Overnight Open Thread (12Jul13)
— CDR M

Confirmed. USA general knowledge is changing, and not for the better. I would love to see the questions pertaining to government and the Constitution.

Some things have been forgotten, however. That Antarctica is the largest desert on Earth (it is) was #50 on the 1980 knowledge charts. Now itÂ’s down to #249. That Franklin discovered lightning to be a form of electricity, and that Paris is the capital of France, have also slipped down the list.

The wrong answers were also quite fun. 30% of people thought Baghdad was the capital of Afghanistan (wonder why?), while 21% believed Budapest to be the capital of India (maybe they thought ‘Buddhist’?). 12% thought Mount Everest was in the Appalachians.

11% thought dynamite is called dynamite because it was invented by a Mr Dynamite, and my favourite, 7% said that the layer of fat that whales have is called “flubber”.

Military Sexual Assault

You know, for all the hype in coverage of military sexual assaults, you'd think the MSM, and their politician masters, would be as breathless in their coverage of college campus sexual assault issues. The U.S. military actually looks pretty good compared to, say, college. Oh wait, it's a Democrat voting bloc. Nope, they won't say anything close to what they've said about the military.

It's also useful to examine sexual assault rates in another kind of institution populated mainly by 17- to 24-year-olds: the civilian university. Here again, direct comparisons are impossible due to variations in the available studies, but the evidence again suggests that sexual assault rates in the military are, if anything, lower than in similar civilian settings. One major study published by the Justice Department in 2000 found that 3.5 percent of college women reported a rape or attempted rape, while an additional 15.5 percent of college women reported that they had been "sexually victimized" in some other way during the academic year in which they were surveyed. Of these "non-rape" sexual victimizations, 7.7 percent involved physical force. Another 2007 Justice Department study found that "13.7 percent of undergraduate women had been victims of at least one completed sexual assault since entering college."

College women also appear to be even less likely than women in the military to report incidents of sexual assault to the authorities. Again, the caveat here is that the available studies looked at different time periods. But while 33 percent of female servicemembers who said they had experienced "unwanted sexual contact" in 2012 said they reported the assaults to military authorities, the Justice Department's 2000 study of sexual assaults on college campuses found that only 5 percent of victims reported the incidents to college or law enforcement authorities. As with military women, the college women who did not report their experiences cited concerns about confidentiality, not being taken seriously, or being treated with hostility by the police.

So I'd like to hear from all those folks that said they wouldn't allow their daughters to join the military due to the sexaul assault issues and ask them if they are OK with sending their daughters to college.

Fappin' On Duty

Wow. Pretty ballsy move. NJ Transit bus driver accused of lewd act while driving. This comment by a passenger is early contender for quote of the year.

Metz continued, "Now you can see he reaches for a handiwipe to address the situation."

Cell Phone Taxes

I'm sure the Obamaphone users don't care. The hidden 17% tax: Your cell phone bill. See that universal service tax? That's your contribution to the Obamaphone program. You know, the program where ObamaPhone dealers are OK with people trading them in for drugs and cash.

Preferred Gender Pronouns

It would be easier to just change your fucking name to fit your preferred gender identity I would think. Preferred gender pronouns and yes, it is obnoxious.

That stars and stripes article talks about accepting cuts "in [TFG]'s budget."

WTF? That budget doesn't mesh anywhere with reality. I know for a fact it contains remarkable cuts (near zeroing) to programs that we are kinda important and couldn't sustain those cuts.

It's like Medicare and the doc fix, they make up numbers to claim a low deficit, but those numbers don't reflect reality in any way, so it has to be "fixed" and boom, higher deficit, (plus higher spending on the useless shit in TGF's budget.)

I'm all for cuts, but I also want a budget that reflects reality, not a purely political statement.

After reading the profiles of the six female jurors provided in a news story I read, I wouldn't be too worried. Zimmerman may not be convicted of second-degree murder but I have little doubt that he will be convicted of manslaughter. That should be enough to stop any riots though the decision will be a gross injustice since the evidence shows that he should be acquitted of all charges.

And to add insult to injury, the acting is très lame.

I know naught of Windoze 7, the old elf box had Xp and the lappy has Vista which lately has been very suck-ass. Lots of angst over 8 due to the whole "no start button" issue, but it does have a start page that is full of icons, it also has a desktop that you can put icons on if you want. Damn thing looks more like a cell phone than a computer if you ask me, but so far I've been able to get everything to work. I haven't been able to figure out how to close programs from the start page, so I've deleted most of the icons (and uninstalled the email app altogether).

124 The bad thing about convicting Zimmerman of any crime requiring prison time, aside from the fact that he's not guilty of anything, is that he'll require solitary confinement for most if not all of his prison sentence. That means 23 hours a day in a cell with an hour outside. This is due, of course, to the fact that he'll be killed in general population. So not only does he go to prison, he gets put in the harshest place in prison...solitary confinement.

I forgot how easy it was until I set up the Dell. It's got a big 18 inch screen and we have very large screens at work and it's just easier to use a Windows computer from another Windows computer. There are lots of websites that aren't compatible with Safari, including the one I use for payroll etc. You need a Windows computer as a backup or do personal things at the office with IE instead. I won't install Chrome on this.

In my experience, you want women jurors when Ur case is, uhhhh, shall I say counter-intuitive, less linear, less evidence in your favor.  For clear-cut cases, you want linear, logical jurors. In a self-defense case, I want macho, tough, red-blooded guys. I think this case IS clear-cut in GZ's FAVOR..so we got 6 ladies likely to focus on "poor dead kid"?!  So, in spite of a case that, if it were a football game, wd have scored Zimmerman 73, Prosecution 11, I'm still very worried.

244 "Well, actually ditto many of the "homeless". People who should be institutionalized, because they can't take care of themselves. " This was true of a son of someone my dad had worked with for years. The son had a serious disability from birth, spina bifida, and never accepted his situation. He benefited from all kinds of programs because of his disability. He had a family who did everything they could to help him. He just could not accept his limitations. He ended up living in the streets. The naive liberals from the newspaper did a piece on him all about how horrible it was that this disabled guy had to live on the streets. And, yes, the whole thing was a tragedy, but they completely ignored the fact that his widowed mother would have been willing to have him in her home, and he qualified for housing, but he refused to accept whatever rules there were for his accepting housing. Because of his disability he qualified for numerous government programs including job training and education. The misleading newspaper coverage was a nightmare for his mother. He ended up dying in the street. But it wasn't because we turn our backs on people like that, it was because he refused help.

252 Peaches, almost everyone loved being 18. I would go back to 1979, but skip 1980, that was a horrible year for me. If Time Travel were possible, i would like it possible for only a certain time, not to restart from there, if you know what I mean? Peaches, can you add prayers, yes, again, for my brother Paul? He had the infections throughout his body, then had neck surgery because bones were infected and is paralyzed. Poor guy said he's like Lazarus but isn't lucky enough to die Tuesday. Wednesday the rehab called to tell me his fever went up to 105.6, that is not a typo, he has pneumonia again or still and is septic. I can understand if he would rather be dead. He's been in the hospital or rehab since March 30. All he remembers is waking up paralyzed.

Honestly, that was exactly and precisely and in every possible way what I wanted from that movie.

As always, I love that del Toro's worlds look used.   The factories look like factories and the suits are scuffed up and the clothes are worn and it looks like a place where people actually live.   Also Idris rocked so hard that I was concerned that there would be awesome on my shoes when I left.

I would like to go back to the years 1990-1993. I was stationed in the UK and did not visit the beaches of Normandy or St. Andrews in Scotland. I'm a history buff and a golf junkie. What the hell was I doing?? (hint- drinking, working, drinking, drinking, travel, work, drinking, etc.) I travelled a lot over there. Mostly in Britain but I saw quite a bit of Europe too. I did not go to either Normandy or St. Andrews. I kick myself for that. Stupid.

He started to tell me some of the things he believed to be true Tuesday. It might be a combination of the drugs and delirium. He's not getting the care he was at the hospital and he's had four? Infections, I have notes on kitchen table, that he's had since he's off IV antibiotics. I don't think they ever killed the strep infection in his blood and that's why he has these fevers. At least Wednesday they sent him to the ER and admitted him to the hospital. Thank you. Carol

I told them that if they couldn't manage to stand for conservative principles there really wasn't much point in having a republican party at all.

Nonetheless, I and my buddy enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. We laughed, someone else in the audience cried.   Great fun was had by me, everyone else can get stuffed.

621 571 Splunge, tell me again what you like?

From overseas, in descending order: Jade 1901, Rouquette, Eduord (sp?).

In the U.S., descending order: Nouvelle Orleans, Walton Waters, Marteau, Meadow of Love, Mansinthe.

Vieux Carre is OK but a bit thin and not enough louche; Pontelier is good, but doesn't quite fit with what I like. Clandestine is the best in that style that I know of. Kubler is good enough for many purposes (including Sazerac cocktails with Rye) and cheap. St George is wacky, louches like you wouldn't believe, and makes an interesting change. Leopold is more bitter than most, but really good. I like to let the bottle sit for a year and get a bit brownish -- I think it's better when it's somewhat oxidised.

651 Hey everyone where are my pants? I need something in them and their gone it seems.

Posted by: McGregor at July 12, 2013 09:43 PM (qo244)

652 Yeah the manga could get you arrested that is for sure.  Back when a certain chain still existed called Borders I was cruising through the books and found a hard cover book on underground manga.  That should give you a clue but anyway one of the tame scenes had this nude woman doing a Slim Pickens with Little Boy out of Enola Gay.  I brought the book to the staff and said they should not have this out where the kids can find it.

The doujinshi or fan circle stuff is just as rape rape bad.  Then there are mainstream manga like Parasite.  Americans really have no idea how depraved the Japanese can be.  And why I won't watch or read a lot of stuff from there, I have been burned before and required the brain bleach.

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at July 12, 2013 09:46 PM (ZbjNO)

653 625 Tammy sans Thor,

Heh the Glock sales team knew how to party in the 80s and 90s, I am actually not overly fond of semi-autos.  The Browning Hi-Power and 1911 are simple enough I respect the design and I have a soft spot for the HP b/c of its Canadian service, the Glock struck me as too light when I was a youngster carrying. I preferred my .357 Magnum with SWCs.  Glock's come a long way, and is 1/2 the cost of the Sig P220 and Higher families which leaves a lot of budget to get serious finishing done by a police armorer I know.

Since I am not planning on trying to be "all of that" anymore it means I need to be reasonable on portion of discretionary income I use.  The Sig family are probably higher glass craftmanship out of the box, but the Glock 17 is serviceable, and has some interesting options that may help me get near form if not back to it.  The reflex sights Israel came up with are interesting.

http://tinyurl.com/o87qlz8

An added bonus is the utility of the G-17 lower being mated to a carbine upper.  Makes a good trigger job double utility.  32 shot mag in the 9mm upper with a stamped silencer would be a neat toy.

The Remington 870 needs a picatinny, and the wood furniture on it is weathered, (it's a Indiana Dept of Corrections Surplus Gun) I figure the magpul stock and butt may work out for her, and I may get the finish touched up.

For rifle I plan on using my near stock AR-15A2 with 20" HBAR or I may build the lad a Featherweight 16" Carbine Build on a DPMS Lo-Pro receiver with a 16" 1-12 twist pencil barrel and 6 position buttstock, and Hogue freefloat....

something on the lines of the Colt 608 with a flat top and picatinny gas block....

http://tinyurl.com/ojp3u65

The 16" Bore will be a necessity until I move back home or decide what to do when Uncle Sam's loving embrace is a thing in my family's past....

I don't have a problem with stamps and papers in theory but carrying a SBR, or Class III kit across state lines without being a III holder is a pain.

16" is from what I hear a perfectly serviceable length with practice, but I am old fashioned and prefer the longer pull length.

681 666 Zakn,

I bow my head in your direction sir...

665 McGregor,

I use nickle boron components when needed on my AR-builds for reliability, I also prefer the precision of the AR family and at peak was a trained infantryman with that weapon.

I'm not a weapons snob, and when younger and money was an overriding prohibitive I used an accurized SKS Sporter-D over the AK because I am not using full auto, and am not overly fond of the BATFE approved methods for non stamp legal rapid fire.

When I first left the service I could juggle a 2*4 with rapid fire.

I'm pretty sure that era of my life is long gone.

For precision shooting I prefer my Mauser in 6.5 Swede.

I move too much to be near the friends I'd need in a jam, and I have some tools but not as many as I hope to once I have a "home"...

this wandering minstrel thing is wearing on me finally.....

and right around the time in my life I am finally deeply ready to give up the wandering thing the nation is attriting liberty rapidly enough I am giving serious thought to going back to the Prairies in Canada to try to lay the groundwork for future 10077s to make honest gain without opprobrium.

I am not trying to bust your balls but you were selling the Glock 17 carbine. I wanted to know why I needed one. In a general sense we all like what we like but is that what I need. Price and ammo are big in filling the toolbox. Friends I have some but I know I'd have more with a stock of cheap SKSs  if the shit hits the fan. Just like the military there is no one gun just as it is in real life. Yes there is the best one that does many things well. And if I have to carry that one by myself I'd care. Just don't put yourself in that position. Lead is lead and it only matters if your's hits and their misses.

689 673 McGregor,

No I understand what you're saying...in saner times in our nation regarding guns I kept several SKS and Mosin Nagants and happily gave them away, but states I had thought were settled on the gun issue now have "watch lists" if you purchase more than 3 long guns in a month let alone pistols.

I have to train my son at some point, I seriously feel as though I have erred against the way the men in my family were taught in the American fashion to be good responsible marksmen as touchstones in their march into conscientious adulthood.

He's 13 and it is time, I'll probably start him out with single shots from my 6.5 Swede and work him into a loaded magwell after he is using safe weapon handling and shows an ability to respond to commands on the range....

Given the world we're in I'll probably use the bolt gun as much to familiarize him with procedure as to teach him practical shooting the way I learned.

Wife is a good instructor on BRM, I was competent at it a long time ago, and the AR perversely is as cheap to fire as all my weapons but the mosin nagant these days.

Anyway I'm drooling, it was a pleasure as always.

Y'all have a nice evening.

696 I should clarify My gun training came from my father but the first gun I owned at 12 was a Winchester 67. That my older brother got me for my birthday (think it cost him $15). That is the gun I could shoot up a gnats ass. Because I had pride of ownership and ample time to use it all by myself.

Awesome! Saw "that time of the night" and was going to link Marillion if you hadn't. I saw that tour with Fish in a small club near where I live now -- probably 20' from the stage. He came into the audience and scooped up a table candle for "a hand held over a candle in angst-fueled bravado" and sang it with his hand over the flame for an uncomfortably-long time (I don't know if there's a trick -- like licking your palm or holding a cold beer beforehand -- but it seemed very bravado, indeed).

I actually prefer Hogarth in his "gloves phase", even though they don't fit right. It's probably because his "post-gloves phase" was after Rothery got fat and Kelly went bald. Though they still sound great, their current appearance makes me feel old.

My preferred pronoun is His Most Powerful and Glorious. Using anything else shall cause me emotional pain and suffering and probably seizures and convulsions of outrage complete with foaming at the mouth.

I give you permission to use my legal proper name instead, much like Elmo the Muppet does. That would be Emperor of the World Bob. Shortening to Bob is unacceptable and once again would cause apoplexia (the condition, not my married life partner).

Just remember, if you do not cater to my every social whim, I will throw a massive tantrum to let you know you are bad and should feel bad.

737 "So I'd like to hear from all those folks that said they wouldn't allow their daughters to join the military due to the sexaul assault issues and ask them if they are OK with sending their daughters to college." But most enlistees are there to earn free college tuition. So if they serve in the military for 4 years at risk of military sex assaults, most women vets will still have 4 years or more to be exposed to college sex assaults. So one might argue that this effectively doubles the dangers of a young woman going out into the world. And your argument, such as it is, seems to support the idea that military sex assault is acceptable as long as it is lower than the college rate. But college kids are civilians. Our military is anything but. It is a regimented government organization with some very strict rules that should be enforced impartially. So a more apt comparison to military sex assaults would be internal sex assaults against police officers by other cops. Your line of argument sounded good at first but it really doesn't hold up when examined.

Posted by: stephen b at July 13, 2013 06:31 AM (ktdXd)

739 725 TooCon,

The issue is overhyped and to an extent being fostered by that command structure you denote.

When you have military members saying "don't intervene in an assault until MilPo arrives" and you create a new protected class of soldiers identified by sexual preference it is going to lead to some white noise on the issue...

add in OpTempo stress, and a power structure dynamic and the amazing thing is the numbers are not higher....

we had a simple rule of thumb when I was in "no means no Joe" and if you got too frisky the Chivalric thing to do was brain the perp....

command climate was zero tolerance...how introducing a gradated scale of assault parameters is a good thing is beyond my Jedi Powers to grasp.
