Apparently Rape Culture is Alive and Well
Since somebody added a comment on to a single anti-rape poster. Oh the humanity!!
A flyer for a New School University screening of the new Jennifer Baumgardner documentary "It Was Rape," which chronicles eight women's experiences of being raped, was defaced by someone on the New School's campus. The flyer - which was defaced with the phrase "And It Felt Great" - was spotted by a student in one of the campus buildings, taken down and then handed over to the school's wellness center. That's where it was then passed on to Rhiannon Auriemma, a graduate student at the university and a peer health advocate at the school's Student Health Services.
Auriemma has a degree in Women's Studies and works on the university's Yes Means Yes campaign, which aims to engage student voices around sexual assault while educating the New School community around issues of rape culture and sexual violence. She believes the flyer incident needs to be examined in the greater context of rape culture. And though it may, on its face, seem like a small agression, as Auriemma explains it, "Because we are socialized within a culture that excuses and, at time, supports, gender based and sexual violence, micro-aggressions such as the defacing of the It Was Rape flyer take place." And, she notes, we need to be vigilant - even in places and within institutions that we presume to be safe spaces. "While The New School is a liberal institution that attempts to subvert larger, structural oppressions, we are not exempt from the reality of these oppressions," she said.
What's also alive and well is the utter humorlessness and clueless self-seriousness of the Women's Studies culture.

So today I found out one of my cousins has a fear of cotton balls. Like had a scratch on her nose and started crying when her friend came at her with a cotton ball with peroxide fear. Like her brothers would torment her by putting cotton balls in her shoes. They would have to be the ones to take it out.
So just out of curiousity I look up if it has a phobia name and it does. So I go to show her my phone as this site: http://tinyurl.com/ba6f6xb And when I turned it to her it hadn't finished loading so I didn't see the picture at the top, but she did and recoiled like I was putting a spider in front of her. Now that Mrs. Muldoon has gone to bed I can tell a funny story about her. In nursing school she was learning about how to report out the microscope findings on a urinalysis. If bacteria or other microorganisms were seen, they were to be counted, and if beyond a certain range were to be designated as TNTC (too numerous to count).
She dutifully recorded in a patient's chart the following:
"Orgasms- TNTC "
We were married shortly thereafter.

leftists tend to be people who think in the present
rightists tend to be people who think in the future
so leftists are people who tend to focus only on current material needs and dismiss any concern about moral hazard or looming debt crises in the future
but rightists are concerned about the long-term concerns, and so that is why they get a bad rap in a culture that is also mostly short-term oriented.

Yeah, so Yglesias' brilliant point is that in some time in the past, the British, when they were the world's empire, issued "consols" which were basically bonds with no maturity date. People would buy them and then just collect the interest forever, because apparently there was never any doubt that the government wouldn't be around to default on its debt. So Yglesias thinks we should do the same thing.
Tell Ygleisas to put his entire savings into these things, or STFU.

Yeah- my wife's father was murdered a few years ago. The likely culprit still hangs around the vicinity. There's no way I would give up my right to defend my self and my family. Just wouldn't be prudent. The scumbag was a convicted felon who had no problems with possessing a gun illegally. I often wonder what might have happened if my F-I-L had been armed that day. Might not have made a difference, but then again.

@156 As far as Obama being rated one of the greatest by idiots--- depends on how the economy goes. Of course, the media will continue to work mightily to see that no one notices if we end up with hyperinflation or a depression. Some on the left dream of revolution, if so let's hope the MSM are the first loaded into the tumbrils.
I think the media are the truly soulless unprincipled ones. You can't blame politicians for being power mad. But the mainstream media are the enablers. They now comfort and protect the powerful and afflict the powerless. We're living in an alternate bizarro universe.

35 or so years ago, I girl I knew very well was raped one Sunday afternoon walking from the college library to her car. It messed her up in the head for several years.
Another girl I knew (well, +30 year old woman) was raped in her own house, when she came home some stalker was waiting for her.
Guns aren't for everyone, but if a woman was at risk, they should have the right to carry. Rape is ugly and cruel, and no real man would ever do something like that. You would have every right to plug that unspeakable scum dead if you felt threatened.

I'd always been weary of the militant feminists. The definitive BING moment for me overall was early in college. Had to go to <pick your lib topic for sensitivity> special guest speaker events twice for Ethnic Studies 101. I picked the feminist speakers because they seemed the least objectionable overall. They had a couple of the modern leaders of the movement up there, but I can't recall now which ones. My first one they talked about the middle east stuff. Basically how things weren't perfect in America, but focus needed to shift abroad to the developing world too, and they talked a lot about the middle east and clitoral circumcision. Then 9/11 happened. The event afterwords, I saw people get kicked out for asking about and quoting the same ladies' earlier statements.

This. The fundamental thing about narcissists is that they are faking having a personality. There's a lot they don't know about what it's like to really have one.
What is scary is how well his narcissist "mask" has worked to get him where he is, and to get him so much success in his socialist dictator project. Like everything else American that has been perverted and ruined by the left, it may be coming to an end soon. Government uses student loans and other taxpayer funded means to finance the poisoning of young minds by tenured losers; after graduating with a worthless degree, many vote Democrat and want student loans forgiven, again financed by productive people. Same old same old. But the weaknesses of that model are becoming evident despite the efforts of the MFM. Let it burn.

Some presumably well-intentioned group placed ads in the box frames above the urinals in campus bathrooms.
The ad read something along the lines of, "The power to stop rape is in your hands."
Yes, they were accusing you of being a rapist, or a potential rapist. It sucks, and it happens all the time, with this sort of propaganda. It's damned insulting, and it reflects the fundamental idiocy of the left. Everyone with a male organ is a potential rapist, and everyone who's armed is a potential murderer. Because singling out actual criminals, and the characteristics that lead to criminality (hint to the left: that envy you seek to stoke is one of them), is judgmental, you know.

Or you look for someone who did it before that surface was made vertical. Like whoever put it up. Because hey, look at that--why is it rolled like somebody was sneakin' it around at the bottom of a pile of rolled things? Well, maybe it was just at the bottom of the rolled pile of them and then later it got written on...so lightly that the pressure of writing--that big hot wet rapin' hand slowly sliding across it--didn't visibly change how rolled it is on that side. For whatever reason.
Point: maybe wait before deciding exactly what kind of people-you-already-hate need to all go to all the hells for not having done this arguably annoying thing which may be a different thing than you want to think it is. Or not.

There are a lot of things going on. Has anyone else been noticing that the statute of limitations for financial crimes leading up to the 2008 collapse runs out in Obama's second term? I have a sneaky suspicion that's a big reason why 2012 went the way it did.

I'll give you a hint -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bourgeoise -- "Historically, the mediæval French word bourgeois denoted the inhabitants of the bourgs (walled market-towns), the craftsmen, artisans, merchants, and others, who constituted "the bourgeoisie", they were the socio-economic class between the peasants and the landlords, between the workers and the owners of the means of production." In other words, people who own and run a business.

If its static information with no interaction with a backend server, e-commerce shit, etc than you can even do it with MS Word and tell it to save the files as HTML

@411 But are they the old style hippies who were anti-establishment or the new hippies who are pro-establishment (statists in other words.)
Remember way back when when the students took over the campuses and the dean's office? Can you imagine today's students doing that now that the former revolutionaries run things in academia and are now The Man.
Today's students are no longer anti-establishment because the establishment is perceived as non-conformist and so the students conform. The irony is so thick it can't be cut with a machete.

In math it's either right or wrong. There is no 'well intended' answer that will get a passing grade. In writing, you can play on the instructors emotions and if they're bad at their job they'll excuse lousy writing if they like what they thing the student is saying.
I had a film class around 1982 where an essay assignment was given. I wrote a lengthy parody of a Serious Critic article. The instructor loved it. I felt like Jack Nicholson in this scene:

Another problem is that Front Page is long dead. It was replaced with a whole new family of products under the Expression brand. And those were recently killed.
Another tool that hasn't been updated recently but can be very effective for a freebie is Live Writer. It's part of the Live suite of apps and knows how to talk directly to Wordpress. It has a look and feel much like Word but pared down just for blogging.

Limit your wants, make sure of your needs, hire as much as you can afford, and shop around. You can always post a list of desired features + time frame on wanted boards.
The key is knowing and making sure of what you absolutely have to have for the money you are willing to pay.

I taught one of my compliance auditors how to do web support -- and he continued it after we both worked elsewhere. It ain't rocket surgery. The underlying problem is that someone with no idea of what is to be done is describing something specific in a non-technical language and wants a professional to GET WHAT THEY WANT without having to learn how to specify it. Happens all the time.
And the solution can never be to hire better professionals. The solution is to couple the effort toward getting there to the effort of describing "there", so that the point is reached where "close enough, let's just stop". The alternatives, sadly, are to pay out the ass or be pissed-off at the result. It's just the way things work.

Those aren't really equivalents. The most used part of Wordpress is the server side functions. Frontpage was mainly a creation and management tool with a foucs on working with IIS. You could use it with Wordpress to have a data base driven site but it stopped being updated around the time Wordpress was getting big. Plenty of other more recent creation tools, like Microsoft's own Live Writer, know how to work directly with Wordpress.
Microsoft in general appears to have decided against being in the web development tools business except as it relates to things like SQL and IIS or as an output option for Office apps. Pretty much all of their end user tools for doing WYSIWYG web work are either officially dead or long overdue for updates.

If you're working with a modern management backend like Wordpress there is a good chance you'll run into problems. There are plenty of currently maintained apps out there that are inexpensive or even free that will be less of a problem and are aware of more up to date standards.

I was down at the local Barnes and Noble today, perusing the computer books. And I've got to say that the shit level is pegging the meter. There are tons of entire languages that seem to have no basis in reality and no reason to exist, and there is zippity-doo-dah available to manage real projects instead of masturbating to ridiculous certifications. When do you need Ruby? What is Python good for? Under what circumstances should you shun Perl? When should I use Hadoop over Cassandra, or vice-versa? Fuck if I know.
I've experienced enough programming in the dark ages (COBOL, ForTran, BASIC, Pascal, C, Assembler....) to know my way around a bit, but this is crap. In the real world, during my visit to the 3D printer place, a guy was saying, "well, the actual commands go to the printer in Python, so you get interpreter lags." Problem is, I understand what he said. He said, "someone used the wrong fucking tool because choosing the right tool was too difficult". We've got 15,000 tools to do stuff in software, and no freakin' idea of which is the right tool to use, and everyone is running around with their favorite screwdriver looking to pound a nail.

I think they've long since given up on stocking serious high level stuff int he book stores, unless they are tech specialists. Anybody at that level is likely to find a PDF online of the book and give that a look to see if the paper version is worth buying. For B(amp)M the real market is stuff for beginners, like introduction to whacking people on the head with an iPad.
What I've never found at any Barnes and Noble store is a book on creating EPUB files. The place that sells the #2 e-reader brand doesn't carry any books on how create content for their device. You can find those books at Amazon, though.

Part of the problem is that everyone would rather play than work, and modern IT culture has fostered that. I appreciate it, but it has led to a shit-ton of wasted time and energy and a lot of products that don't work properly *for the task* because the program is the goal, not the task.
It doesn't have to be drudgery, but IT peeps need to get rid of the disdain for business needs.
Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at February 19, 2013 02:30 AM (bxiXv)
It just frustrates the crap out of me. There are real goals that need to be accomplished -- just for one, you've got photos that you took on several cameras, photos that were sent to you in several media, photos that you've scanned at various resolutions -- distributed across a wide spectrum of media from DVD to SD to email attachments -- on two decades of machines where you update from one to another. How do you consolidate these, eliminate duplications, and ensure a secure backup? Would that by Python, Ruby, Rails, VBASIC, or Hadoop?
ForTran was optimized for Formula Translation in the engineering field; COBOL was optimized for business applications; Algol (and its derivatives: Pascal, BCPL, B, C, C++, and C sharp) was geared to implementing algorithms. WTF is Hadoop good for? Python?

The old style hippie would protest against "the man" for what they saw as injustices which could be anything from making pot legal to war. Part of what they believed was to "do your own thing" which I agree with as long as whatever that was it didn't hurt anyone else.
These new style hippies are lefty-socialists, they are not non-conformists. They are "the man". The government educational system, the EPA, the media and so-called democrats love them. They love big government, less freedom, and are anything but non-conformist. You must agree to and follow all their beliefs or be kicked off the plantation.

So much stuff that has seemed right around the corner for decades has never found those last few missing pieces needed to become a widely used product.
A lot of photo management apps have duplication detection. It may be a lot simpler to look at reviews of those than cobbling up your own code. Probably the first step is picking up a big drive, like one of those WD 3 TB externals going cheap at TigerDirect, and get everything copied on to that before any old machines or media fail. Then see how much space is left because you'll want a comparable volume for the organized version of it all.

I think that visioning it as one would the progress of transportation systems helps reduce the boggle. On foot, on log, on horse, on boat, on train, on plane, etc., then iterate. The speed, the compression of time by advancements, has led us all to forget that we are only beginning. Things will get sorted out, but progress is mostly messy and stumbling and mumbo-jumbo, until it's not.

A trip to Wikipedia with these sort of question is a lot more useful than any bookstore these days. The back cover of a book just isn't enough space to describe what the subject is and why you want to learn for these deeply convoluted tool sets.
It used to be a lot simpler to look at a task and work out which odd names and acronyms you needed to know and what else was just esoterica for others to use. But nowadays you can waste a lot of time reading up on stuff you'll never deal with directly in a zillion years because it feels like you're accomplishing something but isn't actual work.

One of my consulting clients (an insurance company) some years ago had an inhouse desktop app that was being constantly changed (like daily) due to new customers, regulations, etc and their daily build process for the app took over 4hr.
That 4hr build severely impacted their test group's ability to find issues fast enough for whatever developer was doing time in the barrel that night, and get the thing ready for push redeployment the next morning.
This long build time problem had apparently been going on for years and nobody could figure it out.
I was consulting on other SCM issues when this situation was casually mentioned on day, so I took a real quick look at their build process which was using a bunch of Unix shell scripts to drive it. There was some shit where the scripts being used to do math, jigger strings and whatnot in one spot and it was causing like 20+ processes to get forked off for each of those operations.
I replaced about 3 lines of script code with a tiny C program that did the same manipulations and their build time was slashed to 20min. Not dropped by 20min, dropped TO 20min from 4hr+.
My whole effort, from analysis to implementation only took about 1/2hr ;-> I was a freaking god that day.

In my youth I did so many idiot things that I came to a simple realization: mental health is like physical health -- it is not some bright line that one is on one side or the other -- rather, it is a entire range of conditions.
Physical health can range from the incredible fitness of Floyd Mayweather or some other champ in his prime to the sad state of someone minutes from death. Similarly, there is a huge range of mental health as well.
Sadly, it seems to me that very few appreciate that mental health has to be protected as one would protect their physical health, because it is precious, fleeting, and certainly subject to deterioration just by living on this planet.
Somehow in this country we have adopted the habits of mental health that are on a par with drinking raw sewage. It is truly frustrating and terrifying to watch. The consequences are not, and will not, be pretty.
