Since I'm currently traveling to Florida tonight's ONT will be a movie night. This evening's feature presentation is Zulu (1964) starring Michael Caine in his first major movie role.
It recounts the Battle of Rorke's Drift which took place on Jan. 22 1879 in what is now South Africa. A Zulu army had just destroyed a British column of several thousand men and now the only force left defending British territory was a small garrison at Rorke's Drift led by two lieutenants. Consisting of just 150 men, some of them wounded, they made hasty defenses and over the course of 12 hours managed to fight off repeated attacks by over 4,000 Zulu warriors.
By dawn nearly every British soldier was wounded and they were down to their last rounds of ammunition - but the Zulus had retreated back into Zululand leaving hundreds of their dead. 11 Victoria Crosses were awarded to the defenders of Rorke's Drift, the most ever given out to a regiment in a single battle.
I had seen bits of this movie over the years but only saw the full thing a few months ago and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. I can see why it made Michael Caine a star. Some of the attacks and deaths seem quick and gore-less by today's standards but overall the movie is well done and slowly builds up the tension until the final battle. And yes it has some boobehs in it. It took a few liberties with historical details (often portraying men as worse than they were) but still remained true to the actual history of the battle and gave the Zulu impi their due.
The Zulu warriors of the time were fierce, disciplined, able to march up to 50 miles at a time, and had good leaders; They were probably the most formidable native army the British ever faced. The battle of Rorke's Drift was cited by Victor Davis Hanson in his book, Carnage and Culture, as a landmark battle demonstrating the superiority of Western military tactics - in particular disciplined group defenses and volleys of aimed fire - over all other existing military traditions of the time.

The problem is that the national GOP uses the old style negotiation where you start in good faith, and starting too extreme is in bad faith.
This hit me when someone was talking about how to negotiate with a union. They will always start with an extreme position, and work from there. He mentioned that you could start near what you thought was a good end point and "stand on that" in his words, but he said that would make the union angry.
This is exactly how the democrats negotiate.

One avenue of attack might be all the zero-tolerance insanity going on in schools. I think even the LIV understands that its fundamentally stupid to expel a kid for having an aspirin or drawing a stick figure that some douchenozzle deems terroristic or threatening.
Its an easy albatross to hang around the left's neck.
You really only need one really really good wedge. Once people start to say "hey, wait a minute, that's fucking retarded", the people who foisted off that retardation on everyone will start to loose cred.

Even the E10 has been fucking up small engines for years. We have a cabin so the equipment gets used sporadically. Never had an issue with a lot of theses small engines till thy put the ethanol in the fuel. Ethenol is hygroscopic which can be a benefit in certain applications (Heet). But for fuel systems that sit it pulls in water over time and fucks up needles and seats and generally goes bad as a fuel.

Easily one of the most annoying commercials ever aired. And what is that horrible song they play at the end? Sounds like one of those execreble 90s feminist bands.
OTOH, I actually like the Chase Freedom Card "Footloose" spoof. I always prefer an ad that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Like all journalists he loved to act all worldly and cynical, but when you come right down to it he was a stoner with poor impulse control and very limited education. A natural-born Obama supporter.
All true, but not complete. Thompson occasionally wished for a tyrant, and Obama might have filled the bill perfectly. I don't remember the context, but I do remember Thompson yearning for "a high-powered shark with a fistful of answers".
On the other hand, his cantankerous nature might have led him not to accept Obama as this savior. But like so many of the left, he had this perfect-daddy-dictator-wish.

Robert- re: your mom and the stars, have you ever heard James McMurtry's "Levelland"?
Mama used to roll her hair
Back before the central air
We'd sit outside and watch the stars at night
She tell me to make a wish
I'd wish we both could fly
I don't think she's seen the sky
Since we got the satellite dish

A bird dropped a fish on the Nats during spring training last week, frightening CF Denard Span. Based on what Span said about the incident, I'm thinking the world did not lose a rocket scientist when he decided to become a baseball player:
"That’s another reason why I was kind of squealing a little bit,” he explained to The Post’s Brad Horn. “I kept thinking, that’s his dinner. That’s his food. As I was looking down at the fish, I didn’t want him to think that I was trying to take his dinner and have the bird come from behind me or come from the sky and try to attack me. I kept my head on a swivel and made sure the bird didn’t catch me slipping.”
“I’ve never seen that on a baseball field,” Span said. “I’ve seen it on T.V., you know, bird carrying their dinner. I’ll tell you what, that bird definitely didn’t have good hands. He dropped his dinner.” “I’m from Florida, but I’ve been fishing maybe twice in my life, he said. “I’m scared of fish, scared of birds. The only thing I’m not scared of is probably, like, an ant or something like that. I don’t know what it is. I don’t like to get my hands dirty, other than clay and dirt.”
"I'm scared of fish, scared of birds????" Who the hell is scared of fish?
If he's afraid of fish and birds, he'll really be pissing himself when the Nats play the Marlins and the Cardinals.

Reading the Internet ruined that movie for me. I saw it, I liked it, heroism, tests of manhood, cool machines, stuff blowed up, a sort of vaguely unconvincing romance but who cares if you're a guy watching a movie and the chick is really hot.
Haven't seen it since, but if I saw it now, I worry that all I'd see is lesbians and gays pretending to like eachother, and some sort of homo volleyball game I didn't notice the first time around.

There used to be an expression "Shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in 3 generations," which described a cycle in American life which is more common than people realize. The founder of a successful business would work his way up from nothing to riches, but would still live modestly and retain the values which made him successful. But he wanted his children to have all the advantages and luxuries he had not had as a kid - so they got the expensive private education, trips to Europe, a new sports car for their 16th birthday, etc. And, as a result, they learned how to spend, but not how to create wealth. The children of the founder might be able to skate by on trust fund, but their own children would end up squandering all the family moola and would find themselves poor - or at least not rich. I recall that the authors of "The Millionaire Next Door" repeatedly made the point that, contrary to Marxist theory, wealth in the US is fluid - people make fortunes and also lose them.
They were talking about individuals, but we're seeing it happen to the country as a whole.

Near the end of "Zulu", the remaining British soldiers (from Wales) are singing "Men of Harlech" to boost their spirits.
Rick Rescorla, was born in Cornwall (west Wales) and would sing songs like that in times of stress to boost moral.
It was probably very likely that Rescorla was singing "Men of Harlech" over his bullhorn in the WTC on Sept 11, to keep people moving down the stairs.
Rescorla had a lot in common with the men of Roark's Drift.
Piers Morgan, not so much.

I can't remember exactly what he said - he defended the troops or praised capitalism or something. You know, one of those shocking, disgusting beliefs that no good Hollywood actor should hold.
I remember a Neil Jordan movie he was in a while back (can't think of the name, and am too lazy to google for it). In fact, the only reason I remember the movie was his performance - he played a London pimp and was great as a cold, evil villian.

In the original cut of the movie the aliens were threatening the West Coast with a massive tidal wave. They dropped the subplot because the SFX for it came out awful. So as Cameron originally wrote it, Biehn's character had a good reason beyond crazy to nuke the aliens. The final cut was very unkind to that character.

Zulu is one of my all time favorites! Great film, even though as I have grown older I have realized that Attenborough slipped a lot of his left wing Weltanshaung into the film. To wit, the officer of Engineers (Chard) was actually from an aristocratic family, while the Caine character was from a more middle class background. One supposses the characters were flipped to support the more socially aware conclusion that the aristocracy were a bunch of toffs who only owed their positions to heredity. Some other poster has already commented on the fact that Clour Sergeant Bourne was not quite as grizzled a veteran as portrayed in the film. I also believe that the character of Pvt. Hook was portrayed as some sort of gallow's rat, when in reality he was a much more typical sort of soldier. I believe that some of his decendants actually sued for defamation due to Attenborouh's portrayal of him.
Still, it is definitely a cracking good Victorian period piece, and I really can't imagine such a film being made today (i.e. the European Imperials as the good guys).

There is some crap auto parts stores have you can dump in the radiator that will swell up the seal and make it seal better...*temporarily*.

It's the same story throughout recorded history -- and VDH does a good job documenting it. Good guys are tending their fuckin' farms. Bad guys are looking to government to help seize them.
Good guys, when successful with their own "farm", expand it by buying up the less successful "farms" of their neighbors and remaking them as successful ones. Bad guys bleed out the "farm" they seize and look to seize a more successful one to continue their looting.
Good guys turn failure into success by repurposing. Bad guys turn success into personal gain through looting.

We saw the Abyss in such a screening and the shot of the underwater alien city/mothership was instead a painting with Jim's name plainly visible. Our group of about a dozen started cheering wildly at that point and baffled the living shit out of the studio execs observing the screening.
Whenever it was a fantasy or SF movie the fannish community tended to be severely overrepresented and really skewed things when they bothered to do surveys. When they screened Star Trek V (as if they were actually going to do anything based on audience response) I noted that I recognized every face in the theater and could put names to about a third of them. So, an effective sample of the movie going public.
When the movie ended and the lights came up, they handed out surveys and pencils. We started talking amongst ourselves, seeking the right words to express the problems with the movie. A fanboy in the row ahead of us turned around and demanded to know, "You aren't going to write anything bad, are you?" Which is why it seemed so odd that they bothered to have a screening.

and the tree-hugging moralizing was way over the top.
Avatar allowed Cameron to go all in with his liberal bullshit. You can see that he sort of wanted to do this with Titanic as well, but he was partially held back in that he wanted it to be a story happening during a historical event. So he couldn't show all the rich upperclass passengers as selfish greedy assholes only concerned with themselves because that's not what the accounts portrayed as having happened.

Eastwood would have been all wrong for Wolverine as he is the opposite physical type, being tall and lanky. OTOH, Judge Dredd was modeled on him from its beginning in 2000 A.D.
At the right age Eastwood could also have been Jonah Hex. In a lot of ways 'The Outlaw Josey Wales' was a Jonah Hex movie.

'Call Me Joe' by Poul Anderson. As a lifelong SF geek there is simply no way Cameron wasn't familiar with that book. He could have thrown a million bucks at Karin Anderson for the rights, just from the change under his couch cushions. But that would mean admitting it wasn't his original concept.

He at least paid him the compliment of acknowledging the inspiration. It was Lucas and Spielberg who presented Kurosawa with his lifetime achievement Oscar.

This is a big difference from refusing to acknowledge your sources, especially when you're extremely wealthy while the source's widow is in near poverty.

They have a competition on TV where the candidates compete and call it Vatican Idol.
The audition episodes are always the best. I particularly like all the lapsed Catholics that just want to get on TV.

I say we combine the Vatican Idol and WWF themes. Paul Orndorff piledrives you when you get voted out.

Another character to read up on was Cecile Rhodes, and I think there is a movie about him but I can only recall fragments of the early history prior to or around the time of the discovery of the Kimberly diamond fields.
It is interesting to read modern comments from liberals who reject the history of that time refusing to even study it because of the racism.

Of course, both books were written in the 1960's when the times were quite different.

NEW YORK (AP) — The reporter for Mother Jones magazine who broke the story of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's remarks that 47 percent of Americans "believe they are victims" is among the winners of the 64th annual George Polk Awards in Journalism.
David Corn, Mother Jones' Washington bureau chief, received the political reporting prize for his work, which shook up the campaign when he reported on the remarks in September.
What a surprise.

Isandlwana and Roarke's Drift were battles in the Zulu War or 1879, not the Boer War of 1899-1902. In the first the British Empire fought against the Zulu Kingdom, with the Afrikaaners helping out the Brits. In the Boer War, it was the Brits fighting to annex the remaining Afrikaaners into the British Empire.
For a good movie regarding the latter conflict, I recommend "Breaker Morant", with Edward Woodward (the Equalizer, for those old enough to remember that one) in the title role.

The scene where the Welsh sing "Men of Harlech" while the Zulus are giving their shield bashing, foot-stomping war chant is one of those scenes that make the hairs on my neck stand up no matter how many times I watch that film.
Unfortunately, as I have come to find out over the years, it never actually happened. The 24 Regiment of Foot which fought at Rorkes drift was not a Welsh regiment either. Most of the soldiers in the first battalion were from the English industrial Midlands, while the second battalion did have a number of Welshmen in it, it was not by any means an exclusively Welsh regiment.
The Zulus also did not salute the British defenders and then march off into the sunset. A relief column from the main British force was headed towards Rorke's Drift, which the Zulus saw and hauled ass.
In spite of all the historical innaccuracies, and in spite of Attenborough's insertion of 1960's British class consciousness into a Victorian era context, I still regard the film as one of my all time favorites.
