I hope Chile helps us out on this. The Argie Bargies always did have a populist fascist streak. If they get those islands they'll be looking for the next convenient grievance.

33 Repost.

Well its official the Jackson, MS gun show is a bust. Line out the door extending past 100ft. Next door was a bridal show. Hope people did not get the two confused, one will require you to surrender your weapons you know. Even driving in could spot the gun show newbies, sign with arrow said 'Gun Show' so that is where they pulled in while forgetting, as they roamed that little area, there was a giant parking lot just a bit further.

So endure the line and I swear I had Pvt. Pyle behind me. All he could talk about was Basic and being issued an M-14 if he was not talking Fox News and abortion. Was very tempted to turn to him and yell "Private Pyle what is your malfunction!" but I resisted and just shuffled through paying my $7 fee and escaping inside.

Or so I thought. That floor space was packed and then packed some more with people, weapons, bags, and baby strollers. I felt like I was threading through some dangerous jungle path except here the weapons were unloaded, just had to avoid someone spearing me with their slung rifle.

AR-15 prices were of an interesting range. These are all basic model prices I am quoting. None with scopes. I saw prices range from a low of $995 going all the way up to a staggering $3,000. Most were in the $1,400 range. One dealer had a sporterized 1917 Enfield in 30'06 with scope for $475. Another dealer had an Italian 6.5 rifle but the folding bayonet was missing, also had a chromed Arisaka without Chrysanthemum.

Only one table area was really dealing ammo. When I was there just before 1pm, he was well nigh picked clean. Some boxes of .45 and shotgun shells were left. He said in the first two hours he was cleaned out and had to go back to warehouse. Another table had some ammo but the brands I had never heard of. 9mm 115gr FMJ by Berry - 1,000rds for $100. Who is Berry? I passed.

I spent $7 to get in and then spent nothing inside. And after 30 minutes I was done and left.

It works by spotting the Argie navy as it leaves port and ensuring that said navy ends its mission with a close inspection of the ocean floor. Preferably before it arrives at the islands this time.

It's one day at a time hopefully lots of times.....

of course I have been sober 12 years and 5 months.

I am not qualified I try to be a decent layman.

I am happy to hear your brother's productive recovery strengthened him to do god's work though, there are few things on Earth more powerful than a good preacher.

103 Not really sure what the Brits could actually do if Argentina decides to retake the Falklands. While Argentina doesn't have much of a navy, the Brits have really depleted the Royal Navy. Argentina will have air superiority since the Brits don't have an aircraft carrier that is capable of providing air superiority. Obama will probably feed intel to the Argentinians, the exact opposite of what Reagan did 30 years ago.

152 Unfortunately I think that the Fauklands will be given over to the Argentinians fairly soon. The administration clearly wants to side with the Argies and say "F You" to the brits, and no doubt the UN will happily go along. A few facts about Argentina's "claim" to the Falklands: There are no people native to the Falklands. When Europeans discovered them, they were uninhabited. There are also no native animal species. Chilean soil is almost as close to the Falklands as Argentina and even the area of Tierra del Fuego was hotly contested between the two countries as late as the 70s. At the time of the 80s Falklands war, the islands had no paved roads outside of the capital, Stanley. Its population is less than 3000, 70% are the most British of British subjects. They do not want to be Argentinian citizens and it appears would leave the islands if it changed hands. In fact, it has very little value at all. There seems to have been a commercially viable oil find, but it doesn't appear to be too lucrative. What the Falklands are is a convenient rallying cry for a nationalistic government.

163 Let's see if the formatting works ... I came across this UK OB earlier today: Armed Forces 1982 2013 Personnel: 320,000 160,000 Ships: Carriers 2 2 (Assault/Helicopter) Assault ships 2 2 (Assault/Command) Submarines 32 9 Destroyers 15 7 Frigates 46 13 Ice Patrol Ship 1 1 Hydrographic survey ships 12 3 Patrol ships/craft 15 4 Minesweepers and minehunters 29 15 Minehunters Royal Fleet Auxiliary 45 10 Total 201 66 Aircraft: 400+ 130 The British vary between 49% and 33% strength of 1982. Missing are the Vulcans, so heavy bombing is out. I didn't look up Argentinian strength; their money is still worthless, their government is still corrupt, oppressive and socialist, and they still produce F1 drivers. Strategic surprise is lacking. The British have significant airpower at Port Stanley, and barring the loss, somehow, of the runway, support facilities, and/or enough aircraft, they have a significant advantage. The 25 de Mayo is unlikely to sortie (if it still can); too many (i.e., more than 1) British subs. Perhaps sending a few companies of Challenger 2 tanks might make a sufficient statement, and add significant firepower, certainly enough to duke it out with any Argentinian ships trying to land troops / shell land targets. Will the Args make a military move to reclaim the islands? My guess is that the bulk of the oil and NG in the area is off the Argentine coast, in Argentinian / International waters ... this will be verified in about 10 years, and everyone will look back and ask "why?"

202 Madness? This Is AMERICA! The exploitation of the tragedy of Sandy Hook has reached a new low. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, spawn of a previous leftist New York Governor, is calling for massive anti-Second Amendment measures. Cuomo seems to believe that guns are only good for hunting and that “no one need 10 bullets to kill a deer.” He has gone so far as to declare that “Confiscation could be an option. Mandatory sale to the state could be an option.“ Ultimately, Cuomo pleads for us to “end the madness now.” Madness??? THIS IS AMERICA! More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=1165

213 hope Chile helps us out on this. The Argie Bargies always did have a populist fascist streak. Actually, fascism is breaking out all over. Note the nationalism with the Jackie Chan comments. My theory is that the selfish nature of socialism means that, when you run out of other peoples' money, you start blaming others for taking away "your" hard-earned welfare.

But remember, once your on that list, you're always on that list. They know where you live. They know who your kids are. They have your health records, your prescription drugs. They have your phone calls, if you're looking for boy-prostitutes or illegal drugs. They have your card records, travel records, bank account. There's a really good chance they have your computer. 270 140 That is phenomenal by Ruger. Everyone go do that right freaking now. The US government is required to log every single piece of constituent/comment mail. My first job with the Forest Service was logging those damn comment cards from the Sierra Club etc over the Clinton roadless initiative. I spent four months doing nothing else but writing down unique sender and side of the issue. The only thing that matters is the letter hits certain points and has a unique sender. So multiple letters sent from a unique sender only count as a single response. The same letter sent by a million unique senders counts as one million responses. It's how environmentalists game the system. Ruger has someone very smart working for them.

Posted by: Cheri at January 12, 2013 11:04 PM (EAgmr) If Chile jumps in, I could see a continent-wide war breaking out. Bolivia would jump on Chile with the help of Venezuela and Ecuador, which themselves might jump on Columbia. If they have initial success, than I could see Brazil joining in and dragging Paraguay and Uruguay with it, in order to remain BMOC (big man on the continent). Peru, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guyana will probably try to hide. If that happens I could see Niceragua go after Hondouras and/or Costa Rica (the later does not have a military)... with Cuba helping out. Obama will probably do what we all expect him to do. Many Caribbean islands will become communist as a result. This wouldn't end well...

They are *almost* everything they are claimed to be. They aren't stiffer than a full-diameter bull barrel, you know, outside diameter of the fluted part. They *are* stiffer than a barrel of the same *weight* and a smaller diameter. i.e. they lose less stiffness than just turning the barrel down to a smaller diameter. But without changing the material, they're not stiffer than before the material was removed, because physics.

Bull barrels are used in most range competitions but they aren't handed out to ground pounders hell even snipers chose the lighter weight depending on mission.

I love this part, Reid's assistant yelled at TFG: Not even President Obama has escaped the wrath of ReidÑor, to be more precise, that of ReidÕs minion Krone. As Bob Woodward recounted in his book on the debt-ceiling negotiations of 2011, The Price of Politics, Krone traveled with Reid to the White House that summer during the intense debate over extending the debt limit. In the Oval Office, Reid began explaining the outline of a $2.7 trillion debt limit extension before turning it over to Krone to explain the details. ReidÕs plan included another round of defense cuts that John Boehner and Mitch McConnell had Ã’secretly pledged to honor.Ó Obama dismissed the idea, saying he didnÕt trust Boehner and McConnell. Krone, Woodward writes, Ã’either would not or could not conceal his angerÓ at the president:

Someone mentioned it a few nights ago about dems voting for Obamacare in spite of certain electoral defeat. Republicans faced the same thing in 06 and what did we get? Nada. That's principle. Republicans caving in 06 and 08 was about maintaining position. It's one thing to squish on peripheral things its another to squish on the big stuff. See Snowe Collins Specter Hatch Graham Bennett Hagel Brown. We need to elect whoever we can but ensure they hold the line on spending guns and civil liberty. Republicans have failed on that for over a decade and its time to make them sweat over it IN PRIMARIES.

Some people see the point as trivial, I think allowing bad ideas about physics and materials to spread is not trivial. I mean, seriously, half the posts on gun boards are huge repeat arguments that are either never settled because no one tests it or they were settled a hundred years ago and no one ever checks. Fluting is a good thing, and it has advantages, but removing material from a heavy barrel of a set diameter doesn't make it *stiffer* unless, as Beto says above, you're heat- or mechanically-treating an untreated barrel. 341 Exasperated Expat at January 13, 2013 12:22 AM (gkfSV) I was horrified during debt ceiling one weekend in the summer of 2011. It was early in the day, I was getting ready to go outside to my rose garden. I had television on, Reid introduced a bill, that no one voted for, with the exception of Scott Brown, he jumped right up. Reid didn't even vote for his own empty bill! After Dodd/Frank and that I lost any bit of faith I had in Scott Brown. He lost here in MA because we do have some very conservative people that call the local radio shows that were PO'd at the many times Brown voted with the dems. If he ran as a conservative he might have kept his seat. I believe it was the most expensive senate race in the country. Scott can't be a "Scott Brown" republican as he calls it. I'm 95% sure he was the lone republican to vote Yay for Romneycare. It would have happened anyway but Romney and Brown should have stayed the hell away from it. I'm sure that the author of Romneycare did not help the R nominee this year and Christie that fat slob slobbering all over TFG in NJ didn't help! I admit I am pissed off!

I agree with you there which is why I included the 10' barrel point. Design is about function for a purpose. If bull barrels offered no advantage they wouldn't win competitions. If people didn't have to hump their rifles for miles there would be no fluting. So I guess I'm as much of a pendant as you but misread your point.

These stainless barrels that are so popular now are not particularly tough compared to a 4130 or 4340 Cr-Mo steel. In fact stainless, with the exception of 17-4 and 321 is ridiculously soft and prone to mechanical failure. It's primarily corrosion resistant and not that resistant to boot. ( with the exception of 17-4 and 321 )
The only good thing about a 17-4 barrel is the fact it can be hardened pretty damned hard due to the chromium content

I used to make barrels for Navy mini guns. We made those out of Stellite

349 Fluting is a good thing, and it has advantages, but removing material from a heavy barrel of a set diameter doesn't make it *stiffer* unless, as Beto says above, you're heat- or mechanically-treating an untreated barrel. Now it's a steaming pile of obamaspeak. I'm a firm believer Romney won the center, center left and center right but lost the right and thus the election. Until republicans everywhere have certain principles they are unwilling to sacrifice they will be road kill. If a hard core democrat can win in utah or Arkansas a hard core republican should be able to win in Oregon or New York. It's about having the courage to play your cards when they matter. 356 I'll play some more ... Barrel fluting: Lilja ( http://www.riflebarrels.com/ ) has many articles on barrel-making, and one on fluting. Generally, for a given diameter, a solid barrel is stiffer than a fluted one, in every direction. If the diameter and material thicknesses are small enough, then other factors might become large enough to make a difference. I think this might work for pellet guns, not modern rifles. For a given weight, a fluted barrel is generally stiffer, in all directions. Visualize the design effort at the CAD system, where, essentially, the material from each groove is piled up on one side, increasing the effective diameter. Once the design is settled, the specified barrel is made. The effective diameter is less than the outside diameter, as there is missing material (and therefore missing strength) that must be accounted for. The fluting does aid in heat dissipation, but not by much: .075" grooves are minimal, 2" deep grooves would really make a difference. A very much better way to increase barrel stiffness is to use a blocked barrel design: clamp the barrel (and recoil lug) between 2 custom-machined plates, so the receiver floats. connect the stock to the plates. A flexible, almost whippy, 26" barrel, in a 10" clamp becomes a very inflexible 16" barrel. The site includes an article or two discussing this design. Note that steel hardness makes almost no difference to stiffness. It does matter for strength (chamber pressure limit, etc.). A cast 1020 steel beam will be just as stiff as a forged, quenched and tempered D-2 Steel one, but given an increasing load, the 1020 beam will take a set and eventually break under much less load than the D-2 beam. To get a stiffer barrel, the material must change. Replacing steel with commercially pure molybdenum is one way. Using a steel liner in a carbon fiber tube (and managing the heat issues) is another.

412 I heard from very serious people at Aberdeen proving grounds they sabotaged the AR-10. Posted by: sven10077 at January 13, 2013 01:02 AM (LRFds) The testers loved it, it was lighter, more accurate, lower recoil, and the controls were easier and faster to manipulate. It is sad but I am hardly skeptical of that claim of sabotage.

And perhaps it could have been properly tested in field conditions without having to actually be in combat, and thus the problems with it could have been found earlier and there would have been more confidence in the weapon system by the men who had to employ it when the S hit the F.

Posted by: RWC at January 13, 2013 01:11 AM (sqp6o) Well, if you put a 7.62x51 upper on an AR-15, it won't fit, there will be a big gap at the front, and the magazines won't fit in the well. You may be looking at a 7.62x39, which is a much shorter round. The AR-15 is too small for the .308 (7.62x51). The lower receiver for the AR-10 is longer mainly because of the magazine well.

429 418 GGE,

The main problem was the Army using the wrong ammo and not wanting chromed barrels....

There's a reason I want to kick procurement in the balls for eternity and the ability to take a platform that had already been product improved for Nicaraugua and African jungle work and unjunglize it is part of it.

It's a LOT like Force XXI and then not acquiring a single infantry system from it whole....

when moonbats start in on the military being the GOP's "free shit army" i usually want to play amateur dentist, BUT the ground forces R+D and procurement follies the last 17 years has been a bit much.

I guess the main bright side is "at least we're not fucking England" who had to pay the germans to save their rifle design.

431 401 That's a valid point and probably the correct one but here's my emotional take. I have multiple articles on JSTOR who have monetized my content and research I have personally paid for is being licensed/sold without compensating me. Will you feel the same way when google books begins selling your new novel and won't even return your calls? That's what happened to my dad and his book. The only thing saving him was the juice behind his publisher and that giant class action lawsuit. We both conducted research to increase the overall scientific breadth why should a third party be getting rich over it? So some kid threw it up on the Internet so what. All JSTOR did was bribe universities and journals to close the system and share the profits they derived off free graduate student labor. Doesn't even get into the public records issue. All that does is leave even more room for graft.

436 424 RWc,

Gapping....the modern iteration of Armalite used scaled up AR-15 designs for the lower mated to the Knight Arms SR-25 upper as design baseline for the AR10b.

The AR-10 has several differences in the internal layout of the lower and a much more sophisticated gas tube set up than the modern .308 uppers.

Ar10 was designed with a built in select gas system so you could fire rifle grenades easier.

The machining was also a lot simpler, BUT also a lot more manpower intensive.

For persepctive on how much the cost of HOOAH has gone up an AR10 to Milspec in the late 50s early 60s would have cost you about 225 bucks.

441 So you can't swap out uppers on a 10. Posted by: RWC at January 13, 2013 01:15 AM (sqp6o) You can. Just not between a 10 and a 15. Rifles are short-action and long-action, so a short-action rifle can fire a .308 or a .243 or a 7mm Mauser. A long action can fire .30-06 and 7mm Magnum and .300 Win Mag. The AR-10 is a short action. Different uppers can be had for .308 or .243 or whatever. Not .300 Win Mag, too long. The AR-15 is like a super-short action - .223, 7.62x39, 6.8SPC, .50 Beowulf, pistol calibers, etc. There is actually a long-action AR made by Cobb, fires .300WM and other long-action calibers.

Yes, but it had not been used IN the Army. The brass didn't even buy cleaning kits for the damn things, even though they need to be kept clean, and then they didn't want to listen when the grunts told them the damn thing didn't work. As usual, it took a Marine falling on a grenade (figuratively speaking) to get Colt out to look at the problem, who then immediately claimed there was no problem while quietly fixing the problem. Between opening up the clearances a bit and convincing the Army to teach soldiers how to clean them (and providing the cleaning equipment), the M16 is a pretty good weapons system now.

Similar to .223 vs 5.56 being 5.56 has slightly larger chamber and higher pressures.

452 But as Sven is saying and I have said before.  The Army deliberately did things that compromised the M-16.  They changed the powder so it fouled the gas return tube fast.  Then they told the soldiers in the Republic of Vietnam the M-16 was such a wonder weapon they did not need cleaning kits.  It was nothing in the DoD that messed up the M-16 in Army service, the Army did it to themselves and got soldiers killed because of it.

478 Would that seat in a .223? I am assuming they would. Posted by: RWC at January 13, 2013 01:29 AM (sqp6o) Cartridge dimensions are *exactly* the same. The difference is chamber dimensions (tiny difference) and pressure (5.56 is higher). This means you don't want to use 5.56 in a barrel marked .223 (though it may work fine) and a 5.56 gun may short-stroke with .223 ammo with lower pressures. 5.56 ammo will almost always chamber fine in a .223, but the chances of failure to feed or failure to extract is higher. To make that better, some ammo is mis-marked (Russian 5.56 notoriously low pressure). The best thing is to get a 5.56 barrel or rechamber your .223 barrel to 5.56, because in the worst case you will chamber fine but low pressure ammo may force you to switch to a lighter buffer, which is easy.

480 Silly wabbit of a writer.  I was in GTACS.  Combat controllers embedded with Army at the FLOT would talk with the weapons controllers in our radar van to call in air strikes.  And that radar van could be as close as 30 miles to the FLOT or 100 miles.

481 Latest weird-ass anime, Ultimate Girls.

This is a satire of giant monster shows, especially Ultra Man. The monster in the first episode actually looks like a stiff costume with visible seams.

UFO Man defends Tokyo against regular incursions of giant monsters. So regular that there is a TV show scheduled around them and a fair amount of the population just ignores it if it isn't in the immediate vicinity. During one such attack near a shopping district, three high school girls, each with very different figures, decide to go to a bridge for a better view, confident that UFO Man will be showing up at any moment. He does. Directly on top of the bridge, stomping them to paste as he lands.

They awake to find themselves in a limbo where UFO Man blames their deaths on the monster and says he can restore them to life but they'll need to take up his job as they'll be taking a portion of his power. Of the three girls, one is wildly enthusiastic as she is already an exhibitionist cosplayer. The others are more reluctant, especially when they learn that the power to grow to monster size has a severe time limit whose first symptom is the gradual disappearance of their costume. The resulting embarrassment turns out to be their ultimate power source. This is a problem for the cosplayer loli girl but she makes up for it by being a very devious opponent.

There are a lot of running gags, such as the professorial TV show host labeling the girls in their combat forms by their physical endowments.

It seems to have a lot on common with Adam Warren's Empowered comics series. I find myself wondering if one inspired the other.

I'm halfway through the 12 episodes. It's worth streaming or a purchase if the price is low.

LeMay also wanted it for perimeter security at SAC bases by the ESPOs he was bothered that his boys were using the grease gun and was properly impressed by Stoner's watermelon party.

In the end ParaRescue and Combat Controllers are just as rucked as the infantry and CEs in the right circumstances.

484 448 Not necessarily the case. They have a closed monopolistic system. The only way to get noticed or keep your job is to publish in research journals then reach the pinnacle of a widely read book or memoir. The journal articles function similarly to articles in outside, backpacker, guns and ammo, etc. wherein they own the content once published. The difference being you are not compensated by the journal, except in rare cases, while the journal is able to sell that free content in whatever manner they see fit. So I published an article in Rangelands based on research a foundation I started paid for and JSTOR is licensing access to that output without compensating me or the foundation. Not for views, nit for downloads, not for prints am i compensated. They don't own the content the lead author does just like in the novel world but to make it in academia you publish or perish so they have you by the nuggets. It's a HuffPo scenario where they build an empire based on free output and then sell that output for millions and the worker bees get the biggest shaft. It's a corrupt system that pretty much mirrors the middle class situation. Work like hell pay your dues get nothing back. In this case if that kid subverting them forces them to change the structure then bravo. He didn't steal any IP in my opinion all he did was put it where it was intended. A place for everyone to benefit.

Posted by: DAve at January 12, 2013 09:40 PM (XDC0v)

487 Young's modulus is in the equation to allow the guy using the equation to specify steel, or aluminum or brass, or ... to see how much the beam actually deflects when the beam material is changed.

Young's modulus is the amount of elasticity during plastic deformation of a material. Hardness greatly effects this. I can make a steel beam hard and it will hold more weight but likely fail catastrophically if that weight is exceeded . If I increase it's elasticity or malleability it will bend sooner and the the tensile strength will take over since now one side of the beam is in tensile load and the other is in compressive load. As a general rule harder steel (steel being a very generic term) has higher tensile strength. Once any rod bends there are tensile loads applied.

Failures rarely come from one specification of a material but many.

There are some things that seem to help like a hydraulic buffer or a buffer containing powdered instead of solid weight seems to broaden that a little. Also a balanced gas system, enough barrel length before and after (dwell time) a proper diameter gas port. 'swhy midlengths are so popular, among other reasons. The buffer weight is just the easiest thing to change.

510 As a general rule harder steel (steel being a very generic term) has higher tensile strength. Yes, but the question is stiffness. How does hardness affect stiffness? My understanding, at the "firearm-level" and "bridge-level" is that Poisson's Ratio, Young's Modulus, etc., essentially do not change when steel (for example) is heat treated. I don't know about the crystal-level, and things could easily be very different. So, given a bar of cast steel, and another, identically-dimensioned heat-treated one *stronger and harder), and an increasing periodic load applied to both, both will deflect the same amount and return to the initial point, until at some point the cast beam takes a set. The heat-treated beam will take considerably more load, and deflection, until it too takes a set. But until the load exceeds the cast beam's yield point, both beams deflect equally.

My desire to alter that system in order to derive compensation for my work makes me a straight up capitalist son. Plus would a communist wear this much gray and have a Lada in the driveway? 534 But until the load exceeds the cast beam's yield point, both beams deflect equally.>>

We (as I often do, are arguing minutia) Yes up to the point of plastic deformation both are the same. But the plastic deformation range can be quite large. If it falls in the strength you need for a barrel, hardness can make a difference. The forces on a barrel are not unidirectional so hardness, wall thickness all need to be taken into consideration. Because if you exceed the plastic limit you will start shooting around corners.

539 Since barrels are back in vogue, I noticed that Stellite was brought up earlier. Stellite is very abrasion resistant but it tends to crack with a lot of heat/cool cycles. A more modern process is Melonite coating. Resists abrasion like Stellite, doesn't crack. Coated barrels last a *lot* longer than stainless or chrome-lined barrels. I think it's like $60-100 per barrel. The only reason I haven't done it to all of mine is I'm cheap and lazy. I believe it's always black in color. It's a nitrocarburizing process involving heating cycles and shit.

541 There is nothing socialist about saying I should be able do and profit in whatever manner I want with what I've created. The difference between abstract situations and concrete situations is the abstract ones haven't happened to us yet. Every author, every artist, every designer will at some point have to confront someone attempting to make a profit off if their work without permission, guidance or authority. When they realize how powerless they are in the face of that taking the only solace is in the changing of the system. Thus my desire to modify a system that is profitting from my work without providing me with any compensation. The correct term in this instance about my personal irritation with this kid screwing with JSTOR and public records EXCLUSIVELY is anarchist which contrary to pretty much everyone is not only a province of the left. 548 I missed the earlier thread, but since it's come up again, I hope it's been noted that JSTOR's claimed IP is what's known in law as a "slavish copy," not recognized in any case as property separate from its source.

Your Xerox of a Picasso isn't yours. It's his. If somebody copies your copy, tough shit for you. A guy who sells fake Rolexes can't get charges brought against you if you also sell fake Rolexes just like his. Amazingly, the law recognizes this obvious thing, even in "archival" instances. Which really pisses of The Man (e.g., JSTOR), because The Man really wants to get paid for Picasso's work. And everybody's. And not pay anybody for it. Feudal style.

That guy who killed himself, if he'd had a way to get the millions of dollars the defense/loss/appeal/repeat process would have required of him, and if he could bear wasting his whole adult life pursuing this, would eventually have had his case dismissed--because the provisions under which he was being hounded would have been found unconstitutional. Unless Roberts is even worse of a shit than he seems to be.

Seriously, did we learn nothing about what a prosecution really is this week?

Posted by: epobirs at January 13, 2013 03:00 AM (kcfmt) That euphamism needs to be used far more often. I introduce it into conversation at every opportunity, in hopes I'll be asked what it means.

I wonder what they'll call it here? Shuffling off to Buffalo?

That's fairly well-put.

Westlaw and Lexis/Nexis [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westlaw] have the same issue. They put together compendiums of nominally public records and then turn around and assert IP ownership over the original records. The problem is that governmental (pronounced "coercive") entities have allowed their proprietary indexing schemes to be used in pleadings and arguments -- so if someone created a new and better indexing scheme, there would have to be a way to back-reference it.....and the companies assert that such back-reference is an infringement on their copyright. ]

In short, the problem is not that West, L/N, or JSTOR have IP that's been "stolen", the problem is that the government gave such IP an official blessing so as to make it essential in dealing with the government and refuses to consider any reasonable workarounds....which result is solidly supported by lobbyists for their respective companies and their bought-and-paid-for legislators.

I should also point out that I am a Disney shareholder, and I find the ever-lengthening copyrights based on Mickey Mouse freakin' ludicrous. Everyone else has to live by the motto, "improve or die" -- but Steamboat Willie on a crappy 16mm print serves as the beginning of perpetual copyright?

We're long overdue for a great wave. The old-line populism of recalls and voter propositions have been completely corrupted -- the November ballot in California had 11 propositions, not one of which was honest as to the issue involved, the actual supporters and detractors, the liberties curtailed, or the public interest. We see widespread national disdain for foreign aid -- while green subsidies are far more costly in dollars, distort markets, advance ill-advised measures with horrible consequences, and are rife with corruption and cronyism -- but, hey, all that "green" shit is popular with the patchouli-scented [and steadily more antiquated] stoner crowd at Whole Foods.

It's like Instapundit says -- we could do the "right" thing, but that would shortchange our opportunities for graft.

Yea, this is bogus and completely contrary to all prior copyright caselaw regarding repackaging of public stuff.

Nobody can copyright Shakespeare anymore, but you could copyright a particular embodiment and packaging of the works, but that in no way means you have a copyright on "Shakespeare".
