Overnight Open Thread (16 Nov 2013)
— CDR M

16 American cities foreign governments warn their citizens about. Aren't these all liberal bastions of gun free zones and other liberal kumbayah nonsense? I mean, these aren't exactly hotbeds of Tea Partiers and such right?
h/t Where was the press?

If only there was a profession, a profession that claims to stand up for citizens and against the tyranny of government and politicians. That enjoys Constitutional protection in order to carry out its job. Yes, in order to pass health plan, Obama and Democrats kept mum about its downsides, but where was the press, these so-called defenders of citizens and the truth? They swallowed the party line and acted like democratic operatives is what they did. They have just as much blame to take in this debacle as do the politicians. If they reported back then what they are now, and let's be honest, much of what is being said now WAS available back then, Obamacare might not have passed. They chose not to report it or slander those who spoke out against Obamacare.

Obamacare is the Vasa of our times.

I have been trying to think of a good metaphor for the Obamacare debacle. I think I found it in the Vasa.

Vasa was a Swedish warship launched in 1628 — only to sink after sailing less than a mile. It is so apt!

What's In An Airport Name

So how many of you know who Chicago's O'hare airport is named after? Well, in case you didn't know, it was named after WWII ace LCDR Edward "Butch" O'Hare.

Brewing Beer

I wish brewing beer was as simple as brewing coffee. Even with this Mr. Brew thingy, it takes a week.

The Science Of Farts

Yes. The silent ones ARE deadly.

Attractive Accents

So y'all, what accents turns you on? I dig a good Scottish accent but it seems the southern drawl wins the "sexiest" accent according to dating site survey.

In a questionnaire released by the dating website, 36.5 percent of the 2,000 men and women surveyed said those from the South have by far the most attractive accent in the U.S. and Canada.

And winner of the most unattractive twang?

Mid-Atlantic accents, from states such as Pennsylvania and Delaware, are the country's least favorite, garnering only four percent of votes.

Bacon

The bacon obsession: 18 reasons we drool over this wonder food. Oh man, bacon tacos??? I gots to try that.

New Spy Agency

I give you the M. P. A. A. (spoken with Hans Gruber's voice). Sadly, nearly 99% of what comes out of Hollywood today is utter crap. Maybe if Hollywood would actually make some stuff that was worth the cost of going to the theater, piracy problems would go down. Even the reward for catching someone is pretty low compared to what one can make selling bootleg copies.

Obamacare Escape Plan?

Well hell, if Fauxcahantas pulled this off, we may as well try it too. Escape Obamacare by joining an Indian tribe.

Say, how come all those folks up in arms over the Redskins logo/name have never pitched a fit about Fauxcahantas? Hmmm?

49 My rendition: Boston: Avoid walking at night in Dorchester, Mattapan and Roxbury, and be wary of “petty crime” in Chinatown, the North End and Fenway. But most crimes in the city occur underneath the golden dome on Beacon Hill. New York: Be wary in Times Square and at the Statue of Liberty, and don’t go to Harlem, the Bronx or Central Park at night. Washington: Northeast, Southeast, Northwest and Southwest should be avoided, and Union Station is dangerous at night. “Le quartier Anacostia n’est pas recommandable de jour comme de nuit.” Translation: Don’t go to Anacostia, day or night. Baltimore: “Considered a dangerous city except downtown.” Or as a buddy of mine screamed at me one day, "Don't stop at the Stop signs, idiot!" And extra credit points if you can figure out the common denominator in all of these warnings...

My wife's parents are from Pennsylvania. They ask questions with the tone everyone else uses for statements. They drop "to be" completely. example: "the dogs need fed" They use let instead of left. "I accidentally let the milk out overnight and it went bad". They say "awhile" instead of "for awhile". "Go outside awhile." They say bath instead of bathe. "Don't forget to bath the dogs". There's no such thing as vacuuming. They just call everything "sweeping" whether you're using a broom, vacuum, double sided dildo, etc.

Maybe all of this wouldn't bother me if they weren't white bread fucking diehard democrats.

80 Yeah, west PA has quite a different accent than east PA, i.e. Delaware Valley accent. That said, there's no *one* Southern accent, but regional variations, and within those, generational variations. For example, there's a regular GA accent, and also a distinctive south GA accent (especially with women) but a disappearing "aristocratic" accent (think Jimmy Carter) I only notice with elderly men. Probably won't be around much longer.

81 "I wish brewing beer was as simple as brewing coffee. Even with this Mr. Brew thingy, it takes a week." I've never made beer, but my dad used to make wine, he had a press to press his own fruit, kegs, the whole 9 yards. Wine needs time to "work", the yeast and sugar, and whatnot.. I assume beer needs the same thing. It doesn't happen instantly. Wine-making is a great hobby by the way. When he sold his press and kegs he had plenty of people interested in buying them.

100 DC? Avoid anything east and south of the Anacostia River. Go the National Arboretum with a car. If you're a tourist sans car, here's the following advice: On Capitol Hill, your barrier is 13th Street NE/SE from H Street NE to the Navy Yard/Ballpark in SE. The Marines are on 8th and I SE. Don't go north of H Street NE. There are some good areas, but if you don't have a car or the DC knowledge, just avoid it. NW DC is good from Rock Creek Park westward. The Mall is great. SW DC doesn't have a whole lot, but it's generally OK. DC gets its quadrants from the Capitol. There's a spot in the building where East, North, and South Capitol Streets and the Mall all meet.

Alan Markovitz recently moved into the home where the statue was erected, which happens to be next to the home where his ex-wife now lives with her new lover, whom she reportedly had an affair with while being married to Markovitz.

VBJonny: I wonder if those PA expressions don't go back to the Pennslyvania Dutch. In Milwaukee when I was growing up I heard old people say "I'm going down by Mitchell St. shopping." It's a word for word translation from German. You rarely hear it now because Milwaukee is pretty removed at this point from it's German immigrant roots. I recall the same was true of some phrase in Louisiana - I believe it's "carry groceries" which is translated from French.

In fact, I have read that many "Irishisms' are basically word for word translations from Gaelic to English. When people have to, or are forced to, learn a second language and they never become completely fluent in the new language, they tend to think of how they would say something in their native tongue and then they think of the English words and use the syntax of their native language. And of course, what's proper grammar in their language becomes an odd regional or ethic expression in English.

151 From the Vasa link at NRO: Vasa was built top-heavy and had insufficient ballast. Despite an obvious lack of stability in port, she was allowed to set sail and foundered only a few minutes after she first encountered a wind stronger than a breeze. The impulsive move to set sail was the result of a combination of factors: Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus, who was leading the army on the continent on the date of her maiden voyage, was impatient to see her join the Baltic fleet in the Thirty YearsÂ’ War; at the same time, the kingÂ’s subordinates lacked the political courage to discuss the shipÂ’s structural problems frankly or to have the maiden voyage postponed. An inquiry was organized by the Swedish privy council to find personal responsibility for the disaster, but in the end no one was punished for the fiasco. That is indeed perfect.

174 I think most of the funny speak in PA is a result of speaking English with german grammar. It explains dropping "to be" and "awhile" instead of "for awhile". It also explains using bath for bathe as they are both the same word in German. They also say itch instead of scratch and use "all" to mean finished or gone. "The pizza is all" means there is no more pizza. Also directly from German "die pizza ist alle" But dropping "to be" drives me up a wall. It's one of the few PA podunk speak sayings my wife inherited. "His diaper needs changed." No, his diaper needs CHANGING or TO BE changed. I don't know what annoys me more, that or my individual insurance policy being canceled.

Add East LA, City Terrace, Highland Park, Lincoln Heights, Boyle Heights, East Hollywood, Pacoima, Reseda, Van Nuys and North Hollywood north of Victory Blvd, Huntington Park, Wilmington, Crenshaw, 2 miles from Downtown in any direction .. Santa Monica though isn't bad, just avoid the homeless and the drifters who shit en mass near the pier. Bergamot Station is beautiful. Miracle Mile is nice too, particularly around Levitated Mass. That was a great blog -- especially during the 2004 election -- until the dude underwent a bizarre political transformation from fairly conservative to rather liberal in the span of one year. Really odd, that.

Yes, I know it's Caturday, but - we had a springer spaniel when I was growing up who taught herself to ring the front doorbell when she wanted in. It was great - we had a bay window in the living room and she'd jump up to see if anybody was there. You'd see her head pop up outside the window and then she'd run to the door and hit the doorbell with her paw.

Pepper was a very smart dog. My ex-brother-in-law's family owned her sister, Misty and would bring Misty for visits. They would both get so excited at seeing each other, they'd pee on the driveway. Then they'd run around the house together a zillion times. Once when they were running side by side, I saw Pepper holding Misty's ear in her mouth. To this day, it makes me laugh. It was like two little kids running and holding hands.

When the breeder of a Border Collie we had custody of for a while was describing the leaping ability of the pup's parents, she said one of the sire's trick when he wanted someone to play with him was to leap the six foot fence in the back yard, run around to the front door and ring the bell. He took it as a given that anyone who answered the door was obligated to come out and play.

May, was with us for a while to be socialized and my sister was hoping this would be permanent. But instead she got put in a succession of homes who didn't understand what it meant to have a Border Collie around. While we had her she was at the age when she'd piddle if something startled her. One day she decided she wanted some attention from my mother who was reading the paper at the dining room table. May leaped onto the table in front of her and Mom gave a startled scream.  This in turn startled May and they both peed. Fortunately, one was sitting on a stack of newspaper and the other was wearing a pad. I'll leave the distribution of those statuses as an exercise for the reader.

It's going to be VERY expensive whether you buy or rent

Decent neighborhoods are Los Feliz (very pricey), Silverlake (hipsters) Atwater Village (north of Glendale Blvd), Burbank, Encino, Sherman Oaks, Grenada Hills, Tarzana, Woodland Hills, Canoga Park, La Canada, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa, Torrence near the beach areas.. but really you should look north or west of the city limits in Ventura County

Unless you HAVE to, why are you moving into a town that sane people are getting out of?

Then I decided to branch out and try some other drinks, so far mostly Manhattans and White Russians. And I've been buying top shelf hooch like Bulleit Rye and Russian Standard vodka. Weird trivia: Back in the 30 though the 50s, Val Verde was home to the black version of Palm Springs. It was a sort of country club where middle-class blacks in Los Angeles went to do country club sort of stuff that they couldn't do at the places that wouldn't let any non-WASP in..

We were looking at places there a few years ago when the place we were renting was being foreclosed because the owner had died and his girlfriend had been pocketing the rent instead of paying the mortgage. Up until then I didn't even realize that tiny community even had a name. I looked around there one day and noticed far too many satellite dishes for my liking, because this meant there wasn't any cable service and I already knew that DSL speeds would be at best minimal. Since a lot of what I do depends on having decent broadband, I mad it clear to my mother and sister that this would be a big problem for me.

To me, Maine accents sound like Boston ones, only with 40% more obnoxiousness.

Interesting - the New England accent is descended from the one common in East Anglia, England, which is the Puritans' home base. The PA-Delaware accent comes from the Quakers, who came from the English Midlands, and the Southern accent comes from the South and West of England, which is where the cavaliers and their indentured servants came from.

David Hackett-Fischer, a historian who has written a lot about colonial America, has said 17th century Englishmen from Somerset and Cornwall sounded more like modern Southerners than they sounded like their own countrymen to the north and west.

Hackett-Fischer also said the southern Englishmen who moved to Virginia loved frying foods, while the Puritans went in for baking and making pies and the Midlands Quakers went for boiling. (Only the southerners really appreciated food - the Quakers and Puritans thought enjoying food too much was sinful.) Hence- southern fried chicken, Boston baked beans and scrapple.

Sorry - I am fascinated by regional differences and their histories so I do go on more than I should in the ONT.

350 From the Accent Quiz Which American accent do you have?

Northeastern

This could either mean an r-less NYC or Providence accent or one from Jersey which doesn't sound the same. Just because you got this result doesn't mean you don't pronounce R's.(People in Jersey don`t call their state "Joisey" in real life)

holygoat, since your wife is going to be doing voiceovers I assume she'll be going mainly to the looping stages at one of the studios, probably mostly at Universal or Warner Bros

In that case, Toluca Lake is a decent area or Burbank as long as it's not near San Fernando Blvd. Lots of people who work in the business there behind the scenes. Studio City isn't too bad but it's not too good either. Sherman Oaks or Valley Village is OK.  Going to be expensive though.

Yep, our branch of the First Entertainment Federal Credit Union has had to move to a larger space twice in five years. The place now looks like an actual bank.

The credit union started on the Warner lot in Burbank. They've also got a branch in the main building on the Sony (formerly MGM and formerly Columbia) lot in Culver City. When I first switched to using the credit union, after my Cal Fed account was looted and they were amazingly clueless in helping me deal with it, they were in a trailer in the employee parking area of Magic Mountain, a holdover from when it was a Warner property.

She has friends in the voice acting business who have told her that she is good enough to do it professionally, which means... LA."

Plenty of people have "followed their dream" straight into a nightmare.

Go pull up the old news helicopter video of poor schlub Reginald Denny, caught up in the early Nineties riots, getting pulled out of the cab of his truck by a screaming mob and having his face and skull smashed with a brick.

Next time that things kick off in L.A. on a large scale, it's going to be even worse. There are going to be tens of thousands more innocent Denny types getting beaten, robbed, raped, knifed and shot simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Stuff with life changing consequences even if you escape with your life. Are you ready to be one of those ugly statistics? How about your wife or her mom? Are they up for taking that ride?

Quick background:  I provided Brandon Webb, Glen Doherty with tech info for Navy Seal Sniper.  (here:  http://tinyurl.com/momshsn)

It's been getting expensive lately, but you can still get a sardine can of 440 rounds for around a hundred bucks or so, and the Mosin Nagant 91/30 is still one of the cheapest guns on the market. They made about a bazillion of them and then warehoused them when they stopped using them.

521 Just watched "The Man from Nowhere" on Hulu. It's a Korean action-adventure and it's a really awesome movie. It's got lots of gory bits and righteous justice and tears. Also... the cops trick the US into getting them intel by sending an email to the Whitehouse... and it's so bad I can't even TELL you what it was they sent. (Imagine the one thing I really can't even type out here or anywhere else... it was that.) I always think it's interesting how foreign action films tuck in these incidental bits on how the US is viewed. In this case, not bad, but as this somewhat chancy power to be cautious of, but that can be counted on to jump a particular direction.

528 510 GGE Rim lock. Easy to prevent if you load it right. Yes. And "loading it right" has to be done every time. 7.62x54 is one of the two rounds that defeated the Nazis on the Eastern Front in WW2, so it is clearly a good round, but signing up for its issues ... I'd consider carefully. There is quite a lot to be said for 2-5 sardine cans of 7.62x54 ammo with a properly cleaned-up and broken-in Mosin, stashed away, "just in case". The weapon is good, but it's a loner, and an orphan: what other commonly-available weapon shares ammo?, Where does the ammo come from?

553 In all seriousness, having taught physics for 17 years, we need a complete rewrite.

This textbook uses nu as frequency that textbook uses the english "f" as frequency.  The deviations in variables and terminology and etimoligy are atrocious.

We all deal with it because we've been taught to deal with it but it's just freaking nonsense.  Teaching the variations is a distraction from time better spent teaching principles and techniques.

The world of science, I've learned, is just like cowboying:  shit is just duct taped and held together with baling twine.

Recruits in the Misguided Children are also 20+ years younger than I am, with the resultant younger eyes. The entirety of my small arms training in basic was one magazine through a 22 conversion M16, pointing generally target-wise, and the "instructors" were impressed if we hit paper at all with those clapped out POS's. 609

Hmm, just spent the afternoon at the range with some newbies and semi-newbies letting them shoot the toys.  Unfortunately we started a bit late and there wasn't time for the Garand and the Mosin.

DAve, my interest is mostly historical - and in being the cheapest bastard in the Milky Way - so Mosins are great.  Also, my Soviet and Russian history and interest make Mosins a natural.  Still piling the surplus ammo high, though I can see how some milder handloads would make it even more fun.

O'Hare airport (ORD) - so I'm returning from a war zone in 2006, and have a stopover at ORD.  I had read not long before that in honor of O'Hare (and probably also because Lake Michigan is where they find most of the things), there was a restored (static) Wildcat on display in a terminal.  So I ask at the "Information" desk in the terminal I'm waiting in, and the lady says "oh yeah, take the shuttle over to Terminal 2, it's there".  So I do.  I stop by the "Information" desk just inside Terminal 2 where the shuttle dropped us.  Gentleman there says he's never heard of it.  I turn around, shaking my head, to walk back whence I came in the underground tunnel.

Not 100 yards from the "Information" desk that didn't have the information, I turn a corner, and - there it is!  I recall there was a slight error in the historical info regarding, I think, a US aircraft carrier.  Anyway, nice display.

That is all, calling it a night.  Hard work shootin' and enjoying the afternoon.

The full-trick M4 clones can be saved for the Iraq vet infantry guys who know what the fuck they're doing.

Actually since I live ten miles from one of the Army's larger bases, this whole area will be awash in stuff that goes bang provided we don't use all of it on each other in the first ninety days of a collapse, but we'll see.

629 I had to laugh at that MPAA story when they talked about surveillance to prevent camcorders. Back in, oh, 1982 or so, my friend and I smuggled in his Reggievision setup--a huge camera and a separate recorder--into the Tiffany theater here in LA. We set the recorder up on a tripod to get a copy of the film Head--not for dishonest reasons, but because the film was completely unavailable and very rarely played in theaters.

The gag went perfectly. That is, until about 30 seconds into the film, when one of us inadvertently jostled the camera so that it only caught the right half of the frame.

645 Re: beer/wine/mead brewing

unless you go through 5-10 gallons in a week, the only time you have to wait is for your very first batch. after that you start the cycle right after the first.

if you aren't interested in specific styles, get yourself an aquarium air stone and pump along with some dap for your yeast and you'll have bone dry ferment in the second 24 hours (first is used by the colony to fill the must/wort).

The greenness of the beer or wine is tied primarily to volume of suspended yeast. If you don't care about specific flavor profiles and aren't distilling, run it through a series of filters. That will remove yeast along with color and flavor.

If alcohol is all that you are seeking, then do the above and you'll have as much as the size of your bucket(s) in 2-3 days (5-10 gallons per bucket). While the feds do not allow more than 23% abv I will say if you sugar (cane, honey, grape, malt, whatever) no more than + 0.08, resugar at 0.03, and repeat while minding the O2 and DAP (only during colony growth and ferment) you'll hit max legal in 2-3 days.

I do not filter and so my wine/mead/barleywine is drinkable in 2 months after end of ferment and is mighty fine in 8. I suspect even more so in 1-2 years but I've not been able to hold off for that long.

TLDR --

Beer yeast, when fermented per manufacturer's instructions, contributes to taste and shouldn't be filtered. Wine yeast will effect color/scent/taste (stripping) depending on how aggressive it is and how much stress it was under. Filtering wine is fine as long as you are careful not to strip too much.

Nutrients and O2 (only during active ferment) removes all but temperature stress but speed of ferment can contribute to stripping.

Too much heat can add some odd flavors that will take much time to age out. Read what the manufacturer indicates for heat tolerance and disregard the abv tolerance if you'll be fermenting by means other than their instructions. Also, remember the colony itself will produce heat, more so the faster it runs.

Wrapping the bucket/carboy in a unwanted cotton shirt and placing both in in a small tub with 1-2 inches of water will help with cooling unless very humid. If humidity is significant, use a dehumidifier but mind that combination will speed cooling.

A cool ferment isn't bad and some prefer it, but it will slow things and if the colony is weak an infection may set in.
