Man, you could cross out Egypt and put in a whole range of words and this picture would still work.

Biologic Immortality
Fascinating stuff. Girl who never ages could hold key to 'biologic immortality'. So if they find the gene responsible for developmental inertia, at what age would you choose to stop aging? 18? 21? 25?

Military Epidemics That Aren't
Finally someone digs beyond the top layer when looking at suicide and sexual assault rates in the military. Military epidemics that aren't.
war demands unflinching discipline, courage and loyalty in the presence of our deepest animal passions, and in that sense it is anything but dehumanizing. By regarding soldiers, sometimes condescendingly, as victims and patients, we are in danger of foisting our own, very civilian and very modern, therapeutic pathologies on people who don't need them and whose ability to do their jobs—that is, keep us safe—is likely to be diminished.
Greatest Movie Lines Of All Time
Air Force Callsigns
It's a little different in the Navy, but essentially the same. How do fighter pilots typically earn their callsigns?
When all is said an done, the naming committee will render its verdict. Call signs generally follow a few rules as many have noted:It cannot be "too cool" like "Dagger" or "Iceman"
It cannot be "too good" for the subject in question (based solely on the judgment of your drunken friends)
It cannot be something you asked for. You don't ask for a specific call sign. Your squadron mates give it to you. Serious rookie mistake.
It must pass the bar test. You should be able to explain your call sign at the Nellis bar and not have potential dates, random civilians, or other fighter pilots run away in embarrassment for you
For first-time namees, your call sign usually revolves around something stupid (or fantastic) you did during your initial few months in the squadron, or a play off your name
If you flew with a call sign in combat, you will generally be given preference for keeping your previous call sign. So long as a) you didn't do something horrendously stupid lately, b) you bribed adequately, and c) you are not in Korea, where many rules of physics are routinely broken
If you succeed in pissing off most of your fellow pilots, you may be selected for hostile renaming. All bets are off. Your best hope is excessive groveling at the feet of the committee, followed by promises of a large/expensive bribe, and a change in behavior. Then, adopt a stoic silence and await your fate.

Rehydrating Beer
Move over Gatorade, there's a new post-sport drink out there. Aussie's come up with rehydrating beer.
By adding electrolytes, an ingredient commonly found in sports drinks, and reducing the alcohol content researchers found that beer could become even more refreshing. And the best news for beer drinkers is that the taste of the modified brews didn't change.
Female Urine Device

Way back in college at a frat party, I saw a sorority chick use a standing urinal as the line for the ladies head was a bit long. I don't believe she had portable funnel device though. I could see this being useful for some places as bathrooms can be pretty nasty or in Sicily where there never seems to be any toilet seats at a lot of public restrooms.
End of Times Medical Supply
This is a very, very big list of medical stuff to have on hand for when the shit hits the fan. A good thing to think about and to start stocking up on. A Pharmacologic Strategy. This stuff is just as important as guns, ammo and food.
The Better Workout
Gym workouts and sunbathing do more for your brain than crosswords and Mozart.
Russian Water Park
Nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to Russia.
Adventures in Teaching
WTF? Teacher accused of being drunk on field trip paid $18K. Seems to be a slam dunk case so I don't understand why the settlement. The article is a little light on the details but I would assume it would be easy to prove why the teacher was sent to the ER as it would be in the medical report. Seems like it would be a strong case and not one where you would settle.
Are You Smarter Than A Toddler
Oh I know you morons are but I'm sure some LIVs would get smoked by this 18 month old toddler that knows the capitals of 61 countries.

Human nature is brutal and nasty. Civilization is a thin veneer that we struggle to maintain. The problem is that in war that veneer goes away very quickly.

Agreed. But it wasn't just deadpan, it was silly deadpan. Leslie Nielsen had a deadpan in Airplane, but it was a deadpan with gravitas. Seagal, in those early movies, said everything as though he was discussing what he had for lunch.

Wtf? That biological aging article was 90% bullshit.
Thrawn nailed.tbe greater part, the idea that one gene is responsible is unlikely. Especially when you consider mitochondrial damage as a significant problem for aging.
plus research is pointing to beta amaloid having a huge role in Alzheimer's. Heck, considering the mental problems this poor girl has, its unlikely this gene has any role in protecting neural development, if anything it harms it. Journalists are shitty science writers. Well shitty everything but especially bad science writers.

The Freshette was designed by a guy in my department at Rockwell. Literally, designed by a rocket scientist ;->
He had his wife packing and shipping them in his living room of his apartment in Downey.
Interesting guy...he had a big freaking Cincinnati milacron milling machine in his bedroom and the floor was covered in plastic to catch the chips. His truck didn't have a speedometer, it had a pitot tube on the roof and an airspeed indicator.

Energy drinks I stay away from, along with caffeine. I keep that stuff in reserve for when I really need it. I was never a coffee drinker and it's remarkable how much of a boost you can get from a can of Mountain Dew if you haven't had any significant amount of caffeine in a few months.
There isn't any cheap test available but I suspect I'm one of those unfortunates who gets more of a BP reaction to sodium than most. Whatever the genetic formation is for that sensitivity seems to run down both sides of my family.

The average Russkie doesn't seem to have much of a plan when he drives. Other than avoiding getting killed by oncoming cars in the wrong lane or getting hit with 2 tons of cabbages falling off the truck in front of him.
I'm developing a theory about the Russians. In the old days, they were in daily danger of being sent to the gulags or shot. Now that their government is (nominally) better, they are bored and so create ways of putting their own lives in danger, without relying on the secret police to do it.

Then on day they decided that policy was at an end and we were cut off. Shortly thereafter, I felt really lousy all of the time. I found myself wondering if I was having a freakish renewed bout of mono, which I'd gone through a few years earlier. But it was supposed to be a one-shot thing.
After a while I realized the problem was that I was no longer drinking about a gallon of Coke daily and had largely gone cold turkey on the caffeine. I've tried to keep my consumption more limited since then.

It isn't nearly that bad for me. But I can produce a noticeable spike in my BP if I overindulge. Fortunately, I was never much of a food salter. At some point when I was a kid we stopped keeping stuff like salt and pepper at the table, and I never really missed it. It was probably a combination of my father's medical problems and my mother life long difficulty with spicy food. It's some freak thing because everybody else in the family loves stuff she cannot ever put in her mouth. It doesn't seem to be an allergy in the normal sense. It's more like her taste buds generate sensations at eleventy! from foods that would rate a 2 or 3 for most people.

The no-sugar Rockstar's hit me like a 2x4, and if I shotgun 3 in a row cause scary heart palpitations.
The cheap Rip-It's sold at Dollar Tree aren't quite as effective as the Monsters or Rockstar, but do kick a bit more than stock diet Dew.
I've been making iced coffees this summer too.

Do you mean medications? Or caffeine sources?
My greatest protection against addictions has been being a cheapskate. For example, I smoked pot a fair number of times in my teens but was never inclined to buy any. So it was only when somebody else was sharing. I never found any form of alcohol I really enjoyed. And stuff like cocaine was really expensive when I was at the age when I might have developed a habit.
Unfortunately, one can still manage to pile up debt from getting stuff really cheap. My typical video game purchase is at a fraction of the original MSRP but a few hundred $10 games is still a lot of money. So I do have an addiction of sorts.

Likely both. It's been found that caffeine and nicotine have interesting interactions that increase their effects. Which is why it's so common to people being attached to having both at the same sitting. At some level they know about the combo high. And the combo low from withdrawal can be worse than getting off one or the other separately.

I took a picture and texted my wife "I've fallen through a time rift and find myself in 1987" Her response was brilliant:

Amlodipine
Benazepril
and Bystolic
That last one is a big incentive to get my BP under control because it is horribly expensive. My last round of refills cost nearly $100 and about 85% of that was the Bystolic. But it's supposedly an improvement over what it replaced.
All three of them carry a warning about causing drowsiness. Another big reason to end the need for them. It's bad enough getting to middle-age, I don't need three additional reasons to feel unpredictably sleepy.

There isn't a decent set of tools yet to operate on an individual basis. Heck, it wasn't that long ago, as history measures things, that the Human Genome Project was expected to take fifteen to twenty years. Instead, privately funded outsider zoomed ahead with better technology.
The age of personal genome assays is coming but feels infinitely far away until it arrives. I like to use the CSI absurdity level as a measure. When that show first started, the speed with which DNA results were obtained were orders of magnitude removed from reality, even if you had the most well funded police department in the world. Today, assuming your agency can afford the latest gear, the absurdity of the show's speed of obtaining results has been reduced by over half and the required budget much smaller as well.
How long until a genomic assay is a requirement for an insurance policy? Perhaps in our lifetimes.

Heh -- that's one of my most common rants with Kratos* -- so they're all proud of themselves for discovering that mitochondria have separate DNA that's exclusively maternal, and that human biochemistry can regulate DNA expression in gut bacteria, and that gut bacteria express certain proteins to regulate human DNA expression -- and, yet, they're still claiming that 98% of the human genome is junk DNA [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junk_DNA#Junk_DNA ].
Hello??? That's like saying that 98% of the messages at yahoo.com are "junk messages" because they're of no benefit to Yahoo.

Not a false lead. Just well short of covering all of the possible inputs. That doesn't it stop it from being a major step in individualized medicine.

Regarding strip clubs: I've run into a couple over the years that apparently started out as honest to goodness restaurants until the owners realized that they could make more money with titties than with steak. However, when they changed over they decided to keep the kitchen staff, so you still can get a decent steak.

Oh? In 1972, Susumu Ohno traipses out a model that, if run to extremes, says that the number of important genes can't be more than about 30,000 before mutations outpace benefits. Others find 20,000 encoding genes in 2% of the human genome, and 98% DNA that's noncoding....and, yet, in September 2012, ENCODE declaims that 80% of human DNA probably does something important. Watson and Crick gave us an immense gift....and we're still not getting the basic parameters of what the hell that gift means.

Of course when you have a lot of old ordinance some of it doesn't go off, so they send EOD to take it out. This particular bomb was a 500 pounder, they usually just blow them in place. They packed the C-4 or whatever they use around it, backed off the proscribed distance and set it off...and when it went up it detonated the 2000 pounder off that was underneath it as well.
That was a big boom.

Without context an acronym tends to be meaningless. I once did some contract work in a place where RAM was a frequently used reference to a rather large machine. This lead to a lot of baffling conversations when I tried to explain that they needed a lot more RAM. I was speaking of little boards to go in the computers and they kept asking how they could possibly fit more RAM in the building.

He went through jet school in 2006, then assigned to the F-18F. I know 2 things about the jet. (1) The electronic controls make the pilot a part of the "voting group" in flying the plane. (2) The people who care for the planes are the salt of the earth.
When we visited for winging, NavySon introduced us to the men who packed his chutes and took care of the planes and made sure we understood how important they are. While he was in the RAG, he pulled G's over the limit and was required to stay with the jet and the men who checked it out. When he returned from his first deployment he played the DVD for us and stopped it often to point out to us the squadron personnel, their jobs, why their jobs were important, and what made their jobs hard. Because of that, we have a lot of respect for everyone who made his job possible.
Which is my way of saying thank you.

Not a false lead. Just well short of covering all of the possible inputs. That doesn't it stop it from being a major step in individualized medicine.
Such is science. Just figuring out how much there is to know is step one and the answer keeps changing as more complexity is exposed.

I think where I completely lost it regarding American medicine is with diabetes/the obesity epidemic/insulin resistance/glucose intolerance. The general irritation grew with family history, personal situation, and the damnable food pyramid -- which rivals "The Chemist's War" [ http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/medical_examiner/2010/02/the_chemists_war.html ] as being the most grotesque abuse of citizens by our adulterating would-be-totalitarian out-of-control government. The crack in the wall involved two things -- my cousin (who, while managing to somehow pull it off way better than this sounds, still looks a lot like me in drag) had bariatric surgery a number of years back, and is like the poster-child for it -- having experienced marvelous results. (Her husband, BTW, not so much). So, I'm keeping my eye on bariatric surgery.....and then comes word that it cures type II diabetes.
W. T. F. ???
Seriously, bing "diabetes" and "duodenum". The first article I read went into bariatric surgery, duodenal sleeves in mice, etc. and led to a startling question -- is type II diabetes a disorder of the duodenum? Really? Those organ-thingies in there, how do they work?!?
It's not just establishing a framework and drilling down to details, it's about establishing a framework with insufficient data and reinforcing it by political means to force the accomplishment of establishment goals.
I'd suspect that microbiomes are at least 10x more important to individual health than genomes.....which, itself, is going to be hard to measure because both halves play with each other. But all the grant money flowing into personal genomics ain't helpin' -- nor is the suggestion about "insurance policies requiring genomes."

Remember when there was no link between bacterial infections and stomach ulcers?
Then someone noticed that some folks, at a percentage greater than random chance, had their ulcer symptoms disappear when taking antibiotics. That was mainly because the bacteria causing the ulcers had all died, but that wasn't possible because bacteria didn't cause ulcers.
One of my co-workers had a stomach ulcer earlier this year. It was fixed with antibiotics as that's the recommended treatment now.

That was far more sciency than the current diaperload of anti-sciency science on "obesity/diabetes/etc." -- although....we all owe a huge debt of gratitude to Australian "bare-knuckled scientist" and physician Barry [not Bruce?] Marshall who swilled a beaker of H. pylori and subsequently developed gastritis as planned. Just how badass is that? This is a major problem, treating symptoms without understanding the disease.
There are at least five syndromes that cause what is diagnosed as type II diabetes. Most of the time no one checks, they just treat the symptom. Some of the syndromes are just symptoms.
It's a mess, as I said I don't blame people for not having all the answers, just for not knowing the questions.

Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million per year, in the context of about 300,000 violent crimes involving firearms in 2008

And my point would have been just as valid. She shouldn't have relied on the state, she should have relied on Smith and Wesson.
"Waters Mathis had done everything to try to protect herself from her estranged husband, Dennis J. Mathis. She moved from her Independence house to her motherÂ’s Florence home. She kept in close touch with her parents and brothers. She notified co-workers of her estranged husbandÂ’s threatening behavior. She sought a divorce and a protection order from court."
Notice anything conspicuously absent from that? How 'bout "she got a gun and learned how to use it"? Once that is pointed out, how ridiculous and pitiful does "....had done everything to try to protect herself from her estranged husband...." look? She hadn't even scratched the surface. In a perfect world, her husband would have shown up to yell at her before killing her, her hand would have fallen on the gun in her purse, she could have taken it off safety, and shot him multiple times center-mass when he brandished his new .38.
Y'know, looking at that......this story makes me angry, very angry. But it's not angry at Adriane or even at the poor woman who the story is about. It's angry at the total bullshit that being a hopeless victim is some sort of desired state. I don't want to get cast into a "blame the victim" or "harsh on fellow Moron" mindset -- I'm not talking about either. But whoever taught the victim that "she did all she could" was the list given was a schmuck.

Eh.
Dad got out of Surgery and one of the HHC people freaked out about my 77yr. old Dad's high blood pressure one day and got his GP's practice to issue medication for it (his regular GP was on vaycay for a month).
Went in to see the GP 2 weeks later (substitute teacher?)and he was ADAMANT that my Dad not take the BP drugs on a daily basis unless he had actual SYMPTOMS based on the charts from the chick doctor who he was subbing for.
"Have it on hand, just in case", he said but I don't think you need this!
I know WHY the HHC Aid was concerned but her focus was more on monitoring the (potentially VERY SERIOUS) effects of the levels of temporary Warfarin and Vicodyn type meds immediately after major surgery than the whole picture.
As was appropriate. That was her job.
Just saying, sometimes it can be a good thing to go to the doctors' offices of your parents or sit in on their PT just so you have a better picture of their health needs. Especially when they are feeling not "themselves" sometimes.
He trusts his Doctors (at his age it is ALWAYS plural) and so do I.
But it is good to get an idea of WHAT your Parent is taking and for WHY.
Maybe your Parent really NEEDS to take 17 different prescrition pills for her 9 different conditions. OK. Good to know.
What if your Parent is really being accidentally over-prescribed, or even worse counter-medicated by an array of 4 different Docs & doesn't (or can't) keep close enough tabs on WHO prescribed WHAT and WHEN and FOR WHAT.
The last one is the kicker! FOR WHAT doesn't mean "Prevents Acid Reflux" what is it DOING?

My gramps spent DECADES of his life on a path from BP meds -> insulin spikes -> cholesterol wrecks -> glaucoma spikes -> cardiac arrhythmia -> BP spikes -> joint pain -- and 'round and 'round again. At any given time he had five serious things wrong with him, with four being caused by medication from something else. I'm wary about being set on that path.

The commercials alone would scare me away from aot of these newer meds. Anytime I hear side effects on a TV ad like 'suicidal thoughts', 'some incidents of death' , makes me wonder if the people making/selling these things are even human.

When I was in school and immediately after (and hardly svelte), my BP was 95/60 -- which hardly qualifies as "blood pressure" and is more like "blood seep". I had my wisdom teeth out in the mid-'80s and that was a serious concern at the time.
A lot of the BP issue is that it isn't a static number. It's supposed to go up to support exertion and down again when you relax......so it's likely to read high as you're stressed, even if it could be lower if you weren't. As such, it becomes a proxy for how stressed you are -- which has a number of unpleasant effects that aren't based on cardiac function.

BP also leads back to the earlier discussion of genetics. Some people just keep better BP than others despite similar stress levels and diet.
I'm fortunate there. Rotating shifts, semi-stressful job, very stressful in-laws, way too much coffee - yet still excellent BP. All of my family is the same.

One year of self defense courses should be mandatory for all public high school students. Learn to handle a rifle and pistol, learn some basics of unarmed defense, learn situational awareness, protecting your information, and first aid.

All excellent ideas, I recall first aid being a requirement in GA may years ago. Not sure if it is now. That was probably my favorite course in 8th grade. Very useful over the years. Although I never had to worry about unarmed defense cause I'm a great big MOFO that nobody messes with, that would definitley be a good course in todays crazy world.

A lot of people get upset at the unarmed defense idea. I'm not talking about being Bruce Lee, but most people, especially women, should know how to defend themselves when someone throws a punch, or grabs/chokes them, and get free in order to either escape or get to a weapon.

Probably best if you head south of the border to buy most of that list. Or do it online.

Lone Watie: I notice when you get to DISlikin' someone they ain't around for long neither.
Granny Hawkins: They say you're a hard put and desperate man, Josey Wales. They're goin' to heel and hide you to a barn door. You know what I say?
Josey Wales: What's that?
Granny Hawkins: I say that big talk's worth doodly-squat.

In fact, I think that is one of the enduring features of oaters that keeps them variably popular, including overseas. A lack of law, except that which is enforced by individual men. And it's a righteous law. Not petty nor arbitrary.
Quite unlike what we have now.

Here's a link to the Medical Study on military suicides. Apparently their linked with mental disorders, alcohol issues, and gay male sex. I don't think that the soldiers will get trained on any of those issues....

You do no harm to me or mine and I'll do no harm to you or yours.
We'll be neighborly, help each other in hard times and live in peace.

One of the great scenes in Pat Garrett and Bllly the Kid (arguably the first modern unglamorized Western) involved Pat Garrett and a family on a raft floating down the river. They shot at each other, then stared each other down out of respect. It had nothing to do with the the plot, but it told so much of a story.
Note I said unglamorized, not unromanticized. I suspect Billy was a nasty little psycopath, nothing at all like Sam Peckinpah's direction of Kris Kristofferson, who was a lot more sympathetic figure.
Aside -- I say modern unglamorized Western -- some of the really old ones (silents, early talkies) were very realistic because people didn't know anything different and many of the events were in recent memory. I still think of the scene in John Wayne's first starring role, The Big Trail (1930) that involved building a winch to get the wagons down a steep hill safely. It would never even occur to anybody today that was something to do, let alone that it would be a dramatic point of the movie. And movies where it was normal to have chicken coops in the yard.
