Benghazi Dirt: Obama Administration up to its Neck in Covert Acts that Led to Benghazi Deaths
Pretty much everything that people have speculated about the Obama administration's activities in Libya up to the attack seems to have been true:
(Deputy National Security Advisor) John Brennan also ran a highly compartmentalized program out of the White House in regard to weapons transfers, and Stevens would not have been trusted with that type of information. Stevens likely helped consolidate as many weapons as possible after the war to safeguard them, at which point Brennan exported them overseas to start another conflict.
Behind closed doors, President Obama had given his counterterrorism adviser, John Brennan, carte blanche to run operations in North Africa and the Middle East, provided he didn't do anything that ended up becoming an exposé in The New York Times and embarrassing the administration. In 2012, a secret war across North Africa was well underway.
With JSOC (Joint Special Operations Command), Brennan waged his own unilateral operations in North Africa outside of the traditional command structure. These Direct Action (DA) operations, unlike the traditional ISR missions mentioned above, were 'off the books' in the sense that they were not coordinated through the Pentagon or other governmental agencies, including the CIA.
The aftermath of one of these secret raids into Libya would have grave consequences for all of them, including former Navy SEALs Ty Woods and Glen Doherty. SOFREP believes the Benghazi attack on 9/11/12 was blowback from the late-summer JSOC operations that were threatening the Al Qaeda-aligned militant groups (including Ansar Al-Sharia) in Libya and North Africa, now a leading base of operations for Islamic extremism.
And when things went bad Obama and his entire staff were basically AWOL while Americans were fighting and dying in Benghazi.
Dorner v. LAPD: The Evidence So Far
When I read through Dorner's manifesto I figured his account of being unfairly fired was self-serving but that also given the details he probably did get a raw deal. Not that that justifies anything he did after that.
But Aaron Worthing has delved into the files released by the LAPD and found that their firing of him was probably justified since Dorner's account wasn't credible, was contradicted by civilian eye-witnesses, and seemed to be retaliation against the officer who had just given him an unsatisfactory review.
So to believe Dorner, you have to believe that he kept quiet about an incident that didn't trouble him when it happened, just... because. You have to believe all three hotel employees were lying. You have to believe that Gettler was cut but not bruised. You have to believe that Evan's shoes left no dirt on him. You have to believe it is entirely a coincidence that Dorner first brought up the complaint after he got a poor review. And you have to believe that three kicks were somehow so horrendous they ate at his conscience but not enough to bring it up right after it happened. That is not to say there isn't any evidence besides his own word to support the claim Evans kicked Gettler, but do you find any of it credible? You have the videotaped statement of a lunatic who had to be led to each answer, which was still inconsistent with what Dorner said, and the hearsay of Richard Gettler.
DHS Claims Right to Seize Your Electronics Within 100 Miles of Border
Well DHS has always claimed the right to inspect any electronics when you enter the US but this seems like quite an expansion of power:
In a not-so-unexpected move, the Department of Homeland Security has concluded that travelers along the nation's borders may have their electronics seized and the contents of those devices examined for any reason whatsoever - all in the name of national security. According to legal precedent, the Fourth Amendment - the right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures - does not apply along the border. The memo highlights the friction between today's reality that electronic devices have become virtual extensions of ourselves housing everything from e-mail to instant-message chats to photos and our papers and effects - juxtaposed against the government's stated quest for national security. By the way, the government contends the Fourth-Amendment-Free Zone stretches 100 miles inland from the nation's actual border.
UK Soldiers Get Their Own Personal Drones
...British soldiers in Afghanistan have been issued several Black Hornet Nanos, a palm-sized UAV that can scout around corners and obstacles for hidden dangers.Each UAV measures just 4 x 1 inches (10 x 2.5cm) and weighs a mere 0.6 ounces (16 grams), making it easy for troops to carry along with the rest of their gear. A built-in camera transmits live video and still images to a handheld control unit at a range of up to half a mile (800 meters).
The Black Hornet Nano flies like a mini helicopter, but is stable enough to withstand harsh conditions and heavy wind. On a full charge, the tiny UAV can fly up to 30 minutes at a top speed of 22 mph (35 km/h), giving soldiers on the ground ample time to quickly survey an area. An operator can also use the control unit to pilot the drone directly or input a set of GPS coordinates for it to follow on its own.

As I've written before I'm very very happy with my Sodastream. But despite its convenience and savings there are those who demand it be boycotted. Why? Because it's an Israeli company and therefore must be evil or something.
But on top of all those reasons to buy a Sodastream, now there's another. I hadn't known this before, but the company is an Israeli one, and, predictably, all the self-righteous leftist friends of the PLO would like you to boycott it. In an unintentional but predictable irony, this seems to be in part because the Israeli firm hires Palestinians to work in its plant-and of course, as the capitalist pig fat cats they are, therefore exploits the poor workers.
About the only negative to Sodastream is that they charge too much for CO2 refills. But just buy one of these adapters and you can use paint ball CO2 tanks and their refills are only $4 and the same grade of CO2 as Sodastream's.

The Second Amendment is an individual right that is fully applicable to the states. Though there have been moves to outright restrict this right, it would seem that California is trying something a bit more “clever”: Requiring that gun owners be insured.

I'm using a Colt 4x20 scope that fits on the carry handle. Scope is adjustable for yardage once zero is set at 100 yards. Slotted so the iron sights are still avaliable. Coated lenses, nitrogen filled - going on ebay for $ 200-300, they were 300 new when I got mine in '91. There is a chinese copy out for $70 but it is a chinese copy.

last fall during the campaign cycle I was up for 3-4 days at a time....
my brain turned to mush two or three times...well if you're being charitable I guess...or once in 2001 if you're not...
trust me I'm a lot more coherent than I was in October.

I like the idea of the fixed sights being usable underneath.
Yes, it's the A2 with the fixed handle. The way the uppers have exploded in price, it makes more sense to get some high-quality optics rather than getting a new upper and putting my Remington 700's scope on the bushmaster.
The deer distances will be less than 100 yards (probably 50 yards or less). If I can't be sure of a one-shot kill I won't take the shot.

The writers of this stuff keep asking me to believe these huge whoppers. First, that Obama has any interest at all in whacking Al Qaeda leaders given the way he waffled on whacking Bin Laden, and second, that the NYT would ever do an "expose" on any sort of covert activities that Obama and his minions might attempt.

Also, your money. If you are driving through pretty much any part of Texas, do NOT carry a large amount of cash. A woman was stopped a couple of months ago and deputies detected a "strong odor of marijuana" in her car and asked to search. She said sure, go ahead, and they confiscated her money. She had no pot or anything illegal, but still had a hell of a time getting her money back. Was she stupid to carry that much cash? Yes, but it was hers and it isn't illegal.

If you go with picitinny rail scope mounts you can move scopes around easier

They have a new reticle design that's really nice.
I was thinking of going with the picatinny rail system. I like the idea of getting the scope exactly where I want it. Also being able to switch it to a different rifle. Do you have to buy Bagder or are there some good mounts that are less money ?

The feature is called Snap and was introduced in Windows 7. Most people like it, a lot. So much so that the control panel where it can be turned off is the Ease of Access panel mainly used by those with physical impairments.
Any program you install should appear on the Start screen. It's pretty much the same structure that has been around since the Program Manager days in Win3.x and all the generations of the Start menu. This is why stuff that was written for Win3.x can start work correctly, as least as far as installation goes.
If they installer is set up incorrectly you may have to right-click on the Start screen and select Show All. The tile can then be pinned to the main screen. Once you've launched the program you can pin it to the task bar or make a desktop icon.
It is completely unnecessary to go rooting around for the executable if you know its name. Just start typing the name and Windows will start a search to show you the likely candidates, narrowing the range as you enter more characters of the file's name. Again, this isn't new in Windows 8 and was introduced in Vista, although Win8 has an improved implementation.
Don't like Secure Boot? Turn it off in the firmware. I've yet to see a machine that doesn't offer that option.

I had some fun watching people walk their dogs through the snow on Friday while I was out shovelling snow; and this morning I saw a neighbour across the street playing with her golden retriever in the snow. She'd toss a bit of snow in the air and the dog would jump up to bite it in midair. I'd noticed in past snowstorms that when she or her husband was shovelling the driveway and sidewalk, that the dog would chase the snow being tossed from the shovel. Vewy, vewy cute.

You aren't 'exiting' to the desktop. The desktop is an app called Explore.exe. Always has been ever since it replaced PROGMAN in Win95. The Start Screen is just a full screen menu. I think you can muster the capacity to locate your installed apps and make the adjustments you want.
Win8 whining is so tedious. I've been using it on a laptop over a year and it took me about five minutes to learn everything I needed to know. I do IT work but I hardly consider myself a genius. I just don't freak out at the unfamiliar.
Nor do you have to 'edit' the firmware. It's a setting in a menu. It's that simple. If the firmware makes it any harder than that, take the machine back where you bought and buy something after more research. Secure Boot is something that should have been in PCs decades ago but the original IBM design was never intended to be around more than brief time to prove to the company that this was a real market. UEFI replacing BIOS took an absurdly long time due to foot dragging by OEMs who didn't want to do the work.
Part of that means when a company sells a machine that includes a particular OS, it is an integral part of the product. That the original IBM PC lent itself to booting anything, legit OS or malware, it made no difference, is just an accident of history. If the company doesn't sell a machine as able to run anything other than the included OS it isn't reasonable to expect to be able to do otherwise. Just ask Apple.

I've enjoyed the Rayman series but if that is the great hope of your platform, you've got problems.

When you have family from and still in Kentucky, this is the what they've always thought of Maker's Mark and it rubs on you. Though these past 10 years or so they started to market the stuff and people started liking it but the drinkers in the family (ie everyone) still have a hate for it. I personally don't care for it, there are tons of better shit I'd rather drink

So, the JEF has CIA hit squads killing terrorists and selling arms to other terrorists that are then being used against our military. Brennan is in charge of it all, and the JEF is really, really disinterested.
And Brennan is not telling DoD any of it, or even Patraeus (the head of CIA). And Panetta finds out after the fact, more or less. Hillary, and State knew about it, and approved of the arms sales to terrorists.
And we are in Libya, which is a totally JEF operation. Some terrorists there are mad we are killing some of their buddies through Brennan's operations. They attack our consulate in Benghazi with arms we gave to other terrorists. And they kill our Ambassador because they are mad about the hit squad.
General Dempsey and Panetta know Stevens asked for extra security and didn't get it and they don't know why. But on Sept 11th, they brief the JEF that the embassy is burning and the Ambassador is missing. And they never talk to him again about it that day. And he never asks.
Cause he already knew through Brennan. And he and Brennan concoct a story about a video, and throw a man in jail, and lie to the American public, and to the greiving families of dead heroes. And Brennan gets his guys to out Petraeus' affair, cause they are afraid he will talk and they want him discredited.
And the press does not care. So the public does not care. Brennan will head the CIA, Hillary will be the next President, historians will write glowing appraisals of the JEF, Petraeus will be known only for an affair, the video maker is still in jail, and the families will be ignored.
Tell me this is not one of the most venal administrations in our history

I'll reserve criticism? Judgment? Snark? Whatever until the the 20th, when they're supposedly doing the big reveal.
Part of the problem is that the success of the Wii drove the industry insane and made them obsessed with alternative control methods. I'd rather have a really strong, relative to the era, base platform and a rich range of accessories for unconventional stuff, but it's very hard to get developers to commit to supporting stuff that isn't in the base platform. It effectively a separate platform with a smaller installed base.
I have to wonder if the heads of any of these companies have reflected on how few of the top selling Wii titles made significant use of the motion controls or could easily have had those parts of the game be optional.
There has been a lot of talk about the second generation Kinect being built-in rather than an add-on. Which is fine for those who have certainty about wanting it in their new console but rather a drag for those who want the most polygon pushing power they can get in a console.
I've no doubt there are guys at these companies having sleepless nights over what numbers and what features will produce the best compromise.

This is on top of having to take apart my bed and move some furniture in my room. I'm not entirely sure where I'm sleeping Wednesday night. I'll sleep in my car if that is what it takes to get though this. It's supposed to keep us a good bit cooler in summer, big win there compared to unknown cost of running the AC. Plus we're making a dog door in one of the walls so that can properly close the sliding glass door to put an end to a severe draft. The door was done wrong when the place was built in the mid-80s and gave a proper seal. The dog door only made it worse.

Yeah I went to school up on Holy Hill in Montecito. There were some sketchy places down off Milpas. I went to school with a lot of locals who claimed there was a gang problem, I never saw much of that. Never understood why the police where so on edge, most of the trouble like drugs and whores was off Haley street that's pretty much it.

The 20th is going to be really interesting especially if the Playstation will in fact end up being more powerful than the new Xbox. And with it supposedly being easier to dev for should make for a fun show.
As for MS, I always expected for them to slow the breaks on what was in the box as gaming was always a means to an end of them wanting to control the living room. I do hope they have in fact secured a deal to have it be a cable stb otherwise they stepped into the third console curse. As for Kinect, I'm a big fan of it myself. It's a pleasure to work with when it comes to getting to specific content quickly. That being said, Google has stepped up the usefulness and it working
just right that I hope that MS can steal that. It would lead credence to
the always online connection as it would have to be so it can build up
it's dictionary library. And for gaming it worked well for what was made that was actually possible to do with a Kinect. Some stuff just shouldn't have been made for it (looking at you Steel Battalion) and even one of my favorite gaming experiances of all-time, Child of Eden fell apart at the end of the game when using the Kinect. I hope the new Kinect is made with updated original specs (specs when it first leaked).

They always say crap like "three feet of clearance", but it's bunk. You could have your entertainment center within 18" if they have 4' of clearance on the other side and they won't even whinge -- just be sure to have it tarp'd.

XBMC wasn't an MS product. It was a hack on the original Xbox.
Microsoft could do a full implementation of Media Center to the 360 but how does this make them revenue? Offering a TV tuner as an add-on would be trivial. They could even support an external Cable Card box as they did on PCs, so you can use the premium channels on your cable system. (They've been doing IPTV deployment in partnership with some service providers but it still seems to be experimental in most markets.) But do they go into competition with TiVo and charge for a channel guide subscription? On the PC the idea was to drive sales of Windows licenses for HTPCs. On the console, which is sold at best on a break even basis in pursuit of lucrative software sales, the incentive isn't as clear cut.
And is this a good idea when the console cannot do DVR stuff and play games at the same time? Anything that keeps people from playing games, where the primary revenue comes in (the sales of the games really), is not a good thing. There is a reason most of the extended functions of the Xbox 360 beyond games require an Xbox Live Gold subscription.
This could change with the new machine to be launched this year. One feature that will almost certainly be included is sufficient dedicated resources to allow the machine to keep a download going while playing games or other activities. You shouldn't be punished by losing the use of your game console during a download. Not good for sales. The big games will also be structured, similar to Office 2013, to allow play to start long before the download is complete. Again, why should you have to wait to play because content that won't be used until you're at least ten hour in isn't transferred yet?
Those same same dedicated system resources will also be useful for DVR-ish functions, although recording broadcasts may still not be a factor. You should be able to tell Netflix or Hulu I want to want items X, Y, and Z tonight but meanwhile I'm going to play Halo 6 for a while. Rather than rely on uncertain streaming, the console should pull down a good chunk of each video in the background while you're playing so that any drops in your data service aren't likely to interrupt the playback.
A lot of people are going to be bothered by the idea that a significant chunk of the machine will never be used for making games better but that is the price for having a better overall product. An example of this is the Wii U. There is 2 GB of RAM in the box but game developers only have access to half of it. The other half is dedicated to the system to enable features like being able to pause a game and go into its forum to ask for help or the like. (Not something that excites me but it seems everything has to be SOCIAL these days.)

I'm in SoCal. Furnace filters aren't really a concern.
Thing is, even if the requested three feet is an exaggeration, the entertainment center is so close that the left edge of the 40" TV lines up almost directly with the window. So not moving it may be asking a bit much.
I may be able to get away with disconnecting the TV and leaving the rack it lives on and the gear on the lower shelves in place. So I'll definitely move only the TV for starters. Fortunately a modern screen doesn't weigh much. My last tube was ten inches smaller but far too heavy to safely move by myself.

Makes you wonder what they're doing. 1 GB for the Wii U? What the heck are they doing or plan to do that needs an entire gigabyte of RAM in a dedicated system. It isn't like there a bunch of unknown apps that might be hanging around in memory they have to plan for, as developers on a desktop OS have to do.
Five years form now I'd like to ask a Nintendo engineer, "Did you ever have a situation where you wanted to do something and that 1 GB just wasn't enough?" So when the rumor mill claims a dedicated 3 GB in the NextBox I really have to ask, for what?

Especially with with it being MS, OS stuff is their bread and butter. Even as bloated with the current OS on the 360, other than an occasional hitching, it runs pretty smoothly on just 512meg

My folks know of an older couple who after retirement learned how to sail and liked it. Quite a bit, in fact. Several times, they have sailed from the Great Lakes out to the Atlantic, down the coast all the way to the Caribbean. And back. In their late 60's, and just recently learned how to sail...doing shit like that. I could hardly believe it.

Well, there is the Windows Media Center Extender functionality. This can even be made to play formats the Xbox doesn't know how to play on its own. The lack of MKV support in both the Sony and MS consoles has been a big annoyance. Interestingly, Sony sells a box similar to a Roku for streaming services and files on USB drives and DLNA volumes, and it has perfectly good MKV support.
The big problem remains, where is the money in it? They've done the feature set they have for a reason. It was all stuff that was easily done in software without requiring any hardware that wasn't useful for the primary gaming function.
During the Xbox era Microsoft did a lot of surveys to see if people were interested in certain extended features for a game console. The first survey I got was for what became Media Center Extender but some later surveys asked about things that never became products. There was definitely discussion inside MS about how much further they could take the product but the bigger problem was always the business model rather than the technology.
To do a DVR worth a damn you need a dedicated encoder chip. That, along with the tuner is the baseline for what the product will cost. The most recent Intel CPUs have a dedicated transcoder that could likely also greatly improve encoding but it would probably be cheaper to have a dedicated encoder with a CPU better suited to a console's needs.There is a reason why MS didn't use Intel the second time around, although both companies are rumored to be using AMD for their next products. Those really efficient codecs are great for high quality small files but as anyone who has done transcoding knows, the encoding can bring a modern general purpose CPU to its knees.

Not really. As of the last time I turned mine on it was still painfully slow to go from one area to another in the firmware functions. Imagine what the 360 would be like if it took 15 seconds to get from the main game panel to the video apps panel. That bad.
The Wii U environment has the whizzy social stuff like pausing a game and going to its forum. You probably saw the early demo where a guy is playing a zombie game and stops to call up his friend and get his help. I don't think what they showed in that video is fully in the final ZombieU game but I've barely played it. But anyway, the Wii U social goodies can co-exist with a game so you can access them while pausing but not exiting a game, and that certainly requires a level of resources that would have been very demanding on earlier systems. But I guess I'm an awful sociopath who cannot grok the paradigm shift because I have no desire at all to pester others when I'm stuck in a game.

I'd like enough land where I wasn't doing Environmental Impact Reports if I wanted to do some anodizing [http://www.focuser.com/atm/anodize/anodize.html -- just try THAT in California!!!!!] or keeping bees, or putting up bat-houses, or building on another workshop. I'd like to have some greenhouses and some crops. I'd like to pull enough deadfall off the land to help heat the colder days, and maybe raise some chickens or something to help things along.

Maybe they're comparing to things like Blu-ray decks instead of other consoles or PCs. My LG BP-220 can pretty slow on a lot of stuff but it justifies its position in the rack due to its extensive codec and wrapper support. Except for unsupported codecs (FLAC and Ogg) and some bad implementations of the subtitle standard, it plays damn near everything. It makes the Xbox and PS3 look bad by comparison because it drives home how only a minor bit of software would be needed in either console to give comparable ability.
The BP-220 is a great buy at $60. (Best buy has had it for that price in their Deal of the Day several times. But I'd pay a bit more for a model that was a more responsive. Or I'd pay a reasonable price for a Xbox or PS3 version of VLC.
It's odd that the console divisions shun MKV because it is popular with file sharers but the same companies support it in their other division that make home video gear.

I sampled several metro areas for straight property taxes. I didn't do a total matrix over the state because I was looking at it in the context of other states. I had expected it to be much more competitive and was somewhat shocked by the results.

Not wishing death on anyone but Nintendo would be so much better off if Yamauchi passed away. If it wasn't for them owning 70% of the market in Japan due to the 3DS and striking the front loaded gold in the Wii, they would be irrelevant. Especially with the way that they seem to only care about Japan, which as a market is increasingly contracting with traditional consoles and handhelds. They had all that money and they didn't even seem to be interested in doing anything in the west which is currently THE market.

There's already Federal law against armor piercing ammo.
I don't know what they got planned, but any of the typical hunting rifle rounds will defeat a level 2 or level 2A vest (which is pretty common for cops). The level 1 "tee shirt" types some UC's wear are defeated by anything much stouter than a .32, they're strictly light weight and give up a lot for being non-obvious.
