in force here and my respect for Ace prevents me from fully revealing you're coming future.

Posted by: The Jackhole somewhere on Ventura Highway at April 12, 2013 10:31 PM (/7Xis)

763 There's a lot of overlap between the two, in commercial loadings, but the .416 sticks out just a little at the higher end. But the larger area of the .458 might transfer energy to the target faster than the .416, generating a quicker kill. Having neither the desire to go to Africa, nor to hunt Cape Buffalo, I can only rely on reloading manuals and anecdotes ... and the belief that "More is Better" in this case.

767 I shot a mouse with a .38 once. Dumbest, most dangerous thing I've ever done. (and I've been in a few tight spots)

I went bug fuck over this little bastard.

Seems he liked the dogs dry food and at night would transport it from the dogs dish to his hiding place. (and unused section of vacuum hose as it turned out)

This would wake me up and keep me up. Finally one night I said "that's it mf'er" and went after him.

I had an old Ivers Johnson .38 revolver. Grabbed  that and went hunting in the kitchen.

Finally cornered him under the stove and when I poke at him he ran out and I shot point blank in front of me. (shudder when I think of it) I got him but I could killed my self from a ricochet or a bullet into the gas stove (yes I said gas) (I did mention this was the stupidest thing I've ever done didn't I?)

Tossed him out back and that was that. Since then D-Con is my friend.

I scare the shit out of my self sometimes when I think back on that now. Then I didn't even think (obviously) about what I was doing.

I know I have more empathy for the guys you hear about going off for some trivial reason and ruining their lives forever. I know what that's like.

Dead mice can be stinky lil fuckers.

See they even are annoying when they're DEAD.

They're like, like, like TROLLS!!!

I don't lay traps because I forget to reset them and then the bait gets moldy and smells or the mouse smells.

I once spotted two of them dying on my patio. Seems they had just ingested the poison and were on the way to mouse hell. They were moving like in slow motion. Pathetic. I almost felt sorry for the lil buggers.

Bitter clinger,

When I lived in St Paul in an old house, the mice would somehow make it up to my 2nd floor apartment, and when they found the wild rice and made little mouse turds in the remnants, that looked just like the wild rice, I had to do something, so I used the D-Con bait. Then I left to go up north fishing and hunting for the weekend. One of the little bastards died in my kitchen drawer amongst the utensils and BOY did he stink up the place!

I almost felt sorry for another that was doing that slow death crawl across the floor, but only sorry enough to pick him up and throw him outside to die.

Posted by: alamogordo at April 12, 2013 11:02 PM (HUTO5)

782 I still like my DCon. I just have to remember to put the stuff out in the fall. (they usually come in during the winter through the crawl space and then up the pipes.)

All I have to do is check the boxes and refill.

I even had one chew it's way into a box.!!!!!

If I put down Dcon soon enough, they die outside before they get comfy upstairs. So there's no stink inside. and Outside, I don't care.

Buggers.

they are on my list. I am pretty easy going and try not to kill critters unless I have a good reason. (I don't object to anyone else killing though)

3 critters are on my list of "shoot on sight" (well maybe not that)

Cockroaches
Mosquitoes
Mice

I won't even go after a fly unless they start bugging me (swidt although technically they're not a bug)

They always eventually do though and then *swat*

The critters on my "list" get instant service.

Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at April 12, 2013 11:05 PM (Kpn/z)

783

Oh Mosquitoes are the worst. I get almost psychotic (well not almost) with those buggers.

I don't shoot them either, but I am pretty good at the killing thing with those.

Another thing I hate is when the ants find the way up the tree to the hummingbird feeders. I know they are just little sugar ants, but I sure do love washing them down the drain when I rinse the feeders off.

785 Here's a medical tip for y'all:

Ever get a bloated feeling in the stomach? Not quite heartburn but close and you don't feel well and sometimes it can even give you heart rhythm problems?

Besides an antacid or ion reducer, try acidolphilus or some of the other gut bacteria sold commercially.

I take certain meds that tend to reduce the gut bugs and when they get low, my stomach gets cranky. Take some of these and restore healthy flora to your stomach and intestines.

it eff'ing WORKS!

I left him there to die and went back to bed. The next morning, he was nowhere to be found. A day later the little bastard ate into the water line behind my dishwasher and caused a waterfall of problems in the basement level. I hate those little bastards, I should have used a real gun.

And, BunkerintheBurbs, this is also why one should have cats around for the hunting they can do if you don't feed them too much and keep them fat and lazy. Of course, I think they even will hunt if they are fat. Just can't keep them too lazy I guess.

I have a dog that will also hunt and eat mice. He's a very good boy, and his name is Duke, ala John Wayne, because he has that little crease between his eyebrows.

Posted by: alamogordo at April 12, 2013 11:15 PM (HUTO5)

789 I understand that the mice are just doing their thing.

Trouble is the thing they're doing is my house. And my sanity.

They have no clue how batshit crazy I can get if pushed.

If they stay outside or even in the crawl space, I don't care. When they start eating stuff or tearing up my books or making noise or stinking up the place or leaving their little pellets O joy around, then WHAMO.

Death From Above.

I'd get a cat but the place is too small for a cat box and I can't let them roam. (besides what's the point of a free range cat?) And dogs are a whole other problem and won't solve the meeses.

Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at April 12, 2013 11:16 PM (Kpn/z)

790 In my experience cats cause far more problems than they solve. How the hell has the ONT devolved into this so early tonight? Did the NorKs nuke the west coast?

I just recently viewed some vids shot inside "NORKSVILLE"

a kid dying in the street from starvation?...Or maybe a false flag progrom to tear-up the western world's purse strings once again? Seems like a regular cycle yet they have added the "Nukey-Nukey" we mean business meme this time around.

Really now, it is the NORKS after all...

What worries me is how much the water-boy media on this side of the pond is shoving this in our faces 24/7.

What is "Jug Ears" up to now?  Pay attention to what my left hand is doing while I shuffle these here shells......now which one is the "pea" under?

Jus askin....

809 I've always said, given Obama's home state, he's a South Side Chicago street hustler. Doing a 3 card monte grift on the corner of State and 95Th.

Everything he says is a lie. Every promise he makes, he breaks. Every chance he gets he hurts the US. At every turn he steals money and gives it to his pals (or those pointed out to him as worthy).

He's a low class no class tool. He's a drug addled puppet being manipulated by moneyed interests here and overseas.

Anyone who thinks he's misguided or misinformed, is a fool or worse.

Given "Jug Ear's" masterful "Election Deception" of 2012...(even Al Gore had to give him the nod for doing him one better)...those of us still shaking our heads in absolute disbelief this many months since are now sitting up and taking notice of how many of our fellow citizens would prefer the teat of guberment bondage to freedom.......The "Boomers" were too busy chasing that brass ring of money and an early retirement to notice who was slipping into their school boards and their local city politics....now look upon our generation's harvest...O'Bama, Clinton, Kerry, Hagel,.....and the entire of the "Murder'ers Row!"

If a "violent" re-set is in the offing..The "Boomers" should be the one's to take the first shots and be the first to fall for the cause....that's the very least we can do...after all....we dug this fetid hole....did we not?

Ok. When I am elected President, you are my SecDef. That's just the kind of overkill I want.

816 When I was very,  very little my parents lived in a house with an outdoor toilet (not that uncommon in postwar Indianapolis).  Next to their property was a bakery and thus rats started migrating over.  My mother went out to use the facilities and there were rats in the toilet.

So my dad went out and shot them with his service revolver from WWII. He killed the rats but the place looked like Swiss cheese,  there were so many holes.

He started work on putting in indoor plumbing the next day.

819 #816   He was a great a really funny guy!  When he got old they had moved to a semi-rural property where he had a pick-up truck with a horn that played the beginning bars of "Dixie."  The neighbors had rats in their barn and my dad would shoot them with a 22.

Whenever he got one,  he would put a Mickey Mouse sticker on the side of his truck,  like the "kill" stickers on fighter planes during WWII.

HA!

829 "Whenever he got one, he would put a Mickey Mouse sticker on the side of his truck, like the "kill" stickers on fighter planes during WWII."

When I was younger and less cautious, I bought a couple of stick on Japanese rising sun flags and put them on the door of my F-150.  One was to commemorate a Honda (We were in stop and go traffic and the guy in front of me jammed on his brakes.  I stopped in time but the guy behind me in the Honda didn't.) The other was for a Nisan Sentra (A guy in a truck waved me into traffic making a left just in time to pull out in front of the Sentra.  That is the last time I ever trusted anybody to wave me in when I couldn't see.)  In both cases speeds were not too great and the truck didn't really suffer much noticible damage but the Japanese cars were pretty messed up.

It later occurred to me that cops did not look favorably on someone boasting of their multiple traffic collisions.

830 @zsasz 23 Sad to say, it was not 5-4. I got yer penumbras and emanations right here: Griswold v. Connecticut, 381 U.S. 479 (1965) By a vote of 7–2, the Supreme Court invalidated the law on the grounds that it violated the "right to marital privacy". and here: Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113 (1973), is a landmark decision by the United States Supreme Court on the issue of abortion. Decided simultaneously with a companion case, Doe v. Bolton, the Court ruled 7–2. Lost a bet with My Wife The Prog on this, so I remember.
