Overnight Open Thread (1 March 2013)

Question for conservatives: Why Are Your Children Still In Public School? I'm sure time and money are big reasons. Private schools aren't exactly cheap and home schooling requires time to do it. Work eats up most of my time and I haven't won the lottery yet so I picked a very good school district and monitor my kids education closely. Maybe when we set up AoS HQ compounds, we'll set up a proper education system but until then, one has to play the cards their dealt.

It's a shame but hey, in this economy, it's not like the military needs to spend money on recruiting. Spending Cuts Due To Ground Navy's Blue Angels Team. Of note, cancelling the shows only saves about $28M which the government spent today in less than a minute.

Sad

I could understand why some poor citizen would fall for this but the idea that someone from Mitch McConnell's office would boggles the mind. OK, not really. We are talking about the GOP here. Guantanamo Joke Flies Over The Head Of Some Readers. I suppose we hand out so many benefits to non-Americans that it would be believable that we would do something like this. I do love this part though.

“By allowing the detainees to use the Department of Veterans Affairs, we hope to completely crush their souls with bureaucracy, which to be noted, is completely different than torture.”

Speaking of drinking, would you pay $12,916 For A Cocktail?

Winston (approximated)
2 ounces 1858 Croizet Cognac Cuvée Léonie ($156,760 per bottle, at least when last found at auction; Churchill and Eisenhower allegedly drank this Cognac while planning D-Day, hence the cocktail’s name)
2/3 ounce Grand Marnier Quintessence ($800 a bottle)
2/3 ounce Chartreuse V.E.P. Yellow ($150 or so)
1 dash Angostura bitters
Stir with ice, serve to billionaire.
Cost per cocktail: $12,916.

16 The Progressive Hydra The Progressive left’s multi-faceted attack on America involved separate organizations that mutually reinforce each other and forward a common cause, or at least direction for society. The trinity of colleges & public schools, the news media, and the entertainment industry is one example, as is the Stand Alone Complex that enables the otherwise uninformed to be used as unwitting political tools. Labor Union Reports discusses a prime example of this over at RedState. A leaked memo from the shadowy coordinating group called Blueprint NC (North Carolina) has shown light on how the Who’s Who of Progressive North Carolina interest groups and foundations have been partnering to “Eviscerate, Mitigate, Litigate, Cogitate, and Agitate” in order to achieve their goals. Right on the surface but WRONG underneath.  The Air Force is drooling over my son who is an EE/CompSci grad looking to serve.   Your comment applies to Army and Navy grunts.  But not the high tech Air Force world.  Absolutely no offense meant. My comment solely applies to the recruiting angle.  Not dissing the incredibly awesome branches of the DOD or the patriots that serve.  Just a recruiting view.

67 My kids are in a decent public school district in My older one was worried about the pace/intensity of college compared to high school. I told him he left for a BCS championship university that he would be surprised at just how bad most public schools are and, as a result, how ill-prepared his fellow freshmen will be compared to him. But study, manage your time, and suck every bit of value out of your coursework that you can. Two months later, he told me that it turned out that I did know something.

83 that school was in PA, btw. In my work I help parents with advocacy issues in their districts - special ed, et cetera - so I've been in a lot of schools and seen a metric fuckload of bad stuff. There are times when I tell parents that they don't need an advocate- we can "win" a case, but it will likely make no difference from the kid's perspective - but that they need a realtor.

Path 1. Explore the middle rgound between school and homeschool. Dunno 'bout your state, but nothing in Hawaii law requires that homeschooling parents provide instruction between 0800 and 1430. It's legal for parents to extend daycare to age 18 and provide instruction in the evening. Just get five families together and hire an unemployed neighborhood kid with a BS in Econ or some natural science (Chemistry majors can teach History but History majors can't teach Chemistry). Take the GED at 17 and attend a community college for the first two years. Then, if the status matters, transfer to a 4-year college. Nobody will care if you don't have a high school transcript or even look where you went to high school.

Path 2. Study Gandhi's principle of satyagraha (non-violent non-cooperation with evil), read Melville's story "Bartleby the Scrivener" ("I prefer not to") and O. Henry's story "The Ransom of Red Chief" and encourage your kid to drop out in school. They can compel your attendance but they cannot compel your attention. If Just two or three kids set this example they'll beg you to let your kid spend his days in the school library. Crack 1200 (old style) on the SAT and a community college will admit you regardless of the high school transcript.

96 Evening all, We have homeschooled/private schooled/international schooled/DOD schooled/and public schooled. Our kids learned the most with homeschool, were happiest in international school, and hated private/DOD. I will say we are very lucky with our current public school, as the teachers are almost all conservative, Godly, and extraordinarily helpful. But you have to be in the right school district for that to happen. And just buying a house in an expensive district isn't a guarantee of a good district these days. Often, you will have teachers who resent the "wealthy" parents and kids, and bring their prejudices into the classroom, teaching the kids to resent themselves and their parents for their success. The key is parent involvement-first in choosing the right school fit for their family, and second in remaining involved with their kids throughout their school years, not just in elementary

Good news everyone!:

Pregnant former Playboy model Holly Madison is seeking tips from other mothers as she prepares to become a first-time parent. The “The Girls Next Door” star recently took to her blog to ask moms for some very specific advice.

She writes, “This might sound gross, but I’m totally planning on having my placenta turned into pills I can take after giving birth. I heard it helps women recover faster and I want to recover as quickly as I can! Have any other moms out there done this?”

CCW Morons tell me this:

In the store today and an asshole walks in. Evidently in a rage, he pushes past me, I slow up to block him further because I hate people up in my mix. He goes to his car and throws something at his bitch. As he pulls out, somebody walks in front of him. he locks it up and jumps out and screams at the guy. Missed the rest.

I know I couldn't draw down on him for yelling, but when could I? Do I have to take an ass whooping before I pull it  out?

104 So much of the public school article was devoted to the importance of teaching classic fiction. My stepsons and sister were/are made to read classic fiction in public high school, so hmmm. The real concerns I have are more about the other kids and kids.being taught by incompetent or checked out teachers and about the abysmal state of special education than about tge schools moving from classic fiction to pure.nonfiction. I have kids in public school because the private schools in our price range aren't any good. I don't homeschool because I work and frankly I know my limits. I may well send my kids to private high schools, if we really feel that the environment or the curriculum at the public school is bad for them...but so far, once we were able to move into a good district, we've had good experiences. It was important to me that we move to a district with magnet options, and I'm happy we were able to do that---one of my boys just got into our district's science and tech magnet fir middle school, and I'm honestly floored by how great an opportunity it is, even compared to private schools we looked at.

134 110 USS diversity,

Check you local laws but probably no....

in most states you have a duty to not initiate hostilities and to stop once a threat is neutralized the law gets more complex the further it goes.

It is *always* best to not pull...

I carried for ~3 years and only drew once and then was not lead and had weapon tempested and frankly felt like a dork for drawing......

I never cleared leather by which I mean drew and drew a bead once despite several physical confrontations....

Now if he was beating the guy and the guy looked to be in eminent danger of death or grievous bodily harm DEPENDING on your state law and local DA you MIGHT have the right to intercede....

Know it front to back and have a card prepared if you ever God forbid have to pull and squeeze  have a card with the correct answer on it....

Ayoob on a Post CCW shoot
That weapon is a lifesaver literally and figuratively but if you ever have to pull it and squeeze it is the heaviest thing besides a kid you'll ever have in your hand....

137 I served on a national board for an issue-specific educational need. I was the only lay advocate - as in, the only one with "sitting at the table, figuring it out" experience. The other members were educational professionals, psychologists, and university professors. It was fascinating. And irritating. As we were planning the conference, one member said that she'd like to run a session on "Homeschooling for one year during middle school, travelling Europe with your child, and exploring the cultural and linguistic differences during that year." as she had done. This was met with murmurs of approval I then asked if I could run a session on "What to do when your school district treats you like crap, ignores their Federal and State obligations to your child, and dares you to take them to Due Process." ... with a follow-up session on "Due Process - How to beat the ever-living hell out of your district without incurring a lot of, if any, legal fees." That, it was deemed, was too confrontational. Besides, districts and parents should be partners in the child's education. We don't want to look at this in an adversarial model. .

Yeah, I know, that government involvement would produce shitty art, that's the point. That's exactly what it does now, except the "art" is anti-American. All the people supported by the NEA and NEH should be working at Burger King, and if they had any integrity whatsoever as artists, they would do that before accepting government money.

Re the rage rat and CC, the situation as described did not come close to a "draw" situation. My training emphasized that you only draw if you are planning on shooting to kill, which means there must be a danger of imminent extreme bodily harm to you or someone   present.

Some CCW trainers advocate "adjusting" an imaginary holstered gun in such a situation. You don't adjust the actual gun as that tells the jerk where your gun is located.

I get an immediate "fight" reflex       in such circumstances, so I have to be very careful to not overreact.

My mom pulled me out of public school in the late '80s; she was not  even as politically aware then as she is today and she  knew  how evil gubmint school indoctrination was.  She knew the indoctrination/brain-washing had hurt my two older  siblings  and she'd had enough.

186 I located and relocated for good public schools. Probably ended up paying as much in school taxes as I would have tuition. My kids started in a wonderful small neighborhood school in northern VA. When my son was finishing 5th grade, I got lucky and found a job in PA and we moved into a district with fabulous middle and high schools. We were especially lucky that both the elementary and middle/high schools had superb music and arts programs. The district we moved away from has noticeably poorer results in its middle and high schools that are infested with gangs and bullies, crappy arts programs, and bad records getting kids into top colleges. Even so, I have found it a little troubling that the district we are in now has few really senior level teachers. Those that my kids have had were phenomenal. The young ones just starting out, not always so great. It's ridiculous how much difference it makes to have teachers that are creative, have a personality, and are enthusiastic about their jobs. I don't think private schools have a monopoly on those. Had some fun a couple of years ago when my son's English teacher made national news for having a blog in which she bitched about her students and called them names. She was fired.

188 160 USS Diversity,

It all depends on the law if you sister is married to a CCW Lawyer ask him...even pay and pay him a buck for retainer...

In Florida I THINK and don't take my word for it you can intercede for rape or imminent grievous bodily harm for another individual but I do not know.

Ohio is different...

http://www.buckeyefirearms.org/node/7852

A defendant must show that he did not have a duty to retreat or avoid the danger. A person must retreat or avoid danger by leaving or voicing his intention to leave and ending his participation in the confrontation.

*you* are the defendant.....

and the pertinent and narrow rules on third party intercession are

A person may defend another only if the protected person would have had the right to use deadly force in self-defense themselves. Under Ohio law, a person may defend family members, friends or strangers. However, just as if he were protecting himself, a person cannot use any more force than is reasonable and necessary to prevent the harm threatened.

A defendant, who claims he used deadly force to protect another, has to prove that he reasonably and honestly believed that the person he protected was in immediate danger of serious bodily harm or death and that deadly force was the only way to protect the person from that danger. Furthermore, the defendant must also show that the protected person was not at fault for creating the situation and did not have a duty to leave or avoid the situation.

Now what the above is is the letter of the law but the SCoO has ruled that

The Ohio Supreme Court has ruled that a person risks criminal charges if he interferes in a struggle and protects the person who was at fault, even if he mistakenly believed that person did not create the situation.

and that is where the fun begins.....what happens is you never know what a DA will do or what other parameters the PD are functioning under politically to a certainty.

best Ohio CCW I dealt with told me as a Licensed Bodyguard that unless the third party was my principal or on death's door to NEVER intercede.

Now this interpretation of law is more liberal than the mid 90s when I was active, but I am saying to you I think the "logic" behind this is specious and that a clean shoot to be a 'good neighbor" should legally be no more onerous than saving them from a fire would be....

but as our selfless humble Lightbringer says, "sven is not a dicatator" and neither luckily a dick taster....

Safe journey

RE Public Schools:

1. Full disclosure, wifey is a teacher. Don't hang her.

2.Charters are bullshit. They get the teachers (same training requirements) that public schools reject, in many cases.

3. Not all schools are set up to turn your kid into an O-Bot. I think it's regional. That stupid fat bitch in Chicago is NOT representative.

4. YES   Homeschool by all means, if you can. The  public   curriculum is written by publishing companies infested with Libtards. And they ae in bed with legislatures, even so-called Republicans.

5. Unions are killer, and there are sure as hell a lot of bad teachers out there, like any other  business, but there are also some Republicans who can't stand the lefty horseshit either, and try to counter it. I know. I hear about it.

Yep. Some try to be tough, and yet want to be liked. I've spent half my time dealing with a female peer's disgruntled subordinates, trying to chill them out and yet not get involved in how she runs her department. Part of the problem is that middle and elementary school sucks, and so by the time they're in high school kids are so far behind.  This is combined with an educational system that is artificially organized around keeping kids in until they are 18.  Realistically, most students could probably finish the majority of their studies by the time they're 15-16.  Anything else is gravy.

I wanted to say something about how it's not sequestration that cuts this stuff; it's priorities set by the executive, and said executive choosing to threaten science and tech so that their minions can bring it to slashdot and spread the meme about Republicans hating science.

But that turns Linked In into a political forum. Which is not what I am there for.

What should I do - just drop this dickhead from my "connections"? Explain that I don't want to read his political drivel on my latest updates?

The GOP seems to think that with the right political messaging and some maneuvering on Capitol Hill, they can win over the population and gradually transform things.  This is false.  They need to shut down the government, to force issues like the sequester, and treat it like ripping off a bandage: yes it will hurt, but it's temporary.

well, this is very easy for me to say, since I don't really participate in LinkedIn, but it seems to me, that conservatives in general are too timid in politicizing the battle space even when the other side has already lobbed the first volley.  You would not be turning LinkedIn into a political battle ground, your interlocutor did that.

Girl Scout Cookies

When I was a young kid, my older sisters were in Girl Scouts and my Mom was a leader, and also a Cookie Captain for a bunch of years (which is how she met Erma Bombeck, who was also a Cookie Captain in that neck of the woods, but I digress).

This time of year the dining room of our house was FILLED with GS Cookies, I shit you not.  I mean literally there were hundreds of boxes of Thin Mint, Savannahs, sandwich cookies, some sugar coated cookie that I can't remember.

Some just throw all that national stuff out. But I would investigate very carefully before letting my kid join a troop. And I won't buy their cookies anymore, although I have been known to STEAL thin mints when I see them.

Light travels at roughly 186,000 miles per second in a vacuum.

At that speed, it circles the earth seven times in a second, or goes to the moon and back (half-million mile round-trip) in three seconds.

A light-year, the distance light travels in a year, is roughly six trillion miles.

The federal government spends 3.8 trillion dollars in a year.

543 Ah now I get it.  As far as the food, I have seldom found anything I didn't like.  I stay away from the prepared foods as the price of your cart goes up quick for your groceries.  If you know how to cook you can prepare damn good meals from there.  The meat department isn't much.  The people who shop there depends on the neighborhood of the store.  The store whos food and prices don't impress me is Walmart.  The produce is really crappy.  For a little higher price but top of the line quality around her hit Kroger.  Barmey Kroger was a Cincinnati boy.

556 220 My problem with social and political "indoctrination" is not with the teachers, it is with my kids' classmates who have stupid liberal atheist parents and believe everything they are told. My daughter heard all the bullshit about Mitt Romney wanting to ban tampons and throw gay people in prison, and about his creepy Mormonism, and it wasn't from her teachers. ======== Yup. You know what they say, "Put canaries with sparrows and the canaries will sing like sparrows. But the sparrows will never sing like a canary." Some of you may think you can deprogram them, and God bless, but you are fighting a losing cause. With a strong church and lots of time with you, they have a fighting chance. But at some point you've got to realize how much effort youre putting into treading water and hoping for the best. Your kid is a good kid, a great kid even, but who are the popular kids?

708 Homeschool doesn't mean you have to make the curriculum from scratch. There are co-ops and communities you can join. We have two of our kids now (and the third a few years ago) in a Classical Conversations community. It's intensive with a lot of focus on memorization of facts. Once a week they have a day in class with a tutor and their peers. One of the strengths of the curriculum is essay writing. You can also mix and match. The classical Christian school where I teach Greek part-time allows homeschoolers to enroll a la carte. They can take one or more classes, paying about 1/4 of the full tuition for each class, and still participate in the school's extracurricular activities. I saw a poll that says more parents customize their coffee than their children's education. That's inexcusable when there are so many more options and so much more support for homeschooling.

722 For us spaceflight enthusiasts, Friday was a day of tension and high drama. After a perfect launch, the SpaceX Dragon suddenly developed a problem as soon as it separated from the rocket booster. The solar panels didn't deploy on schedule, and the webcast ended without any details, just a mention that there would be a press conference "in a few hours". At NASASpaceflight.com, the servers crashed due to thousands of people around the world all hitting "refresh" at the same time. For a while, we were getting bits of information from Elon Musk's tweets. Dragon has four thruster groups, or "pods", and only one was working. This meant that the spacecraft was barely controllable. (Think of a one-armed man in a rowboat.) At first he said that solar array deploy was postponed until they could get another thruster pod working. This made sense, since if the spacecraft was tumbling, you wouldn't want to have those "wings" flapping around, as they could be damaged by the stresses. Eventually they had to deploy them anyway, since the temperature of the actuators was dropping rapidly and they were in danger of freezing. The lack of control also made communications difficult. Needless to say, this meant that there would be no rendezvous with the ISS on Saturday morning as planned, and it wasn't certain that Dragon could even be recovered and make a controlled landing. By mid-afternoon, Elon announced that a second thruster pod was working, and a couple of hours later, all four were back online. Dragon started making burns to match its orbit with the ISS. Last I heard, the spacecraft was operating normally. They haven't announced a new rendezvous time, but it could happen on Sunday or Monday. NASA will have to be satisfied that Dragon is under control before giving permission to approach the ISS. There are a number of possible causes for the malfunction, and at the moment there is much speculation. But the SpaceX controllers and engineers are definitely heroes, and they salvaged the spacecraft from what could well have been a mission-ending problem. On most normal days, I check in frequently here at the HQ and a few other sites to see what is going on. Yesterday, the only website I was interested in was NASASpaceflight.com.

Home schooling isn't as hard as it seems to outsiders. There's a lot of organizations that will help with setting up your program and the books are all available online. The biggest issue is time since we still have to work to pay for our massive government waste.

My three kids have had different educations. The oldest was strictly public schooling. He did alright, but we live in an extremely conservative part of an extremely conservative state. Most of the teachers here are probably Republicans. He's now going to school to be a Physicians Assistant after serving 5 years in the Navy.

The second child had a mixture of public and home schooling because of health issues. He was home schooled for most of his elementary and all of his middle school years. I don't think his education was as good as it could have been, but it was probably still better than average. He's working full time in a machine shop while going to college part time with a goal of going into the ministry.

Our last child went to public school for 6th-8th grades and begged us to go back to home schooling. She liked the classes of public school but hated the daily soap opera that kids would bring to class. Of the three, she's the most like her daddy, which is pretty terrifying.

I hope she gets better.  Couples that endure for decades wind up becoming in some ways a gestalt personality that has depths of passion seldom seen even by the children.  Can be a positive or a negative if communication ever breaks down your dad sounds like a mensch.

747 Missed a public school rant, damn. On costs, I've got three kids in Catholic school, inside the beltway for 10k. It's doable.

748 Missed the public school rant also.  Depends on where you are.  Our kids go the public school.  I pay for it,  we're going to use it.  We're going to be a little salt and light.  It's more conservative than most because of the demographic.  We keep tabs on the kids schoolwork and point out the PC BS and show them how to.  Oh,  and they had a "diversity celebration" not too long ago.  Total bust.  Couldn't get volunteers (usually not a problem) and we hear the turnout sucked.

Now a little story about private schools.  A friend of ours has a gifted nephew.  Was doing algebra "for fun" around age 5 or 6.  Was going to a very expensive,  large,  well known in the area,  private school.  The parents asked about accelerated math programs for their son and they were told there wasn't one.  The school wouldn't budge.  They put him in a public school because they offered accelerated learning programs.  Drugs,  sex,  students texting nude photos of each other,  third graders calling their teacher a "bitch" - it's also in that same private school.

A lot of the "Hey Christians!  You have to pull your kids out of public schools" is a marketing plan for the private schools.
