Overnight Open Thread (15 Nov 2013)
— CDR M

You know, when more people have signed a petition to build the Death Star than your precious healthcare boondongle, you might want to just stop what you're doing.

The petition, which received 34,435 signatures, demolished health care in signups, which was starkly lower at a mere 26,794. ThatÂ’s a difference of 7,641.

In response to the Death Star petition, the White House actually took the time to write out a lengthy response entitled “This Isn’t the Petition You’re Looking For.” The 500-word response included such ironic statements as, “Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw…?” Take out “Death Star” and insert “health care law,” and you have something the President should have been asking himself several years ago. Except that his health care law has more than just “a” fundamental flaw.

Image h/t Haunted House?

Ever wonder if someone died in the house you live/lived in? Well, someone has started up a website (for a fee) to let you know if someone has. Even with new construction, there could've been a death in the house. A house a few houses down from me was new construction and no one had lived in it but I soon found out that the builder of the house, being so distraught over the real estate implosion, hung himself in the house. I don't know if the people that did buy it ever found out.

Peak Leonid shower this weekend. Viewing possibilities don't look so good for a lot of the country though.

Ice Building and Fire Codes

Seems a bit silly. Sweden's Ice Hotel told to get fire alarms.

What would you do?

Alright morons. The love of your life makes you take a lie detector test every time you go out to check that you have been faithful. And screens your email. Your phone. Everything. Is that cool? Yes? No? I denounce myself but I sure as hell wouldn't do it for this lady. For Kate Upton? In a heartbeat.

Somewhat related. tmi3rd sends in this very disturbing link of the 38 most unexplainable images on the web. Is that Helen Thomas in the first pic?

90 Placed in the wrong open thread; transported here:

Obama's permission for sale of previously approved plans cannot fly. Why? Because the plans have to be approved by the state regulators, and they cannot approve plans that are illegal even if the president will not prosecute. Why? Because the states will prosecute if an illegal plan is sold - they would have to unless all of the states waived and they will not do so. (See politics for this - and administrators not getting themselves caught in a legal bind.)

That is why his threat to veto the Upton bill cancels out his offer of non-prosecution. The Upton bill would make the non-ACA plans legal and thus could be sold once re-approved by the states. But if the plans remain illegal they cannot be made legal by the states to sell in the states. The ACA remains in effect, though not enforced, and thus the states cannot make legal what is still illegal.

See teh Medical Pot Law stuff for how all of that actually plays out.

He inserted to horizontal rods in his chest that stay for three years, like braces on your teeth. Tiny incisions, until you se the xrays. It is amazing, but a very painful recovery. Lots of narcotics necessary.

I'm beginning to think it's about the right time to propose a Constitutional Amendment that the Feds can have no part of health care. The DEA, CDC, Medicare, FDA, HHS, NIH, and all the rest should either be abolished outright, or split into two agencies with an advisory or licensing function and cut loose from the government.

As an example of how that might work, let's take the FDA's role in licensing new drugs -- and divide into FDA1 and FDA2. Then let drug manufacturers decide which they wanted to use (if any) -- I would guess that bidding for drug companies' business would make testing much more cost-efficient. Finally, would you prefer to take a generic statin approved by FDA1 or FDA2 if FDA1 had 3x as many recalls for tainted medications?

Well, in 6 years we've had 2 dealings with WakeMed. Once was when I almost cut off my mom's thumb changing a lawnmower blade, and they wanted her to wait 6 hours to take out the stitches. 298 197 Need some advice from the horde. Funemployment starts in one week. Buy health insurance now or not? Posted by: SpongeBobSaget at November 15, 2013 11:48 PM (kxSZr) If you're healthy buy now. Get a plan from United Health Care or Aetna, they are going to keep them going through 2014 (UHC would like to go longer but they're not guaranteeing it yet). Stay far away from exchange plans, you'd be safer emailing your bank account number and password to a Nigerian email scammer; buying off exchange won't necessarily be bad, just expensive. The window to do what I've just suggested closes 12/10 for Aetna, 12/15 with UHC (12/31 if you're insured now).

I figure the next two shoes to drop are when someone actually dies in January from losing insurance, and when people realize they have to find a new doctor.

317 So, I got into an argument with a lefty on a friend's Facebook page today. He's a conservative/libertarian type, but he's also gay so some of his friends seem to be real leftards. It was like trying to nail jello to the wall, he didn't just move the goalposts, he was teleporting them all over the stadium. "Insurance companies do X" "No, they don't, they can't, here's why" "It's easy to be critical, why don't you have a solution?" "I do, I'd do this (X,Y and Z)" "Exchange plans are not more expensive for less coverage" "Here's plan X now, would cost a 30 year old $85/month. Here's plan Y on the exchange, same deductible, less coverage, $163." "Well, at least now more people will have insurance" "In 6 weeks, 5 million have lost their insurance, 100K have signed up" And so on. Another mutual friend pitched in "Dude, don't get so worked up", I replied: "LOL. Dan, I'm not wound up. I realized long ago that you can't change someone's mind using facts if they didn't reach their conclusions logically. However, presenting those facts and calling libtards out on their lies is still important because third parties who are not emotionally invested in the Chicago Jesus need to see them, and they need to know that the pabulum they are being force fed by the establishment and MSM is just so much BS. Never let a leftist lie go unchallenged, see Cuccinelli, Ken." I really believe that last part, many times I think "why bother" when I run across proggy BS, but it really is important to counter it. Not for the proggy, they're lost causes, but for the 10 people observing but not participating. That's why I beat that guy like a rented mule. Nicely. With facts.

He was in the ICU weeks ago and the were doing renovations & construction in our offices, in five phase. The fourth phase was where I sit and they didnÂ’t know on Friday where weÂ’d be the next week, Monday they told me they had no place for me and to work from home Thursday & Friday. I told my boss that my brother is in the ICU for 1st time since April and I was going to ME. I went October 23 and stayed through Friday, he was still in the hospital. He looked good and I must have done him good because Saturday he called to tell me he moved his left big toe under his control and Sunday it was all his toes. He was back at the ER last Friday but they dintÂ’ keep him. HeÂ’s making progress with moving! Nail the first thing they say to the ground, and then be overly-kind. Force the original point; insurance companies cannot win in a ad-hoc, government-nationalized system. Of course, FB isn't the be forum for bare-knuckle fighting. It's a venue for silo-thought. Your original friend ain't going to read any of your extended arguments. Especially after the 'libtard' part. Yes, they barf up worse. Yes, they are vile creatures Lenin would be embarrassed to be associated with. Point being, what is the goal? Are you trying to shame your friend? Are you trying to get him to whip out his dick for a contest? Don't. Kill the first argument. Shame the next dissembling remark with the faintest of praise. 372 Sort of related to a real conversation going on in here.

Many years ago my step-father bought a horse that had not been trained to the saddle.  He swore that he was going to "break" the horse, and once saddle trained resell for a profit.

First time up on the horse it rolled over on him and tore his knee up pretty good.  Soft cast for six weeks and he never did "break" that horse.

My most favorite horse ever.

We are doing another rescue. This will be the farthest we have ever had to ship a rescue if we end up able to do it, because hes in Maine. Everyone pray that hes as gentle and kind as they say, and not sick, because hes been in real trouble, and this horse is my Favourite mares first colt. I delivered him myself one summer night, and he was really special, meant to be a breeding stallion. But someone gelded and sold him a few years ago, and now hes changed hands six times in three years and the poor thing has been starved, in the pound for neglect, Poisoned, picked up as a possible show horse, and sold to a dealer then on to a summer camp, to give lessons to little girls. Im trying to get him home. If any you all wanna pray for a horse, pray for this one to have a Happily ever after as a pampered pet belonging to a generous lady. He just has to be quiet and gentle.

443 Christmas decorating starts on the day after Thanksgiving. I do not give two shits if it's going to be 70 degrees on the weekend before and ten degrees on the weekend after. Christmas is not special if you're sick of it by December 24th. Don't rush me, dammit, and get off my lawn.

444 And speaking of disturbing images, God help me, I clicked on the dolphin and the headless fish thing. Why. Why. Not enough booze to block out the images, or to wonder... did it bite the head off the fish on purpose? Shudder.

445 Watching Hannity's panel while reading here. It's reassuring there are some sane people around. But the libs on there are fucking insane. I had it on but did not listen. I saw Geraldo Rivera once tonight and that turned on my mute button! HeÂ’s one of several that have to go on FNC. I am trying to stay awake long enough to watch last nightÂ’s, well now ThursdayÂ’s GreyÂ’s Anatomy.

446 Indoor Christmas decorating doesn't start until after Thanksgiving.  The "Outdoor Shit" starts, (basement-testing), after Halloween.

Precisely. The same should be true of store displays, IMO. Right now we should be seeing lots of fucking gourds ( http://tinyurl.com/3qj4ygu ) instead of Santa stuff.

A cat from Sardinia? After reading "The Monster of Florence" I got the idea that Sardinians were like the hillbillies of Italy (or the sterotype people have of hillbillies). Not much in the way of art or cuisine (unlike Sicily, which has that going for it), just a bunch of crazy clans doing illegal stuff, including occasionally killing each other.

Apologies to anybody of Sardinian descent. I'm sure the cat's a fine cat.

457 When I was a baby my mother had me in our yard in my carriage. A cat jumped on it & scared me and scarred me. I was petrified of all animals until one of my cousinÂ’s cat had babies. I didnÂ’t know this until three years ago, but my late Mother called my cousin to ask if I could go pick out a kitten. I did, I always thought it was my Father who loved pets, that wanted the cat, it was my Mother.

462 I have had four kittens and one dog. Of the four kittens, one was female, the other three were male. We had litter box & the only one that would use it was female cat. She died in 1995. All summer long that carpet smells like cat urine since we had to put my mother in a nursing home in 2005, my Mother must have done something for ten years to get rid of that smell. I have tried vinegar, throwing dryer sheets in that area, and every thing else but having carpet torn out. Does anyone have a new idea? I need a new roof., in addition to mortgage & car payments so cash is an issue.

468 Very happy to see that my new oven control unit timer counts down the minutes and seconds when under 1 hour. My old one only counted down minutes until it got under 1 minute, and then it would count down seconds.

The scope went on the Arisaka with a minimum of modifications to the mount totaling $15 worth of work and it's ready for a range session to zero the scope.

The wheels on the 'stang are fixed and they look good.

I got the trim on the corner of the house hung and painted last weekend.

I still need a windshield in the Subaru, but all in all things around the Refuge are in pretty good shape.

475 After deciding my brain was too small to follow all those Chess threads, I'm travelling now in a time zone where I can follow this World Championship match, and I'm enjoying the heck out of it. I can even understand why they're doing  what they do, sometimes.

Maybe live chess is easier to enjoy than walking through a past match, where the temptation is to fast forward.
