Oh hell no. Intel Watching You Watch TV.
The most intriguing element of the box is the built-in camera that monitors viewers and is designed to give advertisers a better insight into who is watching their shows. Originally it appeared this would simply capture crude information such as an estimate of the gender and age of viewers. Now Intel is talking about the idea of using facial recognition as a way for individual viewers to automatically “log in” to a personal account on the box. The idea is that if you sit in front of the screen alone, the box can make viewing recommendations or show a favorite channels list based on your personal viewing history.
Now Intel says this feature can be turned off, but I'm sure it can be turned back on via other means without you knowing. Plus, it might be a tad embarrassing if your pron playlist comes up when you have company. Blown By The Bone

Grading On The Curve
Haha. Live by the curve, die by the curve. Students Boycott Final To Challenge Professors Grading Policy And Get A's.
As the semester ended in December, students in Fröhlich’s "Intermediate Programming", "Computer System Fundamentals," and "Introduction to Programming for Scientists and Engineers" classes decided to test the limits of the policy, and collectively planned to boycott the final. Because they all did, a zero was the highest score in each of the three classes, which, by the rules of Fröhlich’s curve, meant every student received an A.“The students refused to come into the room and take the exam, so we sat there for a while: me on the inside, they on the outside,” Fröhlich said. “After about 20-30 minutes I would give up.... Then we all left.” The students waited outside the rooms to make sure that others honored the boycott, and were poised to go in if someone had. No one did, though.

Don't know about fiber optics, but I know on the old wooden sailing ships they have glass prisms set into the deck that would capture light and diffuse it down belowdecks. Of course that only works for the second deck (second is the one right below the weatherdeck, which is the one open to the weather, also known as the first deck). Below that you're back down to lanterns.

Can't recall their trade name but do a Bing search on light tubes. Someone actually did answer your post downthread. I've seen them frequently in residential applications. They work well. I don't know what the conduit transmitting the light is, but it's about a foot wide and as long as it needs to be to get to the roof. Transmits daylight into a regular looking ceiling light fixture as long as the sun is up.

I must admit to being intrigued by the technical aspects. How could you capture such a shot without the photographer immediately setting himself on fire? I suppose you could do a remote, but you would still have to develop the film. Forget electronics, that shit would burn out the receptors immediately.

Petraeus allowed that these household spy devices “change our notions of secrecy” and prompt a rethink of “our notions of identity and secrecy.” All of which is true — if convenient for a CIA director.
The CIA has a lot of legal restrictions against spying on American citizens. But collecting ambient geolocation data from devices is a grayer area, back in march or so of last year

More and more personal and household devices are connecting to the internet, from your television to your car navigation systems to your light switches. CIA Director David Petraeus cannot wait to spy on you through them.
Earlier this month, Petraeus mused about the emergence of an “Internet of Things” — that is, wired devices — at a summit for In-Q-Tel, the CIA’s venture capital firm “‘Transformational’ is an overused word, but I do believe it properly applies to these technologies,” Petraeus enthused, “particularly to their effect on clandestine tradecraft.”

It's Vitamin D. Out here in the grey, dismal PNW, we have an inordinate amount of people afflicted with SAD (explains our high suicide rate) and a huge population of people with below normal levels of Vitamin D.

'wog -- you've got a bit of a problem relying on that as a primary. Let's say that you want some square footage lit to -- oh, say half the brightness of the outdoors. So if you want 1000 sq ft lit to 1/2 sunlight, you need at least 500 sq ft of collector nearby in full sunlight. Which probably wouldn't get approved by the Hobbiton zoning board.

Wait. I thought anything other than muscle pain was your body's way of saying, "Knock that shit off."
He is taking some time off. Knee pain for runners can be something that's not a big deal depending on where it is. Outside of the knee, ITB (which is inflammation of the illio-tibial tendon that runs from the hip to the knee). I occasionally get that, and I just back off for a few days, ice and stretch it. Then there is patellofemoral syndrome, which is more in the front of the knee (tracking issue, usually from overuse) so taking some time off and rest is also appropriate.
Anything chronic or recurrent should be evaluated. Sometimes people are running in the wrong shoes or need orthotics, etc.

That's good! So much of running is mental! Hopefully, when the weather gets better, you will be able to run outside--always so much nicer than running on a dreadmill in a stuffy gym!
It's raining cats and dogs here now. So glad it was dry earlier when I ran! But yes, out here, we run outside all year round because it's so mild, so even though it's rainy, at least w don't have to contend with feet of snow!

I have never been sprayed with jet fuel before. It was simply un fucking believable.
The plane came in at about 500 ft. You could not hear it, UNTIL he hit the afterburners. Mother of god, I would not want to be on the receiving end of that shit.
The fucker split the two goal posts with his wings out and then did a barrel turn pulling them back. I thought he would crash into the building downtown. Gone is a nano second.
Jet fuel covered everyone. So fucking cool. Nothing like the sound of 1,000s of lbs of fuel being blown out the back of a bomber.

Elliptical is good because it's no impact. Whenever I get injured, that, running on the Alter-G (anti-gravity treadmill) and deep pool running are the three things the doctor always says I can do.

It wasn't too bad, Running RN, and the nurses have done an excellent job of packing it etc. so it wasn't bothering me at all when I was doing active things like work and shovelling snow after the big storm last Friday. And the nurses at the walk-in clinic know me from a couple of years of allergy shots I took so they knew I wasn't a PITA and snuck me in pretty quickly. And they knew it would only take them a few minutes to change the dressing and let the doc see it for a quick look to see how it was recovering.

It's interesting, and I believe it, nevertheless, I went in Gander Mtn a few days ago in Morrisville NC (Raleigh area) and they had guns everywhere, and ammo stacked on shelves, and some bulk ammo on skids in the aisle.
I went in for just one thing, and got out before my credit card caught on fire, so I'm sure they likely didn't have any ARs or AR ammo, but LOTS of other stuff.

What is the deal with Bass Pro shops anyway? Are they under the same corporate roof as Cabelas, or did they just shamelessly (and slavishly) copy Cabaelas' store design? They put up a Bass Pro shop in a big rural mall just north of Calgary, and I would swear that it's exterior and interior design is a Xerox copy of the Cabelas in Glendale, AZ, right down to the indoor trout pool and the number of points on the rack of the stuffed muley buck.
And why would you have a Bass Pro shop in Alberta, anyway, given that no body of water in this province supports bass of any sort? Kind of like having a "Moose Pro" shop in Florida.

We used to have this guy working for us that was very much "holier-than-thou" (deacon in his church, even) and every so often someone would get totally pissed off about him.....and I'd say, "remember, he has three very sheltered daughters and lives in a house where he can never leave the toilet seat up."
And if that didn't do it, I'd have them imagine the day, 18 years in the future, when some motorcycle-riding punk would show up at his front door and say, "G'd evenin', Mr. Pierce -- I'm here to pick up Carrie....I even brought an extra helmet for her."

Laptops and tablets are now coming with webcams built-in almost universally. And a fair number of monitors have an integrated webcam and microphone for Skype.
Likewise, a lot of new TVs have cameras built-in for Skype and Kinect like gesture recognition. I was recently trying out a demo of a Samsung model in Best Buy that had a gesture controlled version of Angry Birds on it. This is in the the high end right now but will migrate into cheaper sets soon enough. It will probably be hard to find a TV at retail without a camera and 'smart' features within five years.

I cannot believe that that large a retailer can't get any ammo.
I've been going to a Sport retailer and though they're tight, at least they're getting something.
Strangely enough shot gun ammo isn't as scarce. I say strangely because in a home defensive situation, the shotgun is King. imo.

I hear yah though.
I've talked to employees at other places and have found that much of this is speculative buying. Especially magazines and such.
Guy told me the day after Newtown, some one came in and bought out all the magazines of any kind they had and TOLD them they were going to sell them for 2x on ebay.
Strangely enough some retailers are actually playing pretty fair. I got 525 rnds of .22hp for 19.99 and 100 rnds of 9mm fmj for 23.99 the other day.
They've won my business. I'll THINK UP stuff to buy from them in future.

It's the use of the two words together that is what was protected when Chubby Checker trademarked his name. I'd say he has a case. Of course the $500 million in damages is ludicrous. It wouldn't surprise if there is an out-of-court settlement. I'm not a lawyer, but anybody can see that the authors of the software were trading on Chubby's stage name to get a humorous and memorable name for their lame product.

Remember the "Thing Maker" by Kenner? A plastic molding kit with molds for making soft squishy plastic monsters? It'd be a hoot to make a video purporting to be an ad for the "Dildo Maker" from Kenner
I remember that! It made what was called "Creepy Crawlers" back in my day. I'm old, I know.

Things are rolling along. Pretty busy in the oilpatch. Lots of snow earlier this winter, but if the last few days are any indication, we could be in for an early breakup, which will put a damper on drilling activity until mud season is over. Right now, it's only -2C, which is darn warm for February, this late in the evening.

They are two different things. Clips load magazines, magazines load guns. Even the M1 used a clip to load the magazine. It's not being pedantic or punctilious, it's using the right terms for the right things.
