Great Moments in Failed Predictions
If I had even a Canadian nickel for every time someone has predicted the imminent running out of gas/oil/air/food/water and/or the end of mankind/flora/fauna/Earth, well let's just say there would a new drug-lord style home theater in the lighthouse and I could finally hire some professionals to deliver justice to my enemies.
Here are some classics to get warmed up:
- In 1865, Stanley Jevons (one of the most recognized 19th century economists) predicted that England would run out of coal by 1900, and that England's factories would grind to a standstill.
- In 1939 the US Department of the Interior said that American oil supplies would last only another 13 years.
- In 1949 the Secretary of the Interior announced that the end of US oil was in sight.
And some more recent insanely wrong predictions:
Claim: "[By] 1995, the greenhouse effect would be desolating the heartlands of North America and Eurasia with horrific drought, causing crop failures and food riots . [By 1996] The Platte River of Nebraska would be dry, while a continent-wide black blizzard of prairie topsoil will stop traffic on interstates, strip paint from houses and shut down computers." Michel Oppenheimer and Robert H. Boyle, Dead Heat, St. Martin's Press, 1990.
Claim Jan. 1970: "By 1985, air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half." Life Magazine, January 1970. Life Magazine also noted that some people disagree, "but scientists have solid experimental and historical evidence to support each of the predictions."
Data: Air quality has actually improved since 1970. Studies find that sunlight reaching the Earth fell by somewhere between 3 and 5 percent over the period in question.
And then you have the modern master of disastrously wrong disaster predictions: Dr. Paul Ehrlich.
Pretty much everything he ever wrote or said in the last 40+ years turns out to have been wrong. His failed predictions are simply too numerous to even begin to give a proper sampling of them but these should give you a taste:
"In the 1970s . hundreds of millions are going to starve to death," and by the 1980s most of the world's important resources would be depleted. He forecast that 65 million Americans would die of starvation between 1980-1989 and that by 1999, the US population would decline to 22.6 million. The problems in the US would be relatively minor compared to those in the rest of the world. (Ehrlich, Paul R. The Population Bomb).
Claim 1970: "In ten years all important animal life in the sea will be extinct. Large areas of coastline will have to be evacuated because of the stench of dead fish." Paul Ehrlich, speech during Earth Day, 1970.
And if you're wondering what his solution to all this was? Here's the short version: world government, Untermenschen reduction.
Now you might think by the 80s he'd have been chastened by his dismal track record but no - he was doubling-down and moving on to ever greater fame and publicity. Because acid rain/CFCs/global warmingchange!!
Oh and he's still alive and still a dick:
Remember these predictions were all made by scientists, experts and top. men. in their field. Sadly these men are still respected and taken seriously, there is no dictator-style theater in Casa Maetenloch, and my enemies can sleep peacefully in their beds. :-(
You can fly anywhere that's legal and the FAA allows...unless a policeman doesn't like it.
On July 26, 2012, Mr. Fleming [a 70 year old glider pilot] was out for a leisurely flight when, late in the afternoon, the tranquility of the day was suddenly broken by a radio call from local enforcement officials barking orders that he land his glider immediately. "The presumed offense," the magazine Flying reports in a story called "Pilot Arrested, Charged for Doing Nothing," "was his briefly flying over a nuclear power plant at approximately 1,000 feet AGL [i.e., above ground level] while looking for lift."According to Flying, "Local law enforcement cannot, for the record, order any pilot of an airplane in flight to do anything." What the magazine meant, alas, is that local law enforcement agencies may not so order a pilot. That they can do was demonstrated by the unhappy case of Mr. Fleming on that otherwise pleasant summer say.
Mr. Fleming landed. His plane was instantly surrounded by 17 police vehicles. He was "detained on the spot, brought to jail, held overnight on a charge of 'breach of peace,' and not released until he was bailed out late the next day."
....The sheriff's office claimed that Mr. Fleming had violated a "no fly" zone. The problem, as Flying points out, is "there is no such kind of zone, no such regulation and no such offense."
Milton Friedman: The Minimum Wage is the Most 'Anti-Negro Law in the Land'
As Andy has pointed out the proposed new minimum wage would say that everyone's hour of labor is worth at least $9. But clearly that's not the case and people generally don't like to overpay for things. So they don't and they won't.
Why Cyclists Enrage Car Drivers
Well the author gets the cause mostly right (or at least why *I* hate cyclists) but not the reasons behind it.
I've got a theory, of course. It's not because cyclists are annoying. It isn't even because we have a selective memory for that one stand-out annoying cyclist over the hundreds of boring, non-annoying ones (although that probably is a factor). No, my theory is that motorists hate cyclists because they offend the moral order.
Well my main beef is that cyclists don't follow car rules or pedestrian rules and quite often not even bicycle rules. They want to be treated like cars but then they'll suddenly become not-cars when it's convenient. So basically cyclists are slow, fragile unpredictable vehicles that always have the right of way. And that's guaranteed to bring teh rage in nearly anyone. Oh and then you have the sanctimony.
Conservative Counter-Culture Sites
Tired of relying on web sites that are run and owned by leftists that hate you? Well here's your chance to put your clicks where your comments are.
Yesterday, I directed your attention to Ritely, which aims to be the conservative answer to Reddit. Ritely is easy to use: posting articles takes seconds and it's got a clear format for finding other people's posted articles. Today, I get to tell you about Helen's Page, a conservative information clearinghouse that Glenn Reynold's wife started. It too has an easy interface and straightforward format.

Too bad.

There is a ski hill, now covered in snow..it was blowing a blizzard today. In the summer time, bike road racers have an annual event (or they did) where bike racers from all over the country come to compete in hill climbs (timed events).
Unfortunately, it was at the time a major truck route (160,000 GVW -- 42 wheelers) and those bike riders insisted on riding their bikes inches from, in the same lane, as those 42 wheelers. Had anything happened to the rider, the truck driver would probably have gone to prison. The driver would have been nothing more than a witness, and perhaps not even that, perhaps not even knowing he had hit the rider. An exploding tire would have sent the racer to the hospital with serious injuries.
I don't know if the bike event still happens; the truck route has been changed.
Ok, I'm much calmer now. (Don't bother with telling me about the rights of the bike racer.)

At lunch time they all go out - group of like 3 dozen or more - and clump together. They'll happily block turn lanes and intersections so they can all maintain their highly disciplined free-form random-sudden movement clump. God forbid you should want to go through that green light you've waited for. Or pass.
The only time I've dropped my motorcycle on the street was because of a clump of bicycles in the Santa Cruz mountains. It was them, the van or the hill.

Sixty eight years ago today the U.S. Navy and Marines invaded the Japanese island Iwo Jima. The 36 day battle would become the costliest battle in Marine Corps history. One in three of those landing would become a casualty. Nearly one-third of all Marines killed in WW 2 occurred on that crappy island. 22 Marines, 4 Navy Corpsman and the CO of LCI(G) 449 were awarded the Medal of Honor. To all Marines, past, present and future, SEMPER FIDELIS.

My squawk with cyclists is their tendency to get Bolshie (Britspeak) and ride well out into traffic, obviously to make a point, and then to get pissed off when cars pass closer to them than they would like.
I can relate to the Brazilian guy driving through them. I once encountered a whole clutch of them (ca. 30) on a two lane road, riding three or four abreast and thereby blocking my lane. Pissed me off no end.

Here's the thing with cyclists. We see them riding along the highway over mountain passes out here. Never once have I seen one look like he (she) was enjoying itself. I think they probably take up the activity 'cause they think it looks "cool" and before too long they have so much money invested in Spandex and cool shades and high-tech helmets and shirts with French logos and goofy dental office mirrors hanging off their helmets etc. etc. that they feel like they have to pretend that they like it.
Better in theory than in practice in other words. But they'll be damned if they will admit it.

Since it's June, don't take the route I took which would be either I-8, I-10, I-20, I-30, I-40, I-81 or I-10, I-15, I-40, I-81
Probably the most scenic route would be I-15, I-70, I-74, I-80
I had to sell my old car when I moved, no way it would have made it from SoCal to SW FL.
The Washington Compost had some article about how CA's economy is roaring back and they even took Moonbeam's word for it that Sacramento balanced the budget. What they've found out however is that they thought the big inflow in December was due to a surging economy, not people cashing out before the new taxes took effect. They now realize that all the money they were counting isn't going to show up

Heh! That'd work. Historically, caltrops were spiked devices scattered on roads or battlefields to cripple the enemy's horses. I believe the idea was revived on several occasions to make devices intended to jam the tracks of tanks. Think of bent nails welded together to make a tetrahedral figure with points on all four apices. No matter which way it falls, there's a point sticking up.

country so I'm looking forward to the trip. Shooting for a June

I drove across from PA to WA when I moved out here. My sister and all my worldly possessions stuffed into my little red, Ford Escort. It was a great trip. I would have liked to have stopped and seen the "Amazing Corn Palace" and the world's biggest frying pan, but sister didn't want to stop. We did go to Wall Drugs after seein a gazillion signs for it (a bitter disappointment), and we stopped at Mt. Rushmore (sadly, being October, the caverns in SD were closed). It took us about 5 days (we stopped every night). I got Tripteks from AAA, and that's how we planned our trip.
Enjoy your journey and travel safe!

Let's not forget that Canada Magazine, (I think), predicted that a billion...yes, with a 'b', people would be dead in 2012 from global warmening. They scare people with big numbers, and when their ludicrous predictions fall flat, they double down, and make the numbers even bigger...all the while ignoring the very real 1 million children per year that die from Malaria, for lack of DDT, and the 685 thousand children that die each year from lack of vitamin A. Each of these ongoing tragedies can be corrected....right now, today....cheaply, and easily.
The envirofrauds fight these solutions with everything they have, IMO, because in their twisted view of things, dead children is good for Gaia.

I forgot to mention the totally gay tight outfits that the bicyclers wear.
I have so many reasons why I hate bicyclers. We are plagued with an overabundance of idiots on wheels out here, but my biggest issue is at night time or early morning when it's dark.
When I run at night, I wear a reflective Zinglet (it looks like a safety patrol belt but straps over my torso and has blinking red lights on the front and back. I also carry either Knuckle Lights or wear a headlight. Sometimes, I'll have both the Knuckle Lights and a headlight on. I also have a reflective jacket, shorts and shirts that are made out of Illuminite that I wear on occasion. I make a point to make myself completely visible 360 degrees around.
I don't know how many times I've almost run over idiots on bikes who are wearing black clothing, and have absolutely no lights or anything reflective on them or their bikes. They of course, neglect to obey the rules of the road as they ride like idiot ninjas.

The Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD is a big waste of time (heh), but the Badlands, the Iron Hills and the Black Hills are really beautiful. And Custer State Park. The wildlife is incredible, and you can see it all from your car. Antelope, buffaloe, big horn sheep, the stupid wild donkeys that will eat pretzels out of your hand....

I let a buddy drive my boat once. The police were diving for a body in the lake. Diver flags everywhere and he (Not knowing what they meant he said later) was going to drive straight through the center of the dive area. I grabed the wheel and yelled expletives so we never entered the area but novices can make some really bad mistakes.

Also known as the "Gateway to the Grand Canyon®," Williams was the last town on Historic Route 66 to be bypassed by Interstate 40. The community, bypassed on Oct. 13, 1984, continues to thrive on tourism.
Founded in 1881, Williams was named for the famous trapper, scout and mountain man, "Old Bill Williams." A statue of "Old Bill" stands in Monument Park, located on the west side of the city. The large mountain directly south of town is named Bill Williams Mountain and the Town was incorporated July 9, 1901.

SR 52 runs along the (Ohio)river, SR 32 runs west from SR 23 to Cincinnati (I-275). 52 is a bit of a drag because it goes through every...little...town on the river.
32 is a real pretty drive in Autumn, when the leaves are changing, and in the Spring, because it is so green and lush.
Marshall is in Huntington, just over the Ohio River from.....Ohio? The son of one of my coworkers is going there now, and our company has a warehouse down there that we go to periodically.

Golly, I don't know anymore. Banff, the town, is pretty small, and restricted, in that you can't live there unless you work in the Park (the townsite being within the park, and controlled by Parks Canada). So it's going to have more than its fair share of civil service drones, tree-huggers, and enviro-nazis.
I avoid the National Parks as much as possible. Sure, the scenery is terrific, but about all you can actually do there now is look. If I go out camping, I want to take a gun along for some plinking, or maybe an ATV or dirt bike to ride. Can't do that in the parks.

The first time I drove through Glenwood Canyon, it was in 1982 and "I-70" was a two lane road that was all torn up (in the process of building the cantilevered freeway now). And in the early summer of 2011, we were driving eastbound through there and the Colorado was so high there were parts of the eastbound lower deck that were closed, so they had east and westbound lanes running on the top deck.

So yes, nuke plants are not prohibited areas, like Area 51, the White House, the Pentagon, etc... But they pretty much hint that you're looking for trouble if you fly too low or loiter around one (like this glider pilot apparently did).
I'm kind of ambivalent about this kind of thing. True, the FAA can be kind of assholes about some of their flight rules (believe me), but in this case, it seems to be pretty common knowledge in the flying community to just stay away from nuke plants. Same thing with prisons, incidentally, you can get in trouble from busting right over one, as a buddy of mine found out. I guess they don't want some drug lord escaping from the yard when his buddies land in a Jet Ranger to pick him up.
So, yeah, the cops were dicks. Yes, the FAA will probably be dicks too. But trying to play the guardhouse lawyer game when you're a pilot never works, you're expected to be a little smarter and a little more professional than the average citizen. Maybe he'll get to keep his license, with the publicity from the case and all.....

It's nowhere to found to link to (only other live versions that are weaker than the studio take). Anyway, here's "King Bee", from the same LP as R66(studio).

The more they keep pushing this pedestrian right of way shit the more Pedestrians that will die. I was brought up if you don't make eye contact never cross in front of a car/truck. These kids are being taught it's their right to walk into your path.

I just realized that I stayed overnight just a few miles west of there in Rifle.
I used to visit friends that lived in Rifle. Fantastic place....back then....great for fishing, hunting, hiking, fossils. These days it's being taken over by the slightly less afluent hollywood hippy types that can't afford to live any further east....but they're bound and determined to fuck it up for everyone but them.

That's always been the case in California, where once upon a time a pedestrian stepping off a curb into a crosswalk would stop traffic in both directions.
But now that scum from the Northeast (BIRM) have infested the place for decades, you're definitely taking your life in your hands crossing the street at any point, crosswalks notwithstanding.

I've never had this problem but it may be the water you fill the tank with is infested with more algae than any I used. Totally disinfect the tank and use City water and the anti chlorine drops. Or a UV light and a goldfish bowl for your fish when You have it on to kill the algae.
Oh and boil everything you ant to reuse from the tank that can take it during the disinfecting stage.

In our neighborhood we have a little old lady who is the widow of a local judge, and nothing has the right of way over her. Stop signs, red lights, none of those pertain to her. Her 1980's Buick Roadmaster station wagon sails right through stop signs, and I can probably bet her brake lights have never had to be replaced because they never get used. One day she will hit some kid, and nothing will be done.

You know...back when I still lived in the puke-hole known as California, the libs were all up in arms about gun ranges selling targets that looked like Osama Bin Laidtorest. They outlawed them. Now our very own DHS is purchasing paper targets of pregnant women and school girls.
I could probably make a mint marketing a line of paper targets depicting SWAT members, FBI agents, and various federal LE officers. I wonder how long it would take before I was tossed into prison for doing so.

Ha! This! I hate the hordes of biking masses that ride 6 abreast and give you a dirty look for having the temerity to be on the trail. How dare you. I also hate the stealth bikers that go whizzing by without so much as a "On your left" or a tinkle of the bell.
On one of my favorite trail runs, there were 4 of us who passed a jerk on a mountain bike who had been running us down earlier on the down hills. We made him eat our dust on the giant hills up. Gave me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside.

Joe Biden really loves shotguns

“If you want to protect yourself, get a double-barrel shotgun,” Biden said during the town hall, which was hosted by Parents magazine. “You don’t need an AR-15. It’s harder to aim, it’s harder to use and, in fact, you don’t need 30 rounds to protect yourself. Buy a shotgun. Buy a shotgun.”

How many bullets does a shotgun hold? Would more than one bullet be considered a high capacity magazine? What if that shotgun had a pistol grip or some kind of leather strap on it. Would it be considered an assault weapon? Inquiring minds want to know!

"According to Flying, 'Local law enforcement cannot, for the record, order any pilot of an airplane in flight to do anything.' What the magazine meant, alas, is that local law enforcement agencies may not so order a pilot. That they can do was demonstrated by the unhappy case of Mr. Fleming on that otherwise pleasant summer day."
In Prussia under Friedrich the Great, there was a special parallel court system whose only job was to hear cases by ordinary citizens who felt they had been abused by government officials.
Those courts apparently ruled against the officials quite frequently. Enforcing their court edicts and punishments with Prussian severity.
Just sayin'.

On a little different tangent. I'm glad female runners are looking healthier. When I was running cross country in high school and college, eating disorders were all to common. Sadly, there are still a lot of runners that have eating disorders. I am always amazed by that. So many girls I know who are really good runners are obsessed with their weight and have really unhealthy attitudes towards food. One woman I know brings a scale (yes, a bathroom scale!) to every out of town race she does. She puts it in her luggage and has flown with it and driven with it. It's really sad.

Oh my gosh! We are too! So this is the first time my hubby was able to qualify (which is weird because they took the 5 minutes and 59 seconds off, and it was harder to get in this year). I did it in 2002, but have been waiting to do it again til he could do it with me. (It sucks to be a man, you guys have to run an half hour faster!)
Did you do it last year? I had friends that did it, and it was crazy hot! (It's funny because before last year, 2004 was "the hot year"--heh!) My one friend ran a 2:40 and made the top 100 (I think he was 90 something) despite the heat, but it's too bad because he was really in shape to do 2:30. One of my friends said it was the most wheelchairs he ever saw at the finish line of a marathon.
What marathon did you BQ at?

Some friend of his wrote a defense saying that at the time he wrote it, he had no idea the victim would die. HELLO? Blood on the sidewalk, his buddy cracks a helmet, 71 year old man struck by a body going 30 mph in serious condition and he didn't know the man could die?

i think Tiny House is developing as many fans as Uncle Horse.
yes. Now you can come and stay in a place that has much less cat exposure. Mouffette is convinced she can make big eyes at me and change this. Crazy cat. she dives for the door any time i open it. But it is nice and warm in there. and when i finish the floor we will be able to clean it with a swiffer. between that and the air scrubber, you should be good to go on the allergen front. A friend of mine was horrified i had taken cats into account but not roses. I had to remind her its good for roses to cut all the flowers off, regularly, which i would gladly do.
any you all go to extreme lengths to protect friends from allergies when they visit?

Anyone who's ever lived in that area knows that it's a bitch to cross on foot, and when I finally got the signal to walk I stepped to cross the street and this bitch flying down the hill on Los Feliz screams at me "I'm on a bike, asshole!!" and just barely missed me.
I thought of that old ditty and hope it happened to her;
She was going around the corner doing 90 miles an hour,
When the chain on her motorcycle broke.
Now she's lying in the grass with a muffler up her ass,
And her tits are playing Dixie on the spokes

Unfortunately I'm cursed with knowing how to do hardwood floors, and I have the tools. I get asked to "help" a lot, which is usually me just doing the damn thing. The last "help" consisted of 1000 sq ft of flooring.

Having achieved good test numbers, I have been making up for some lost time on the brewskis....there's a place around the corner that has "multi-tap brewery takeover nights" where they'll "lease out" 10-12-15-20 taps to a microbrewery. Unfortunately, they had Stone last Wednesday and I couldn't make it.

The security cams are for the HOUSE, where the computers are, the GARAGE, where the tools are, and the DRIVEWAY, where the BH's car has been repeatedly vandalized. The camera wires run through the attic, which is where Xmas decorations live. We've had odd things happen (someone once stole a planted snapdragon).....but nobody's molesting the Xmas decor yet. Driving downtown on a nice Sunday morning, on a one way street going about 30. Guy on a bike flies through the red light without even bothering to look, going 20-25 from my left to right. I have no chance to stop or avoid him, and he only saw me when my brakes started screeching, about 10 feet or less from impact. He gets hit squarely on the drivers side and goes flying down the street. After two hours giving statements to police and talking to witnesses, I get a ride home with the tow truck, as my windshield was shattered - his head hit the windshield so hard it put a hole through it, and there were chunks of his scalp in the glass. I followed up after getting a copy of the police report, and found out he got a massive concussion, fifty or so stitches, broken eye socket, shattered right leg, his expensive road bike destroyed and a ticket.
Posted by: model_1066 at February 20, 2013 02:11 AM (7xPCu)
I didn't enjoy that at all. And I hope that he paid for your windshield.....because -- and this is A Truth that needs to be HEARD everywhere -- "Fuckups shouldn't prosper." A moment's inattention is one thing, taking reasonable risks (and hedging them) is one thing, being a blithe idiot and exposing others to risk is something decidedly different. It's why there are DUI laws -- you can drive semi-competently, you can drink......but the law presumes against you when you combine the two.

I'm not a critic of redemption, but it has to come from acknowledging one's prior faults. I hope, then, that -- while keeping it light could be appropriate -- he let it be known that he had performed a godawful stupid act that put both him and you at risk and was sorry for it. If he did that -- however subtly -- you were gracious and kind to not pursue him further. Furthermore, we can all wish him the very best going into the future.
It's very strange -- I was raised vaguely agnostic, went rabid atheist from about 8 to 16, did a "second thought" to a more relaxed agnosticism from about 16-24, discovered that spirituality and morality had more to do with human nature than books and priests from about 25-30, and have almost been slowly recreating Catholicism since.
Like the importance of repentance to redemption -- I had this cousin, Stevie (ironically, raised as a Catholic), who was a brat. He'd hit my sister when people weren't looking, and she'd cry, and his mom would go, "Say you're sorry, Stevie" -- and he'd utter the words.....just like he had a thousand times before. Because that was as far as it went. The sounds came out of his mouth and his sorry-meter stayed pegged at 0.
And you'd go through all the agnostic criticism of Catholics, that maybe redemption didn't go anywhere anyway -- or you'd go through the Protestant criticism, that "repentence -> redemption" was too legalistic....but you start getting to the point where you think, "it's like why bankruptcy law is both strict and merciful -- of course there have to be rules."

If they say that pain is a good teacher, I think he understands his error quite well. I was thinking about it recently, and it occurred to me that if I didn't hit the brakes as quickly as I did, or not at all, he might have come crashing through my driver's side window. He'd be hurt less, perhaps, and I'd be hurt way more.
Posted by: model_1066 at February 20, 2013 02:57 AM (7xPCu)
Pain IS a good teacher. And there are many theological treatises asking why God would allow pain. But the bigger question is why God would allow people to suffer pain and not learn. I hope for his sake that he does understand his error well -- and lives by its example, teaches others from his experience, and disseminates his costly lesson far and wide. May he have a long and happy life in which to do this.
Most people being far less than perfect, I'd be reasonably satisfied if he just did not repeat the stunt.
I'm very glad that you escaped more serious harm.

You might think that their experience in elementary-school lunchrooms where they swapped bologna sandwiches for peanut-butter sandwiches with their schoolmates would have clued 'em in.....except they were all having government-subsidized ersatz lasagna instead.
People have infinite and varied desires, and the ability to create wealth by serving one another is similarly infinite and variable. If I have a hankerin' for peanut-butter today but just can't see it tomorrow, the ability to swap is an inexhaustible miracle, whereas the government lasagna goes on-and-on, regardless.

I think of pain as more of a biological necessity, for obvious reasons. You seem to be referring more to spiritual pain, sorrow, sadness, grief and those things.
Posted by: model_1066 at February 20, 2013 03:18 AM (7xPCu)
I think there's a reason that one is built upon the other. Biological pain, as in flatworms, is a teacher and a guide to behavior for flatworms -- but in social animals, pain from lack of status (shame), grief, and empathic pain perform the same function in society's more complex interactions. But in the case of your dumbass cyclist, physical pain works well enough.

Received 34 minutes ago from gcfl.net:
Potato Family One night, the Potato family sat down to dinner - Mother Potato and her three daughters. Midway through the meal, the eldest daughter spoke up. "Mother Potato?" she said. "I have an announcement to make." "And what might that be?" asked Mother, seeing the obvious excitement in her eldest daughter's eyes. "Well," replied the daughter, with a proud but sheepish grin, "I'm getting married!" The other daughters squealed with surprise as Mother Potato exclaimed, "Married! That's wonderful! And who are you marrying, eldest daughter?" "I'm marrying a Russet!" "A Russet!" replied Mother Potato with pride. "Oh, a Russet is a fine tater, a fine tater indeed!" As the family shared in the eldest daughter's joy, the middle daughter spoke up. "Mother? I, too, have an announcement." "And what might that be?" encouraged Mother Potato. Not knowing quite how to begin, the middle daughter paused, then said with conviction, "I, too, am getting married!" "You, too!" Mother Potato said with joy. "That's wonderful! Twice the good news in one evening! And who are you marrying, middle daughter?" "I'm marrying an Idaho!" beamed the middle daughter. "An Idaho!" said Mother Potato with joy. "Oh, an Idaho is a fine tater, a fine tater indeed!" Once again, the room came alive with laughter and excited plan for the future, when the youngest Potato daughter interrupted. "Mother? Mother Potato? Um, I, too, have an announcement to make." "Yes?" said Mother Potato with great anticipation. "Well," began the youngest Potato daughter with the same sheepish grin as her eldest sister before her, "I hope this doesn't come as a shock to you, but I am getting married, as well!" "Really?" said Mother Potato with sincere excitement. "All of my lovely daughters married! What wonderful news! And who, pray tell, are you marrying, youngest daughter?" "I'm marrying Dan Rather!" "DAN RATHER?" Mother Potato scowled suddenly. "But he's just a common tater!"

The next patron to come in was a Libertarian with a hunched back. He shuffled over to a booth, painfully sat down, and asked the waitress for a cup of hot tea. He also glanced across the restaurant and asked, "Is that Jesus over there?" The waitress nodded, so the Libertarian asked her to give Jesus a cup of hot tea, "My treat."
The third patron to come into the restaurant was a Democrat on crutches. He hobbled over to a booth, sat down and hollered, "Hey there honey! How's about getting me a cold mug of Miller Light?" He too looked across the restaurant and asked, "Isn't that God's boy over there?" The waitress nodded, so the Democrat directed her to give Jesus a cold beer. "On my bill," he said loudly.
As Jesus got up to leave, he passed by the Republican, touched him and said, "For your kindness, you are healed." The Republican felt the strength come back into his legs, got up, and ran off to enjoy his new access to the world.
Jesus passed by the Libertarian, touched him and said, "For your kindness, you are healed." The Libertarian felt his back straightening up and he raised his hands, praised the Lord, and ran off to share his joy with his family.
Then, Jesus walked towards the Democrat with a smile. The Democrat jumped up and yelled, "Don't touch me .... I'm on disability!"

Been Lutheran all my life, but I'm having real problems with the sudden insistence every Lutheran I know has in pushing the notion that we must obey government when it just floated around in the background before. The most favorable way I can see it is that scared people are trying to believe that everything's going to be okay because surely God won't allow it to be otherwise.
And I'm left with my hangups on Catholic practices (not looking to knock, just given my feeling towards hypocrites like Pelosi and the Kennedys I can't really participate in those things I don't believe in).
And I'm losing a lot of trust in any organization's ability to prevent leftist infiltration.
But I wish you the best of fortune in your journey.

It's kind an anti-"Year Zero" thing. Collectivists are all fond of rebooting -- "Year Zero" -- because nobody as smart as they are have ever tried such a thing. So you get this "Year Zero" nonsense in everyone from Rousseau to Obama. But it's eminently sensible to take an opposing view -- if you can't explain why a gate was there in the first place, you cannot be trusted to remove it.
A lot of times, someone will observe something and create a rule of thumb -- and then forget the underlying rationale for the rule......and then it becomes chic to oppose it without understanding why it was there in the first place. And you get great truths as Tom Wolfe chronicles in "The Great Relearning": "In 1968, in San Francisco, I came across a curious footnote to the psychedelic movement. At the Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic there were doctors who were treating diseases no living doctor had ever encountered before, diseases that had disappeared so long ago they had never even picked up Latin names, diseases such as the mange, the grunge, the itch, the twitch, the thrush, the scroff, the rot. And how was it that they had now returned? It had to do with the fact that thousands of young men and women had migrated to San Francisco to live communally in what I think history will record as one of the most extraordinary religious experiments of all time."
Posted by: cthulhu at February 20, 2013 12:19 AM (kaalw)
"The hippies, as they became known, sought nothing less than to sweep aside all codes and restraints of the past and start out from zero. At one point Ken Kesey organized a pilgrimage to Stonehenge with the idea of returning to Anglo-Saxon civilization's point zero, which he figured was Stonehenge, and heading out all over again to do it better. Among the codes and restraints that people in the communes swept aside—quite purposely—were those that said you shouldn't use other people's
toothbrushes or sleep on other people's mattresses without changing
the sheets or, as was more likely, without using any sheets at all or that you
and five other people shouldn't drink from the same bottle of Shasta or take
tokes from the same cigarette. And now, in 1968, they were relearning . . .
the laws of hygiene . . . by getting the mange, the grunge, the itch, the twitch, the thrush, the scroff, the rot."
I read it many years ago, and I don't care what anyone says -- I'd be proud to shake Tom Wolfe's hands for putting that bit of truth out there.

When did PJ Media decide to go down the road of LGF? They scrubbed all the old comments from prior topics and now you have to register. The comments are what drove the place. Meh.

There was a whole lot of Cahrels Jhosnen hate going on around the interwebs, but his changes were so abrupt and so uncharacteristic that stroke/tumor/break seemed to meet Occam's criterion -- and any of the three would be reason for pity more than hate. I don't go to that radioactive wasteland any more, and I can well understand those who have distanced themselves....but I allow myself to care a smidge for the ponytailed bicyclist.

so I understand that there is a relationship between horsepower and MPG - as one goes up the other goes down.
Is there an actual mathematical relationship though, with values and equations? I'd like to know what is the maximum hp that I would have to settle for, for a given MPG, and vice-versa.

I don't know him -- and at this point, I really don't want to. But if this came from outside then I could feel really sorry for him. I'd like to think he didn't descend into damnation from his own volition......but it's way too ugly to get close enough to investigate properly.

Pfft. It's 4 in the morning. Demon's more interesting. And that's have to be one finicky bear based on the story.
I'm thinking something like the thing from Red Sands (horror movie that's floating around cable recently). Except that's a djinn. So a snow djinn. With multiple attacks per round.

That's just lazy. I'm not a scientist -- I'm an accountant -- and that's not insurmountable.
Your mpg is engine efficiency (effort/gallon) - road drag/mile (in effort) - air drag/mile (in effort). You already knew that. HP is defined as well, as is the energy released by burning a gallon of gas. Set yerself to bizzin' and buzzin' and calc what you're askin'.

Chuthlu
"And you'd go through all the agnostic criticism of Catholics, that maybe redemption didn't go anywhere anyway -- or you'd go through the Protestant criticism, that "repentence -> redemption" was too legalistic"
Not enough atonement and penance to enforce that repentance, fifty Hail Marys on your knees helps
Posted by: Jean at February 20, 2013 05:20 AM (xBps2)
Like I said, I'm coming to this from an almost entirely anti-Catholic position.....and discovering -- "surprise, surprise.....the Christian church with the oldest pedigree has the longest tradition of thinking deeply on these matters."
I don't necessarily think 50 is better than 49 or 51....but I'm pretty convinced that there's a reason that repentance, atonement, and penance are in there.

On that last picture, I wonder if that is the same area as where we camped out during the Boy Scout World Jamboree I attended in 1971. Every morning I woke up, I could see Fujiyama out my tent opening. In the morning, the top was visible, but by afternoon, it was clouded over.
That Jamboree was also hit by a typhoon and we had to be evacuated, but that's another bunch of stories.

The thing to really focus on is which way the current paradigm will fail.
If you think you'll get shitty fuel, you go one way; if you think the fuel will be good, but wildly expensive, you go another way. If you think you'll get little fuel at all, a different way entirely. Pick your poison.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at February 20, 2013 06:08 AM (bxiXv)
I recently met Arbalest and spent some time.
I would say the real problem is that norcal is weirdly difficult to get around. When I lived near LA, people would get together in Woodland Hills or Pasadena and not think it was unusual -- but if you look at equivalent norcal distances, they a huge pain-in-the-ass to get to through odd geographic chokepoints.
