So what do you think morons? Do you prefer bottled or canned beer? I've always preferred bottled but two of my favorite beers come in cans (Guiness and Murphy's Irish Stout). This article, why canned beer is way better than bottled beer seems to focus on secondary benefits of canned beer and largely avoids how it tastes which in my view is most important. Of course, we've all had those moments where we don't care if it's in a can, bottle or cup as long as we had a beer, regardless of label.

Interesting. 'Vortex Surfing' could save military millions. Of course, just using regular jet fuel would save even more instead of the more expensive biofuel crap.
It's an aerial maneuver known as "vortex surfing" where cargo planes in a V formation ride the cyclone of upward pressure that spills off the wings of another plane flying roughly 3,000 feet in front. Special software developed for the large C-17 Globemaster III, allows the trailing plane to stay in the sweet spot of an upward draft, providing significant fuel savings.
Just don't let Asiana Airlines try this.

Weather Conspiracies
Heh. I had just recently heard of the conspiracy related to HAARP (High Frequency Active Aural Research Program) and have heard what seems like forever about airplane contrails. Nice to see this debunked.
The idea that aircraft that produce contrails are really spraying “chemtrails” is preposterous on its face. Airlines mostly operate based on the weight of the aircraft. The weight of the passengers, cargo, and luggage onboard is crucial for both determining how much fuel is onboard, which ultimately determines how much they pay to fill the tanks, as well as the balance of the aircraft in flight. If the plane is too heavy or the weight is distributed incorrectly, it could crash.Liquids are heavy. One gallon of jet fuel weighs approximately 6.7 pounds. Take a Boeing 747-400, for example: a fully-loaded 747 flying from London to Hong Kong would require almost a full tank of gas – somewhere between 50,000 and 60,000 gallons of fuel. That’s upwards of 370,000 pounds of fuel in the tanks. Between the weight of the fuel, the passengers, the cargo, and the luggage onboard, there’s simply no room left for “chemtrail” chemicals even if they did want to spray us all with toxic gunk.
Some people who believe in the chemtrail conspiracy theories also swear by spraying distilled vinegar up in the air, claiming that the vinegar ascends thousands of feet in just minutes to neutralize a sky full of these wispy clouds. A quick search of “chemtrail” and “vinegar” on YouTube brings up over 3,800 hilarious videos of people seriously trying this.
Remember, these same folks believe in global warming.
Irony Alert
TSA employee gropes passengers. Standard operating procedure baby. TSA employee gropes fellow TSA employee? Alert the police! Red flag! TSA employee accused of inappropriate contact with fellow co-worker. Honest your honor, I was just practicing techniques required to do my job.

The Burning Penis Alibi

Yeah right. Peppermint oil burned my penis forcing me to drop trou and show my junk to fellow airline passengers.
Clarke--who initially flew from Amsterdam to Minneapolis and then on to Salt Lake City--claimed that he had a headache in the Netherlands. To ease the pain, “he decided to rub ‘peppermint oil’ on his forehead,” Christensen reported. Clarke apparently believed that the oil could be used as a topical pain reliever. After applying the peppermint oil, Clarke claimed that he “went to the toilet.” While in the airplane lavatory, Clarke said, “I obviously touched my privates,” adding that he must have transferred peppermint oil to his penis since he “felt burning afterwards.”
GPS Jamming
Relatively easy and cheap to do but probably not the wisest thing to do near an airport. N.J. man fined $32K for illegal GPS device that disrupted Newark airport system. So a big fine and loss of his job just so he could avoid having his boss track his movements in the truck. Dumbass. UPDATE: Newark airport might have other issues as 3 aircraft hit with lasers on approach.
In related news, it looks like they are finally making some progress on making our UAVs less susceptible to GPS jamming/spoofing. NAVAIR team tests anti-jamming device for UAVs.

Joey Choo-Choo hardest hit.
Though the judge did decline to actually stop the project. Saying he wasn't sure if he had the authority to do so. So that means it's full speed ahead on the Rocket Train To Nowhere! This is so exciting!
The original Brown Streak proposal was meant to run between Borden and Corcoran. Or as locals said, to travel at 200 MPH between a place no one knows the location of, and a place no one would ever want to visit.
They've tinkered that up a bit now for the sake of the optics. It's still a huge disastrous mess that throws tens of billions down the toilet. Oh, and if you pay federal taxes (a few Americans still do), the majority of the money thus being flushed away is yours. This is Obama "stimulus" funding. Yep, they're still at that.

Chip, it embedded itself just ahead of the slide and broke some wood off.
He claims I got it stuck there because when I tilted the gun and it didn't fall off, I assumed it was a jam and pulled the slide to clear it.
While I guess that's possible, I tipped the gun first and it didn't move so I think the damage was done, but maybe I screwed up, who knows.

I've heard of distant cousins going through the same thing, but there is something else wrong with them. They're all either dead, in jail or practicing their "religion", still.
ONE of about twelve cousins has recovered. One uncle, as well. The rest are lost causes, immune to reason and prayer. I'm sorry to say it, but I can't pacify the users any longer. Some used to be fun, but they've gone well past that now.

The thing is Flatbush Joe, a nice ribeye does taste better than McDonald's. A good piece of artisan cheese does taste better than CheezWhiz. Fresh salmon is much more expensive than salmon out a can - and it tastes better. I pay more for thick-cut bacon I buy from a butcher in rural Wisconsin because it's spoiled me and now I don't like the cheap stuff in the supermarket so much.
No, I can't stand people being pretentious snobs and sneering at others for not having refined taste. But there's also a reverse snobbery that gets to me too - the reverse snobbery that says there is no such thing as difference in quality and it's hoity-toity to say that something is better than something else.
I've found that "you get what you pay for" is true - within reasonable limits. That is, a nice leather purse from Macy's will last a lot longer than some plastic piece of crap from WalMart, but a purse that costs $36,000, like the one Oprah wanted to check out in Switzerland, can't be thousands of times better than the purse from Macy's - because it's just a goddamn purse.

Yeah, I don't know what to make of that. It's good on the one hand, but, kind of "so close, yet so far away" sort of thing. I hope they're just keeping their cards close to their chest and are just giving us "tells" about who's in it and what's going to happen. J-Roc in jail looks to be on the cards. Maybe Trevor was a no show but Corey said yes. But, Corey without Trevor is like dumb without ass. Dunno. But having the whole crew back would go a long way in making the new season awesome.

Seen it before a thousand times. The feral cats keep 'em in check, and then some doofus traps the feral cats, and the moles kill the gardens. Not a pretty sight."

Hmm, well if its the fluted corners I remember, there "might" be a way to overlap a section of 4" corner onto a 4" corner to "extend" it, as in cut a width off of one 4" corner and overlay it onto a full 4" corner.

Aren't flutes usually cut with a router?
Posted by: The Hickster at August 17, 2013 12:55 AM (7Bfxw)
If you're cutting miles of 'em, you can get a flute on a table saw by rigging up a fence that isn't square to the blade and cranking the blade down to the intended depth of flute. If you attach that to your real fence, you can get flutes every, say, 3/4" as fast as you can push lumber (push board, move fence 3/4", push board...). You can also get custom widths by just changing the angle to the blade rather than buying new router bits....

The suckage, it burns! I would think that it'd be the better product -- especially, as TR is hinting, if you're getting the 40-days-and-40-nights treatment -- and that it would regularly be offered. 3-4" is bupkis, when water is concerned.
I probably don't need to mention this, but if I were building a custom 7" corner on my house to install over the ends of siding, I would caulk the everlovin' shit out of the actual space between the boards, probably after I put it together, 'cause if water got in there and rotted the corner boards -- meh......but if water got in behind and started getting inside the walls.....urk!

Picture if you were running a board entirely cross-wise to the saw blade. Saw blade is circular, ja? So you get a flat arc with a radius of 1/2 your blade size. Now mentally run the board at a 45-degree angle -- you get a narrower arc with the same depth that wouldn't be quite circular in cross section, more like half an oval.
Keep pushing that angle closer and closer to the angle of the saw blade, and it closes and closes....until it becomes a straight line when you're exactly parallel.
They're rounded because they're a sideways projection of a round blade in 3D space.

Hold a blade up and look at it edge on, then rotate it a bit side to side. You'll get roundy/parabolic looking flutes of varying depth and width depending on how you set the blade depth and angle.

There is an anecdote I have trotted out time and time again in a huge variety of work situations: "Give a knowledgeable carpenter a pile of lumber and some manual hand tools, and he can build you a house in eight months; give a garden-variety hack a pile of lumber and some manual hand tools, and he can give you a pile of firewood in eight months......give the carpenter power tools, and he can build you a house in eight weeks; give the hack power tools and in eight weeks, you'll have........firewood."

The thing about any molding is you need to be able to do a little math and know how to cope the long pieces to match an uneven surface.
Running cast in place continuous plaster crowns is a whole'nuther deal though. I had a neighbor who used to do that shit on historic restoration jobs. He was like one of two guys in the whole greater Albany NY area who could do it and not fuck it up. If you wanted real plaster walls, he was the guy too.

There are a variety of reasons to seek and avoid "recreational" drugs, just as there are a variety of reasons to seek and avoid "recreational" tools of other sorts. If you own a chainsaw and use it for feral cats on your property, you are a monster -- but if you use it to keep your weakened tree from toppling, you are a hero.
I went through a period in my later adolescence where I rearranged a bunch of things....in large part, because I was a worthless little shit in my early teens. Part of this involved "recreational" drug use where I could peel back layers and get past the crafted "image" that was run by the crafted "persona" that was run by the "me" that was driven by my id. Others around me took the same drugs at the same time in the same way and damned near lost their "me" in the process.
Like damned near everything else in life, drugs are both potentially useful and dangerous. Unfortunately, BOTH SIDES in the drug war have been seriously flailing to avoid facing reality. Timothy Leary's "Tune In, Turn On, Drop Out" was the absolute height of irresponsibility -- whereas "zero tolerance" is the ne-plus-ultra of unthinking sloganeering. It's not a coincidence that "Reefer Madness" and "Cheech and Chong's Up In Smoke" are both considered comedies.

After a certain point, my college GPA quarter-by-quarter was inversely proportional to my drug use.....because when I used drugs, I didn't fight the indoctrination as much and just mocked it privately. I honestly believe that it made me more of a realist and more responsible in the long run.....but it was certainly not for everyone.
Remember the movie version of Pink Floyd's The Wall? Where Pink starts arranging little chains of things around his place -- like cigarette papers all in a line across the carpet, or paperclips in squares on the desk? My college roommate was starting to do that. Another girl I knew decided that she wanted "expert" supervision to try something with a relatively low-key stoner [not, BTW, the worst idea -- he was very mellow and the door was open] and ended up totally freaked-out.
The problem is just the same as if you'd randomly give table saws to 1/500 of the families in the US. They can be useful, there's nifty tricky shit you can do with 'em, half the people are going to use them as doorstops, and a significant percentage of the rest will end up amputating something.

a lot of it comes back to genre and purpose.
jazz -- Parker, Coltrane, Miles Davis and the rest of the beboppers -- they played fast. But it required a certain taste that is usually acquired.
bar bands -- your purpose is to get ladies to want to dance. ladies don't actually make bar owners any money, but men go where ladies are and men make bar owners money. tunes played too fast are not appealing to those that dance.
head bangers -- can't be explained anyway so I am not going to try.

If the machine only has one USB channel (i.e. you look and see there's only one root hub), multiple drives with SSD is probably not a big performance win due to the near instantaneous seek times).
If the box has multiple independent channels and can be sucking data from them simultaneously, then it could be a win.
With Windows or Linux multiple drives is pretty easy as well as multiple partitions within those drives.
A windows or linux scratch install will give the option of some sort of "advanced" drive setup -- that's what you'll want to be choosing to do the drive partitioning and selecting the OS install drive/partitions.
On anything other than a laptop, I usually try to setup at least 3 drives on independent channels or controllers. Basic OS install on one, dedicated swap/paging on another, and the 3rd for random app crap. If its a SCSI system where adding drives is easy, I'll dedicate one drive to TEMP and browser temp files too.
With only two SSD drives, I'd partition the apps/crap drive in three partitions and dedicate one to apps and crap, another to general temp (i.e. where the TEMP/TMP environment variable is pointed), and another to internet browser temp crap. This is probably more critical on rotating media, but it'll keep the app install and app data files less likely to get fragged making a disaster recovery easier since more shit would be contiguous.
I presume the box is capable of booting from external media?

I strongly suspect that animals "spill" a certain amount of their intake -- as in, it's never digested in the first place. Couple of data points on that -- coprophagia [ask your dog about your cats' litter box], beer shits. Anyway, the standard weight loss model says, "put fewer calories in your pie-hole"....but what if they knew enough to modify the spill? What if "drink beer with everything you eat, 'cause it'll cause 25% of the calories to leave your bunghole the next day instead of being attached to your 'love handles'" was reasonable advice?
The fact is, the whole "30 calories per day" thing is wildly misleading -- it's less than a quarter of a slice of bread, and is not even measurable in the greater scheme of things. The body has ways of maintaining a certain weight and will deal with +/- 30 calorie swings without blimping up or withering away....but our friends in the medical biz say that it's all about pumpin' iron or counting calories.

Or, to put this another way -- nutrition science is built on a model that gives large emphasis on two factors: caloric intake and exercise. Simple common sense would indicate that these are not the most important factors determining weight gain or loss, except in extreme cases.
It's very similar to -- global climate science is built on a model that gives large emphasis on one factor, CO2 level in the atmosphere. Simple common sense would indicate that this is not the most important factor determining global warming or cooling, except in extreme cases.

I'll save you some money -- all those "special foods" diets, where you have to buy from their plan? Pick ANY food and eat it 3x per week and you'll lose weight. Pick carefully, though, 'cause this relies on your brain sayin' (on fourth and future times), "yuck, XXXXX again????"
If there was ever anything that you'd avoid eating because it made you feel full and overstuffed for a time -- eat more of that [for me, it's eggs].
Posted by: cthulhu at August 16, 2013 11:40 PM (T1005)
There's no one size fits all approach to high performance boxes.
A gaming machine will be differently setup than something doing drug interaction modeling, which would be setup differently than some application that's very disk I/O or LAN intensive (like an internet web server).
Even things like CPU choice aren't cut and dried. Some memory and CPU intensive apps (like drug modeling) would do well with multiple CPU's and cores, with huge L1's and L2's like the Intel server class CPU's have, as well as stuffing them full of memory.
For general internet usage, those CPU's are just a waste of money.
It all depends on the usage profile you expect and what you want to spend. A bitching 8-way server chassis with tricked out hot plugable CPU's, memory, drives, etc can demolish money faster than you can blink...but that's what you'd want for a high reliability high performance internet server. Not necessarily what you'd want for gaming though...

You'd want a box with a shitload of memory AND the most honking server class CPU with the hugest L1 and L2 caches you can get, and the fastest memory subsystem you can get.
A hit in a L1 cache is several times faster than an L2 hit, which is several times faster than a main memory access. The L1 hit versus main memory access difference is usually in the 10X faster range.

Supplement that with as many pickles as you want, and as much lettuce as you want. They're essentially calorie free. No mayo, too many calories, use mustard or sprinkle black pepper on the sammich.

I wish I could disagree. A decade, two decades ago, I rejoiced that we had learned enough to avoid serious debacles like socialism, socialized medicine, use of the state against points of view, the panopticon, and monetization of unimaginable over-promises.....but here we are.

Not having to worry about video performance helps a lot. Other than load/save times which are disk intensive, spreadsheets are gonna be CPU and memory thrashers

I have lots of books, especially books about the history of aviation and space flight. I keep getting the nagging feeling that I should get busy sealing them in plastic and burying them in lead-lined boxes.

A few years back, there was a thing about Amazon (IIRC) retroactively changing the text on already-sold ebooks that really gave me a jolt. I'd love the convenience of everything being electronic, but I'm worried that it will have a negative effect on my status as "Keeper of The Knowledge" when TSHTF.

makes me wonder what was really in the library @ Alexandria.
Given the reality of what a glacial age might be like I have a nagging wonder whether humans have advanced in great ways in the past and it is all just lost to us because only stone survives -- and not without metamorphosis, degradation, and re-sedimentation.

They're only going to survive intact if the structures have 7" corners from Revere.
In other words, we're totally fucked.

I'm a big proponent of high quality "trailing edge" tech for video and motherboards. All the quirks are well understood, drivers have stabilized, and any necessary firmware updates to actually make it work are out.
Shit's so complex these days, testing it, really testing it, is almost impossible. At best they wind up sampling and shipping something that appears to work on their tests. It takes a lot of soak time out in the field at thousands of sites with different configurations for all the latent issues to get shaken out.

With respect, CDR M,
the correct question isn't bottled v. canned beer,
it is all about draft beer.
Respectfully,
