Oh crap, it's Friday the 13th! Whatever. Why people think Friday the 13th is unlucky. Meh. I love me some Friday's.
A lot of talk about the Colorado deluge being "biblical" or "1000 year event" and that looks like it is true for that specific area based on historical data. However, the greatest 24-hr deluge in the U.S. occured July 24-25, 1979 in Alvin, TX. 43 inches of rain fell in 24 hours back then. Regardless, I hope any morons that are in the area are safe.
Operation Enduring Clusterfuck
U.S. spending roughly $27 million a week to keep the extra ships on watch. I guess with day two of the Russian/Syria chemical weapons talks going no where, the White House wants to keep up pressure on Syria but is it really keeping pressure on when Congress and the Senate have basically said no? I would have to think that Syria is pretty confident the U.S. will not strike, especially when you think about Assad's deamman switch.
The Russian arrangement is not yet official and may be Assad’s play for time. The chemical weapons are potentially more powerful against the US than rebels. Likely, a reality causing Secretaries Kerry and Hagel to eschew the term “regime change” is that the danger of Syria’s chemical weapons (CW) to the US increases as Assad teeters. Though rightfully loathed, Assad and his men secure their CW and have so far resisted handing party favors to associates.
With more and more reports coming out about the true nature of the Syrian rebels, leaving Assad in power would seem prudent. For now.
Oh, and the WaPo can't count. It's $33 million based on the numbers in the article. There are 4 destroyers not 1.

I'm sure the politicians will continue to try and get these things banned or try to start to tax the shit out of them. E-cigs as effective as patches in helping smokers quit. Actually, they are a tad bit more effective according to the article. I know they worked for me and many that I know to kick the analog habit.
The results showed that the percentage of e-cigarette quitters was highest, at 7.3%, compared with 5.8% of the nicotine patches users, and 4.1% of the placebo e-cigarette users.

It used to be that way in the late 70s. No pop was allowed. 15 cent Kool Aid packets were allowed though so the Moms would send their kids through the line first since they each would get the change back from the $1 food stamp. Pretty sure the change went for booze not pop since we could see the liquor store from the cash registers.

Not related to your story but I always upgrade to first class if they haven't filled the seats. You would be surprised how many people don't realize you can barter with the agent, the most I think I ever spent to upgrade was twenty bucks, usually ten bucks will do it.

The anonymous congressional staffer who described Obama's Syria policy earlier this week instead used the phrase "unmitigated clusterfuck", which is frankly even better and funnier.
Also, the patch is surprisingly bellicose with eagles and swords and whatnot. It would be more accurate to perhaps depict a winged weathervane with Obama's face, surrounded by a flock of question marks. And a smirking Putin in profile in the background.

Very interesting!! My Grandpa came over from Finland and still can speak the language. He just turned 89 and insisted he be able to renew his DL. His family discouraged this but he promised only to drive to the liquor store and the hospital where he volunteers. After reading that article I am starting to have an understanding of the alcohol problems that run in the family.

If it involves the Red Cross, no. Plus, I'm too little to donate blood, I go into shock. I go with Salvation Army, almost exclusively. They run a tight ship, they don't steal from anyone and they are usually one of the first on the scene. I love those guys.

The Swedes planted a colony here in what is now the US back in the 17th century, and like certain other nations they used their colony as a way of getting rid of certain difficult elements. For the Swedes the difficult elements were a lot of Finns. It was the Finns who introduced the log cabin to America, and being from a culture with a strong hunting tradition, quickly took to the woods and got along well with the local Delaware Indians- according to one biographer, descendants of these Finns were among those that taught a young Daniel Boone how to survive in the forest.

I lived in Houston TX in '78, my Dad would get in line with the Merc while Mom and the rest of us kids would go to the grocery store. While he was in line Mom had plenty of time to do the shopping for the next two weeks. One of us would stand near the plate glass and when Dad would get to the pumps we'd go get Mom, she'd get the frozen stuff and we'd head out to the car and get there just as he was finishing up. Fortunately for Dad his license plate let him get gas on Friday, IIRC evens was Mon-Wed-Fri and odds was Tues-Thurs-Sat, and anyone could fill up on Sunday.

In addition, sakes were restricted to odd or even plate numbers on appropriate days.

Timeframe was 4-6 weeks, since this was a pretty minor surgery, I can walk unaided IF I don't push hard and take my time. Not any particular discomfort, just a sort of tight feeling.
Biggest plus is that function will be unimpaired long term.

They can fail to fire though if poorly maintained. There's at least one dead NYPD detective I know of who never fired their revolver or took it out of their holster in like 20 years. Subsequent investigation of the fatality showed all their range quals turned out to be "pencil pass" favors.
The day he needed it, it was locked up solid with rust from 20 years of sweat, encrusted pocket lint/dirt, etc.

Round about 2050, while the scientists are consensualling each other about the up and coming ice age, they will say that the AGW fraud was all a myth, that it was cooked up by a complicit media over a few articles taken out of context. But here's the thing...they will be right, just as the ones who call the cooling scam a myth are right now, but for the wrong reasons.
Yes it was a few articles blown way out of proportion by a complicit media with those fears being fed by "scientists" who were bilking the worlds governments out of billions of dollars of research money. Just like today and the AGW scam. And the sad thing is...its the same group of "scientists" doing the scaring, and the same complicit media doing the hyping. The names change (well, a few of them don't, that James Hanson (sp?) asshole from NASA was beating the ice age drum in the 70s just like he's beating the AGW drum now) but the story is still the same.
It's all bullshit. Follow the money.

The best gun is the one you like, will practice with, and will carry wherever it is legal to do so (not that I would advocate anything illegal mind you), because that's the one you will have with you if/when you need it.

For years, my carry piece has been my 1911. Either that gun was designed for my hand, or vice versa. I've handled a ton of weapons, but this single auto just FITS. Can't describe it any other way.
Never have had a ftf, and only a couple ftls, attributed to a mag problem.
Plus each year it sees a gunsmith for a thorough check. The only thing I require from the weapon is that it goes bang when the trigger is squeezed--EVERY DAMN TIME.

I need to get back into my dry fire routine. I could really tell the difference last range session. I started out with the .45 pulling low and left, and ended up doing the same thing with the 9mm. Flinching MF'r, the only cure for that is a religiously followed dry fire routine coupled with a few snap caps loaded in with some live rounds by your range partner so you don't know where they are.

Mero, Gotta say that a .22 is the ideal for a beginner. No recoil to distract or create a flinch. When the basics are ingrained, then you can caliber up.
Least this has been my experience.

4) Squeeze (bang)
That drill cures 99% of semi problems. With practice, you can get down to around a second or so.
The other 1% are probably gonna be mechanical breakage, then you're SOL.

I had a problem with the Glock 36 when I first got it, failure to eject issues. Its not an unheard of problem with the first 36's, and mine was a Gen 2. I changed the spring out and haven't had a problem with it since, but it did lessen my confidence in the gun for a while.
With that said, if you are having problems with your semi then you need another gun. Either it's a handling issue (limp wristing) or it's a mechanical issue with the gun, either way it will decrease your confidence in it and you won't want to carry it. Sometimes another gun will solve the problem (for instance when Ima used to comment regularly she would tell you she can't shoot a Glock but loves her Sig).
Nothing wrong with a wheelgun, BTW, and I'm not really a Glock fanboi although that's all I own right now. I have a friend who carries a .454 Alaskan, he says he only wants to have to shoot it once, and whoever he has to shoot he will try hard not to kill...so that he can beat them to death with the gun for making him shoot it. I've shot it, and that's a kicking beast, but it will surely get the job done. Shock And Awe.

I've had semi pistols that had jamming problems. It usually was a cheap mag problem or could be fixed with a specific ammo selection. Any gun you buy get out and know it. It will tell you if it's the right one for you and you will learn it's idiosyncrasies. Is it a shooting in the woods target gun or Holy shit my life is on the line gun.

The day I found fluffy there was a vintage LadySmith in the case. They wanted over 2 grand for it. I didn't even ask to hold it, although it was tiny and appealing. I don't know if it was a .357, it seemed very, very small. And very pricey. Plus, who knew where she'd been????

No, civie. I had two at one point. A plain 92F and 92FS. Both had the same eat-anything and fire filthy good manners.
I wouldn't be surprised if some of the mil versions had cheaper cruder feed ramp machining to reduce cost since all they're supposed to eat is ball. A lot of the German wartime Walther 9's and 32's I've had were were fussy about ammo because of the cruder machining than on the peacetime civilian versions.

The particular jamnation special was something called a (I think) a Dectronics stainless compact .45 (1911?) - kept by an ex Redleg capt who was bigtime CCW guy - it had problems in spite of his expertise. The .357 fires .38 very politely -- really the only short-barrel I've ever liked.
The attitude only comes on in the more powerful round.
I fired a titanium frame .357 snubby once. "Once." It's not the wrist action, it's the "Smith hoop" trigger guard shape (that almost all revolvers use). The bird finger is trapped behind that little strap. If your fingers happen to be extremely slim, you miss all the fun. It stings, very annoyingly. It's not supposed to hurt, as the girl said at the picnic.

PS that particular model is legendary as one of the best airsoft pistols in the price range and has been for many years.
They are good for practice because the controls are like the real thing, they actually have a small amount of recoil, but they don't make you flinch. You learn to manage the controls (well, trigger, it's a Glock) without learning bad habits.
And reasonably accurate.
Only problems is finding tons of little plastic BBs all over the house, they *do* bounce.

I don't work "on" rigs; I work "at" them. A geologist on the wellsite, where I am at right now, incidentally. But back when I was a Halliburton hand, I did have to climb all over the rig, installing sensors and such-like. Now, about all I do on the rig side of the lease is occasional service on the rental gas detector slung on the shaker box (aka possum belly).

The reason I asked is cause I work in the failure analysis lab of the company that makes the blue painted pressure sensors for the oil industry. We had a attachment for out tensile tester called Bubba's Boot. To prove our design could take some guy using our sensor as a ladder step.

With all my knee "issues", I can still run pretty well, (for 42), and I can certainly get on the mountain bike. No more off-roading for this daredevil now, however.

But before I go. I lost a friend a year ago yesterday. Glen Doherty. His book, Navy SEAL Sniper is coffee table quality. It's the best shooting book I've read (I edited it) and all my personal bias aside when I got my copy in the mail, I was floored.
It's that good.
I'm not pushing the book. I just ask you take 30 seconds. Half a minute.
Glen was black on ammo and on the roof when the mortars hit.
He manned up and inserted into a lost situation, and he did it recovering from a broken arm two weeks earlier when he got run the hell over on his bike back in the states.
What Glen and Ty did that day would have earned The Medal had they been active duty. Those two saved everyone, and they're the sole reason the loss is 4 not 40.

I remember sensors like that. And they do tend to get installed in places where the hands will climb upon them. And many such sensors are attached to the pipe with a hammer union, so they have to be able to take that kind of abuse, too.
Nowadays, many of the sensors are an integral part of the equipment, and rig monitoring systems are owned and operated by the drilling contractor, instead of a service rigged in and maintained by the mud logging company. Pump stroke counters used to be a microswitch with a wire feeler that got tripped by the rubber splash guard on a pump piston rod, and they were finicky to install, and often got disrupted by crew activity. Now they have a magnetic pickup incorporated in one of the shaft bearings.

I saw gun camera footage where a Tomcat pilot shot a cow. The cow was on the shooting range, and he was shooting blue (practice) ammo, but practice ammo or not 20mm rounds at 6000 rpm will make a mess out of a cow.

The Arisaka is a 7.7x58 that he got from an uncle that was a trophy (Dad was a little young for WWII). The Luger was $65 mail order purchase he made because he read the govt had made it illegal and out of spite he ordered one and a P38 in the same order.

I read 21st back in 2011, called brandon and said "WTF? this is poop!" (not a direct quote) and Glen was deployed so we (me, Brandond and John Mann) reworked it from the ground up. Glen provided input via camel and notes scrawled on cardboard.
Skyhorse publishing exceeded expectations. It's truly coffee table quality. I hope you like it.

Range Partner has a Savage in .338 Lapua that he couldn't get the action to close on when it was loaded. Sent it back, they did the headspace check on it and told him pretty much the same thing, as long as its new its gonna be stiff. It loosened up after a few rounds, but damn those rounds are costly! (something like 4 bucks a round, certainly made me feel foolish for bitching about the roughly $1.40/round 6.5x50 Japanese for the Arisaka)

I'll throw my uninformed 2 cents in, here -- the majority of the spilled oil has been degraded and is now a tree limb in Indonesia, a fish in the Amazon, algae in Lake Baikal, and a bobcat in Colorado. It's an organic product produced organically, recycled by organic processes into other organic matter.
And I'll go a little further -- it was a horrible mess, but nothing like what the MSM pumped it into and it's been used more as an opportunity for governmental shakedown than anything worthwhile. If people were actually required to reasonably prove that they had actually been harmed by the spill in order to be covered for their loss, there'd have damned few payouts and it would have been over far quicker.

I attend church very sporadically. Mostly when I'm asked, in times of need or Family. I've never "lived" God's Word.
...but I Love It. There's a sense of inspiration when I hear it and I am driven to tears, at times, to know it. There is a there there. There is something beyond myself that I can't quite explain.
I was driven, as a child to look things up in an unabridged dictionary whenever I'd read something I didn't understand. This was partially due to my parents' chiding of my "deez-dem-dose" childhood impediment.
When I mispronounce or misspell something, my face turns red and I don't mind being corrected. How I wish there were more like me, whose pride doesn't interfere with learning.
Larger issues override syntax and pronunciation. One can be petty when chastising fellow travelers on their usage.
What I cannot stand is "professional" broadcasters, announcers, play-by-play guys, anchormen, and the like, (entrusted with our language), dropping horse shit upon the populace. "Dumb Jock" is a name brand way too far often"
I feel this way with those entrusted with Scripture, MUCH, MUCH deeper. If you use a phrase from the Bible like you'd throw out: "It is what it is" -? I'll never trust you again. You're a commercial for "Bible-Brand Bullshit".
As a writer, I'll never 'get my tenses to agree', because I was never told that my "creative writing" had such disagreement. Public schools "long" for creative idiots such as myself because they want to take the pressure off themselves and tell me to "find myself" and "create a voice".
They'd rather do that than correct me for syntax and agreement of tense.
Am I bitter? You bet.
Do I care? Yup.
My hippie-ass teachers did me more of a disservice than I'll ever know.
If I ever get a play-by-play gig for anything, I'll be embarrassed to get the fan mail I deserve.
I am a product of a well-funded school system gone awry. I thank God I'm self-aware and always asking questions of myself.
