Overnight Open Thread (13 Dec 2013)
— CDR M

What's up morons? I'm back from my little haze, gray and underway vacation just in time for another Friday the 13th ONT. Oh and good luck to all you morons who have some skin in the $400 Mega Millions tonight (whose odds are even harder now).

This is just business as usual. Lawmakers who oversee government surveillance programs receive millions from intelligence companies.
image h/t Monte Cristo Sandwich

I must live a sheltered life as it wasn't until my recent little "cruise" that I discovered this tasty sandwich. It's called the Monte Cristo and it was just divine. Especially dipped in maple syrup. I'm gonna add bacon to it next time.

Geminid Meteor Shower

Well, we were supposed to be enjoying the bright glow of comet ISON now but it decided to go poof so we'll have to live with the Geminid Meteor Shower tonight.

Took him to a dog behaviorist and she said: Get rid of this dog!

He had no submissive reflex.  Took him to the pound with a warning it should not go to a family with kids..  hopefully he went to a home with open land where he could run, or maybe hunt.  Dog was nuts.  and we paid a ton of money for hm too!

132 Also deep in end-of-semester grading.  Taught a case-based course, so a lot of written case reports to grade.  And my students think more writing=better writing.  What they don;t realize is that one correct thing said along with three things that were off point but were added as filler meas that they get a grade of 25%.  A clear violation of Twain's saying about staying quiet and being thought a fool vs opening ones' mouth and removing all doubt.

My bad - guess I didn't train the little darlings sufficiently during the semester by slapping down shitty writing.   At least I have a nice Merlot to keep me company.

We'd hunt field mice (I stopped him from eating two once when the January thaw flooded them out of their dens) with his tail wagging a mile a minute when on the hunt; and a couple of times I remember him pointing at something in the ravine but I couldn't see what it was.

Your use of the phrase "little darlings" suggests that some of your students think school is all about them being rewarded with grades that reflect how special they are rather than how much they learned.

173 SAN FRANCISCO — The sun's current space-weather cycle is the most anemic in 100 years, scientists say. Our star is now at "solar maximum," the peak phase of its 11-year activity cycle. But this solar max is weak, and the overall current cycle, known as Solar Cycle 24, conjures up comparisons to the famously feeble Solar Cycle 14 in the early 1900s, researchers said. "None of us alive have ever seen such a weak cycle. So we will learn something," Leif Svalgaard of Stanford University told reporters here today (Dec. 11) at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union.

Posted by: Chi-Town Jerry at December 13, 2013 10:24 PM (b/lt+) I have a beagle that I love. That being said, they are hounds, which means tons of energy and not particularly obedient. But they are also very loving toward their people. I got mine from a rescue group. She was 2-3 years old, past the loony puppy stage. She had been with a foster family, which means they evaluated her and did some training. My previous dog was a Shetland Sheepdog, which from a training perspective is the polar opposite of a beagle. They live to do what YOU want. Beagles are more focused on their need to follow their noses, and are more inclined to do what THEY want.

Oh, this is complicated.

When I started running (forgive me, I was getting fat, and I couldn't stand it), I started reading Runner's World, and one of the things I was initially skeptical of was the claim that the gluten we are encountering now is "different" from what we used to find in our wheat.

It turns out that, to my utter astonishment, yes, it's true.

The present variety of wheat being grown has been bred to produce a very short-amino-acid-chain gluten (and I remain a little skeptical about this), which a surprising number of people have issues about processing.

Hawaii 5-0's episode tonight addressed the Japanese internment camps.

Posted by: Biff Boffo at December 13, 2013 10:57 PM (1j9qS)

Considering the large Japanese-ancestry population and their influence on popular culture in HI, it's not TOTALLY unwarranted to have an episode dealing with the internment camps. Depends on how it's handled in the writing. But you can only do it once before it turns into an unbelievable cliche.

Thing is, the incessant caterwauling over fake, bullshit "bigotry" issues by the fucking leftists actually cheapens and demeans the instances of true bigotry in our history, to the point where it impedes the process of reconciliation. Of course, that's exactly what the cocksucking leftists want, to draw it out indefinitely so they can use it as a convenient bludgeon.

Then again, I'm always amused that the left constantly tries to honor "heroes" like MLK and Chavez.........by giving them street names in the shittiest, most crime-ridden and blood-soaked neighborhoods in the 'hood.

OK TR, I'm just getting up to speed myself on this. What I know now is that most wheat is genetically modified (gmo) for resistance to disease and insect attack. This will yeild greater production but may lead to decrease in human compatibility. Also known as "gluten intolerance". And I do know of people that have had "severe physical reactions"  that are cured by eliminating the intake of wheat products.

Studies that I have read state that due to gmo wheat the incidence of diabetes will explode in the next 20 years is frightening. If true.

I could go on, but this is emerging research with "discovervies to be made".

Mike - it's not just important for HS.  I teach MBAs, and if they sense that they can play you, they will.  It's not necessary to be a hardass, but with some classes you definitely have to demonstrate who can piss bigger (in some manner, shape, or form).  The best teachers are the ones who have a presence that no one would even try crossing them.

I have a colleague who teaches our law classes.  Before teaching, he was a partner at one of the biggest municipal bond law firms in the world - he retired at 42 with two places in NYV and another in Paris.  He's very respectful and professional to his students, but no-one in their right mind would try to cross him.  And he's flat out the best teacher in our school.

270 My son is in middle school now and every time I have to drop something off in the office I revert to a kid who is cowed by authority. It is dumb because the principal and vice principal are both about 12 years younger than me. But they make me feel like a 7th grader every damn time. The vice principal looks a bit like Common, he is very intimidating.

Ho-Lee-Shit, C.C.!

I pray that her Demons be quelled, mitigated and ultimately eliminated.

May our collective thoughts and prayers allay the destruction within her soul.  May her inner beauty be allowed to shine, as you have seen it.  More importantly, as God has known it.

May you and yours be a healing force, through God, in her life.  May modern medicine, as well as our prayers, aid this process for the good.  For the better.  For, indeed, her very soul.

Peace be with her.  And of course with you during these trying times.

My knees will be down this evening with her inner humanity and your loving thoughts in my prayers.  His shoulders are broad and strong.

May God assuage your very trepidation and worry.

In Jesus' Name, I Pray...

*amen*

Of course, that's exactly what the cocksucking leftists want, to draw it out indefinitely so they can use it as a convenient bludgeon." While driving today I listened to Hannity for a few minutes. Some Black woman jumped all over Hannity for his not liking Obama's shaking hands with R. Castro. He brought up the Castro brothers murder and treatment of Cubans. She told him that he had no problem being friends with families of slave holders. No shit. She equated associating with supposed descendants of slaveholders from 150 years ago with associating with a current mass murderer. She kept referring to families of slave holders. I hope my prayers offer only solace and inspiration.

...but I'm the same guy who can't shut his mouth about his Christmas lights.

Perhaps this is why I "get" the Human Condition and all its folly.  "Perspective" only makes me aware of it, however.  It doesn't make me a better person.

I'm pretty torn on this issue.  I've prayed on it and the answer will come in time.

351 288 Shelties are much smarter than Corgis! Never owned one but I've known a few. Posted by: Margarita DeVille at December 13, 2013 11:39 PM (dfYL9) Watch the Agility Competitions on tv. In the smaller division almost all of the top dogs are shelties. Just as in the next larger division almost all are border collies. Herding dogs are easier to train. They've been bred to do what their owners want. This is also supposed to be true of gun dogs.

There was this one Sheltie, however, that we saw at a show who was most amusing. During the long stay ---( the owner tells the dog to stay and then goes out of sight and the dog is supposed to sit in place for 3-5 minutes until the owner comes back and formally releases him) --- this Sheltie got up leapt around the ring, ran in circles, and then bolted for parts unknown. As far as I understand it, you have to sign up during an "enrollment period", like the one we're in right now for 2014, and they have to take all comers without regard to preexisting conditions. If the enrollment period closes, and you don't have insurance, you won't be able to get insurance.

That said, it appears that moving to a different state opens an enrollment period for you in that other state....so if I didn't have an insurance plan and discovered I had colon cancer, first thing I'd probably look into doing is moving.

433 I dunno, the Black Israelites who set up shop outside of my office building every Friday always display a large painting of "Black Jesus". They also give incendiary, racist speeches that would get a white dude severely beaten (if not killed) and/or arrested.

Anyway, I doubt that Jesus was European-type white. I also doubt that he looked like, say, Robert Mugabe (I denounce myself)  He probably looked like a Middle Eastern person. But does it really matter?

And why is anyone arguing about Santa? He's a Scandi legend, right?

I was able to train the nipping, but the barking was unavoidable.  That dog wasn't mine, but my folks' dog.  I offered to train him... LOL!  *FAIL*

They got him from The Mall.  That should answer all your questions!

He was a hyper-active mill-dog.  He was also the "Breed-Standard" and amongst the most beautiful and athletic dogs I'd ever seen.

Since he spent nearly all his time with my folks, he wasn't "reinforced"... BAH!  *frustration*

They'd "comfort bad behavior" and avoid 'problems'.  There was nothing I could do, but enjoy his quirkiness with my face implanted firmly in my palm.  Rubbing my temples with "exasperated joy".   *AHHHHHH!*

Why

O'Care caused this clusterfuck, as far as I can tell.

In NC, the insurance companies HAVE to pay out .80 of every dollar they take in on claims, or refund them at the end of the year. And this is not new.

441 I repeat, "Call it 'Mediterranean' and you won't be far off."

The Turks (so called) are a people from the steppes. They had not yet made their appearance in the area; indeed, St. Nicholas can be considered sort-of Greek - though I would call that a cultural descriptor more than anything else.

There is a reason I used "Mediterranean". Even now, there is a rather fascinating resemblance among all the peoples surrounding the Mediterranean Sea.

463 This has been a tough week for yours truly. I can literally feel the cracks forming in the base of what was once the Gibraltar of Statism. I'm finally coming to the self-realization that much of this falls on me. The aggressive flat-out lying, day in and day out has lost its luster. Folks who traditionally have little or no problem with falsehood as a way of life, have reached the saturation point. My own ass is eventually going to bite itself off and the world will be left with a failed presidency that has, and will crush all others through the sheer depth and breadth of its evil and immoral machinations.
Well, if one was to make ones own indelible mark on history itself, I suppose a long, squiggly shit stain will have to suffice. The Hopey and Changey sadly fades off into the sunset of mediocrity and incompetency. Sigh...and FML.

468 Pippop, there's no such thing as "race", there's just language groups.

In (say) 400 CE, "Greek" was a cultural descriptor, which could be applied without regard to the melanin content of someone's skin (though a very dark-skinned person who was not a native Greek speaker might be described as "Nubian"), as "Greek" meant a native Greek speaker, and that was a very broad descriptor.

BTW, why would you assume I thought you (or anyone) was any particular ethnic description, short of you telling me what your ethnicity is?

506 I'm still in a bit of shock about TR confirming my suspicion about states. I was over at tepid vapors trying to organize my thoughts and posted this:

So, during open enrollment, insurance companies have to enroll anyone, regardless of preexisting conditionsÂ….which, as we know, is like selling you homeownersÂ’ coverage after your house is on fire, or selling you collision insurance between the time you get hit and the arrival of the tow truckÂ…..but this is supposed to work because if you donÂ’t sign up during open enrollment, you have to wait another year.

Â….but you get another open enrollment period if you move out-of-state.

So if you’re diagnosed with something that takes a long time to treat….move. In some cities near state borders [e.g. Kansas City Missouri; Chattanooga, TN; Texarkana, Arkansas; Cincinnati, OH; Washington DC], you can even keep the same job and keep your favorite restaurants — but now you can sign up for the Gold Plan while your expensive illness is being treated.

Anyone over the age of 21 who believes that there really is a "free lunch", and that you can routinely give people free shit and the cost isn't going to come down on us sooner or later is too dumb to live on their own and should be put in a home. Training people to believe that they are entitled to a lifetime of free shit is damaging to our society.

536 BTW... I think I may have been a little crass toward, (of all people), Cthulhu.  After re-reading some posts, I feel the need to apologize for not being as clear in text as I should have been.

I understand what I meant at the time, but my directives were unclear, as were my intents and so-called "punch-lines".

Vague words lead to unclear motives and meanings.  I hope no offense was taken, but in case I was too goofy and, well, crass?  I meant nothing outwardly offensive toward your character.

I can certainly improve my daft sophistry and all its implications, should humor be my goal.

I certainly hope no offense was taken, but should it have been, it was all my Late-Night-Idiotic, Drunken Doing.

There have been No Better people To Me, Personally, than Cthulhu and Merovign.  I could ask for no-one better that these "answerable, congenial", Late-Night Guys.

Maybe I offended no-one.  Perhaps my drunken stupors are devoid of "ass-holery", but preemptive qualification never hurt anyone, right?

*sips*

As of this ninth beer, I ask of you to cast your sins unto me!

...okay, not really.  That would be an exercise in futility.  My power to 'absolve' was taken away by some dude named "Chuck" around the age of ten.

I was ten.  Not Chuck.  He was older and "punchier".  He said, "If you ever 'absolve' anyone, ever again, I will tell Mr. Scioto!"

He was the teacher at Church-School.  I was seven.  Chuck punched me really, really hard.

Chuck took away my Power of Absolution.

Forever.

...now I pray for people on street-corners and look for minor miracles in convenience stores.  It still happens.  Sometimes?  Burritos are finished in the "Micro-Oven" in half the time on the package.

Sometimes?  People don't get hit by inattentive passers-by in speeding vehicles.

I'd like to think I have something to do with that.

...even though I'm nowhere near the scene.

Somewhere, God is saying, "Enough.  You've mis-represented me for the last time."  -But I'll continue.

I'll continue because there is someone out there whose stupidity is bigger than mine.  I'll continue because there is someone out there who needs to be represented by anyone who is willing to Slap a Damned Weasel.  I'll continue because God Granted me Beer.

I am truly loved.

Slappy, you are truly loved, and appreciated. You're a good guy to hang with, and when people are at that "milling around" stage of thinking "how can I earnestly express my feelings?", you have a knack for giving us words that clearly come from the heart. I've never taken anything you've said to me as a problem, and I hope I've never indicated that I had a problem with you except in the voice of a weird ear-sock or something.

One thing to realize is that people can really get hit by something -- to the point where it haunts their dreams -- but find that the "compositional" part of their mind isn't getting them where they need to be about it. They want to support someone, but are afraid their support will be interpreted as criticism; they want to express condolence, but are afraid to remind someone of their loss.... They get bound-up in the "hows", when their hearts are in the right place, but caution keeps them from blurting things out. Your prayers are a great help to people, not in elevating your user profile or other useless bullshit, but in the true sense of being a help....serving to get people over their own speedbumps on their way to opening their hearts. You shouldn't fret that it's sinfully proud because you're praised for it, you should look at it as humble service that helps other people help themselves.

Uh-oh....there is trouble in Middle-Earth.

Honestly, Peter Jackson hit a good balance between "Middle-Earth Travelogue" and "story" in the first bit....but we all knew that he was leaning toward the former for The Hobbit when it came out as multiple films -- and I still think that it's three films because he raised so much goddamned money when he pitched it that he figured he had to spend it somehow. So did it work on THAT level -- was there sufficient Middle-Earth eye-candy with enough relevant shit going on to move us through it?

565 Some of the camera shots are so twisty you may get spatial disorientation.  Other camera shots reminded me what you saw on Dark Shadows or other daytime TV shows but in super detail.  And that became another troubling aspect, it was so sharp and detailed it lost realism in my opinion.

Bilbo when he is first sneaking around and realizing how big Smaug is, is pretty good.  But then when the dwarves come in to find out what happened to Bilbo, its a repeat of the cart ride with the goblins from the first Hobbit movie.  Lots of frantic action and you get to see minutes and minutes and minutes of Smaug climbing over everything or setting his gold afire.  It is a chase sequence that goes on too long and hence loses its pop.

And Torin dancing on the snout of Smaug?  That entire sequence was just a bad idea that reminded of something I would expect from a game.  Then in the town below Erebor, I kept expecting it to transform into Assassin's Creed.

Speaking of having the dead-nuts-perfect right words to say.....that little passage is one of the more perfect bits in literature. Unfortunately, unlike Shakespeare's work, it will become completely irrelevant as soon as Post-Modernism is recognized as being a farrago of absolute bullshit. That said, it's the dominant academic paradigm, and has been for decades. As long as PoMo had adherents, Douglas Adams ranks with Shakespeare.

The reference is to a particular couple of paragraphs in a rich and wonderful work ("....dead telephone sanitizers?" "Best kind.") -- but even amongst the sparklers, these shine.

The setup is that Ford and Arthur are stowaways on a spaceship captained by a would-be poet. He reads them something that is not quite as bad as:

"Under water grottos, caverns

Filled with apes

That eat figs.

Stepping on the figs

That the apes

Eat, they crunch.

The apes howl, bare

Their fangs, dance . . ."

Focus groups probably indicated that people loved the landscape of Middle-Earth, but weren't that much into the story.....so, just like a porn shoot, they didn't focus on continuity, scene, plot, or pacing -- they were there, but of secondary importance.

603 Just got back from Hobbit myself, wanted to see if there was a Moron consensus on it. I actually loved it, a lot, but I accepted after the 1st one that it is not the book in its own right, but rather a prequel to LOTR with a rollicking dragon tale sandwiched in between. If I want the book ill have to read the book. I thought the pacing and action was ten times better, no plodding anywhere, and even liked the pandering love triangle. i liked that Lake Town looked like a ghetto venice, and loved Smaug's design. Will go again. And no this is not Sunday book thread, but I will say that the tweaking of Hobbit makes me nervous for the wonderful Temeraire series that Jackson optioned. I adore that series, I am excited to see it come to life onscreen but worry. Not needlessly, as will probably be on TV and none of the tv adaptations stay remotely true to their source material (walking dead, true blood, dexter, etc.)

Yeah, I'm a bit bitter. On days like today I cannot tell if it's the state of the world that as me down or if my defective brain would put me through this regardless of what was happening.

633 #622

I never became a coffee drinker. Just as well since my blood pressure would have forced me on to decaf or to give it up entirely. My mother had to give up coffee decades ago because it would give her digestive problems. She substituted with Postum for a long time, a grain-based product created by renown weirdo C.W. Post. She doesn't drink that stuff anymore, as it became hard to find and was even discontinued for a few years. Instead she pursues all kind of coffee flavored stuff that isn't coffee, like Starbucks Frappicino. This is an obstacle to her weight loss goals, of course.

Speaking of weight loss, the power of starvation is great. I pretty much didn't eat the last two days and after showering a short while ago, I weighed myself for a result of 233.5, down from the 240 I'd been hovering around recently. I thought to remove the sodden towel from my waist and try again but got the same result. The exact same result. I wonder about that scale but it's what I have to work with.

On a related note, I never got interested in booze or drugs. I tried some stuff when I was a teenager but was never willing to spend my own money on it, which pretty much stopped it right there. For better or worse, I imagine I'd have been a spectacular drunk or junkie with my tendencies. My weakness is sugar. I gave up fruit juice and sweetened drinks recently because my weight was going from merely too much to serious concern. I'd been stable at the aforementioned 240 for many years but was getting into the 260 range.

Whether I can maintain the discipline to keep going down slowly remains to be seen. I have to struggle with indulgences that threaten to make up for the lack of sugary drinks. I don't fantasize I can go cold turkey but it remains to be seen if I can change my habits sufficiently.

637 In the most "trying times"?  Finding God is the furthest thing away from my psyche.

I have a few reminders around my room.  That's why you never see me "go off" on the daytime threads.

Once I can get re-connected with God, (or your personal "center"), I can start something over with a clear mind.

I've been days without that and I suffer for it.  I am a Moron.  Moreover, I am an idiot.

I don't attend church, I don't read my Bible often enough and I yell at the television.

Fuck Me Running.

-I've been a good cook, however, and I can stay sane with all-day projects.  I will break down Fantasy Baseball League Stats, by week, (twenty-six weeks in the Season), and figure out what you need out of any given position, weekly.  Team-Weekly.  Position-Weekly.  +/- K/BB Ratio.  Etc.

I can also play video games for days-on-end.  It can be obsessive.

...I still don't know code.

I know what I know, however and I do what I do.  I've paid my taxes and I've hallucinated after four nights of not sleeping.

I Pray for the former and endure the latter.

I know not one way to "skin a cat".

We might be better off if the USSR was still a going concern and we'd done more to clean up things at home. Looking back, those who screamed like stuck pigs at Reagan's action were just putting on a show while not stumbling a moment in their March.

I visited the Reagan Library a couple of weeks back. To me, it was both inspirational -- to see what he had called out and slapped down -- and sad, because of what his successors had allowed to regroup.....but watching the BH's reactions made me feel a tiny bit better about things.

The BH, like other sane people, adheres to conservative biases -- "that which is known to work will probably work best." She grew up, however, in a part of New York that put her comfortably among the "us" crowd in the famous illustration http://tinyurl.com/yujoyf -- although off to the RH side in Bedford Hills -- so she has a bunch of unspoken assumptions about world events.....and I could see that some of the exhibits were catching her off-guard.

And it was not going unnoticed that thing she was getting challenged with from Reagan's time were still hot items today.

'Fraid so.

I was just talking with my mother about the urge to own stuff to display in place of accomplishment. A certain portion of us are very vulnerable to this. It was important to me not only to have read a large number of books but also to own them and have them on display, so as to impress any visitor with my depth of literacy. But this was an expensive indulgence and sought to make more of the reading than it really was. Is it better to have read a thousand books or to read a few dozen and applied the things learned in a meaningful way?

It wasn't just books. There were other things like video games. I would get them for extremely discounted prices but more than make up for it in volume, resulting in a collection that I'd only ever find time to properly play a fraction of the contents. Likewise with DVDs. In the early days of the format I went on an enthusiastic buying spree. It wasn't that I was inclined to watch these things over and over. Repeat viewing only held interest if I was doing it with someone new to the material.

It seemed like a good idea at the time. The first time I saw 'Repo Man' was off a VHS tape a friend new to Los Angeles had made back when she lived in Cleveland. She had the tape just for the purpose of spreading the infection, so to speak. If you're above a certain age there was a lot of novelty to this in the 80s. To be able to summon up a favorite film or TV show at will was still very new, even if it was just a crappy VHS recording with a station ID in the corner throughout.

That is now so very long ago. There will soon be a generation of young adults baffled by the depiction of video rental stores in old movies. The window where this business thrived was so very brief in retrospect

It could be worse. My late cousin owned hundreds of Betamax recordings of TV shows and movies. Consequently, he kept a Beta deck working long after most people had consigned it to history. The sheer physical volume of all those cassettes was remarkable, consuming a whole wall of shelving around his TV setup. To someone born in the mid-1940s it must have felt like an awesome thing, to have all of these recordings at his command. I probably have a larger collection of HD quality video files on a single drive today.

These passing tech fancies press a big red button in some of our brains.

The lottery ticket urge is another vulnerability, the feeling the universe owes us something or that we might do great things if only given the chance. Or even the belief that we can be free of all major worries if we are first free of those tied to money. I imagine after buying a few high-end hookers one would start to desire a real relationship, and to do that you have to connect to the person without letting on that you're loaded or else you'll always have doubts about the sincerity of the relationship.

He called back when I was either leaving office or in ladies room. He has been in the hospital since last Friday because he couldn't breathe. They wouldn't let him ear or drink Monday to do test to watch if he might be swallowing food or liquids to see if it's accidentally getting into his lungs. The next day they used a camera to look at lungs & there is a lot of mucus, but that's all. He got pneumonia Tuesday & they put him on antibiotics. I was trying to look up phone number to call him last night before ten & I fell asleep. I have number programmed into iPhone, but both hospital & rehab show as no caller ID. Thank you Cthulhu & Slapweasel. I honestly don't know how much more his body can go through. It's sad because he did move toes & foot on his own after my visit in Late October & they restarted PT. They stop when he's sick. Any gain is probably is lost.

688 Someone posted last week that they a little dog carried around in a man purse would be horrible. But that little dog looks pretty damn happy.

689 Subjects in AoS comments weave serious discussions cheek-by-jowl with trivial pursuits. it's like laughing at something during a wake, and it's life. I tend to be the kid in the back pews making fart noises during the sermon, but I do appreciate the community, spirit, and faith exhibited here amid the softcore porn links, locker-room jokes, and smart military whatever. Much of the world sneers if you pause to say Grace at McD's. I appreciate the reminders. Okay, surely that brought on the morning thread.

690 Slap weasel, Sorry for space, but iPad pit it in. I said prayer you posted @ 7:52. It was beautiful. Thank you. I don't remember seeing Neets here, but people post at different times of the day. Thank you again for praying for Paul.

691 Good morning.

I would like a morning thread with a side of Vic.

692 It's 8:12 & ONT is still up. Someone must have forgotten or overslept.

693 Thanks, Slap. Keep up the good work you do here. Carol, thank you, too. It won't work out - I'm trying to steel myself for that, but sincerely, thanks for the kind words. It's not fatal, but very depressing. With that, I'm going to wake up this little poopyhead laying in bed with me and take him for a walk. He has an acre to run in, but I feel like the walk.

694 That numeral, as well as "Friday The Thirteenth", is as inconsequential to me as the temperature on any given day in August. -slap I'm with you, except about the temperature on any given day in August part. But I live in Oklahoma. Long ago I declared Fri 13 my lucky day, along with black cats and broken mirrors. I figure, if you're going to have superstitions, make them all positive ones. But that number, i sure, t's all fun n games til they brand it into your forehead...

Slap, thank you as always for the prayers.

696 Don't forget this country started with 13 colonies, & we were lucky to be born here in the best country in The a world. It will take time to recover our greatness once SCOAMF & progressive Republicans are voted out. We will prevail!

699 Conservative Crank, What are you going to do? Maybe you should have her mentally evaluated before you consider adoption. You might have changed your mind because I can't get back to comments near 236 & I've been awake most of the night & too tired to go turn on computer. God Bless you & Mrs. Crank for trying. I hope things work out well for her, she's only 13 & she's too young to give up on. You will figure out what is best, listen to what your heart tells you to do, but think with your brain before making anything permanent. Could you take her in as a foster child? That might be a way to see if she's willing to change if given the chance to have loving parents. Carol

700 Don't forget this country started with 13 colonies, & we were lucky to be born here in the best country in the world. -Carol Prior to 1966 or so, I lived in the best place in the world, heart of the USA, with the best schools and friends and family and everything Leave It to Beaver swell, except in glorious Technicolor. They gutted what made the town great, death and divorce wrecked the family, schools changed, cultural foundations were lost. All in half a decade. Could not give my kids what I received. Did our best to transmit the Spirit of it, though. A glorious 4th of July parade can still evoke it, but, yes, we''ll be a while rebuilding. God willing.

703 Toasty Chestnut, All change isn't good. I'm sorry that happened to your town & family. But the spirit is strong & try to keep it strong.
