Well he ain't no hypocrite. Imam Shahid Mehdi talked the talk:

"Women are not entitled to respect when they walk around without a Hijab. They are to blame for it when they are attacked," Imam Shahid Mehdi said.
"All the crimes that occur against women is because they are not covered. When they are not covered, you have no respect for them. "

And walked the walk...with his penis:

A 36-year-old Danish man is the protagonist in a bizarre sex case, which will soon be dealt with in court in MalmÃ¶.

Now, however, he is accused of pulling his penis out and chasing a 23-year-old woman around in a park in MalmÃ¶ in August 2012, according to the court in MalmÃ¶.

The woman managed to get away, and she called the police, who arrested the man a few minutes later.

Plus he may have bought an iphone and done a bit of coal mining which would put him into the Judd trifecta.

Oh and it turns out that when not demanding women wear hijabs Imam Mehdi also shares a common interest with Sir Roderick Spode as well.

For one thing, it doesn't make a fucking lick of sense. Life on another planet? Sure, that makes sense. But life embedded within a meteorite travelling through the vacuum of interstellar space? Nah. Ask yourself: where do meteors come from anyway? They're either detritus from the tails of comets (not exactly the ideal workshop for the Origin of Life), or asteroids, i.e. Moons/Planets That Didn't Make It. What they aren't is spontaneously-launched emissaries from other populated worlds. So how would this microscopic proto-bacterium have gotten into a piece of interstellar rock? Answer: unless it formed within that rock as it was a-zoomin' through the cosmos, it didn't.

My prediction is that it's either proven to be an earth-fossil (make no mistake, microscopic bacterium can bore into porous rock) or non-biological matter altogether.

The answer is that we got them because at some point long, long ago Mars was hit with a MASSIVE 'chip shot' by an asteroid (a big motherfucker on the order of the KT dinosaur-extinction event, not one of those small Tunguska ones) that glanced off the planet and spewed Martian debris out into space, some of which landed here.

Oh, I didn't get that you were referring to Mars. Well, I'm aware of that (see #116 above), and it's definitely a fair point. The answer is through a complex chemical analysis of the rocks, comparing them with information we've gotten from the various Mars landers and their analysis of the Martian terrain. And it's worth pointing out that the proposition that certain interstellar rocks found on Earth were actually from Mars was INTENSELY controversial and widely rejected for a very long time...until we were able to run comparisons between the proposed 'Martian' rocks found here on Earth with sample analysis from the Mars landers, and compare that to the chemical composition of other interstellar rocks. It's generally held that the 'match' is too close to be anything other than proof that some stuff here on Earth really does come from Mars.

175 Good evening. Oz The Great And Powerful? It was okay. A nice Disney family film. Cute. But it was fun, evoking that old timey feeling in some ways while being thoroughly modern in execution. James Franco clearly enjoys being the ham. Director Sam Raimi is basically slumming it but the visual presentation and art direction is most excellent. The *look* of Oz is most wonderful even if the story is by the numbers. Seen in 2D. Alas, the size of the 3D glasses has now shrunk to the point I cannot wear them properly over my own eyeglasses. Suck! And it was clear Raimi was trying to do things visually that would be appealing in 3D. Recommended for families or large-ish groups of friends looking for a simple night out.

Abe Vigoda, I'd miss....

Both ForTran and COBOL were heavily pushed by the DoD. The first ForTran compiler came out in '57 from an IBM plant just a few miles from here. COBOL was Admiral Grace Hopper's baby that dropped in 1960. Interestingly, many of today's more popular languages are offshoots from Algol (1960) that wasn't anywhere near as popular initially.

463 When I was working as the Controller for an industrial robot place, there was a group that had a very interesting project going on for industrial control applications. Essentially (IIRC), they'd have a little icon for a gizmo, and you'd have line for gizmo input and gizmo output, and you could tweak the parameters of the instance of the gizmo. So, for instance, you could have a prep station gizmo and an oven gizmo -- then move a pizza crust to the prep station, add sauce and cheese in the prep station's instance, put in the oven instance, ovenize for 7 minutes at 475 degrees, move back to the prep station, slice into eighths, and move to counter. It was a programming language of sorts that was primarily pictorial. A group in Hyderabad was making the guts work.

It's pathological -- every HR rep thinks they need "Ant" or "Hadoop" expert, when a basic knowledge of programming can be applied to just about anything. And 90% of stuff is written in the wrong language -- I was talking to some 3D printer guys and the software that moves the printhead is in Python....which is interpreted. Great move, guys -- put time-critical stuff on a time-whenever platform.

The underlying problem is that there is less attention spent toward using the proper tool (and accepting the tradeoffs from using a suboptimal tool) than getting one-time demonstration performance. If you can do a thing in VBA, Python, or C++, it's done in whichever is closest to the demo.....and that sucks.

Prototypes/Demos being morphed into shaky product has been a problem for *decades*. Marketing people and management don't understand the difference.

This is why the old OS/2 workplace shell sucked ass for several releases and wasn't really usable until Warp 4 (by which time it was too late). A single programmer, who shall remain anonymous to protect the guilty, whipped up a quick/dirty demo, Reiswig saw it, fell in love with it, and that crappy demo code that was rife with predictable design flaws one expects in a demo became the product due to scheduling pressure. In many ways, that WPS decision is what pushed Microsoft off the OS/2 bandwagon.

Most water handling in houses is ancient technology -- not a lot of quarter-turn ball valves, anywhere,

The valve I'm looking at has a threaded valve stem running down to a seal, wrapped in plastic-impregnated string. It only leaks when it's open -- meaning that it's the string and not the seal. Problem is, it didn't leak before....so I'm thinking that it doesn't like the flush valve.

My attitude is basically to do everything upstream "hard". Individual outlets, sinks, etc. can be whatever -- but I should be able to really shut them off with a ball valve. If you have to shut off the house water to do something, someone didn't lay it out properly in the first place.

DK, never played it. When shit is too slow, blame interpreters/scripts first, use of OOP languages second, and totally ignoring working set and cache locality issues third. Any one of them can produce a 10X slowdown. Combinations can produce 100X slowdowns.

Years ago there was an operating system, which shall remain nameless (but I'll call it OS/2), who's install program was so slow it couldn't keep the floppy drive spinning constantly during diskette reads on install.

The inactivity spindown and subsequent spin up of the FDD takes a LOT of time. Turned out the install program was doing several trips through the kernel to allocate then free a fixed size block of memory for every something or other it touched, and there were a LOT of them. This was all serial access, nothing in parallel. Simply allocating the block statically and not throwing it away and reallocating all the time sped the process up enough that the FDD's never quiesced and file reads rolled smoothly with the FDD spinning all the time.

That little couple line change in the install code knocked several minutes off the install time for the OS.

502 The last IBM supported release of OS/2 was ~11 years ago (Warp 4.52). It was subsequently handed off to Serenity Systems who rebranded it as e-ComStation and continued development work.

I think there's a new Serenity e-Com release due out in a month or two.

I just loaded 4.52 on an old Pentium Pro machine with 192M and its pretty snappy. The stock browsers are pretty dated though (ex. Gekko blows up trying to load ace.mu.nu). NS Navigator loads AOS, but the rendering blows dogs and JS support isn't up to the task though).

I'm gonna try and load the OS/2 FireFox 10and see how that goes. They claim it needs a Ghz CPU and 256M, but that's probably bullshit.

Probably OLED TV's printed on flexible plastic backers that could fill a wall and ship in a cardboard tube. I've seen the OLED prototype flex material demos. The big problem was longevity. The OLED's from a few years ago wore out very quickly (like minutes, not years). Get that beat and the stuff would be on the market very quickly.
