Finally we have one of those national day thingamajigs that I can support. It's National Bourbon Day. And it's also Flag Day. Which means Google ignores it. And Happy Birthday U.S. Army! Google ignores that too.

Drone Peeping Toms

Kinda freaky. Worried About Peeping Flying Drones? I think a shotgun will work pretty good if you find someone hovering a drone with camera outside your window. Or you could go out front and find the guy with the controls and taze the shit out of him. What else can you morons come up with?

Honeywell is offering up these bureaucrat-controlled thermostats for other municipalities. Of course, if you choose to opt out, you must pay to do so. In CA, it'll cost you $75 initially plus $10 a month just to opt out.

30 I wasn't going to waste this comment in one of those lesser threads but in James Burke's series The Day the Universe Changed that was from the mid-'80s one of the episodes said that in the Middle Ages people had much better memories than people today (in the '80s) and that people who were wandering minstrels/troubadours had fantastic memories even for the day and it was increasing literacy that killed our memories because we could now write down stuff and then forget about it until we needed it or just had to remember what book covered the information we were interested in recalling. So extrapolating that to Bing/Google etc. because everything's on the net and I can find it whenever I need it but I don't need to commit it perfectly to memory isn't a stretch.

We tried tuning to 432 instead of 440  tonight. It was interesting. After years of tuning to the 440 standard,  it sounded just different enough.  My guitar-playing   buddy (whom I've been  trying to turn with some success)    told me about that tuning. There are a bunch of YooToob videos about  it.

The wholesale price of electricity at peak hours, especially in RTO markets, is exponentially higher than at other times. These are utilities that do have an interest in not paying $500/MWh because it's 4:00 in the pm, it's 95 degrees out, and because the douches at the Sierra Club have insisted on wind (unreliable) over coal generation (reliable) they gotta pay an insane LMP.

But YOU are not raising and lowering your AC temperature, the electric utility company is.  It is about CONTROL.  And putting these voluntary pilot programs out there is dangerous, because it just enables the utility to make the program mandatory via the supposed "success" of the pilot program (where the "success" is heavily influenced by selection bias, of course).

It's insidious long term because it's a precursor to things more sinister which is the essence of "Nudge Theory". Make people think they are voluntarily making an economic choice to their benefit when the ultimate object is to introduce, then train, then force the consumer into behaving the way someone else - specifically government - wants them to while convincing them that they chose to do it. It's voluntary subservience in the long term which will evolve into nonvoluntary ends.

That's the topmost view of the process nevermind the economic arguments that can be debated ad nauseum.

If so, then it's really no surprise that you would take a dim view of these A/C management programs---but free market economics favor them. The price of wholesale electricity varies month by month, and minute by minute. Some of that variation is due to fluctuations in fuel prices, but most of it is due to the *mix* of fuels being used at any given time, as well as the simple laws of supply and demand. On a hot summer day in Texas, when every single power plant needs to be running to keep up with demand---from the dirtiest coal to the cleanest nuke or hydro---electricity is *necessarily* the most expensive. Several times more expensive, in fact, than in "off-peak" times like nights or spring/fall days when the more expensive peaker plants are offline. But most American consumers pay the same flat rate for their electricity, no matter what time of year and no matter what time of day. Some pay a tiered rate based on volume, but that's not really tied to the underlying cost to serve, either. The bottom line: most electric companies are *losing money* when you run your A/C, which means that they need to make even *more* money on you on the other electricity you use. Electric companies have to break even or more in the end, and none of us wingnuts are going to blame them for that. Another way to look at it is this: we are are paying for our August A/C in April. If we were willing to pay a time-varying rate for our electricity---more in the summer, less in the fall; more in the afternoon, less in the morning---then these kinds of A/C management programs would probably be necessary. Most of us would likely kick our thermostats down a couple degrees if we could actually save the *true* cost of our electricty in those key times. But we're not. Believe me, I tried to start a new-fangled electric company that helped people see their true electricity cost. We failed. I'm not saying we didn't make mistakes; of course we did. We probably deserved to fail. But we're not the only ones that have tried this. Many incumbent electricity companies offer time varying rates. Nobody goes for them. It freaks them out to see the true cost of their summer afternoon electricity. So we're stuck with these weird incentive programs instead.

I don't know what the max is during the winter, because I like it 68, and then when you turn it off to go to bed, it will just get colder.

Evidently, remembering names is a somewhat different "protocol" than the rest of our memory, and is very common to aging.

Just because you have a smart meter installed doesn't mean you have load control device installed. In fact, the meter itself can't change your load - you have to have the extra device installed - and for that matter, you can have the load control device installed without a smart meter.

I happen to think that these devices and programs are probably a net benefit for the customer as they give us more options. I completely understand why people are skeptical, though, so I apologize if I sounded pushy above. We have no reason to trust the government, and so your concerns are well-founded. Some of us might actually let the electric company pause our A/C when there is an unexpected price spike in the wholesale marketplace (which is scary, believe me.) Some of us would learn to do with a lot less A/C. And maybe we'd be a lot more angry than we are about the roadblocks the government puts in our way for cheaper electricity sources like natural gas and nuke.

227 Look, this is how these "voluntary" "pilot programs" work.

First, the pilot program is started by a bunch of lefty do-gooders who sign up all of their friends.  Due to heavy selection bias, the pilot program is deemed a "success".  Then the program becomes available to the wider public, but on a "voluntary" basis.  But there are incentives and kickbacks and rebates and all sorts of gimmicks to get people to sign up.  So the LIV types go ahead and sign up because they just want free/cheap shit.  Then the program is deemed an even bigger success due to all of the demand for the program.  Then people are charged for NOT signing up for the "wildly successful" program (cf. California).  So the people on the fence begrudgingly sign up because they don't want to have to pay extra.  Then, the last step is to make it mandatory.  Because already a majority of people are signed up on their own free will, so that is like democracy in action, right?  Plus it's good for the children and the puppies and the manatees and all that.  Plus you'll save ALL THIS MONEY!  And it will work exactly as planned!!!  So those who opposed this stupid idea from the beginning are forced into the position of reactionary throwbacks who are "resisting progress".  No, just no.  It is best not to go down this path in the first place.  The slippery slope is real.  Every little step down the slope justifies taking the next step, until we are at the mercy of centralized planners dictating to us when we can and cannot use our electrical appliances.

They do that as well here... how it works though, is they give you extra savings if you decide to use less power during certain peak periods. They tell you the days and ranges beforehand and let you do it.

Overall, I'd be concerned if my thermostat was network connected. We have older and very young folks in the house, and if the temperature went into an unacceptable range there could be health complications.

It wouldn't be a problem as long as I could turn off its network connection, of course, and take full manual control if needed.

Government regulated monopolies control the wires that go to your home, so of course it's all the same electrons. So how in the world does it work to have multiple private electricity companies? Well, basically, you pay your retailer to enter into contracts with wholesalers/generators on your behalf. It's all the same electrons, but as long as the sources and sinks all add up, you still get free market behavior. So the government really doesn't need to be involved in these A/C management programs.

This'd be cool if they just provided wires to your house and rented 'em out to you, but the utilities are also energy producers -- which creates a conflict of interest. This means that the government also sets payback rates for power plants and mandates for certain flavors of energy -- also, not cool.




In a perfect world, you'd pay a rental fee for the lines from the switches to your home, and producers would pay a rental fee for the lines from powerplants to the switches, then you'd have an automated continuous auction of power between all the producers and consumers -- so that a dam might go "got a kwH for a nickel, for a nickel, anyone have a nickel?" and a coal plant might go "got a kwH for six-and-a-quarter", and a wind farm might go, "got a kwH for twenty-eight cents....oops, no I don't." And your power provision algorithm could go "buy whatever power is cheap" or "shut stuff down when it's over a dime" or "buy only hydroelectric" or whatever.



Then you'd have real market information and total local control over what you were consuming -- and, if you look at it, it ain't unpossible. But you'd have to kick the government out of the system first and break up the utilities into competing power producers and network.

Double the thickness of all outside walls: 2x6 -> two 2x6 frames, plenty of insulation. Add some thermal mass to the inside, and add some solar heat collectors on the south walls of the house. Then learn energy-efficiency, circa Jimmuh Carter's 1977. It might not be pleasant, that's a personal decision, but it can be done. It is one of the few ways to beat The System.

370 Got my first batch fermenting in a bucket in the hall bathroom. How do you know when it's done? Congrats! Once you start brewing at home, you won't be buying much at the store. There's the accurate way to check and then there's the slightly less accurate but easier and generally correct way. The most accurate way is to use a hydrometer (which measures the weight of the beer, and thus alcohol content), and if it holds steady for 3+ days, you're set. Honestly though, I just basically let it sit for 2 weeks after brewing, and it's just about always ready. So give it 2 weeks and it should be done. I'm not sure if you're using a secondary fermenter, but in that case it's usually one week in the primary and another in the secondary. If it's a stout or a porter, you could let it ferment longer, but 2 weeks total is a good rule of thumb. Once you've bottled they usually suggest waiting 3 weeks or so to drink. While it definitely usually tastes better if you let it age a while, generally speaking it'll be drinkable after just a few days.

387 My best ales fermented for 2+ weeks at 70F, then at least 1 more week in a new container at 70F, then refrigerated for at least 48 hours before going into the keg and carbonated with the CO2 bottle.  At ale fermentation temperatures the dormant yeast will start to affect the taste after 2 weeks.

The first 24-48 hours are usually the peak time with the most active fermentation. Just look at the valve on top gurgling to see. I think you'll be okay, though - better a little long than too short.

417 Yeast is funny, it mutates rather fast and there are lots of variables so no two fermentations will come out the same.  Three weeks past peak activity it should be fermenting very slowly now.  If you are going to bottle it's time to do it.

449 No loctite. we have to take the hub and blades off all the time for maintenance. the jesus nut is cut like a gear, lots of teeth around the perimeter. there is a mast nut lock which is a piece of metal that bolts to the hub that engages two of the teeth cut into the mast nut keeping it from rotating loos and it  is safety wired and torqued as well. Plus we have a requirement for two mechanics to sign off on important life ending shit like leaving a mast nut loose. (yes ive read about it happening and the end isnt good)

Is that the one they call Pythagorean tuning? I remember reading up on it, and it was supposed to make some harmonies or some shit sound better. I never tuned there on purpose, but I do have a few guitars tuned to E flat/D# 430, but every once in a while I'll run across a band that seems to be a hair above 430 when you play the CD, so I'll have to bring it up a wee bit to actually be in tune. One of the more recent Helloween albums comes to mind. Have I consciously tuned there? Not really, but have I ever actually tuned there, probably.

I have a tuner like that, its called a snark. Stupid fucking name, but man what a little gem that sucker is, especially for $12. I have a peterson strobe tuner that I use when it really matters, like for setting intonation,  but that little clip on sucker is great. I want one for every room in the house. lol

From what I read, that 432 tuning is supposed to be pretty magical for ceratin things, maybe there is some truth to it.

Berserker, yeah those little tuners are nice, but don't work too well on my bass.

 

My guitar  player  told me about that tuning, then pointed me towards a bunch of yootoob videos about it,  they showed where folks have put plates  over speakers with sand on them, then  ran certain frequencies through them. The patterns   made in the sand were intriguing. You can see a big difference in the tunings.

 

We play blues,  FWIW.  Not sure about rock, but it might be worth a try. I know about several bands who employ drop tunings, usually down a half-step.  This is about half way between the   two. Maths would be required to find exactly where it is, but not tonight   because, Guinness.

I used methods like that for tuning the tops on classical guitars. You use glitter to see the pattern it makes in the top to see its resonant frequenices, and where the adjustments need to be made. They're called chladni patterns, after the dude who discovered it.

Somehow we survived without seat belts, bicycle helmets, and my dad would drive while drinking a beer and mom would have a smoke. My brother and I would make butter and sugar sandwiches after school on white bread. No cells or computers and only 6 tv channels. Life was grand.

I've got to say, there's a whole lot to recommend the place.....like I should talk, in Cali. But the Bev Perdue factor is somewhat worrisome. Part of the reason to move is to be somewhere the blues won't pop up and screw-up what we've been building for years.



I mean, take this town. Nice place. Great neighbors. Wonderful climate. Then the City Council decides to indebt us to a football stadium to the tune of $4K per person. If anyone is smart enough to fog a mirror (a dubious proposition), we'll get $8K less for this house when we sell it than we otherwise would have -- virtually overnight. Cost of the stadium's already blossomed from $800M to $1.3B....who could have seen THAT coming? And wait until they run it -- the entire town is only 110K souls, and there will be 48K fans at the stadium when full.....think the roads are up to it? The cops?



So I'm really, really paranoid about being somewhere purple. I'd love to turn it solidly red, but I'm getting too old for the blue spells.

The countryside is very pretty, and there's a lot of nice places there, and we had some good hikes.....but it didn't really seal the deal like I'd hoped. There were some economic analyses in the stuff the USPS lost that might have been helpful, but that front has almost got me too pissed-off to see straight (did you know that the Feds send all mail with detached labels to a central facility in Atlanta, thus blowing-off the most important piece of information about the parcel -- where the label got detached?)

So far as I know, FOIA is Federal only. Local regulations on trash pickup don't qualify.

I think the best option is a limited range jammer. Multiscanning the most likely freqs and when found what they're using, over power the signal. A lot have automatic landing programs so you'll get a free operational drone for YOUR own use.

One of the best "karma" tricks I know of is to somehow get sardines or other oily smelly fish planted in his air conditioning ducts.  How to get access to his house is another problem.  The smell will dive him mad as it is summer and he won't be able to figure it out for a long time.  Got any friends in the HVAC business?

The Irwin family gave so much, and (amazingly) continue to have such joie de vivre -- but I'm not ready for it.
