Overnight Open Thread (15 March 2013)
— CDR M

How Your Retirement Package Compares To Members Of Congress. Nice of them to exempt themselves from having to contribute more to their very, very nice pension.

They bumped up the rate at which federal employees contribute to their pension plan, saving an estimated $15 billion over the next 11 years.

They also made sure that none of the increase applied to themselves. Anyone in service before the law went into effect would pay into the pension plan at the old rate.

For all the talk you hear from Capitol Hill about running government more like a business, Congress has a retirement plan that would make any Fortune 500 executive blush. Members can retire younger, having contributed fewer of their own dollars, than almost any worker in the country — even more than the generous terms other federal workers get.

It's not like they need the pension when they leave office. Most Of Them End Up Being Well Paid as lobbyists or at think tanks. Hell, a lot of them make a killing with investments based on inside information. Nearly half of the former congresscritters of the 112th Congress are lobbyists. As Instapundit wrote, Tax The Revolving Door. Space Sex

According to some "researchers", Sex In Space Will Kill You. Well that'll suck for that couple that gets picked to go to Mars. Sounds like fapping still won't kill you but doing it in zero-G might present some new problems. Tune in next week when "researchers" say STD's in space will turn you into an alien.

10 I saw that Return of the Jedi Princess Leia bikini costume at the Smithsonian Air & Space museum (they had a bunch of Star Wars costumes) and it is unbelievably tiny. Carrie Fisher was petite 30 years ago! And James T. Kirk in his prime? Totally hit that (no way sex in space would kill that dude).

59 It's not like they need the pension when they leave office. Are there are any politicians who get out of office and do anything useful with their lives? Cure diseases? Make great art? Or is it always policy, pontificating, and trying to run other people's lives if they don't just go away? I guess Carter did with the house-building bullshit he played at, but then he dropped the hammer and went back to being a public-policy fuckup.

Logistics of getting family of 5 (plus cat and dog) out of one house and into another several states away in a timely manner will be interesting.

The ability to play dumb when something is broken.

My dog used to play it safe & do that 24/7. Did it well, too.

154 Conroe should be fine, then Polli. Housing is priced fairly, and although you will still be hit with heavy rain and flooding there if a hurricane hits, you won't have the surge, and hopefully not the wind damage. Definitely get flood insurance-the caliche soil in the area doesn't absorb water well. Also, find out if the house you are looking at is in the hundred year flood plane, and when the last major flood took place-that will affect your insurance prices too.

Er, no. Considering that hangovers are largely dehydration, salt water and alcohol would not be an appropriate mix. As 'wog has it, it helped disinfect the drinking water.

274 166 128 Exurb is perfect BTH, since I'm looking for a couple acres but near basic shopping. Apparently they're building a HEB there which is big news. HEB is big in central and south Texas. They have good prices and usually a very good selection of items depending on the demographics near a store. After living in Texas and going to HEB most of my life I'm shocked at what people call grocery stores in other states.

275 So how much would Blagojevich have had to steal to make his 14-year-sentence worth it? Using the Jackson standard of $13,157.89 a month, the answer is $2,210,525.52. So, if Jackson had actually raised $5 million, Blago should have kept just under half.

Then she busted out laughing and asked, "are you perhaps a little paranoid about it?" "After three fill valves," I huffed, "it ain't paranoia anymore."

But Big 12 has Texas (and a Grant of Rights). ACC is the weak sister of the big 5. Big Ten Network is a gold mine. SEC Network will be so as well. Really hard for ACC to compete with that. ACC is caught between the Big Ten and SEC. To survive, ACC killed off the Big East. But the threat is still there.

479 Good evening. I'm skimming that article on wolves and I disagree. I think if wolves/dogs self-domesticated they'd show a ar greater degree of independence. Think of felines. Cats stuck around humans as a matter of convenience. The author argues humans didn't need wolves but then neither did wolves need humans. Further, the later clash of species, humans eliminating wolves, would seem to come well after human beings settled down and began raising animals for slaughter. In other words, humans began actively killing wolves only *after* human farms came under threat from wolves. Now wolves self-domesticating is *plausible*, certainly, but I don't think it's likely.

488 The dogs/human thing seems clearly to be co-evolution. Over a long period of time we both adapted to each other. Dogs evolved along with early hunter-gatherer humans. Cats evolved along with early agricultural humans. It was only when we started living in towns and cities with large food stores that cats became so useful to limit rodents.

500 I think Portman is a lying piece of shit 1. He doesn't find out that his kid is gay until he is in college and tells him? 2. His kid tells him he is gay and his concern is immediately SSM? 3. Because his kid is gay we have to redefine to institution of marriage to suit him? All total bulllshit. Portman is planning on running in 2016 and thinks this will help him. He planned his big revelation to tie in with cpac because he thought it would get him more press. I think he should go fuck himself.

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at March 15, 2013 11:51 PM (ZPrif) That's true regardless, I think. Humans and dogs, and humans and cats, and humans and horses and parrots and camels and cows and chickens have all lived together long enough that we're all adapted to each other. The author rightly pointed out that humans understand a dog's body language better than a human understands a chimpanzee's even though a chimp is more closely related.

Is there another small wire going to the motherboard from the PS?  If so, that would probably be a "power good" signal.  A PS can be wasted and still delivering shitty power to the big connector, but the power good signal will be a no-go.

Yow is now working her magic at NC State. After firing Friedgen(sp?) for winning coach of the year, then running Gary Williams out, she left the athletic department deep in the red. So NC State thought it would be a good idea to hire her and work her magic. So, she fires Tom O'Brien after he took the team to several straight bowl games, and now is on the hook for his salary while he is the OC at UVa for the next several years.

Don't let all the fame and glory go to your heads, Ace-oids, but, yeah, congratulations, I suppose, if I gotta be sincere, darnit shucks. Who did you bribe? By the way, did you know there are long, rambling, computer-generated texts posted during the day under the "Ace" pseudonym? I just found that out recently. I know Ace is just one of those made-up characters, a kind of Alfred E Newman running gag on the blog, and here I find there are, like, a bunch of words posted under his name. 619 Political Hat: 1. Don't use a screwdriver to short pins. Just... don't. 2. Don't buy anything at Fry's that they touched. i.e. no custom things, open-box or returns. 3. What brand and model is the Power Supply? They can flake quite unpredictably. It's also the think people scrimp on when they shouldn't. 4. Unfortunately the lowest Mobo price I'm seeing is $150-160 for an LGA-2011 (like yours, that's the socket type not model number). If you didn't get a motherboard manual, download one from the website. There should be reset instructions and full pinouts (sometimes the pins, particularly the power/lights/reset pins, are not well-labeled. After you've verified the pin connections, try unplugging all power (from mobo) and removing the battery (CR2032 between the CPU and the PCIE slot) for 30 minutes. Full BIOS reset. Wild guess since it runs sometimes I'd say power supply most likely.

651 Startup draws more power and control circuitry can flake out.

Components like caps/resistors/diodes drift a bit as they age and/or get really hot.  Usually the engineers will spec that the components used should be in a 5/10/whatever percent range of nominal for a design to function properly.  If the parts actually assembled are all on the low end of acceptable tolerance, eventual failure is almost certain.

If a design called for 10% tolerance parts, and the manufacturer actually used 5% tolerance parts, then there's a lot of room for drift in component specs before the thing misbehaves.

Tight tolerance parts are of course more expensive, so that sort of thing doesn't happen too often.

It used to be that parts were tested prior to assembly on boards (all the old IBM PS/2's were done this way)...that's no longer the case, because its expensive to test individual components.  Now they're just assembling the board, and MAYBE doing board level testing if you're lucky.  Some just slap the whole mess together in a PC and see if it powers up and ship it.

All the old PS/2's spent 3 days in an environmental chamber getting hit with heat/cold shock/vibe all the while running a full system diagnostic.  Only after they passed that did they go in the box.

Nobody does that kinda shit anymore.

I had picked up a nice dual-core x64 curbside PC that was "dead" the other day.  The mem stick that was supplying the lower 640K of memory was fucked.  The thing wouldn't even POST because the BIOS bootstrap some functioning RAM to do its thing...it ain't much, but if the first stick is bad, you're going nowhere and it won't even initialize the display or emit diagnostic beeps.  The thing will seem stone dead.

Was also about as good of security as a boot password. People walking up to the machine would be baffled as to how it turned on.

One thing I've run into over the years is static charge buildup in the PSU. Can make the system completely inert. Apple Mac towers came with a button on the PSU to fix the condition but its pretty rare on PC gear.

This is the one bit of equip in a self-built PC that you shouldn't look for the cheapest available.

It's more future-proof than almost any other component, and cheap crap will cause nightmares.

Wouldn't put much stock in a newspaper article from then. It was never among the articles listed. Swiped? Dunno, sounds a bit dodgy. With hindsight, it sounds feasible, but, really? Amongst the aftermath of the titanic, some crewman just decides... "I'll have that... yoink!" A sea soaked violin? What was he doing with it, anyway? The ship's going down, he's looking death in the face and he decides to pack up the violin and strap it to his body, or something? Whatever floatation it might provide is going to be more than offset by it as an encumberance. A cello, maybe, but a violin? It just seems to be pushing believeability in the final seconds of the sinking. It not showing up, at all, before now? It doesn't add up. I'm not dismissing what you're saying. Anything's possible, I guess. It wouldn't be that hard to put together a con for this, considering the potential payoff.

I'd put it this way: You're going to change the MoBo and CPU every few years. All you need is a pair that is stable. Cheap is ok if others have bought the combo and posted positive reviews online.

CPU
You only have two choices: Intel or AMD. AMD's cheaper. Intel is more expensive. Not much to think about there.

RAM
Ram is hella cheap if you're not looking for overclocked, multi-colored, anodized spangle-ware. Again, look for stable products.

It gets worse the more you experience it. If you prepared tax returns in 1989 (I did) and see a similar situation in a 2012 return, wouldn't you want to treat it the same way? Bzzzzzzt!!! The more experience you have with prior tax regimes, the WORSE you are when dealing with current ones, 'cause they'll inevitably be conflated in your mind.

OTOH, you do gain some canniness when it comes to long-term planning. You'll have seen the various ways the IRS has attacked a specific issue, and you may be able to design something resistant to multiple attack vectors. But it takes a certain subtlety to understand the difference between "what do I do now?" and "what approach should I take now and in the future?"

Posted by: cthulhu at March 15, 2013 11:10 PM (kaalw)

759 I had picked up a nice dual-core x64 curbside PC that was "dead" the other day. Posted by: @PurpAv at March 16, 2013 02:10 AM (mNCbk) Checking for a bad ram stick in one of the first thing I try. It's a bit of a specialty backwater in literature. There's an odd combination of florid Victorian prose with a weirdly minimalist investigation of "what is horror?"

Posted by: cthulhu at March 15, 2013 11:54 PM (kaalw)

803 One of these days I'm going to talk Ace into allowing me to moderate a ongoing weekend thread.  On prog-rock/art-rock/postpunk...or Indo-European language change.

804 Although you may not have read any of Lovecraft, there is a good chance you've gotten the experience secondhand from writers paying homage or satirizing the old weirdo from my Mom's home town, although I hear he lives in Pine Cove, CA these days.

810 One of the aspects to Lovecraft is how much disclosure there is of the inner workings. It's almost like Penn + Teller's cups and balls -- they show you how it's done -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbSRKn1Ot9A .

815 'Agend' is a curtailed 'agenda', of course, since it features 2 sets of timing instead of 3, the syllables mimicking the number of timing runs.

Certainly not a typo.

Staffel 3? Isn't 'Staffel' German for squadron? Shouldn't this be Witzgeschwader 3?

Posted by: Waterhouse at March 16, 2013 12:44 AM (p3Bj4)

824 Would you like to take the time to explain what exactly that phrase means?

Program (or OS itself) crashes and all of memory is written to the disk so someone can try to sift through the wreckage later and try and find out why it blew up.

Real OS's usually include a dump formatting utility that will assist in the postmortem groveling through that file.

Its a real primitive scheme for the very stout of heart with a LOT of time on their hands.

These days, you'd try debugging with a debug kernel that talks to a PC running a terminal emulator through a COM port before you'd go to a core dump.

Debugging core dumps is your absolute last resort for problems that only happen on retail kernels...before you break out the hardware ICE debuggers and scopes/logic probes...which cost REALLY BIG CASH.
