Overnight Open Thread (18 Oct 2013)
— CDR M

This week reminded of that awful movie Aliens VS Predators where the tagline for the movie was "no matter who wins, we lose". So you democrats enjoy your victory. If you want to call it that.

So what are we left with? A burgeoning debt, and no effort on the horizon to get it under control. Obama’s “victory” couldn’t be much more hollow, as his policies continue to drive us toward financial catastrophe.

What happens when cities fall apart?

Hmmmm. Interesting read. What happens when cities fall apart: The coming age of the urban guerrilla.

Crime is Warfare on Another Scale. There has been "a blurring of the distinction between crime and warfare" in urban environments, he pointed out. Armed gangs and paramilitary terrorist groups are blurring together. Look no further than cartel violence in northern Mexico and you can see that a sufficiently organized criminal is no different than a warlord.

We might say that a large enough crime spree is indistinguishable from an insurgency—a revolution against order in the city.

Sense of Scale

This ended up being harder than I thought it would be. Macro or micro? Test your sense of scale with images either from space or from a microscope.

Bacon and Cooking

I could be convinced to try the Bacon Beer Milkshake. But first I'd have to get to the Texas Motor Speedway.

The milkshake includes six ounces of Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream, two ounces of bacon syrup, two ounces of candied bacon, and half a bottle of Rahr & Sons Ugly Pug Black Lager.

Chef Pena tops it off with whipped cream topping and yes, a handful of bacon bits, making it sixteen ounces of pure decadence and meat sweats.

Now, we haven't had any cooking videos in awhile, so here's one with Halloween in mind.

Ninja Tracks

I stumbled upon this the other day and it is pretty good. There is a group called Ninja Tracks that focuses on providing music for movie trailers. It is a pretty good sound. Trailermusicnews.com describes their sound as "fusing electronic and synthetic elements with punishing industrial rock and cinematic orchestration to create an explosive, high impact soundscape designed to accentuate any campaign".

Other good tracks are Destroyer Of Worlds, 5 By 5, Blackened Sky, Fallen Angels and Everything Burns. Heck, they're all pretty damn good. Now if they only would sell their albums.

Did You Know.....

That Mountain Dew was invented as Whiskey Mix?

SMOD

OK, I have some better news after last Friday's update about SMOD not showing up for another 100 years or so. Newly discovered asteroid could hit Earth in 2032. That's about the same time the healthcare.gov website might be fully operational.

3 Anti-Bullying Fail Real bullying is beyond contempt. Physically harming or psychologically harassing someone who just wants out ought to be stopped. It turns out, however, that anti-Bullying programs actually make bullying worse More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=3650

4 Education Today: Where Bestiality is Innocent Absurdity! Some parents complained to the school where their children attend about a “absurdist” play, “The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?”, involving incest and bestiality that was taught in class. While some parents complained, others seemed happy to defend having students read a play where: “[A] middle-aged man leads an ideal life with his wife and teenage son, until he admits that he is also in love with a goat named Sylvia, with whom he has had sex. The play explores themes of tolerance, morality and revenge, and includes scenes of homosexuality and incest.” More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=3610

Evening again morons.  Busy times at Casa del Crank, hoping to appear a little more often in the coming week than I did last week.  Working tonight.

Let me just say how much fun it is having Mrs. Crank's grand-niece, born drug addicted and now a 13 year old who grew up with no discipline other than the back of a hand and no expectations of being anything more than an excuse for a SS check, now living with us and doing homeschooling.  Pray for patience for us and a bountiful supply of alcohol.

22 Aliens vs Predator was definitely an awful movie. Just how bad was it? I remember thinking at the time..."hey, at least it's better than Alien Resurrection." But, that was an extremely low bar. AVP had a couple of things in it's favour, but that lead chick was insufferably unconvincing. I tend to view AVP as merely incredibly lame. Alien Resurrection... not that was AWFUL.

I hear that. Yeah, those AVP sequels make both AVP and Alien Resurrection look like Citizen Kane. AVP:R wasn't just awful, it was fucking awful. Predators I wanted to like. But was disappointed. The opening and when they're getting their bearings was done very very well. It goes south after that though. My main gripe is that it was more a remake of the original than something new. The "homages" came off as more rip off than tribute. some good bits in it though.

69 Now, if you want to talk bad sci-fi, look for anything with Kurt Wimmer's name attached to it. He wrote and directed "Ultraviolet", absolutely the worst film ever made. Hyper-stylized, numbingly unrelenting and utterly incoherent. He wrote the similarly unrelenting screenplay for the useless "Total Recall" remake. The guy's cinematic douchetude is given away by the fact that his IMDB bio credits him as the inventor of "the firearm martial-art Gunkata." That's basically when actors make sweeping, swirling, poseur-ish moves while shooting lots of bullets, usually with guns in both hands. He choreographed that gay shit into a fictional pseudo martial art. Laaaaame...

82 #39: I tried to search for this recently, but I couldn't find it... several years ago, the Cherokee tribal council held a vote on a resolution generally supporting sports teams having Amerind-themed nicknames, as long as those names were used respectfully.

The resolution failed, but it was close; the vote was 8-6 against. And according to the meeting notes two or three of those "nay" votes were from members who basically liked the idea, but didn't like the nebulous wording. Who decides what "respectful" means in this context, for example?

So, yeah, actual Indians generally don't mind team nicknames like Indians, Chiefs, Braves, Seminoles, etc. Hell, I went to several powwows as a kid with my grandfather, and I can tell you most Amerinds prefer the term Indian over Native American.

86 Now, if you want to talk bad sci-fi, look for anything with Kurt Wimmer's name attached to it. He wrote and directed "Ultraviolet", absolutely the worst film ever made. Posted by: Taro Tsujimoto

It's pretty bad, but you have to see Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters if you think it still deserves that superlative.

He wrote the similarly unrelenting screenplay for the useless "Total Recall" remake.

It was ok, but not terrible.  Overly long chase sequences but, meh.

The guy's cinematic douchetude is given away by the fact that his IMDB bio credits him as the inventor of "the firearm martial-art Gunkata."

Was that Equilibrium or something. Yeah, pretty flaming and overrated.

87 Why is "blackhawks" bad? People get upset at Redskins because they assume it's a reference to skin tone (some say it refers to red war paint, not skin tone), which is a verboten thing in today's America. Apache, Braves, Indians, Blackhawks and other amerindian terms seem different than Redskins to many people. They seem different to me. I'm fine with the Redskins name, but I can see why it upsets some. Part of the issue, of course, is that amerindian tribes are so small in # and as a % of the populace. The Minnesota Vikings are in a part of the country where scandis are the dominant ethnic group. It's one thing if a bunch of Irish Catholics decide to call their school the Fighting Irish vs the Fighting Sioux, or Texans calling themselves Cowboys, or scandis calling themselves Vikings, etc, etc. I'm fine with the amerindian team names, but I do see how it is different since they are tiny in # and generally a vanquished population.

173 (but not Dave's Insanity Sauce, that shit will burn out your colon).

------------------

I like to cut up leftover pork or chicken and mix it with Sweet Baby Ray's barbeque sauce, then put it on a tortilla with a generous dollop of blue cheese dressing and shredded cheese. I'll usually throw in several generous shakes of hot sauce with the BBQ sauce to spice it up.

The wife brought home Dave's Insanity and I threw in the usual generous shakes.

"Generous shakes" pretty well describes the intestinal action I enjoyed for the next several hours. I couldn't believe the pain of ingestion, until I experienced the indescribable ejection. If someone had offered me a large dildo made of ice that night, I would have gratefully sodomized myself with it and wept tears of salvation.

The way I always understood it, there is actually the faintest hint of an "Ng" at the beginning. Very similar to the utterances you might involuntarily make when your worried about your clenched sphincters outside a restroom when you're about to explode and some dipshit is taking their sweet-ass time washing their hands: "Hnnng, hhhnnng." And then the door opens and you dash inside saying "Wihn!" -- except without the "Hnnng, hhhnnng" part.

They did it to help Bill Clinton who was HEAVILY linked to Communism and Communist activity in the 1960s. Coloring Bill as "Red" would have reinforced the narrative that he's a fucking communist (which he is) and that would have been counterproductive to his election. So they stuck us Americans with "Red" and let the Communist Fucker be colored as "Blue" and they've kept it that way every since. We should have thrown a fucking fit and made them switch it back. 281 Life is good in rural Iowa. Last of the tomatoes and peppers lining the kitchen window sills and spreading out over the counter. 2 bushels of potatoes and 12 winter squash in the basement. Tomorrow we harvest basil before the predeicted first frost and put away 10-15 pints of pesto. And, after several frosts there will still be kale ready for harvest. Meanwhile spinach and lettuce in the cold frame will be viable into late December. Alas, soon the chickens will stop laying; but the summer bunnies will grow into rabbits for the pot in the next month or so and venison will bea harvested and made ready for the broiler or the freezer. Be of good cheer, keep your skills sharp, aim small to miss small, and never give up.

John Cheese is another writer there who strikes me as somewhat conservative (or at least a very wise and level-headed moderate), and he's the "John" in Wong's John Dies At The End. You can see his signature in the movie, on the FedEx label when the camera zooms in on it.

Christina H. (although I guess she'll be Christina W. when she returns from her maternity leave) gives me a similar vibe.

And Seanbaby strikes me as a South Park Republican. I read an article on his personal site years ago about his homemade fireworks on the Fourth of July, and I thought, "Now, here's a guy who loves America".

Lauren and ctulhu, I believe it was a Portuguese Jesuit who romanized Vietnamese, during the French colonial era.  Actually I think it's the only tone language that has a romanized alphabet (the weird Chinese version without diacritical marks to indicate tones was everywhere when I was in China in 1989, but I think it was a flop).

Actually sort of makes it nice - you can read basic signs, street signs, etc. without actually speaking the language very much.  I actually took a run at Vietnamese when I had a g/f there and spent quite a bit of time there, but I was "languaged out" after getting heavily into a few other foreign languages earlier in life.   And tone languages, even with the easier romanized alphabet vs. characters ..... are ridiculous for an adult.

Believe Nguyen is the most common Vietanmese surname, and the name of the dynasty that drove China out back in the ????th century.  Very modest love of China is a hallmark of Vietnamese nationalism.  In that regard, the romanized language writing system is considered a national treasure and an admirable act by the colonial occupiers, as it frees Vietnamese from the need to use the characters of the very modestly loved Chinese ....

360 Frankly, I don't think the Mooch-Wookie comparison makes much sense, anyway. Chewbacca was a cultured, hairy alien, who was a powerful warrior and could fly (and probably fix) a space ship, and he communicated in grunts. Certainly highly intelligent.

Mooch is not visibly hairy, not very cultured, and probably can't drive a standard shift car, let alone fly a space ship. She speaks English, but fails to make much sense when so doing. Might be fairly bright, but the chip on her shoulder is so big, it crowds out her brain.

So they've got Holder declaring that Up is Down, Left is Right, Black is White, and Progressive means the 1920's to give them cover. In between the times they use "emanations and penumbras" to carry laws into new areas, they use waivers, interpretations and executive orders to thwart their equal application in areas where they should apply.

403 152 #111: Lauren, it might interest you to know that one of Cracked's senior editors, David Wong, is a self-described conservative. Some of their writers are liberal (I refuse to read anything from Brendan McGinley because it's always "murr, murr, conservatives suck; isn't that funny?"), but for the most part I think they do a pretty good job of not being too stridently leftist. David Wong is conservative like David Brooks is conservative. I have to say, I go there a lot less lately because of all the Proggy BS. It used to be a fun escape from serious stuff, but it's getting contaminated. I was reading an article the other day, and it casually referred to " the Republican party's shaky history of race relations " as a given. The premise wasn't even questioned. I actually posted in the comments " You mean their shaky history of ending slavery, outlawing Jim Crow, championing the Civil Rights acts of '57 and '64 and breaking organized labor's institutionalized exclusion of blacks in the 1970s?" Fun is fun, and it's a humor website so standards are lower, but all too often it reads like it was written by a funny Howard Zinn.

probably not. this is the Hatch Act Guidelines for "political activity" of lower ranking personnel:

May express opinions about candidates and issues. If the expression is political activity, however – i.e., activity directed at the success or failure of a political party, candidate for partisan political office, or partisan political group – then the expression is not permitted while the employee is on duty, in any federal room or building, while wearing a uniform or official insignia, or using any federally owned or leased vehicle.

I gave away 3 issue M-65s (never liked them) they are relatively useless without the liner. I always put the liner under my utilities. It works better. If bucks are not an issue, I would get Gore-Tex. Once that became issue, I never wore the field jacket ever again.

Posted by: non-purist at October 19, 2013 12:28 AM (afQnV)

Nguyen is the most common surname in Vietnam (38.4%), followed by Tran (11%), Le (9.5%), and Pham (7%). This recapitulates the history of Vietnam, where the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945) culled the Tran Dynasty (1225-1400), which in turn slaughtered the Ly/Le/Ly/Le Dynasties (544-602, 960-1009, 1009-1225, 1428-178 who, in turn, had thinned-out the Phams. The fact that there are more Nguyens now is because the Nguyens were the last ones in chairs when the dynastic music stopped.

I would call whomever is in charge & have tantrum. Tonight he cut me off because he was freezing. The rehab calls my house instead of cell. Paul asked nurse to call me . I did not get message until I got home @ 10:30. I called, he has fever of 103.5, which is not that high for him. Last time he was pissed off that they left him in hall most of the night. Nurse called ER & they were waiting for test results. I called ER to tell them I will raise he'll if they leave him in the hall. He is in a room & has another infection, most likely pneumonia. please pray for God to take Paul home, he's suffered enough since March 30. I pray for God to take him.

seems that way to me.  I'll never forget listening to the first McCain/Oblamer debate on the radio.  A huge softball came McCain's way and I started reciting his answer* before he did -- and then the fucker went into a fetal position instead of reciting an answer that even a nobody like me knew by heart.  That was the first time it ever occurred to me that he might be blowing the election on purpose.  Nothing since has changed my mind.

*It was about the debt crisis and Obama puffed his chest up and said he had written a letter (I guess it must have been really sternly worded cuz he was sure that a letter was going to solve the problem).  Well, McCain had written bills, sponsored bills, etc.  The answer was as easy as pointing out that writing a letter is pretty friggin' pathetic in the face of real problems, and that McCain had done far more.  Instead he played dead like he didn't even know his own record.

CarolT: this may sound insane to you and everyone else here, but: I lost my twin sister shortly after we were born. I never knew Diane.

After my parents died (in 1985 and 1989): I had a very vivid dream. In the dream, I walked into the kitchen of the house I grew up in and my mother was there. Smiling. And then my dad walked in from the living room. Well and whole, not sick. And they said, "Donna, we want you to meet someone." I walked into the living room, and a woman who looked exactly like me was sitting on our sofa and smiling. She said "Hello, sister." And I met my twin.

Yes, it was just a dream, CarolT. But since then, I haven't doubted that we will meet our loved ones healthy and whole in heaven.

One of the reasons why that thought is so hard for me to dismiss is the whole Palin/Media phenomena.  To me, knowing what I know as a local, the thing about Palin that was substantially different is that (at the time the media went batshit crazy on her) she had never sold out.  She had her chances but she never took the payoff.  More than that, she gave the whole vibe that money just wasn't that important to her personally.

So, I really do now entertain the possibility that if someone can't be bought they have to be destroyed.  Well, what would be the corollary?  If someone has not been destroyed -- they were probably bought.

Bought by whom?  Dunno -- who bought the media?  Why should it be anyone other than them?

It will be interesting to see how Cruz fairs from here.  Will he have a teenaged daughter that can be used against him?  Will there be an old girlfriend that suddenly has a story to tell?  Did he laugh at a bad joke in the wrong place?  If he starts to look like he is getting traction and won't be bought, he will also have to be destroyed.

478 455 CarolT: this may sound insane to you and everyone else here, but: I lost my twin sister shortly after we were born.

Atheists, sneer if you like.

Posted by: Donna V. at October 19, 2013 01:41 AM (R3gO3)

When I was a kid (like in Elementary School), I gradually developed a rabid atheism. Having skipped second grade, I was overly attached to a sort of junior intellectualism that actually did sneer at belief so that I could feel superior to classmates who were a year older than I was. Around High School, however, it gradually dawned on me that militant atheism was as much a proclamation of Faith as the Catholic catechism, and I came to consider myself more of an agnostic.

Since then, I have come to another interesting fork in the road. I discern little evidence for a being of "good" -- but have come to a sort of Faith regarding the existence of Evil. Mind you, I do not bow to and am thoroughly repulsed by such Evil -- and strongly believe that moral beings should shun Evil with all their might.....but I cannot put a face to "Good" in response.

Bullying is a fact of life. If you don't learn how to deal with it as a kid, you will be unprepared to deal with it as an adult.

Look no further than GOP trolls like Hollowpoint and JeffB telling us why we must vote Republican:

If you leave the party, you're being childish.

If you leave the party, they will punish you by moving even further left.

If the party won't listen to you, maybe it's because you haven't done enough for them.

If you don't vote Republican, it will be all your fault when the scary scary commie Democrats take over.

These are all attempts to bully and intimidate. They can't say "Look at all the good things Republicans have done. They deserve your vote" because Republicans haven't done jack. So threats are all they've got.

Sadly, most conservatives will give in to this.

But - I see good. I believe I will see love ones in heaven. Wishful thinking? But where did the good come from? I don't know why God reveals Himself in such hard-to-discern ways. Why play cat and mouse with us? Why do we have to wonder if you exist, if you're out there? I don't know. All I can do is pay and hope He is listening.

508 Posted by: cthulhu at October 19, 2013 01:57 AM I too am a long-time agnostic, but my struggle has not been the same as yours (that there may not be transcendent Good, but is there transcendent Evil?), but rather the all-important distinction between different levels of agnosticism: Level 1. What one might deem hardcore agnosticism declares that not only does the individual not know if God exists or not, but moreover declares that it is impossible for anyone to know if God exists or not. One might not think that there is an aggressive form of agnosticism, but there is. OR Level 2. What one might deem personal subjective agnosticism, or even (my term) agnosto-agnosticism, which declares that I personally am unsure whether or nor God exists, but also declares that I am also unsure whether or not my lack or surety is a universal constant or just a personal shortcoming of mine. After much cogitation, I've landed on Level 2, which I accept is the only honest and truly humble form of non-belief. I declare my own inability to apprehend things which seem beyond any apprehension: that includes not only the existence o God, but also the nature of everyone else's grasp of reality. For all I know, all believers (and/or all atheists) are ultra-aware super-beings, and I am a uniquely dim-witted dullard. That's true agnosticism. And anyone who doesn't agree with me will be beheaded as they burn at the stake before their constituent meaningless molecules go to hell!

513 Thai Culinary Report As Adriane suggested, the barbecue (pork chops and chicken) was sort of a sweet and sour barbecue but I've certainly had worse. In the effort to have something green in memory of my mom, I gazed upon some sort of casserole looking dish with onions baked into the top. They cut a square and plopped it on my plate. I made it to the table before it burned through the plate and I took a bite. First my tongue retreated into the dark recesses of my mouth in a futile search for moisture. It cowered there, with steam cooking off it, glowing like a coal. My nasal passages flooded with magma. The throat developed fissures where the lunch substance had skidded over it. My belly desperately churned thrice and locked up in paralysis. The tears have cleared enough for me to type this although my sinuses continue to be at crest stage and a massive snotter adorns my chest. I believe the casserole was puréed green chilies held together with a bit of egg. At the molecular level it was radioactive. Whatever it is, all the habanero sauce bottles slid to the far end of the table and huddled, wailing in terror. I have commandeered ALL the ice cream, awaiting the inevitable.

It's a bit more fundamental than that -- there is an Evil "thing". It's out there, irrespective of personality or prime mover. It's similar to a moral sickness, and it can suck in individuals, groups, and nations. And it always tops itself -- when it slaughters innocents, its next thought is to rape the corpses, then mutilate the bodies and then use them to violate the relatives.

Evil is a real thing, and it's loose upon the world.

An external "Good" is a hope -- a shadow of comfort....a deus ex machina in the thread of our existence. I hope as much as anyone that the cavalry will arrive in time -- and I'll say, "c'mon, horse-guys!" -- but the hope is somewhat threadbare.

But I'll readily grant the Good that people do together. There is something to "laying-on of hands", and a circle of people praying does more good than reading out of a book. Coming together with friends is a strength and a comfort.

You know, I think that's not a bad attitude to take. When I've dealt with very militant atheists, I've thought, "Have you ever thought that you are like the color-blind? There have been millions of believers, and you are so sure they're all stupid and blind - how do you know you're the one who can't see what they see?"

I believe (oh Lord, help my unbelief) because life makes no sense to me otherwise. And because Christianity is a wellspring of Western Civilization and undermining one means undermining the other - as leftists well understand and libertarians often do not.

But agnostics frequently have a humility that hardcore atheists do not.

I too am a long-time agnostic, but my struggle has not been the same as yours (that there may not be transcendent Good, but is there transcendent Evil?), but rather the all-important distinction between different levels of agnosticism:

Level 1. What one might deem hardcore agnosticism declares that not only does the individual not know if God exists or not, but moreover declares that it is impossible for anyone to know if God exists or not. One might not think that there is an aggressive form of agnosticism, but there is.

OR

Level 2.

545 One does not expect to see a Very Important Article on a web site that specializes only in chess news, but the German chess site Chessbase did indeed just publish a Very Important Article which should be read by everyone. It seems trivial enough -- an obituary column about a little-known Czech chess-problem composer who died recently after a kind of sad and tragic life riven by depression and alcoholism -- but it reveals some Deep Truths about how communism can destroy a soul: http://tinyurl.com/m257dyz A snippet: "Mario Matouš: 1947–2013 Mario Matouš was born in Mladá Boleslav (55 km north-east of Prague) on June 16th 1947 into an intellectual family – both his parents were language teachers. The three-year-old boy’s first memories are connected with the arrest of his mother, who was imprisoned by the Communist regime for about two years for purely political reasons. As was the practice at that time, the whole family was persecuted. The father was obliged to take a third-rate manual job and the children spent some time in nurseries. Mario declined to participate in “Pioneer” (the mass communist youth organization) and instead worked actively in the Roman Catholic Church. The communists did not forgive such things, and a well-read boy with an excellent academic record obtained permission only to be trained as a fitter. However, Mario, like most chess players, was not manually skilled and thus had a lifetime problem in finding suitable employment." ... etc. Read the Whole Thing. What makes it all so poignant is that at the end they present some of his chess problems, and they are AMAZING, some of most astounding and jaw-dropping chess artwork ever created. But because of his life under communism, that brilliance never shone as brightly as it should have.

Each book and chapter of the Bible comes from a different perspective -- to say that the whole is "true" or "false" is a telltale sign that the speaker is on the fringes of understanding.

Take, for instance, the Apocrypha -- there are Biblical writings which are found in early works closely bound to accepted writings (e.g. Book of Tobit; Book of Enoch), which were excerpted from later Bibles. Why should other books be canon while these works are treyf?

Gandhi was full of shit about a lot of stuff. He also suggested the Jews in Europe could give the Nazis a comeuppance by committing mass suicide. Like this would make the Nazis feel bad or something rather than think how remarkably convenient it was. But then, Gandhi never had to face the Nazis directly and probably never gave much thought to what would happen if the UK was conquered.

One of my favorite alternate history stories deals with that. Gandhi and Nehru realize much too late that non-violent resistance is useless against people who were planning to kill you all along.

581 I've never found Pascal's Wager compelling. God would know when someone was a believer solely as a safety measure and condemn them for being a weasel. Your only hope if you find yourself confronted in an unexpected afterlife is stick to your guns and hope you behaved well in spite of not believing in any punishment to come for doing otherwise.

582 576 There is a lot here that rings with truth. Evil exists, and roams the world -- but our lot is to oppose it. If there is a divine intercessor, it shouldn't be counted upon -- because it is the duty of every moral being to fight Evil whether or not we triumph....because our opposition is, in itself, a victory for Good.

That's why "a force for good ever want to waste time proving anything to any being that had not yet joined the fight against evil". Because it can create a new ally out of a former enemy.

But that is the core of Pascal's Wager. That some things being unknowable in life, it is better to believe and thus be prepared for what might come rather than not. It's an early version of Game Theory. If the Church's version of things is correct, you are rewarded for believing. If the Church's claim are just made up nonsense, there is no penalty for believing or not believing. Thus the only choice that produces a reward is believing.

My take is that insincere belief would be detected and have negative results. So it is better to be sincere in your belief or disbelief but still have some acknowledgement of the need for morality in your life.

It is my sincere belief than anyone who kicked a dog is going to find themselves in an uphill battle in the afterlife -- and anyone who abandoned a dog to die in the wilderness is virtually certain to feel eternal torment.

599 My take is that insincere belief would be detected and have negative results. So it is better to be sincere in your belief or disbelief but still have some acknowledgement of the need for morality in your life. Posted by: Epobirs The fundamental flaw here is that you can't make a rational intellectual decision to have a "sincere" belief in something metaphysical. Pascal's Wager is therefore a paradoxical and thus impossible course of action. Not sure why no philosophers have ever noticed this before. You can't logically choose to abandon logic. Therefore anyone attempting to follow Pascal's advice will always be engaging in "insincere" belief. Which doesn't count. So the whole proposition falls apart.

Posted by: Epobirs apologies if I was unclear. my point was, regarding pascals wager, that belief is binary, either you do or do not believe. any false belief, which may fool other people, will be detected by an omnisicent being. I always thought Pascals wager was as imortant in dictating behavior as belief, maybe more so. if you are considering what you should do in the face of the unknowable, then choosing the "right" thing even if you are doing so as a safety measure indicate either that you believe God exists or that it is possible and if so you want to be on God's side. so the behavior element of the wager is more important than the belief. doling out admission into heaven based solely on belief, assuming it require certain and unwavering belief, is not really fair in a world where nothing is knowable and somehow we have knowledge about the concept of a apriori knowledge, truth, and so on. for an omniscient being to give us knowledge of what is knowable and unknowable and demand belief is not so fair.

well, I will take it as a given that others wish to enslave us, and that it is their nature.  I see no reason to deny it.

I will even take it as a given that my resistance to slavery is probably doomed -- if for no other reason than the merger of the last 5k years of history and the statistical concept of reversion to the mean.  Or, perhaps the reason will be the tendency of a certain percentage of the population to prefer being subject over being a citizen.  That is also in their nature, and I can see no reason to deny that either.

However, I am still going to oppose slavery because in my core I have no choice.  It is simply something I have to do.  I know I'm losing, and I suspect I am doomed -- just as you say.  But, that doesn't actually change anything.

The Brits, much like their Anglosphere offshoots, truly believed in the rule of law, equality under the law, and so on. When faced with the fact that they were acting contrary to that, that essence of equality and law won out. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. I think it only had a few hundred views when I found it. I downloaded that sucker the minute I saw it. Here's the downloading utility I used. Save it for future reference. http://www.savevid.com/

643 'morning...rude awakening: Kilcullen, Out of the Mountains thread link. "Even beyond this, Kilcullen emphasized the growing political importance of cities, as administrative units, and the urgency with which we need to understand their functioning." =Civilization devolves back to Greek City States, at best? As much democracy as you can hold in your hand. Doesn't Kilcullen's guerrilla pragmatism ignore the imbalance that remains from globalists in whatever form they hold to conquer targets? Inflict their attacks on a desired city, removing defense and infrastructure, plunder. Just as occurs now. Only with whatever means remain.

644 Catch up, Catsup to Salsa to Hazmat Habanero "The Kos Kids Learn About Obamacare" Sadly, the comments on Daily Kos suggest that most young leftists have still not seen the light. The consensus is that the poster needs to get his mind right. In the old days, it was said that a neoconservative was a liberal who had been mugged by reality. Today’s liberals are apparently so obtuse that they can be mugged by reality–or by Barack Obama–and not notice. Posted on October 15, 2013 by John Hinderaker @ PowerLine

Hey Dave. Gallagher. The Master. I hate him so much. My fave live recording of his... live at the Celtic 94. "Continental Op" (first song)... on fire.

Are you saying that there are some foods that it is not acceptable to slather with salsa?  Interesting.

654 I don't really have the time to post much on it today, due to a road trip for the birthday of a kid, but the Grambling State football forfeit deserves some attention. The usual idiots are trying to blame Jindal for the university's funding issues, which they claim are at fault. Given what I know of the HBCUs in Louisiana, though, this is going to end up being a case where the school administration was stealing from the till. The SI piece on the player revolt mentioned facility improvements funded privately that were blocked by the school because the funds weren't "filtered correctly". That is pretty much a code phrase for "We want to we our beak on the spending". The kinds of coach firings, skimping on meals, and going on the cheap for travel smacks of the same thing, The school funds their entire athletics budget based on selling home games to play in "Classic" games in cities like Kansas City and Indianapolis. Putting players on the bus for those 1500 mile round trips vs flights may have been cheaper but I figure someone took a cut of the "savings" for themselves.

655 Thanks o-man, I had not seen that one. I saw him play live in 1973 and never forgot. A friend once remarked that it was unusual that a country with the musical tradition of Ireland had only produced U2. I about choked. Rory, Thin Lizzy, Gary Moore.....

656 @10 Conservative Crank:

Good luck with your nephew. I hope you can help turn his life around. I know it's a huge challenge.

We knew a couple who had kids in the same grades as our kids in grade school.  They took in their neice under similar circumstances.  They tried for three years to help her. They put her in their kids little Catholic school, did everything they could to help her.  They finally gave up after she stole their car.

658 As a proud owner of Vizslas I object mightily to a picture of a Vizsla being used alongside all those scumbags. The only scandal in which my dogs have ever been involved is chasing a deer for a quarter mile or so and, when found, trying to play with them. Kill! I yelled. Attack! Unfortunately, they didn't understand those words.
