Overnight Open Thread (13 April 2013)
— CDR M

Well my old laptop finally kicked the bucket today. I had to swap to my old desktop which of course didn't have all my links so I've patched something together as best I can. I guess all that Windows 8 discussion last night just might help guide my laptop purchase direction.

Well, we had a CME impact the Earth earlier tonight. Some aurora possibilities for you high latitude types.

Go here for a pretty cool animation of a CME and how it interacts with Earth. State of the Union

In other news, English teacher ask students for essay on "why Jews are evil". On a positive note, at least 1/3 of the class refused to do the assignment. I'm sure they'll be tagged for more reeducation in follow-on classes so they won't question authority again.

Military Projects

OK, not as sexy as a laser gun, but a nice capability to have. Navy builds DDG 1000 with next-generation precision gun.

The U.S. NavyÂ’s DDG 1000 next-generation land-attack destroyer is being engineered with a stealthy, precision strike Advanced Gun System (AGS) that can pinpoint land-targets with GPS precision at ranges up to 63-nautical miles,...

I still miss the 16 inch guns on the battleships.

Bell unveils third-gen tiltrotor concept, the V-280 Valor. I don't see where the military will get funding for this puppy.

Music Video

The cello rock band Break of Reality.

They just released their cover of the Game of Thrones opening theme. It is quite good.

The Power of Boobehs

Take note moronettes (although I'm pretty sure y'all knew this already). Victim recalls assailant's breasts, little else. Moral of the story: when in trouble, flash 'em.

The woman drove away after hitting the man’s car at Haight and Cole streets at 5 p.m. Tuesday, said Park Station Officer Al Wu. The man couldn’t tell officers what kind of car it was, let alone supply a license-plate number, but he “was able to give a detailed description of the suspect’s cleavage,” police said.

So did they put out an APB for the breasts?

In related news, NYC has the co-ed topless pulp fiction appreciation society. Evidently they love to read outdoors and topless. NSFW (and a HuffPo link).

Lefties and Numbers

This explains Obama's budget BS. Left-handed people avoid using exact numbers.

14 Tonight's ONT comes pre-loaded with boobehs!  Nice.

And my question from the previous thread...

Question for the tax and accountant morons:

Four years ago, I was awarded some company stock as an award. It was a 'restricted stock' meaning I had to wait 3 years before becoming fully vested and allowed to sell them. On the day of vesting last July, the company released the stocks and withheld a portion of them to pay for taxes, leaving me with about two-thirds of the amount of stock awarded to me.

The remaining shares left to me, I sold about fifteen days later when they reached a value that I instructed the brokerage to hold until it was reached.

My question:

I'm trying to figure out the 'cost basis' for my Turbo Tax stuff.

Is it the number of shares left to me on the day of vesting @ the market price of that day minus the price I sold them at fifteen days later? Or is it another figure?

My eternal thanks to the moron(s) that can help me out.

On the other hand, those who said they sent 50 text messages or less were far more likely to care about living principled lives.

I'm not a fan of gay marriage, although I have no problem with gays (and have teh gay friends), but redefining marriage and opening the door for FLDS & Islam to say 'pony up with the polygamy', and offer the govt more of a chance to fuck with religion, no thank you. So let's settle on something civil that is far less damaging and move on to the BIG problems, instead of gay marriage which the Dems are using to distract from the important issues, despite the fact that it affects only 3% of the population. Make those fuckers dance.

Heard this on Medved's show on one of the (rare) occasions I listened to him and it didn't seem correct. So either he is ambidextrous or right handed.

Here's my 'feel good' story for the week.  A precocious six-year-old was having an ultrasound.  While I was watching the technician do the test, the girl asked me how that stick thingy with the jelly on it made the pictures.  I tried using my best age-appropriate explanation of sound coming out of the microphone only not even dogs can hear this sound, and then it bounces off your insides like when you yell in the mountains and hear your voice come back, and then it goes back into the computer and it makes the picture.

She looked at me like I was crazy, so I said,  "But some people say it is about 80% magic."

Behind me, I heard her mother's voice from the darkened room, dryly, "Yeah, and the other 20% is baloney."

Can't argue with her there.

200 180 Ok, I'm kind of sympathetic to the teacher in the story above. Reading through the article and the link, it looks like the kids were covering the Great Depression and WWII in their history class, while going over rhetoric and persuasion in their English class. The teacher tried to integrate the lessons and didn't fully think it through. Was it stupid? Yeah, it was at least a little stupid. However, at least the teacher was trying to get kids to think about how we express arguments and to think critically about what they hear.

204 Steve Sailer's a really interesting guy to read if you never have. Mainly looks at social science data and the stupid things the Left (and often the Right) says and does. He's basically just trying to understand the world around him. Plus his mind-thoughts are apparently forbidden fruit, even here. He does tackle some taboo topics -- like race. But he's pretty much the opposite of a supremacist. He just recognizes that race/ethnicity is an actual biological, genetic reality. If you can get a DNA test for it, it's real. Sailer and Razib (who's Bangladeshi) both often look at the genetic basis of ethnicity and things like that. Razib is a science blogger at Discover. If a science blogger at Discover can link to Sailer I think Ace of Spades can. I find Steve Sailer to be one of the more consistently interesting writers on the web. Plus it's always fun to read something supposedly taboo. Although anyone looking for a taboo thrill might not get much. Sailer is an interesting, but not very edgy guy. He's very calm and laid-back. No cursing. Just him writing about interesting things he's noticed or some interesting data he's come across.

266 I am truly ambidextrous. It doesn't mean you don't favor one side though. I am more comfortable writing and throwing right handed but favor the left side for kicking. I tried to teach my son to be ambidextrous but it did not work. I actually played baseball and switch hit. Coaches loved me. I figured I would teach the kid to be an ambidextrous pitcher and then be his agent. How much would a 30 game winner make these days.

At her heels ran two huge and fierce mastiffs, which followed hard upon her and ofttimes bit her cruelly, whenas they overtook her; and after them he saw come riding upon a black courser a knight arrayed in sad-colored armor, with a very wrathful aspect and a tuck in his hand, threatening her with death in foul and fearsome words."

365 EC, I will out myself as a CPA and agree with those recommending a professional. You also need to remember that you have 2 taxable events there - the vesting of the award and the sale of the stock. The tax basis for the sale is the value at vesting (which is where you need specific professional help). Good luck.

Uriah is a kickboxer and dominated the season with vicious knockouts. He sent 3 of the 4 guys he fought on the show to the hospital. Kelvin is a wrestler. Classic wrestler vs striker fight. And it shows that the striker loses if he can't stop the takedown. Uriah would have crushed Kelvin if the fight had stayed standing up. Uriah is a much better striker with both hands and feet. But Kelvin isn't an idiot, so he kept taking the fight to the ground. Uriah couldn't stop him. Close fight. Split decision.

Seems like incredibly bad judgment to me. I can think of a few zillion less volatile subjects for a student to argue in an essay. Exposure to the Nazi mentality should be saved for the History classes. An English teacher should have had no shortage of fictional villains that could be enlisted as a perspective to take on for the assignment.

I agree absolutely.  An English teacher could have asked students to provide

evidence to prove BHO is an illiterate hack with a tin ear.  Furthemore, he has

a complete inability to speak on topic without numerous verbal tics.

Instead let's trot out one of the oldest, tiredest, most destructive tropes in world

history.

I received X number of restricted shares and had to wait 3 years for them to vest.  Employer took about a third and held them to pay the taxes.  Remainder were released to me.  Fifteen days later, I sold them at a stock price which was 26 cents lower than the price on the day of vesting.

How is 'cost basis' calculated for that scenario?

Posted by: EC at April 13, 2013 07:31 PM (doBIb)

405 If it is restricted stock, the cost basis is probably zero. All of the gain as of the vesting date is considered ordinary income. Any gain or loss between vesting date and sale date is taxed at capital gains rates.

Posted by: EC at April 13, 2013 09:37 PM (doBIb) EC, If I remember correctly, and that's a big if, your cost basis should be the total amount of the market value of ALL the shares on the day they are vested to you. The difference between the cost basis and what you sold them at fifteen days later are your capital gains. The shares withheld are for the estimated taxes on additional income, granted in stock. Hope this helps.

448 If I remember correctly, and that's a big if, your cost basis should be the total amount of the market value of ALL the shares on the day they are vested to you. The difference between the cost basis and what you sold them at fifteen days later are your capital gains. The shares withheld are for the estimated taxes on additional income, granted in stock. Hope this helps.

Linda,

The cost basis works out to be much higher than the net sale figure that I received fifteen days after vesting.  Turbo Tax then makes it look like I had a huge capital gain loss of several thousand dollars, and that doesn't seem correct to me.  The huge difference between the total of ALL shares @ vesting day price and what I got out of the sale is from the withheld shares taken from me to pay for taxes.

Am I doing something wrong?

@ EC

Hey, if you're still around...

The day that those stocks became 'yours'...that is the cost basis that you use.

You're figuring Capital Gains, right?

Look up what their value was, on the day that they finally became yours.

Then, deduct that amount from your Sale of them.

That gives you your 'Gain' that is subject to the CapGains Tax.

- and washed down with some Minute Maid Cherry Limeade.

In the rons' opinion, would/should the above be classified as a (a) white trash dinner, (b) post-modernist dinner, or (c) SoCal junk food dinner?

And would love to ask others here what their all-time wackiest dinner course was.

It's simple.

You only owe CapGains on what you SOLD.

Use the number of stocks...the date they became yours...at what Value they were on that day.

That is your Cost.

Posted by: wheatie at April 13, 2013 07:56 PM (Da0Xz)

478 Here is an example.

1,000 shares, with a price of $40 on vesting date. This results in ordinary income of $40,000. Your basis in the shares is now $40.

You sell the shares 2 weeks later for $35. You have a capital loss of $5.00 per share, or $5,000.

Does that help?

The US celebs have never known the kind of confiscatory tax rate the UK had when George Harrison wrote 'Taxman.' Remember the lyric "There's one for you, nineteen for me?"

95% rate.

The thing to recall about the absurd US rates of yore that leftys pine for, is that nobody actually paid them. There were so many ways to go around it that only a fool would ever do it. A big reason the Reagan tax cuts were so effective was that a lot of the dodges and loopholes were eliminated but the new rate was so much less painful that many simply paid it.

503 That English assignment "Why Jews are Evil" doesn't seem like a bad idea to me.

Some jerkoff called "Zimriel" offered some thoughts at the Blogmocracy on why the execution of this idea was flawed. I paraphrase:

I can see two possible reasons for the exercise. One is that thereÂ’s no understanding history unless you understand the protagonists. Another is to construct an argument for a standpoint you might not believe in (so you can tear it down later).

The problem with all this is that itÂ’s an English assignment for the tenth grade. It relies too much on specific historical knowledge for this level in this department.

If this was a more general assignment on historical controversies, and some student wanted to do this as part of that, I could go with that. Same with historical-fiction. (In which event I would, however, want to know what the student was up to.)

If the next door history class wanted an essay in Nazi justifications for their anti-Jewish laws, that would imply more personal distance from the topic; this would also be acceptable.

Not how this teacher did this in this case, though. IÂ’m putting this down to clumsiness by this teacher -- tentatively. But thereÂ’s definitely probable clause to question the teacher for motive.

Posted by: boulder toilet hobo at April 13, 2013 08:04 PM (QTHTd)

504 I don't want to get into an argument with Wheatie, but I don't think that is correct. The entire amount, including the withheld shares, should be taken into your taxable income as ordinary income. The shares that are withheld should represent withholding--just like withholding as part of your paycheck.

Depending on your tax situation, that withholding may be too much or it may be too little, just like the withholding in your paycheck. It is withheld at the IRS standard rate for such transactions.

508 So, how many of you suckers paid over 18% in taxes this year?

Thanks to Obama's cigarette taxes, I likely did,  or I will soon. And I make under 50k. It's worth noting that I was making about 25% more when he was elected, and gas prices were much lower.

I didn't vote for him. I knew he was lying before he opened his mouth at the '04 democrat convention.

Posted by: Ray Sist, very old savage peasant at April 13, 2013 08:08 PM (CuDT2)

511 Ok, just to be clear, let me write out an example using some example numbers:

I was awarded 300 shares of restricted stock to be vested in 3 years time.

Three years later, they vest at a price of $50/share.

My employer takes 100 shares from the award and uses them to withhold for the taxes.

I am left with 200 shares.

The price of the stock dips a little to around $48/share.

I tell the brokerage firm to hold the sale until the price reaches $49 since I don't want to wait until they reach over $50 again (and I'm pessimistic they will).

Fifteen days later, the stock price climbs to $49/share.

Brokerage executes the sale of 200 shares at $49/share.

My cost basis is 200 x $50 = $10,000.

My sale price is 200 x $49 = $9800.

My capital loss is $200.

I do NOT owe any cap gains taxes, but the $9800 is added to my 2012 income figure and taxed accordingly.

Do I have everything correct?

506 I don't want to get into an argument with Wheatie, but I don't think that is correct. The entire amount, including the withheld shares, should be taken into your taxable income as ordinary income. The shares that are withheld should represent withholding--just like withholding as part of your paycheck.

--------

Right, ScannerDan.

But that wasn't EC's question.

His 'taxable income' is not subject to Capital Gains.

Only the stocks that he Sold...at a Gain...are subject to Capital Gains Tax.

But I see what you're saying.

Using the 'entire award' as his cost basis, would reduce his CapGains Tax.

But...I don't think the IRS would look at it that way.

He could try to do it that way, though.

It's arguable.

Posted by: Scanner Dan at April 14, 2013 12:05 AM (8112S) EC, I tend to agree with Scanner on this. ALL the shares issued at vesting are part of your cost basis, including what is withheld.

Posted by: DAve at April 13, 2013 08:17 PM (XDC0v)

536 Ok, I'm getting two different answers.  Scanner and Linda say to use the entire award of shares to calculate the cost basis, while wheatie says only the remainder after withholding.

Using the entire award, the cost basis becomes 300 x $50 = $15,000.

My cap loss is then 200 x $49 = $9800  so $15,000 - $9800 = $5200.

That's a huge cap loss compared to my example with the remainder shares.

553 Your chance of getting audited over this, if the numbers are as you say, are zero. The stock was deferred compensation. How and what did your employer report? Imagine this. You are awarded what looks to be, at your time of being fully vested, $15K worth of stock. Since your employer is wanting to be on the right side of the IRS, she withholds one third of the shares. The floor falls through before either you or she sells shares, and what was $15K on V-day is now worth, say, $5K. No worry, she sells and ships $1,666 to the feds. You have a $15K gross income award, have prepaid only $1.66K in tax, have only $3.33K in the account, and a $10K loss, short term. You need to know what she reported to the feds. Then play it on TurboTax. But as for audit, no way you'll get a followup. They have bigger fish to fry.

Posted by: epobirs at April 14, 2013 12:04 AM (kcfmt) My favorite are the libs that pine for the tax rates of the 40's and 50's because they actually think those rates are why our economy boomed and we were manufacturing everything. They forget that every other industrialized country had been pretty much demolished back in the 30's and 40's, and we were the ones that were left unscathed.

In April 2007, I had to travel to Blythe, California from Lakewood (near Long Beach) to take a test in order to be eligible for clerical/office support work with the State of California. Given the tests were usually held only in Sacramento, yet they were holding them in Blythe this time (which was only 220-or-so miles away versus 400 to Sacto), I booked a night in the nearby Motel 6 the night before and took the trip.

It was just one night, at Motel 6, and there was NOTHING to do in Blythe (talk about a depressed town... even the Payless ShoeSource was closed down) but take the test the morning after I arrived. Yet I had a much more enjoyable time away than I ever would have guessed. It was my first actual vacation from my home in over 20 years.

Of course, it probably didn't hurt that on my way back, I stopped at Morongo and made some of my gas money back playing Hold'em. ;-)

647 I don't get why Californians are so happy about our Lotto joining the Powerball network. Basically it took the astronomical adverse odds that Mega Millions had, and made them at least three times worse. So now instead of a 1-in-30 billion chance to win, you have a 1-in-100 billion chance.

Sure, the prizes are somewhat bigger. But I'd be happy if I could just come into an extra five or ten grand for playing.

658 I found the cleverest way to stay out of prison. I married my accountant.

Non-English Major pedantry for a change: a tax return is the thing you have to send to them. A tax refund is what you'd like to get back. Lot of confusion on that, for instance in the tax time line above.

Traditional rifle instruction techniques always stressed handedness and "eyedness." The availability of LH target rifles being what it is (actually, not so bad once you know all the shooters in your state and know who's likely to die soon), I anticipated the work of some sports-psychologists and just started kids on right-hand guns, getting into the two-handed triangle ting only if they had severe problems. I haven't had any yet.

It used to be assumed that hand dominance was easier to change than eye dominance. I know of at least one multiple national champion who deliberately shoots with the wrong hand, has for 40 years, and is kind of all Zenny about it. He's right-handed and right-eyed, for normal tasks, but he's working a theory.

I think that the worsening confusion of "dominate" for "dominant" comes not from bad grammar, but from certain Californians having so much powder up their noses that you can't hear their n's anyway. A little Latin grammar -- better yet, a little Latin -- would straighten that right out, but let's face it, nobody gives a shit.

Posted by: epobirs at April 13, 2013 10:46 PM (kcfmt)

689 If you're "motivated," you can just about teach yourself Latin from the traditional dead-tree texts. IIRC there were only two curricula, with somewhat differing commentary around them, and one was by Jenney and Scudder.

"Latin Via Ovid" is a good analytical text, but I've gotten into some arguments (the good kind) over whether Ovid is too much of a trickster to use as a learning guide. The later people I studied with had a well-developed sense of grace and concision, and thought the Cicero and Sallust-based texts that I liked were awfully boring.

I have a radical proposal. If you live near a university, you should be able to find a handful of people there who think Latin is important. I was able to hire an undergraduate as a tutor for my son for a ridiculously cheap fee. For a while, I drove the kid to campus, where an indulgent department allowed us the use of an empty classroom. After a while, he started coming to us, and gradually became a trusted family friend. When that guy graduated, his successor just didn't work out at all, but by that time the kid had learned as much as he would have in four years of high school Latin, and as he was changing schools to begin sixth grade, I let the project lapse at that point.

Many stories arise from that adventure. The boy became an engineer, and his ability to write well puts him in demand in many ways. Any Latin fan will argue that studying Latin, more so than other languages, teaches you to consider what each word is being used for in a sentence, and that forces you to construct your thought process carefully. Modern philologists just hate that, but they're unable to argue their point clearly because their thoughts are so confused, proving the point.

692 And... now it works again. Temperamental bugger.

I wonder if it got too cold sitting near open window. Shouldn't be a problem but it's a straw to grasp at.

Don't potential doctors have to take a Latin course? They used to.

In other news, in NY there is a bunch of finger pointing and blame shifting going on re the guy that had his guns confiscated because he once took an SSRI. A judge said give em back and now the lawsuits begin.

Insty has a link.

696 690 "Latin Via Ovid" is a good analytical text.

----------

Been taking Latin up at the local community college. It's the text we're using.

It's a great movie. A masterpiece. Good cast. Whatever happened to Jaimz Woolvet? Thought he pretty much stole the show, despite very tough competition.

699 Go to Amazon via the AosHQ link and search for Henry Beard. He is one of the National Lampoon guys from way back in the 70s. He has two funny books on Latin in modern settings. Latin For All Occasions and X-treme Latin.

Also a book of French for cats.

701 Heh,

I just conned x64 Windows Vista into recognizing one of my old Adaptec 2940UW SCSI controllers that Adaptec abandoned driver development for.

Forcing the driver manager to install the 78xx emulated driver worked.  All the warning about that being "dangerous" are bullshit.  Its working.

Dedicated swap drive!  Yea baby, that's what I'm talking about.

703 blame shifting going on re the guy that had his guns confiscated because he once took an SSRI.

There's nothing in Federal firearms law about medications, only commitment to a mental institution.  People don't get committed for depression.

Hell, I'm clinically depressed all the time.  Any sane person would be these days.

707 It wouldn't work. We tried this in several states and the Left didn't care and managed to play the incrementalism game. They "accepted" the compromise, and then immediately used it to push for full marriages.

Sorry, late reply, but I had to take care of some stuff, blah blah.

I disagree on this; a few test cases doesn't mean diddly squat, esp. not in Cali. I mean it as a platform, consistent message. All I ever hear is no gay anything; like I said, I agree no on marriage but I don't believe that if the GOP consistently came out with fine on legal partnerships and was consistent, predictable and explained it then it wouldn't help. You have to try it for more than 20 minutes.

What I can say is NOT a complaint --- one of the great strengths of this blog is the allowance of many different interests through the co and guest bloggers. I don't care much about the gaming thread....but I defend to the death the right to post about it.

You can call it......death by boredom or indifference.

709 The gay activists have already made it abundantly clear that they will fight eternally over the word marriage and will never settle for anything less. It isn't about equal rights. It's about demanding everyone conform to the mode of thinking they regard as acceptable. Then they'll make it grounds for legal action if you don't take their mockery of a marriage seriously, especially if it occurs in a workplace.

710 "Left-handed people avoid using exact numbers" Bu... no. I'll give it a chance. Lets see the data. How many people did they study? 200 Bulls... no, lets keep going. How did you randomly select these people for your study? "200 participants in an online survey" Yeah, it's time to call it. BULLSHIT! If you don't know why that's a bad thing; call up the President of the United States and ask if his name is Ron Paul. If a small sample online survey is meaningful; it certainly should be.

711 and will never settle for anything less

With that shit being stirred about "infertility" and wanting special conception services, it seems clear to me that marriage is not the end game.

They want more -- a lot more.  They want society to provide legal and financial relief for their reproductively challenged lifestyle's "disabilities".

If it were JUST marriage, I wouldn't give a shit.  If they're looking to pick my pocket for reproductive services, that's where I draw the line.

As for the "evil Jews" story, I actually think that the teacher was in the right, from what I know about the case.  What she was trying to do was to make the students think about things from the 'other side', so to speak.  We have such a cartoonish picture of Nazi's and Nazism these days that it is difficult, if not impossible, to realize that the vast majority of the horrible things the Nazis did were carried out by 'ordinary' Germans.  Why did they go along with such obviously (to us, now) evilness?  In trying to understand this phenomenon, one has to go to the government (and through the government, the schools, media, etertainment, etc.) propaganda that constantly hammered out the theme of Jewish 'otherness'.  I would think that this sort of excercise would be of value to conservatives especially, in light of the dominance of the "progressive" establishment culture in the USA, and its near monopoly of the culture.  Unfortunately, trying to get students to think these days is a dangerous thing.

For the guy who wanted to know of any other indivduals who have been involved with championships in multiple sports besides Joe Gibbs, I give you Otto Graham.  He won 4 AAFC and 3 NFL championships as QB of the Cleveland Browns, and he played for the NBA champion Rochester Royals in 1946.  A true stud if ever there was one.

714 Posted by: <@PurpAv at April 14, 2013 04:57 AM (/gHaE)

The whole SSM thing has been about BENEFITS from the beginning. It then added REVENGE against those who resisted the propaganda and will eventually become a way to force churches to either close or become apostate to their church members.

Many "protestant" churches have already embraced the Gay Mafia Assault. Some in fear and others with glee (no not the tv show).

Because too many churches have become empty shells and have not only strayed but morphed into being places of denial of God and Christ.

The Liberals enjoy this assault as it is done without their lifting a finger yet the secular state will be the prime beneficiary.

(they've been drooling over the taxes and fees they could charge if only churches weren't exempt).

The only possible blocking force is SCOTUS and we've seen how Roberts isn't any conservative. His views will be more obvious after the latest ruling on Prop 8.

The assault on Marriage is actually an assault on Western Civ and  they know exactly what they're doing.

We (christians, conservatives, patriots) are being marginalized and demonized. The next step will be to be declared "outlaw" and targeted for reeducation, or "removal".

We ARE a threat to the New World Order of the Secular State.
And all our strengths will be attacked: Church, family, self reliance, independence, self defense.

715 they've been drooling over the taxes and fees they could charge if only churches weren't exempt

I had a piece of vacant rural farmland property in NY that the town was giving me a hard time with taxes on.  They insisted on zoning it as something that it wasn't and kept jacking the taxes to outlandish rates in a market where the property was unsalable and undevelopable commercially.  You can't give land away anymore in rural NY due to the tax rates.  Nobody wants it...except a tax exempt.

So I sold the land to a group of Hindus who put up a temple.  I lost some money on the deal, but got a LOT of satisfaction of fucking those assholes running the town out of any future taxes.

716 Is there a way to refresh the glow-in-the-dark (Tritium?) dots on milsurp nightsights?

The phosphor coating inside them can become depleted if kept in the daylight or under fluorescent lighting.

Keep the sights in the dark will make them be brighter a little longer.

Half life on tritium is about 12 years. At that point most lights are very dim.

their relative brightness (what your eye sees) may be brighter the less ambient light is available.

don't forget to dispose of them properly or at least carefully. They can set off some sensors and the light taken out of the sight housing break easily.
