Some names are mostly just fads - their popularity quickly rises and just as quickly falls. But then there are other names that are steadily growing until something (or someone) drives their popularity into the ground i.e. poisons them. And in fact Hilary seems to become the most poisoned name ever.
"Hilary", though, was clearly different than these flash-in-the-pan names. The name was growing in popularity (albeit not monotonically) for years. So to remove all of the fad names from the list, I chose only the names that were in the top 1000 for over 20 years, and updated the graph (note that I changed the range on the y-axis).
I think it's pretty safe to say that, among the names that were once stable and then had a sudden drop, "Hilary" is clearly the most poisoned.
I can attest to this. Long before I ever heard of the Clintons I always thought Hilary was great girl's name that was uncommon but nice-sounding. Then 1992 happened and I scratched it off my list - permanently. Maybe in 100 years or so it'll get another shot.
Also I predict a glut of strippers named Ashanti in about ten years.
And apparently some Saturn fanboys were unhappy with all the Mars-love, so here's the surface of Titan. Looks like the Gobi desert to me.
An Interesting Theory About Obama's Birth Certificate
From a Bookworm reader:
I worked in adoptions social work in both Maryland and Tennessee between 1964 and 1967. During that period, at the time of a child's adoption, both states pulled the original birth certificate, sealed it, and issued a new birth certificate with all the data the same, but substituting the adoptive parent(s)'s name and the adopted child's new name for the originals. All other birth records were also sealed. If Hawaii followed the same practice, this would have happened at the time of Obama's adoption by the Indonesian step-father. There literally would be no original birth certificate available without all parties' permission.
...I have long assumed that the available birth certificate for Obama is in his adoptive father's name, and since that didn't fit the narrative of his public persona, he wouldn't sign for its release and he produced that computer generated phony when things got too hot.
I've never been a Birther but I guess I am a sorta a birther in that I've always assumed that Obama was born in HI but there was something on his birth certificate that was embarrassing and/or didn't fit his narrative and that was why he acted so squirrely about it. The adoption theory actually would fit all the known facts.
Your Phone is Not at Wayne Dobson's House
There's a bug in Sprint's Find My Phone system in North Las Vegas that always says your phone is at his house - it's not.
If a cellphone GPS system can't get a specific read on a device, the system will return a general location. For Sprint users in North Las Vegas, the general location returned is the home of Wayne Dobson, and over the last couple years, several people have knocked on his door looking for their phone with the Find My Phone feature. These situations are generally diffused when Dobson calls the police, and he's even invited people in to wait for the police to show up.
The Key to Fluency in a Language: Learning 10,000 Words
Well learning 10,000 words in a single year is probably too ambitious for most people but I do think there's something magical about mastering 6 to 10K words in a language.
It's enough to let you get the gist of most conversations and articles and begin adding new vocabulary from context. Plus it's usually sufficient to let you communicate whatever you need to even if it's in caveman-speak. Even knowing just the top 1000 most common words in language and a bit of pantomiming is often enough to get by even if no one speaks English.
There's a lot of bits of childhood culture and entertainment that we forget about as we get older:
Lying in bed at night, waiting for sleep to overtake me, an entertaining feature was to press gently on my eyes with my fists and rub, causing the activation of phosphenes and a bit of a light show (the Greeks had described the phenomenon long before my time, but I was unaware of that and thought I'd invented the activity on my own).
Then there was the repetition of a familiar word until it became strange. This was accomplished by simply saying it aloud over and over to the point where it was leached of its original meaning and devolved to a mere sound. I recall this happening most effectively and dramatically with the word "pink," but others will do quite nicely.
One of my favorites was simply to spin around until I was so dizzy I couldn't even get up. Or clapping my hands together until they started getting numb and it felt like I was touching a force field.
Registration for Precious Metals?
Illinois wants gold control as well as gun control:
While passed in the Illinois Senate last year, and moth-balled in the House since, Rick notes that "the long and short of it is is they want an audit trail to any precious metals, whether you're talking coins or bullion." It does not seem too much of a stretch to this Chicagoan to the 1933 Executive Order #6102 that confiscated gold and cleared the way eventually for Nixon's 1971 disconnect of the dollar from gold. As Liberty Blitzkrieg's Mike Krieger notes: "So let me get this straight. First they want gun registration and now precious metal registration? I'm sure the government would only use such information in our best interests, because as we all know: Your Government Loves You. Sounds reasonable, after all, only 'terrorists' buy guns and gold anyway."

I knew there were a lot of German immigrants to Texas but I didn't realize they had their own dialect known as Texas German:
As the obscure dialect of Texas German nears extinction, an entire culture and way of life that deeply shaped Texas is about to disappear.A century ago, more than 100,000 people in a large swathe of south central Texas spoke the dialect. To the uninitiated, it sounds like a strange mishmash of English and German.
Today, perhaps 8,000 people can speak it, the youngest of whom are in their 60s, according to Hans Boas, a University of Texas at Austin professor who studies Texas German. Few have passed it on to their children and grandchildren, so the dialect is now impossible to save, Boas said.

I don't think you will ever see Obama do this. Because I suspect such a test would show he is not in fact of East African lineage. His actual bloodline is West African, and it comes through Frank Marshall Davis. Obama Sr. was merely a convenient beard to disguise the Davis connection.
That would explain, inter alia, why Obama treats his Kenyan kin with such distant contempt, refusing even to drop his impoverished half-brother a few bucks, and dropping his illegal-alien aunt and drunk-driving uncle into the US welfare system without giving them a dime. They really aren't his blood kin at all, and he has known it from a pretty early age.

If you can function at a high level with whatever level of consumption you enjoy, then you are not an alcoholic.

In Cincinnati at the turn of the 20th Century, there were so many Germans, that it was taught in public schools. That ended during WW1.
And the northern suburb of Canton, Ohio was called New Berlin, until WWI, when it then became "North Canton".

We talked about the adoption angle a LONG time ago.... but its deeper...
When adopted, his NAME changed... and to change it back there needs to be Court Approved Name Change documents... which there do not seem to be...
So... no Birth Cert with the name he used, when he needed a Social Security number.... so Grandma, who worked in a place where they saw death records... found him one... which explains how he uses a Social Sec number for a guy from another State, who died in Hawaii...
But hey.... its all just Birther nonsense... nothing to see here... move along....

I've read articles that say something (now don't hold me to this because it's been awhile since I read about it) that Obama has type A blood (As noted on a British media outlet because the secret service carries spare blood for him whenever he travels) and the vast majority of the Luo tribe are type O, with Obama's type being quite rare among them.
Don't know, but it's interesting speculation.

Yes, I'm of German ancestry. The nick is not my real name.
My mother's grandparents were German farmers from up around Van Wert County and Lima. My father's grandparents were from Western Maryland (Frostburg) and crazy German tinkerers and merchants (very small time) from Dayton. My father's father and his brothers came to Dayton after WWI looking for factory jobs and leaving the farm in the hills of Western Maryland.
We stayed at a motel in Western Maryland (Cumberland) a couple of times on the way to the Outer Banks when my kids were small, and there were people working there with my last name. Distant cousins, no doubt, as the name is not terribly common, but it was there.

When considering O's birth cert keep two things in mind:
Yes he is almost certainly hiding something. But the 2nd Birther was a HRC supporter and HRC never, ever used this weapon. The 1st Birther was of course Obama himself, who peddled the foreign born origin story to sell his book then buried it when he started growing ambitions beyond Senator.
It doesn't matter. They pushed the issue just to make it toxic to ask any question in that area. And the big one doesn't need any documents other than Obama's own danged book. He wasn't and isn't qualified to hold the office by his own preferred creation myth.
1. BHO Sr. was not a US Citizen and never even contemplated becoming one.
2. BHO Jr. was legally adopted by an Indonesian.
3. The Natural Born Citizen clause in the requirements for POTUS appears nowhere else in the document; Therefore it must mean something. If the term 'natural born' can encompass a guy with legal claim on British, Kenyan, Indonesian and American citizenship then it is a nullity.
The only way around point #1 is if Stanley Ann wasn't actually married, not sure but I think being a bastard would get around the father's lack of citizenship. Or if BHO Sr. ain't the babydaddy. But that still leaves the second problem.
Let us stick to that dead simple reasoning, not that it really matters anymore since he is safely reelected.

The point is moot now, but there was a time when some help might have yielded great benefits. If a single state had passed a law requiring real proof of US Citizenship birth, it might have derailed the entire Obama re-election.
Arizona did it, but their asshole governor vetoed it. Oklahoma (and other states) almost did it, but more or less killed it by committee.
This was one of those things that wouldn't have hurt us, and might actually have won the battle. (Against Obama's re-election.)

I too was adopted, and I have an original birth certificate with one name, and I have another "Official" birth certificate with my current name. For the last four years i've been trying to explain that lying on birth certificates is routine for all state governments. There are 75,000 false birth certificates issued every year. (75,000 adoptions.)
There is about seven pieces of evidence that Obama was adopted by Lolo Soetoro. Of COURSE there is something funky about his Hawaiian docs, the original is sealed by court order. ( Which is SOP for adoptions.)

It was rumored their father was a German mercenary for the British during the Revolutionary War, and stayed behind (in the United States) because he had nothing to go back to in what were the old duchies and principalities before Germany was united by von Bismarck
Two different great great Grandfathers fought in the Civil War, marching south with Don Carlos Buell.
My mother's father was a WWI combat veteran, enlisted in the Army in 1915 when he was 18 years old. Served at the border during the Mexican crisis under Major Patton. His son, (my uncle) got to tour Europe with the 3rd Army in 1944-45, and by then Patton had gotten a promotion.

Adoption paper trails are sealed by court order. They can't always get everything. Much speculation has been made regarding Obama's Connecticut issued Social Security number. One commenter has speculated that the agency which dealt with repatriating Minor Americans was headquartered in Connecticut. My personal theory on most things regarding our gov't is that they all have dirt on each other, and thus the discussions that should happen don't because they blackmail each other. The fact that all the GOP, the SCOTUS and all of Congress avoided the birth certificate/natural citizen subject makes me think they're all complicit. What motive did they ALL have to suppress the truth? I don't know.
I'm truly shocked that by now somebody, somewhere hasn't leaked. As I mentioned above, there is a shit-ton of documents that have your name on it. And literally thousands of people at many different companies and agencies, from IT people to clerks to CEOs would have had access to computer systems with info on O. Somebody wiped his history clean and has managed to keep a lid on the truth. This means the alpha agencies all know the truth to and are part of the conspiracy.

I have always been open minded on the issue. I've pondered about three or four theories at the same time, never ruling any out until evidence came forth which made them impossible or implausible.
At this point, I think Obama could very well have been born in Hawaii in exactly the manner his book says, or he could have been born in Washington State (Hawaii will issue a birth certificate to the child of any resident, regardless of where born.) or Obama could have been born in Canada.
For whatever reason, he has not been forthcoming with his birth documents.

I don't regard that as complex at all. The Democrats wanted to win, and they don't care about citizenship issues, especially if it hurts their guy. The Republicans didn't want to be perceived as pulling a sore loser Dirty trick on the "black" guy because they saw it as a no-win political situation.

I've been researching this for quite awhile, and you are essentially correct. The Naturalization of any woman who marries an American citizen was codified into law in 1845.( if I remember correctly.) Regarding American women who married foreign citizens, they were considered foreign citizens until the Cable act of 1924, and their claim on citizenship was further strengthened by the Women's citizenship act of 1934.

Its possibly a problem with the connections for the lights then. I had a problem with the turn signal light on my car always going out. Eventually replaced the socket for the bulbs and it stopped destroying them. So perhaps you should look into finding a replacement part for as far back as possible and see if that fixes it.

I saw a 1936 MG TB at the local CVS last summer. Nice museum piece.
The Morgan Plus 4 is a favorite of the well heeled academics. I think they get driven maybe once or twice a year. It's kind of the coffee table book of cars, just there to impress other intellectuals

I had a buddy who could get a BSA running, with a headlight, with a pre-measured three feet of wire. Most people can't even claim the main clause, there.
The most mystical British motorcycle part was the Zener diode, doing the job of a voltage regulator on a good day, and that of a fusible link and corn-popper element on a bad one. They worked perfectly (like so many things) only in total isolation. We always presumed it was arrived at in a high stone tower somewhere with lightning striking, and Barnes Wallis looking on. I finally looked 'er up. Clarence Zener was from Indianapolis.

Guten tag, y'all! For the edification of all the 'rons and 'ronettes who have hung on this thread, I will supply a brief dissertation about the Hill Country/Texas German settlers, and the short life of the Mainzer Adelsverein - or the Society of Noblemen of Mainz. In the early 1840s a consortium of philanthropic German noblemen wanted to do good and possibly make a little profit by taking up an entrepeneur grant in then-independent Texas and transporting a large number of farmers and craftsmen to it. (Industrialization was biting those craftsmen hard, and the lack of land was also biting small farmers.) They contributed funds, advertized widely across Germany, made all kinds of promises to give each settler or family a quantity of land, a house, supplies and support for a year until they could bring in a crop, chartered ships, and brought over 7,000 new settlers to Texas over the course of two years. The Adelsverein established several towns - New Braunfels and Fredericksburg in the Hill Country, and Indianola on the Gulf coast, with an eye towards feeding their settlers into their grant ... which, oops! Turned out to be between the San Saba and Llano rivers, two hundred miles beyond the frontier, AND in Comanche hunting grounds. (Other towns like Comfort, Sisterdale, Bettina and Boerne were settled later by the Germans).
However, the Adelsverein way underestimated the costs of supplying all the things they had promised, and went broke ... essentially leaving all the settlers they had brought over to look for themselves. Fortunately, the second Adelsverein commissioner in Texas, one Baron von Meusebach, was a sensible and able man, who mitigated some (but not all) of the disaster and mismanagement. He negotiated a peace treaty with the Southern Comanche, which gave the Adelsverein a breathing space of about fifteen years - otherwise, they very likely would have been wiped out. As it was, a substantial number of them died in epidemics of disease, in transit. The trail between the coast and New Braunfels was pretty much a death march.Those settlers who came under Adelsverein auspices, and a number of intellectuals sympathetic to them provided a great deal of human talent to a frontier pretty well lacking it; doctors, scientists, mercantilists, teachers, technicians and engineers. A lot of businesses in San Antonio were established by those settlers, including the local newspaper, the Pioneer flour mills - and the Menger Hotel. They also were largely Unionists and abolitionists during the Civil War, which added a whole new dimension to the Texas home front. (look up the Nueces Fight and the Comfort True To The Union Monument.)
They've remained pretty cohesive over the years, even now. I've talked to many descendents of Adelsverein settlers in the course of doing book and history talks. It's a fantastic story, all in all. According to some of the older people I've met, their families made a decision round about 1920 to start speaking English in the home, not German - residual bad feeling after WWI. By that time, of course, they had been settled in Texas for at least seventy years. I've been told that it was illegal to speak German in public during WWII.
And yes, conjunto music was the fusion resulting from Czech and German polka and folk music meeting up with local Mexican musicians.
